Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Fantasy Hockey Life, presented by fan Tracks. Here's
your source of information and analysis to help you win
your fantasy hockey league.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Block off hot A, step hit on, staylock.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Here's your hosts, Jesse Sevier and Victor Nuno Gantasy Hockey
Live once again.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Jesse Severe Fan Tracks, Victor Nunhoe the Fantasy Hockey Doctor.
How are you doing today, Victor?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
I'm doing awesome. Jesse, how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
I'm doing great. I'm doing great. I'm looking forward. We're
getting closer and closer to this new hockey season. I'm
gonna wonder if you ever thought about you You've done
like a little informal meet up with some fantasy hockey
livers right like you, You've just happened to be somewhere
on the road met people. I've been wondering lately if
I tried to go to a Milwaukee Admirals game, I
(00:54):
wonder if other people would would show up and buy
me a diet pepsi or something. I don't like diapepsi
but still would be. You don't have to buy them anything.
I just show up and watch a game together. So
you think that would ever? Is that something we ought
to try sometime doing the meetup. Yeah, just some kind
of we're all just going to go to the same
game type meet up.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
I think first up, Jesse, you and I need to
meet in person, which still has ever happened. I think
people may be surprised to hear that, but not for person. Nope,
not for lack of trying. It just hasn't quite worked
out yet. But that would be great, and that would
if that ever does happen, then we absolutely need to
make an event out of it. Yeah. When I was
in Vancouver, met up with some people, actually a couple
(01:34):
of guys. Matt was one of them and his friend
drove all the way down from Vancouver to Vegas last
year and we met up at the drafts. I've met
some people here and there at different drafts and things,
but the Vancouver meetup was a little bit more planned
and we reached out and see if anyone was around.
I think there was ended up being like eight of
us who got together and so that was fun. Some
people like knew from our fo KK, the league that
(01:57):
we know each other from, but others were listeners who
came by. Yeah, I think that would be fun. We
should definitely make that happen. At some point, would have
to figure out where the best situation is. Part of
it is that I don't know you.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
You might not.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
It sometimes seems like it's hard to get you out
of the house sometimes, Jesse, So you would need to
work on that.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
I'm pretty much a hermit. If you saw at the
beginning of Hot Shots Too, where Topper Harley just you know,
lives in a little house out in the woods and
goes out with his shirt off and chops wood. That's
pretty much what I am, a complete recluse from society,
except that I'm not able to swing an axe. But Victor,
let me tell you something. People could get on our
Fantasy Hockey Life discord. There's no chance you will see
(02:36):
me shirtless swinging an axe, but you could chat with
You got to take me if you're trying to find me,
because there's too much going on at one given time.
But you could chat with all kinds of people. Start
some new leagues with folks who have the same idea
in mind. Just get out there. Don't don't wait around
and say, hey, I'm thinking about starting a league. What
other people think. I know that I'm not getting randos
(02:58):
from social media out who are just going to tell me.
You're going to try to man explain to me why
I don't know anything about hockey because I don't. I
don't take goalies for the first three rounds of the
draft or something like that. But Victor, all they have
to do to get in there is Fantasy Hockey Life
at gmail dot com. One email, one call, that's all
and we'll get you the link and you can come
pop in there. But that's not all you could be
(03:21):
getting from us. We also have some cool content. What
is it.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Yeah, we have lots of bonus content over at patreon
dot com slash Fantasy Hockey Life. You can get all
kinds of patroon casts. I'm doing my Top ten list,
which is a really fun thing, and sometimes we do
bonus episodes and we'll just throw it out there, like
packaging all of Kat Silverman's Goalie takes into one episode
or several episodes, but all together, the top ten lists,
(03:48):
packaging those together. So there's all kinds of bonus content
like that. There's also access to show notes and one
on one roster, Doctor helps and the Tier Dynasty of
the Tidy, all kinds of great stuff. If you want
to join for several different tiers. The top tier gets
you access to the website and all the premium content
over at patreon dot com slash Fantasy Hockey Life.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Be right back to talk to our guests. Brett Holden
is here from Oilers Nation. We're going to talk a
little bit about those Edmonton Oilers. Brett, how you doing today?
Speaker 4 (04:29):
Not too bad? Thank you so much for having me.
Are you guys doing great?
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Man? It's not the worst thing in the world to
be talking oilers. Is not the worst thing in the
world to be an Oilers fan or a Oilers follower,
and not the most painful thing by all means Edmonton season. However,
I got to get the bad news out of the
way first. It ended the same way as the year before.
I'm sure no Oilers fans really want to be reminded
of that. However, I will tell you that Kings fans
(04:54):
have no sympathy for this feeling of having your season
end the same way multiple years in a row. Most
of the Oilers team stats in the regular season, It's funny.
They were closer to the middle of the league in
some ways than the top, and a lot of the
team statistical categories. They only came into the playoffs as
the sixth seed, only five standings points ahead of their
(05:15):
non playoff qualifying neighbors over in Calgary. The Oilers did
lead the league in shots, and they bought at the deadline.
We'll talk about some of those acquisitions later in the show,
but this offseason they've also had to unload a little
bit because they popped right up to the salary cap there.
Evander Kaine, Victor Robertson no longer with the team. Are
(05:35):
the Oilers set up for a third straight clearance Campbell
Bowl and the Stanley Cup last year or next year?
Speaker 4 (05:42):
Brett, Oh, that's a good quest.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
If you ask a lot of people around town that
that's the only way that this season can I wouldn't
even say that's the end goal. That is just you
have to get there, because the end goal right now
is a Stanley Cup.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
There's no absolute You.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
Made it to game seven again, you made it to
Game six again, It's all right, It's time to finish
the job here.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
I like the acquisitions, and honestly, some of the the
subtractions that the Oilers had to make as well were needed.
You mentioned how tight to the cap that they were,
and guys like I'm sure we'll talk about guys like
I Coward, Matt Savoyd, guys that are on discounted contracts
that are going to have to help right now.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
And I think the Oilers are quite aware of.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
That, and they have seemingly made an effort this offseason
and whether a deal has gotten done or at least
they've been in the whispers, they've been trying to find
those discounted deals. So right now it's a matter of
wait and see to see if those, especially those younger guys,
can step up and contribute on a potentially Cup winning team.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Indeed, and there's some really high profile fantasy players to
talk about on this team, and we're gonna start with
no none other than Conor McDavid. He had his lowest
point total in the last several years, where we're picking
knits here a little bit, but he's still managed, of course,
over one hundred point pace, and one hundred points in
sixty seven games is pretty incredible. One hundred and twenty
two is a down year, the lowest he's had actually
(07:16):
since the twenty eighteen nineteen season in terms of his
point pace, which is a long time ago, and his
shots were the lowest since his rookie year. He also
had big drops in his hits and blocks, lending him
two hundred and sixty eighth for bash at three point
seven eight. Not can't complain too much about the block,
shots and hits when you're scoring so many points. We're
(07:36):
here to point these things out. The Edmonton power play
was not as dominant this year as it had been,
finishing twelfth at twenty three point seven, and his power
play points dropped from thirty one to forty dropped to
thirty one from forty four and incredibly seventy one in
the previous two seasons. It's something incredible to be complaining
about only getting thirty one power play points, But when
(07:56):
you're dealing with a super mega superstar like Connor McDavid,
these are the term that you discuss in So I
guess the question is for McDavid because these are only
for people picking at the top of the draft, right,
this is someone Should I pick him one, two, three, four,
somewhere in that range depends on your league settings, But
I guess the question would be is a power play.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
Going to improve?
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Do you think you can get back some of those
shots like where do you think is going to land
in terms of where what he's done previously.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
Yeah, I think here in Edmonton we got to quite
spoiled with the power play that we've seen in the
last couple of years, a literal historic power play a
couple of seasons ago. And now that Glenn Gulletson is
gone for the Edmonton Oilers who did run that power play,
I think we're going to see a lot of different looks. Again,
we talked about guys like Savoy and or. I brought
(08:41):
up guys like Savoy and Howard already, but I think
guys like those will be used more in on the
power play. So I think that's one thing to watch
for McDavid's power play points because they might start using
that secondary unit a little bit more. Conor McDavid a
lot last year. Was not speculating or anything like that.
