Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Fantasy Hockey Life, presented by fan Tracks. Here's
your source of information and analysis to help you win
your fantasy hockey league. Block off, hats, a step hit on,
stay lock. Here's your host, Jesse souver Here.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
I'm Victor Nunyal Fantasy Hockey Live. Once again, we're here
talking to fantasy hockey. I am Jesse Severe. You know
me and you know that guy. It's Victor Nunial, the
Fantasy Hockey doctor, doctor heal myself. How you doing today?
Speaker 3 (00:38):
I'm going all right, Jesse. Yeah, I might need to
heal myself. I got a little bit of a cold
going on, so that's gonna be fun, but no big deal.
Powering through and just like we're doing with the season
already kind of almost halfway there and really into the
matchups and then to all the good stuff that we're
used to setting the lineup, so enjoying it. How are
you doing, my friend.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
I'm doing good. I'm doing good. And let me tell
you people, Victor's voice may be cracking, but his takes
are razor sharp. They are healthy as can be, and
they're going to be flying today. Yeah. No, man, I'm
doing great. I just got back from a trip to
BC Victor. I went to British Columbia to the Vancouver area.
I gotta tell you, I think it's the epicenter of
(01:21):
the Fantasy Hockey Life universe. And sometime when I go
up there, I'm gonna make like you and try to
meet up with some of the folks. But yeah, first
time up in BC, man, And I know you visited
recently because you wrote about the experience, right.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Yeah, it was a good time. I went up. I've
been up there a few times. Luckily I get to
go there for some teaching. I ended up going to
a Seattle Thunderbirds game instead of a I've been to
a Vancouver Giants game up there.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
That was Oh you were at the Thunderbirds, Okay, okay.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Yeah, I was at the Thunderbirds. I did go to Vancouver,
but I ended up going to a WHL game down
in the States. But yeah, it's a really good time.
The WHL experience is really fun. It's kind of interesting
seeing the different experience in the States versus in Canada.
I think it was I don't know, maybe forty or
fifty dollars cheaper in Canada to go see WATL game.
(02:11):
It was really crazy more expensive in the States. Yeah,
it was really interesting.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I don't know you would think it would be the opposite.
And was it in real money or was it Isn't
it in pretend money that it was forty.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Or fifty dollars. I'm trying to remember how much it
was Canadian. It was substantially less, and then it was
also Canadian, so it's a little bit less as well.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
So this is double whammy, double whammy. All right, I
need to be nice to Canadians. I need to be
really nice to Canadians. Please forgive me for making fun
of your looney Victor. Let's get into the meat man,
let's get into the show. Right after this, we're going
to be talking about some early dynasts. Watch Victor. You
(02:55):
continued to roll through the different teams in the NHL,
and we're putting out polls and we're talking players. Today
it's going to be Utah Mammoth and New York Rangers
to the first segment. We're gonna be talking about some
of the guys maybe you're thinking we can buy. On
second segment, maybe some guys to fade away from. But
Mammoth and Rangers will be intermixed as we go, and
(03:17):
when you're talking Mammoth, you gotta start with Ti Chaginla.
We've talked about him a little bit on recent episodes,
but I don't know that we focused on him. I
think he was like a comparison to somebody. But Tinch
is making up for lost time in that Mammoth system. Remember,
of course, the number six overall pick the son of
Jerome mcginla. But he's having a toward start to the
(03:39):
year in Kelowna in the dub despite playing in only
a minority of the games. Eleven goals, seven assists, eighteen
points in just nine games is great. He was at
press time tops in the league in points per game
he's had a point. Colowna has not necessarily been the
best team this year. He has had a point on
(04:00):
twenty eight point one percent of Kelowna's goals this season,
and the team is not in playofposition, so he is carrying,
but again, he's missed half the games. Centerman with decent sized,
big smarts, Aginla does not look like he's slowed down
significantly from all the time he's missed from injury. Mason Black,
the NHL rank King and tidy overall Lord Stanley Champion
(04:22):
put him up in a pull on X You. The
people voted Tishy Ginler versus Benjamin Kendall the big surprise
up in Pittsburgh this year in Kendall wipes the floor
with at Ginla. Surprisingly to me, sixty six to thirty
four percent. What say you, Victor, I'm disturbed people have
jumped this hard from the Ginla bus over to the Kindling.
(04:43):
What do you think?
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah, I'm a bit surprised too. I think this is
probably a little bit of recency bias. Ben Kendall jumping
straight to the NHL is definitely something I didn't have
on my Bengo card. But it's pretty impressive, and I
think it speaks a lot to his all around game,
which I think has been obviously pretty impressive. You have
to be good two ways in order to do that,
(05:06):
and you look at his underlying numbers in the NHL
that and it shows you, I think why a lot
of his expected goals against and course he against look
really strong. Some of his expected goals for look okay,
but he isn't really cashing in on a lot. That's
why when you look at his production, you certainly in
redraft he's probably someone who maybe you've streamed, but not
going to hold on too because he's only clicking at
(05:29):
a thirty four point pace. I don't know that's going
to change too much. I think he is better all
around than he is in terms of scoring. I think
that will continue. And it's funny. This is what one
of the NHL scouts that I met at the draft
saw this poll online and he actually texted me and
he said, the answers teach agamla. That was it. That
(05:52):
was his comment. I was like, okay, do you want
to expand on that? And he said he's just better
and I said, okay, great, So that's it. Interesting. But
I do think that Tig is probably better in fantasy too,
Like I think he's the kind of guy who has
a little bit more scoring upside. As you mentioned two
points per game in the dub leading everyone. That's just
(06:12):
super impressive, and I do think that TJ has more
scoring upside. I think that if we did this pull
maybe six months ago, it would have been a landslide
for Teach. I think the fact that Kendall is in
this conversation is really good for him. It's really impressive.
But I think ultimately you have to come down on
the upside of Teach, and I did write about in
(06:33):
the article how he's missed a lot of time and
he has a lot to prove. I think he's doing it.
