Speaker 1 (00:27):
Hey, everybody, welcome to another edition of Flames Unfiltered. We
are your house myself Kyle Lewis of course, Brad Bird, Yeah,
welcome to like my high death edition. You know, I
got new equipment, got a new bacbook rocking that, you know,
like trying to get used to the freaking thing. Thanks
Brad for all your patients.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, constant upgrades. Hey, we're trying to make it better
every time, you know. So that's good. You'll like it
once you figure it out. It's not, uh not the
easiest thing to learn, but I promise, promise it gets it,
gets good, gets good.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
I'm gonna hold you to that because this has this
has been a very difficult transition, almost forty years old,
trying to figure this shit out. But hey, we're gonna
stick with it, just the same way we stick with
your favorite hockey team, the Congree Flames. So that's why.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Oh man, you know, preseasons underway. We've had two games
last night, split split squad, Hate split squad. You know
what I was thinking about this morning might be our
last time we ever see split squad.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
God willing, I don't think we'll eat.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Again when we go down to four preseason games. I
don't think we'll see split squads again.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
I don't think we will, And I am okay with that,
you too.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
I'm done with it. I'm over that. I I don't know.
I'm just got hockey's back. Like I got to watch
the Flames last night, the home game, and then I
saw some highlights from other ones. I went to a
couple of junior hockey games this week and kind of
getting that itch. It feels good. I love this time
(01:53):
of year when it's a little cooler nights, Playoff baseball
coming up, and then yeah, most of all, we'll get
hockey games to talk about. We're finally talking about live
hockey because it's been it seems like a long time
since we got to talk about game situations, right.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Oh yeah, it feels like it's been forever. But you know,
with regards to the preseason, did you happen to see
the Saint Louis Blues tweet about the preseason?
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Ope? Didn't see it.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
I'll read it to you real quick. It's spot on.
Remember the first rule of preseason everyone, if we win,
it means something, but if we lose, it's just preseason.
It doesn't count anyway.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
That would have been my X factor had eye seen that,
even though part of flames. But we got a good
one later on. We'll get to that later. Yeah, I agree,
it's so meaningless and it's so okay. Let me phrase that. Man.
It's meaningless for a lot of the roster, not meaningless
for some. And that's probably what we'll talk about the most,
(02:52):
is the relevancy of it. Last night Sunday night in Edmonton,
Calgary wins three two overtime and then drops the three
nothing defeat at the Doome last night, and I got
to see pretty much everybody. I do have a question
for you. Why didn't we not see Hunter Orustevach on
either roster?
Speaker 1 (03:13):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
I mean the injury. I've searched high and low for
any report of any injury.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Yeah, I don't think there's any sort of injury situation.
But I think is.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
We did not see Sharon Govich either. But you know,
not everybody's gonna get to play, right, I mean, because
there's still a lot of guys. As they start to shore.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
It's a crazy amount. I mean, thankfully they started to
do a kind of the preliminary cuts, right, you know,
with the guys that going back to junior that were
there on a tryout basis. So yeah, I mean, thankfully
there can't be that many preseason games and there can't
be everybody playing them, as you said, but it does
make it a little a bit of a curiosity how
certain players draw, and especially those that we know we're
(03:55):
going to be on the team, right.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Yeah, And I know there is some regulations too though,
like they have to have so many veterans playing and whatnot.
So I mean, I'm not reading into it. I did.
I'm not gonna lie though. I did search every source
I could figure out and saw no report of any injuries,
so that that's a that's a good thing. So yeah,
and you know what I mean, if you really want
to think about it, we should be having Sharon Gowich
(04:18):
play because we want to get him going, don't we. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yeah, he's probably the top of the list of guys
who need to you know, supply some what people keep
calling secondary offense. So we'll have to see what happened
with them.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
You know, as I watch and I agree with the
single lose Blues, and I know me and you have
talked about this a lot. It's it's it's fairly meaningless.
But it just as I watched last night, it just
became even more glaringly obvious that, like, we just do
not have any high high end talent offensively.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Uh. I guess that's where the jury still at. I
think Coronado is one of the purest snippers in the league,
and hopefully we'll see that this year. But in terms
of like absolute game breakers, there's just so many questions
marks just guys. It certainly could be but.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, and I agree with that, but I don't know
what did you think watching last night? Who who? Let's
get right into that. Let's talk about that person and
we'll go through the rest of the stuff, But like,
who stood out to you? And please don't say Nick
sick a curse? He did stand out, But god, I
don't know that that was the whole talk is a
(05:24):
cheat check?
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Yeah, yeah, listen, it's really tough to talk about. Yeah, Like,
it's really tough to judge any of these guys. I mean,
if we're going to base it off what we've seen
so far, Devin Cooley really looked kind of shaky, Morgan
Frost looked like an All Star. I mean, neither of
those things are gonna be. I don't suspect they'll be
the case through at the season, but yeah, Frost was
really impressive. I think he's going to a lot to
prove this year. I mean, well we all know that
(05:46):
he does. Yeah, actually was quite good. I mean, he's
a big goalie and it was kind of fun to
watch him play. I'm gonna I'm gonna jump back and
forth between these games because that's it's not what I
was doing, and I was watching it right, So.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
I watched only the Calgary one just because the Edmonton thing.