(09:07):
There there's always conversation with his performance, not hitting the
one and fifty mark or whatever anybody.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Wants was maybe he's playing a little labored here. There
might be some year.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
He played a lot of hockey last year, and he
played a lot of hockey this year as well with
the Four Nations, and he went back to the Cup final.
So I understand the kind of pullback for Connor mc david,
and I think there was a lot of and I
think this went through the dressing room as well, and
(09:38):
we talked to you guys mentioned it or pointed to it,
where the Oilers didn't have the best regular season because
I think a lot of them were pushing for the playoffs,
waiting for the playoffs, especially late in the season when
you're seeing guys like uh, McDavid's hurt Drystle's heard Hymen's
gonna be pulled out of the lineup, and this and that,
(10:01):
and hey, Olivia rodri he's gonna get a start.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Why not?
Speaker 5 (10:04):
So I think last year pulled people back because I
don't think the Oilers were playing for the regular season.
They're playing for the playoffs. I think this year with
the amount of not necessarily growing pains that they might have,
but new players Manjiya Pani's in this lineup who will
help Connor McDavid, and Connor McDavid will help Manjiapani whenever
they do play together. Lines are very fluid up here
(10:26):
in Edmonton apparently, so he will get some time there
as well. I think you're going to see a lot
more of guys trying to figure each other out, which
will result in goals, assists, power play points, things like that,
because they want to make sure that come April, come June,
come May, I always am bad whenever the playoff months
(10:48):
come around, whenever the playoffs do come around, Okay, we're
ready to push. So I think there will be growing pains,
and I think times with Connor McDavid that you're sitting
there going, oh man, my, why is.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
He not scoring three points a night?
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Here?
Speaker 5 (11:02):
For me, I need those nine point seven five points
tonight points. But I think there will definitely be nice
where you're sitting there getting fourteen points seven five points
and you're like, nice, Okay, this is the Connor I know.
I think it's just gonna be a little bit of
the growing pains with some of the new faces in
the lineup for Torono.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
McDavid, you're my guy, Brett. You're talking in fantasy points
even they're talking about fourteen point Yeah. They do seem
to be pulling the old La Kings method of let's
just get in as the eight seed and blitz everybody
after that, we don't need to make any points early.
Victor got to gush about player number one. I get
to gush about player number two, who is of course,
(11:39):
Leon dry Sidle. He took the Rocket Reshard this year,
second in Heart Trophy. Received votes for almost every major award.
I look down the list. Dude got votes in everything.
Fifty two goals, fifty four assists, one hundred and six points.
The amazing thing. I just said one hundred and six points.
You'd be like, yeah, that's really good. He only played
(11:59):
seventy one games due to a lower body injury and
maybe two It's a little unclear to me. While he
did fight through injuries in the twenty twenty four playoffs,
those eleven missed games last year were more than he
had missed in the regular season combined his prior eight years.
That is nine he had combined, so it was still
(12:20):
exception to prove the rule. The Oilers continue to lean
heavily on the talented German. Fourth highest average time on
ice among NHL forwards at twenty one point thirty one.
He shot twenty one point seven percent last year. Some
people would be like, wow, he was on a shooting percentage. Heater,
He's got an eighteen point six percent for his career.
That's not that far off. He's the guy in this
(12:42):
team who seems also to be locked into being an
oiler for life. As we are on counter watch for
what happens next. The dry Cydle is locked in for
a fair bit of change for a long time. So
all that gushing out of the way, just trying to
get aheady of there, Brett, what do you expect in
for dry Titles follow up years?
Speaker 5 (13:02):
Yeah, Actually, it's funny you mentioned Oiler for life. I
think that we're gonna be seeing that little Connor watch
come to an end here coming up soon, probably hopefully
by the end or at the end of this weekend
here coming out.
Speaker 4 (13:15):
But you talk about Oilers for life.
Speaker 5 (13:17):
He is a guy who is the epitome of being
an Edmonton oiler and being able to step up. He
is absolutely the Mark Messier to Connor McDavid's Wayne Gretzky.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
He's just it's funny.
Speaker 5 (13:30):
A colleague of mine, Aaron Bordado at Oiler's Nation, he
said it in a very it seems backhanded, but it's true.
Leon dry Titles should never be the MVP candidate on
this Edmonton Oilers team because you have Connor McDavid.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
And that's a good thing.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
And the fact that Leon dry Title was able to
be that MVP candidate probably should have won it. Sorry
Connor Hellibuk. Leon Drye Title was able to step up
when Connor was gone. When Connor wasn't able to play
to the level that he was able to, Leon was
always there to be able to go, Hey, boys, jump
on my back.
Speaker 4 (14:05):
I'm going to.
Speaker 5 (14:06):
Carry us to six' four win over The Nashville predators
in the middle Of. February he's that guy that if ninety,
seven if, eighteen if, two if any of those star
guys aren't able to step up their game for a
stretch for a, game for whatever it may, Be leon's
just steady eddy and able to pull the team.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
Forward.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
HERE i think we are going to see similar production
From Leon, drysdle probably even. More you mentioned the amount
of games missed he's still. Had i'm going to not
quote tweet whatever quote ish this stat, here but he
missed the most amount of games and while still winning
(14:47):
the scoring title last year outside OF i think At
Austin matthews when he scored his sixty nine or something like,
that he had a fantastic goal clip and THAT i
know a lot of that. COMES a lot of people
say it comes from the power. Play, yeah, Sure, okay
they still all count the, same and he doesn't always
(15:07):
play With connor. McDavid, AGAIN i mentioned that the lines
up here In edmonton are.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
Fluid you'll get a couple shifts.
Speaker 5 (15:14):
In a row where it's ninety seven to twenty nine
and then all of a, Sudden, Okay connor's playing With Nugeen,
hymen and Now Dry title is going to be playing
With Monja Pani savoy Or Monja Pani Howard Howard. Savoy
there's going to be a lot of different ways that
The Edmonton oilers are going to be putting out on the,
ice but twenty nine and ninety seven are always going
(15:35):
to be those, constants and those are going to be
your two producing.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
Lines. Hell they Made vasilli pod Coles in a cult hero.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
In edmonton this past. Year edmonton Loves vasili pod Coles.
In and if he continues to play with a guy Like,
Leon Dry. Title leon loves playing with guys like those
because he dated Pod coleson can go into the dirty,
Areas Dry title can find that open space and all
the puck just happens to come to me in the. Slot,
okay sounds, Good LIKE i think we're going to see
(16:05):
The Edmonton oilers have surrounded Both connor And leon with
guys that who are able to go out, there fight for,
pucks get them to. Pucks they'll go and find open,
spaces AND i think we're gonna we're going to see
the fruits of those labors with guys Like Manjay, Pwani
howard's A Void Pod, Golez Himan nooge like those are
top all, nine top six guys who you can plug
(16:28):
and play wherever in that top six and ninety seven
and twenty nine are gonna benefit from.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
It let's go To nouche because that's usually he is
the third and the pecking order on this team in
terms of the way we discuss. Him but it, DOES
i hate to, say it seems like maybe he's dropped
off a little bit at age thirty, two or at
least the year's results dropped. Off he went from one
hundred and four to forty nine points in two year.
(16:54):
Span that forty nine was his lowest in a full
season since twenty. Sixteen Seventeen advanced deats don't look A ton,
better although his defense appears to be better than ever should.
Be i'd be alarmed with the big drop off In
Ryan Nugent hopkins. Production and is this guy his role
on the team still as a critical piece of this.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Offense he is a critical piece of this team because
he fills a role right.
Speaker 5 (17:18):
Now he's that two way. Guy like you mentioned his defensive,
stats his defensive numbers. Metrics it's there for a reason
because he knows he's.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
The two way.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Guy there's again a cult joke here In. Edington whenever
you see a nuge back, check it normally leads to
a goal for The, oilers because he will be that
guy who's the first guy back breaking up a, breakaway
breaking up a two on, one lifting his stick and
turning it the other way and turning and go and
creating that transition which doesn't it, does especially in. Fantasy
(17:49):
it doesn't show up on the score, board doesn't show
up on the score, clock doesn't give you an assist
always because maybe you're that tertiary assist you made that first.
