One of the most interesting and authentic voices within the sport of wrestling is featured on Episode 64 as two-time Olympian and five-time US World Team member Ildar Hafizov joins the program. Topics include his decision to move up in weight at this stage of his career, how and why he began running practices for the Army team, what it has been like to move into coaching while still competing, and the motivation behind him venturing out to do clinics for age-group wrestlers as well as their coaches. It is a very extensive discussion, and one that offers plenty of valuable (and entertaining) insights.

(00:52):
games gold medals twenty twenty, three two time Military world,
medalists and it just goes on and on and, on
and of Course i'm referring to one Il Dar happy
thof Of army W, cap the best technician in The
United States Greco roman. PROGRAM i Think i'm fairly sure

(01:16):
if you were to conduct a poll including everyone in
anyone who follows this style in this, country they would unanimously.
AGREE i would hope they, would because it is clear
as today That ildar is and has been the best
technician In American Greco roman wrestling since coming over here

(01:39):
in two thousand and, fifteen, yeah, Fifteen and, anyway we
cover a variety of. Topics him moving up to sixty three,
kilos that was a given if he wanted to wrestle
In september at The World Team trials since it was
Not olympic. Weights but he stayed there for The World
Team trials just a few weeks ago at the end

(01:59):
Of April, vegas and he made it to the finals
of That trials, tournament where he fell to teammate and
twenty Twelve Olympian Ellis. Coleman and there was one, thing
and it gets brought up in the, interview but the
one thing is that Il dharr has made ten Straight

(02:19):
World Team trials best of three. Series he's advanced to
every best of three available to. Him a couple of those.
Years there was The Raleigh trials right in twenty, nineteen
that was The challenge, tournament and Then FINAL x was
a few weeks, Later so that's two best of threes
in that season. Alone twenty twenty, one he made it

(02:43):
to he won The olympic trials and then he made
it to The World Team trial finals In september twenty
twenty one Against Dalton, roberts a series that went To.
Dalton but Il darr has been a steady force and
he's reached a new face his, career and that's all
going to get talked. About those of you who are

(03:04):
into this, stuff you'll already know that in addition to,
competing he's also been helping out a whole bunch At
army as far as running training, sessions practices wherever we
want to call, THEM i like to say. Practice and,
yeah it's just been a lot for. Him so we're
going to just jump right into it With ildar and

(03:25):
then come back for a little post interview rap as
we so often. Do All, right to start off, with
if you could what In september and THEN i guess
going forward After, September but what In september throughout the

(03:48):
summer prompted you to go up to sixty three? Kilograms
and the reason WHY i ask you, this especially why
ask you, this is BECAUSE i know that even at
sixty kilograms you walked around very, light like sixty one sixty,
two so why go up to sixty three for you,

(04:12):
know all that? Stuff or so.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
It was like, competition, right so it's after like what
they will have Like olympic team. Trials it was nothing
on the. List and it Was may WHEN i went
to the trip to Help dunton Wrestling. Istanbul so after,

(04:37):
that it was nothing for a whole year till this.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Year. APRIL i was.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Like What i'm going to do with all my performers
were all like WHEN i was trainings and all this.
Stuff so when they was like putting competition together for
An Olympic, WORLDS i was, Like, Okay i'm gonna go
sixty three On.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Wressell you know why?

Speaker 4 (05:00):
Not competition is competition AND i always wanted to. Compete
it's my favorite thing to.

Speaker 5 (05:07):
Do all, right well then wait a, minute then all,
right well let's time. Outs let's open this up a
little bit. More i'm right, though WHEN i say, that you,
like typically were walking around at sixty one sixty? Two, correct.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Depends right, Now i'm walking around sixty. Seven it depends
on the.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Season When i'm at at this, Season SO i was,
like IF i need to be, LIGHT i can't be
light IF i don't need to be, Light and it's
LIKE i don't have weight. ISSUES i know how to
manage it by this, time so it's like it's not.
Hard but usually WHEN i was wrestled, SIXTY i was sixty.
Three no more than sixty. THREE i have to practice

(05:52):
sixty one and a.

Speaker 5 (05:53):
HALF i know this is going to sound like a ridiculous.
QUESTION i know that you're not twenty five years old.
Anymore was, there, ever, ever, ever even a slight thought
leading up to The september trials that you could do fifty? Five? No,
Never oh my, gosh, okay all, Right.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
No it was like it Was.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
Max my conversation With, max he was, like maybe you
should go fifty.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Five try.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
IT i was, Like, Max i've done it. BEFORE i,
KNOW i know it was hurting me.

Speaker 5 (06:25):
Bad it's like this the same day way into.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Yeah and now it's the same day. WAITING i was,
like not even. CLOSE i was THINKING i can do fifty,
eight no, Problem, no.

Speaker 5 (06:37):
Well fifty eight should be the weight class. Anyway, yeah fifty.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
EIGHT i got to do fifty, eight but fifty five not?

Speaker 5 (06:43):
Anymore, yeah, well, okay fair. Enough, now then the second
part of, this AND i feel LIKE i have to
almost clear this up for the audience. Too how come
you decided to stay at sixty three Four april, trials
being that sixty was back and all, THAT.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
I feel better at sixty, Three like health, WISE i feel.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
Better my joints is not, hurting my bones is, fine
AND i can do as much AS i was doing
as sixty but without harming my. Body it's like his
knee is not hurting as much AS i was cutting
down to. Sixty and WHEN i figure out the weight
cut was, like even if it's like there's not a
lot three, kilos but it was still like on my

(07:34):
joints AFTER i cut, weight AFTER i, wrestled it.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Was like more painful than his right.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Now right now is like even IF i didn't have
any soreness in, COMPETITION.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
I was feeling great at sixty. THREE i don't know
that's that's Probably AND.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
I told not That i'm gonna bump to sixty. SEVEN
i will be in the final the NEXT i think
you're playing with me.

