This episode is sponsored by Scare Scotland. Hello and welcome back to Film Pro,
Productivity and Success, the podcast thathelps film pros and other creative people,
all creative people really to live amore focused, effective and happy life.

(00:21):
My name is Carter Ferguson and thisis episode one hundred and thirty Hard
Work versus the Law of Attraction.Since you alone are responsible for your thoughts,
only you can change them Paramahansa Yoganandaunquote. Well, here we are,

(00:42):
folks at the New Year's episode. But I'm not going to make a
meal of this one. It's nota special episode. It's just another one
of the exciting episodes I'd like tobring you each week. And if you
want a special, however, Iwould say you need to jump back to
last year New Years Special, whichwas all about your best year Yet by

(01:03):
Jenny Ditzler, and please go backand check that one out and have a
listened to it and put some effortinto it if you want to move into
the new year and achieve your goals, because studies have shown over the years
that people that set New Year's resolutionsgenerally do not actually meet them. In

(01:25):
fact, I think it's something likeforty one percent of Americans in one survey
one survey who said they wanted tomake New Year's resolutions. Out of that
forty one only nine percent of theforty one percent we're actually successful in keeping
them. So in order to beatthose odds, use last Year's New Year's

(01:45):
Show, because it will go througha system which will help you to identify
weaknesses and strengths, to choose thegoals and objectives that really means something to
you, and effectively strategize to achievethem. Poor x secution of your plans
and strategies is the main reason thatyour goals are going to fail, and
Jenny Ditzler's system will be a realboost in the arm to any of you

(02:08):
who are wanting to achieve great thingsin the year ahead. But today,
though, I want to discuss atopic that some of you may already be
aware of. It's often referred toas having a simply having a positive mental
attitude, which is no bad thing, But here specifically, I'm going to
be referring to prosperity consciousness. InWikipedia describes that term as a term yes

(02:35):
and a teaching often referred to anew age and new thought communities and It's
a term sometimes used by financial professionals. It describes the belief that by opening
one's mind to the financial opportunities inthe world, and by living a life
and having a perspective that welcomes financialresources, one will bring financial wealth into

(02:59):
one's life. Prosperity consciousness is basedprimarily on a belief in the law of
attraction and its use for attracting morewealth unquote. And all that possibly begs
the question what is the law ofattraction? Well, the law of attraction
is our philosophy suggesting that positive thoughtsbring positive results into a person's life,

(03:23):
while negative thoughts bring negative outlines. It's based on the belief that thoughts are
a form of energy, and thatpositive energy attracts success in all areas of
your life, including health, finances, and relationships, whereas negative energy will
bring the opposite results. And that'snot really something I can overly disagree with

(03:49):
based on these lofty promises, thoughit begs the further question, is the
law of attraction actually real? Well? While the law of attraction has generated
attention in recent years due to booksspecifically I'm talking about here The Secret,
I'm sorry to say that it absolutelylacks scientific evidence for its claims and is
generally viewed as a pseudo science. With that said, let me just scratch

(04:14):
the surface of it a little bit. And as I said a minute ago,
the law of attraction proffers the ideathat positive thoughts manifest positive experiences and
vice versa. Advocates suggest that thereare three central universal principles that make up
the law of attraction. Number oneis that like attracts like. This law

(04:35):
suggests that similar things are attracted toone another. It means that people tend
to attract people who are similar tothem, but it also suggests that people's
thoughts tend to attract similar results aswell. Negative thinking is believed to attract
negative experiences, while positive thinking isbelieved to produce desirable experiences. And this

(04:58):
is not necessarily my belief, butit really can't be. Then, eye
that positive people are more attractive thannegative ones, and that you want to
back them up, and that negativepeople are more likely to be destructive or
whatever whatever it is that you're workingon. They could be destructive too.
I've done enough episodes now on toxicpersonalities to prove to myself that this is

(05:21):
true. Number two, on theiruniversal principles is that nature abhors a vacuum.
The law of attraction suggests that removingnegative things from your life can make
space for the more positive things totake their place. It's based on the
notion that it's impossible to have acompletely empty space in your mind or in