Play SO i think that you're gonna see a lot
of stuff like that again From, nude where you're, like,
ah if he could just get to sixty, points that
would be. GREAT i think that would be your baseline
(18:10):
for especially fantasy value For Ryan NuGen hopkins is sixty,
points because, yes he is gonna play With connor McDavid
at five on. Five he's gonna play With Leon drivesidle
at points at five on. Five he's gonna be on
that power, Play i'm sure as. Well And i'm sure
he will be on that power play for. Sure but
he's also gonna play third line minutes and be more
of a shutdown guy or a, guy a matchup guy
(18:33):
more than a shutdown, guy a matchup. Guy he'll play
those third line center. Minutes and there's been some discussion
whether or Not Ryan NuGen hopkins is still a center
at THE nhl level right. NOW i think he is
just because of how smart of a hockey Player ryan
NuGen hopkins, is because he can go and make those
breakup plays or play well in his defense event and
(18:54):
then be able to transition it into the offensive end
and create some sort of chance. THERE i think, AGAIN
i wouldn't have those one hundred point level expectations For
Ryan NuGen, hopkins BUT i think you're sitting there Going,
Okay i'm hoping for.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
Sixty, indeed that would be. Great hoping for sixty is
not something we thought we'd say About Zach, hyman but
he was Another oiler who had a bit of a
dip drop in, production finishing with twenty seven goals and
forty four points after two straight seasons around the, eighties
including a fifty four goal effort in twenty three twenty.
(19:30):
Four his shots per game and shooting percentage both dropped
three from three point six to two point eight per,
game and his shooting percentage from eighteen point six to
thirteen point. Two he also only had five secondary, sists
which seems insane and almost completely impossible on The, oilers
but it did, happen and he's stable To connor McDavid
featuring on that top power, play and he should still
(19:52):
get plenty of. Opportunities of, course we know what happened
in the playoffs and his Absence i'm sure was affected
by the whole, team and he probably wants to s
everyone how important he. Is, brett what do you think
we're gonna expect from him in this upcoming?
Speaker 5 (20:04):
Season, yeah the first thing will be when he will.
Return there's, There it just depends on whether or not
he will be able to be there for.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
Game one of the.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
Season he may still miss a couple of weeks at
the start of the.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
Year so if you're.
Speaker 5 (20:20):
Needing quick points off the top, HERE i don't Think
Zach hyman is going to be your. Guy but then
also it turns into when he does come back onto the,
ice how effective is he because he is that hard
into the tough areas type of. Guy you take a
look at his shot, map his goal, map and you're,
like oh my, goodness this. Guy this is a small
(20:41):
town boy living in a lonely world up front here
like he. Is he gets his points from his, areas
and That's Zach hyman where he's going to. Be you
saw that a, lot especially again in the, playoffs with
how effective he can be with his, body and he
was pacing FOR i THINK i Saw Zach lang who
put it out a couple of days. AGO i think
he was pacing for one hundred and thirty hits in the.
(21:03):
Playoffs but if he would have stayed in for The
Stanley cup final and didn't suffer very unfortunate, injury just
such a inocuous type of. Play so the big THING
i think With Zach hymen will be playing the long
game when it comes to. Fantasy you know that he
may not start the, season and if he does start
(21:25):
the season game one with The Edmonton oilers on the active,
roster he might take.
Speaker 4 (21:30):
A little bit of.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
Time so if you're sitting there With Zach hymen inspecting
some big, explosion oh my, goodness this guy's.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
Back he's.
Speaker 5 (21:38):
Healthy The oilers have, young, new exciting additions and. Forwards
Zach hymon might be again a benefactor or. BENEFITTER i
don't know what benefactor. IS i have journalism, degree but
caldn't tell you what it means.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
Of those new.
Speaker 5 (21:53):
GUYS i think you're gonna have to sit there and
wait for the absolute point getting that you will eventually get,
It like we saw at points during last season From
Zach himan that oh, okay this is the Old Zach. Himan
this is a guy who can put maybe not fifty,
goals but thirty, five maybe even forty.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
Goals so it.
Speaker 5 (22:13):
Just depends on your expectation where you Need Zach heiman
to plug and play for your fantasy. Team BUT i
wouldn't expect something real hot off the.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
Top there's so many players who either are or could
become quickly a fantasy irrelevant scoring relevant that we're going
to give you a couple of pick'ems here Next Brett
cover a couple at a time to two steps at a.
Time andrew Manchia Pani Adam, henrique the grizzled veteran who
came in and contributed late in the. Season Amanchia pani
(22:45):
coming over now From washington where he had a pretty
nice bounce back. Year of, course he's also famous for
being across town there or as across the province In,
Alberta Angio. Pani, Hey Adam, henrique who you got in that? One?
Speaker 4 (23:00):
Bread i'm going With Manjay.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
Pani The henriy conversation is kind of similar to The
Nwton hopkins, one Where henri's playing a role right now
and that's the veteran center more not a stepping, stone
but just that hopefully placeholder for a guy Like noah
philp in the. FUTURE i think he's gonna settle in
more as a defensive, guy and he Surprisingly Adam henriek
(23:24):
and block. Shots if you have a block shots category
and you have a you need a deep roster. Guy
Adam henriq might be that, guy but, outside if you're expecting,
Points i'm Going Andrew. Monjupani he's just gonna be put
in better spots and he might be he'll get bottom
six minutes as. Well when you have young, guys young
high level guys LIKE I coward And Matt, savoy you're
(23:47):
gonna want to play them and put them in opportunities
where they can put pucks in the back of the,
net or at least contribute to putting pucks in the
back of the. Net And Manjia pani is a guy
who he has come out and said when he signed
with The Edmonton, OILERS i want to be a guy
who's relied on in all. SITUATIONS i want to kill.
PENALTIES i want to play on the power. PLAY i
want to be five on five in the top. SIX
(24:07):
i want to be five and five bottom. Sixx this
is a guy who will be used in all. Situations
AND i think, again just a guy who's gonna benefit
from getting some ice time With connor And, leon getting
some hard nosed minutes with guys Like, vasilli Pod coles
and or along With Adam. Henry But i'm going With
ANDREW manjiapani here.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
We mentioned them a couple, times and now we're gonna
pit the new rookies against each. Other Matt Savoy Isaac
coward both were twenty twenty two first round, picks ninth
overall For, savoy thirty first overall For. Howard savoy was
pretty productive last year in THE hl fifty four points
in sixty six. Games howard was acquired in the trade
after not being able to come to terms with The
Tampa Bay, lightning and he won The Hobe baker last
(24:50):
year At Michigan state with fifty two points and thirty seven.
Games for what it's, worth my money is On. Howard
BUT i want to hear your, Take, brett who do you,
think what kind of role do you think each are
going to, have and who will score more point this?
Speaker 5 (25:00):
Year, yeah this might show My edmonton bias a little,
bit Or west The prairie's bias a little. Bit But
i've known i'd been matthews'oy has been somebody that's been
on my radar forever since he was in played a
couple of spot games IN ajhl for The. CRUSADERS i
do think it'll Be Matt savoy because he has that
(25:20):
extra year of pro he's been able to play well
two YEARS i believe, now, wow year and a half
year in a, bit whatever it may, be of pro.
Hockey he played a little bit For buffalo in THE nhl,
too BUT i think he played very well in THE
ahl and when he came up here as, Well like
we've seen him firsthand here In edmonton and his first
(25:41):
couple of, games like he got an assist in his
first game with The Edmonton ey there's nice little cheeky
back pass to the front of the, net behind the
behind the net In gretzky's. Office we've seen. It and
he seemed to have a little bit of chemistry With
Leon drycidle. Already and he's also a guy who wants
to play or has been able to play in all.
Situations when he was down In, bakersfield he's played on
(26:04):
the penalty, kill he's block shots as well on the reverse.
Ike howard has again made it very vocal that he
wants to be a better player and wants to play
in all. Situations his coach At Michigan, STATE i can't
remember his coach's name off the top of my, head
but he was saying That. Ike howard was very vocal and,
active willing and ready to work on the penalty, kill
(26:25):
and he was another guy who was getting, ready getting
in front of. Shots and that's just the defensive stuff
that's going.
Speaker 4 (26:31):
To get you on the. Ice it's gonna be tough
BECAUSE i they will both.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Be on the penalty. Kill they will Both Adam, nightingale thank,
you thank, You. VICTOR i appreciate that that's the coach
From Michigan.
Speaker 4 (26:45):
State but they will both.
Speaker 5 (26:47):
Be on that second power play THAT i think will
get more usage than the second power play has for
The Edmonton oilers in.
Speaker 4 (26:54):
The, past and that's going to be very.
