Speaker 1 (00:24):
Welcome to Flames then Filtered, hosted by Brad Rude, talking
Flame Talkie every week. Kyle.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Good to have here, always a pleasure even when times are.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
That doesn't have to wake you up.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Okay, well, I just not long ago watch the Minnesota
While defeat the Dallas Stars, and I took going it
on my sales a little bit because despite the fact
that I'm emphatically saying we're not making the playoffs, of
course I still want us to make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
So me too. I feel like it's like this week's
been like alive dead and now dead again, and it's
like a Teeter dodder. This week it's been. It's been crazy.
I guess, like last night when I after that game
got over and I was heading to bed, I just
all I could think of was like, you know, at
least we're like still watching like meaningful hockey. Well, you know,
(01:16):
there's probably a lot to be happy with.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
I guess yeah, for the most part. And we probably
loted that effet quite a few times, which just it's
funny when you mentioned it like on X and stuff,
because other fans like, oh, we're doing so much better
than we're supposed to. It's like we're not saying we
don't appreciate what's going on. That's not the point at all.
In fact, it entirely misses the point. The point is
it sucks to be so so close, and I likely
miss out right.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
You know the Colorado game, you know, this week since
we last Hawk, we beat Colorado in a shootout three
to two, a game that, oh man, the Flames had
no chance. I thought that they barely touched the pock
the first fifty minutes of the game, like, literally barely
touched it. Somehow, the fourth line drags us out of
(02:05):
the mud, and UH gets a goal for Lomberg and Clap.
I can't believe I'm saying that to UH send us
to a shootout. And then Sharon Govic of all people,
scores and we get our two points, and so all
of our hopes are are back there. Right, I mean,
everything's good. I thought I felt better, didn't you feel better?
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Moderately, I'm like, what's the what's the right word for this? Yeah, moderately.
I mean it's been such a it's like it's been
such a yellow like like you said, roller coaster.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Right, Well, then you know, then Utah, And I'm like Okay,
like this should be a win, and then you know,
we we it's a normal Utah performances team is they're
awful against Utah and it just goes out and it's
three to one and it's super lost points. And this
is the night I kind of was like, all right,
(02:58):
we're we're dead. We're dead. Yep. That night really really hurt.
I just we had the goal. I don't know, you
want to get into the Let's talk about the Anahem
game first and we'll talk about the the crazy goal stuff.
But then Anaheim comes to the Dome and we handle
(03:19):
him in a game where I didn't We didn't even
it was four to one, so it was like we
weren't scrambling at the end like we usually do and
a little too late. Were you feeling that? Also?
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yeah? Well, I mean Kaudre scored like what like fifteen
seconds into the game or something like that. Yeah, it's
kind of a good omen. Not something we're used to
at all. If we had more that we'd be in
a playoff spot, quite frankly.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Well, and then every time we score four goals, and
then last night against Vegas we get down two to
nothing and I do the obligatory tweet where I said
I would love to have faith that we could score
more than two tonight, but I don't think we can.
And I wanted to be wrong later and say I'm
(04:02):
an idiot, I'm wrong. But that didn't happen, as we
get goals from Handley and Coronado tie the game. But
in overtime just a goofy, goofy goll off, it hit
off Weiger and then like over the shoulder of Wolf
from behind the net and just not not good, not.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Good, no, no, it's uh. That was a tough one
to swallow, really really tough one to swallow because especially
after the first payer were Vegas just dominated them. It's like, okay,
well now this is gonna go. And then they fought back,
of course, and we just I guess that's a great
segue because we just have horrible, horrible, horrible puck luck.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
The hockey gods have not been in the Flames favor
this year.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I don't you know, I take a little bit of
issue with that term, probably because I'm so sick of it,
but you know, with regards to the Flames. But it's like,
and not to show any because everybody says it, and
I've said it, but it's like we keep talking about
the hockey gods. It's just like man like it's certain time.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Maybe I'm wrong in that, maybe the hockey guys haven't
been in our favorite the last couple weeks. But we've
had a lot of positives this year that we've went
over those but and will again when the season is done.
But I this this line stuff is madening.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Well yeah, and that's the thing. Most of the hockey
god uh usage pertains to pucks going in, puck's not
going in, weird bounces, uh, stuff of that nature. I mean,
we have a lot of positives this year, but it
comes to like incremental things change the course of a game.
We have had the worst luck barn on any team
in all of hockey, never mind professional hockey. And I'd
(05:46):
love for somebody to show me a team with worse luck,
Like find me one junior college. You know, Banham triple A.
I don't care throw it at me.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
I want to talk about the goal line thing because
it had me fired up. Like I will agree, based
off footage that I saw, I had a hard time
seeing white between the line. But I need to preface
that with the comment that has me shaking my head
the most this week. This is a multi billionaire, billion
(06:19):
dollar lead. These cameras are four feet from the ice.
This is the best we can do for technology. Why
is it so blurry? Like? I'm pretty sure if I
take my iPhone to the top of the crop bar
that we get better.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
I'm certain. Wait, well, hang on, hang on hand what
what what version of the iPhone do you have?