I I don't know what I was doing wrong there,
but every do everything I had, I would have had
to pay last night a monthly fee and I'm not
giving the Oilers any money.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
So well, they needed to transom mc david.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
So we're gonna talk about that later.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Is it everyone?
Speaker 2 (06:25):
I know? I don't know though, Like the goalie battle,
let's let's let's go through that, because that is probably.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
It's one of the bigger question marks.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
I don't go buest question mark. It's the only clear
cut battle that I that I see, clear cut, clear cut.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Yeah, It's it's interesting because, like I read an article
today on sports that you know, concerning the fourth line
and how people have it all penciled in and they've
already been trying it with lomberup Lomberg, Paspacil and Klapka.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Right h.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
But then there's all these guys like Sam Morton, Ider
Sony of Carter King, Justin Kirkland, guys that are vying
for like a full time spot. Well, those spots are
only gonna be on the fourth line. So it doesn't
sound like there's much of a battle, but there's always,
you know, a surprise towards in the camp. Sam Honsick
we talked a lot about in the last show. But yeah,
(07:21):
the only clear cut battle on this team other than
like the seventh f as well, I guess is the
backup gold Nder position.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
I think there might be a little bit more on defense,
so we can dig into that too. Let's talk goalies first,
Devin Cooley, I even Puls How do you say this off?
Is it sad? I don't want him to make the
team because I'm gonna have to learn that. No, I'm joking.
When Ristavitch gets on the team, even though he's been
(07:50):
a guest of the show and we talk about him frequently.
I still struggle every time I have to write his name. Anyways,
Devin Cooley did not look good out of the gates.
A real sight on the first one. Yeah, honestly, not
a real good outing for him. I don't know how
any any better way to put it. But I also
don't think that this is going to be determined in
(08:12):
sixty minutes of hockey either.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Oh god no, I mean realistically, both players could have
you know, crappy exhibition games, would still have good camps, right,
I think that that's gonna come. That's me one of
the final cuts. Whatever goal under goes to the wraglers,
but give how much struggle the second half of the year.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
It's whatever goalie goes on waivers.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Well yeah, well, and I don't know that either one. Well,
I guess in in Protov's case, he's a big, big
goal thunder, so somebody might take a chance on him.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
But I don't know. And I listened to a ton
of Flames talk today, and this is a big topic.
You know, Well, we don't want to lose a guy
on waivers, Like do we protect the one we don't
think it's gonna get. I'm like, if we're picking our
backup goalie on who we don't think is going to
go through waivers. That's not the way to do this.
(09:03):
The way I look at this is whoever wins this
gets the spot. Whoever doesn't is on waivers, and if
we lose him, so be it. Nothing we can do.
So be it, because you know what, the sun will
come up tomorrow because we'll find another backup goalie if
the other one sucks. Just like we all lost our
(09:24):
minds when Jacob Pelja went on waivers and no one
said a word and he didn't even get claimed, and
nobody's saying a word about him anymore. I mean, we've
got the list goes on and on. Yes, And I
know somebody listening is going to type and say, well,
Paul Byron and I agree. There is a few that,
you know, we maybe we're a little quick. Cole Schwint
(09:45):
that's one. There's a couple of them that I think, yeah,
well we didn't have we don't have any big centers.
And I'm not saying he's going to save the day,
but let's let's just be honest. If they're going on waivers,
we can count on one hand the people that will
one on waivers and turned out to be superstars. Yes,
I know there is some, but they're they're few and
(10:06):
far between.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
Well, I mean, never mind super star serviceable NHL or
is Bank. Brett Kulak was another one. Yep, yep, a
really nice career. But ultimately, you know, the team is
relatively deep at every position goaltenders so a little less so.
Although I think now that they're so confident as they
should be with dust A Wolf, they were not so
concerned with letting damn let our go. And I know
(10:27):
that they wanted to bring let Our back, but it
didn't pan out. He wants a chance to get his
start and it wasn't gonna happen in Gallgrey, right.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
I think they probably offered him a pretty good deal,
and I mean fair market value for a backup.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Oh, they offered him a good deal. Philly offered him
opportunity though, right that's.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
There, it is Kyle. That's probably the quote of the week,
right there, And you're totally right. We can't offer that opportunity.
And you know that I do think that. I don't
I truly believe that this organization. If one of these
two or even both of them don't work out, there's
plenty of veterans that we could sign as a solid
backup that that would be willing to take on that role.
(11:03):
And uh, I'm not losing sleep over this battle. And
who is chosen. I think they'll pick the right one.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Oh, I think so too. I'm actually I'm looking forward
to although I have a really strange thing keeps happening
in my brain. I don't think this just tells you
how to give a fan I am every time I
see prospectav wearing number fifty. Yeah, I think of Sega Doolin,
who might have played part of one game with the Flames, maybe.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Maybe one, and I have his at all?
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Why, I don't know, It's just my brain makes no sense,
so h huh. But yeah, so help me out here, though.
Where are your because I'm curious for your thoughts on this?
And I might have misspoke because there are some battles
bead on d but I think it's fairly cut and dry.
But let's jump into the defense. What do you see
going on there?
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Well, I mean, obviously you know you got your Anderson,
you got your Handley, You've got your you've got your Pall.
I got yet? Come on, Weiger? Yeah, I forget and
then you know, I think you're you're gonna have your
your Jake Bean battle. I don't know what I feel there.
