Speaker 1 (00:28):
Welcome Flains fans to another edition. Oh Flames Unfilter are
hosted by myself, Brad Rude and Kyle Lewis, talking Flames
hockey every week. Kyle, another week is past and even
be possible that we have gotten I can't say worse
more controversial? Is that? Is that a good way of
(00:49):
putting it? Or maddening?
Speaker 2 (00:52):
I don't know if there's a word in English language
that's strong enough to describe, you know, the sentiment that
I think everybody's feeling at this point is there?
Speaker 1 (01:02):
You know? I remember when every year, I mean, we've
we've done this pod through some pretty bad years, and
we've done it through some pretty good years, and it
seems like more of a mental grind and struggle when
it's when when we're when we're struggling on ice, there's
(01:22):
just less to talk about. There's less hope, and that's
what we that's what we thrive on as sports fans.
And I've enjoyed doing the podcast through the goods and
the bads, but it's really damn fun to do it
when it's good. I worried a little bit this year
about what are we going to talk about? Right? I
(01:42):
knew the rest miss Anderson thing would be probably something
we would talk about weekly. I knew there'd be a
few things, right, I saw about one percent of what
we've seen come our way this year. I did not
have this on the angle card. I didn't and it
(02:03):
just keeps getting more bizarre every single week.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, I it's funny, Like, just the way this season's gone,
I wouldn't have expected. I don't think anybody could have
possibly expected that type of Well, there's two interviews really
that we're gonna have to dissect a bit here with
Dom Maloney and I honestly I was thinking about this,
(02:28):
and I think I tweeted this. I don't know that
I've ever seen a worse media availability from any hockey
personality ever in terms of how to piss off your
fan base.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
You know, today when we were are not today this week?
When I was, I usually write notes down during the
week of like stuff we should touch base on, right,
and started off with Beecher and PreK, and it went
into the Hansac new us stock Silly's problems, and then
(03:04):
it was the Maloney interview. Then it was like some
talk about re signing Anderson, uh, and you know, and
then the Coronado hit and it's like, holy Kyle, we
got a lot to talk about today.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah, I don't know. I'm not even trying to approach
this show because I mean, the the main topic we know,
we've we've already just touched on a little bit, but
there's a lot of things we got to kind of
blow through here.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
So if you want to get to the main first,
or what do you want to where do you want
to go, because it's gonna go all over the place.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
I guess we'll start with that because I mean, we
want to get people into what we're talking about, you know,
bright and early in this one. So you know, as
I just said with regards to Don Maloney's comments, and
I still can't entirely understand why Maloney, is president of
Hockey Ops, was the guy that got trotted out to
deliver this message. Less is more would have been the
responsible way to approach this. Nothing should have been said
(04:01):
or something the effective we're evaluating things or but man,
he went balls deep into a direction that nobody wants
to hear of or believe.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Were you Okay? I guess my My first thing is
like I always think that when people do things, whether
it's an organization or a human being. It could be
could be me or you. Right, we always have a motive.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yeah, generally speaking.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Yet usually we have a motive. And that doesn't mean
it's bad or it doesn't mean it's good. It just
means we have there's a reason for every conversation.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
I started to think about this, and I had heard
in doing my research on this, that uh that Sportsnet
had asked for Conroy or somebody for kind of a
quarter season interview, and they said, well, we would be
happy to provide you Don maloney, m and and so
(05:01):
what what night was that? Thursday night?
Speaker 2 (05:04):
I believe so.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Yes, So during the first intermission we get uh, Brendan
Parker interviewing Don Maloney and I don't know, man, it
just went a lot of directions. I don't even I
can't remember how many minutes long. It was maybe five
minutes tops, and it seemed like it was a ton
(05:27):
to unpack, right, Well.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
I mean the length of it was completely undermined by
the content of it, which just bizarre. I mean, have
you ever heard of a professional sports scene being so
out of touch? Honestly? Okay, So I'm not a hard
time even picking where to get into all the things.
