long as well. So yeah, we've got a big one,
uh number seventeen, Texas Tech coming to town for the
first time.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
They're all big billy, I've every game is big.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
It's like I say after games, it's always a great
night to be a youth, but some nights are better
than others. Always a big game, but some are a
little bit bigger than others. And this is a big
one this week because it's a Big twelve voteener conference game.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Absolutely, and you're right, it's the opening game for the
for the conference. And uh, I got a very good
football team coming in here. I'm telling you right now,
I've been watching tape in the last forty eight hours
and they do some really good things.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Gonna get to the Red Raiders coming up here in
just a bit. Just another reminder, big noon kickoff show.
He is gonna be here. Our friend Urban Meyer and
Rob Stone and Matt Lioner and boy who else, mark
Ingram and Brady Quinn will all be here. You could
come out and see them eight am Saturday morning. Biggest
game of the Big twelve era maybe, so we'll see
winner has a leg up too in the race to
Dallas later this year. Coming up on the show tonight,
(01:49):
Devin Dan Pierre and John Henry Daily boy, maybe the
best offensive and best defensive player through three games for
Utah coming in here tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Yeah, there's an argument for that. Devin has been outstanding
and as has John Henry and really, you know, please
with what they've done in the first three bowl games.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
So we'll talk to those guys coming up on the show.
We'll talk about Texas Tech and and all that good stuff.
But before we do any of that, just quick recap
on the Wyoming game, Kyle, thirty one to seven win,
You go three and oh on the ear service, I'm sorry,
thirty one to six. Well, you're right, what's the final
score there? No pad, they went for two and didn't
get it. You go and you know, kind of a
(02:25):
tail of two halves first half, you guys, Yeah, up
and down. I was just very curious to hear what
you tell sly coming off the field, and yeah, you
were pretty straightforward, but you had two hundred sixty five
yards went on straightforward.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I'm always straightforward.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
You're always straightforward. And you kept it very family friendly
is what you did coming over to the field. But
but you moved it up and down the field. You
have the red zone turnover which kills you in the
three miss field goals. You're up three to nothing. It
felt like it should have been about seventeen or twenty
to nothing in that game. So what was your message
of halftime to the guys.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Well, simple, finish. The operative word there was finish. As
you mentioned, we were up and down the field. We
had around two seventy total low and you know it
was about the same almost exactly amount in the second
half and a much different result on the scoreboard. And
like I said, we found ways just to not finish drives,
whether it be miss a field goal or or fumble
the ball or we had to punt one time and
(03:16):
so we moved the ball, but we seemed to find
a way to fizzle out at the end there, and
that can't happen. I mean, if you want to win
and be a championship team, then you got to you
gotta finish drives and put the ball on the intone.
And that's exactly what happened in the second half.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
It felt like that first drive of the second half,
especially it has they've used statement drive, but it really
felt like whatever the message was, it was executed coming out.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Of lot it was and it set the tone for
the for the rest of the half. And fortunately the
defense was stout from start to finish. You know, had
we been soft on defense and given up a couple
of touchdowns early in the game, or you know, in
the first half, it would have been a lot more stress.
And but the defense was lights out and just kept
turning the wyoming away and got after the quarterback, got
(03:59):
a few takeaways and that was you know, that's what
kept us in the game until the offense could get untracked.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
You don't know what impress me the most in the
second half of those scoring drives, and I think we
talked about this on the postgame show. You had a
couple of self inflicted wounds on a couple of those drives.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
A couple yeah, yeah, you get to make a.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Big play go back. I think on the one drive
there were three penalties in Devin and the offense just
kind of kept their head down, stayed focused, and overcame
all of them, including that really big play to Dallon
Bentley on the sidewinch where he picked up about you
needed twenty five, he got like twenty on and then
the last five he just kind of earned on his own.
But I thought that was really impressive because over the
years and teams do this, you know, penalty sets you back. Okay, well,
(04:39):
we'll have to settle for a field goal or put
it away. They didn't do that exactly.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
They kept at it, and like I said, it was,
you know, three steps forward and three steps back for
about three or four plays in a row. And I
was at the nineteen play drive. There was a nineteen
play drive in there. I'm not sure if that was
the one or not, but that was a long drive.
And you're right, we just kept being resilient, handling the
university and chipping away at it. And Dallon Bentley, I
(05:04):
can tell you right now he's playing outstanding football. I
can't say enough good things about what he's done so
far this season. And Hunter Andrews for that matter, the
two tight ends are really contributing.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
We're going to get to Hunter Andrews at a minute.
There's some players who have caught my eye in the
first three games. One of them, we'll talk about him
to Dallon's point. In this day and age of college football,
and you know it, guys, if they aren't things aren't
going their way, or they're not catching enough balls or
not being targeted, sometimes they just leave the program go
someplace else. Dallan for the last couple of years has
(05:34):
sat behind some guys and hasn't necessarily been a focal point,
but he's stuck with it and he's been there and
now it's paying off this year in his senior year.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
It is.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
And the reason why he hadn't really made a move
until now is being able to stay on the field
has been difficult for him. He was injury prone the
first couple of years and just bad luck, I guess,
and just couldn't stay on the field. And we always
knew that he had a ton of ability, and you know,
as soon as he was able to stay on the
field consistently, he got traction and and has really taken
off now and he's really coming into his own What.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Did you like most about the win? What what still
bothered you a little bit on Monday or yeah, okay.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
I'd say the penalties were the most bothersome And now
that the officiating crew was a little different than what
we're used to in the Big twelve, particularly in the substitution.