(12:14):
I thought he looked halfway decent last night.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
He got a lot of praise. Zaye Peak, of course,
is that everybody's talking about.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
And I'm like, I'm all on board of Zaane Perek.
I do have a couple of things that I wanted
to touch base on. I mean, and and I'm surely
not gonna talk negatively about a guy who put up
one hundred and one and ninety six points and is
in the most points by defenseman since two thousand. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Also the first Ohl defenseman have back to back thirty
goal season since Bobby Or. It's hard to repeat that
fact too much, you know it is.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
And he's in good company with Ryan Ellis and our
buddy Hunter Bustavitch Evan Bouchard. But here, but here's my thing.
Zaane Perek is going to get a spot on this
roster by default, m by default, because we can't send
him back to juniors. He has nothing to prove, and
with the CBA the way it is currently right now,
(13:09):
we can't send him to the American Hockey.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
League mm hmm.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
So he's gonna sit on this roster and he's either
gonna play and play well, or he's gonna sit and
not play at all, or play and be bad. Those
are the three options.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Now, I hope that it's play and play well. And
I quite honestly have no worries at all about his
offensive ability at all. But this league is a fast,
fast league, and there was a couple of nights times
defensively last night I was like, oh gosh, fish out
of water. Oh no, into the corner, no stick sliding
(13:44):
on his backside, Oh my god, now't get me around.
There was a couple of moments last night where he
was moving the puck and skating and I was like, oh, hell, yeah,
this is gonna be fun.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
There was his ability to get the puck to the
net and to make passes through seams. But it was like, wow,
you know, very impressive stuff. But I understand your concerns
as well.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Part of this concerns that I have is is that
I grew up in an era where I was like,
if you can't play defense, I can't worry about how
good you are offensively because you can't play defense. Okay, now,
the league has changed and we have some guys I
Carlson probably would fit into that where I would say
(14:25):
he's a great offensively, not good defensively. Some people, I
know my Vancouver people will throw ship fits when I
say this, but I don't think Quinn Hughes is exceptionally
good defensively. But he's very, very dynamic offensively. I would
look at a guy like Cale mccarr and say, hey,
he does both right, and that's what I hope Zane
(14:46):
Prec does. And he's not gonna do that right away,
and there's gonna be a lot of times this year.
I'm just gonna have to be like swallow that just
don't worry about that because what he brings offensively outweighs
what he doesn't bring us defensively. But this league is fat, fast,
fast fast, and come what is it October seventh or
first night against Edmonton. When Connor McDavid's streaking down the side,
(15:06):
Inzane Perrex on that side, hang on to your shorts,
it's gonna be a new game.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Mm hmm. Yeah. But I think the key with that is,
I mean he's likely going to see fairly heavy power
play minutes and you have to try and shelter him
on that bottom possibly in that bottom pair right as
he grows into that role.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
And I'm not trying, I mean, I'm just being cautious.
I love what he brings up pensively, and God knows,
on our defense we need somebody that can do that.
We we really really do. I just think it's gonna
be really careful who they pair him with. And I
don't know the jig Bean is the answer there, But
then I think they're they're their plan there is to
have him with a guy that can shelter him with
(15:48):
a little bit against some of the top lines.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah, and it just because of the implications and the
other pairings, it's hard to know who that guy's gonna be.
I think Being apparently showed up to camp in really
good shape, and he kinda and his exit interview last
year talked about what he felt he had to prove.
So I don't Bean might be the best option for him.
Uh Mayor Manoff apparently is a fantastic shape too, but
he's far from a defensive stalwart, so I'm not sure
(16:14):
that would be a great pairing. But inevitably, yeah, I
think inevitably you're going to see probably a rotating cast
to play with prec unless somebody really there's themselves maybe
got like Brandon Bhall. But then you get two readies together,
like there's there's a lot of things there that will
become clear as camp goes on. It's a little early
at this point, but.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
This might work out that we have Kevin Ball with
him and that would be just fine.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Then who would Anderson have been?
Speaker 2 (16:41):
I don't know. Anderson is not going to be here probably.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
But it's gonna be here for it seems to me anyway,
like a while yet, But I mean, you could be right.
It's hard to say now. And that's kind of the
variable in all this. So if you can cash in
and Anderson somehow and move out a defenseman for whatever
you can get for him, like, it would almost solve
some problems in a way in terms of deployment.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Because we got Hunter Brustevit, who's coming up who I
think is I can't say equally offensively dynamic, but damn close.
And his stats in the in the Know showed that too,
as we watched him put up in twenty three twenty
four ahead ninety two points, which ranks fourth amongst top
defenseman points since two thousand. So we have an abundance
(17:30):
of offensive prospects coming, and I don't think that's a
bad thing.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
Right Well, they're not all going to play. And here's
the thing, and I mean, I don't want to start
any any window here. But you know, the Flames drafting Perak,
you know, I don't think we Stavia saw that and thought,
oh this is great. I think he thought, oh shit,
you know, like one of us. Yeah, like anybody in
his position would. And the way it is now and
I'm thinking back to Adam Fox and many many others.
(17:55):
Players want to play where there's opportunity, and that opportunity,
you know, it has certainly changed since Prec was drafted.