Speaker 1 (06:40):
I don't know, I'm cheap, like, probably a thirteen.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
I don't know, I got a fifteen. We'll use mine.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Okay, well, my thirteen is going to be better than that.
Look guaranteed, guaranteed, I asked my wife. I'm like, are
we like using like I asked her if we were
using her gramm as ninety eight years old? I said,
And she still uses those like freaking disposable came and
I said, are we using your grandma's disposable camera on
top of these? Netsy, You're like, why is this so bad? Like?
(07:06):
How so grainy and so crappy? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (07:11):
But even then it let me jump in on this
because even then, as crappy as it is, we can
still see white around the entire circumference of the puck.
We can still see it like and and that's been
the case with the last couple. Now I realize summer inconclusive. Now.
Ryan Pinder made a funny comment, you know about the
(07:31):
flames are like the very best at getting like the
puck like one millimeter over the goal line or some
of that effect. And it's true. It's like, man like,
can you just shoot the puck over these pads quick
jamming it into the pad, because now like there's there's
this we may as well call the flame zone. It's that.
What does that mean? Well, it means a little you know,
piece of ice between the goal, these toes and the
goal line, because we find in every goddamn time.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
I do, Like I thought the one in Utah was
a little bit more like over the line last night.
Maybe it wasn't so mad last thing. So that well,
that's gonna be goalie interference. Even if they're they're not
calling this one. There were in the crease. We're just
it's not getting it called.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
There's so many, there's so many, I can't distinguish which
one was from which game. I don't know anymore. That's
how bad it's gotten.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
I know, what's the Dallas game, the Utah game, the
Vegas game, and the cameras are equally crappy and multiple arenas.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Yeah, I think they coulda they could a. Balk By
went to Costco for those cameras and they should have returned them.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Well, they went to like tim or what's that website.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
That I bought a bunch of stuff off team once
and literally threw it all out. Every bit of it
was garbage. I've bought some good stuff on there too,
but there was one order that I threw the entire
thing ed was the biggest waste of money ever.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
I have not ventured down that road yet.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Oh, don't waste your time or your money for that matter.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Oh Lord, to talk about the playoff rates before we
get into the other the stuff.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Yeah, the more the more certain stuff. Yeah, yeah, I
mean listen, Yeah, sure, I mean we need to, of course,
because uh, it kind of makes me think of The
Simpsons when Homer's crusted the clown and he's doing the
children's birthday party and they're beating up the Hamburglar and
(09:24):
they're beating him up in Ralse crying. It's like stop,
he's already dead, and it's like that's how I kind
of feel about the flames, Like we're just reaching and
reaching and you know, if you look at the math,
it can still it's quite conceivable. It can happen. Yes,
but it's gonna require a lot. It's gonna like six
and oh right, that's basically what we have to do.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Well, I don't know, let's let's let's dive into this
a little more. You know. First of all, I want
to say, like, did anybody see Saint Louis rolling off
twelve straight? Because that's how we were chasing. Our team
has won six two and two and have lost eight
points to them, No, not that many.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
We've reached the stage of delirium because we're laughing at
how ridiculous this is.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
We we've lost. It's it's a it's a ton like seriously,
like they're like Edmonton's more in our reach than Saint
Louis Is.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
It doesn't make any sense. I mean, I work with
a guy who's a huge Blues fan I think I
mentioned before, Sean, and he's like just having the time
of his life with this, right, and what a time
for a team to get hot. I mean even they've
been a playoffs about to care them menum into a playoff.
Wund'll be fantastic.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
But yeah, they're waiting for the wheels to fall off.
And I don't know that they are going to fall off, but.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
No, they finally, they finally put it all together and
they're they're pretty deep team anyway, So you're good for them.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Yeah, I mean they're they're rolling. But right now, as
it's as it stands, Calgary sits Minnesota is the only
team we can catch. We're six back and Minnesota holds
the tiber Now we do have two games in hand,
and we are recording this on Sunday afternoon, so Sunday
in the Western Conference is pretty much gone. That matters.
(11:10):
Minnesota did beat Dallas today three to two in overtime,
and that's two points from Minnesota that I can't say,
nail in the coffin, But like the coffin's clothes, we're
just waiting to nail it down. Is that bad to say?
Speaker 2 (11:28):
No? Not at all, not at all.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Now, Minnesota, what does Minnesota have left? So they play
Wednesday San Jose, Friday in Calgary, then they go to Vancouver.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
They have.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Anaheim to end the season, so they have four games
left YEP, and Calgary has six games left, which include
some very favorable matchups with let's see here, we got data,
we on here, I'm a week ahead of it. We've
(12:10):
got Monday nights in San Jose, two Wednesday night in Anaheim, Minnesota,
the big game we talked about Friday, and then San Jose,
Vegas and LA some more winnable games, but then a
couple of.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Really the problem. The problem is the Minnesota game is
going to be tight, and it's going to turn into
a three point game, is my fear.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
I I would be willing to bet that there's more
chance of that being a three point game than a
two point game. And if it becomes a three point game,
We're done. We're done.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Absolutely have to beat them in regulation, met mind and else.