You know, we're having a hard time figuring out how
to sub on defense because they were closing that window
on us.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
They were they weren't holding the ball exactly, and so there.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Was some some some confusion there for us and then
and then, uh, we just committed too many penalties in general.
I mean we had holds and p i s and
and things that we've got to clean up. You can't
be penalized that's severely week after week and having not
bite you in the rear end. I mean it's gonna
you know, we got to clean and typically we're pretty
(06:47):
good team penalty wise, we're you know, we've been in
very you know, the lower half of the league for
a lot of years, uh in penalties. So we got
to get back to uh keeping the uh flags in
the pockets, which like most what I like most, I
would say the way the offense came out and accepted
the challenge because we challenged him and alftime to go
out and finish drives and and uh, you know, not
(07:08):
not in a big negative way, would say, hey, we're
moving the ball up the field. All you got to
do is finish him, and we're fine. That's the only
thing we're not doing is finishing period.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Any concerns with the kicking game, I asked that only
because you know, he drilled one against Rough c l
A And he missed three. And I know he's a
young kicker too, So yeah, where you're at with your kicker.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
He's a he's a talented kid. He's got so much
ability and and but he's a freshman. He just came
out of high school. We gotta we got to understand that.
We do understand that, and uh got an inclination he's
going to make some big kicks for us down the
road and he'll he'll settle in at some point and
had a good practice today and so, uh, we'll see
how things progress. But he's doing an outstanding job kicking off.
(07:46):
I know that's a lot less stressful, but he's he's
putting the ball out of the end zone and we
haven't had to cover many kicks this season, so that's
that's been a positive. But but you're right, missing those
uh three in a row was and it was a
the hold was questionable on the third one, So that really,
uh you know, is probably not his fault.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
And the other thing and you addressed this in the
in your media session yesterday. Tough loss in the secondary
with Rabbit Evantus being done for the year.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yeah, that's that's too bad. It just breaks your heart.
I mean, he's a guy that has battled injury since
he's got here and just to see him have that
injury that season ending was was heartbreaking, like I said,
And also I guess I should say that Dadrian Zipper
is out for the season. He's he had surgery the
other day and and so he's gonna be on the
(08:33):
shelf until spring ball. So those are two guys right
now that we know are lost for the season.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Which is disappointing because he showed you some flashes last
year at the end of the year, absolutely and even
in the spring he played pretty well for you too
with time. So the good news is you've got a
lot of receivers and you've spread the ball around. But
I know you guys were hoping to have Dadrinu as
part of that pass game.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Yeah, he's one of the guys that could take the
top off the defense. And if there's something that we
lack right now, that's probably that. And that's a big
reason why Jackson Benny is over on that side of
the ball, because he's got really good speed and really
able to help with that, as as does Smith Snoden.
Although Smith is not a really up the field receiver,
he's more of a slash type of guy. You know
(09:13):
a slot receiver that that can do some skill sets
a little different.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Than that Rabbit Evans injury. Who do you ask to
step up behind him in that secondary that you can
You can shift a guy like Nate Richie over, he
can play. He and Tao Johnson, But who are who
are some of the other guys that will be asked
to kind of step up and fill that way.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Well, Nate Tilban, you know he's a freshman, and Hi Mouana,
the Wana kids is is going to need to step
up as well. And and if we have to, Jackson
Benny can play safety as well. He's playing nickel right
now on defense exclusively, but he has a good background
in safety. He spent a lot of time there on
our program at safety. So if it comes down to that,
(09:51):
we can always shift him inside or to the safety spot,
put Smith snode In back in the nickel, and then
bring in another core on the outside.
Speaker 2 (10:00):

the first three games that have caught our eye at
least mine and get coaches thoughts on that. A couple
of players coming in. We'll talk to John Henry Daily
and of course the quarterback Devin dan Pierre, and a
lot on the team they're playing on Saturday. Very good
Texas Tech Red Raider team. All coming up on the
Kyle Whittingham Coaches Show right here from ESPN seven hundred
and the Ute Sports Radio Network.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
You are listening to the Kyle Whittingham Coaches Show brought
to you by Pepsi on ESPN seven hundred and the
Ute Sports Radio Network.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Kyle Winningham Coaches Show to an IPM brought to you
by Pepsi Zero Sugar. Pepsi's proud partner of University of
Utah Football. Grab at Pepsi zero Sugar cheer on the
Utes football better a little Pepsi, especially Utah football may
need that. Pepsi. On Saturday, Month it's an early game.
It's a ten am game. Pregame begins at eight am
(11:16):
for us. We'll be in the booth this week because
our friends from the Big Newt kickoff on Fox are
kind of taking that whole area up over there. So
if you want to get out and watch them, now,
probably get out there. They go on there. Dave Portno'i'll
go on the here at like seven. Then Rob Stone
and Urban Meyer and crew will go on at about
eight o'clock. They'll fill up that area, so it's free
to the public. Come on out and watch and support
(11:36):
and make some noise and support Utah football. Kyle Whittingham
with us here. How are you feeling about that ten
am kick? You like it?
Speaker 3 (11:42):
I love it, and like I've said that many many
times before, and I hope, hope our fans don't mind it.
I mean, you know, it's part of college football. You
got to be able to kick off whenever they tell
you to. And I'm sure they'll be there in full
force and really show the nation what rice echos, the environment,
rice ecles is all about.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
I said this to a bunch of people this week.