(05:46):
your life. Proponents of this philosophysay something will always fill the space,
and it's important TOPI to fill thatspace with positivity. That's absolutely my way
of thinking. I have to sayas well. And if you go back
to my episode not that long agoabout Jim Ron's adage that you become the
sum of the five people you spendthe most time with, you will know

(06:08):
exactly what I'm talking about here.Number three, it says of these principles
is the present is always perfect, and that law focuses on the idea that
there are always things that you cando to improve the present moment. While
it might always seem like the presentis somewhat flawed, this law proposes that

(06:29):
rather than feeling dread or unhappiness, you should focus your energy on finding me
ways to make the present moment thebest it can be. And I'd say
that, yes, intelliterally. Iagree with that one, but it's not
always easy or possible to actually dothat. And for example, if you're
in a sinking ship and the runout of lifeboats, no amount of positive

(06:50):
thinking is going to get you outof that one. Now, I'm going
to be posting links in the shownotes for all of this, but just
let me quickly outline. The sevenlaws are kind of mini laws that make
up make up this kind of overalllaw of attraction. Number one is,
and there's shown links in the shownotes to where I'm getting the references for

(07:12):
this, because I'm not I'm nota big proponent myself of the law of
attraction, as you can out andcome to realize, but I do feel
I should introduce it to you here. But number one the law of manifestation.
The law of manifestation states that yourthoughts or our thoughts and feelings create
our reality, and what we focuson is what we manifest in our lives.
In the Law of attraction, affirmationsare a powerful way to keep your

(07:36):
goals top of mind and help mefocus on what you want. That's certainly
something I would go along with.I think I've done a mini episode in
affirmations, although the way I usethem is I think quite different to the
way they're used in this I don'tthink there's any harm. And you're saying
yourself that you've got value and givenyourself positive affirmations to keep you going.

(07:58):
If it helps you to create,I've got no problem with it. Number
two of these many laws is thelaw of magnetism, which states that everything
that has happened in your life, the people, things, and opportunities that
have come into your life, aswell as the circumstances in which you found
yourself, is the result of theenergy you put out into the world,
and in effect that this means thatyou attract what you are. And to

(08:24):
some extent I can go along withthis one as well. If you give
out positive vibes, you give outassistance and help people that tends to come
back to you as good will andother things as well. So Number three
of the many laws the law ofunwavering desire. The law of unwavering desire
states that your desire to achieve orattract a certain thing must be strong and

(08:45):
unyielding in order for you to manifestit in your life, and when your
desires are weak, or without arock solid foundation, they won't be able
to attract what you want. Numberfour the law of delicate balance. When
the different aspects of your life arein balance, you're able to experience true
peace and joy. But in orderto achieve balance, appreciation and gratitude are

(09:11):
required. Number five is the lawof harmony. A lot of harmony describes
the coordinated interplay of forces and elementsthat comprise the universe, and when you're
in tune with it, everything seemseasy, as if you're swimming with the
current rather than against it. That'swhat they talk about as the law of
harmony. Number six the law ofright action, which states that your words

(09:37):
and actions affect the world around youand determine the quality of your experiences in
life. How you behave and treatothers will determine how others treat you.
In effect, I try to alwaystreat others as you would want to be
treated yourself, and treat every singleperson with the same amount of respect.
It's not often you see it,but sometimes you meet someone who's not very

(10:00):
nice to the peers. But whenyou do, it's a massive lesson in
treating everybody with respect. Christine Bottomleyunquote, and that brings me to the
final law here laws seven of thesemini laws of the law of attraction,
and that's the law of universal influence. It's easy to feel small and insignificant

(10:22):
when you look up at the starsat night, but the truth is every
one of us is an integral partof the universe. It's important for you,
therefore, to be aware of yourthoughts, feelings, and actions,
as well as signs from the universeto demonstrate the impact of your actions and
point you in the direction of yourdreams. And by doing so, the

(10:43):
law of attraction states that you willbe able to effectively control your energy and
increase the positive impact you have onthe world around you. And it's at
this point that I'm going to saythat if you want to know more about
the Law of attraction, I'll postsome links in the show notes and you
can go and read about it yourself. I know a lot of people that

(11:03):
really really believe in this stuff, and I think that it's been built on
many useful guiding principles within it,but to some extent, it's just a
bit too airy ferry for me.All of this there is a lot of
talk about a lot of attraction andits benefits, and so I'm trying to

