We're talking NHL Draft as rounds two through seven just
wrapped up here on a late Saturday afternoon, early evening,
we survived round one of the draft.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Yeah. Man, that was something, wasn't it? There was?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
You know, I think you know, I think the NHL
listens to the fans pretty well. I guess if they
don't listen to them on this one, I really don't
care what the gms think. I can't do that. That
was like the COVID draft, remember that.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Oh yeah, And actually it's not even so much the
fans thought. It's all the analysts and people that work
in hockey they were promoting it. That really kind of
stoked the fire right. It's like everybody disagreeing and you know,
loud units in. This is horrendous. You know, I just
told you before we came on and I fell asleep
three or four times last night just because the format
was so boring.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Absolute nightmare it was.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
It was awful and it took what fifty minutes I
think for four picks to be made at one point today.
Fifty minutes. Yeah, for four picks.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
The second round started off like ragging two and I
was just like, man, if this continues to go there,
I thought we were going to be here till like
nine o'clock. And I'm like, we do in our live show,
and we will not even have picked all of our picks,
which we barely did right now, because yeah, just as
we were preparing to come on on the air. The

(01:55):
Flames sent their seventh round pick next year to Detroit
to acquire the two, one hundred and eleventh throng pick,
where they got jan and Metavinco, a player selected and
spent time with this Cessay's junior team last year. And yeah,
he's a six and fifty pound defenseman. Doesn't even say

(02:20):
even listed left.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Wah left wing center. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
So I don't know, let's you who start right at
the top, you want to start going through the picks,
just do that.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, it may as well. I mean, I don't I'm
as far as the top of the draft goes, I mean,
I don't think Flames could have done better given you know,
what they were looking for, what they came away with,
especially for a draft that's not, you know, considered to
be particularly deep. They've got two well potential centers and
Colorshni and Colin Potter. Potter may pe Dreckt Moore as

a winger potentially, But you know, these guys just young
could be play out the positioned around up playing both
the rest they pick, well, I think you may be
more excited than I am just because of proximity to
do you right in terms of where he's gonna play.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, he's coming to play in North Dakota this year
and that's where I'm at. So I'm excited to see that,
and I'll be able to watch the progression of the
Flames first round pick up close, and that's that's exciting
for me. I mean, obviously, you know I was, I
was kind of all over the board. I'm not a
huge prospects guy. I'm I'm the first to a minute
like I'm not. I'm not a huge prospects guy. I
don't study prospects. I don't study draft analysis pre draft.

(03:35):
I know my younger players, but not to the extent
that I probably should. But I had watched him play
and I was excited, you know, to see that. First off,
the Dow's committed to North Dakota this year, and then
of course, then it fell into the lap of the
Flames and that's who they pick. And you know what

(03:55):
made me the most happy. I guess about like day
one and the first round was it. You know, we
addressed our needs right and I went into the draft
think and if we if we drafted seven centers, I'm
not pissed, like I'm serious, Like it's darts at a
dartboard as far as I'm concerned. And that's how the
draft is. I mean, we can be excited as we
want about all these guys today, but there's a long

(04:17):
ways and a lot of progression that needs to happen
for this to turn out in a positive way. But
the first round pick, I think it's going to be good.
He's a he's a good player on both ends of
the heights, a responsible player. They can they can put
points up, and that is what the Flames are looking
for right.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Well, big time, especially at the center position. And well,
the two things that stood the most to me was
the desperate need for centers in particular center that you
know will be a right shot, be ideal, but that
wasn't the case. But two really good centers and also
very fast, you know, the pace of play in NHL now,
you can't be a slow plotting team, you know, despite
how it was twenty twenty five years ago. So I

(04:59):
don't think we could have had a better first round
short of, you know, trading some picks and moving up,
which Conrad mentioned he attempted to do at one point.
Obviously that didn't pan out. But I mean, I'll told
I don't think we can ask for much more than
the two players that we've selected, at least at this
point in time.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Does the size of rashni uh make you worry a
little bit at being five and eighty three pounds, and
albeit he is only you know, I mean there's development still.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
So yeah, it doesn't bother mean the least. I'm I mean,
I like some of my defenseman to be a bit bigger.
I used to want the goaltender to be bigger until
dust A Wolf came along or even uc Sorrows. But
size is matters less than it ever has at the
end the game right now. So I mean, what I
prefer to be a few inches taller?