When your program is the reason you guys are playing
at ten am is because you're good. You're in the
prime Fox television slot that has the most eyeballs all
day long on it.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Exactly. Our players have earned that, you know, through their play,
and it's a great opportunity to showcase, you know, our
entire university to the nation.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Are we making too much of the early start from
the players standpoint?
Speaker 3 (12:24):
I think you are. The players are resilting.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
I'm not, but a lot of people are.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
Yeah, yeah, they're you know, players can handle pretty much anything.
I mean, you could literally kick off at midnight and
they'd handle it. I mean, they're just young kids and
tons of energy, and they're they're excited, and I don't
think there's any of them that are disappointed at all
that we got that ten o'clock slot.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
We're with you guys on the road, the broadcast team
and that, and we know I would guess they would
rather get up with that energy, have a little something
to eat and play than sit around because for those
night games, you guys get up to your routine, but
you're sitting in the hotel for eight or nine or
ten hours.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
We are, and that seems those are long days. They are,
and especially when it's a non Saturday. You know, if
you're playing Thursday night or Friday night and there's no
college football to watch, I mean, those days are brutal,
and so that's probably the most difficult time slot. It's
a late Thursday night or Friday night kickoff. But like
I said, we never complained about the schedule. You just
play what's laid out in front of you and there
(13:19):
you go.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
That's the set for this weekend. And then we found
out the West Virginia game in a week is a
one thirty Mountain Time kickoff. All right, I want to
run a couple of guys that have caught my you know,
we've talked a lot about Devin and some other guy,
John Henry Daily speaking of Devon day up here. He's
going to join us here in a few minutes. But
there's some other guys that haven't necessarily been the headline
guys that I've really been impressed with. One of them
(13:41):
is Devon's former teammate at New Mexico, Ryan Davis. Well,
Ryan's got nineteen catches already, had ten catches, ninety one yards,
he's got a touchdown already, But he seems to be
the guy that picks up those tough yards for you,
those over the middle yards. And he's also a guy
that you can tell has a great report with Devin.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
He does, and that obviously comes with playing together last
year and they've got a lot of confidence in each other.
And Ryan does do that dirty work. He's a guy
that finds soft spots in his zones and runs great
routes and has great hands, fearless over the middle. And
he's what third in the league right now, I think
in total receptions, and so he's off to a really
good start. And r D we call him r D,
(14:20):
you know, that's what they've called him for years, I guess.
But in the receiver room, he is really the leader
of that room right now and everyone looks to him.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
The other guy that I've really enjoyed watching, and we
got a glimpse of him last year, but he wasn't
a real prominent part of what she is. Hunter Andrews.
You want to talk about the Swiss Army knife of
your offense. You can line him up at wildcat, quarterback,
tight end, h back, running back and he does them
all well. You know, he had one hundred and eight.
He's got one hundred and eight yards on the year
rushing right now nine yards of carry and eight catches
(14:51):
for sixty three yards right now too. He's just done
a little bit of everything for you, and he seems
very comfortable, comfortable cop playing all those positions he does.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
And he's got a great background as a running back
in high school rush for over a thout, well over
a thousand yards his senior year, and we're really excited
about what he's doing. And we made that move. It
was back in spring, I believe, early spring, and he
was very receptive to it, and that has really paid
dividends because you just outlined all the things he does
for us, and including all those things he blocks really well.
(15:21):
He's an excellent blocker. And so he's a guy that
is exactly the Swiss Army Knife of the offense and
a guy that Jason Beck in his offenses seems to
have found that guy most years. And this is his version,
the newest iteration of that, I guess.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yeah. We talked to him in the postgame show after
the Wyo game the other night and he said he
loves the role. He says, because I'm on the field
all the time and there's a good chance I'm going
to get the ball in a lot of different ways
he goes. I love it, and you know, you can
see his skill set when you land him up at
Wildcats to kind of kill the game off the other night.
He runs the ball really well and follows that blocking
really well and showed a little burst too.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
He does and if you watch his high school tape
that you know doesn't surprise you, cause that's what he
did in high school. And he's got a real knack
for finding those creases. And he's two hundred and thirty pounds,
he's a lower he's tough to bring down, and he's
such a tough individual anyways, you know, mentally and physically,
and so he's he's one of those guys that we
got out of Texas and has been a real plus
for us.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
It's great because you've got Rogers and Parker who are
a little bit smaller, quicker, faster, but he's that power
He's kind of that power back you need.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
He is he is, and I think you're going to
see him continuing to do the things he's done in
the first three games all season long.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
The other guy I wanted to mention, he's on the
defensive side of the football, I think in a lot
of places where they weren't stacked at his position, he
would probably start. He will probably start for you next year.
Trey Reynolds, Well, what a year he's having. He contributed
a little bit for you last year, but he's playing
a lot sub package stuff for you and some other stuff.
But he's just really doing a nice job. And like
I said, if you didn't have Lander, Barton, John new
(16:53):
Hall and Levanni de Mooney right there, he'd be in
your starting lineup, and he'd start for most teams in
the league.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
He wouldn't. He's really done an exceptional job of special
teams well so far the show, I think he's on
every single special team. And and he's a tough kid.
He's a he's a throwback linebacker, you know, he's one
of those like you. He's a plugger. Yes, he's better
than I ever was. But he's he's very athletic to
him and the whole family is is athletic, and and
you know they play baseball and football and track and
(17:18):
and uh. He's just a guy that that has gotten
better and better since he's been in the program and
been patient, you know, hasn't got antsy and hit the portal,
you know, and it's going to pay off for him.