Speaker 5 (26:58):
IMPORTANT i think that's question mark for this team is
how well will that second unit? Play Ah, man this
is a tough pick between the two of. Them i'm
gonna go With savoy just because we've seen him play
in THE nhl. Already he seems to have that comfortability
in pro. Hockey BUT i Think savoy will have more
(27:21):
assists And howard will have more.
Speaker 4 (27:22):
Goals, hey there we. GO i walked myself out of a. Situation.
Speaker 2 (27:27):
There you got us, there all? Right and one more?
Points pick them the silly pod cohleson has come up
a number of times and was the hot thing last.
Year But Trent frederick they traded for him and then
he gave him a little bit of. Money what do
you think of this? Comparison who do you like? Better
between those?
Speaker 5 (27:44):
Two another guy At Silly Pod coles and WHO i.
SAW i used to work In lloydminster and around that,
TIME i BELIEVE i Was bonnieville was hosting The World
JUNIOR A challenge And russia was playing in that tournament
there AND i was able to See Vasilly pod goals,
upfront see the way that he plays and acts as a,
kid AND i just really.
Speaker 4 (28:05):
Fell in love with the.
Speaker 5 (28:06):
GUY i was surprised he went tenth overall BECAUSE i,
think now you see what he's able to. Do he
is not a crazy goal. Scorer he's not a point producing,
guy but he is a hard worker like he is
able to put himself in positions that not a lot
of other people. Want he's That kimon light like he really.
Is and if he's able to our joke At Oiler's
(28:29):
nation is this, summer just shoot a thousand bucks a,
Day just shoot just.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
Hone in that shot and he can score twenty plus
goals in this.
Speaker 5 (28:40):
League the only game that The Edmonton oilers lost That
Vasilly Pod coleson scored in Was game six of The
Stanley Cup. Final that was the only game that The
oilers lost When Vasillipod coleson.
Speaker 4 (28:53):
Scored i'll take that record pretty.
Speaker 5 (28:55):
Well so if he can score more, GOALS i think
The Edmondson oilers are going to win more.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
Games. Now Trent frederick was interesting last. Year he came
in at the. Deadline he had that ankle.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
Injury it may have been worse than Even edmonton initially
thought when they made the. Trade Somehow Max jones became
the most valuable guy in that trade in the regular,
season WHICH i Mean Max jones had a great one.
Game it was fantastic With Trent. Frederick he is a
guy though similar To Matthew savoy in a different sense
(29:30):
that he's been able to do it before in his,
career had multiple multi digit goal. Seasons The Silly Pod
coleson has had issues putting the puck in the, net
especially In vancouver as.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
Well SO i think we just need to See Trent frederick.
Speaker 5 (29:46):
Healthy BUT i think, again The Silly Pod coleson is
going to be putting, better better, opportunities better better spots
where he's gonna be playing With leon drives Titled Leon
loves The Silly pod coles And leon loves playing With
facili Pod, colson because there'd be a lot of, times
especially if you're on the outside looking in and you're
sitting there, going oh, wow, yeah real deep team With
(30:08):
vasilli Pod colesen on your second. Line, hey if you're
second best player and probably the third best player in
the world is sitting there GOING i want to play
with that, Guy you're gonna let that guy play with that.
Guy SO i Think facili Pod colson is gonna get
a lot more opportunities to play in the top, six
produce and contribute specifically at five on, five Then Trent.
(30:30):
Frederick But Trent frederick has that track record of being
able to do it at THE nhl level. Already i'm
gonna might pick. Him will lean towards Pod, colesen BUT
i wouldn't be surprised If Trent frederick surprises more.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
People one guy who will surprise no one because he
has firmly broken Out Evan bouchard over on the blue
line for the second straight. Year he was entrenched as
the top defenseman on the, team scoring third on the,
team third in, shots fourth and points among ALL nhl. Defencemen,
actually with his sixty seven he as mentioned at the,
(31:07):
top The Mighty edmonton power play was kind of more
mid during the season in terms of overall, performance And
bouchard led the unit in. Minutes after one last year
of this bridge, contract he's going to start four years
of star pay this, year the fourth highest defenseman cap
hit in the. League so long with Dry, again this
(31:28):
is another guy who is got the. Paycheck he's going
to be big with this team for a, while locked
comfortably into the. Future and SO i guess my, question
is he an elite franchise defenseman and what do you
see coming up?
Speaker 5 (31:40):
Next, yes he is an elite franchise. Defenseman, now with
that being, said there's a give and take With Evan.
Bouchard you have seen a lot Of evan giveth And
evan taketh. Awayeth he is what you're getting with, him
and it's not always That oh my. Goodness this guy
Like Victor, hedman this guy can shut down a, rush
(32:03):
which you know, what if there is anything defensively THAT
i Think Evan bouchard does the, best it's break up
a rush or an odd man opportunity and stuff like.
That he is weirdly good at those types of. Plays
but you will always see the odd. Giveaway you'll see
this or that or the other thing where you're, like
why did he give up on that or stuff like.
(32:24):
THAT i understand, that but the way that this kid
is able to produce is just. Unbelievable you mentioned the
regular season, stats his playoff. SATs there is only one
defenseman that has been able to outpace him and put
up more points in THE nhl in his, career and
(32:45):
That's bobby freaking War and that's a pretty tough guy
to follow up and be able to be in that
conversation with last year specifically and especially in the playoffs
which will lead into this year as, well he was
that number one guy he is at. Home was injured
from four nations on whatever it may have. Been it
(33:05):
sounded nasty and there was talk that he wouldn't be
able to make it back into The oilers, lineup and
to be, honest that may have messed up The oilers
defensive chemistry because their defense was doing shockingly well in
the playoffs at that. Time but the one constant while
Eck holme was. Gone Was Evan bouchard was able to
(33:26):
cement himself as the number one guy and if he
can start taking that next. Step here we Have Jake,
wellman Which i'm sure we're gonna talk about here coming up.
TOO i think that kind of gives him the stability
to be able to, Go, okay there's this guy behind,
me there's this guy with me who may even end
up playing with me next to me as.
Speaker 4 (33:45):
Well this is a guy who's just.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
Gonna keep taking steps forward if you can stay. Healthy
he is one of the best next To cale mccarr
as an offensive.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
Defenseman there's no question about.
Speaker 6 (33:57):
It with.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
Me i've been a long Time bouchard, truther So i'm
happy to see him. Flourishing, now, well let's move on
to the one of the Newest oiler, Defenseman Jake. Walman
he started the season In San jose and he was
top pair caught power, play putting up through two points
and fifty games fifty two point pace with The. Sharks
after the trade Of Edmonton is power play time, dropped
(34:18):
as you would imagine With bouchard locked in, there he
still managed twenty one minutes per, night producing eight assists
and fifteen games forty four point.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Pace not.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
Bad one of the keys To wallman's value in fantasy
is is bash five point six to block shots and
hits per. Game that ranks him twenty third of all.
Skaters that's pretty incredible and you're getting a high Per
ferle floor. There in the, playoffs he mostly played third
pair With John, klingberg who's no longer there actually now
In San, jose received only forty seconds of power play
(34:45):
time per. Game what kind of role do you Think
walman's going to have in this New edmonton? Team do
you think that maybe he'll be on that second power
play and can he get forty plus points this?
Speaker 4 (34:55):
Season he will one d be my top pick to
be quarterback that second power. Play that shot he has is.
Speaker 5 (35:03):
Unbelievable it is an absolute missile that he's able to
produce off his. STICK i have fallen in love With
Jake woman and this is he is my favorite player
on The Edmonton oilers right. Now The oilers committed absolute highway.
Robbery from the absolute highway robbery that The sharks already
pulled On Steve, eiserman this guy is.
Speaker 4 (35:24):
Unbelievable it's. Funny you mentioned the block shots and the.
Speaker 5 (35:27):
Hits At Oilers, NATION i produced the the pre and
post game show With Aaron, burdado WHO i mentioned, earlier
and we had a little bet going. On it was
a block shot bet and whoever had the most block
shots from this Certain colorado game In january to the
end of the regular, season whoever had the least less block.
(35:48):
Shots between the two players that we, picked someone's gonna
have to get a. Tattoo SO i Picked Ty, eberson
he Picked Brett, koulak and then The oilers Acquired Jake
wollman AND i made this rule because it was losing
at the. TIME i was, Like, hey If Jake wallman's
able to equalize our, guys if he's able to get
up there with, US i think we both get a.