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Probably, But do I care?

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Not?

Really?

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Yeah? No, I like that he's a that he can
handle both ends of the ice.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Has been a responsible player, and I mean last year
in Victoria put up ninety two points and sixty two games.
I guess we can't argue with that. The late round
or the late first round pick of Colin Potter did
surprise me a little bit. I did not I did
not know, and he had not heard anything about the
Flames being that high on him, to the point where

(06:13):
Conry said last night that he was wanting to possibly
move up to protect that they would get him. I
was a little bit surprised on this one, but happy.
I know you did play a little bit of wing
last year for most of the year at Arizona State,
but has potential to be a center, and Conry made

(06:35):
it clear last night that he will be tried at
center and be thought of as a center. As a
prospect for the Flames.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Why wouldn't it be right, absolutely, giving what their needs are,
especially at that age. The funny thing to me is
that actually, just prior to that pick being made, I
saw a lot of people on ex Flames fans kind
of clamoring for them to make that pick, and even
just a few picks prior to that, when he's still available,
it's like, hopefully it's one of you know, say, three players,
and Colin Potter was on a few people's list, So yeah,

(07:01):
yeah again. I mean, I'm excited to see how this
guy plans it as well. I mean, they're both a
ways off. It doesn't address our center needs anytime soon,
but it gives us some hope for the future. And
you know, all told and hindsight's twenty twenty. But when
I think about past drafts, and I won't you know,
last year was exceptional. I thought that right from the
get go. But when you look at the last twenty
twenty five thirty years of Flames drafting, this again feels

(07:23):
like a draft where they really did their homework, made
sensible picks. There's good reason to believe a handful of
these guys will pan out to some extent or another,
you know, versus years gonna buy where we we would
have one NHL out of about every probably six or
seven picks.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Yeah, it seemed like it was trending that way.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
I mean, the nineties were awful, the two thousands were
probably oward, twenty ten's were marginally better, and things have
kind of improved in the in recent years here now,
But I think the first two picks were safe. I
love that we addressed the center position. I can't state
that enough. I think that is so critical. I love

(07:59):
the speed of Potter, he is asked. I watched him
play a few times. He is really really fast, moves
to pack well, got good hockey jeans. His mom was
a really really good hockey player for the US team.
And uh yeah, all good.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah, a hundred percent. Again, it's funny to think of
what these guys could turn out to be. But I
think in terms of, you know, Colin Potter's game. I
watch quite a bit of of highlights of his as well,
like the way he flies to the neutral zone is
it's something to watch, you know. It's he's, as you said,
very very fast. And when you watch the Flames now,
they're not a particularly quick team. Guys like this can

(08:39):
certainly change that. And especially again that center position need
being what it is, I'm really curious to the team.
But the team does for stop gaps, you know, between
the centers they have now and when these guys are
potentially ready to play pro. And that's that's going to
be an interesting discussion as well.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Because it is going to be years and and the
stop gap I'm wondering if you know, when when do
you start addressing the center problem with trades or free agency.
And we'll talk a little bit about the Anderson situation
and maybe that leads to somehow getting a center. I

(09:12):
don't know, and I guess that's all speculation at this
point what will happen. But in the second round, which
was this morning, the Flames picked THEO stock Cilius in
the what was it, the.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Fifty fourth and I have a funny comment about this one.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Another says yep, another much.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
Like, yeah, well it's another center slash winger. Potentially we'll
see what he turns out to be. But Cole Reshnie
going Dakota was one thing that stood to me that
maybe they give you now if I remember the word correctly,
it's called it's a called a a portmanteau, when you
combine a bunch of words together to make a new word.
THEO stock Celius is like combining two of your favorite

(09:54):
Flames ever, Christians Celias, theel three and Christian Celius. Yeah
I feel three, you know what?

Speaker 2 (10:00):
I actually when I wrote this one, I was actually,
I'll know how to spell this one, like you're like,
I love hunter percentage and having him on the show
last year was great, and just getting to know him
a little bit.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
I still can't figure out how to spell this guy's name.
I had to look it up every time.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
It's funny and stock salius. We might even pronounce that
correctly because remember, like you know Oliver Shillington, you know
the Swedish name. People thought it was Kylington because how
it's spelled.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Yeh.