He said, I'm pretty well known at this point, right.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
I honestly I thought about calling you and saying, hey,
do you want to sit down and like go through
this question by question on the Eric Francis interview, which
is a secondary interview, which we'll get to that, which
has too parts, which has two parts. Either there's just
a lot to unpack, and I think it's dually just
I mean, it's been unpacked through multiple media sources through
the last five days, four days. I think we need
(06:15):
to just touch on on the key parts and the
people can listen to the interviews themselves. But uh, I
think I think our listeners probably want to hear like
our take and and our thoughts on not each question,
but the key the key questions. And let's start with
the interview that happened on TV and we'll get into
(06:38):
Eric Francis, which I think the Eric Francis ones are
even a little bit more telling. But he he didn't, okay,
so he painted a picture of basically, they don't they
don't see any problems, they're not making any changes, and
(07:00):
this is the role we need to take. And I
wondered though, as soon as it was over. First of all,
his interview or his interview skills were we're not good
that night, And I don't know if it is because
he was.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
They've never been good. If you ever watched the man
be interviewed, he's he's not. He's not somebody want to
put in front of the poet.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
No, I know, but he's not usually that bad. And
like what my first thought was when he was that
bad was, man, it's this guy just like a sacrificial
lamb that they just sent out there to.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
It sure appeared that way. It certainly did. I mean,
I'm not really sure how else to interpret it, because
I do understand. I mean, Craig Conroy is as appable
and likable and as well spoken to Jim as there
is in the league, and I have to believe that
he would have spawned a much more conservative, veiled message,
(07:59):
not one that you know, doubled down on how terrible
this team is and how terrible they intend to stay.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Quite frankly, I got a theory though after listening to it.
It's something sparked in my head. Two weeks ago when
the guys from the Red Mile Rundown joined us. Robert
Munich said something that that interview, and I've heard him
say it since on Flames postgame shows, but he said
(08:29):
something in that interview on our show that's really got
me thinking. He said, when we talked about Craig Conry
not getting re signed, and of course I'm paraphrasing, he
said he was worried about how upper management viewed the
success of Conry and maybe that's not why he's re signed.
(08:57):
I thought a little bit deeper into that. I think
there's some val did you do that? But I also
wonder is Craig Conroy contemplating whether he wants to re
sign based off the direction that the ownership is pushing.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Forgive me because somebody twittered this year the day but
in the same vein that I think you're touching on,
somebody reminded us on X earlier in the week that
one of Brad tree Living's conditions of resigning with the
team when he did was that he had complete control
over roster decisions and that Ken King was not to interfere.
(09:40):
It's well known that ownership interferes with Flames management and
always has, and I mean most companies that's the case.
You know, whether it's for better or for worse, whether
that can mean something as simple as, you know, minding
your pennies or being involved in day to day transactions,
depending on how things are being run.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
I think we may be and I'm not defending ownership here,
but I am going to throw this out there. We
maybe think that they're more involved than we think.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
I think there are a lot more involved than most
other teams the NHL, based on all the stories have
accumulated over the years and the general direction of this team.
That's my firm belief, and there's evidence to support it.
There's reasons at times to believe gms have more autonomy
and Calgary than maybe I think they do. But to
your point, Conroy, I mean, he's from New York and
(10:30):
he loves Calgary, and he has loved Calgary ever since
he was traded there from Saint Louis back in two
thousand and one. But it's very possible that he may
not want to stick around if the desires of ownership
run counter to what he's trying to accomplish. And this
is the first time since he took the job where
we're starting to believe that maybe the case, and that
(10:51):
has been reported at times that there's a bit of
a rift between ownership and Conroy's plan. How true that is,
we can't say for sure, but it's certainly up a
fair bit in the last few weeks.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
It's got me wondering, well, how can.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
You not wonder right now when Don Maloney's the guy
that gets you know, shoved out to give those interviews,
those media availabilities, availabilities, and then you know Conray is
nowhere to be seen. It does seem a little strange
for sure.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Well, and Connor has been nowhere to be seen since
the interview. Yeah, And one thing that surprised me is, like,
you know, there was a lot of backlash, a lot,
probably the most.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
It hasn't stopped since, No, And.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
It's probably the most angry I've seen this fan base have.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Can you blame them?