(36:10):
Tattoo Jake walman didn't play the last week of the
season or two weeks of the, season and he's still
finished like four short Of Brett, kulak which would have
saved my. Butt but UNFORTUNATELY i have to get a,
tattoo which will end up being A Jake walman.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
Tattoo this is how MUCH i love this.
Speaker 5 (36:27):
Guy he will be able to go out there and produce,
points whether he's gonna be on that top pairing or
that secondary, pairing BECAUSE i think eventually he will end
up playing on that top, pairing whether that's With bouchard
or whoever it may. Be with his defensive game is
just one of the best The oilers have in their back.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
End on their back end.
Speaker 5 (36:49):
There because he's able to get in those shooting, lanes
get in those passing, lanes break up, shots break up cycle.
Like he's physical and always, able he's always. Moving his
feet are just. Fantastic AND i can go on and
on About Jake, wollman but the big, thing especially fantasy,
wise is that he is going to be put into
(37:09):
a position on a very good team that is going
to help him and let him produce and let him
be the player that's he can be with a bunch
of pieces around, him which is going to help his
point total and his block shots and his hits and.
Everything he is just an absolute diamond in the.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Rough, nice let's cover a couple. More we're gonna pick him.
Up these two. Guys Mattias, ekolm you talked about big
real world, impact maybe a little less on the score,
sheet although we see he certainly does some. Scoring and
then you Got Darnell, nurse who used to be my
favorite in terms of a guy who just got all
(37:51):
the different, stats and certainly he's being well compensated to
continue in his role there In. Edmonton both of them
are a little bit both of them are in the
wrong side of. Thirty that co him a little wronger
side of. Thirty but of these, two who do you
think is going to have the best impact for this
team next?
Speaker 5 (38:08):
Year, Yeah i'm Going darnell, here AND i know that
he's a polarizing name In, edmonton BUT i will say
he is a fantastic, oiler a guy who's always in the.
Speaker 4 (38:18):
Community it just loves he committed to being an, oiler
and for a long Time Edmonton oilers fans were not
able to get.
Speaker 5 (38:26):
That So i'm Leaning Darnell ners, here not because of
that off ice, stuff but BECAUSE i think.
Speaker 4 (38:33):
He's going to step up a lot here this.
Speaker 5 (38:35):
Season Matias ECHOLM i already mentioned that he had that
injury and not.
Speaker 4 (38:40):
Injury he had a big injury.
Speaker 5 (38:42):
Near the tail end of the, season especially after Four.
Nations he was never even really just before for Four
nations as, Well SO i think the big thing For
matias Ech holme heading into this season is how healthy
he will be and how effective he will be as,
well BECAUSE i think there's some projections at this point
in regards to the death chart where maybe he plays
(39:05):
a little bit of the third pairing, minutes maybe we
protect him a little bit and just see how that
hip or whatever it may have been is right. NOW
i Think Darnell nurse is gonna be able to do
more because he Is he will always be that guy
who goes into the dirty, areas follows you into the
corner and makes something, happen whether it's positive or. Negative
(39:27):
again similar to the conversation that we talked to or
talk about With Evan, bouchard but he's able to join the.
Speaker 4 (39:33):
Rush he is a really good.
Speaker 5 (39:34):
Skater one thing to watch for with Darn Ell nurse,
though as, well is those, deep deep, dumpings whether he's
crossed the red line or, not he will dump the
puck in and make sure that his forwards go in and.
Battle he doesn't always carry the puck into the zone very,
well BUT i THINK i still am leaning Towards Darnell
(39:55):
nurse just because of how much he has the. Puck
similar again To Evan, bouchard he will be a guy
who does carry the puck, up will make a pass
and move the puck up however he.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
Can So i'm going With Darnell nurse. Here just, again
you Have. Echomo you're not sure what you're going to
get out of him in regards to his.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
Health all, right let's move over to the. Goalies and
The oilers were ranked eighth and expected goals against for
sixty and conceded the fourteenth ranked actual. Goals according TO
nhl Dot, Com skinner had another up and down, year
playing a little bit above well about even with the
(40:36):
expectations relative his poor defensive. Protection he lost his starting
job in the playoffs after a couple of rough games
In la we know how that, ended and then got
hot Against. Vegas it was really up and. Down there
were some amazing runs and then there were some really struggling. Runs,
frankly this should not be a. Surprise this has Been
Stuart SKINNER'S mo and we've seen flashes of brilliance From.
Bicard we've also seen some real struggles from. Him, Frankly i'm.
(40:59):
Amazed this seems to be the biggest. Achilles he love this,
team and they just seem to refuse to not do
anything about. IT i don't quite understand, That, prett they're
a team ranked fourteenth in terms of actual goals per
games should not be in The Stanley cup Finalists. Flyers
i'm concerned that doesn't really make. Sense of, course we
know why they were because everything else is so, good
but it just seems like this is the most obvious
(41:21):
place for improvement and they don't want to do anything about.
It can you please help us understand if they're going
to maybe mid season or they're going to stick with these,
guys and what we can expect from These edmonton goalies this.
Speaker 4 (41:31):
Year oh, boy.
Speaker 5 (41:33):
GOALTENDING i haven't heard anything about goaltending. Recently what's wrong
with The oilers?
Speaker 4 (41:37):
Goaltending.
Speaker 5 (41:39):
No, so one of the first THINGS i think we'll
talk about with The oilers goaltending is the goalie. Coach
they got new goalie coaches here used to be the
guy In chicago as. Well obviously the have a relationship
With Stan, bowman but also worked with guys Like Corey
crawford near the end of his career as. WELL i
(41:59):
believe if he worked With Scott, darling if we remember
his little spurt for a little bit. TOO i think
he Did Anti. Miami, no that was a little too.
Early there was somebody else that he worked with as.
Well so that's gonna be a big thing for Especially
oilers fans to watch out, for because If Stuart skinner
does not, play it's no longer the goalie coach that
(42:20):
people can blame the goalie. Coaches there's no other market
in THE nhl that will try to crucify a goaltending
coach more than The Edmonton oilers fan, base which is,
insane but that shows how important and religious.
Speaker 4 (42:34):
It is here In Edmonton Stuart.
Speaker 5 (42:36):
Skinner you saw the condensed version of What Stuart skinner
is over an eighty two games.
Speaker 4 (42:42):
Season in those.
Speaker 5 (42:43):
Playoffs you mentioned The La kings games where he just
looked utterly, abysmal and then there'd Be vegas where he
just he would steal game and had that shutout streak
going for a little bit AND i think they didn't
even allow a goal in that series after the goal
that went in with point one seconds left off Of
Leon drycidle. Stick like he's able to become that shutdown.
(43:08):
Guy we've seen, it but it's a matter of how
much how long he can. Sustained it's. Consistency that's a
big thing For Stuart skinner as a. Consistency so my
thing fantasy wise For Stuart skinner, IS i think if
you want, wins if you're in a categories league or
(43:28):
something like that and you just need a, Win Stuart
skinner might be a guy that you look at because
The Edmonton oilers are gonna win games this, year like
he's just gonna end up getting that name edged in
the w column because he happens to be the guy
between the pipes who stop sixteen of twenty two shots
twenty one, SHOTS i.
Speaker 4 (43:49):
Hope not twenty two shots and.
Speaker 5 (43:51):
Somehow still pulled out a win in a six five
seven five. Thriller it's interesting because again you Saw Calvin
pickert and even down the stretch When pickard Ad skinner excuse,
me had his, Concussion Like pickard was able to play
very well and put The oilers in situations to win
games and especially in the, playoffs and he was undefeated
(44:12):
until The Stanley cup. Finals so you see a guy
again who's able to do, it but he just do
you trust? That, AGAIN i don't, know SO i think
for The oilers goaltending, situation it's going to be sit.
Speaker 4 (44:26):
And wait and if we need to make a, move
we will make a.
Speaker 5 (44:30):
Move there's been rumors recently that The Edmonton oilers have
been poking Around detroit and they asked For Trey, augustine
but To detroit, Specifically they're, like, nope, nope cannot Do Trey,
augustine which has then shifted the eyes to a Former
edmonton oil king In Sebastian. Kosa so The Edmonton oilers
have made the, possible made the. Calls they looked At
(44:53):
Michael DiPietro and maybe he comes loose around the training
camp because they got swam. In you Got Corpus salo.