Speaker 5 (08:04):
Fair, enough all, Right, well then, here even though you
AND i have talked privately before, THIS i still HAVEN'T
i haven't even asked you, this but now you know,
what you're not going to even answer this like the
way that LIKE i because you're just gonna be straight
up and you would never, ever you would never use

(08:25):
an excuse or anything like. THAT i know you. Wouldn't
i'll say it this. Way then there were certain opponents'.
Matches now, GRANTED i mean you also had a great
military world at sixty three, too SO i mean that
should probably be. Mentioned but there were some opponents that

(08:51):
you have dealt with at sixty three, who at least
in my estimation you could go ahead and correct.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Me.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Were even if you beat, them they were tougher matches
than they probably would have or should have been if
at sixty. Kilograms would you agree with that or.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
No we'll match we're talking About i'm not.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
No, No i'm just And i'm not even thinking of
a specific, match just several opponents you've. HAD i don't
want to mention any particular names if they're from The United,
states but, like there are a, few like just even
going even, internationally there's just some MATCHES i just, wondered, like,
Wow Ill darth's probably weighing sixty five or something on

(09:35):
the mat at this. Point but yet his guy probably
cuts down to sixty three from you, know seventy three or.
Something you know What i'm. Saying but you had some larger,
opponents is What i'm trying to get. At.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
YEAH i wasn't the biggest one for.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
Sure, Okay i'm glad we cleared the cob webs on that.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
One OH i was the biggest, one BUT i still.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
Strong you felt, Fine, yeah as the even like in
the military World so with that In, ALBANY i hurt
my ankle like high ankle. Spring it was like, bad,
bad and it was decision. Point So i'm going To Military.

(10:21):
Worlds it was in two weeks Or i'm not. Going
AND i was talking To sean about it and he was, like,
okay if you want to, go. GO i was, like,
Okay i'm gonna take my. Ankle take whatever pills like
makes me, happy makes my joints, Happy So i'm gonna

(10:41):
take them And i'm going to. Wrestle and WHEN i,
WRESTLE i feel. Fine and in the final match with The,
turk when he did HIS parteri attempts like a couple of,
TIMES i landed like bad on on that.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Ankle.

Speaker 4 (10:56):
AGAIN i couldn't push off my. Leg it's like NOW
i feel way better because it's like held, up and
it was like time time password by now is like four,
months five, months BECAUSE i feel way better than it was.
Before but even even, THEN i didn't feel LIKE i

(11:18):
was just small small to sixty, THREE i was. Fine
it's LIKE i don't feel like much of the, difference
especially the the most of the wrestlers who wrestle, sixty
they wrestle sixty three.

Speaker 5 (11:33):
Too, yeah, SA i understand.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
That it's not a lot of, them like you can
see who wrestle sixty, three they didn't wrestle. Sixty it's
just few of them couldn't couldn't make. Sixty but basically
most of them for The olympic, year they going to
cut down to sixty.

Speaker 5 (11:54):
Anyways, yeah, yeah there's certainly seventy five percent them.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
Anyway, yeah the most of the.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
People it's just maybe That italian That italian No French
french did couldn't cut down to.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Sixty he barely cut down to sixty. Three if you
if you remember that, guy, yep.

Speaker 5 (12:17):
YEAH i mean he was a little. Quick it's strange
to see you above sixty kil AS i gotta tell.
YOU i mean it took me a minute even at
The september, trials like it was just like, huh all, right, yeah,
yeah you, KNOW i don't know what do you?

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Think what do you? Think why? Not?

Speaker 5 (12:38):
Look, Uh i'd say that like height, wise height, wise
there's plenty of sixty threes or like your. Height it's
just THAT i always in my mind think of you
as walking. AROUND i, MEAN i don't know WHY i,
do BUT i even wrote that a couple of, times

(13:00):
like in various preview, stuff how you walk. Around you
were walking around kind of light even for sixty and it's, like,
well now you're in a way class that's three kilos
higher where you know that guys are cutting down from you,
know significantly. Heavier SO i have no choice but to

(13:22):
at least imagine, like oh, man like you, know there
there might be some size difference issues on, occasion like
even just even in matches you one, Handily LIKE i
just think you feel the difference even when you're doing
your like high lift from, Parterer like you've got to
feel like a difference in how you're moving. Bodies, no.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Probably not a yees oh, jeez but nobody can defend,
it know?

Speaker 5 (13:55):
It, NO i, yeah very very. WELL i know it.
Well the other thing that you, know people In greco
probably are pretty familiar, with but not everybody, knows is
that you know for it seems, LIKE i guess you'd

(14:16):
have to tell me the timeline when this really like
kicked into high. Gear but you started taking on At
army a much more prominent training, role leadership, role and
running you, know their training block and running practices a
lot and so. Forth so the first QUESTION i have

(14:41):
with that is when did that all really? Start because
the first TIME i started hearing about it WAS i
guess probably probably after you twenty threes last YEAR u
twenty three trials or nationals or whatever you want to call,
it because that's What billy And justice were talking to
bout a. Bunch was how, like you, know you were

(15:02):
helping them and starting to you, KNOW i, guess you,
know train them lack of a better, term and then
it's just like it seems like that's become part of
your main gig. Here so like when did this all
start and how did it take on like such a
life to where you were basically getting everybody ready for
the senior trials a couple of weeks, ago.

Speaker 4 (15:25):
SO i think it's WHEN i went to a trip
With dalton to uh In may To. ISTANBUL i was
helping him out and then when we came back it
was nothing to do And billy And jessie was preparing
for The worlds for the, trials for their.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
TRIALS i think it was there right or before before.

Speaker 4 (15:51):
TRIALS i was trying to make them Because billy wasn't
a team for a, year a year or two with
us and didn't have, results so we won him to
him And juice like get get to the world. Team
it was there last year and my goal was Helping
billy to get to that. Team so when WHEN i

(16:14):
was the decision was like double kep didn't want to fund.
It billy's dead fund out trip to THE u twenty.
Threes so THEN i was like helping him out there
And billy dad was asking me to go with, them
so he found my way to to like the. Competition

(16:36):
SO i helped him out there and then we came
back after it was like, okay now we Have senior
role team trials and then we have our world Like
Senior worlds AND u twenty threes in the same, place
AND i Told, billy it's, like don't worry About he was,
like WHO i supposed to put as a?