She just listened, that has to go, right, So.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Now I think we would have to win all the
other games. We could probably lose one more game, not
the Minnesota game.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Yeah, but just a mad and if we didn't, how
cool will that be? Right? Right? Right?
Speaker 1 (13:05):
I mean it'd be great. You know, I'm sitting here
and I'm I don't want to say either one of
us are being negative about this. I think probably realistic
realists about this problem.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
We've been so much more negative than this. This is nothing,
this is borderline.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Positively, we've been positive about this team the last couple
of weeks and and how you know, and honestly, let's
talk with that. We're six too and two and we've
had good goaltending, we've had a slight uptick and scoring.
I can't say a slight ever, so slight.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Big time.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
But I do have a bit of bad news. Is
money Puck Who's I don't know if it's accurate or not.
I like thinking it is. It's not good today. Boy,
it just went down to eight point nine percent.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
It's in Vegas.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
It's got Minnesota at ninety one point three, and Calgary
dropped to eight point nine percent. To our friendly fans
over in Vancouver, you're at one point three. So good
luck with that one.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah, Well, I mean the reality is, look how much
those percentages change if Calgary wins the next game in
regulation Minnesota loses there some regulation.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
Right, Isn't that something though?
Speaker 2 (14:13):
It really make a swing big time.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
We'll go to twenty five percent with that with those
two points, yeah, because Minnesota, if they lose their next game,
they only have three remaining after that. Yeah, and I
always look at this. You know, I think I put
out a message this week. I'm sticking here in the
world word games in hand too.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Well, actually I meant to ask you because I didn't
even look. What is the tiebreaker? The Minnesota holds.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
More wins they currently if I look at the standings,
they have forty two wins. We have thirty six wins.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Yeah, see this is again and if you look at
up Actually I'm gonna look at this up right now,
but this is somebody mentioned this on acts. I forget
who it was now, But how remember when the Flames
are awesome in overtime andro years?
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Yeah, like awesome.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Well we're pretty good this year over time. Oh my lord,
just as I suspected. It's worse than I suspected. Calgary
is tied for the most overtime shoot losses in the
league with Vancouver. Really yep, thirteen, So they're tied with
(15:23):
all the playoff teams.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
And oh, I got to right in front of me here.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Okay, this is a really interesting stat Actually it may
come as no surprise to people who pay more attention
than I do. Evidently, but every single team in a
playoff spot in both conferences is single digit overtime shootout losses.
The Canadians have nine, for example, the Capitals have nine.
Everybody like, that's it, that's unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Hey, is it bad for me to say that when
I look at that thirteen on there, that I'm this
year like, oh man, at least we got a point.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
But that's what I said in the line show, and
and I'm gonna point at you for those of you
watching a YouTube, So this is really emphatic of me.
The Flames did it again. I brought this up in
the last show and again last night they lose to
Vegas and Calgary. What do you think they tweeted? Brad?
What'd they post on Facebook? Got a point? It's not
good enough. Not good enough.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
Points matter, two points matter, not one. I mean you
know what, you can't.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
You can't have thirteen shootout overtime losses. You can't.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
We'll defend him in this one and this. If Minnesota
loses today, a point last night would have worked, wouldn't
have been ideal, would have worked.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
You still can't have thirteen of them. It's brutal, brutal.
I never slammed my fist on my desk during this show.
That's how anger I am about this.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
So how do you that's not like we sit here like,
I mean, if you're the coaching staff and you're seeing that, like,
what are you what are you saying? Are you saying
like are you happy as a coaching staff that we're
in that many games? Or are you like why are
we not winning in overtime? I'll tell you why we're
not winning overtime. We don't have superstars.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Well yeah, And the other problem I think is that
they're playing for a point frame way too often because
they don't have all the time. I don't have Yeah,
I don't have the stat right here, but I think
if you look, Calgary's probably played as many or close
to as many overtime games as anybody else this year.