I really believe it's gonna pay off.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
He'd be a neck roll guy if you would have
played or forty years ago, like how Winningham was. He
always every team had that one middle linebacker that had
the big old neck roll on. You wore one for
a lot.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
I did, I did. They called him a horseshoe back then.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
Yeah. Anyway, all right, as we go to break, speaking
of guys that have been patient, he's going to come
in here and join us in a minute. John Henry
Daily five sacks that leads the nation. He's tied for
the lead in the country. Uh, he's also tied for
the lead, if not outright with tackles for loss in
the conference with four and a half. He plays the
run very well too. He's got that great motor transferred
(18:03):
here from BYU a year ago. How have you seen
him grow in his position over the last year.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
He might be the most pleasant surprise on the team.
As far as returning guys, you know, we got JJ,
Buchannons and Devin obviously for the new guys that have
really made a huge impact. But as far as returning guys,
that have up their level of play and really blossomed.
He's a guy and he's he's such a fun guy
to be around a practice. I mean, he goes full
speed from start to finish. He loves football. He's always
(18:30):
got a smile on his face, and his just his
enthusiasm and his energy is infectious. It permeates throughout the defense.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
He comes from a pretty big football family he does.
His dad, his brothers, his uncles all football players.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
Yeah, and we're grateful that he's here and right now
he's our premier pass rusher at this point.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
He's doing a heck of a job. So John Henry
Day's going to join us. Coming up on the other
side here in the Kyle witting Aam Show. Just a
reminder bud Light proud sponsored utaih Athletics, easy to drink
and easy to enjoy. After John Henry we'll talk to
Devin dam Pier and then Kyle and I will dig
into the Texas Tech Red Raiders. All that coming up
ahead here on the Kyle Wittingham Coaches Show on a
Tuesday night from the Echos Football Building on campus and
(19:09):

(19:45):
them this week before they can worry about the Mountaineers.
They've got the Red Raiders coming in. And we have
got the guy that's been maybe the standout on the
defensive side of the football so far for Utah this year,
redshirt sophomore defensive end John henry Day.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
How are you I'm doing great? How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (19:59):
I'm doing fantastic. Thanks for doing this. So how you
feel in three games into the season.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
Feeling great? I mean, we got a lot left to prove,
but happy about the work we've done so far.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
You got to play a little bit last year, but
it was kind of in a reserve role and things
like that. You're a much bigger part of the defense
this year. How's that feel?
Speaker 5 (20:16):
It feels amazing.
Speaker 6 (20:17):
Honestly, just going out there being able to help this
team win games is something that I've always looked forward
to as a little kid, being able to go to
a Division I school and be able to make an
impact and help win some big games.
Speaker 5 (20:26):
So I've been loving it.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
Well, winning's fun. Getting numbers is fun too. You're doing
both those things right now. All right, let's talk a
little bit about the football family you're from, because you
are from a football family. Your dad linebacker at BYU.
Your brother, I think is a defensive end at Rice.
Is that right?
Speaker 5 (20:43):
That's right?
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Okay? Your uncles everybody knows, Taysom Hill, Dave Nixon, Craig Bills,
all football players as well. Was there any doubt growing
up you were going to be a football player.
Speaker 6 (20:54):
Honestly, my parents never pushed me in a certain direction.
I was playing I was running track, I was playing basketball,
thing in between, so I was never really four cent
a direction. I finally ended up deciding, you know, going
into high school that I just wanted to focus on football.
But it was a toss up between a ton of
sports growing up.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Did you have a first love? I mean, a lot
of guys are really good at football, but my first
love was basketball. Did you have a first love? Was
it football or something else?
Speaker 6 (21:18):
I definitely, I don't know. I think my first love
was just being able to compete with my older brother.
It was like my little dream right of being able
to play up on my older brother's team. I get
to play with him all the time as Greg I
pulled up for basketball and football and being able to
share the field with him. So it was just something
I look forward to in all aspects of competitiveness.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
You were that guy, weren't you They get called up
to play with the older kids. Yeah, so well, yeah, yeah, yeah,
that's that was It was always that one guy. You're like, oh,
that guy's brother's gonna get called up. He's going to
take my playing time, And sure enough, when took our
playing time. How to growing up in that household with
a lot of athletes around kind of make you into
the player you are today.
Speaker 6 (21:55):
Yeah, I think just looking at the example of my
parents and how dedicated and hard working they are in
the roles that they do, whether it' seeing my dad
right who's just buses but every single day to provide
for the family and do a fantastic job at what
he does. It's always instilled in me a great work
ethic that if you want something, then you got to
work for it. And anybody can work hard, but you
got to work smart and hard, and that's what differentiates
(22:16):
people from other people. So growing up in that atmosphere
where you know there's definitely some competitive people who like
to be the best at what they do, definitely compelled
me to reach new heights that I wouldn't have otherwise.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
So you committed to byu. You were there for a year.
What made what prompted the decision to leave and then
ultimately come here to Utah.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
Yeah, honestly, it's a long story.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
But tell me, I.
Speaker 6 (22:40):
Went over there to play with my brother and things
just didn't work out. Instead of being able to play
with them, I was competing against them for a job
and it's just not something that I wanted to do.