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Coach, like who's going to go with me as a?

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Coach AND i told him Told, BILLY i was, like don't, Worry,
Billy i'm going to be in a senior team and
we're goin to find a way how to go, together
and you're gonna stay with me as a.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Partner so we was working through.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
That that's what, happened and after we came back From
worlds two weeks, later we Have Military worlds and me being.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Just like oldest in the.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Team SO i was telling the, guys helping out the
guys because we it's, like you, know sometimes like everybody's
go coaches going with the, athletes going back and, forth
back and, forth but nobody sees what's happening behind the,
scenes like when they, training when they like doing warm
ups before competition and somebody need, talk somebody need, hugs

(17:48):
somebody need like do something to, them you, know to
figure out what's going on with their. Head AND i
was like going around and knowing what they, like frustration
in their some of them just lost the. Match somebody
just about to go through the, match AND i was
helping out the team a little. Bit and there, too

(18:09):
coming back From, worlds we was talking to coaches and
coaches want, Me, sean want me to start, coaching like more,
coaching helping out the guys and let them prepare for
The April. Nationals and by that TIME i didn't know
IF i got to compete or. Not AND i wasn't

(18:30):
like preparing one hundred. Percent basically it was Like spencer
AND i was running practices and in some PRACTICES i
didn't even practice because like they have, partners and we
was going around the mat and helping out the, guys
and when somebody didn't have.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
A, PARTNER i was jumping, in you, know and it's
like the chance to.

Speaker 4 (18:53):
Chance that was like not often so BUT i was,
lifting was always doing, something and By APRIL i was, Like,
OKAY i might just. Wrestle why? NOT i, mean it's
not going to hurt.

Speaker 5 (19:09):
Me, Well, dan, Hurry i'm almost hesitant to ask you,
this but AND i know how you feel about domestic,
titles domestic selection and all, this But i'm sure you

(19:34):
are AWARE i would, well you know, what who knows
what you're aware? Of for crying out. Loud but it's
like you've been in every single best of three tournaments
available to you since you know, whatever twenty, sixteen which

(19:54):
was your First trials. Tournament, yeah and the only other
ath fleet who shares that, number as so far as
anybody can, tell in our history Is. Buyers do you know?
This are you aware of? This?

Speaker 2 (20:10):
No?

Speaker 5 (20:12):
Right SO I i should have IF i were going
to bring this, UP i should have come prepared with
the actual the actual. Statistic but let's see twenty Sixteen
Rio trials, final, right best of?

Speaker 2 (20:33):
Three, Yes.

Speaker 5 (20:37):
So starting in here it IS i will read this
because this was in five point move recap for the
day one of the. Trials is you made a best
of three final for a tenth straight time and twelfth time. Overall,
okay Only Dreamial buyers have qualified in more consecutive, years

(21:03):
because he made every trial's final series from two thousand
and one through twenty Twelve Olympic. Trials so here's the
here's the numbers for. You this is all the best
of threes that you qualified For april twenty, Sixteen april twenty,

(21:23):
Seventeen june twenty, Eighteen so That's world Teen Trials World
Team Trials may twenty. Nineteen, Obviously FINAL X june twenty,
Nineteen so that's two best of threes within a few
weeks of each. Other april twenty twenty, One Olympic, Trials

(21:49):
september twenty twenty, One World Team, Trials june twenty twenty,
Two FINAL X june twenty twenty, Three FINAL X april
twenty twenty, Four Olympic, Trials september twenty twenty, Four World Team,
trials and Then april twenty twenty, Five World Team. Trials

(22:11):
do you understand how off the charts impressed ive that?
Is or, no.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
It's for people who don't understand.

Speaker 5 (22:21):
Wrestling PROBABLY i understand wrestling pretty darn. Well every single
best of three that you could have been available for
you've performed in. It like you don't think that says
anything at. All there's people who don't ever make a
best of three year old Dark. Yeah, SEE i knew

(22:43):
it was almost half a mistake to bring that up
because the last, time the last TIME i did you
for the, podcast you were like you, said haul was.
LAUGHING i remember you said something, like let's be honest

(23:04):
to be number one in the. Country it's no not
a big. Deal let's be. Honest you said it just like.
That but it's, like, dude that's a crazy amount of
trial finals to be. In what do you think.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
It is if you look that? Way but it's like you, see.

Speaker 5 (23:23):
Here we go walking as.

Speaker 2 (23:25):
A statistic right now and you're going.

Speaker 4 (23:27):
Back but for, me it's Like I'M i guess for
everybody were preparing every, year, right so every year and
it's in the year it's only one competition basically like
final artics or.

Speaker 2 (23:41):
Whatever and it's.

Speaker 4 (23:43):
Only Because american stupid rules making that like three competitions
in row with same.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
People LIKE i can't, say, like, Oh i'm in the
final every. Time, yeah but you've been in every same
people every time over and.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
Over, oh come, On i'm.

Speaker 4 (23:58):
Not wrestling with different? People is every? Time is same,
people same last? Name look? Them how many TIMES i
wrestle those same?

Speaker 5 (24:07):
People, Yeah, OKAY i understand what you're trying to, say
but it's still a lot.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
Dark come, on, yeah the same.

Speaker 5 (24:15):
People it's not always the same, people not.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
Always BUT.

Speaker 3 (24:21):
I, mean, yeah instead of all those years being number,
one number two in the, country IF i have world,
medal that will help.

Speaker 5 (24:33):
Better, okay you, Know i'll understand THAT.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
I will change, that no. Problem all those years for one.