He's doing it right now, and I think your by
low window on Teach AGAINLA is probably closing. But if
you could still buy relatively low, then I probably would
because I think his upside is a lot more. Kendle
is someone who I still feel like he's going to
be in that middle six, like he might be put
(06:54):
in a good position because of his two way responsibility
to get some scoring. But I don't know that he's
ever going to be like a truly elite fantasy asset,
so I think he might hover in that sort of
borderline replacement level. Good for him for making the jump
so soon, and I think that's really boosted his stock.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah, give the Penguins their flowers. Here. The Penguins, even
though they're only seventh in the East if the playoffs
started today, they have a point percentage that is better
than the entire Atlantic Division and everybody but two other
teams in the East, and Kendall is tied for fourth
on the team and goals with a Guinea Malkin and
(07:34):
Brian Rust And I opened my Yahoo app this morning
because I like to see what games are going to
be on tonight. That's just a convenient way. I opened
my Yahoo Sports app and sometimes they put a comment
under a game. In the Penguins game tonight, it said,
is Arturrasilov's an early Calder candidate? I was like, what
the heck has happened? What has gotten into my Yahoo app?
(07:55):
So yeah, but Tijiginla has done absolutely nothing this year
to show that he is not the kind of prospect
that we thought him to be, even though maybe some
of the other guys today will have shown some fade.
Michael Rabble is the next up from the Utah Mammoth,
the giant Zech goalie in his third year at UMass,
(08:16):
who had a masterful twenty twenty five World Juniors sandwiched
in between his last two years at UMass. This year,
it's been a slower start. Nine to eleven, say percentage
over his first nine games. That's a little bit lower
than his first two campaigns there. But back in the
main club, where presumably Rabble will be headed up to someday.
(08:38):
Despite the emergence of Coroll Vamelka. There's always an opportunity
for a solid tendee in an up and coming org
like Utah recently the number thirty eight pick in the draft.
The team is definitely invested in rabble and we're expecting
him to have a role. Mason Black put him up
against Iljan Nabokoff, another goalie on the ride in a
(09:01):
system that has some questions and goal in the long term,
but has a lot of talent. Nabokov was drafted this
following year despite being two years older, and he actually
also was drafted with the number thirty eight pick. He
is he could be the prince who has promised in Colorado.
We don't know he's working away in the KHL. Who
(09:21):
would you rather roster Victor Nabokov or harabl.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Yeah. I think the fact that this is relatively close
makes sense. I do, as most people probably know, favor
the tendees who have pro experience in Nabokov, having won
the Gargain Cup with Metal Eric Magnetic Gorst a couple
of years ago was really impressive. He followed it up
with another strong season last season, though they didn't win,
and he's left a little bit of a slow start
(09:46):
this season, but I just think there's a lot to
be said for facing that pro level competition with the
professional shooters. I think I would lean him, but I
think this is one of those cases where I'd really
like to have both of the these guys. There's some
of these polls we'll get to later where I don't
really want either of them, but in this case, I
would want both of them. And I think that rebel
(10:08):
I certainly has a likelihood of taking over the starter
job at some point in the future, and I would
definitely want a piece of what he has to offer.
He's certainly been even though you said as you said,
trended down a little bit in U mask, He's been
really reliable, great internationally, and I think that he's just
a kind of goalie who projects to be a future
(10:30):
number one, and there's nothing to dissuade us so far.
So all he has left is to play against professionals,
which he most likely will after this season, either in
the AHL or making the jump, probably taking a season
or two in the AHL. So yeah, I like both
these guys, but I favor in the back off a
little bit just because of the pro experience. Although if
you look at the size, if you're scouting based on
(10:51):
a measuring tape, then you would definitely take Krabbel because
he's so much bigger. But as we've talked about with
Kat Silverman, sometimes those big goalies as they move exposed
some unnecessary holes in there in their form, and that's
something that could be an issue for Rabble. But I've
seen that a little bit less with him than some
of the other big goalies. So I think that both
(11:12):
these guys are good, but I would just slightly lean
the back off Jesse.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Yeah, in the category if you had one job, Jesse
and the Bakoff wins that pull fifty two point five
to forty seven point five, and yes, Harabbel's got six
inches on the back off. Next up, our Chim Doudah
is a Utah Mammoth defenseman, a twenty one year old
left shot Russian d man. He's been one of the
most successful of that stack of picks that were taken
(11:39):
at the end of the Arizona era by the club
when they had really stocked up on draft picks. Eight
assists in fourteen AHL games so far this year, and
he's making a case for the role with the big club,
So we'll see if he's able to break into that
once again. Frequent sparring partners Stanislav Sivosol of the Columbus
Blue Jacket. It's chosen by Mason Black as the competition
(12:02):
in the NHL ranking Polsuposal, a staple of the AHL
Cleveland Monsters lineup. Dudah wins sixty four to thirty six
percent in that poll, having come over from Europe to
twenty two year old souposals already in his four season EHL.
Is he a post hype possibility and is Duda's victory
earned here victor?
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Yeah? I would take Duda. I've mentioned him liking him before.
I do think that he has a little bit more
to offer in terms of his his scoring, in terms
of his all round play. I also like that he
only has one AHL season, so he hasn't really I
think sometimes the longer you stick in one league, it's
(12:46):
not necessarily a good sign, especially a developmental league. So
the fact that this Fosal is still there, he may
end up being one of these career tweeners. Maybe he
gets I mean, he got a couple NHL games a
couple of seasons ago, and he may get a little
bit more of that call up here there, but I
don't think he's going to be someone who's going to
necessarily be dependent on. And you can see that his
scoring isn't really progressing either, and he's kind of he's
(13:09):
one of these guys who's just he's fine. He doesn't
necessarily dictate having him on the team or playing a
power play. He's not super offensive. He's just decent defensively.