You know, I love my brother and I want to
see him succeed as well, and it just it just
wasn't what I had gone I went there for, so
I decided to take a different ROUNDE.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
So what led you to Utah? You decided to go
into the transfer portal. You probably had lots of options
out there. I'm sure Utah recruited you out of high
school too. You're down there, You're not far away. Yeah,
So what ultimately said, Let's let's go north and play
play for Kyle Whittingham.
Speaker 6 (23:11):
Honestly, it was a crazy experience getting recruited and going
through all that. I think what brought me to Utah
was number one coach Powell and Morgan Scalley, and also
knowing that you have Kyle Whittingham here as a head coach,
and you say, wow, what a group of coaches. I
would love to play for Kyle Whittingham. I mean, what
an honor, right, what a privilege. So coming in here,
(23:32):
I knew that I was going to get coach to
the bet as one of the best in the country.
Speaker 5 (23:36):
Right. See Jona Ellis got there tear it up.
Speaker 6 (23:38):
I'm like, wow, these these coaches really know how to
coach up these players to be able to go out
there and have incredible success on the field. So It
made me want to come because at the end of
the day, I'm I'm a competitor and I want to
compete against the best to be the best.
Speaker 5 (23:51):
And that's what I knew Utah had.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
So what's it like being in that room? You just
mentioned it. Jonah Ellis, who's killing it for the Broncos
right now, but Utah, you know, really in Kyle Whittingham's
era and even going back before that's had a great
history of defensive ends. You know, guys like Nate Orchard,
Hunter Demick, who I know a lot of people have
compared you to not a bad comparison, played in the
NFL for a while, Mika Tafua, Bradley and I these
(24:14):
are some really good What's it like to be in
that room and be coached by Lewis Powell?
Speaker 5 (24:18):
I mean, it's amazing Coach Powell.
Speaker 6 (24:19):
He really knows how to let you be you as
a player, but also hold you accountable for what your job's.
Speaker 5 (24:24):
Supposed to be on the field.
Speaker 6 (24:25):
And you know, coming in here last year you got
Conor O'Toole and Van Fielinger, and they really set the
standard for what's expected. It's hey, we're going to practice
so hard, that games are going to be easy, and
that's always been the mindset here and so honestly, coming
into the room, I felt like I was honestly just
coming too my family. I mean I was welcomed with
open arms and fantastic guys and this year, same thing,
(24:46):
amazing room, and it just fires me up to be
able to go out there and play with them.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Another guy in that room did what you did a
few years ago so he could play with his brother.
That's Logan Fano. He began his career down south, and
now he's here. Cash, Dylan's in that room, Paul, if
it's Gerald's in that room, Lance Holtzklaw's in that room.
That's a competitive room right there, John Daily.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
It is it is.
Speaker 6 (25:07):
I mean, Logan's our team captain and leader. He's a
fantastic player, and being able to play alongside him, learn
from him, and you know, the way that he helps
me out to become a better player, has been an
amazing experience. And like you said, we got Paul Fitzgerald,
you got Cash, you got all these other guys in
the room, Lance who want to be the guy as well,
And so it just pushes everybody to compete every single
(25:27):
day to be able to attain that.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
John Henry daily with us for a couple more minutes
here on the Kylewit A Game Coaches Show. So you
are you a believer in the iron sharpens iron theory.
What's it like going against that Utah offensive line line?
It up against either Caleb Lomu or Spencer Fano. Is
that making you guys better?
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (25:45):
So much better.
Speaker 6 (25:46):
I mean, wow, those guys are some amazing athletes and
amazing players, and you know they do some things that
other guys just simply can't. And so going and going
after every single day. And man, I don't like getting blocked.
I hey, get him blocked. You know, it takes me off.
So whenever they've blogged me get fired off. I'm gonna
go twice as hard this next rep. And they're like, well,
you're not gonna beat me. And so we started going
after it. And it's just a blost being able to
(26:07):
play with some fantastic players who make me better as
a player, and hopefully I'm able to make them better
as well.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
One of the reasons you come to a place like
Utah is to playing big games and compete for conference championships. Well,
you're gonna play in your first really big game as
a youth. Coming up on Saturday. The nation will be
watching Fox Big noon kickoffs here. But more importantly, a
really good Texas Tech team is coming in here to town.
What are you expecting on Saturday when you line up
(26:34):
over there across the street at Rice Ecles against the
Red Raiders.
Speaker 6 (26:37):
I mean, Coach Galley was talking about it earlier today.
It's no different than any other game. He said that
every single game is a big game. And obviously we
got Texas Tech coming in this week, and what they
can expect from us is we're going to be a physical, physical,
technically sound team who's going to do our assignment extremely well.
We're gonna fly around, You're gonna see effort plays all
over the place, and we're gonna get after it. I mean,
(26:57):
we're some ballhowks and we're nasty about it. And so
that's what they can expect when they come over here
to Rice Cycles.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
Do you feel like you guys are ready for this game?
You played three already, This will be the best team
you face. Do you feel like you guys are ready
for this kind of competition?
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Of course?
Speaker 6 (27:11):
I mean today was our first practice of the week
preparing for them. We got a couple more days to
be able to prepare, but I feel like everybody's dialed
in and we all want to go out.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
There and show everybody what we can do.
Speaker 6 (27:19):
So I'd say I'm excited to go out there and
be able to showcase my talents and also the high
team together to show the nation what we can do.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Well. You should be because these are the fun ones.
These are why you come play at places like Utah
to enjoy them. Hey, it's been fun watching it so far.