(11:24):
break down the two main ones thatI can see in all of this.
I can see a lot of benefitsfrom it. I don't go one of
the way with this. I goprobably about sixty seventy percent of the way
about all this. But there's twospecific benefits to see. The most positive
benefit that can be derived from thelaw of attraction is the mental discipline that
it teaches about holding exclusively positive thoughts, and that's quite a powerful thing that,

(11:48):
if harnessed, will always help youin achieving your wants and goals.
And secondly, I'd say that thelaw of attraction encourages and a kind of
increasing of gratitude within yourself, andthis makes you a lot happier in general
and more pleasant. I'm more pleasantperson to be around. Possibly, So
it has the added benefit of joyand enhancing your social experience if you can

(12:15):
get your head space into there. But the pitfalls the pitfalls I see,
and there was more here than I'velisted. I did a bit of research
on this. I'm trying to keepit short, but the main pitfalls I
saw on the law of attraction shouldbe spoken about as well. And this
is where believers in the secret maypossibly want to lynch me, for I'm

(12:37):
not a great believer in all ofthis. Strangely though, folks, I've
got two copies of the secret, and I have dipped into an occasion I
was. I think I bought onemyself my friend Derek Munn, great actor
by the way, Derek, hetalked about it. He's a great backer
of all of this, and Ibought it, I think after speaking to
him, but I never really openedit. And then randomly I found one,

(12:58):
believe it or not, in ahedge halfway halfway done, an alleuated
one stuff that it heads. Itook it. So I've ended up with
two copies of it. But I'mnot a massive believer in at all.
I've got a big, completely honestsort. I've gone off on one.
I do have a quote before Igo into this next section. Inspect every
piece of pseudo science, and youwill find a security blanket Isaac Asimov unquote.

(13:24):
And this is pseudo science. Thereare no studies that prove this lot's
worth at all. But as Isay, it's built on some interesting principles
which I do go along with.Secondly, holding an exclusively positive perspective is
unrealistic, and realistic unrealistic. Youhave to be balanced and face negativity to

(13:48):
be able to act effectively to changeit. It's like that episode I did
on listing your weaknesses. If youignored your weaknesses and just plowed on,
how would you know you even hadweaknesses? And another problem I have with
this is it doesn't largely it's notpurpose driven. And I'm not saying that
somewhere down the line the guru isthe people that push the secret, etc.

(14:09):
Don't don't break it down into yourpurpose driven tasks. But this general
stuff that I've been reading about saysthat the universe sets your life purpose.
You pick the specific goal based onwants as well, not on your values.
And if if the best way forme to achieve my goals is to
live as if I've already achieved them, then there's no reason to make further

(14:33):
plans to do so. So removingpurpose from your life and hanging on with
fingers crossed that with positivity things aregoing to go good. It's not doesn't
really doesn't really convince me fully,And next up, skipping the process and
focusing on the result is not agreat way to achieve anything productivity wise that
bothers me about this. And finally, again these are from These are from

(14:56):
research and partly my own thoughts. You ALLOWE are completely responsible for any goal
that is not successfully achieved, nomatter how unrealistic the goal actually is.
And so this principle, this wholelaw, assumes that you not only control
your thoughts and actions, but alsothose of everyone around about you and of

(15:18):
nature. And the fact is youreally don't. So I absolutely believe that
there are things to be learned fromprosperity consciousness and from the law of attraction.
I like the idea of a positivemindset, of affirmations, of picturing
what you want and focusing your energytowards achieving it. And I know that
this is just a quick dip intothe topic as well, which perhaps oversimplifies

(15:41):
it all, but I cannot getaway from the feeling that fundamentally I believe
that the law of attraction or prosperityconsciousness in itself is nothing without hard work
behind it. Simply wishing positive thoughtsis only part of the puzzle, is
by no means the solution a positivemindset, not a doomsday mentality. Supports

(16:08):
being exceptional, way and dire unquote, and I'll leave the topic there for
now. The only call to actionin fact, being to focus down on
a positive mindset because I think thatis a good thing. And if you
want more, please go back tolast year's New Year special and get our