Speaker 5 (24:41):
Medal fair, enough fair. Enough, well let me ask you.
THIS i had Interviewed ellis the week of the, trials
week before the, trials AND i know that you and
him have had a very good and close relationship for

(25:02):
kind of a long, time and SO i asked, him,
like is it like kind of, awkward you, know to
Have ildar basically running the training yet like he's you,
know also in your bracket and that's and that's even
understanding that teammates wrestle each other all the time in
our country and like all, that but even, still it's

(25:22):
a different sort of, dynamic at least in my own
head it. Was and he actually admitted that it was
like for a period at least to him, Anyway maybe
not to, you but to him it was a little
bit different because you, know he he said something to
the Effect i'm not going to pull the exact, quote but,

(25:43):
like will you, know, YEAH i mean there's been a
little bit of distance between. Us this is. BUSINESS i
mean he went on to say, that, like you, know
you were running awesome training, sessions, practices but that, like
at least in the lead up to the. Trials for,
him there was like his mindset would say, like you, know,

(26:06):
yeah we're, friends but right, now like there's a little
bit of a little bit of space between. Us was
it like that for you or was it not on your?

Speaker 4 (26:14):
MIND i didn't consider this competition as it LIKE i
need to be in the team AND i need to do,
this this and. That this wasn't in my head for some,
REASON i don't. Know it wasn't for. ME i was,
LIKE i wasn't looking For ellis as an enemy or

(26:36):
as a.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
Guy WHO i need to compete.

Speaker 4 (26:40):
WITH i WAS i knew, him he knows, me and
in his, mind he was trying to be in the.
Team he was trying to prove, something you, know for.
Everybody he was the guy who was trying to cut
down to sixty. THREE i don't need to prove anything to.
Anybody this competition for, Me at least for, ME i

(27:02):
was like going through the competition and my mind was
relaxed AND i didn't stress out in any. MATCHES i was, like,
fine just go and do do what you can do the.

Speaker 5 (27:14):
Best how did you come out of that trials? Anyway
as far as physically were you banged, up bet or
were you just? Fine as soon as it was.

Speaker 4 (27:24):
OVER i wasn't even sore other than my. Face that
guy in the second match hit me hard like in
split a little, bit but other than, that it was.
Fine i'm telling, you sixty three is not hurting me at.
All it's, like body, WISE i feel way.

Speaker 5 (27:43):
Better how's your diet, changed if at? All like are
you eating a little more in conjunction with your weight training?

Speaker 4 (27:51):
PROGRAM i wouldn't Say i'm eating. MORE i think it's
like start lifting, more like more on.

Speaker 2 (28:02):
It you.

Speaker 4 (28:02):
Know that's why it's like start taking creating and protein
together and start. Lifting that's why weight is holding up
in my body because used TO i was LIKE i
was lifting same amount but less weight but same, amount
BUT i wasn't taking like enough creating and protein BECAUSE

(28:22):
i was like watching for my. Weight so that's why
weight wasn't holding on. Me so it was like water
weight every time it was like going. Easy but now
it's Like i'm building up to, it and it's like
now it was like.

Speaker 2 (28:37):
SOLID i would say solid sixty, five sixty, six and
then the rest is.

Speaker 5 (28:45):
Water so you feel basically better than you probably have
over the past couple of.

Speaker 4 (28:54):
Years, yeah because it's like way easier. Now So i'm
lifting feel like. Stronger and the same TIME i have
seen people WHO i, wrestle you.

Speaker 5 (29:06):
Know, YEAH i don't know how much this, Matters but
you looked it looked great, Physically like your arms are more,
jacked your back is a little, wider your leg's a little.
Thicker it was hard not to. NOTICE i thought you.
LOOKED i thought you looked more sixty three ish in
this tournament THAT i thought you looked in the. Fall

(29:28):
i'll put it that.

Speaker 4 (29:29):
Way, well in THE, nfl my weight was. SLOW i
was sixty four and it's like walking sixty four sixty.
Three and on the competition, DATES i THINK i was
eat dinner before AND i was.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
Still sixty three in the. MORNING i, was, wait how
is that? Possible, oh that's the.

Speaker 5 (29:52):
Dream that's the.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
Problem it's not a. Dream it's like it's not.

Speaker 4 (29:56):
Enough, Weaight and for this COMPETITION i actually have to
like cut it down a little, bit not a.

Speaker 2 (30:01):
Lot but it's LIKE i was watching WHAT i was.

Speaker 5 (30:04):
Eating oh, YEAH i know the. Phrase it's, like, yeah
just watching what you're.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
Doing, yes just a little little wash and nothing crazy.

Speaker 5 (30:15):
Coming up in fairly short, orders we'll get to this
and then we'll get to your new venture. Here but coming,
UP i guess pretty short order a, week week and
a half or whatever it, is is the trip To, Azerbaijan,
which since It's, azerbaijan it's not like it's a three day.

(30:36):
TRIP i mean it's a little. Significant like for you, yourself
how do you view this trip To, Azerbaijan because, like
on one, HAND i know how much you love training,
overseas especially overseas at a high level of environment, environment
which is what this is going to. Be but at

(30:58):
the same, time you're also now more than you ever
were even. Before you're someone who guys in the room
are looking to as like a like a, leader like
a like a like another coach, Basically so, like how
are you yourself looking forward To. Azerbaijan are you looking
forward to it insofar as just strictly through an athlete's,

(31:19):
lens like you can't wait to you, know train and
get all these live goes in with these, guys or
are you looking at it like, well you're also going
to probably be you, know helping some of the army
guys and even THE us guys in general throughout the,
camp like how are you looking at?

Speaker 4 (31:37):
It that's interesting question BECAUSE i was thinking about that.
TODAY i was, Like, okay What i'm going to do
WHEN i get to A serbajan train with? Them fully
like their, training but IF i am going to do
that as for what so If i'm not preparing for,
anything and at this, TIME i probably will be.

Speaker 2 (32:00):
Still like wrestling a little.

Speaker 4 (32:02):
Bit but looking for our guys what they doing because
they need, help and like our younger guys like another
need need some, help always need some, help always have,
questions always need adjustments like the same same as even
elis like older, guy but he still need adjustments like a.