So I think I would take Duda because he has
a good HL season under his belt. It was reasonable
and so far he's clicking to improve his point scoring,
(13:32):
so maybe there's a little bit more offense there yet
to give. So I like that a little bit. So
we'll see. Right now, the Mammoth have a pretty decent
blue line, so it would be hard for him to
break into, but maybe he can get a call up
at some point. I don't know that he's gonna take
the power play away from Sergachev or Jersey or anyone
who's there, but ultimately it seems like he has a
(13:54):
little bit more scoring upside. I should mention the bash
for these two so far in the AHL haven't been great.
Dude was a little bit better of a basher before,
But right now he's clicking at just twenty seven percent,
whereas fosals at ten percent. So neither of these seem
to bash that much. But Duda used to do a
little bit more, so maybe he can rEFInd some of
that aggression.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Gamp Town Races sing this song all right. Gabe Perro
is next up from the New York Rangers pro at twenty,
already has two World Junior titles, both of which he
had ten points in seven games, each of which, I
should say, two seasons at BC, one of them the
crazy season with Will Smith and Ryan Leonard in Cutter
(14:38):
Gautier and the next of which with James Higgins, and
then he moved on to the AHL. This year. He
is at a point per game in his debut season
in the AHL and his second straight year breaking into
the Rangers lineup. At least some of the time, Stock
has risen in falling during his post draft process. I
think he's been seen as the third of the famous
(14:59):
troika of Smith and Leonard and Perot. At least that's
been my perception. I think he was the last taken
into the three as well. But there's a whole lot
to recommend him here and reflective of the fact that
he's been doing so much at the AHL level this year,
Mason Black puts him up against formidable competition in Shane Wright,
(15:20):
of course, the former number four overall pick, who was
even thought to be potentially a number one overall pick,
and who is established now for the Seattle Kraken a
full timer in their lineup. Who would you rather have
on your fantasy team? The people spoke, A lot of
people spoke, and this one was sixty eight to thirty
nine Shane Wright. So is this about name recognition with
(15:45):
Wright having established himself already in the NHL and Pero
still on the up and come, or is the Shane
Wright comeback in full effect here?
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Victor Well, I'm not sure which way people are leaning
with that, Maybe a little bit of both. I do
think that it might depend a little bit on where
your team is. If you're someone who's trying to be
competitive now, you might favor right. But I always say
this is the issue if you're trying to be competitive
now and your game's played limit is something like it
(16:14):
is in our leagues, like the tidy and Shane writes
at one hundred and fifteen games played and he's producing
at a forty point pace. That's not really helping you
that much. He's getting fourteen minutes a night. He doesn't
have incredible periffs. He's probably a difficult kind of roster.
So I do think there's more upside for him. That's
difficult for him to achieve in Seattle the way that
(16:35):
they deploy their lines. So it might be a while,
might be another one hundred games until he gets there,
and that's going to be really hard to hold on
to if you're a competitive team. If you're a retooling team,
it's probably not a big deal. I do think Right
can still get to that seventy point ish mark, but
he's going to need a lot more time on ice
and more better deployment, better players to play against. Berkeley
(16:57):
Cadden would be nice. I know he's had some time
with him him, but ultimately I think that I would
go with Proro because I think that Pro has more
upside and he was the last of the three taken.
He was taken in the twenties where Smith and Leonard
were taken in the top ten, and we always said
that it was going to take Pro longer because his
(17:17):
foot speed isn't great, his physical engagement isn't there. We
always knew Ryan Leonard was more NHL ready, even though
Smith made the jump a little bit sooner. Smith has
more pure offensive upside. But Proro is just he's so
slick and smart, and we're seeing it already. People have
been doubting him every step he's been setting records and
being the one of the best point geters each league
(17:40):
he joins, and the HL is no different. And we
saw a little bit of this in the NHL when
he made his debut. The assist that he made to
Lafrenier was a classic gay pro under pressure, just slips
the puck between him and the guy pressuring him and
sends Lafrenier on a mini breakaway for the goal. Those
are the kind of slick plays that he makes. He
also hit crossbar and a post. He was dangerous at times,
(18:02):
also overwhelmed and slow at times, which is what we
expect from him. He needs to be in the right situation,
which I'm not sure the Rangers have for him yet.
They're pretty desperate right now and they need to do
everything they can to win, so it's gonna be hard
for him to break in this season, but I think
ultimately he's going to be part of their retool and
a part of big part of the future unless they
(18:23):
trade him. So I think the points upside is so
massive for Proro, I would go with him, but I
wouldn't be upset to have right if my team was
in a situation where I could hold him and not
be frustrated by the lack of production, because I do
think it's going to be a bit still until Shane
Wright really breaks out, because he's gonna need He's in
need the time and opportunity, and Seattle's doing right now
(18:44):
spreading their offense around, and it's just a frustrating place
to roster a player. Are you frustrated when you have
cracking players, Jesse, because I know I am. It just
really bugs me how they spread the offense, the limited
offense around.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
Yeah, the offense is spreading. Their minutes are a little
little more teered out than they used to be. Veniers
and Stevenson are well over twenty minutes, everly about at twenty.
Then you got Schwartz and McCann sitting around seventeen, Marchmen
around seventeen, and then you drop down to fifteen and
fourteen for the next line that includes sheen Wright the
next set of players. So it's not quite as stupid
(19:19):
seventeen thirty for everybody as it was under the previous regime,
but it still is still as tricky there, and it
doesn't help that the team isn't exactly burning it up
putting up points anyway this year. That could help a
Sheene or something who's only at about half point per game.
And I will say, Victor, I got to ask, man,
I'm looking at this hockey prospecting model, Gabe Perro's comps
(19:44):
for draft year. Oh no, big deal, Yarmiriagar, Pavel Burray
in that list, Victor, what the holy heck is that
all about.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
I do think gay pro has massive point per game
plus upside. He's the kind of guy I do think.
In many ways he's not the same player, but I
think that he has the points upside of a Panera.
He's an incredible distributor. He's super smart, super crafty. He's
not the fastest guy, but if he has the right
complimentary players, he could do something like that. I don't
(20:14):
know if he's gonna get that right opportunity. It might
take him a while, but every step of the way.