Have a good week of practice. We'll see on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
All right, Thank you, appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (27:38):

Make sure everybody's butts are in the seats at ten

Gonna be a fun game. I know Devin Dan Pierre's
excited about this game coming up on Saturday, aren't you
you know? You know, I know you're a big smile.
You always have a smile at the day. It looks
(28:54):
a little bigger today. All right, we'll get to the
game in a minute. You're three games into the season,
give me the Devin dam Pier grade on how you
and the offense have performed so far.
Speaker 4 (29:05):
You know, I'm pretty I'm pretty hard on my boys.
Speaker 7 (29:07):
Uh you know, I thought, first, uh, first game rolling obviously,
second game, I thought we you know, we played well.
Is also killed ourselves on a couple of drives. And
to be honest, it's it's funny the third game everyone
thinks it was you know though the scoreboard wise, you know,
it did hurt, but we actually put up more yards
in the first half, which is we just need to
(29:30):
learn how to finish drives earlier.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
But uh, you know, I'm happy that that it did
come up.
Speaker 7 (29:34):
The adversity that we went through as a team, to
have our defense have our back during that whole entire halftime,
and just the offense to be able to lock in
and come back out.
Speaker 4 (29:44):
You know, I love where we're at.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
I want to talk to you about a couple of
things from that game. One we'll call it minor adversity
because you guys were in control, but it was minor adversity.
On the one scoring drive of the second half, you
guys had not one, not two, but I think three penalties.
You'd moved forward, get the penalty. That's some adversity, and
a lot of times penalties can kill the drive. Didn't
kill that drive, Devin. So what's the conversation. You're the
(30:08):
leader in the huddle, you're on the field with the fellas,
holding penalty happens or blocking the back something happens. What's
your conversation after they move you back ten yards you
lose a big play, how do you address that with
the guys? And how did you guys deal with that
on Saturday?
Speaker 7 (30:22):
Yeah, you know, I always tell them, like, you know,
I make mistakes there in the game too, So when
they make their mistakes, you know, I got your bag
just like you.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
Had mine when I made my mistake.
Speaker 7 (30:29):
So you know, I let those boys know that, you know,
just go on, move on to the next play. We're
gonna make up for it, I mean. And then just
when everybody believes in that we're gonna make up these
yard you know, we tend to get things rolling.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
And some of those mistakes, to be fair, offensive linemen
make to protect you. Sometimes they're making their mistakes, so
those defensive linemen don't get to you, all right. The
other thing I wanted to ask about walk me through
the touchdown de Larry, because that was a crazy play
all the way through. Walk me through that.
Speaker 7 (30:56):
Yeah, So I was looking for I was gonna throw
it down our to the left. I couldn't figure out
who I was gonna throw to yet. I was trying
to figure I was gonna get open. And the ball
just kind of slipped. But when the ball slipped, like
I could, I could, I could tell I was well protected.
So I knew, like I didn't have to go fall
on the ball. I could just go run and pick
it up. And uh, when I turned around, I just
(31:17):
somehow called Larry. He was running inside and he just
burst it out. I kind of seen him chopping his
feet and uh the timing of you know, the throwing
where he got he got wide open, and it was
it was nice.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Even sang bang. I'm guessing you didn't have time to
look at anybody else. You kind of pick up your head.
Is he the first guy you see and that's where
you decided to go?
Speaker 7 (31:36):
Yeah, yeah, I said, I saw our other receiver to
the to that side too, But yeah, I just thought
Larry was Larry was an end zone.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
I was happy for well, But the play was fun,
really happy for Larry because three games in he didn't
have a catch yet. But he's been out there blocking
and busting his butt, running his routes. So to be
able to get a touchdown on a play like that
and be able to pay off his first catches at
you with a touchdown, it's pretty cool.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
Yeah, no, super cool.
Speaker 7 (32:01):
I always talk about, you know, those guys that do
the extra things that you know aren't are on the
stash sheets.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
Are you know?
Speaker 7 (32:08):
Just yeah, right, the things people don't understand are just
don't see. Larry's one of those guys who who does
all that. So it's it's nice to see he gets
a reward for how are he's been working.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Some people know your story, some people don't. You're in
New Mexico a year ago. Jason Beck's your coach, Rogers
is your tail one of your tailbacks, Rd's one of
your wide receivers. But how did you make the decision
to come to Utah When you decided to leave New Mexico?
You know, was it driven by Jason Beck coming here?
Was it you and your family talking things over? What
what went into that decision? Devin?
Speaker 7 (32:39):
Yeah, you know, I think I have a really genuine
relationship with coach Beck. It's always been more than football
with us, So you know that was obviously huge to
just be able to keep that family orientated. Uh, player
to coach relationship and uh, you know you get to
meet coach Away. You know, I've heard so much about
him just being outside of this program, so just getting
(32:59):
the neat him, you know why he went it out
of me and out of.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
His team and what he sees and just just all that.
You know, I was all on board for that as well.
And the offensive line that box for me.
Speaker 7 (33:10):
Uh, you know, that's huge to be protected and you
can you can do a lot of things when you
got an old line that we have, so uh, the
offense is you know, very where I can run and
do what I do best.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
Well. You also had a little inside information on the
program because your brother was here last year.
Speaker 7 (33:26):
Yeah, and so that's when we get to the family side,
the culture of this team. So yeah, my older brother,
Dorian Singer, when he was here, you know, he called me,
he was like, dude, that's that's like a real family squad.
Like out of all the three colleges I've been to,
nothing's like Utah. It's real family. The grind is real.
