Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coach. A lot of people don't understand there's a lot
that goes into having a bounce back week and then
traveling across the country. How do you feel your team
handled all the adversity is that this week?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Yeah, I couldn't be more proud of the way they responded,
first of all, from a tough, physical game last week,
disappointing game last week where where you know, we certainly
didn't get the outcome we were hoping for. And we
had talked at langth on Monday and Tuesday about not
letting the team beat you twice and being able to
flush that out of your system and come back and

(00:31):
get back on track this week and play our kind
of football. And you're right, it was you had to
come up here. We didn't have to, but we decided
to come out here on Thursday due to the you know,
the four hour flight and two hours lost on the
clock with the time zone change and with an earlier
kickoff at three thirty. Hadn't been a night game, he
probably would just come out yesterday. But anyway, all the
things that went into this and the way that our

(00:51):
guys responded in the game tonight or this afternoon, I
was very proud of.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Them, Kyle Built Scott Upstairs, congratulations on the wind. There's
a lot of stats that you're gonna like about game.
For sure, you didn't have to punt today, which is
a good thing if you were eight for nine in
the red zone today with some cutchdowns and field goals.
So give me your overview on how you felt like
your offense performed today against West Virginia.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
I thought they got back in high gear today and
more of what we think we can be. Devin was sharp,
offensive line was outstanding, and really, when we're running the
ball efficiently, everything else opens up. And that's exactly what
happened tonight. We went through for what two ninety and
rush for two thirty or forty, so very balanced attack.
But it all starts with the run game, befo. We're

(01:32):
running the ball efficiently and physically, like I said, everything
else becomes a lot easier. Defense that played well. In addition,
you know, I thought we did some really good things,
but we still a little sloppy in the tackling. We've
got to be better tacklers and we'll work hard this
bye week on that and make sure we try to
get back to how we tackle at Utah. That's one

(01:54):
of our strengths typically, and it has not been as
sharp as it needs to be at this year. Special
teams you mentioned, Yeah, No, we didn't punt one time.
I think they punted just a couple of times kickoffs.
No kickoff returns for either team, so very little going
on special teams wise. It was really good to see
Dylon Curtis make those field goals and I think that'll

(02:17):
give him some confidence and we're going to need to
rely on him down the road and I'm sure he's
going to be called upon to make a big kick
or two for us at least during the rest of
this season. And what he showed tonight was much better
poise and focus on his kicks.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Yeah, he really seemed very consistent and kind of settled,
you know, in how he was kicking the ball and
kind of all the phases. There a familiar face in
rich Rod, but a very new place in West Virginia.
Just kind of some of your thoughts about being here
and kind of what it was like and how you
felt about it.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, first of all, was my first trip out here.
I never set foot in the state period, let alone,
let alone this stadium. And it's quite an environment and
got a nice stadium here, holds about sixty thousand. They're
gonna put you know, one hundred million or something into
it this offseason. He was telling me they're gonna build
some luxury boxes. But anyway, it's a place that loves
their football. Rich did such a fantastic job last time

(03:12):
around when he was here back in the early two thousands.
I really had it going and I got no doubt
that he'll get it going again. I mean, he's a
heck of a football coach and particularly an offensive mind,
and he's competitive, he'll recruit the right way and he'll
get things done here. You just got to give them
a little bit of time.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Ryan Davis had another huge day for He was your
first one hundred yard receiver of the year today, seven
more catches one hundred and seven yards. He's got thirty
six on the year, had four catches of ten plus
yards today, include that big touchdown once he meant to
your offense and adding him is that transfer from New Mexico.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Oh, he's been big. And Devin and him obviously have
a great rapport with each other, and that stems from,
you know, playing with each other last season together at
New Mexico. And Ryan is a guy that Devin really trusts.
He's a craw after receiver. That's the best word I
can use for him. He just has a knack for
getting open and finding the soft spots in the defense.

(04:07):
He's got great hands, he's fearless, and he's you know,
he's just so smart and cagey. That's that's really what
his strengths are. And and he and Devin, you know,
like I said, really have a good connection.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
You go into the first buy this next week one
of two, do you do you handle them both the same?
Or what's kind of maybe your your thought process going
into this spy.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Now, well, we can certainly use it. We got three
or four more guys banged up tonight or this afternoon,
and so we can use it for health purposes if
nothing else. And the guys really have been playing football
now when you count fall camp and the season, you
know it's been about twelve weeks, you know, eleven twelve
weeks straight, and so this will be a good chance

(04:50):
to regroup and get some guys healed up and freshened
up and give us an extra time to prepare for
the next opponent.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
So Kyle ed he season ending injuries today that you
could comment.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
On too soon to tell, okay, but.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
I will have we'll have some clarity on that on Monday,
and we'll make make sure we pass along, you know,
if there is any of those, and hopefully not, but
if there is, we'll pass them along to you on Monday.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Daniel Bray got to play a little bit, showed a
little bit of a spark. You know, when you see that,
you kind of you say, hey, that might be something
we add into our offense or is it just kind
of hey, he gets on the field because of the
garbage minutes. Do you see I guess down the road
him being a part of your offense this season?

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, Yeah, the answer is a resounding yes. And he's
he's you know, he's just a true freshman, still learning
how things happen at the collegiate level and things, you know,
how you operate and practice and how you study film.
And he's come a long way. Walk out to why
I running back coach is done a really nice job
with him and now, in my opinion, it's time for
him to start contributing more. And he saw the flashes

(05:55):
tonight of what he's what his capabilities are. He's a
ten three hundred meter guy. At least that's he told me.
He was, Well, take that out at face value, and
that's probably as fast as anyone we have on the team.
And you saw his acceleration, his ability to make people miss,
and so yeah, that was very encouraging and hopefully this
will be a springboard for him to become more involved.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Kyle, you're a month into the season, you played five games,
You're four and one, You've got one and one of
the big twelve. You've got a bye week now, with
some tough games coming in October. Do you feel like
you're back on track after a tough one last week?

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Well, certainly, we certainly played a lot better this week.
And yeah, you know, we realized that TCHU in West
Virginia are different football teams and different stages of their
development as programs. But it's like we already talked about
you coming out here after a tough game last week,
after you know, with the road trip and the travel
and all the things you got to deal with. I
thought our guys handled it exceptionally well. But we got

(06:47):
some tough ones coming up. I mean, you know, by
no means we figured everything out. But this is a
very good win to get us back on track, so
to speak.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Kyle, thanks, travel safe home, going to nap in on
the play. We'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Okay, guys, thank you.