They keep trying to hang on to that tie to
get that first point. And it's a terrible strategy. But
(17:25):
like you said, you don't have the star power to
win out overtime.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
But we did did. I mean, half of the thing
is just hang on, let's get a point. Like that's
the attitude, like it is.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
It's terrible. Can you imagine we almost saw the antithesis
of that last night, if Backlin had been able to
score in that breakaway.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
He was so gassed. Like I'm not defending him because
I didn't think he was very good last night. You
know who else I didn't I think was good last night,
And this is very rare, and I'm definitely not going
to pick on him because I'm a big fan of
his lately. Coleman looked atrocious last.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Night, coming off one of his best games of the season.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
In the game, I know, is that not crazy? Like
he just couldn't even skate no back when when he
did get that breakaway, he was so gassed and I thought, oh,
there's no way he's scoring this.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Oh yeah, not even a chance he was. Klapka was
really good. Conversely, Klapka has been really good lately.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Let's talk about the fourth line. So we get an
outburst the fourth line Colorado. We get basically two points
in Colorado when we had no business and the fourth
line was out there like literally every other shift. And
last night I was like, is it just me here
as a fourth line out every other shift? And we
almost got burned because of it too, because they were
not as good last night. But Klapka, I do think
(18:39):
has been very good.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Very I mean, he's massive, right, but his ability to
use his size to protect the puck has been just
phenomenal to watch.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
So if I told you that he's our fourth line
right winger next season, are you upset? I'm good with it.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
I'm super happy about it.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Yeah, I was right, told you. Rooneys are center four
fine center.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
No. Now, granted he has been much better in the
last week, but it's too little, too late. He's not
gonna be younger. We have better options in the system
of time to move on. And then at Lomberg. I
said this in the last show. I like Lomberg. I
love what he brings the locker room and most nights
to the team, but I don't think he should be
playing all of these two games.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
I am fine having him on the roster, but he's
got to be he's got to be an up and
down guy, and we're paying him too much to be
an up and down guy. I still look at that
salary and I'm like, yeah, I know we want to cup. Yeah,
he didn't even play every game in the finals, Like,
(19:44):
I don't know, I don't know. We were quick to
open the pocketbook on that one, though, weren't we.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Yes, And I understand why because they're looking for some
guidance for the younger players. But still it's that fourth line,
despite a much better they've been, and clap because the
reason it's been so much better.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
In my mind, he's been a game change, I mean,
because I can't believe I'm saying a fourth lineer is
a game changer, but he he has. He's been very good,
and I've actually like tentatively penciled him into the fourth
line next year. I don't like him in any other spot.
I don't think he's like gonna like become a third
(20:24):
line winger that scores for us. I don't. I don't
think that. But I like what he's what he's bringing
bringing to the table.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
I could see him maybe assended to the third line
if he continues to play well, but it's not something
that I'm expecting necessarily. I mean, ever since he had
his conversation with Dr mcginla five six weeks ago, he
definitely turned a corner as a player. Yeah, but he's
he's an asset now. He's an important asset to this
team which previously weren't really sure what he was so well, how.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
Much how much do you miss miss Connor's Are.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
You a lot? Did you see me tweet last night?
I missed him?
Speaker 1 (21:00):
Yeah, I brought it up, dude, Okay, that's.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
What I thought. I he's hey, listen. Like part of
that also stems from Frost and Faarby Frost in particular,
that has just completely disappeared.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
Do you think he disappeared?
Speaker 2 (21:15):
I'm not at all happy with this game of LA.
I don't think he's pretty much the table at all.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
I feel like he's like super dynamic. But for some reason,
it just never he had a game I can't remember.
Was it the Anaheim game that he hit the post
like five times? Or was that the Colorado one of
the games. Maybe it was maybe his last week. Maybe
I'm a week off, but there was a game I
know he just like had the polst like three times.
(21:40):
He was all over the place. He was really good,
and I this guy is just this guy fits in
perfectly with this team. He struggles to score like he's there,
he's making plays, he's he's creating chances. He just is
snake bit right now and I'm converting right.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
Yeah big time. Well, I mean a lot of the
team is right Huperto's gone ice cold at a terrible,
terrible time.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
Yes, and he had a oh he had a chance.
I think it was last Nance game. He had a
chance early on and should have shot and ended up
dishing off. And I'm just like, oh, you can't dish
off there. You have to shoot that puck. This team
can't score, we need to shoot. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Yeah, I was really excited for him at thirty goals.
I don't see it happening now, but we'll see, we'll.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Talk that Zari could be back by the end of
the regular season. I don't know. I don't know that
what's good right now. I almost feel like shelfing them.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
And well, that's kind of what that's what I said
last week. Let's kind of wrested on him. I mean,
I just I don't unless you're gonna be in the playoffs,
it comes back before the start of the playoffs. I'm
not really interested in seeing another regular season version of Sara.
I'd rather rest.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Yeah, I'm with you on that.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
As much as I miss him, I just I don't
feel it's worth the risk at this point. But that's
up to the team, of course. Speaking of up to
the team, So they have made numerous moves and decisions
of late. The first one that we should jump on
is id Oar Sounyev, Russian prospect has signed is with
the team wearing forever Flames zach Ronaldo's number thirty six.
(23:15):
Do you think that we see him in a game
for the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
No, Okay, gosh, that's awful to say that, isn't it?
Because I want to, Like I want to. I just
I feel like we're gonna be four points, four points,
four points, you know, maybe it'll be a Dustin Wolf
scenario where the last game against La he gets in right, Like,
I just I feel like this team all year has
(23:40):
just stayed just at that level where there's hope, right,
And I want I've wanted that because believe me, I'm
I'm I'm leading the line or for wanting to be
in the playoffs, right like I I want We're we
can't tank now, we're too many, we don't have any time,
so like we want as well try to get in
the playoffs. And boy, I'm praying for a miracle this week.