They're both fantastic prospects, but I don't know.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
I don't know if there's room for two of them
on the right.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Side, but there certainly isn't right now. This would necessitate
a lot of changes, and those changes would subject the
team to being defensively a little bit weaker in the
short term and thereby kind of screwing up their plan
of getting competitive by the time you know, the new
building opens, are making the playoffs this season, et cetera,
et cetera.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
So because that is coming very quick.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
Yeah, well, and I mentioned this too, Really did you
get a chance to watch that clip on Sports Net
with Kyle pscossasaid.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
We didn't see it today. You're not going to believe this,
you know, I complained to the last episode, how things
just get rerund over and over and over. Well, my
streaming service this morning was uh operating about as well
as your email was tonight.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
The Kyle while that poorly?
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Wow, Yes, and so I did not get to see it, hmm,
although I know your text to get me keyed in on.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Yeah, well, now the it, I'll just give a quick
rundown for those who didn't see it, please look it
up now that Kyle allegedly lives in Calgary. From what
I've heard, the Flames got like a spotlight shown on
them on Sports at Central this morning, and like they
talked about everything about, you know, the Flames tying for
that last playoff spot talk about Backland choosing to stay,
(19:21):
Cornado emerging offensively, Zuri resigning, Ball resigning the emergency Wolf,
the fact that the only the only departures basically were
Anthony Mantha and Dan Ledire like it was really in depth.
I'm like, what the hell channel am I watching? This
is on the National Morning Sports program, and I was
actually blown away, like wow, they're actually doing a service
(19:43):
to the Flames. They're actually highlighting all the different things
seeing PreK was mentioned, of course, as to why this
team is a really interesting one to watch this year.
I was actually because usually it's like, you know, they go,
they do seven Canadian teams and here's everybody's camp story.
But it was like a really in depth thing to
talk about Nest Pacadri. I was like, wow, like this
is great. I would love to watch this type of
coverage all year.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
I'm gonna have to look it up tonight because there
is a lot of questions in Calgary and I think
a lot of a lot of positives. My only fear
is I just, you know, I sit and I look
at our roster and I'm like, oh, boy, offensively, you know,
I think, you know, we have some guys that are
going to step into that. I think there's a really
bright future for Gridden. I wasn't super last night. He
(20:30):
had a really bad turnover that cost a goal, but
I mean that's stuff that happens, right.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
But his overall showing this far has been quite and
it's very early, but it has been quite strong.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
It has been quite strong. I got Sam Morton looked
really good left last night. Stromgren was a little quiet.
I didn't see him pop like I think he will
in the future. And Adarsuniev got he got popped about
ten times. But I like his play and I think
there's something to be had there just waiting for like
(21:02):
that next step, right that that next step has to
come for those guys, and we'll see when that when
that is, but I feel like there's some some hope there.
I still think that if you look at our rosters
through our thing, I don't we obviously don't have that
number one C center that we need to drive this franchise.
And uh, that's on the want list right and that's
(21:25):
probably on seventeen teams's want list right now, right.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
If not more. But I mean, ultimately the center depth,
if sorry, can emerge, if possible, so can hold it
in that fourth line spot. I mean, it's going to
be better than what a lot of people predected, much
like much like the team was last year, right, So
all stoff to keep an eye on. But Ultimately, there's
going to be so many players that should be close
to making this team. Uh, Morton is a really good
example you mentioned. Ultimately, it's going to be interesting to
(21:51):
see how the Wranglers line up looks too, because they
should have a very good team, a very good team.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
I well, I think this like this organization's I don't
know how many years I got the Hockey News the
prospect rankings, and Calgary is always getting a D minus
every year.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
Oh man, year after year after year. That's just the worst, right, Yeah,
And we spent lots of time on the show talking
about some of those those draft picks over the years
and oof man, but.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
This year's this year is a big year. I mean,
it really is a big year, and there's a lot
of questions to be had, and you know that kind
of that kind of brings us right on over to
our X factor now and we'll pull that up here
as Flame and Wherfer whatever that means. Says friendly reminder
that Frost, our Fairbee, Frost, and Sharon Govid should all
(22:39):
be expendable should there seasons not go as planned. Guys
like Gridding are a lot closer than you think. Win
in doubt go Home Growing, well, it's been hard to
be home growing. When Homegrowing's cupboards were bere they started
starting to agree with that a little bit more. But
most of all, the reason I get this I fled
(23:00):
this one a little bit, was because it is critical
this year that fair Bee, Frost and Sharon Govich takes
steps in the in the in the right direction. All
of them struggled miserably last year. Yep, Frost in one
preseason game did really well. We'll see how that plays
out and see how that carries over into the season,
(23:22):
but it is it is important that those guys take steps.
And uh, I know the talk in Calgary this year
has been we need to be five everybody needs to
be five to ten percent better. That's all well and good,
but we got to make sure that nobody's five to
ten percent worse.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
Right, Yeah, it's it's gonna be really interesting to see now.
Sharon Govic has a bit of a longer commitment from
the team right now. But no, this is a guy
that that scored thirty goals and I think for this
team to be a legitimate threat, he has to get
back to twenty some for sure. Frost. I'm counting on
to be a fifty point player, which might.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
Be a little yeah, I do forty.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Yeah, I got him beg for fifty and we'll see
if I end up eating Crowing that one. And then
Farby is the one. I said this on the xtit
of the day that I just have such a hard
time getting real. He's scored a highlight of the year
type goal against Dallas last year, but we didn't see
much else from him.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
Right, We didn't. And I know there's a transition probably
for both those two coming over from Philly, both of
them not expecting to be moved either, So we can't
lose back to those of those things. But I also
don't like to make excuses for players. These as are
professional athletes, and when you're called on to produce, it's
time to produce, and and we didn't get that from
from them last year. But I do think that, I mean,
(24:34):
I remember so many posts for Frost and so many
like how did that not go? In last year? So
I do see a good upside there for Farrabe. He's
just a different player, and I think a lot of
us had him kind of misjudged. I know I did.