Those guys want to make it to the next level,
(33:47):
so practices and just everything is so competitive.
Speaker 4 (33:49):
So you know, that's that's where I want to be at.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
It feels like everything lined up from coach back to
a couple of teammates, to meeting coach wid to the program,
and then when you have the family buy into it
just helps, right.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
Yeah, for sure, for sure.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
So you seem to really love playing football. You can
tell when guys just love to play ball. You seem
to be one of those guys that loves to play ball.
What do you love about football?
Speaker 4 (34:10):
What?
Speaker 2 (34:10):
What? What is it about playing quarterback and playing football
that you just you love? Devin?
Speaker 7 (34:14):
Yeah, there's there's like three things. You know, winning, winning
as a team. Uh, that's a it's a different feeling
like when individually is a thing. But just went in
with a group of guys, Uh, you know, that's that's
the real thing. And uh again, just the guys you meet,
the relationships that.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
Go on football happens to be something.
Speaker 7 (34:34):
You know, I'm able to connect with people just so
much longer than uh just playing with them.
Speaker 4 (34:40):
Yeah, it's just one of those sports.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
How's your experience been so far? In your nine months here,
you had Spring, you've had summer. It feels like it's
been good from the outside, But is it what you
hoped it would be?
Speaker 4 (34:51):
Yeah? Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 7 (34:53):
The guys, the guys I've met, and I'm with a
teammate all the time, Like there's never a time I'm
not chilling with some one are getting to know one
of my teammates.
Speaker 4 (35:02):
It's it's awesome here.
Speaker 7 (35:03):
And uh, just the way, like the people that we
don't talk about outside of them, the trainers and whatnot,
like the whole programs is great.
Speaker 4 (35:12):
So I'm really happy to be here.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Devin dam peer with us for a couple of more minutes.
Is Saturday gonna be the biggest game you've ever played in?
Speaker 4 (35:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (35:22):
Meaning wise, Yes, I've never been on a rank team,
so uh, you know, and we're doing a great job
of holding that. And uh yeah, I mean to go
against another ring team that's very close to us first conference.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
Game as well.
Speaker 7 (35:35):
Yeah, I mean, there's there's a lot of good things
behind this game, and you know, I think it's well
deserved by our team.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
I think we work hard for this moment. So just
to go out there and BS.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
You've you've put the tape in. You've watched a little
Texas Tech already. What stands out about the Red Raiders.
Speaker 7 (35:48):
Yeah, those boys get after they're they're fast on that
defensive side, very decisive on what they do, and uh,
just the way they hold their coverage and everything.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
So you know, I'm really excited, best on best.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
These are the type of games should come to a
place like you taught to play in, right.
Speaker 4 (36:04):
Yeah, yeah, for sure, these are the games you want
to play in.
Speaker 2 (36:06):
That's cool. Before I let you go, what are you
expecting from the atmosphere and from Texas Tech? What are
you expecting Saturday at Rice Cycle Stadium.
Speaker 7 (36:14):
I'm expecting echoes to give out. Yeah, I'm expecting. I'm
expecting a lot of our fan base. I think that
they've they've earned that expectation though, you know, our fans
do do it the best.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
We're a little slept on some we're slept on.
Speaker 7 (36:28):
To certain people, and we're not slept on the people
that's been here when Rice Cycles is rocking.
Speaker 4 (36:33):
So I think we're gonna get that that crowd coming
into this game.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
You can ask Caleb Williams in some of those USC trophans,
A couple of times they came in here, and your
brother may have came in here with USC one time
and played too. I don't remember if he was with
the Trojans then. But when that place gets going, and
I think it will on Saturday, you've only experienced it
for cal Paly, Saturday will be a different animal, little bit.
Speaker 4 (36:54):
Yeah, I heard it's a real thing, so we're ready
for it.
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Well, hey, have a good week of practice. It's great
to see and keep things going.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
Thank you appreciate it.

(37:37):
You've got a good win. A Devin dam Pier Kyle,
We got a nugget.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
He's he's just incredible person, leader, player, uh everything, He's
a whole package. And our players, as I've said many
times before, I have really embraced him. He's he's fit
right into our culture. And uh, there's a not a
guy on the football team that doesn't just respect him
to the utmost.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
He's done a great job so far. First time for
you and really first time for Utah at Rice Eckels
playing Texas Tech. Only two other times they were way
back in the early seventies when you were just a
wei lad down in southern California. So what does the
tape tell you about the Red Raiders when you put
it on.
Speaker 3 (38:16):
Well, they're good on offense, especially statistically, as good as
there is in the country. In fact, they're leading the
nation in scoring offense, second the nation in total offense.
They run it well, they throw it well, they're good
on third down, they're good in the red zone. I mean,
there's good. You know, they've got a great scheme, quarterback
(38:39):
is very efficient. Offensive line is rock solid. They got
two really good athletic tight ends. The receiving corps is
making plays up the field. And they're big guys, you know,
six four six, three six. Two running backs run hard
and number twenty has exceptional hands. And they threw in
the ball a little bit out of the backfield.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
Yeah that's Williams.
Speaker 3 (38:56):
Yeah, I'm really impressed with that guy, especially running routes
and so really there's no weakness on their offense. I mean,
that's that's who they are.
Speaker 5 (39:03):
Now.
Speaker 3 (39:04):
You know, we hope we had to try to slow
them down somehow, but you know, so far, to this point,
nobody has. Nobody's had an answer.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
They've been good. They are averaging fifty eight points a game.