(24:02):
But I don't see, like I don't know from what
I've seen this year with Huska and his decisions. I
highly do't it. He puts in a twenty twenty three
third round pick in who is how old is this kid?
Twenty years old? Nineteen years twenty? He's twenty twenty. Yeah,
(24:24):
I don't know. I mean maybe the last game, but
I guess we'll see. I mean, he's exactly two years
younger than Coronado. Like Cornado came in at the exact
same point. It'll be interesting, you know, it'll it'll it'll
be interesting to see where this kid goes. But they're
burning a year of his ELC right away. I don't
(24:47):
know whether that's good or bad. I guess there's I've
heard arguments on both sides there.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
Yeah, but the thing is about ELC is whether or
not you're burning year. Typically it's kind of frowned upon
because people worry about the development and or so about
burning up you know, that cheap one of those cheap contractors.
But I think in a case like Sunniyev, who is
really really good along the board's really crafty player, I
think because they have such a glut of prospects now
and more coming, they want to fast track what they
(25:14):
have in him. M because he's been with the organization
a little bit longer than some of the other you know,
shiny new toys that we have, so it doesn't really
bother me. But I mean, I think the fact that
they brought him in, I think they do intend on
playing it, but probably only in the context of once
cirliminated from contention, because they want to experienced guys like
the others are already in the team playing until such
(25:35):
time as the games no longer matter. Much like you
said about Dustin Wolf when he came in, right.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
Yeah, I mean I hope that. I don't know. I mean,
I am almost feel like I would have been happy
to see him last night, but I guess to throw
him into but I don't know.
Speaker 2 (25:54):
He was.
Speaker 1 (25:54):
He was a really good player for you Mass And
the last guy I remember coming out of the league
are coming out of U MASS stepped into the league
was cal mccarr. So let's see what happens here.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Yeah, I think it's definitely worth a look. The other
big name. And I'm not gonna say I broke this
because Elliott Fraeban's already been talking about it, of course,
but I did confirm today and by the time this drops,
it'll likely be well known that Zaan PreK is joining
the Flames and is traveling. I don't know if he's
travel to meet them in Calgary or to meet them
in San Jose, but he is going to be joining
(26:24):
the team for the remainder of the season. There's a
lot of hype around him. Some people are being a
bit dismissive about it. Some people might be over hyping him,
but if you watch this kid play like there's a
reason he's the first defenseman of the HL since Bobby
Or to have back to back thirty goal seasons, And
if you watch the way he skates and the way
he can get away from people and protect the buck,
(26:45):
it's otherworldly. Defensively, He's got a lot to learn and
a long ways to go, but he could come in
slot in next to one of the more experienced guys
and really make an immediate impact.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
In my eyes, anyway, I'm super excited to see him.
I mean, he's he's ninety ten years old. I'd love
to see him in games here, and I guess my
take on is it is I think it's going to
be a good experience to have him up with the team,
and I'm super excited that you got the inside info
today that he was headed headed to Calgary. And then
(27:16):
I sit and I think about this, and I'm like,
I worry about his defense. You want to calm a
little bit of the hype in the fact that, like, hey,
we can't forget that he did struggle pretty much all
a preseason. But yet I also look at that as
a step in his development, right, And he went this
year and had another unbelievably good season, just an unbelievably
(27:41):
good season, And I sit and I look at it,
and I'm like, oh, let's put it in right away,
because like, what's the worst that can happen? Because defensively,
we haven't been all that great to start with. So
I'm totally okay with maybe risking a little bit of
his defensive flaws for his huge, huge offensive upside.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Yeah, one hundredercent. I mean his his ability to make
everybody around him better, right exactly.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
I mean, he is so dynamic with the puck, and
how much he could help our power play with some time.
Of course, I know he's not gonna step in and
just be a powerplay wizard, but like, just with some
time and with some fine tuning to the NHL level,
I mean, the sky is a limit for this guy,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (28:26):
Yeah, And I mean I would take it a step further.
I think he actually could possibly step in and make
an immediate impact on some on the power play, like
kind of like Lane Hudson's downe in Montreal who scored
just an unbelievable, awful angle goal yesterday, Like what a shot.
But as far as PreK goes like he he really
is that damn good and he did have a long
look in camp. But when a player doesn't make the
(28:49):
team and clearly struggles in certain situations, the most like
the best statement you can make is go back to
junior and absolutely dominate. And that's exactly what he did.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
Exactly what did And I'm going to defend him an
another thing too, When you're a first round pick in
a Canadian market, you get an unfair criticism or you
get either praised to a level that's too high if
you do well, and you get totally destroyed if you
if you struggle, you do you just you just totally do.
(29:18):
The expectations are so overinflated by the media and fan
bases that I felt like he got a bad rap
and with the first time he came through in camp,
and I hope he took and understood what all happened.
So that and he did exactly what the team asked
him to do. And I was going to have a
good good year in the ohl and and and and
totally dominated. And I'm ready and I'm excited. I'm excited
(29:41):
to watch him and I've got a place for him.