I thought he was more of an offensive threat. He
he's probably more of your grinder, make things happen the
(24:55):
hard way type of player.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
And that's twenty goals one year though too, So there
some offense to be had there.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
Yeah, And so like I surely am not writing him
off either. And Sharon Govic, I mean, outside of Coronado,
I don't know who shot I like better on this
team than Sharon Govich. And but last year he left
me frustrated many nights and it seem like he was
getting manhandled in the puck just very very easily. And
(25:22):
that's not a recipe for success. And if you're not
able to control the puck and make things happen, you're
surely not going to get those shots and not get
those points. So he's got to figure that out this year.
And I serve with the team, searched all year last
year to find line mats that made it happen with
him and nobody and nothing came of it. Right, So
he's a guy that's got to figure it out this
(25:44):
year and step up. There's a long term commitment you
mentioned just a minute ago, and those are three guys, boy,
that just need to come to come to play this year.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
Yeah, I mean, I'm kind of over the shar Gooviich
is a center experiment.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
All that is, so there is no way he is
not strong enough to be a center in this league.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
Well, I think just as importantly though, as that he
needs much like Cornado's needed and Coronado seems to have
it in Gadraid's like you need a trigger man, right
Scheragbuch has got, as you said, such a great shot.
I think him, you know, on the wing, top of
the circle. Maybe it's a guy like Frost and can
feed in the pocket. You get back to twenty twenty five,
maybe thirty goals, but that's gonna be paramount of this
team having any measure of success. And to your other point,
(26:24):
rather to the X factor, these guys, like this team
is for so so long, has hung on to guys
year over a year and replaced players a similar players
similar aid to try and you know, find the right mix.
And the reality is I think it's bang on, like
you've got to move on from certain players and give
young guys a chance, which is exactly what kept this
team mediocre for so so long. We've all, you know,
(26:45):
flogged that horse to death. But it's really really important
to do that. If you have an opportunity to trade deadline,
you're not in a playoff spot. You can cash in
on some of these guys potentially and elevate guys like
maybe Griddin, who could very well be ready or close
to ready at that point. You're gonna take that chance
on the.
Speaker 2 (27:01):
Flip side of that, and I and I agree with
you completely. But then when the ball is in the
courts of the of the gridd And and Hansick and
they get that chance, it's time for them to step
up and do what Matthew Cornado did.
Speaker 1 (27:12):
Yeah, And I think, like in a touch of this
in the last show, I think Hansick has has done
that by adding so much muscle to his frame. I
think fifteen pounds this past summer, which is exactly what
his what his game needed by all accounts. And we
saw it when he got knocked out of the regular
season last year for a bit and then spent the
rest of you at the Wranglers. All these guys are
going to.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Have anybody would have got knocked out on that one.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
But oh yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
But I did you know what you mentioned to me
about him getting fifteen pounds, And I paid attention to
it last night, and he did look like a bigger
body out there. Oh yeah, big played This Is it
just me or being difficult with him? It just seems
like he doesn't play in aggressive style at all.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
He's a little bit of a perimeter player to this point,
it feels, but I think he's also trying to, you know,
get comfortable out there. So I don't know. Again, like
it's so hard to judge on preseason, but I don't.
I think he's gonna be one of the last cuts
on this team. I don't. I don't feel he's gonna
make it in a camp this year again for whatever reason.
I guess the quality competition is a big reason why,
But I I could be wrong. This is I feel
(28:16):
like we said this last year too, but this is
a really really hard camp to judge, Which is the
biggest compliment you can pay these players.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Yeah, it's it's it's gonna be interesting. Of course, last
week when we recorded, literally within twelve hours of US recording, Slams,
news comes out, Michael Backland re signs, and uh the
news from sports Now, let's let's quickly go through those
and and touch on them, just because I do think
(28:41):
it is important to that we address our side. Are
our opinions on the backland resigning as he signs resigns
for two years three point seven and year one and
two point eight year two for a three point twenty
five cap. Yet, word, did this catch you off guard?
Because I did not. I did not hear any rumblings
(29:03):
of this going down the shoots, and uh, get caught
me off guard in a in a pleasant way, I guess.
Speaker 1 (29:12):
Well, And if you listen to back when the presser
talk about it, it's like he just reached a ka Conroy
and said, hey, we want to stay and you want
to talk, and that was it. Why not a stot coming?
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Well, we talked about it on last episode, like we
talked about our plan to have him with the team
and then you know, maybe slot down to the fourth
line center in time, have somebody take you know, I
don't think he's holding a spot from anybody. And quite honestly,
here's here's the deal. If you're a young player come
into the league and you're going to take a spot,
(29:41):
shouldn't you be able to take a spot from a
forty one year old center? Like If you can't, then
you're not an NHL player, Like, I don't get it.
I mean, I don't understand why there's some talk on
X Talk that people were upset. Well, he's just it's
just that contract stupid. It's going to hold a spot
from a young player, no earn spot.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
You can bury the player in the contract if you
had to, which I don't want to see that happen.
