(00:00):
Okay, So I feel like oneof the two things are gonna happen.
One, there are gonna be thoseare gonna question my masculinity when talking about
this, and two, there aregonna be a lot of people that are
gonna be like, what are youtalking about? You don't know what you're
talking about, you don't know anything, and blah blah blah blah blah.
But I'm still hoping that there's gonnabe people that are gonna be open mind
when I talk about this. Solet's get right into it. Well,
(00:23):
first of all, what's going on, guys. It's Nat the effic Great
from the Game Changer podcast, andI'm gonna be talking about two different movies,
that being Mama Mia and Mama Mia. Here we go again. Before
I get into that, a littlebit of an explanation. There's been a
little bit of a lack of episodesthat featured myself and Toy. We've just
(00:45):
been having a little bit of tryingto figure out the scheduling. I know,
she just started a new job,so her scheduling is still a little
bit in the whack. Also,I believe this was where we had a
little bit of a holiday that wasgoing on if I'm not mistaken, I
think it was Memorial Day, ifI'm mistaken, And there was just a
(01:06):
lot of things that kind of reallymade things a bit more difficult for us
to really work this out. Sowe are going to get back to doing
the podcast together, hopefully very soon. The other thing is that we are
going to be skipping quite a bitof the movies from the wartime era and
just getting right into the originals.I myself might just do a series by
(01:33):
myself talking about the wartime movies, because I still think that there's quite a
bit to talk about when it comesto those movies. But I was asked
by my co host to skip intothose ones that we actually do remember,
ones that are going to be moreinteresting. So I definitely obliged and I
said, Okay, we'll do that. So that's going to be really where
(01:53):
that's going that. So the nextepisode that we're going to be talking about
is going to be Cinderella, andoh, I got quite a bit to
talk about that, and I recentlyrewatched the live action deal in which I
have quite a bit to say aboutthat, and I will give you guys
a little bit of a spoilers. The fact that it features a cast member
(02:14):
from Came of Thrones that already hasearned some cred with me is amazing.
So we're getting talking about that atdifferent time. But let's talk about MoMA
and MoMA Mia. Here we goagain, Abbah. What can I say
about them? Well, not much. I never really grew up with their
kind of music. I was definitelyinto more of the kind of the rock
(02:40):
and roll kind of deal. SoAbba wasn't one that Abba was kind of
one that just kind of showed up. It just kind of happened upon,
you know, the radio. SoI really don't have too much I can
say about Abba. I remember beinghorrible. I don't remember it being bad.
(03:00):
It was just kind of thing. Was like, oh, Abbah,
Okay. So finding out that intwo thousand and eight they decided to make
a movie with a lot of Abumusic, I'm like, Okay, this
might be interesting. And I'll tellyou guys this. During high school,
there were a couple of couples inmy class that would watch this movie,
(03:21):
and I'd never really got the chanceto sit down and watch. I just
remember a couple of scenes from themovie. That's about it. And now
I've had the chance to rewatch itafter she's I don't even remember how long
it was and who boy? Thismovie? Well, let's talk about the
plot first. So basically this movieis a story that talks about a girl
(03:49):
named Sophie who just wants to figureout who her father is. And she
sent three different letters to three differentmen who are basically being invited to her
wedding. And how does she knowthat these three guys are possibly her father.
(04:12):
Well, she goes into a diarytalking from her mom, basically talking
about how she had relations with thesemen. Boy, then the men arrive,
she meets up with them, theyhave a little bit in chemistry,
and also Donna played by Meryl Streep. Actually i'll talk more about the character
(04:38):
there. The mother, she basicallywants them to leave the island. They're
about to leave, but Sophie wantsto stay and be a parbately wedding.
But in the end it's all fornothing because she ends up being walked down
the aisle with her mom. Andalso there two friends of the mom who
(05:01):
they were all kind of like theywere all singers together. And there's also
like romances that come out of nowhere, and then there's all these random songs
that kind of they Okay, Ishould I shouldn't get ahead of myself.
(05:23):
In the end, Sophie decides notto get married, but the mom and
one of the dads decide to getmarried instead, and that's kind of how
the movie ends. Okay, Sothere's a lot to unpack with this boy,
So let me speak more on thepositive. The things I kind of
(05:45):
like about this movie. There area couple of songs in here that I
do enjoy. A song of LayAll Your Love on Me I think is
a really nice song that does kindof show the relationship and how it kind
(06:06):
of built between the Beyonce Sky andthe girl Sophie. There's you know,
some of the classics like Mamma Mia, which is pretty good dance and Queen
I think is a fun number tohave. Gosh, I'm trying to think
(06:28):
of like their other ones here.I like the sos on the soundtrack.