He's been doubted and he's proved everyone wrong. Yeah. I
think if you can hold pro and wait for that
right opportunity, then you could certainly be rewarded. I think
the upside is still massive with him.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Nice Nice Moving on to another New York Rangers, Scott Morrow.
The Rangers are not shy about drafting defenseman. By the way,
in the last three years, four of their six top
three round picks had been on the back end. Further
down the funnel, Tomorrow, who's drafted before that time frame,
to be fair, acquired with a first and a second
(20:52):
for ca Andre Miller, so he wasn't even a Rangers
draft pick, but he was part of that return for
Caendrey Miller from the Hurricanes in the offseason. The three
year college player is on his second year splitting duty
now between the AHL and NHL. The offense has been
a lot slower to materialize in Hartford than it was
previously for the Chicago Wolves. Marl's got decent size and
(21:14):
reported speed. Does he have that fantasy game that we crave?
Victor and the NHL ranking poll puts him up against
David e're acheck, who we've talked about a little bit
recent on the show, who also is similarly off to
slow starts at for the Iowa Wild Although your Check's
also gotten some games at the NHL level this year
(21:35):
and was obviously a much earlier draft pick one year
later than Marrow. But Marrow up against your Check in
the poll. Apparently your Check has burned more people because
Marrow wins this thing sixty to forty percent. Not sure
where you stand on this one, Victor, what do you say?
Speaker 3 (21:54):
Yeah, isn't it funny? This is why I always laugh
when people when you make dynasty trades. If you would
have made this trade during the draft season or during
Yeah twenty twenty two, people would have laughed at you.
They would have called you such an idiot, right like,
how could you give up David Hurrichik for Scott Morrow.
Give it a couple of years, and we've seen the
trajectory of these two kind of like ships passing in
(22:16):
the night, completely opposite, right, Like we have seen moro
As send dramatically to be this valuable commodity to this
really solid player, someone that is desirable by the Rangers.
And you're moving around from Keandra Miller. You better be
getting a great piece back. You better be getting a
solid defenseman back, and that's what they got, and your
(22:37):
check has been the opposite. Right, He's had this huge hype.
I've definitely really liked him, but he has really struggled.
This is something that we talked about in the beginning
that his skating might be an issue because he struggles
to pivot. He struggles to keep up with some of
the pace, especially some of the stronger players, faster players,
and we continue to see that he continues to get
(23:00):
turned around a bit. Right now, he is doing okay
in Iowa in terms of his play driving looks really good.
He's not scoring a lot. He only had seven points
in twenty seven games last season. He has one assistant
one game this year. He has been trying to make
it in the NHL team, but it hasn't really worked
(23:20):
out so well for him in terms of his limited
action right now. So it's a really difficult situation for him.
His play driving in the NHL has been pretty awful.
He's been getting carved in. You look at his expected
goals against in course he against, his numbers are pretty
awful and when you watch the games, like he looks
(23:41):
really good at times, his physical and then he'll just
get absolutely turned around and someone will blow by him.
And that's the kind of thing that you can't have.
And so it's a really sad situation, I think for
your check because he's someone I really had a lot
of faith in. But I would definitely have to go
Moro in this case, which is which pains me to say,
but it's true, Like I would definitely rather have Moro
(24:02):
right now and Beck as someone who I'm not even
I'm not sure if he can even salvage his career
at this point. Like I think it's going to be
really tricky. He has to really work on that skating
and he has a lot that he could offer, and
I think if we reset his expectations to be a
serviceable lower pairing guy with some physicality and a good shot,
I think he could probably do that. But I don't
(24:23):
think he's going to be that top defender, power play
guy score that we thought once he could be. So
maybe reframe our expectations. But I definitely agree with the
people here Jesse, we got to go Moro now.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Wow again the hockey prospecting model, Man, you're a check
even after everything last year, after all the failures, his
star probability was still a forty percent in his full
comps for his developmental five year from D minus one
to D three. I guess it would have been through
D two. I don't know if it's changed this year.
(25:00):
Charlie McAvoy and Adam Fox are both on that list,
along with busts and developing players. But so I don't know.
Something is still driving that model. But the trajectory is wrong.
And if if what you're talking about with the scouting
side of things and the flaws in his game, you
know that might not be coming out in the numbers yet,
but it may represent a ceiling. Next up, Darren Dylan
(25:23):
Grant of the New York Rangers. Now we're back on
the goalie tip, and a couple of years ago, I
know I seized on him as a goalie developing in
the miners who was just showing good numbers, and so
I grabbed him in some dynasty leagues and I've not
been disappointed with that. Meanwhile, the problem with him is
he continues to sit with elite goaltending in front of him.
(25:44):
With the Rangers, just Jerkin and now even Jonathan Quick
is too frisky getting in fights and having good games
for the Rangers, even if the Rangers aren't having great
games in front of him. The twenty twenty draft has
been performing reasonably well in Hartford for several year years now.
He's short for a goalie, which is a problem, and
he's teased my fantasy teams because every once in like
(26:06):
the little green flag on him has disappeared in my
league because he gets called up and I'm like, whoa,
the season's open, but he's just sitting on the bench
because somebody else is hurt and he needs to fill in.
He hadn't played yet. This is already, he's already gone
through his entry level contract. He's already on a restrictive
free agency two way deal in his first year on
(26:27):
that are a one year deal. I should say that
he's signed at this point. But twenty three year old
goalie that's still being a baby and Eric Portillo is
his competition. Portillo drafted one year earlier by the La Kings,
who maybe the goalie situation is not quite as certain
for the long team for the Kings, even though Darcy
(26:47):
Kemper's given them good goalie time, Portillo wins this competition
significantly seventy five to twenty five over Dylan Grant, he
was drafted a bit later. Are the people correct here,
or which one of these guys is more likely to
break through victor.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
This is one of those cases where the answer might
be neither. But I think that they're both. They're both fine,
They're both in that same stage. I think Mason does
a good job of picking picking people are similar, and
they're both in that where we could break in at
any moment right or we could actually just get passed
over and the next guy could take over. I think
(27:24):
that there's less competition for Grand's job. Portillo, he's been
there for a long time. He's twenty five, he's been
in the HL for a while. They have some other
options in terms of their goalies right now. I don't
know how long Darcy Kemper's gonna play, maybe until he's forty,
but he's looking pretty good right now at thirty five.