Like I compared to the Craig Conroy last time in
the end of his career as a flame, but I'm
more excited for him to stick around. Uh, you know,
to teach guys like Carter King and Sam Morton, how
to be a pro center, how to win face offs,
how to kill penalties, all that kind of stuff, right
(30:21):
is there?
Speaker 2 (30:21):
I mean, I mean there's I can't remember if it
was Weager, but one of the guys and the team said,
there's nobody better to mentor young players. There's nobody better.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
I well, I mean think about it. The guy I
learned from Jerome Aginlaugh for years terms of how to
be a leader, how to be a captain, and then
again you know through Marcherodono. Yeah, I mean, it's it's
good for the culture of the team, it's good for
Backlan and his family to have some more security. It's
great he's going to get to play in the new building.
I mean he's like, as we talked about before, even
before this contract was announced, hes probably gonna become the
(30:52):
Flames all time leader in games played. And good for him. Yeah,
of all the draft picks we had Backland, was was
it oh nine? Yeah, Like he's the one player from
all those years and it's like, yeah, hey, at least
we got him.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Right exactly well because he was some bad drafts little boy.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Yeah, big time.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
It was also announced the next morning after we recorded
that Brendan Parker was named the host of the regional
broadcast for sports Net and we we talked about that
and we we definitely pegged him as the front rner
and it was announced as John Abbott holds his spot
on the play by play and the analyst is Kevin
or Kevin Kelly Rudy. I'm excited about that group. I
(31:37):
think it's a good group and I think Brendan Parker's
promotions well well deserved.
Speaker 1 (31:43):
Well, we lost some big names last year's right obviously
Rick Ball, who think we all still missed. And to
take nothing away from John Abbott's do an excellent job.
And now Ryan Leslie moving to to Toronto. And as
I said before, these guys you know, moving on to
larger sports markets, larger cities, and good for them. But
much like the team you know on the broadcast side,
(32:05):
Calgary has a pretty deep bench, right and and there
was some great candidates we talked about, and we're gonna
see more of them, you know, and the months ahead
and taking all larger roles around the team. So it's, uh,
it's gonna be a little bit different, but it's still
exciting and it's a great group.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
Yeah, for sure. For sure. Let's talk. I want to
get your take on this. LA King's captain, Onsei Cole
Patar announces his retirement after his twentieth season. This will
be his final year.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
What are your thoughts there, Onsea Copatar is, how do
I do this player justice? He's one of the best.
He's one of the best centers well in King's history,
which is pretty high praise, but he's also one of
the best centers in the league in the last you know,
(32:54):
ten to fifteen years. It's the end of an era
in LA and I mean it's it's it's kind of
a weird time too, because that team is kind of
on the rise. His exit is going to create a major,
major void in their lineup. But I mean, he's a
phenomenal player far and away, and this is maybe not
so much a compliment, but I'll say anyway, the greatest
probably athlete, never mind hockey player that Slovenia has ever produced.
(33:20):
And yeah, he's just he's just a phenomenal, phenomenal hockey player.
And it's it sucks because we're all getting older and
seeing these guys move on. Right, It's like I watched
his entire career. I remember his entire career, you know.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
Oh yeah, But I mean, this guy's got two Stanley Cups,
two Selkies, three Lady Bings, one Messier Leadership Award, five
All Star appearances, and fifty four games and twelve hundred
and seventy eight points. And you know, is I heard
a question today and I and I this is one
of the reasons I wanted to talk about this in
the show. Is he the greatest Kings player of all time?
Speaker 1 (33:56):
Well? Yeah, I think you.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Wayne Gretzky played for the Kings.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
But he wasn't the greatest King ever. If he was
the greatest. He was the greatest king. They wouln't want
a company. He was there.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
For five years, I believe, m hmm. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
And who else would be on the list? Marcel Dion, Luke,
Rob Robots I would be up there, Rob Blake, Rob Blake,
hm hmm.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
Those would be the ones that stand out to me. Yeah,
Dion would probably get a lot of talk. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (34:34):
You know who my favorite LA king was for years,
Mattias Norstrom. Holy Ship. That guy was tough man. Was
he tough his captain for a number of seasons or two? Yeah,
I do. I don't think it's even I'd be interested
to hear any kings fans, you know, challenge that Copeitar
is not the greatest king ever. I don't think it's
(34:55):
even close, to be quite.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
Honest, I I think Marcel Dion would would be close. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
And I wouldn't say.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Wayne Gretzky though because Wayne only played their five years.
I still think Wayne Gretzky is the greatest player. Which
there's arguments there, right, I mean, there's a whole bunch
of arguments, and and I probably would agree with a
lot of them. Yeah, but it's still hard to take
away what the dominating factor that he really was in
the league. For sure, Rondre Copetar, it's gonna be fun.
(35:25):
I mean, he's kind of one of those guys that
plays for a rival team that everybody really liked. There's
not many of those guys, right, I mean, I hate
so many of the guys that used to be on
the Ducks. Like the first two years that Biexa was
on hockey in Canada, I just had to just grit
it and bear it because I'm like, I don't like
(35:45):
this guy, and now I think the show would be
garbage without him. And you know he is, He's fantastic.
But I mean, it's just when you think about rival teams,
it's really hard to have a lot of guys that
you're like, Man, I respect the hell out of that guy.
