A limiting mind virus is simply a limiting belief - a state of mind or belief about yourself that restricts you in some way. Today I talk about these limiting beliefs, how to identify them within yourself, and how to get around them.

Do you have a limiting belief or more than one? Not sure? Then ask yourself this question: WHAT IS THE DISCONNECT BETWEEN WHAT I DESERVE AND WHAT I BELIEVE I DESERVE?

QUOTES:

There is one grand lie - that we are limited. The only limits we have are the limits we believe. Wayne Dyer

You can't escape from a prison until you recognize you are in one. People who have chosen to live within the limits of their old beliefs continue to have the same experiences. It takes effort and commitment to break old patterns Bob Proctor

If you raise your standards but don't really believe you can meet them, you've already sabotaged yourself. You won't even try; you'll be lacking the sense of certainty that allows you to tap the deepest capacity that's within you... Our beliefs are like unquestioned commands, telling us how things are, what's possible and impossible and what we can and cannot do. They shape every action, every thought and every feeling that we experience. As a result, changing our belief systems is central to making any real and lasting change in our lives. Tony Robbins

If you accept a limiting belief, then it will become a truth for you. Louise Hay

(00:05):
Hello, and welcome back to Filmpro Productivity and Success, the podcast that
helps film professionals and other creative peopleto live a more focused, effective and
happy life. My name is CarterFerguson and this is episode one hundred and
thirty seven, Limiting Mind Violencies. You can't escape from a prison until you

(00:30):
recognize that you're in one. Peoplewho have chosen to live within the limits
of their old beliefs continue to havethe same experiences. It takes effort and
commitment to break old patterns. BobProctor unquote, well, welcome back,
my friends. For the first episodeof season A living and a lot has

(00:52):
been happening with me and I've barelyhad time for my feet to touch the
floor since the last episode aired.I've just finished a contract with the BBC
where I was engaged as fight directoron the latest season of Missus Brown's Boys,
and all I can say about thatone is that the people that make
it are overflowing with talent and runsuch a pleasant working environment that it was
a genuine, genuine pleasure to beinvolved in it. What a lot of

(01:15):
talent they have there. And priorto that, I directed fights on a
feature film starring Jianny Capaldi and waitfor it, Samuel L. Jackson.
Yes, you heard me right.I had ten days of fights on it,
five days of which I was workingwith Sam. And unfortunately I can't
say very much about it. It'sjust the nature of these things. But
at working with Sam was really prettydark, fantastic. Now this episode is

(01:38):
going out about a month after Ihad intended on releasing Season eleven, and
the reason for that is partly thesebig jobs that have come along, partly
a little bit of food poisoning thatI got a week ago, which was
not particularly fun, and partly becauseI'm still working on the bloody short film
that started in January. I cannotbelieve I'm still working at it. It's
had various small problems and we're tryingto resolve them. We'll try to get

(02:01):
that out. I had expected tobe off this film at least a month
ago. I can't believe we're stillworking on it. But basically myself and
the d op Neil McMillan, arehaving to work at some things out that
didn't quite go as we'd thought theywere going to go. But it's mostly
locked. We just need to driveit home now. But anyway, I
found a space a gap to getthis show recorded. So this is a

(02:23):
fairly standard show. But my intentionis for the next five shows, the
first kind of half of season atLiving to be slightly smaller minnisodes. Let's
just see how that happens. Iset out with the best intentions to write
a minnisode and then end up writinga full length one. But I'm really
going to try and pull it back. But getting this one out is an
important step because it will gave mea little bit of sea room and it

(02:46):
should help me to drive forward toget at a few more recorded. So
you should be getting six over thenext few weeks, and then I'll have
a little bit of a break andI'll do another six of them. We'll
see how it goes. So withoutfurther ado, then let's get on with
it. There is one grand liethat we are limited. The only limits

(03:06):
we have are the limits we believeway en dire unquote, and a limiting
mind virus, as I've called thisepisode, a limiting mind virus, is
simply a limiting belief. It's astate of mind or belief about yourself that
restricts you in some way. Andthese beliefs are often false accusations you make
about yourself that can cause a numberof negative results. And here's a few

(03:31):
examples of limiting beliefs in yourself.I'm not good enough, which could be
I'm not good enough to manage thisproject, to make this film, or
submit my work. If you're awriter, that can be a thing.
Another one might be that I'm tooold or too young. I'm too young
to be a manager, I'm tooold to keep up with the youngsters.