Speaker 3 (10:27):
We'll have to see how some of these names pan out.
But again another TV Yeah, yeah, and they were misleading
all of us, which is you know, that's why it goes.
They have a global game like this.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Right, Names are not always easy. In the third round,
the Flames did move off the center tradition and go
with a defenseman from the US developmental team, Maco Phillips.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
And I don't I I don't know a lot about
this player. I have heard.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
He's a he's a big, tough, strong physicis huge.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
He's a very very mean defenseman six six, I believe,
but definitely known for his toughness and mean streak. Uh kind.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
I believe he's a left wing too, and and he's
gonna fit that left side real well. And and we
need to you know, we when you look at our
our defensive draft, our prospect.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Pool that we have, we.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Have a lot of really really fun offensive defenceman coming up, right,
probably a glutton of offensive defenseman coming up and this
helps build that uh that strong, stay at home, tough
a guy that was in good with with a Breustovitch
or or or a Preak, you know what I mean,

(11:54):
in the in the future. So hopefully that pans out.
I like the thought process there.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
Yeah, some people were bemoaning a little bit because the
likelihood of a defenseman like that panning out and pro
is certainly more rare than you know, your skilled players
their likelihood of making it.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
Well, isn't that what the draft's all about? Though?

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Well, I mean, you gotta take chances here and there.
I mean, but there's arey people bringing up Kigan Kanzig's name,
which was you know, kind of made it kind of
made me to laugh a bit, because I mean, you
have to give these guys a chance, right and anyway,
we'll see how that all goes. But he was definitely
a you know, they got their centers their forwards in
the first three picks, and obviously they deviating from that
and this guy I mean, you're gonna have to ask

(12:35):
me two years when I think of them, because right now,
like it's it's so far off from being illegit nh
all you know ready prospect that it's yeah, hopefully it
pans out because we do need a player like that,
as you just alluded to. But we'll see.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
I had to laugh in the first round, and I
hate to bring up bad, bad flames memories here, but
when they announced Mason West from Medina High School, it
was like off the charts, right, I mean it was.
It was he's a center, he's a good hockey player
with high school hockey here are in Minnesota and next
door to me, and but he's a stud football player too,
and like they were, it would just it was not
off the chart pick. And he's a he's a bigger,

(13:09):
taller guy that hasn't filled it filled out. He's like
six seven, you know, he just he looks super skinny
at two hundred and eighteen pounds. And I was watching
the highlights of him and laughing and I'm just like,
oh my god, this looks just like this reminds me
of the Feaster debacle.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Oh easy, easy. Our viewers just been going up for
this last episode, you know, here and there, and you
might plummet it by bringing his name up.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
So oh, I just what I thought, Chicago pick that guy.
I'm just like, oh that is that is not good.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
Anyway, on the onto the fifth round for the Flames,
one hundred and forty fourth pick overall left winger out
of sous Falls in the USHL, Ethan Wittenbach. He this
guy's like, this guy's got pro level scoring from what
they're saying. I watched some video on him here this morning.
Seem like a solid solid skater.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
I know he dealt with a knee injury this year
I in the USHL but ended up leading Sioux Falls
in scoring. But uh yeah, it'll be interesting to see
when you get down to these rounds. These are it
is a little bit more of a crap shoot, but uh,
you can.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
Really you can really really come into the park, right
like you can really like you know, obviously, Johnny Gudrouz
one the first is going to mind as it always
will when it comes to late round picks or mid
round picks if you want to call that. But yeah,
there's a lot of found gold in these rounds and
banking on these guys that have a lot of skill
and have proven they can score that often does translate
to the next level. So he's a guy gonna be
keep an eye on for sure.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
In the six round, one hundred and seventy six. Over all,
the Flames go another winger, right winger oh play at St.
Andrew's College, heading to Harvard this year.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
Aiden Lane.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Yep, don't know a ton about this guy from what
I've read today. Is a smart power winger with some
good size, So that'll help out, uh, the Flames with
with that aspect. But uh, you know again, it's it is.
It's a long ways down the road, and and and

then that leads us to our seventh round picks, which
is even longer down the road.

And these are.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
These are a couple of guys that that I really
don't have much of a beat on at all as
far as prospects.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
And I'm just pulling up her seventh round here.