Baron Morton's their quarterback. He's a veteran guy. He's been
around for a long time. Played most of last year,
had a good year before he got hurt near the
end of the year. What stands out about Morton as
a quarterback?
Speaker 3 (39:21):
Good decision maker, throws the deep box, actually will they
make a living throwing the deep ball, and and the
receivers do a great job, you know, making catches and
plays up the field. He's a smart kid, appears to
be a great leader. You know, I can't see that
for sure, say that for sure, not around him obviously
every day, but but he appears that way on the field.
And they got a solid up front to solid guys
(39:43):
up front. The tackles are both six' eight and that
is really a huge advantage to have that length on the.
Edges it's really difficult to get to THE qb from
the from the. Edge when they got those you, know
that reach and and just that.
Speaker 2 (39:54):
Wingspan they they made a lot of upgrades to their
defense of the Offseason ortal And nil as, well especially
those four defensive. Linemen, right what what stands out of
you saw a couple of. Them you've seen a couple
of those. Guys The bailey kid played AT STAN i
think the other one was AT ucf last. Year so
what stands out about that? Front for?
Speaker 3 (40:13):
Speed rush on the edges they got they had really
really Explosive and that'll be a great matchup because we
got two really good. Tackles we're you, know not only,
us but the scouts are really high on our tackles
and and so that'll be a very intriguing matchup to
see how that. Goes and the interior guys are athletic
and get good push and they did did a great,
(40:34):
job you, know really supplementing their roster this.
Speaker 2 (40:37):
Offseason and by the, way their their star. Linebacker interesting,
note played For Jason Beckett. Virginia he was a. Quarterback
Jacob rodriguez began his career as a. Quarterback he was
coached By jason beck for one year that he. Transferred
he's At texas get transferred back To Texas. Tech they
moved him to the linebacker and now he's In all conference.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
Lineback there you, go there you. Go quarterbacks are usually
really good. Athletes we've had that happened. Here we've had
taken three or four qbs and put them in different
various spots on defense and they've.
Speaker 2 (41:05):

Kyle he's gonna be on The Crimson corner podcast which
drawn us tomorrow, morning and he's really. Pumped he's not
been to a game here At Rice eckels since that
last game AGAINST byu back in two thousand and. Four
he's been back for different, things you've had to be coaching,
clinics but he's never been back for a. Game what
do you, remember because he told me about, this what
do you remember about your first meeting with him when
(43:21):
he was deciding on whether to hire you or not
to keep you on AS.
Speaker 3 (43:24):
Dc, yeah well it was. GOSH i can't remember the
order of how things went, down but we did sit
down for a brief period of. Time but then we
went out to, dinner him And shelley And jamie AND
i and and really hit it off at the. Dinner
that was really the, key is how that dinner went
and seemed to be on the same wavelength and it
seemed to be a good. Fit AND i guess the
(43:46):
rest is, history as they, Say but that's the ONE
i remember most is going out to AND i think
it was down At Ruby River. O, YEAH i think
right down the hill. Exactly and so, anyway that was
really the beginning of the relationship. There and he had
a really good defensive coordinator At Bowling green that he
could have brought and, so, uh you, know as it worked,
(44:06):
out you, KNOW i guess it worked out for, everybody
but but almost didn't, happen and so who knows what
would have transpired if things have gone the other.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
Way, well he did say to me it was one
of the best decisions he's made in his coaching, career
and it's worked out well for. Everybody it's a big
year for. Him he's gonna be honored at the game On,
saturday The National Football foundations giving him an award, obviously
and then he'll go into The hall Of fame later this.
Speaker 3 (44:27):
Year we are very very well. DESERVED i mean there's
a you, know not many guys that can that can
coach like he.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
Can what does Having Big noon here mean for the
program and for the university in your?
Speaker 3 (44:38):
Mind, well it's great. EXPOSURE i was just like When
College Game day has been here two or three, times
and and this is The fox version of that, obviously
and The fox, equivalent and, uh you, know it's good
for the university as a, whole it's good for the
athletic department as a, whole and and obviously a good
exposure for a. Program and you, know we got to play.
Well that's that's part of it, too is when you
when you do how these opportunities you got to you
(45:00):
got to show up and really play.
Speaker 2 (45:02):
Well it's free and open to the, public just like
when they're friends AT espn come to. Town you can show.
Up it's at fifth Fifth south and guardsmen right there
on the corner next to The Big smith's tent and
start showing up five thirty six. O'clock they go on
the air at seven up until about ten and come
out and See urban and his guys with the big
new kickoff all right BEFORE i let you, go what's
(45:22):
got to happen for you Guys saturday to come out
with a W, well.
Speaker 3 (45:25):
Same thing we did in the second. Half we got
to finish. Drives and in this day and, age you
only get a lot of games nine or ten possessions
and that's. IT i remember WHEN i first got here To,
utah you, know thirty years, ago it was very common
to get, fourteen, fifteen sixteen. Possessions but that's not the case.
Anymore the game is, shortened and you, know you get ten,
possessions and everything's magnified if you don't finish a few,
drives if you turn it over a few. TIMES i,
(45:47):
mean it's so much more magnified than it used to.
Be and so those possessions are valuable and you got
to make the most of, them and that's what we
got to.
Speaker 2 (45:54):
Do that will Be saturday pregame coverage on the flagship
HOME espn seven Under Porter larson's up real early to
talk on the radio at six. Am Scott sly AND
i from the booth at the stadium at. Eight then