And so does our X factor here as I bring
that up, as uh, Jace says, get Jake Bean off
my team. I've seen enough bring up a wrangler anyone else, Hey, Jasey,
I've got the guy for you right here.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
Yeah right I.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
I think this week a lot of people's frustration boiled
over with with some of our defensive and not just
Jake Bean. I mean that's probably not fair, but there
was just been whether I mean, I saw moves this
week that Anderson did that I threw my remote in
the air. And if our defense is our defense looks
damn tired? Does that make sense?
Speaker 2 (30:22):
It's do And it's interesting too because I don't know
if like, because Bean's gonna head a two year contract
that he gets on Lasha gets.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
I think so I think they're like, oh, boy, we
got this guy. Next year, we're gonna have to just
keep signing up up.
Speaker 2 (30:42):
Yeah, I don't. I don't really know because like Tyson
Barry get banished forever. Tyson Berry is not coming back
to the NHL. You know. Now his struggles were a
little less subtle because of his lack of foot speed.
But Jake bean is I'm curious what what play JC
is referring to there, But they thank you for the
X factor, by the way. I don't I don't really know.
(31:05):
I don't like, I don't know why this guy keeps
getting a chance after a chance. And I don't want
to come down to I mean, I don't play pro
hockeys want to come down to. But it's interesting for sure.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
You know, it is one thing like we criticize a
player here like it's like like we get it, like
this is a professional hockey league. This is tough stuff here.
But we also get it too that you know, you
got to demand excellence in the National Hockey League too, right,
I mean it's it's a two way street. I have
but the utmost respect for every player that suits up
for the National Hockey League and could only dream of
(31:37):
it myself, right, and it was just dreams literally dreams.
But there is struggle points, and there is things are
players of on the goods and the bads, And I
don't know, I just I think it's a whole part
of the learning process of building a team, right and
who's going to fit in for the future and and
who's and who's not.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Oh, absolutely absolutely now hmhmm. It's interesting too because as
far as this team goes, there's a there's been a
few standouts obviously, and there's a lot of these players
like being that were kind of plugged in to, you know,
take a spot help this team through its development curve,
and now they've become you know, almost detrimental in some case,
(32:22):
especially when you guys like Prec or you know, getting
ready to come up maybe play a few games, or
other guys we've talked about with the Wranglers who haven't
got a shot yet or didn't get much of a
shot Alis Olivoyov. So it's to be really interesting to
see what happens to summer with some of these guys.
Is you know, just being get banished to the Wranglers.
Does he not make the team at a camp?
Speaker 1 (32:41):
I would hope he doesn't, and I'm not only because
if he does, then I feel like we're a we're
a either holding somebody back or we didn't make the
proper moves in the offseason to shore up our defense.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Well, and that's the thing. And I I, like I
said before, I was a big fan of signing Jake
b and I wish it was done a year prior
when he signed in Columbus, but it hasn't panned out,
at least to this point. So these pieces that are
brought in to kind of fill in gaps, presumably we
start to move on from them as these younger guys
start to take places or make other moves in the summer. Right,
(33:15):
So I don't know what the next step in the
progression looks like because we all thought we knew what
was gonna look like this year, and then Dustin Wolf
decided to be a star goalie and it's been nothing
like what we thought. We're still talking about playoffs and
it's literally, you know, we're past the first week of April,
Like it's wild.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
For all the criticism that this team's getting for being
in this position, it's like, guys, hello, if Dustin Wolf
doesn't do this, yes, we are a tanking team, but
I sure would rather have a good goalie than oh
yeah team like I.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Will so yeah, and our you know, we'll call them
star players. Our best players have been just that most
of the year, and two of them in particular, have
taken to social media of late. And I want to
touch on that too because it's kind of funny because
it happened again last night with Nasam Kadri.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
Did you see that I did not fill me in here.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
Okay, So the first one, because we're gonna keep this chronological,
was Mackenzie Wieger coming aboard Rhet Warner after he made
some comments about Wigger's game and speed and all that
kind of thing. So we are shot back on X.
The second thing that happened, and I'm not really over
the concern with the details. I gave you a kind
of a rough, rough feruendut of it. But the second
(34:26):
thing with that was that sports Net made a comment
about like an eight or nine year rivalry between nas
and Kadri and Jack Eichel.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
I saw that though there has no basis to that
at all.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
I didn't I don't really get it. And then apparently
Kadri doesn't either because Kadri's found on Instagram. Seriously, let
it go, guys, like and all right, so here's the thing.
We love stories, and we love stories professional sports, and
we love rivalries. But when you know, broadcasts for that
maybe desperate to find something to hone in on, to
(34:58):
make something out of nothing. These guys are pro hockey players.
They're gonna get do with it all the time they get,
you know, probably ten to twenty years of playing against
each other once they've made it to the show. Like,
I am certain that neither Cadre nor Eichel cared at
all about anything went on between them in the past.
So this was something absolutely egregious that I don't remember.