Speaker 3 (15:27):
Well, I'm gonna say, but I'll mention just quickly about
Aden Lane too. He was like really really effective when
he joined Brampton towards the end of the season. I
think he was a point of game and very well
known for his for checking ability and ability to retrieve
pucks and puck battles and all those types of intangibles
that you need to win, especially when the games get tight.
So hopefully, you know, he develops as he currently is

(15:48):
and he'll be a very effective player.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
One day, the seventh round, Calgary goes with the defense
from a big guy six four and ninety six pound
Swedish defense from Jacob Leander. And then late in the
day and we touched on this a little bit ago
with moving a pick. Next year, the Flames did pick
I believe it was two hundred and eleventh Detroit. Yeah,

(16:12):
from Detroit left winger six' to one out Of. Russia
metfico AND i don't have a strong take on those
those last two.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
PICKS i. DON'T i haven't had a. Chance they happened
just so.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
RECENTLY i haven't had a chance to watch any videos
or anything act on these two.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
Players, yeah in those late Round russians. TOO i, mean
it's hard to say if or when they know they'll come.
OVER i, mean obviously the team probably had some discussion
with him that he'd be willing to come To North
america's many players dream to, do regardless where they're. From but,
again gonna be a ways off on that one for.
Sure BUT i don't think there is a lot to
know about him at this. POINT i believe he's an
over ager, too is he? Not he? Is he's, eighteen

(16:56):
he'll be actually, Yet well he'll be nineteen In, August so,
yeah he. Was he was an. Overreach, yeah two way
winger known for his playmaking. Ability, yeah he's you, know
produced well year over, year so could turn into. Something
but you, know this is also kind of uncharted territory
for us because only in the last years have we actually,

had you, know so many, picks because we just mortgaged
the future so many goddamn times over the.

Speaker 2 (17:24):
Years, Right so it's two years in a row where
we've had seven plus picks in the, draft and we
we're going. YEARS i feel, like did did you feel
like today when you're watching the, Draft like it's, like
does Z edmund do not have any? Picks Does vegas
not have any? Picks like just there was certain TEAMS
i was, like, man they're not they're not are they
even they're not even?

Know and that was the flames for many. Years and
now we're stockpiling those, cupboards and the cupboards were getting
a little bit more packed with with players that that
can help us olf for the future.

Get ino the next few days in terms of what
these schedule ports are and some of these. PLAYERS i, mean,
overall a good, DAY a good couple of, days you should,
say especially where we weren't really sure what to, expect
BECAUSE i think a lot of people Thought Rasmus anderson
would have been, dealt which would have had draft, implications
but that was not the.

Case so should we talk about the signings and then
we'll talk a little bit About rasmus and what happens
there in the. Future but the signings we had actually
news to start the morning off right away today As
Kevin ball re signs with The Calgary flame six, years
five point three. Five the big defenseman we got in
The markstrom trade really was, good really really good last,
year and the contract is different to. Say in this

first year he gets two point three five million with
a three million dollars signing, bonus and then gets five
point three five in the following two through. Six he
has an eight team no trade for years three through.
SIX i was impressed with this play last. Year he's
exactly what we need to help supplement some of these
offensive defensemen that we have coming up the.

I didn't mind the. TOURNAMENT i didn't mind the, avy did.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
YOU i love both of, them and takes some right
into his prime, years such that his contract would expire
when you think he's thirty one the. Cap that's super,
reasonable especially considering it's going. Up this is a player
that was very positive About calgary and vocal about the
fact he wanted to be. Here, YEAH i, mean it
makes all the sense in the role to. Me AND

i really felt that had he not been injured this
season with the, concussion WHICH i believe was Against, minnesota
The flames would have made the. Playoffs his play was
good enough that he could, have you, know garned them
a few more points on the board just with how
strong his defensive play. Was they of all the guys
that missed time this, year you, Know connor's area being
another really important, ONE i think balls had the biggest

impact on the team's success or lack there. Of. Yeah
SO i love the deal all. AROUND i think it's.
Fantastic it's really and it's a really positive thing to,
see especially when the fans AND i think ourselves, included
we're kind of hoping for And anderson trade or some
other kind of trade. Movement it's positive to see somebody
that you, want you, know as part of your, team
decide to stick around in the midst of expecting something
else to, have.