(32:24):
Lot and we was working in our room and their, mistake,
well what we're seeing during the, practice what we're seeing
the during the PEN m, competitions what they did.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
Wrong so we was talking about it.

Speaker 4 (32:37):
And going, There we're going to see what they're going to,
do like because they when we're talking to as a bad,
coaches they told us they're going to be a cross.
Training it's going to be not only wrestling, wrestling but,
lifting running and all this stuff and some of some
of PRACTICE i probably will go on a mat and
wrestle with the guys some of them. Met when WHEN

(33:00):
i need to give attention to our, Guys i'm going
to stay and look for our guys also scouting doing the,
practices what they're doing in, practice lifting, wise or what we're,
missing you, know we LIKE i still need to play
like scouting game, too like to see what they're, doing

(33:22):
what we're not, doing you. Know that's that's the most
important THING i think with those cross, trainings to see
how the other countries is training, too Because i've been
there In Azzeba jaan With uzbegistan. TEAM i was traveling
there training with them and training always hard like with

(33:43):
them because they especially In may they have now they
come and coming back From russia right now and In
russia they did wrestling wrestling camp and now they have
cross training. Camp and this is what we need to
because there's good timing for us to learn how to do.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
Stuff and also we're gonna coming.

Speaker 4 (34:04):
Back we have our own camp here In, june so
it's going to be another cross training with the THREE
i think Three, Croatia ukrainians And georgians wants to come In.

Speaker 5 (34:17):
Hungary herp was.

Speaker 4 (34:20):
Talking About georgians. TOO i don't know, Why oh maybe
just today maybe. Hungry, yeah BUT i don't know how
many people are going to be, here but they want
to do a cross training as. Well so it's going
to be one camp going to another, camp and we're
going to be able to see the difference what the
other countries do because usually when you go To zagreb

(34:43):
and Now zagreb porch and train, there they only wrestling
and it's going to be like ten to twenty teams
and you, wrestle, wrestle wrestle every. Day you're not cross
training with. Them you're not doing what they're. Doing this
is a great time to see what they're. Doing scout,
like maybe we're not doing something what theyre.

Speaker 2 (35:04):
Doing we'll.

Speaker 4 (35:05):
See but as as for right, Now I'm i'm still
like want to train a little.

Speaker 5 (35:13):
Bit for.

Speaker 4 (35:14):
Sure i'm gonna get on the, mat put my hands
on Some World grims.

Speaker 2 (35:19):
There they have.

Speaker 4 (35:20):
Two of, THEM i think sixty sixty. Three So i'm
gonna put my hands for, sure BECAUSE i like to
piss their coaches off WHEN i WHEN i throw and
like in part or do something to. THEM i like
how they pissed off saying In russia like the.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Guys, oh how you can't lose to the? Guy, SEE
i was always funny to hear.

Speaker 5 (35:44):
That how About Spencer Thomas? Mango are you taking on
a larger? Role how has he enjoyed that as far
as taking the pressure off, him because from a, distance
that's what it's seems. Like it's probably done for, him.

Speaker 4 (36:01):
RIGHT i, HOPE i Hope i'm playing a good impact
on impact on taking.

Speaker 2 (36:10):
Like like a little part of his.

Speaker 4 (36:12):
Job but he's like he's so, busy busy with paperwork
in dou wcap with all different different staff, now like
he's not worried about, practice he's worried about putting different
like apex for the approval for the trip approval or
the other stuff where he don't need to be like

(36:35):
worry about but they're still doing. It but it's, LIKE
i think it's a question for him more for him
enough for.

Speaker 5 (36:43):
Me uh, yeah Well i'll get to that. EVENTUALLY i
guess that leaves us with the kind of a big.
Topic it was pretty well received, news IF i might,
say but that is you are now interested in venturing

(37:04):
out based upon, availability of, course but doing clinics and
camps and things like that AND i already know, this
but your heart is in the right place because like
your concern in part is not only trying to get

(37:28):
More american kids Into, greco but also the ones who
are at least sort of into. It you want to
help improve their, development you, know while we're on, it
and that is a huge. Topic is LIKE i, guess first,
off what would you, say like how did this come?

(37:50):
About like how did you decide that this is something
you wanted to? Do and also like layout if you
could your, vision like what you, like what you were
trying to, accomplish and how you might want to accomplish
it if you.

Speaker 4 (38:04):
Could so for all those YEARS i was competing, MYSELF
i was focusing on my wrestling career, only AND i was,
like didn't even see what's going on around. ME i
was like strictly focusing on What i'm doing every year after,
year and this chapter of my, LIFE i Think i'm

(38:29):
like kind of step back a little bit watching What i'm.
Doing but also WHEN i give, back AND i think
the best will be well describing that will be to
give back for, kids because kids learning if they learning,

(38:50):
right if they're learning right technique Rite greco if they
see the Right greco how it's supposed to, be maybe
they will be interesting thing more in, wrestling more in
like greco. Sport, also IF i can go to do
clinics and get message to the, coaches MAYBE i can

(39:14):
fix early mistakes what they've been. Doing MAYBE i can't
put impact on them, too explaining what they should, be
what criteria they should be looking, at or what position
they should be working on. More you, know it's like
as far as Like greco's, stance MAYBE i can show

(39:39):
some technique whether they haven't seen, yet you, know not
just throws and throws and lifts and all this. Stuff
not just, that but like, positioning like maybe on a
feed the stands or practice. Wise maybe they not running
like AS i, see like in my eyes it should

(40:01):
be that, way but they running.

Speaker 2 (40:03):
Differently everybody is running. Differently but this.

Speaker 4 (40:07):
MAYBE i can share My asian style. School that's What
i'm trying to, say they will be better.