Guy was a good hockey.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
Player, well, a good hockey player, you know, good and
all three zones. Never any drama surrounding him personally, nothing
you ever hear in the media. Extremely well respected and
I hate cliches, but you know, plays the game the
right way, you know, three zone, twound foot player, offensively,
super gifted. Yeah, I don't know what you can say
(36:22):
about the guy.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
Yeah, top notch. Excited to watch him play this year.
Also got to get your take on this one. McDavid contract,
no lack of contract, I guess would be the better.
This is our topic north of.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
US, right topic league wide.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
Yeah, so what's your thoughts.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
Well, I'm so glad you asked. I thought the interview
with Friedman and Lacascos was a disaster. I thought it
was an absolute disaster. He looked like a deer in
the headlights. And I don't think it's really up for
debate at this point, mcdabe, McDavid is arguably the best
(36:58):
player in the world. You know, Crosby can make the case,
but he's you know, Crosby's you know, getting a little
long in the tooth, which feels weird to say because
we're the same age. But ultimately, I don't think McDavid
should have done an interview because it created such a firestorm.
His his answers were so vague, he's felt this and genuine.
(37:19):
They created so much concern at Edmondon and now you
get fans chanting with David, his leaving and things like that,
and it's like it's just one of those times way
better served to shut your mouth, like I just I
thought it was. I was cringing while I was watching, like, well,
you know, like it's we've taken our time with this decision,
and you know, this is where we're at in our life,
and it's like, man, what are you even saying?
Speaker 2 (37:39):
Like he's not a good interview to start, He's kind
of an awkward interview to start, and then when he's
asked questions that are that are pressing, difficult, and I'm
sure stressful for him and I know he he can
pretty much name a price tag for anybody and they'll
and they'll sign him. But he does have to make
that decision in this team. As much as they've made
(37:59):
it to the Stanley Cup finals two years in a row,
they still haven't given him a goaltender after all these years.
And people in Edmonton can say, oh, Skinner, Skinner this, No, no,
they haven't given him a goaltender.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
Well, I think it's worse yet. I mean that that
core is aging and they're and they're trying without respect
to a guy like Andrew Manchew ponni like bringing him
in hoping that and I mean, if he plays at
the David, he will score thirty five again, there's no
question in my mind. But you know, bringing in guys
because you're basically in cap hell trying to find fits.
I mean, this roster is aging, and it's kind of
the opposite of the flames of Flames are on the rise,
(38:31):
I would say right now, the oilers are kind of
stagnant and starting to move backwards. I mean, and hey,
I mean it's as much as it sucks to And
I would be devastating as a Flames fan to lose
a player of McDavid's talent, and we we you know
we did in a lot of ways, and losing Johnny G. Goodrou
when he left, but as well as Matthew U Chuck.
But I don't know what, like what were your thoughts
(38:53):
on what would you have done? Issues like did you
think it was a bad move to even do the interview?
Would you?
Speaker 2 (38:57):
I wouldn't even have done it. I wouldn't have opened
that door. I just wouldn't have It's it's tough. I
kind of imagine being asked questions like that and you
can't say the truth because it's about to play out.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
And and he may not know, like he may truly
be actually thinking about it. But he's such a crappy interview,
and again his answers were very they sounded like a politician,
they were so vague and indirect like, and it didn't
It didn't serve anybody.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
And quite honestly, Kyle, like, if I had to go
to Vegas and put one hundred thousand dollars down on it,
I put it down that he signs in Edmonton. Again,
I do, I do, But the fact that there's gonna
be a media storm up there this year with Quinn
Hughes and his talking Vancouver, but maybe that's gonna be
(39:44):
a media storm up there too. I mean, it's it's
gonna be. Oh, it's gonna be a year where the
spotlight's big, big, big in the Pacific Northwest.
Speaker 1 (39:55):
So have you sat back yet? And I haven't done
much of this, to be honest, but has it occurred
to you the McDavid firestorm at Edmonton, the Hughes thing
you mentioned in Vancouver, Marner leaving Toronto? Have you sat
and thought about how fortunate we are? This is kind
of a leading questions ever given me that, But how
fortunate we are? The Cornado and an American player signed
long term mclgary That wolf An American players signed long
(40:17):
term Mclgary, Like, what are your thoughts on do you
find that? Are you seeing this as like.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
I don't know if this is an America Canada thing.
Speaker 1 (40:27):
Okay, let's let's change then. Error, let's just say it's
about players. It's a small market though. Let's let's take
that approach.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Okay, let me let me phrase it to you this way.
I think it's a small market, but I think it's
a more geographically undesirable area.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
Versus you're done with like Vegas of course in Florida.
And yeah, yeah, understandably so. But would you have predicted, maybe,
as the best way to phrase is, would you have
predicted all these players would resigned for long term deals
in Calgary the way that they have?
Speaker 2 (40:59):
I don't know. I I think, I mean my personal
opinion on the whole thing. You know, Betman keeps saying
that the taxes don't matter. Bull ony, It doesn't.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
That's that's I mean.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
I'm not sure what percentage is being paid out of
income tax in Canada, but I know it's way higher
than anywhere in the US. And it is a very
very very bad factor. And the Canadian government and and
and the NHL can say it's not it is, it is.