When it comes to the actual movieitself. Another thing I like about this
Rosie Rosie, one of the friendsof Donna, is really funny. Also
(06:51):
came to find out that she playedRon Weasley's mom and Harry Potter, so
I'm like, Okay, this actresshas already gotten in stack credit by me
at this point. Ah jeez.We have the doctor's choices for for the
cast. Meryl Streep playing Donna, she has her moments. I mean,
(07:15):
I think it's really easy for meto say. Pierce Brosman, Colin Firth,
and h ste Lenne Scars Guard playthe three dads. I always love
watching Pierce Brosman act. He's Ithink, honestly the funniest straight man in
all of comedy. Colin Firth,he's a pretty good guy. And then
(07:38):
we have a Stale scars Guard.I did not realize that we had another
Scars Guard in the universe of movies, and I think that's pretty awesome.
Okay, so Julie Walters is Rosie. We have Tanya played by Christine Brensky,
(08:01):
who I knew as the woman fromthe Gride, and kind of interesting
Amanda seaf Reid. Okay, soI've already talked about the great things about
this. Let's talk about the badAmanda Seafreed's character of Sophie. She is
so I don't even understand what ishappening here. It's weird that she's basically
(08:26):
getting excited about finding out Oh,this guy had in love with my mom.
And this guy made love to mymom. This guy had sex with
my mom. It's just so weirdto hear that. And then she does
this and it's like what. Andthen she's basically trying to hide the dads
and it's I mean, I guessthat's kind of comedic. But then when
(08:52):
she sees them leaving, she triesto bring them back. She tried talking
to them, and then it's justkind of a deal where during the movie
it seems like we almost get theanswer of who the dad was. I
believe Harry was the first one toassume, like, oh, yeah,
I'm the dad. Then it wentinto Sam, who said that he's the
(09:15):
dad. Then it went to Bill. He assumes that he's the dad,
and it's like, oh, well, which one of us is going to
walk you down the aisle? Andthen it just didn't matter. It just
turned out to be the mom walkingto them down the aisle. And then,
like I said, this whole thingis built up to finding out who
the dad was, but also gettingmarried, and in the end they're just
like, oh no, we're notgonna get married. Now, we're gonna
just explore the world. And that'sanother thing that's really weird is that Donna,
(09:39):
played by Meryl Streep, is themom, and she basically wants Sophie
to stick around and be a partof this hotel deal that she's doing where
she's like re renovating it and tryingto make it big. But Sophie wants
to go out, but she alsodoes want let her mom down, and
(10:00):
in the end she decides, youknow what, we're not gonna get married.
Sky and I were just gonna borethe world, which comes into play
not really in the sequel, whichI'll talk about in a bit. She's
Louise. The story is like allover the place, and the songs just
come out of nowhere as well. And I will say this, you guys,
(10:22):
I speak very fondly of Peers Brosman'sacting, his singing. Oh my
gosh, this was tough to getthrough, and Meryl Streep's character of Donna
is oh my gosh. I MerylStreep, I know you've done better.
I really know you've done better.I've seen you in Series of Unfortunate Events
(10:45):
and Mary Poppins Returns, and thoseroles were better than this. This was
one of those roles around like shedoes not look good in this when she
looks like a crazy whay could do. She's obsessive, she's just completely not
right. There's a song where itgoes like winter it takes all where it
almost seems like, oh, it'sbasically who's going to take my daughter?
(11:09):
And it's like, no, thisis not. This song comes out of
nowhere. It makes no sense whatsoever. It's so frustrating. I mean,
good lord, I mean I'm lookingat some of these other actors that are
on here, and I really wishedthat I could say, hey, they're
(11:31):
pretty good, and they play somekind of you know, roll into this,
but they don't. They really don't. They're just kind of there.
It just made no sense. Thismovie was annoying, confusing, and just
absolutely made me think to myself, there are better musicals out there that tell
(11:56):
a better story. This was oneof those movies. I just remember after
being known with that saying, well, it's definitely not my favorite musical.
I mean it's not the worst, but it's definitely one that I look at
and think, wow, is thissomehow was just this was somehow a thing.
(12:22):
So it was the fifth grossing, fifth highest grossing film of two thousand
and eight. Mixed reviews from critics, who praise the musical numbers and production
values, but criticize the casting ofinexperienced singers and can't be tone. That
can't be tone, I think iswhat really kills it. There's so many
moments where it just feels, Honestly, I don't even know if I do
(12:46):
this even any justice. If youwant one where it kind of does do
the movie justice. Look at thenostalgia critic real thoughts on Mama Mia.