(35:19):
Like it, it's kind of dumb, and Cadre called them
out on it. And I do like the fact that
the leadership corp of this team, guys like Wigran Kadri,
have been outspoken and responded to those avenues like guys
like this is stupid or in Wager's case, like seriously, yeah.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
Yeah, I know, it's crazy.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
We got we got a lot of character at the
top of this team. And I and I guess what
I'll say is I hope that these guys because in
Wiger will be one for sure. I hope these guys
are around to experience some success with the younger players.
They're gonna be leading this team in the future, because
they do deserve that. And as much as this season
has been predicated on really strong goaltending to get us here,
there have been strong performances from the older guys in
(35:58):
this team, and all those guys deserve to have for
as shrump playoff matchup. So somehow, someway, I hope that happens.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
Yes, let's just space on some NHL news And one
thing that we did we definitely need to talk about
today is is Alex Ovechkin breaking way Gotzky's record here
this afternoon in the Sunday afternoons. He scores eight and
ninety five and I was so happy to see that.
It was a goal, that was a good goal, No controversy,
(36:26):
no nothing.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
Lad doesn't play for the Flames, so don't worry about it.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
I didn't go the line or something silly like that.
But what what a what a cool moment. I I
don't know, I was it was fun. I wasn't huge
into watching every game of the race, but I did
see the tying goal live and I did see the
(36:50):
game winner today live on TV, and it was it
was fun. It was it was it was fun and
it was it was about as good as you can
get a record goal like that. And I remember, shoot,
I remember sitting exactly. I remember exactly where Gretzky was
when he scored his against Vancouver, and I remember, I
(37:12):
remember all that, so I'm sure I'll remember this, uh
this ov goal like that too. Now he's got a
ways to go as most goals all time, including playoffs.
Did you know he's still he's still behind Gretzky and
that Gretzky's got oney sixteen, He's got nine to sixty six.
And he's quite a bit behind on the on the
(37:35):
points thing. But we're not talking about him being the
best points we're talking about him being the best pure
goal scorer and what an accomplishment went on or.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
Yeah, you can't. Points can't be broken because hockey has
just changed too much. In my mind, at least the goals.
I didn't think it would be broken. But Avection has
just been that damn good in the way that he
scores doesn't require him to be the fastest guy. It
doesn't require a lot of creativity. He just rips bucks
and he does better than anybody else ever has. So
now the question comes, does he And I'll ask you this,
do you think he hits nine hundred this season's.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Five more ago? And Nah, it'd be tough. I think
he's gonna. I don't think he'll get that this year.
I think that'll be next year.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
It's about how many cores lights he had postgame because
I saw him rinking one of the locker room after.
Speaker 1 (38:19):
Yeah, I think he's gonna. I think he'll tone down now,
I just I do. I think it's it was such
a push right.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
Well, it's five five goals in five games. It's not unthinkable.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
No, it's definitely not unthinkable. M h. I gotta I
gotta pick your mind on two things here before we go.
So Patrick Waw rips, Anthony Declare says he has a
he had a bad game. That's why I don't play
him a lot. And he's lucky to be in the lineup.
Sorry if I lose it on him right now, but
that's how I feel. How do you feel about that?
(38:50):
Like I've I've had my things I've liked about Patrick
Waw and the things I don't like about Patrick Waw.
I don't know these professional athletes. I think we've got
to be honest though right.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
Well side note, Patrick Waugh is part owner of the
Quebec Grum Parts who just got swept by my Monk
and Wildcat, so that was cool. But Patrick Waw, I
like how honest he is because I think the game
lacks that in a lot of cases. And I do
feel that his criticism they weren't like John Cordrella, where
I find Torrella like way too abrupt and just shitty
(39:25):
to his players, and some of it says and Darryl
Sutter was guilty that too. With Pelchas, which we talked
about at length in the past, I thought was criticisms
were likely valid. It sounds like Duclaire I agreed with him,
which is why they agreed to some time apart. Because
usually this goes one of two ways. Either the player
falls in align with the coach wants, or the player
gets moved under the coach gets fired. Right, I guess
three ways, and.
Speaker 1 (39:44):
They're not firing Patrick Wall for Anthony Duclaire.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
No, But I like the fact that in this case
it sounds like both men took a fairly mature approach
to a problem and agreed to some space. And I
think on Patrick watspart, that's a pretty mature approach as
a coach, despite the fact that he's known for being
hot headed and perhaps short tempered. I'm not saying everything
he said was like things you really want to share
with the media. I think it was fairly respectful and
I didn't take many major issue with it. I do
(40:09):
think that people these days are way too soft and yeah,
in so many different ways, and I don't want to.
I also don't want to advocate for that toxic masculinity
hockey culture of you know, sucking everything up and and
you know, deal with things that that's the opposite end.
We don't want that either. But I think it's good
that you know, they can say their piece and and
do Claire hopefully comes because Declare is a good hockey player,
(40:31):
hopefully comes back motivated, and uh, you know, they can
continue their working relationship.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
Did you see the fight between Carolina and Washington the
other night where Chatfield did the old leg kick smash
the guy down? Yeah, how'd you feel about that?