Speaker 1 (11:41):
You know, Oh, I don't blame them. I was just
as angry.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
I'm still I'm still angry. And it's a weird man
like trying to start through these emotions too, Like are
you also having like that? You know, at the time
of this recording, you know, the Flames running a three
game win streak. Can you still like to see your
team win? Even though you know, it runs counter to
what they what they need, so to speak.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Yeah, Yeah, it's been some different feelings watching Flames games.
And I'm gonna i'll paint a picture of last night.
They're painting. They're playing the hated Canucks in my in
my mind, right yeah, And as I watched that game,
and as I watch Calgary dominate, I'm sitting there going,
(12:23):
this Vancouver team is in wayy worse shape than the
Calgary team. Yeah, think about it. They got a superstar
right in Paterson. It's not a superstar anymore, but he's
being paid to be a superstar. You could say we
have that in Hubert, though. They have a goalie that
(12:43):
they just re signed who's injured for his what seems
like thirtieth time.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Yeah, he's made a glass, that is how it seems.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Unfortunately, they've got a guy and Evander Kine that looks
like much like everywhere else he's been that nobody likes him.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Well that this is what I was going to say
right there on Kane. So I was taxed. My buddy
Matt mccarro's who I They were both in the same industry. Anyway,
He's a knuck season ticket older and I said, man,
is Kane ever stupid when he took that on sports
from like penalty for running his mouth? And Matt said, sure,
ish auld to the league. Astid agreed, He said, fans
hate him. I'm sure his teammates do too.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
I they have everywhere right. Why would it change? Right
you think that the Calgary ownership group or leadership group
or management or whatever you want to call him today
have made some blunders go down the road to Vancouver.
They I honestly believe they're probably more likely to get
(13:39):
a top three pick than we are, which infuriates me
in a way in a season that mathematically I don't
see how we'd ever get into the playoff spots, even
though I look at the standing stay and I think,
oh geez, all we're doing is oh, we're killing the
ownership hope Yeah, And I oh it just you know,
(14:03):
and then you go back to the Maloney thing and
then he he he basically gets on with Eric Francis
and does a two part interview, and Eric asked, I mean,
you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna say something here.
So many people in the Calgary fan base have ripped
on Eric Francis. This may be the best thing Eric
(14:23):
Francis has ever done.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
This verybell could be. Unfortunately, I can still see the
stuff that he that he tweets, even though he's had
me blocked for two years or more.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
He asked all the questions we wanted to hear. Oh
he did. He asked the ball.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
He did a great job with it. I would I
wouldn't speak that per sent. My only issue with Eric
Francis is the way that he bates players, the way
he would aggravate them. And I didn't always find that
was part of him doing his job. It was him
just being just a pain in the ass for no
good reason, right, But I mean in this case, and
I mean that's gonna happen in journalism. But in this
case he did a fantastic job. And I mean, and
it's been really interesting to see in the time in
(14:58):
the day since you know, the Frank Saravelli's of the
world and Darren draggers everybody else of course, chiming in
Elliott Friedman sarah Velli was scathing and what he had
to say about it, which I think is great. You know,
I think the more people in the hockeymuny that recognize
how ridiculous. This all is the better.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
Frank summed it up very well today. Yeah, I sit
in and I think Elliott Friedman's done a pretty good
job of it too, and he's got to walk a
tighter line, right. It's interesting, it's.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Yeah, and like there's a I don't know, this is
where I get frustrated. And I can deal with a
lot of frustration lately, mind you, but there's there's a
lot of dummies in that front office. I feel guys
that have been in there, you know, I've mentioned before
like I'm not a not a huge fan of some
guys have been in the office for I feel way
too long. I've been towing the same line forever, and
I made a comedy of the day. I'm starting to wonder.
(15:50):
You know, Maloney was involved in all those garbage teams
and Phoenix that couldn't get aything done. Now, mind you,
they had major issues there too in terms of cash flow.
So I don't dump that all on him. But it's
again this feeling of this these older hockey dudes that
just won't go away, that don't know what they're doing anymore,
if they ever truly did. And I'm not saying I
have the answer to God knows, I don't, but I
know the direction they should be going in, and this
(16:12):
runs counter to it.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
I don't. I don't. You know, I've always been a
non tank guy. I've always been a non tear down guy.