Speaker 5 (40:14):
Idea, well here's WHAT i Would here's WHAT i would
definitely want to know is you're obviously aware that in
THE us kids are growing up wrestling folk style and

(40:36):
with that comes a lot of habits and tendencies that
are not aligned With greco in particular, positioning and so
knowing how these kids are brought, up how they're, developed

(41:01):
like you, WOULD i, guess have to have like a
baseline of how you would want to Translate greco positioning
And greco basics, fundamentals knowing that that's where they're coming.
From like they're going to come at you, with you,
know by and, large with you, know folk style, stances

(41:22):
and you're gonna have, TO i, guess find a way
to correct that and work with, them like in A
i would think a pretty thorough. Manner so like how
do you see? That like IF i were to bring you,
to you, know some club In New jersey and like
there's a bunch of really good folks style freestyle wrestlers

(41:44):
who have never done greco, before and you're watching them
kind of warm up and you, know maybe they're play
wrestling or maybe they're just drilling shots or, something but
yet they want to start getting Into. Greco, like how
would you begin that conversation with? Them like how would
you douce greco positioning to?

Speaker 6 (42:01):
Them i'll probably will start with exercises on the warm,
Up so run them through the good warm up get
them to the greco's stand and make them like walk in.

Speaker 2 (42:17):
That like my coaches was.

Speaker 4 (42:23):
Make me walk for like twenty to thirty minutes in,
stands like bend my knees and walk in the wrestling
stand without bending my. Back try to stay, COMFORTABLE i
mean try to like in wrestling in, general like everything
is opens. Up if you bend your, legs it's going

(42:44):
to open up like, more you can see.

Speaker 2 (42:46):
More your stand will be like way better start with the.

Speaker 4 (42:53):
Like slowly going to from like standing position like in
in the good in good, standing going to to one
one's start from the.

Speaker 2 (43:02):
Hand risk.

Speaker 4 (43:03):
Control it's like that kind of like little details is
gonna play the big.

Speaker 2 (43:09):
Game so not only just.

Speaker 4 (43:12):
Throws right, away because like how you start, wrestling you're
shaking hands and then you start reaching to the hand,
right so you start with risk. Control if you're not controlling,
risk probably they gonna do like underhooks and. Stuff so
that's why you're starting with risk. Control soon as you
grab that, wrist you're going, higher going to. Elbow now
you have tone. One now you have. Tie now like

(43:35):
after tone, one you have pull, push start like moving,
slowly but you like you LOADING i will show the
way how to put weight on the, arm not just
holding the arms to on one because people a lot
of people think like to on one is just holding the. Arm,
no it's the art of put pressure on that, arm but,

(43:58):
weight not by bending your, back by putting like by squatting.
Down you put whole weight and you make them your
opponents carry. You it's like carry you more, weight and
when they get, tired then it's gonna throws and all
those like positioning opens up because they start doing. Mistake

(44:23):
now you're moving from one side to another side and
you will have open throws and, stuff and it's like
that's how it should, be like by coaches like Describe
greco like slowly it's not just like oh am you
jumping and? Throwing, no it's it's.

Speaker 2 (44:41):
The, process you. Know it's like it's slowly.

Speaker 4 (44:44):
Processed but you have to start with the risk control
first and then you're going you going advancing and, advancing
and before before throwing people or before locking with the,
guy is the steps before.

Speaker 2 (44:59):
That so they need to know.

Speaker 5 (45:01):
It you brought up when you first when we were
first talking about, THIS i guess like last week or
whatever it was you brought up SOMETHING i thought was pretty,
interesting and it. Doesn't it's. NOT i don't think it's.
Typical i've been you, know involved in camps and clinics,

(45:22):
before And i've not seen it. Myself but you brought
up the idea of, assessments of evaluations of seeing kids.
Wrestle that way you can have like an understanding kind
of of where everyone is sort of at so that
you can maybe adjust the. Curriculum is is that something

(45:45):
that you're actually thinking of doing for people who bring you,
in like gathering people, up pairing them, off having THEM i,
GUESS i guess wrestle live or drill or something for.

Speaker 2 (45:58):
Just not just.

Speaker 4 (45:59):
Wrestle you put him to the positioning like you're showing.
Him you're showing the kids like positioning, First like it's
a lot of different positions right when you can wrestle
like underhog some one, once but the you will get
the understanding when you put them to the position like

(46:19):
even if they you're putting to one or under herk
and well like double under whatever position you put him,
in and you see how they wrestle off of that.
Position now you know what you're working. With because if
you've not seen that like, wrestle life is. Different so
because the when kids wrestle each other, life they wrestle way.

(46:40):
Different they know each, other they know what to. Expect
but when you put them to the like different positions
where they never been. Before Or i'll, say like like double, under,
right So i'll tell, you, like, okay you have double.
Under you lift your, partner and the other guy is

(47:00):
the defensive guy who don't have his feet on the.
Mat he already like off the. Mat he needs to
find a way how to not get. Scored or if
he gets, scored only two not four from that. Position
so now you know what you're dealing. With because like

(47:21):
if they bring me to the to the, clinic the
kids already wrestled.

Speaker 2 (47:25):
Before they're not they're not new in.

Speaker 4 (47:28):
Wrestling they already know how to, wrestle but only positioning
will show you how they.

Speaker 5 (47:35):
Wrestle do you have either in your mind or EVEN
i don't, know written down on a piece of paper
or anything like, that do you have like the basis
OF i, mean you don't have to give it. Away

(47:55):
i'm just, curious but do you have like the basis
of a curriculum that you would want to run Through
like so if let's say you have a three hour
block or two two hour blocks or however that is broken,
down like do you have an idea of what you're you,

(48:18):
know what a clinic would look?

Speaker 4 (48:20):
Like first of, all Like i've don't believe for long
practices BECAUSE i know the holding the kid attention more
than one and a half hour is.

Speaker 5 (48:34):
Hard you're saying that as a, father.

Speaker 2 (48:39):
As a, father as an.