The first few seconds, it's literallyDoug and his brother kind of looking at
the camera. Doug is seeing MamaMia and here we and dancing Queen Rob
(13:09):
just has this look of just disgustand annoyance and an annoyance to the point
where he just looks at his brotherDoug singing and just screams, shut the
fuck up. It's kind of oneof those things where're like, wow,
that's funny, but it kind ofdoes encapsulate what Mama Mia is. It's
just so bad. I really didnot like this movie, which is definitely
(13:35):
not something I could say about thesequel, Mama Mia. Here we Go
Again. I actually did watch inthe theaters, and it just got to
be so forgettable because I think Iwas so blinded by the rage of Mama
Mia that I just thought it's it'sbad. Whatever it is bad. But
after watching it with my friends,I actually came to appreciate this movie a
(13:58):
lot more. And it's definitely onethat I was not expecting to be as
good as what it was. Soagain we're going into the story of itself.
It took place in twenty eighteen, and the story is that Sophie,
(14:22):
who now runs the hotel deal,is setting up the resource. She's getting
everything ready, making sure everything isperfect, and she's trying to make sure
that everything is good in honor ofher mother, which I thought to myself,
wait, why did they kill offDonna? But I will tell you
(14:43):
this. They do answer the reasonwhy by the end of the movie,
and I will say this, it'snot fair. So Sophie is working with
a couple of the people around. She gets to have her mom's friends come
(15:03):
by and they're helping her out.The Dad's eventually come down and help out
Sophie as well. There comes apoint where Sky her the yance slash husband.
I don't think they really answer this. I'm gonna look this up while
I'm explaining that it's just really weird. Oh okay, they did get married.
(15:28):
That that explains a little bit moreso. I guess there was a
situation was like, oh, wedon't have to get married now, we'll
just get married off camera. Sure, why not. But while they're going
through this whole entire deal setting upthe resort getting everything ready, they do
lashbacks for DNA and they're kind ofshowing how she came to find this island,
(15:56):
this resort, how she met Bill, Sam and Harry, And it's
kind of one of those like weirdmovies where it's kind of a sequel,
but it's also a bit of aprequel as well, and it ends with
them baptizing Sophie's kid and having thisbig dance number of Super Trooper. There's
(16:26):
a lot more to really say aboutthis, but we will kind of go
more detailed about that for this one. I'm actual gonna start with some of
the things that I didn't like. This is a bit harder for me because
I, well, I remember watchingthis movie. I don't know if there
was anything glaring to where I thoughtI really hated this movie. I didn't
(16:49):
understand why they killed off Donna, but they do kind of like a cheap
factor as to why they did it. At the end of the movie,
where Donna's spirit is basically there withSophie and Sophie's kid is he's getting baptized,
(17:10):
and it's a really emotional emotional songwith my love my Life, And
it's one of those things where MerylStreep's lack of presence in the movie kind
(17:33):
of made this movie better. AndI'm again, I'm not trying to say
that Meryl Streep is a horrible actress. She does a great job with a
lot of her movies, but Ijust feel like her presence lacking in this
movie definitely helped. Yeah, Ithink other than that, I really loved
this sequel. It was kind ofone of those things where it hold a
(17:56):
one to eighty. The songs weredefinitely a lot more memorable. Of course,
you know you have Dancing Queen, you have I'll even go through a
lot of the songs on here thatI kind of really enjoy here. The
one of Us song between Sky andSophie is a really good song between the
(18:21):
two of them because Sky is inNew York basically learning how to do things
to help build the hotel business. But he's also in New York and he's
been offered a good, high payingjob, so he's basically born between staying
(18:41):
in New York or going back tothe Island to support Sophie. So this
one of Us song is honestly areally good song that shows like the torment
that the two have, where basically, you know, saying like one of
us is feeling horrible and the otherside is saying that they're feeling horrible as
(19:02):
well. It's kind of one ofthose things where they're kind of keeping a
strong feeling they're trying to keep likea strong stance for each other, basically
to make the other person feel bad, which is something kind of true art
form. All of the songs herethat introduce us to the younger versions of
(19:26):
Harry and Bill is Waterloo and WhyDid It Have to Be Me? There's
I don't think there's really that muchof a song between Sam and Donna in
(19:48):
this one other than I think KnowingMe Knowing You, where Donna finds out
that Sam was engaged, which isone of the reasons why Sam and Donna
didn't end up together. In thefirst place, but they ended up together
in the end of the first movie. Why not. But they introduced these
(20:11):
younger characters into this one. Youhave a lot of the cast from the
original Mama Mea. They make thecomeback, but introducing some of the new
cast members. Jessica Keenan Wynn asa young Tanya. You have Jeremy Irvine
playing a young Sam yea Hugh Skinnerplaying a young Harry. You have Lily
(20:37):
James playing a young Donna and LilyJames. My god, I I think
I have fallen in love with thismovie with this moment so much. Josh
Dylon playing a young Bill, andAlexa Davies as a young Rosie. A
lot of these young characters, theymatch the older characters almost beat by beat.