There corpusalo's In, boston right And i'm thinking Of Corpus.
SALO i think so And Michael, DiPietro and you can
only have two goalies out, there SO i think somebody
might shake loose In, boston which maybe you then, go,
(45:14):
okay now's our. CHANCE i just think it'll be something
that happens in Maybe march around the. Deadline if it
does end up, happening but if they steal the show
and are able to be the goaltenders that you expect
them to. BE i wouldn't expect to move at.
Speaker 4 (45:30):
All so it's. Weird it's a. Weird The cree situation
is weird here In.
Speaker 2 (45:34):
Edmonton, brett it's been a good talk on the. Oilers
if people want to continue to follow your work on
your websites or social and ESPECIALLY i cannot overemphasize this,
enough especially photo evidence of Your Jake woman, tattoo how
can they do that in the.
Speaker 4 (45:53):
Future, yeah, personally you can follow.
Speaker 5 (45:56):
Me i'm the real hold in forty on, Everything, Twitter,
instagram Everything Oilers nation as.
Speaker 4 (46:03):
WELL i post a lot On Oilers.
Speaker 5 (46:04):
NATION i will be producing the pre and postgame once,
again the pre and post game show once again On
Oilers nation this. Season and, yeah the tattoo will be
coming soon.
Speaker 4 (46:15):
And i'm sure we're going to be making more stupid
bets on this year's. Show all, right sounds, Good.
Speaker 2 (46:22):
Brett thanks so much for coming on and talking oilers with.
Speaker 4 (46:24):
Us thank you so much for having. ME i enjoyed.
Speaker 6 (46:27):
It.
Speaker 2 (46:34):
Wolf that's good. Fire oh my, goodness long with a cat.
Gram now it's your weekly goalie. Talk But Kat Silverman's
cat's instincts.
Speaker 3 (46:49):
Time once again For cat's instincts Betraying Kat silverman the Gold.
Man we're talking, oilers, goalies and we're gonna do This.
Kat they have goalies and their past assist. Them that
is one thing that we can. Say we're going to
start WITH mL. Bennie he's nineteen years, old sixty three
hundred and eighty seven, pounds drafted sixty fourth overall last
year twenty twenty. Four fortunately his season was injured limited by,
(47:13):
injuries SO i don't know that we really learned a whole.
Lot unfortunately last year in his draft, season he played
in The mestis and he had subpar numbers in thirty seven.
Games this year he played a total of nine games
and a couple seven of them were in THE u
twenty one And lego won In, Messis SO i don't
know that we really learned a whole. Lot he should
be back In mesis at least that, season And i'm
(47:36):
not this. Equivalency there's an Anti rontic comp in, there
but again that's based on limited Information, kat where instincts
tell us about they me and.
Speaker 6 (47:45):
If he's got an Anti ronto, comp he's clearly going
to be A vesna winner and avenge his countryman.
Speaker 3 (47:51):
For all that was.
Speaker 6 (47:52):
Overlooked, NO i think he's a really interesting one to
me because his development cycle has looked really fascinating and
like you, said he's been limited by some. Injuries it's
really hard to get a gauge on just what level
he is at right now because he really seems willing
(48:15):
to play anywhere and do. Anything so he played his
FIRST lega game a full three seasons. Ago in the
twenty twenty two to twenty twenty three, season he played two,
games which at that point he was one of the
youngest players making appearances In. Liga, obviously he has spent
(48:36):
the majority of his. Time during that twenty twenty two
to twenty three, season he played MOSTLY u twenty and
then played those TWO lega, games played The World juniors under.
Eighteen then he ended up playing at the mestiest level almost.
Exclusively the following year he had some international, play although
most of it at the true international level was pressing
(49:00):
for the. Team he was not the starter For, finland
and then last year he once again was willing to
play just about anywhere that there was a chance for
him to get a start when he was, healthy so
he played seven games for THE u twenty. Team he
played one game In, liga it went pretty. Poorly he
played one game In mestus it went. Fine from WHAT
(49:22):
i have, seen it looks like his, game honestly is
kind of Anti ronto, ish where he plays a really,
smart offensive minded goaltending game where he is willing to
direct the play from the net without coming out and
being overly active with puck handling and. Skating he stays
(49:43):
within the blue paint and does a lot with his
angles in his footwork to force the hand of the
shooters that are essentially coming towards. Him and that is
something THAT i would love to see a full sample
size at either THE lega level or once he comes
over To North america to see if that is something
(50:03):
that at his size he is going to be able
to hold because he is not super, small but he
is six, Two so if he is trying to be
too aggressive with how he's dictating things against more talented,
shooters if he is not in prime physical, condition if
there is any lag to his footworker, movement that could
(50:25):
be easy to exploit because if he's at all sluggish
with his lower body, movement it could show his. Hand
SO i don't. Know he's a high, risk high reward
kind of fun player who could be could, Gamble but
not because he is bad per. Se it's because what
he does with his game is either going to be
(50:46):
the greatest thing The oilers have had in a, while
or it's going to be an absolute bust hampered by,
injuries WHICH i think is a really great kind of
goaltender to draft for any, team but The Edmonton, oiler
BECAUSE i don't think that they can afford. That that's
something that maybe The Vancouver canucks could have drafted or
(51:07):
The Carolina. Hurricanes but that's. OKAY i think The oilers
have a vision for what they're doing in, net and
even if the rest of us disagree with, it they don't.
Care so we will see how that. Goes i'd say
he's probably if he is fully healthy this, year three
or four years away FROM nhl, Action but if he's injured,
(51:29):
AGAIN i think we might have to re evaluate that
next year and see if he is truly as good
as he looks like he has the potential to.
Speaker 3 (51:37):
Be All, right let's say about the other, Guy Daniel
salinin nineteen years, old six three hundred and eighty five.
Pounds he was drafted one hundred and ninety first this.
Year in twenty twenty, five his draft season was primarily
spent in THE e TWENTY Sm Sorry finland with stellar.
Numbers he got into Eight messis, games whereas numbers were
also pretty.
Speaker 2 (51:56):
Good he should be.
Speaker 3 (51:57):
At luco next.
Speaker 2 (51:58):
Season In.
Speaker 3 (51:59):
Liga his equivalent season now are pretty, low sixteen percent
average the last two. Years not a whole lot of
nhther comps in, there But Chris masons.
Speaker 4 (52:08):
One so there you.
Speaker 3 (52:09):
Go, now what do your instincts tell us About Daniel.
Speaker 6 (52:11):
SEALIN i would love to see him get loaned to
a slightly more COMPETITIVE lega team or make his way
over To North america in the Next i'd say probably
after this. Year he was, Drafted like you, said he
was drafted pretty, low and he was IN i believe
he was an. Overager so he is at the point
(52:32):
where this year he will turn. Twenty it'll make a
lot of sense this following season to bring him over
To North america if they can help. IT i like his,
game there's nothing super flashy about. IT i think it's
really fun that The oilers have decided that they are
going to only draft finish goalies from here on. OUT
(52:53):
i think that's a bold strategy AND i really hope
it pays off for. Them BUT i do like that
when it comes to style, perspective just because it gives
us two goaltenders who have a similarly kind of offensive
minded method of. Playing you don't see as much of
the high, risk high reward For Daniel, selenin BUT i don't.
(53:16):
KNOW i think he looked fine from WHAT i. SAW
i did not love his. PLAY i didn't hate his.
Play so he is the opposite of their other finish
goalie because if Email vinnie is someone who could be
brilliant or could end up injured every third, GAME i
(53:37):
Think Daniel seleinon is someone who could, play, honestly The
Chris mason. Game that's not a terrible comp there for
WHAT i think he could potentially be for, them someone
who just does a lot of things right without commanding
the play definitively and. DECISIVELY i think he just he
(54:00):
gets the job, done and he is a little bit
faster than the average, goaltender but not by a whole.
Lot SO i do think that's a surprising pick for,
them that they have two that are, probably LIKE i,
said three or four years away FROM Nhl, action maybe.
Five but LIKE i, said The oilers know what they're,
doing even if the rest of us.
Speaker 3 (54:21):
Don't so, awesome thanks for giving us your instincts on

did and Mentioned Oilers. Edition The Oilers prospect system is
not currently the hottest in the, league twenty nine ranked
according to your, System it starts with which no.
