Albert Einstein famously said that the definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. That is pattern recognition in its most easily recognised form, but how many of you time and time again find yourself falling into that pattern, in your day-to-day life?

(00:06):
Hello, and welcome back to FilmPro Productivity and Success, the podcast that
helps film professionals and other creative peopleto live a more focused, effective,
and I like to think a happierlife. My name is Carter Ferguson and
this is episode one hundred and fortyone. Pattern recognition. When information overload

(00:30):
occurs. Pattern recognition is how todetermine truth. Marshall McLuhan unquote. Now,
in the last two weeks, Iintroduced you to six invaluable pieces of
productivity wisdom in short and to thepoint shows. And if you want a
quick fix of productivity value, pleasego back and have a listen. Today,

(00:55):
though, I'm covering a topic thathas been on my mind for some
time. A kind touched on itlast week, and it's a topic which
you need to be very aware ofif you're going to find success in today's
busy world. It's a skill whichwill help you to navigate the white noise
of information that is unendingly thrust uponus in the modern world. And in

(01:17):
a broad sense, pattern recognition andanother thing, inductive reasoning form the basis
for all scientific inquiry. Inductive reasoningbeing the logical process that involves using specific
experiences, observations, or facts toevaluate a situation, and this is an

(01:38):
essential tool in statistics, research, probability, and day to day decision making.
Inductive reasoning can help you identify patternsand make better decisions. And in
case you're wondering, the main differencebetween inductive and deductive reasoning is that inductive
reasoning aims at developing a theory.Deductive reasoning aims at testing and existing theory.

(02:05):
And yes, I did look allof that up. The pattern recognition,
though, refers to the process ofidentifying and interpreting recurring patterns or regularities
in data, information, or personalexperiences. In business, of course,
pattern recognition is used to analyze markettrends, consumer behavior, and competitors strategies,

(02:29):
allowing businesses to tailor their products andservices accordingly, leading to improved customer
satisfaction and increased sales. Businesses willalso use pattern recognition techniques to identify inefficiencies
and bottlenecks in their production processes. They can also identify anomalies and patterns associated

(02:50):
with fraud, which in turn allowsthem to take proactive measures to minimize financial
losses. Recognizing patterns in business datais the baseasis for demand forecasting, inventory
management, resource allocation, and strategicplanning. And with all that said,
I'm more interested today in how itaffects us one to one, how can

(03:14):
we harness it, and how canwe use it by analyzing our own experiences
to avoid the pitfalls of modern living. Albert Einstein famously said that the definition
of insanity is doing the same thingover and over again and expecting different results.
That is pattern recognition in its mosteasily recognized form. But how many

(03:38):
of you, time and time againfind yourself falling into a pattern in your
day to day life with relationships,or in the way you use social media,
or the way you work with yourfinances or business promotion. Pattern recognition
helps you to identify recurring patterns inyour daily routines and tasks, and if

(03:58):
you can recognize the patterns, youcan better optimize your time management, prioritize
your tasks, and allocate your resourceseffectively. For example, through pattern recognition,
you might notice that you have atendency to procrastinate on certain types of
tasks, particularly those that require extensiveresearch perhaps or involve complex subject matters.

(04:21):
But or it could be that youjust recognize that certain types of day you
don't work as well or as othertype other times of day. But once
you've recognized whatever the pattern is,you can put in place actions or techniques
that will help you to counter theproblems. And some quick examples of these
productivity techniques in that situation I describeda minute ago, it would be breaking

(04:42):
down the task using time blocking, eliminating distractions, and creating routines. If
we keep doing what we're doing,we're going to keep getting what we're getting
Stephen Covey unquote. Recognition also helpsyou make better decisions by identifying similarities and

(05:04):
trends in past experiences. By recognizingpatterns and outcomes and consequences, you can
make more informed choices, avoid repeatingmistakes, and identify opportunities for improvement.
And this in turn leads to increasedproductivity by reducing errors and streamlining decision making

(05:26):
processes. For example, I foundover time, and I recognized this a
while ago, that whenever I wascommunicating with various UK creative funding agencies,
that I would routinely get ignored.I wouldn't get a response. But recognizing
the pattern in all this led meto start identifying instead individuals within these organizations

(05:46):
with whom I tried to build relationships, and by doing this my comms with
these individuals who represented the organizations,I would say at ten times increase in
response rate. Simply put, ifyou can find an and this is just
the side here, if you canfind an email for an individual within a
company or an organization that you're tryingto get responses from, you are far

(06:09):
far more likely to get a responsefrom a named individual than when you email
a Hello at or a contact ator an info at email address. It
is the mark of an educated mindto be able to entertain a thought without
accepting it Aristotle unquote. The abilityto spot existing or emerging patterns is one

(06:35):
of the most, if not themost critical skills in intelligent decision making,
though we're mostly unaware that we doit all the time. Combining your past
experience, intuition, and common sense, the ability to recognize patterns will give
you the ability to predict what willhappen next with some degree of accuracy.

(07:00):
Let me suggest that you engage thathigh level thinking that I talk about in
episode one of this show in allareas of your life and work, and
pattern recognition is part of that Itwill help you to make better informed decisions,
identify warning signs, and take appropriateactions to avoid pitfalls. It will
empower you to be proactive rather thanreactive, and to sum up that sentence

(07:27):
which could have got a lot longer. All of that will lead to improved
financial stability and improved personal growth. In next week's show, I'll touch on
this sort of thing again in away. It's another short episode, and
in it I am going to lookat the term useful idiots and how to
ensure that your yourself don't become one. Let me end today though with a

(07:51):
quote from Bruce Fairstein or Fierstein.I think it might be Fierstein who said
the distance between insanity and genius ismeasured only by success. So take control
of your own destiny. My friends, keep on shooting and join me next