(21:02):
It almost looks like kind of thosethings where you look at them and
you think, wow, this iskind of the progression from you know,
this is their young deal to thembeing they're current older deal. It actually
worked out very nicely. This alsofeatures some other pretty good actors in here.
(21:23):
I have Andy Garcia. Well,I literally looked at that. I
thought to myself, oh shit, that's that's a pretty interesting give. Also,
Share is involved in this, whichis another one of those things where
I thought, oh, this wouldbe kind of interesting, but no,
Share was a lot of fun.So another song that they hadn't here,
(21:44):
they did Mama and Me Again. That was fun. Like I said,
fancy queen. There, Andy Garciaand Share do a rendition of Fernando,
which is basically Share singing and AndyGarcia just sings along with Share a couple
of times. So it was kindof those weird things where I'm like,
(22:07):
it's a duet, but it's mainlyShare. It's like eighty percent Share,
twenty percent Share and Andy Garcia. So then you have the duet with Donna
and Sophie singing in My Love MyLife, and then the ending sequence super
(22:30):
Trooper, which feels like a giantcasting call during a Broadway production. It
is so beautiful, it's so welldone. And I just watched this and
I think to myself, Man,I want to see this on a Broadway
stage. I want to see thissomehow, maybe not fully being replicated,
(22:53):
but definitely seeing how somebody can justtranslate this entire deal into a stage adaptation.
And I think that's really the mainthing I love about this is that
this does feel like it would bea great stage adaptation or something that went
from the stage who went movie,But it was done perfectly. So yeah,
(23:18):
no, I really loved Mum andMe Here we go again. It
was one of those movies that justreally opened my eyes, like, Wow,
this is better. The characters arebetter written, the songs are definitely
more in tune with the tones thatthey put into this. I really Yeah,
(23:45):
Like I said, I like thecharacters a lot better. Again,
the lack of presence for Donna MerylStreep, Yes, it's a mean thing
for me to say, but atthe same time, just it added that
much more emotion to the end ofthe show. And still, I mean
(24:07):
I got nostalgic when I saw herand the original super Troopers doing their trio
deal. I thought it was stillvery good. I still enjoyed it.
But yeah, no, this wasa very well done movie. And I'd
really love to see this become astage adaptation if it hasn't already. Yeah
(24:34):
no, that's kind of all Igot for this. I thought I was
going to be taking a lot moretime kind of riffing and ranting about this,
but it's kind of one of thosemovies where you feel like it's this
is a weird comparison, but Ithink it's kind of the best way to
put it. It's kind of likegoing from the original Mad Max to Mad
(24:55):
Max Fury Road, where the originalis kind of just eh, but then
when you get to the sequel, everybody remembers that. Everybody remembers the characters.
Honestly, I don't think that thereare a lot of people that are
quoting Mama Mia here we Go Again. They're probably not even quoting Mama Mia,
but they are remembering a lot ofthese songs a lot more, and
(25:18):
they flowed so well, and theyhit a different tone. It's just it's
fun. It's just a fun movieto watch. Yeah, I think,
uh, I think that's it.I think that's all I got. So,
like I said, a bit ofa shorter episode, but we will
(25:40):
be getting back to our longer, probably more hour long episodes starting this upcoming
week. You know, I honestly, guys, I would say just watch
Mama Mia, Here we Go Againand miss out on the original Mama Mia.
(26:00):
You're not going to be It's notone of those things where you'll look
at it and be like, oh, maybe I should watch you read No
no, no, I feel likeHere We Go Again is kind of its
own standalone film, and Mama Meais just kind of a movie in its
own deal, just kind of there. It's the Star Wars prequels of movies
basically, if that makes sense, and it does anyway, So thank you
(26:25):
guys for listening in on the show, and sorry if I've been kind of
riffing and raffing, But like Isaid, I see shit, but I
also know when movies are damn good. So that's gonna wrap it up for
me. Feel free to check outthe Game Changer podcasts other episodes that we
posted up on the Spreaker Network, and be sure to check out the merch
(26:52):

Twitter. You could also check outTory at Tory Clark boss Mode. Otherwise
(27:14):

there as well. Yeah, Iuh, I think that's it. I
feel really weird, just kind oflike sitting here and just think to myself,
Wow, do I really not haveanything more to say about these movies?
But yeah, no, I've I'vehit everything. It was a like,
(27:36):
let us know what you guys thinkabout these movies, and yeah,
talk to you, talk to yousoon, toodles. As soon as I
figure out how to stop this thing, I think it's