And they got Forrestburg and Copley, And I think the
(27:47):
thing about the thing about Portillo is I do think
that Carter George will probably pass him at some point,
and I'm not sure that Portillo will ever be the guy.
Maybe he'll be someone who's interesting, but watch him play.
He's huge and he takes up a lot of net
that way, but I don't know that he's the most technical.
He leaves a lot to be desired in terms of
(28:08):
his movements and reads, but he's gonna get tons of
opportunity just because he's a giant, and Grand is the
opposite in that he's very mobile, he's very good on
his edges, and he reads a place to bring he
has to because he's very small. I think the Rangers
situation is a little bit they have more options. I
(28:29):
don't think they necessarily have better options, though, so I
do think he's the best option of the guys that
they have on the lower end. So I guess I
would favor the Grand option over Portillo just in terms
of the system and like the opportunity. I think Grand
has proven a little bit more. But I also, like
you said, there's no there's going to be no space
(28:51):
for him with the Egorsh Stirkin. I do think that eventually,
with Jonathan Quick eventually losing to father time is gonna
let Gran have a little bit of time as a backup,
and I think he could fill that role really well.
I think it could be a serviceable backup, but I
think when the time comes to be a starter, I
(29:13):
don't think it's gonna be Grand, So he might just
be a backup. Maybe he goes somewhere else to try
to find his game, but I don't think that anyone's
ever gonna really be relying on him. So both these
guys are probably guys that you don't necessarily put too
much stock in. But I do think that Grand has
a better opportunity to be the guy and someone that
gets a decent number of starts instead of Portillo. So
(29:36):
I would lean that way, which is not what the
people said. Jesse. Surprisingly.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Yeah, Jonathan quick Man, we get I gave up on
him years ago, and everybody meets by the time. Eventually,
I think Jonathan quick will fight him. Next up, Victor,
we're gonna take a break, come back and talk some more.
(30:05):
We're back from break. Factor. You've got some things you
might like to share with the people. I'm going to
clear out and give you the stage.

Hockey Life at gmail dot com. Sell candidate's victor. We
gave you all the good news. Now we're gonna give
you some of the a little bit maybe time to
get out from underneath news. And it's gonna start with
Daniel Boot winned out be a really large human, is
(31:26):
what I've always said. And Daniel Boot is definitely one
of those great with six' seven something like, that another
of those Late arizona era first rounders before they became
The Hockey club in The mammoth And boot spent two
years of full TIME khl, duty moved over TO Hl
tucson and has been hot so far this. Year seven,
(31:49):
goals six, assists thirteen points at press time in fourteen.
Games and they say he's no. Stuff he's, great, big
but he also has some game to his game and
he's not just a big meathead out. There so the
reviews have been. Good as he settles Into North. America
we Put Daniel boot in THE nhl ranking poll up
(32:09):
Against Maverick bork of The Dallas. Stars that's, competition Although
bork hasn't quite been the point producer in THE nhl
THAT i would have hoped at this, point And Daniel
boot is out ahead Of bork sixty to forty. Percent
since we're talking about him in this part of the, Show,
victor it sounds like you might not be convinced by The.
Boot but what's the, Word.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
YEAH i might want to give him the, boot, Right,
yeah you knew that was, coming so. Yeah And i'm
not the biggest fan Of Daniel, boot mainly BECAUSE i
just think that he's not going to be that big
of a. Scorer right, now he is scoring a fair
amount and THE, hl as you, reference that's pretty. Unusual
it's something he hasn't really done so. Far but right
(32:55):
now he has five goals on thirty nine. Shots do
some quick, math so he's shooting a reasonable thirteen. Percent
that's not too, bad but that's more than what he
has been shooting in his career up to till this.
Point he's never really been a big scorer in THE
khl or even that much in THE mhl when he was,
(33:15):
There so right now it's great to see what he's
doing in THE. Ahl i'm just not sure THAT i
fully believe. It although on the other, Hand Maverick pork
has been a little underwhelming in terms of his time
with THE nhl. Team he was a great scorer in THE,
ahl but hasn't really translated. It but that's also probably
(33:39):
because the team is so good and they're using him
more in a depth. Row they have so many offensive
weapons In dallas that they don't really need to feature,
him and he's only at ninety five games played As Maverick,
pork SO i still think there's a lot more offensive
upside there With, pork and he's WHO i would. Choose
BUT i think it's not unreasonable to Pick boot in
terms of what he has to. Offer he's a little
(33:59):
bit more or, unknown so you could kick that decision
down the line a little bit and, say let's take
the unknown commodity and see what he can. Produce what's
a little frustrating About boot is that he's this giant,
guy but he doesn't really use his physicality that. Much
his bash is only at forty seven, percent so he
doesn't really he doesn't really hit at. All his bash
is almost entirely from his blocks and, shots which is.
(34:22):
Interesting reminds me a little bit Of Alexi, protest who
uses his body to shield and protect the puck and
not so much to impose physical harm on. Others so
there may be a little bit of that With. Boot,
Certainly boot is going to get all the opportunity with the,
size the pedigree of the being a high draft, pick
SO i don't think you can necessarily go wrong. THERE
(34:43):
i Think it depends on what stage your team is.
In LIKE i was saying With Shane, wright if you're
a competitive team and you're Rostering maverick work and you
have AN nhl games played limited around one hundred and
he's at ninety, five you're going to be pulling your
hair out and wondering what to do with, him and
you might end up having to drop him or trade
him to someone. Else so if you're a rebuilding, TEAM
(35:03):
i would take this trade AND i would sit on
him for a season or two and see if you
can get up to that potential that we think he.