(03:52):
Or I don't have enough time.I don't have enough time to be creative
or earn an additional income through mycreative work. Or I'm not smart enough.
I'm not smart enough to lead thismeeting. I'll look foolish if I
speak up, as I'm always wrong. Or I don't have enough experience.
I don't have enough experience for thisbig career move that I'm planning. If

(04:14):
I try this, I'll look foolishto those that do it more often than
I do. Or I'll never besuccessful. I'll never be successful in my
industry. I'll never be successful becauselife is unfair. I don't have enough
money. I don't have enough moneyto enjoy my life. I don't have
enough money to do things as wellas I'd like to do them. I'll
never be one of the best mightbe another. I'll never be one of

(04:38):
the best on the team. OrI'm not talented enough. I'm not talented
enough to get the job or tokeep the job. I won't even bother
applying. I'll never be a greatleader. I'll never be a great leader
because of my lack of confidence. These are all limiting beliefs. Other limiting
beliefs might be things like I can'tbe successful because the world is a against

(05:00):
me. I felt like that quitea few types. I've got to be
honest, and I can't be successfulbecause no one likes me. I can't
be successful because the odds are stackedagainst me. I can't be successful because
of the color of my skin. That can't be successful because I'm ugly.
I can't be successful because I'm tootall was one that I heard. I
can't be successful because I can't easilylearn new skills, I can't be successful

(05:24):
because of the patriarchy, or evensimpler ones that you might have picked up
from just the way you were broughtup, things like money is a bad
thing, true love, doesn't exist. Fulfilling careers don't exist. Other people
will think I'm difficult, awkward, stupid, or annoying if I do this
or that thing. And I'll addto this ever expanding potential list of limiting

(05:50):
beliefs. That some of these limitingbeliefs can feel empowering. And this is
a massive and all encompassing power withvictim mentality, which I've already done a
show one. Believing that the worldowes you something, that you're better than
others, or that others just don'tget you are often just excuses to avoid

(06:12):
growth and stay within your comfort zone. Tony Robbins talks about limiting beliefs.
He says, if you raise yourstandards but don't really believe you can meet
them, you've already sabotaged yourself. You won't even try. You'll be lacking
the sense of certainty that allows youto tap the deepest capacity that's within you.

(06:32):
Our beliefs are like unquestioned commands, telling us how things are, what's
possible and impossible, in what wecan and cannot do. They shape every
action, every thought, and everyfeeling that we experience, and as a
result, changing our belief systems iscentral to making any real and lasting changes

(06:55):
in our lives unquote. And bythe way, Tony's got a page dedicated
to this on his website which Ifound during the research. Of course,
I will link to this in theshow notes, but it's something like Tony
Robins dot com forward slash Limiting BeliefsGuide. It's that simple anyway. Here's
the thing about mind viruses. Thereare a form of self sabotage, again

(07:19):
something I've already already done a showone. But when you recognize them,
you can counter them. You don'tneed to be a slave to them.
So here's the question. Do youthink you've got a limiting belief or do
you think you've got more than onelimiting belief? Are you not sure?