Speaker 4 (48:40):
Athlete it is like whatever you want to tell, me
like if practice longer than one and a half, hour
like if it's longer than one and a half, hours
like one hour one and a half hour is, good
and rest of it is just like you're beating your
body and you not get the. Quality this is like zero,

(49:01):
quality zero. Information like. Process it's like IF i run the,
clinic is the practice is not going to be longer
than two, hours and it's going to be like technique
and all that stuff during in one and a half.
Hour and now that half an, Hour i'll probably like
spend for, answer answer the questions what they have about the,

(49:25):
session and also show them how to, stretch show them
them how to cool down after, practice and show them
a couple of exercises so they can use.

Speaker 2 (49:34):
It so also for the.

Speaker 4 (49:38):
Curriculum what you're, saying LIKE i have in my, mind
like WHAT i wanted to, DO i write down in
my like little.

Speaker 2 (49:47):
JOURNAL i will take it with.

Speaker 4 (49:49):
ME i always like WHAT i have in my, mind
like the, Ideas i'm write it, down so WHAT i
want to do and how it's going to. Be but
it's always like when you go through the practice and
you try to, like, Oh i'm going to focus for
six minutes on this, move and another six minute is

(50:10):
going to be on this, move and that is, Good
Like i'm trying to break it down by like six
minutes or. Whatever but it's always ended up being a
little bit longer than six, minutes just because some kids
don't understand, something some kids have more, questions or some
people have this this and.

Speaker 2 (50:27):
That like it's not going to be, perfect like you've
write it. Down you always like adjusting for the during the.

Speaker 5 (50:36):
Process is this something that you plan, on let's, say
doing like just going, Forward like this isn't just for
twenty twenty, five, right like you plan on this is
going to be a part of what you, do not
just now but in the. Future is this is going

(50:58):
to be a mechanism for you to give back to
this particular style in this country is kids development, camps
clinics and whatever. Like are you like now considered to
be like an open door for people to come find.

Speaker 1 (51:14):
You, YEAH i would say, so because Like i'm still
doing like, you still have your, career still have my
career as the chapter is not closed. Yet, Also i'm
helping out in DOUBLE kf as an athlete coach to,
athlete and on my free time when we don't have

(51:37):
anything in the season going, on or if a, team
like IF i have like a little bit of free,
TIME i can definitely go in do clinics and. Stuff
it's not going to hurt, me but it's going to
benefit kids and the other clubs or the coaches who
running the practices for.

Speaker 2 (51:58):
Kids and also it's going to be good for.

Speaker 4 (52:01):
Me it's gonna be good for me in the future
because you get you know who you're gonna work. With
if they started like picking up and bringing reco in
a different, Level i'm gonna work with with that material,
later you.

Speaker 5 (52:22):
Know, well then one last, THING i guess it's two,
part BUT i would think that part of this, is you,
know time. Permitting and this is also with understanding your
schedule concerns coming, up like we just talked. ABOUT i
mean There's Asba jehan and then that's you, know not

(52:43):
a short, trip and then it's coming back and a
little bit of a, respite and then there's the you know. Whatever,
however many free teams coming in For june. Camp BUT
i would think that like the interests here has to
do With fargo and the, duels at least a big

(53:05):
chunk of, IT i would imagine would be right like
to potentially assist a couple of locations with Their fargo.
Prep and so the second part to that, is and
you could go ahead and step over me if you
like on that. One but the second part is have
you ever really Watched fargo LIKE i? Was you, know,

(53:27):
well as you AND i know each, other we've never
really broken that, Open like do you see how much
improvement can potentially be made For fargo? Kids like what
is your impression Of fargo in? General as?

Speaker 2 (53:40):
Well you'd be honest like a couple like this year last.

Speaker 4 (53:47):
Year last, YEAR i was Watching keiknu son restling In.
Fargo the, bregets how big it, was the. BRUGGEST i
didn't realize like they have like more thanty people in a.

Speaker 2 (54:00):
BRACKET i was, like.

Speaker 4 (54:03):
Wow that's so many kids Wrestle. Greco where we start losing.
THEM i start Asking, spencer Like, spence, like when we
start losing kids we, have like you seventeen, worlds you
fifteen world? Champs why they? Disappearing and he was, like
colleges pay money to.

Speaker 2 (54:25):
Recruit kids. Nowadays LIKE.

Speaker 4 (54:29):
I watched, THEM i was, Like, oh that's pretty talented kids,
here even like not so many coaches Training, greco but
they still talented. Kids they know how to. Wrestle it's
all they need is not lose.

Speaker 2 (54:46):
That like.

Speaker 4 (54:50):
The, style you, know not lose willing to Wrestle. Greco
that's the the big. Point AND i Watched, farga not
not all the. MATCHES i don't have like favorite. Athletes
and people were saying like in, wrestle some guy wrestled

(55:12):
For rudis or, something signed big, contract not of WHAT
i was telling about it.

Speaker 2 (55:17):
TODAY i was, like you don't know who he.

Speaker 4 (55:19):
IS i was like, no and he was like he
just signed like some million of dollars contract With. Rudis
and it was like some young. KID i was, like,
DUDE i supposed to know. Him he was, like it was, like.

Speaker 2 (55:33):
Interesting you don't even know.

Speaker 4 (55:35):
HIM i was, like, NO i don't BECAUSE i was
like so, focusing LIKE i, said like In greco and
no focus on freestyle or folk. Style it's just but
but the general WHAT i wanted to do because they.
TRIED i know they the coaches tried to bring kids

(55:58):
for the bring me for the for their camp BECAUSE
i want they, wanted like the kids Wrestled greco. Better
they think they're going to pick it. Up But I'm
i'm sure it's like in three practices for, practices you're
not gonna learn how to Wrestle, greco but at least
you will have an idea what and how you can do.

(56:22):
This MOST i was like this what was driving? Me
so IF i can put in their coach's mind what
they can do and how they can, run maybe they
will affect kids.