Can but if you're a competitive, team you might want
to move on and take The neil Board dtill boot
in this.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Situation next, up we've Got dimitri. Simashev, listener there's good
news and bad. News i'm going to give you both.
Here it's predominantly bad. News we'll start with that he
was most recently the number six overall, pick or we was.
Recently he's all the way up to THE nhl at
only twenty years. Old maybe this is the good news right,
(35:36):
now but the bad news is it's not really going
that well on the. Surface no points in nineteen games FOR.
Utah one, shot one, block one pmper. Game that's about
it as far as what's. Happening and he's getting sixteen
minutes a. Night he has the worst goals about replacement
on the team by a, lot particularly on the offensive,
(35:58):
end where he's almost got twice the negative gar of
any other player ON utah this. Year and you might
think he's probably being saddled with some dumb partner who
is difficult to score. With, no he's skating almost entirely
With Mkil sergachev this. Year keep in mind, now, though For,
(36:18):
simachev if you want to be, optimistic he's a twenty year.
Old he was skating about ten minutes of ice time
in THE khl Last. May they brought him straight to THE.
Nhl that's his first time In North. America nothing in,
between and he's out there skating sixteen minutes a night
With Mikhail, sergachef as we, said more than he was
skating in THE. Khl so you would, expect if nothing,
(36:41):
else some growing pains and UTADD i don't. Know they
seem like a pretty smarter. Runner they must have an
idea of what they're doing. Here i've been listening enough
of the coverage to see what they're saying about. Him
but it can't be it can't be. Great at this,
point we're gonna put him up Against Henry, brustavitch who
was the younger brother of this, group who's A London
(37:04):
night and he actually does not win this. Poll simyshev
may be based on the fact that he has was
drafted so much higher Than brustevich and has already debuted
in THE. Nhl i'll be two years. Older win's this
competition sixty three to thirty seven. Percent only one of
these two is in THE nhl already and on a fun.
(37:24):
Team are these growing? Pains or should we believe that
If simashev has never scored at any, level keep that in,
mind he's probably a defensive defenseman, anyway that we probably
shouldn't Expect simachev to start scoring sometime in the future
in THE. Nhl, victor what do you think?
Speaker 3 (37:39):
Here, yeah it's this is WHAT i said About simashev
during the draft, Season like he doesn't really, Score he just.
Doesn't what are you getting from? Him, yes he's in THE.
Nhl we all do. That like his size is skating his,
mobility his, reads like. A he's a pretty good actual
defense spend some of the early returns that you. Mentioned,
(38:02):
notwithstanding he's playing top pair on a COMPETITIVE nhl team
early in his. Career that is pretty. Impressive and kidos to,
him AND i think that's all. Great he's just under
he's twenty right, now playing decent number of, minutes and
it's just this is what he's gonna. Be he's gonna
have not great, periffs not score a, lot but play
(38:25):
a decent amount of. MINUTES i was singing who he
reminds me. Of he reminds me Of Brandon, carlow a
guy who plays a. Lot he gets a decent amount of,
minutes but he's just not in most, leagues not really
rosterable because he doesn't really get a lot of. Priffs
he doesn't really, score but he's out there a, lot
and you're just like that meme with the, stick like poking.
It do something like what are you gonna? Do you're out,
(38:47):
there come, on do, Something BUT i don't think it's gonna.
Happen SO i think that's What simachev is gonna. Be
this is one of those situations where you could Keep
simyshev and maybe you can trade him for more just
based on name value or based on the fact that
he's in THE, nhl BECAUSE i don't think any of
those things are guaranteed For Henry. Brustevics but are you
(39:09):
really going to be happy rostering? Him is he gonna
help your? TEAM i don't think. So maybe you can
just wait until you can get something decent For. Simachev
maybe he goes on a bit of a hot, run
maybe he gets a couple of secondary assists in a,
row and maybe you can convince someone that's going to.
Continue that's the WAY i would look at. It proustevis
he's the younger brother Of, hunter AND i think he
(39:32):
he's a little bit, bigger so you could say that he's,
taller AND i think maybe he has a little bit
more more offense or similar offensive. UPSIDE i don't know
about more offensive, upside but. SIMILAR i think he's probably
a little bit better defensively, though and his, brother and
his brother was sometimes needed to be reeled in quite
a bit and struggled at the defensive. End BUT i
(39:55):
don't know that he's going to be someone that's going
to be really necessarily so one that is gonna command
power play time or have a significant role in the.
Team SO i think that IF i was just banking
on pure, UPSIDE i would Take. Prustevis BUT i think
just based on asset, MANAGEMENT i think you've got to
take some. Michef you got to take the player who's
(40:15):
in THE, nhl and then maybe you can parlay him
into a different asset move on from him when the
time is. Right BUT i don't think either of these
guys are going to be super helpful to your actual.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
Team, Jesse, yeah, Yeah and that's the. Thing these guys
probably will have good impact on your ACTUAL nhl clubs
if you have them ultimately when they're when they've. Developed but,
yeah probably not fantasy friendly. Games And i'm particularly discouraged
not to see periffs worth anything out Of buschev yet
(40:47):
in the. Minors and by the, way what the deal
Will Hunter Brucetevitch and maybe when if The Calgary flames
start to, sell if then he'll get more of a
role up. There next Up victor another of these defensemen
over on The Utah. Mammoth While simashev has RECEIVED nhl
minutes this, Year Maverick lamoureau has not yet he did
(41:10):
last year and he actually had positive goals above replacement
and even strength offense and even strength defense with the big.
Club both of these guys are big. Fellas maverick is
back IN Hl tucson this year and has six assists
in fourteen. Games that's reasonable production for AN ehl, defenseman
not necessarily one who's knocking down the. Door he's one
(41:33):
year older Than simyshev and basically they still got him
simmering down. There So Maverick lamoureau goes up Against Owen,
pickering another guy who's received a cup of coffee as a,
defenseman and is he gonna come up and is he
gonna play a? Role and they were both drafted late
in the first round in twenty twenty. Two what's the
deal gonna be with this? Guy But Owen, pickering even
(41:54):
though he seems to be in a position where there
would be even a thinner defensive team in front of,
him loses this. One lamara wins fifty nine to forty one.