(07:41):
We'll ask yourself this question. Whatis the disconnect between what I deserve and
what I believe I deserve? I'llrepeat that one, What is the disconnect
between what I deserve and what Ibelieve I deserve. The point is,
if you can identify what is holdingyou back within yourself, then you can

(08:01):
go about exchanging that negative mind victusfor a more empowering self belief. Changing
limited beliefs like these is one ofthe hardest things that we can do in
life, though, but when youdo, you will be rewarded with unimaginable

(08:22):
possibilities. My advice to counter thissort of thing, and it won't be
a surprise to regular listeners, isto write this stuff down. Don't just
listen to this show while you're walkingthe dog or driving along and half think
about it. Remember, if youwrite stuff down, you're forty two percent
more likely to get it done. And a little side benefit of writing stuff

(08:43):
down is that if you write themdown, if you write your thoughts down,
that process can also help you toalleviate any stresses that are associated with
the belief that you're thinking about. And once you've written it down, then
it's much easier to assess it's asecause you might write something down thinking that's
a problem and it actually might notbe. It could actually turn out to
be a strength. And this isall part of critical thinking. So what

(09:07):
I want you to do then isanalyze whether your beliefs are coming from a
place of accuracy or falsehood. Gettingto the bottom of your limiting beliefs can
help you to see them for whatthey really are. So next time a
negative belief presents itself. Take amoment to pause and analyze the thought,
evaluate whether it's self limiting, andif there is any concrete evidence that you've

(09:31):
got to back up that belief.Ask yourself if the thought is coming from
fear of the unknown or from apast experience, for example. Because once
you've confirmed that you have found aself limiting mind virus, then and only
then will you be able to exchangethat belief for a new paradigm. And
this is called reframing. And letme just look back over the list I

(09:54):
gave earlier and see if I cangive an example of exchanging a bad mind
virus for a good one. Somoney is bad was one of the examples.
There's nothing wrong with the earning moneywould be the exchange of that,
because I know some people think earningmoney is a bad thing and they could
keep themselves back. I had aconversation with an actors recently this. She

(10:15):
was frightened to bring up the factthat it cost her money to get to
where we were working, and Iwas like, you just need to talk
about it, but she had thisfear of talking about money. So money
is bad could become money is justpart of life. Talking about money is
no bad thing. There's nothing wrongwith earning a decent wage. These are
simple things you could exchange it for. I used, what's one of my

(10:37):
paradigms was this two she'll pass whenI had the fear of entering new situations.
I have talked about this several timesin the past on the show,
and one of the reasons I dothe shows. I had my own nervous
breakdown, the nervous breakdown in twentytwelve, and in order for me to
kind of get the courage to goback out and do things, I just

(10:58):
started doing that kind of stoke ofsaying, you know, I've got a
difficult situation to go through here, but it will only take an hour and
then it'll be passed. So thatallowed me to get to back into society,
back into going to parties and stuff, basically going speaking to people.
But anyway, I don't want toget cut down in this. Once you've
identified what you're limiting mind viruses, your self limiting belief is, then you

(11:20):
need to exchange it, reframe itas something else. So let's all break
free from the shackles of our ownlimiting beliefs. Folks, For within each
one of us lies this extraordinary capacityto achieve greatness. I believe that I
believe in you, even if youdon't, and so I want you to

(11:41):
embrace your true potential and unleash thepower that resides within you. For the
only limitations that truly exist are theones that we impose upon ourselves. Now,
just to sum up, the latestresearch suggests that we've got about six
thousand, two hundred thoughts per day, some of us of a few more,

(12:03):
some of us of a few less. My dog has about three thoughts
sleep, walk, eat. That'spretty much what angust us. A little
bit of love in there as well, because he's a lovely creature. Anyway,
we've got six thousand, two hundredthoughts per day, and if even
one quarter of those are negative,we're feeding our minds with a lot of
pessimism. But with that said,if we can learn how to stop that

(12:24):
negative self talk, exchange it,reframe it, and feed our minds with
empowering thoughts instead, we can allachieve great things. Next week's show will
hopefully be a true Minnesota that isten minutes an under, and it will
be on an important productivity topic.Which I've not yet decided, so tune

(12:48):
in to find out more about thatone. Let me end today though with
some words from Louise Hay who said, if you accept a limiting belief,
then it will become a truth foryou. Now take control of your own
