Speaker 1 (00:02):
The following is in Nova Scotia You eighteen Major Hockey
League Intermission Interview. Welcome back to the Halifax Form. After
one period of play, the Halifax Max lead the week's
majors by score two to one. Please be joined by
the Max goaltending coach, Liam Oxner. Liam, your thoughts on
that very quick start from you guys, two goals in
the first fifty five seconds.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, we definitely came out and started some of them
focusing on it's playing a full sixty, especially with our goaltenders.
That's twenty down and we got another forty to go.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
So you are the goaltending coach, So I got to
ask you about your two goaltenders, Kale Campbell and Chandler Bell.
Both guys nine to zero. They literally have split the
season eighteen games. Both have sparkling numbers with goals against
and save percentage. As their goaltending coach, what have you
seen from these two guys other than the sparkling numbers.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Other than the sparkling numbers, are both creatures of habits.
Chandler Bell is the same every game, comes out ready
to go. We know when he's dialed in, we know
when he's ready when he's going to be playing well.
Same with Kail Campbell. We know when he's locked in,
dialed in, and it all comes back to practice and
practice habits.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
You mentioned Kale Campbell. I don't want to single out
one guy over the other with the goaltending ten, but
I gotta mention Kale Campbell's unbelievable tournament shutout streak. He
got to shut out a few weeks ago against the
same week's team for nothing in the Monktonian Final. I
believe it's six shutouts in a row in tournament played
for Kale Campbell. What is it about tournaments and Kale

(01:32):
that work?

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Honestly, Cale came to me at the end of the
year and said he loves tournaments and how excited he
is for tournaments. I had a conversation with him about
the tournaments before he went away to Ottawa, and ever
since then he's been locked in a tournament. So he's
been playing well and vickiming us in some big games
and tournaments.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
As the goaltending coach, obviously credit goes to you for
what you've been able to teach and work with these
two young goaltenders on. But when you've got two goalies
that are undefeated through the regular season, You finish second
in the Ottawa U eighteen tournament, you win the Monktonian
eighteen and oh great numbers. Do you sometimes scratch your
head and go, Okay, what am I gonna talk to

(02:13):
these guys about today? What's that like for you? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:16):
I was always a picky goalie and I would pick
apart everything that I used to play or when I
used to play.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
So now when I'm.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Coaching, I pick apart everything. So every little habit, every
little detail, we go over just what could have happened,
what we can do better, and what we work on
a practice.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Any goaltender can fall into bad habits, but especially at
this level where you're dealing with young players, bad habits
can be easy to slide into. How do you keep
those bad habits away? What are some tricks that you
have willam.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Not only me, but our goalies are hold themselves accountable.
Our whole team holds themselves accountable, especially especially with the
year like we're having. And yeah, especially it comes down
to practice where guys just need to work harder and
they push each other every single day to get better
and to be.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
At that level.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
We want to play out.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
We'll wrap up with the ear in a second. But
goaltenders always want the net. But the Max have always,
for the most part, gone with a rotation, giving equal
time to their goaltenders no matter what year it is.
Knowing that, what message do you give to the goalies
at the beginning of the year to let them know, Hey,
you might be hot, you might be whatever, but you're
gonna share the net. How do you message back to

(03:22):
them and how do they receive it?

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Harvard work ethic comes down to practices, especially the year
we're having. We want to see battle and compete every
single day in day out. It's not only games. We
don't only recognize games. It's all about habits, practices, how
much we compete, how much.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Battle we have.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Like I said, we are holding ourselves accountable this year,
and they are holding themselves accountable as well.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
We take you back to your younger years when you
were a goaltender for this team in this league. What
were some things that you learned in terms of your
goaltending coaches talking to you that you kind of kept
with you and have carried through now to you being
the goalie coach. A couple of tips that you remember
getting that you like to pass on.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Sometimes it's okay to slow down the game. Goalies tended
nowadays move really quickly and make the biggest push just
gonna get them there quicker when reality is the smallest push,
just multiple smallest pushes will get them there just as fast.
So it's all about saying goomposition, having your depth, especially
being a smaller guy, you got to play to your
advantages with speed, with your dapt your angles, stuff like that.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Well, we appreciate your time and we wish you luck
in the second and third the team and your goalies,
and certainly we wish you success for the rest of
the year. Thanks again for your time, perfect, Thank you