Speaker 5 (56:36):
Later and that was ild our happies Off and that
last point right. THERE i hope you caught it for
those who might be interested in bringing him in for,
clinics be it sorts the end of the, spring early
summer or later on in the, summer however that might

(56:58):
work out or course to everyone with, development that's the clincher, is,
yes the clinics are for the kids to improve at
their greco fundamentals and so, forth but it's also more
importantly for the, coaches for those coaches who would be
willing to humble themselves a little. Bit and you Bring

(57:19):
ildar in and, you as the, coach also learn from.
Him you get insights from, Him you get ideas for training,
plans what should they be? Doing, okay as far as
getting a, baseline because that's what it is going to
take in The United, states is an ongoing process for
the coaches to get involved when it comes to athlete,

(57:44):
development even if they are folk style. Coaches but they
go and they train kids up for the stuff like
duels and fargo and things like, that and they're only
involved in the. Spring so be. It if they have
a better baseline from which to operate when it comes
to running, practices then just by extension the, kids even

(58:07):
if again they're only into it for the spring and
summer for, fargo they are going to have a better
grasp of foundational mechanics and positioning FOR grek And. Roman
and that is part of What ildar is looking to
bring to the, table and of, course OBVIOUSLY i recommend,

(58:29):
him AND i think it's great that he is interested
in giving back to the sport this. Way SO i
hope people get in touch on. THEM i hope people
take advantage of it BECAUSE i think it could be.
Big we need that kind of imprint from our, athletes
our top athletes who want to start imparting education both

(58:51):
on the age group level and also to the. Coaches
SO i think it's. Fantastic and what else is going?
On oh, well as Ill dar, mentioned The United states
basically the national team a little less in the national,
team but the world team and several others Including ildar
who came in second at The World team trials To Elis,

(59:11):
coleman are going To. Azerbaijan they're going to be there
for just about the better part of a couple of,
weeks and then everything starts ramping up pretty quick because
they get back and then there's big camp In Colorado
springs that Is, Croatia ukraine And. Hungry they get done
with that, camp and then the summer just kind of

(59:33):
flies after that because you're going to have let's see
all summer filled with, TRAINING i guess and ranking series
and all. That but, look that's STILL i mean sort
of a ways. Away we'll cover. That And i'd be

(59:56):
remiss if not to mention The PanAm, championships even though
it was a couple weeks. AGO i don't know who's
listening to, this who doesn't get THEIR greco information on,
time but obviously for those who might be, aware and
for the especially for those who might not. Be The United,
states of, course stopped through The PanAm championships In. Mexico

(01:00:19):
it was a. Whitewash it was six, golds two, silvers
and one. Bronze fourteen of The americans wins were technical.
Falls they also had three, pins seven seven decisions IF
i could Speak, english and one win by a four
to fIF that matters to. You jaden Rainey u seventeen
world champion obviously on the world. Team he got. Gold

(01:00:42):
he only had one, match but he Checked. Mexico the
ever Popular Max black got his First PanAm. Gold he
TechEd three out of four. Guys ellis took, silver had,
won he, had you know in the, final he had
he was winning four nothing and just fell apart for.
Him he'll be. Okay Austin nutter lost in the first

(01:01:04):
round To Andres Montano, arroyo who's been around for kind
of a, while certainly and really tough. Guy but that
is a match That i'm Sure nutter wants. Back Alex
Sancho gold just decimated. Everybody Camaba gold pretty much the same.

(01:01:25):
Thing he had tough match obviously with world champion and
multi time Medalists Arson jewefilakian From armenia who not wrestles For,
argentina and that was Apparently Jeuwe failakian's last. MATCH i,
mean we'll, see but that's what it. Was being billed

(01:01:45):
As Becca. Miloshveli you twenty Three world silver last year
he got gold two and oh he only had two.
Matches it was a lightpool at eighty two, kilos but
Still Peyton jacobson he had another supersative, performance IF i might,
say because he lost in the first round To Luis
Avendanna rojas From venezuela and anybody who knows the Pan

(01:02:08):
am landscape sort, OF i, mean you've got to be
familiar With. Avendona he's been around for a long time
and he's a, really, really really tough wrestling. Athlete he's
an excellent athlete and just to his second period parterre,
STUFF i guess whatever it. Was but either, Way peyton
lost a close decision to him in the first. Round

(01:02:28):
because eighty seven kilos was not a regular bracket with
a round of, sixteen, quarterfinal, semifinal it was virtually round
robin pool until the, semifinals and So peyton had another
shot and he went and Steamrolled. Peru and then he
had a guy, WHO i guess at this point kind

(01:02:51):
of flies under the, radar this guy Named Sarsruko kodzakoff
From russia who now wrestles For brazil in case you
haven't been noticing a trend with rash starts competing for different.
Countries but, Nevertheless kozakov is you, know he's kind of
a beast and he has you, know he's just a tough.
Wrestler he's just, aggressive he's wears on. Ye he's excellent from.

(01:03:18):
Top he's got the street cred, too because he's been
a finalist at The russian. Nationals HE i think he
won a military world. Title he's done a lot of. Stuff,
anyhow as far AS i was, CONCERNED i thought that
that was the most important matter For peyton in the entire.
TOURNAMENT i didn't care what happened after, that But peyton
got a four piece on him early in the first

(01:03:38):
period and then wound up WINNING i think something like
five to. Three and, yeah and Then peyton won his next,
match and then he Has Avin donna in the, final
a return, bout and he beat him. UP i don't,
know six nothing shut him. Out Young Michael. FOY i
say young just because he's just now starting a scene your.

(01:04:00):
Career but, nevertheless first senior international medal for, him which
was a. Bronze you start off, against you, know world
Champion Gabriel rosio From, cuba and after that he dropped
a tough match To, argentina but he won. Out after,
that he went too and two in the, Tournament Calton schultz,

(01:04:20):
silver two and. One he lost in the finals to
multi time world Medalist Oscar Pino heinz From, cuba who
would have been number one For cuba years and years,
ago except for the fact that the most Decorated olympic
wrestler in history was well always waiting in the wings
to pop in a tournament or, two Mainly olympics at this.

(01:04:44):