I also know that in California they have like a
(41:39):
they're they're a financial disaster, but they have like a
floating tax that can go up to thirteen percent. Well,
states like Florida, Nevada, Texas have zero incompact, they don't
have an income tax. Well think about that. If you
sign for ten million in LA and you sign for
ten million in Florida or Exis or Nevada, I mean,
(42:02):
that's a thirteen percent discount, and it's a much higher
discount if you sign if you're even know, if you're
deciding between let's say Calgary and Dallas, and they both
want you, it's a hell of a discount to go
to Dallas. Now, personally, I'm not a Texas fan, and
I'd surely rather live in Calgary and even Edmonton. I
can't believe what I'm saying that then live in Dallas, Texas.
That's me.
Speaker 1 (42:23):
Yeah, But I.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
Don't know that I would four goal thirty percent or whatever.
I don't know what in income tax in canada's right now,
but I know it's it's fairly healthy. I don't know
that I would forego that kind of dollars. I don't know.
I feel like the league has to do something about this,
I really do. It should have been in this CBA
and it didn't, and I know Betman just keeps pushing
(42:47):
it off the side. But it is going to play
a factor on the Canadian markets, whether we want to
believe it or not.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Well, I think partly the first it's like any problem
for gonna do is you have a problem, and it's
absolutely a problem. But I also think it his a
Thatman's in his seventies now. I don't think he's gonna
be around to solve this issue, right, although I don't
see him exiting anytime soon either, despite the fact that
I think that the league starts just needs to start
looking at and conditionally planned for the next NHL commissioner.
But that's much like your discussion that we're gonna get
(43:15):
into today.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
Yeah I think they are. I think I think they are.
But but yes, I I agree with that.
Speaker 1 (43:22):
But back back to the whole thing. Like abut McDavid
about Quinn Hughes, but all these players, it's we keep
talking about needing marketable stars, you know, signing Dustin a
Wolf and Calgary that's like our number one marketable star,
and the Coronado's up there to prec could be there
as well. I don't know what the next plan is
if Vancouver loses a guy like Hughes if edvand to
(43:43):
lose McDavid. I mean, it's like, wow, okay, you know you.
Speaker 2 (43:46):
Know what the one I'm wanna I'm gonna I do
want to defend one thing. Like you said, I don't
defend what am I talking about? You know? You said,
are you surprised at Coronado and Wolf signed since they're
both Americans?
Speaker 1 (43:57):
MM?
Speaker 2 (43:59):
I like, let's say, I okay, this is a dream.
Let's say I was a good, really good hockey player
and I had the leverage to pick outside of like
and I know guys like Johnny Gudrou and stuff had
issues with this and stuff outside the way COVID was
handled differently between the two and the tax thing. I
(44:19):
personally would love to play in a Canadian market. I would,
I would absolutely love it. And quite honestly, I've visited
all the main cities in Canada and love all of them.
Edmonton is a little bit e, but I love them all.
I don't know, I mean, I don't see I don't
(44:39):
look at it as a negative outside of the financial
part of it, and that's what scares me. But that
is also if you're if you're a fan of a
Canadian team, which obviously we are, that that can be fixed, right,
that can be remedied. So I think, I think, I
don't know, So to answer your question after talking for
twenty minutes, I'm not super surprised that Americans signed up
(45:02):
there because I think Cornado and Wolf see something and
I think they're gonna get a new building to play
in now, and I think there there's a lot of
positives happening on the outside of the hockey rink in
Calgary that are gonna help well.
Speaker 1 (45:14):
And I think the pride of Potsdam, New York, because
I've said before Craig Conray being Jim in the Flames also,
you know.
Speaker 2 (45:18):
He helps, you know, for sure helps because he is
a great ambassador for that city.
Speaker 1 (45:23):
Oh well, you couldn't ask for better.
Speaker 2 (45:25):
Yeah, Okay, that was a lot, And I did not
know that that question about McDavid was going to go
off the rails like that.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
Well, there's so many things that right, It's it's a huge,
huge thing, and I'm just kind gonna say it once more,
just in case you didn't hear me the first time.
In terms of our listenership, like terrible interview. Oh, I
couldn't watch it back if you paid me to. It
was brutal. Anyway, I digree.
Speaker 2 (45:47):
One last question before we go about the Oilers. Did
you see their new alternate jersey and do you like it?
I hate it?
Speaker 1 (45:53):
I like it.
Speaker 2 (45:55):
I couldn't.
Speaker 1 (45:56):
I couldn't you like it? Really?
Speaker 2 (45:58):
I do? Well, they've had so many bad alternate jerseys.
They're they're all blue one with the.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
Yeah. My brother in law is not even a freaking
Oilers fan. He texted me and it's like, yeah, I
really like that jersey and like, actually, do what man?
I just I just can't. I don't know what it is.
I think it's it's the font more than anything. And
I'm also kind of clamoring for like I want to
see like the you know, the navy blue ones they
were in the lateties.
Speaker 2 (46:24):
I didn't like those at all, but see that was great,
was there? But see how we've talked about this, Me
and you were like history guys in a way, like
like you like what was when you were really influenced
by the league, right, that's what you like. Like, that's
why I like the Canucks is you know the skate logo,
like the black That's because that's when I would the
(46:46):
formative and I was just like, oh god, and that's
when I was really really growing in hockey. And you know,
it's just it's funny, it's it's it's those years.
Speaker 1 (46:54):
Rights actially this hat. Yet by the way, we've seen
this thing.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
Yes, I did see that last time.