(16:29):
best year yet program built. Thatis definitely worth your time. The episode
is probably forty or fifty minutes long. It's quite involved. Get a copy
of the book. If you're havingtrouble getting a copy of the book,
drop me a line. I'll bloomeand buy your book if it comes down
here. This is not an expensivething. You can get a Kindled download
for like three quid, so giveme a shout if you're having trouble finding

(16:49):
it. But do go back andcheck that one out. And again that
we just say that I'm very verygrateful for you joining me again here today
and for the whole year. I'malso extremely grateful to everyone that has supported
the show through sponsorships or through executiveproducer titles, and who perhaps have left
positive reviews on things like iTunes orit is not called it tunes anymore,

(17:14):
what we call it, we're callingit Apple Podcasts. Now these all make
a big difference. I hope you'vegot something out of the show. I
hope you're learning from it, andI hope there's positive energy coming towards you
as well. I've had this topicon my board for upwards of a year,
so I'm really glad that I've gotaround to finally tackling it. But
this episode also marks the midpoint inseason ten and I'm looking for I think

(17:38):
four more sponsors at the time ofrecording to complete the season. Sponsorships are
fifteen pounds and take the form ofThis episode is sponsored by insert your information

money's raised are going into Google adpromotion for the show at the moment,

(18:22):
and I'll probably do a show onhow that went further down the line,
and it's helped in no small partby our executive producer Christopher McPhillips Offseason ten
and his company are Toss Digital,So shout out to you guys. So
there we go. Stay positive,my friends, you're ahead, meet those

(18:42):
challenges head on, and if Ican help in any way, please do
drop me a line. I'm verykeen to hear from you an offer advice
if you're struggling with a productivity topic, and I'll just jump in here.
It's the day before the show goesout. But when I recorded this show,
I did not know I was goingto be shooting a short film in
January, and I just wanted tocome on and ask those of you that

(19:04):
listen if you like what you hearand you want to support me. I've
got yet another crowdfunder running, thistime not just for a few hundred quid
to push the podcast on a bitfurther. I think we've got about another
year's worth of money in the potfor that. This is just for the
short film. I'm putting about onetwo hundred nod into it myself, but

(19:26):
it's quite a big endeavor because it'sset inside moving cars in the dark in
the Highlands of Scotland, and thereforefor safety reasons, I need to shoot
some of it outside and some ofit inside. And it's an unusual niche
genre of the festive horror film onlyonly run. I'll be under ten minutes
when it runs. But it's logisticallyvery very difficult, and it's the first

(19:48):
time I've got back on the filmmakinghorse since twenty nineteen, when I had
a number of bad experiences. Soif you like me, if you like
the stuff that I do, ifyou've seen in any of my past work
and you want to support it,please go onto the indie go go link,
which I'll put in the show notes, and give me a helping hand,
or you'll be able to find outloads about it on social media.

(20:10):
I'm sure a lot of you willknow about it already. And if you
can't help financially, it's about spreadingthe world. If you've listened to my
crowdfunding episode, you'll know firstly howdifficult it is to do this sort of
thing, but also that you knowif I can get two hundred people to
give me ten pounds each, whichis a much smaller commitment than two hundred
pounds with ten people, then Iam going to achieve my target reasonably easily.

(20:36):
But I need to make sure thattwo hundred people know about it,
and it's two hundred people that areactually interested in back in me. I
know there's always someday these days withtheir handout, but this is I'm worthwhile
endeavor. The show will go,the film will be made. It's bringing
a lot of people together. It'sthe first of several I'm going to make
this year as well, and onceit's done, it's going to go onto
the festival circuit for a short timeand I'm going to release it to the

(20:59):
public on you as Eve of twentytwenty eight three, so everyone can enjoy
it for free. That's the plan. That's enough of an interruption to this
original episode, though, I hopewe all have a fantastic New Year,
and yeah, twenty twenty three isgoing to be a good one, folks.
I'll catch you in the next episode. I'll lend today though with some

(21:21):
words from Bernard Berenson, who's whoI think it quoted from possibly before anyway,
he said I would I could standon a busy corner, hat in
hand and beg people to throw meall their wasted hours unquote, so waste
not a moment, my friends, carpe diem, seize the day, grab

(21:42):
it, hold it, run withit, and make the next twelve months
of your life the best they've everbeen. Now take control of your own
destiny, keep on shooting, andjoin me next year on film Pro Productivity