Speaker 3 (55:43):
Brainer, yeah this Is Matthew savoy And savoy twenty two
to twenty twenty, two ninth overall. Pick he's still five to.
Nine he's one hundred and seventy nine. Pounds he definitely
did have a GOOD hl season this past one of
his FIRST hl, season fifty four points in sixty six,
Games so that was reassuring after after graduating from THE
(56:06):
whl and not having as dominant a season as you
would have, liked and having a DISAPPOINTING u Twenty World
championship last season where he was expected to do. More
he also he did see four games with The oilers this,
year so that was really. Good but, overall there's some
concerns because you look at HIS fhl player card and
a lot of his play driving metrics are just really.
(56:27):
Poor his bash is really, poor just nineteen. Percent it
doesn't really shoot that much in THE, ahl doesn't, hit
his pems are, low and really you're relying on. Assists
that's his calling. Card his playmaking. Ability is that really
going to? Translate he should be getting looks in THE
nhl this. Season it sounds like some people are already
(56:49):
projecting him into a middle six position with The. Oilers
we'll have to wait and see if that comes to.
Fruition but he's certainly going to get the, opportunity so
you like. That but in terms of IF i have
him ranked as a six point twenty, Five i'm just
not super convinced that he's going to be even above
average roster, player and part of it is his size
and his off puck, Blaze so that remains to be
(57:10):
a concern. Here but let's hear a little bit about
what Makes savoy interesting FROM reverhl SCOUT jessefhl.
Speaker 2 (57:18):
Scout brandon has this to say About. Savoy skating capitalizes
on takeaways and turnovers with acceleration that can push back.
Defenders may not have the top end speed to blaze by,
everyone but enough turbo to respect plenty in the tank
that defenders may regret if he gets a step on.
Him and he relies on gliding in a ready stance
in flow between open spots on the, ice went away
(57:39):
from the play while controlling the. Puck he ensures that
his feet stayed moving and his projected position is ever
changing passing and handling high degree of, puck feel very
comfortable with the puck and any point of the. Blade
an economical puck, carrier he can confidently hold on until
there's an option to move it to an open or
(57:59):
act of. Teammate he confidently approaches board play from a,
flowing spatial puck control perspective as opposed to using his
body as a stationary, shield and he shows confidence and
attempts to make difficult passes through traffic across eyes to
a teammate away from direct pressure. Shooting it's not his
main threat or the one that Savoid brandish most, often
(58:22):
but not something also that opposition should give carte blanche
to because he uses shots and stride and either surprises
the goaltender or creates a rebound with. Them he possesses
high velocity swooping wrist shot that will observe if he
utilized it if more. OFTEN iq, vision both with and
(58:43):
without puck allows him to play more of an opportunistic
role as opposed to being a primary play. Driver the
smallest stature suits his ability to dart into spaces at
the last second be where he needs to be as
the play is. Unfolding the ford checking usually plays the
role of the late or wide supportive spatial. Option will
likely not opt to pressure beyond the hashmarks with much,
(59:06):
aggression but he possesses a dangerous active stick near the
opponent blue line during attempts to carry the puck out
during a zone. Exit for, defense he pressures the point
with an active, stick plays the odds of a spatial
game where he doesn't over commit to the puck. Carrier
he's main role defensively seems to be the passing, lane,
overwatch and break out puck support around the middle of
(59:29):
the depth of his own, zone though he has used
his acceleration to efficiently cover for decoverage blown from others
best at for savoy, flowing opportunistic, creativity and. Capitalization the
biggest concern persistent lack of being the primary driving. Force
top tier potential top six seventy ish points moderate. Bash
(59:50):
that's because or it would happen if his raw skills
and instincts could point to first line potential with the
right chemistry and, composition but a safer ceiling would be
a support role in the top. Six the median outcome
here middle, six but maybe more like thirty ish points
if gains are made in terms of mass and, strength
he could serve as a multi situational option lower in the.
(01:00:12):
Lineup there's a chance the riggers of THE nhl proved
to be too great of an obstacle to overcome stylistic
comparable Micro Joe, thornton with skating and a style closer
To Jeff skinner And Mason Black tidy CHAMPION nhl Rank
king put out a Poll Matthew savoy versus recent Discussye
(01:00:35):
Jonathan Lcarry macki And Lakara macki wins This battle Of
Western canada prospects fifty four to forty six. Victor what
do you?
Speaker 3 (01:00:45):
Think, YEAH i probably would Take Lakara maki. HERE i
think if you had to choose between a smaller playmaker
who lacks physicality and a shooter with off put concerns
but doesn't have size, CONCERNS i Think i'm going with the,
shooter and that's what we have, Here So i'm Taking LAKARA.
MAACKI i still have concerns about both these guys being
(01:01:06):
strong fantasy assets and, contributors BUT i do THINK i
have a little bit more faith ON lakaramacki looking at
the hockey prospecting between the, two So voyd graduated the
model with a lot higher percentage chance of being a
star fifty, percent Where Lakara mackie just had. Six looking
at their profile and what they've contributed since they've had
similarly PRODUCTIVE ahl, seasons BUT i definitely like the odds
(01:01:29):
Of Lakara mackie's transition a little bit. Better even though
there are concerns With Lacara mackie's off puck, play and
looking at HIS fhl player, card you can see that
there's a little bit better play. Driving the bash isn't
necessarily there except the, shots but he does have that great,
shot and if he can improve some of that off pup,
(01:01:51):
play THEN i think he can get. There looking at
some other comps For Matt, Savoy Brian gionta is probably
one of the best, ones also a little guy and
certainly had some average productive. Seasons the goal obviously is
to see If savoy can stick with Dry stiledam, McDavid
and that's obviously the, dream but that hasn't really panned
out for just about, anyone So i'm pretty skeptical that's
(01:02:13):
going to help him too. Much he's going to have
to be able to drive offense on his, own AND
i think that he's going to struggle with. That looking
at some other comps For savoy or, sorry looking at
the J frest card For savoy ten percent chance of
being a, star forty seven percent chance of being in A.
NHLer so still some optimism, there but a little bit
more Pessimistic Jesse.
Speaker 2 (01:02:32):
Victor who is the need to know?
Speaker 3 (01:02:33):
Prospect the need to know is The Yama mariyala and
he is a twenty twenty one fifth round pick by
The sabers who is now in The buffalo, system and
he was nearly a point per game this past season
In liga fifty two points and fifty four, games whereas
(01:02:54):
previously being forty points and sixty. Games that hasn't been
decided where he's going to be this next. Season, hopefully
now that The oilers have signed, him they'll put him
in THE ahl and we'll see what he can do.
There that would be really. Great he'll probably get a
look in training. Camp i'm not sure that he's quite
ready for. That he probably needs SOME hl. Seasoning looking
at HIS fhl player, card there's a lot of red here.
(01:03:15):
Though so even though he had a lot of. Points
his play driving and transition numbers are really not great
and he doesn't bash at. All there's fourteen percentile for
bash including low shots is not something that's. Great you're
hoping mostly for those. Assists we love to see if
he can translate that to THE ahl and then THE.
Nhl but there's for a depth option here and not
(01:03:36):
the best. System he's someone to look. At let's hear
what else we should be looking at With marilla from
our fl Scout.
Speaker 2 (01:03:45):
Jesse the skouting report From brandon On maryala foot working
upright skating pasture allows for mobile ice coverage while. Skating
the play adepty using his edges to it changes up
his angle of attack in line of travel when surveying
the scene for a target to pass. To he's more
of a slippery skater that can fish out in narrow
(01:04:05):
lanes to sneak through instead of making grand explosive. Efforts
in terms of, passing he makes low danger pass attempts by.
Default thui has ability to make cross eye feeds through light.
Traffic he's very confident heads up playmaker demonstrates a willingness
to engage opposition one on one and then open up
passing lanes with one less obstacle in the. Way he
(01:04:28):
is a knack for controlling the play from the left
half wall while pushing defenders back instead of directly engaging.