Percent so similarities, Here but which one do you have
A Maverick lamara Or Owen pickering Pictor, yeah this.
Speaker 3 (42:13):
Is definitely one of those situations Where i'm not super
excited about either of, them quite, frankly BUT i do
think THAT i would probably Take lamara just because he
has quite a bit more. Bash i'm looking at HIS
ahl player card For Fantasy Hockey life and he has
eighty two percent. Bash most of that driven by his
blocks and, hits which are both in the eightieth, percentile
(42:35):
which you love to. See so not the biggest, shooter
but that's. Okay you don't need your defenseman to shoot that,
much but he. Is he does struggle a little bit
with the pace of play and some of the, skating
but being a big dude and being, physical he's going
to get all the opportunity in the. World oh he also,
pims if you like that sort of. Thing so he
is going to be a pretty pretty good peripherals. Guy
(42:55):
he might struggle a little bit with some of the
all around, play which is pretty much the opposite Of.
Pickering pickering is going to be a much much better
real life. PLAYER i think he's someone who skates really,
well he reads a play really, Well he's always in.
There he's not someone who drives offense necessarily particularly. Well
but he is going to be a little bit better
(43:19):
in that, SENSE i. Think but he doesn't really. Bash
his bash is a thirtieth, percentile and that's mostly his.
Shots he doesn't really block or hit that. Much you're
not really going to get that much. OFFENSE i don't
think From. Pickering he was a little bit more offensive in,
junior but he's settled into a better two way. Guy
SO i think for YOUR nhl team you probably Want,
pickering but for your Fantasy Maverick. Lamoreau but don't Expect
(43:42):
lamro to start, scoring BECAUSE i don't think that's going
to be the case for. Him but you can expect
some decent. Priffs if that's all you're hoping, for THEN
i think you'll be. Okay, otherwise for, scoring you probably
want to look. Elsewhere from these Two.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
Malcolm spence jumping back over to A New York ranger
prospect and a left winger and a decent sized. One
spence has taken that nil, cash having sailed Down Scenic
Lake erie from a Downtrodden Eerie otters club from last
year to The university Of. Michigan after a nice start
against some of the lesser lights of THE ncaa and
(44:17):
the sort of the preseason pre conference season where he
put up like seven points right. Away he's got just
one goal in his last eight games against the stiffer
competition in. Season not too surprising of a transition of
a guy who's moving from a more STRUGGLING ohl team
up to THE ncaa playing against, bigger older, kids and, also,
(44:41):
yeah just moving into. That and also he has that
designation of two way forward that Makes victor AND i
wins and put our hands up to our foreheads Like Captain,
picard because it's usually not a positive sign for fantasy,
value even though it's the sort of thing THAT nhl
team's crave and is going to get them valued BY nhl.
(45:01):
Teams in THE nhl ranking, Poll spence is up Against Joshua,
waugh who we've talked about in recent, episodes while The Laval,
rocket who is he's had some good. Time he's had
some good production, already and so there would seem to
be some more optimism even though he was picked, later
much later in the draft a fifth, rounder And spence
(45:24):
was drafted forty three year, old forty three overall just last.
Year Malcolm spence must have the juice from moving up
To michigan and having what seems to be an impressive point,
total even though it's faded with tougher. Competition spence wins
this competition sixty eight to thirty two, percent again while
(45:46):
little respect for. Him Is spence your favorite of these?
Two you got him in the cell, category so there
must be something you don't like as.
Speaker 3 (45:53):
MUCH i think buying and selling depends on what you can, get, always,
Right SO i think if you can get a lot From,
SPENCE i think that it may make. Sense if you're
not getting a lot of good, interest then you might
as well just keep. HIM i do think that he
has some decent. Upside he is a really, interesting solid actual.
(46:14):
Player the question is how much of that offense is
going to, Translate and that's the part That i'm just
not sure. ABOUT i think he might end up just
being a good middle six. Guy But spence has terrific,
bash so you know he's going to be the kind
of guy that won't be too hard to hold because
he'll give you a solid peripheral. Floor but how much
points is he going to get? YOU i don't know
(46:35):
that he's ever going to be more than a fifty
five ish point guy with good. Bash is that? Valuable?
Yeah pretty? Valuable wall still has a lot more scoring,
upside but he has really struggled to make a permanent
case to be in THE. Nhl right, now as we're recording,
this he is in THE, nhl and The canadians have
just been way better THAN i think a lot of people.
(46:55):
Thought the emergence of the trade Of Zach, bulduke the
emergence Of Oliver Cappanan demodov coming over earlier than. EXPECTED
i think a lot of those spots just got taken
up For, joshua and now he's sittling on the third,
line which is not necessarily where he should. Be he's
more of a, scorer so he really should be in
the top, six but there's just not space for. Him
(47:16):
he's not pushing any of those other guys out without
the best. Opportunity it's going to be a bit of
a struggle for. HIM i still believe in what and
my answer here depends on where your team. Is if
you're a team that's like a lot of my teams
are competing right. Now If i'm a competitive team AND
i want to flex that guy in and have a
guy who's close to BEING nhl, ready Then i'm going
to Take. Joshua but If i'm a little bit more
(47:37):
of a rebuilding, state AND i don't mind. Waiting THEN
i would probably Take Malcolm spence here and just wait
on that asset for to. Develop SO i think it
depends a little bit about where your team, is because
that's going to affect how patient you can. Be so
that would be my, Answer.