RIGHT i, MEAN i was happy to see this side
and THAT i was kind of gonna start to get
a little bit worried that it hadn't happened by, now
AND i don't, know it started my morning off off
pretty damn. Good, yeah, yeah who signs to quick talk
About since we last, Talked Dryden hunt signs a two
year two way deal for eight twenty five And Justin

kirkland signs a one, year one way deal for nine hundred.
THOUSAND i am dying to hear your thoughts on both of.

THEM i have a little bit of a bias at
times WHEREIN i want the team to move on to
certain people WHO i just see as, tweeeners AND i
don't often give enough respect to the role they, played
And Dryden hunts one of those. Players he was good
when he played for The. Flames he was very vialable
with The. Wranglers so my first thought was like, Why
but Then i'm, like, okay you know, What, no this

doesn't make. SENSE i mean he's been a good soldier
for the team and it could fill into a pinch
kind of. Thing IS i feel like we say about
a lot of flames right. Now but, yeah, no no
issue with. THAT i would have been fine with one,
year but two is. Fine and then The kirkland, situation
especially after it was announced that the teams were the
team was rightly moving on From Tyson berry uh and
also moving On Fanthony, mantha WHO i actually liked quite

a bit and was hopefully he might get like maybe
ANOTHER pto of all the guys that got hurt or
didn't play, Well, Kirkland kirkland deserved another. CHANCE i, mean
even if he just you, know shot in the, shootouts
he's worth the contract they gave, him.

Right you, know WHEN i saw The Dryden, HUNT i
laughed and thought of you right away BECAUSE i know
your feelings on. That and but What i've always thought
About Dryden hunt is like he's not gonna be a
game changer, ever but you know, what you can put
him in the lineup and a pinch when there's an
injury or. Something he's, safe, Right he's just gonna for
the most part.

And he and he's safe for.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
You but WHAT i did like about this is this
kind of pegs him as a leader in for The,
wranglers maybe a captain assistant captain role where he's gonna
have THE nhl, experience but yet be, solid solid player
in THE a and really lead some of these younger
players and help them move up the. Ranks AND i

know a lot OF ahl teams have those, guys AND
i think that's super smart in developing the young. Players
as for The, Kirkland i'm interested to see how this plays.
Out like he definitely could be our fourth line center this,
year AND i would have no problem with.

THAT i JUST i. DON'T i.

Don't as much AS i liked WHAT i saw last,
YEAR i don't feel LIKE i got enough time to
get a full beat on him. Yet but the WAY
i looked at it is what's the worst that, happens
so we put him on? WAIVERS i, mean, YEAH i
mean he's JUST i, mean if if there's another spot
person that can move into that role and do a better,
job so he goes on.

Waivers BUT i think there's.

UPSIDE i feel like there's, upside AND i feel like
he could fit that fourth line role in the center
position very. Well and like you, said he's like an
ace in the hole on the. Shootouts so how do
you go?

Wrong, YEAH i, MEAN i think it's also big reason
why they're moving on from From Kevin rooney as. Well
was taking a chance on On kirkland to play that.
Role BUT i, mean the guy's BEEN i didn't even
want to. Come they can't really come a late blower
because he never really. Bloomed he blew his knee out. Right,
Yeah so it's such a small sample. Size i'm cautiously,

optimistic but you know WHAT i saw.

HIM i.

Loved i've watched those shootout, goals god knows how many,
times and it makes all the sense of the roll
to give, it give it a. Chance like you, said
there's no risk, involved so that why not keep them?

Around and we touched on The wranglers and over the
break we had here since our last regular, episode which
is one a week and a half right, Now Brett
sutter was named head coach of the H O. WRANGLERS
i don't know, why BUT i felt LIKE i was.
SURPRISED i, MEAN i wasn't unhappy about. It what were your, THOUGHTS.

I, MEAN i wasn't surprised at always been gearing towards
that position for quite some time. NOW i guess one
of the biggest REASONS i wasn't really surprised was, that you,
know with all the shuffling on coaching, staffs like with you,
Know trent call having a full time this with The flames,
now it's like somebody knew was going to be coming
in and they had to kind of rebuild that. Bench
AND i, Mean cutter knows the whole organization so, well

in the players so. WELL i mean it's kind of
a natural fit to give him a, shot.

Right, YEAH i think he'll do, Fine And i'm really
excited to see what we get all these players move
up this. Year where where does The hansa go where you,
know there's so many players that are going to have
the opportunity this year with The wranglers to uh to
really stake their claim to earning a spot or a