Speaker 2 (40:45):
I don't like it.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
I didn't either. I'm all about fighting I'm all about
guys squaring off head on, but when you start swinging
your legs and kicking.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
And very very very dangerous, very dangerous, I didn't like it. No,
nothing about it to like, quite frankly, I get but
things too, like we still have some As we've said,
it's been a pretty interesting season and if if the
playoffs are indeeded a reach like they mathematically appear that
(41:14):
they will be soon, we do have lots of things
to look forward to it. Trevor neufeld On uh on
Ax is a really great follow. He fought like he's
one of those guys I think just had enough and
he kind of lashed I shouldn't say lashed out, but
he called out a good portion of the fan base
and basically said, like, you know, if you're not enjoying this,
like you're part of the problem, right yep, this whole
(41:36):
team tank thing, Like yeah, it's just yeah, you should
be enjoying this. You should find it fun. You should
be excited to see like oh, you know, Minnesota lost,
or or you know, anything of that nature that gives
Kyle great chance because ultimately, again as we talked about
last week, Brad, we're we can't. And you said it
again today. We can't tank. It's too far gone. Yeah,
missile hope for the best, we.
Speaker 1 (41:58):
Work at it. We can't tank when you have one
of the best goalies in the league. I think it's
got a hard No.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
Justin Wolf is tank proof. I'd love to see. No, Okay,
I wouldn't want to see this. I just said I'd
love to see, but I wouldn't. But I'd be curious
to see a scenario where Dustin Wolf was the goaltender
for the Santse Sharks. It's a California kid, But I
wonder how many more points than they would have with
Wolf in net twelve? I was going to guess ten.
(42:24):
I like that. Great minds, Brad, great minds.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
Yeah. So where are we at in your money fund?
We gotta get you some money this week. Got to
get some money or twenty three oh five. We need
to get to the three.
Speaker 2 (42:38):
Yeah, it's kind of the last push for that too.
So I mean, I've I've got to do more of
my part to collect some more cash. But it's gone
really well so far, and the team's actually doing really well. Yeah,
because we're we're getting that right. So yeah, my, my,
actual regular playing season is done in a few weeks
and then I'm off the ice und than a couple
of practices until that weekend, so I'll be the.
Speaker 1 (42:59):
Links are this week, are getting the links on social media.
We got to get Kyle to the three thousand. I
want to see video of him in a shootout. Let's
get him up to three thousand. He's at twenty three
h five right now. The fundraiser is in support of
the Heart and Stroke Foundation in New Brunswick. It's going
to be fun for Kyle, but it's also going to
be fun to watch and it's also for a great,
great cause as we help out the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
Yeah, much appreciated the plugging as always, and thanks everybody's
donated so far. It's a really cool opportunity. You can
also check the Heart and Stroke Hockey Heroes website to
see all the alumni that are playing, because I would
take my while to listen them all. It's a pretty
cool list though.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
All righty, we'll update on that again next week. Please,
if you have extra funds, shoot him that way. We'll
put up the link and we appreciate that. This week
for the Flames Monday, Calgary has a San Jose must
do points Wednesday in Anaheim, another must due points Friday
at home against them in a little wild the only
team we can possibly catch, another must two points. And
(44:00):
then on Sunday we can't have a be a letdown
as San Jose comes to town another must two points.
Get the picture on how that works.
Speaker 2 (44:08):
There, Kyle, I pretty well got her down. Pat.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
I have no idea what this a week will bring.
I have no idea. I have no idea. I'd love
to see wins. I'd love to see eight points. How
does that sound?
Speaker 2 (44:22):
I'd love I'd love to see eight points in the wild.
Just get dummied night after night.
Speaker 1 (44:28):
Oh man, it would be you know, I will. I
will tell you this. I live in North Dakota. I
live right next door to Minnesota, and Minnesota Vike needs notorious,
notorious for fumbling it down the end, down the stretch
and finding a way to not make the playoffs or lose.
Minnesota Twins. Same exact thing, and come on for a while,
please do me a favorite. Carry on the Minnesota loser tradition.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
Please join your.
Speaker 1 (44:55):
Cousins as we go today, a new we're gonna have
to listen to a small town strip club. The Canadian
alternative band out of Stratford, Ontario, and you can watch
them live nine seventeenth in Stratford at the Rotary Complex
and in London on the nineteenth at the Palisade. Good
(45:17):
new young band from Canada. I hope you enjoy it.
Claims fans have a good week, come on eight points.
We need them, We need them, Kyle'll have a good week.
Always fun talking talking with you.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
We will keep it interesting till the very end. It's
the bitter end.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
It's bad. Take care flam senter.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
See you guys.
Speaker 1 (45:37):
So you want the best bag big prograsses.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
Don't play twice the.
Speaker 1 (45:48):
Cud of check.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
That's in check.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
That's they will side.
Speaker 1 (45:53):
It's a big.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
Said.
Speaker 3 (46:00):