Them after creating a pocket for, himself he then tends
to draw pressure below the hash marks before dishing the
puck back to the point where extra time and space
has been created for puck movement above the. Circles. Shooting
by nature of a style of, Play marilla is a
(01:04:50):
low volume. Shooter he primarily uses a snapshot with a
slight delay in his. Release the shot is, lethal though
if left unperturbed in the low slot THE Iq mariala
is rather calm and unphased in his. Actions brandon says
he's quite defensively, minded responsible enough to often fill in
for decoverage for. Checking if floating around the opponent's end
(01:05:12):
of the neutral, Zone mariyala will jump up on the
play to activate as the lead for checking pressure just
inside the blue line during a breakout. Attempt if carrying
the puck on the zone entry and requiring the use
of a dump and chase, option he will try to
play the puck to a space on the ice for
a teammate and then follow up as a first string
of support the, Defense mariala often falls back to a
(01:05:35):
very defensive center position and acts as a third d.
Man when facing his zone, entry he will circle down
low below the hash marks in his own zone to
pressure the play toward the boards and try to cause a,
turnover if only. Indirectly the best asset then the, fluid
mobility and calm defensive. Mind the biggest concern physical resilience and.
(01:05:56):
Strength the top tier outcome for this guy bottoms more
of a shutdown role with some penalty killed. Deployment that
is because his natural inclinations to make sure his own
end is covered may curry favor and trust with coaching,
staff but it may limit prime offensive deployment as a
trade off for keeping the puck out of the net
as a prime. Focus the media outcome here depth OPTION
(01:06:20):
hl journeyman or a return venture To. Europe the reduction
in rink, size along with the increase in player size
and speed when jumping into the pro game may take
away some of the comforts that allowed him to find
success on the big ice In, europe and the stylistic
comparable the build and posture are reminiscent Of Elias, peterson
but his overall play style is closer to that of
(01:06:42):
a defensively Responsible Alice. Hempsky Mason black has the Poll
marjala Versus Oscar fisicker Mule guard and Mister Fisker, mouleguard
who also is on the. Rise he's over In, seattle,
however is the winner in this one sixty five to
thirty five percent Victor what do you?
Speaker 3 (01:07:04):
Think, YEAH i think both of these are certainly a
little bit lower in terms of, excitement BUT i THINK
i probably would Take Oscar Fisker. MOLEGARD i liked his
production a little bit more in THE. SHL i think
both these guys have pretty similar. PRODUCTION a lot of
the underlying numbers are not super great for, either BUT
i think they're a little bit better For Oscar Fisker,
(01:07:24):
molegard including His fenwick and net expected. Goals none of
them bash, much and so that's a. Concern BUT i
think he's got a pretty good, shot and he already
had SOME hl, time so we'll have to see what
he can do with. That but both of these are
certainly depth options that you're not as excited. About looking
at the hockey Prospecting between the, two both these guys
(01:07:47):
have pretty much neglible chance of being a. Star Oscar
Fisker molder a little bit, higher but both are sub five.
Percent and looking at some other comps For, Mariala Sergey
brilin is maybe someone he could end up, being like
who is an avit. Producer there aren't a whole lot
of great comps at this level of. Equivalency looking at
the J, freshcar just five percent chance of being a
(01:08:07):
star thirty seven percent chance of being AN nhl are
so pretty low odds there For mariella And.
Speaker 2 (01:08:14):
Victor who is to keep your eye on?
Speaker 3 (01:08:16):
Prospect this Is Quinn. Hudson Quinn hudson was a really
good signing By. EDMONTON i would say he is the
older brother Of cole And Lane. Hudson they also have another,
Brother lars And Quinn. Hudson Unlike lane And cole is a.
Forward he's a five to eleven hundred and seventy pound
right winger and he was AT bu with his has
(01:08:39):
been AT bu since his both of his younger brothers
have played there and he had a really strong season previous.
Seasons was under point per game this past season fifty
points and thirty eight games as they went all the
way to the final before losing To Western. Michigan so
really great season For Quinn. Hudson he didn't actually after,
signing get a couple games in with The, oilers didn't
do too. Much but looking at him HIS fhl player,
(01:09:01):
card you can see That Quinn hudson actually has some
pretty good play driving numbers and some of his transition
game is. Good his passing he attempts a lot of
passes and completes, them gets them to the, slot gets
them into dangerous, areas so really good for the playmaking
and also he can. Finish so there's some excitement here
for a college free. Agent typically with these guys you
(01:09:21):
want to get not too excited about. It they're typically
max out and kind of the forty to fifty point. Range,
well it's nice to have A hudson on your. Team
maybe he can defy the odds like the others. Have
and let's hear a little bit more about what Makes
Quinn hudson special for MY fhl Scout.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
Jesse Quinn hudson's Scott in report is also provided By
Brandon skating near perpetual dynamo who possesses skilled edgework and
high tempo drive gains acceleration through the colonel liver or
curve a linear routes and pivots as opposed to a
heads down linear. Sprint tends to be high, mileage large
(01:09:56):
real estate skater where he uses his varying position on
the ice to give creative pass options to teammates and
to keep away from static. Coverage passing and, Handling hudson
doesn't spend a lot of time with the puck on
his stick because he thrives in and fosters from a
dynamic puck movement. Environment he's able to quickly load the
puck and dish it off to a pre selected, target
(01:10:18):
And hudson seems to use centripetal force to secure the
puck on his blade when maneuvering around obstacles. Shooting like
his puck, handling when it comes to, Shooting hudson likes
to get a shot away before the defender and goaltender
are set and can get a read on his shot.
Attempt more often than, not he tends to be an intentional,
shooter which allows him to add a little extra gusto
(01:10:38):
to the shot he tends not to telegraph a shot
attempt by being quite economical with his preshot, mechanics and
in THE iq, Department, hudson according To, brandon certainly geared
toward an offensive team puck possession. Mindset he's suited to
flow into spaces of the ice where the play is
likely to transform Into this either allows him to be
(01:11:01):
an open target or to pressure a puck. Carrier and
While brandon wouldn't say that he has a panic to his,
game his default tempo may look like over excitement and
impatience at. Times Ford checking tends to be one of
the first forwards on the for, check And hudson is
willing to apply pressure below the goal. Line his weapon
on the foe check is rooted in a, fast shifty
(01:11:23):
pursuit of either the puck carrier directly or a lane
between the carrier and their primary support the. Defense hudson's
defensive responsibilities seem to line in the realm of outlet
support and coverage of the ice between hash. Marks if
things break, down it's rare to see him provide physical
support down low or along the, boards as he's geared
towards taking advantage off the transition rather than causing the,
(01:11:46):
turnover so the best asset. Here hudson's default is a
high tempo game where he can preserve momentum through. Locomotion
the biggest concern he has a penchant for flying that
he's own early if he senses the team is about
to gain puck, control And brandon would like to see
a similar application of his for checking motor to the
defensive side of the. Ice the top tier outcome here
(01:12:09):
middle six energy, roll pesky four checker who can capitalize
of transition rush or cycle thirty to forty points Decent.
Bash while the drive and work ethic are clearly, evident
the well roundedness and high end skill may not be
there nor translated to the pro game to push further
than that up the depth chart and the median outcome
(01:12:29):
part time bottom six and An ahl. Standout the translatability
and room to develop or cause for concern in terms
of professional. APPLICATION a blend Of cogliano And martinook with
far less physicality is the stylistic comparable, here also, grit
but more finesse and agility than the previously named. Two
(01:12:51):
THE nhl Ranking Mason black will stomach no More Edmonton
oiler's prospects getting beat up by prospects and other. Teams,
instead he Places Quinn hudson up Against David Thomas, shek
And hudson comes out handling this one seventy four to
twenty six percent. Victor is This hudson bias or is
(01:13:12):
this a legitimate?
Speaker 3 (01:13:13):
RESULT i probably would Take Quinn. Hudson David Thomas shek
is arguably not a. Prospect he's twenty nine years. Old
he's played in THE shl the past couple, seasons had
really strong, production And edmonton also signed, him so you
know there's some optimism there that maybe he could do something.
TOO i think both these guys are interesting and probably
want to keep them on your watch list in terms
(01:13:35):
of if they get the right, opportunity if they click
in training, camp and if they're good at the beginning
of the, season maybe they can sustain that. Opportunity but
there's a lot of, ifs and maybe he's. THERE i
would probably just stick With. HUDSON i think that he's
a little bit younger and maybe just entering his prime
as opposed to beyond it With Thomas, Sheck SO i
would Take. Hudson looking at hockey prospecting For, hudson there's
(01:13:55):
not really a whole lot of comps that look like.
Him ALEX i follow is probably the best. One not
a whole lot of excitement there for, him and there's
no Different.