Speaker 2 (47:52):
Jesse All, right prospect who is getting close to being
in the remember some guys Category Brandon barsson of The
New York rangers last year When vegas needed to bring
misfit original Misfit Riley smith. Back i'm pretty. Convinced george
McPhee called down to The hockey ops department and, says
(48:13):
do we still have a prospect down? There is there
a prospect that we still? Have and somebody, said we
Got Brendan. BARSON i, guess and it, says, okay we're
sending him To New. York it's his fifth year in THE,
ahl after his time In michigan when he was, REALLY i,
think a well regarded prospect on a pretty Solid michigan
team back when that was really, happened back When michigan
(48:35):
was a super team and he had cups of coffee
with The Golden knights a few years, back but he's
really been stalled out in THE ahl for a, while
and it's starting At. HARTFORD hl team From, henderson where
he had been playing For, vegas has been slow this,
year only three points in fifteen, games So, berson he's
a little bit stalled. Out HIS nhl equivalency is on the,
(48:58):
decline And Mesa black put him up Against william to
four of the of The Colorado, avalanche who, RECENTLY i
think previously was A New York, islander and the poll
here has come out With Brander bossan ahead sixty three
to thirty seven. Percent looks like a big shrug to, Me.
Victor we didn't even get as many votes as we
(49:20):
normally do on these. Things which one of these guys
has the? Potential and DID i in fact reverse which
team to four is on at this? Point because why
WOULD i pay.
Speaker 3 (49:29):
Attention i've known you for long enough to know THAT
i can't answer, that But i'm sure that you did, Not.
JESSE i think this whole, thing as you encapsulated as
a big shoulder. SHRUG i don't think either of these
guys are super. Interesting in, fact the color Of avalanche
after acquiring him and the Brock nelson trade basically shrugged
their shoulders and, said we don't want to even Qualify
(49:51):
william to. Four so the twenty twenty fifth round pick
by The islanders is not part of any organization right.
Now as far as we can, tell he is playing
in THE khl. Currently he played a little bit in
The Quebec National. League it sounds like he might be
getting a tryout in THE ahl with The penguins, organization
(50:12):
so maybe there's some possibility of him. Resurfacing he's a big,
guy he doesn't skate particularly well and so there's definitely some.
Concerns i've always had some concerns with the four long,
term but maybe he can maybe he can turn things
around a. Bit i'm not very confident in. That he
does have some decent bash if you're into that kind of,
(50:34):
thing if he can figure out the rest of his.
Game And, brisson for his, PART i guess between the,
two one of them is actually playing for AN nhl
club in THE, ahl SO i GUESS i would take.
Him he hasn't really he's progressed in THE ahl since
having a pretty good. Season the first full season he
had in THE hl was first couple was pretty, good
(50:55):
and then he progressed a little, bit probably the kind
of thing where he was frustrated and get AN nhl
opportunity or get as much, opportunity and he's been languishing
in THE ahl ever. Since but that's the thing is
that in HIS nhl time he hasn't really ever been very.
Impressive he's an offensive forward who isn't that great. Offensively
(51:15):
his shot that was really good in the junior ranks
hasn't really, translated and he doesn't really do too much
else to make him. VALUABLE i remember at the Time
vegas Had brisson And Alex, holtz WHICH i said were
like the same type of. Player they even had him
on the same line at one, point AND i was,
LIKE i don't understand that at, all because those two
are just waiting for someone to pass them to puck
(51:37):
and shoot, it and so you can't have two guys
on the same line doing, that which is ultimately what they,
realized and they moved on From. Berson SO i Guess
i'll Take, berysson BUT i Think JESSE i talked way
too much about a comparable that's not that.
Speaker 2 (51:48):
Interesting HOW i don't feel so bad not being confused
about where de four, was because that explains why we've
heard so little from. Him victor we. HAVE i believe
this is our last one to, do and that IS.
Speaker 1 (52:03):
Ej.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
Emery he's another defenseman for The New York. Rangers A,
SURREY bc. Native shout Out. SURREY i just just visitor to,
you AS i, said who has been grinding his way
to the. Top four years at The university Of North.
Dakota he has continued his game as a defensive. Defenseman
he's apparently the son of A cfl football. Player that's.
(52:25):
Series it's a very diverse. Talent there's a lot of
people coming in from different backgrounds and it's a, growing booming.
Community at press, Time emery is still he's still finding
his feet a little bit this. Year he's got two
goals and two assists for four points in eleven games
so far this. Year can't, defenseman, people. Defenseman it's a
lot better than last year when he played thirty one
(52:47):
games and at one point his. Equivalence he's getting a
little bit. Better BUT i don't know That emory is
supposed to have the best offensive game here and in
the poll we put him up Against Jack thompson WHO
i Think jack tom is a guy who you've been
a little bit more positive about in the. Past and
it's a dead even poll fifty to fifty between E
J emery And Jack, thompson one of those defensive baby
(53:10):
sharks up In San. Jose who do you like Between
thompson And Emory and what do you think of the
young Man.
Speaker 3 (53:17):
EMORY i Think emory is an awesome real life. Defenseman
he's gonna be the kind of guy you want to
help stabilize your pay your. Pairing it's interesting they Picked
Braanden sneider a couple of years, ago AND i think e.
J emory is. Similar great, skater, physical he will he'll
hit you a. Lot he's eighty seven percentile for, hits
doesn't really block as, much but his shots and blot
(53:40):
and hits are gonna make his bash pretty. Significant so
good real life defenseman has some, bash not really gonna.
SCORE i don't think either one of these guys are
going to. Score we Saw Jack thompson get a little
bit of power play when they had literally no other
options In San, jose and now they have a few other,
options including the parent superstar dem. TOO i don't know
(54:01):
if you realize, That, jesse but he's apparently pretty offensively.
Gifted according to The, Sharks i'm being. Sarcastic they don't
really have a lot of good options, now but they
do have better. Options and we See Jack thompson languishing
in THE ahl, now which is probably that's probably what he.
Is he's probably a tweener, guy like he can get
called up and he can play some, games BUT i
(54:23):
don't Think Jack thompson is gonna be a, regular whereas
d J emory probably will be a, regular maybe on
a bottom pairing kind of. Thing maybe give you some.
Bash so this is one of those that probably. Neither
but in a really deep, league you're gonna be happy
with Dj, emory like in a thirty two team, league
Whereas Jack thompson probably just isn't gonna play that many.
Games so there you, Go. Jesse we. Enter we ended