But I do think that you need to get it
down to a point you can't get rid of all
the veterans. You can't. That does, but I don't.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
I don't think anybody's advocating for that though.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Right No, I don't either.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
I agree with you, and I think the dichotomy though,
and forgive me because I gotta really gotta spit this
piece out. The dichotomy of playoff slash Cup contender, uh,
you know versus tanking. There's a lot, a lot, a
lot of space in between those two a ton, right,
So the suggestion of just full on tank and trade
(16:52):
everybody was never realistic, and it's not even an effective
way to run a hockey team necessarily. But the idea
is asset management, and the way the Flames are talking
about how they plan to manage their assets is the
dumbest strategy of all thirty two teams in the league.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
Right now, I think, you know, I'm not saying I'm
the smartest hockey guy. But I sit in I look
at this roster, and I look at ages, and I
look at contracts, and I look at the direction, and
I look at like, hey, now, now's the time to
I thought last year, at the end of the year
was the time to maximize an Ozenkadre. I still believe
that's true. Boy, there isn't a hotter time to maximize
(17:27):
the rassmus Anderson than there is right now. I would
explore Blake Coleman as much as I would not be
upset if he didn't get moved. I think right now
is the time to maximize those assets. And I think
where we're at, where the direction we're going, I we
need to we need to capitalize on this. And one
of the things in the Maloney conversation that got me
(17:49):
the most upset is hearing him say I think we
need more Coudrey's not. Well, you know what, I agree
with you, mister Maloney. I agree with you we need
more cop end players, but I don't need them at
thirty five years old.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
No, No, And that's just it. So what blows my mind,
and it's the simplest statistic of all is age, so
they're like shocked, Oh, we've had such a terrible start.
Like your best quote unquote best players are on a
year older, in their mid thirties. What did you think
was gonna happen? Like what you think it's that Blake
Coleman's having a remarkably good year, you know, Huberto has
(18:26):
been good. Caadrey's been good. But the expectation that this
group was as good as last year was predicated on
the players in their mid thirties being as good as
they were and the younger guys being better. Well, all
the younger guys struggled to start at the season, Coronado's
heated up significantly and Zoriy finally got a goal in Vancouver.
Always yeah, like they're starting to turn corners now. But
(18:46):
the expectation this team was going to be as good
and I was guilty of it as well. I was,
but to be as good or better it wasn't all
that realistic when you factor in all these different things,
and I try to find humor and bad situations, and
the thing that I can't help but laugh at in
all of this is that in the same week as
(19:08):
this absolute ship storm is Rasmus Anderson is the first
start of the week in the NHL.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
That takes me to the next topic. You know what,
it come on before we forget's, we're gonna roll through
two X factors that have to do with the Maloney
and then we're gonna get into the Anderson. Yea, let's
go with the first one because these are both really
really good X factors that came out on on X
this week and kind of summed up this whole Maloney
interview type fan bates thought. And the first one comes
(19:39):
from Alex Russo and I read this one and I
highlight it right away, and it said, stop stop going
to games, stop spending money on this team. It's the
only fucking way these guys will learn. No one wants
to watch this ship. People will watch a team with young,
exciting players, give us the rebuild we want. I promise
you we will support it. Now. I agree with this
(20:02):
take completely. I don't want to see I don't know.
I've always been super sensitive since the whole Houston thing.
I don't want people to not go to games. Yeah,
I want to because because you know what, as much
as we can get mad at ownership, this ownership doesn't
need this team here, they can do it somewhere else.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Too, So that's scary and to judge just jumping on
your point there too. And thanks Alex. This Alex is
a great follow on X that's at a russo underscore nine. Well,
any team is very any storry. Any city is very,
very fortunate to have a professional sports team, especially a
small market team like the Calgary Flames win a big Jets,
(20:42):
you know, so we don't want to take that for granted, right,
So you have to be very careful with this type
of strategy. But I do agree wholeheartedly that, yeah, that
people will support a young, exciting team.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
But I did I did flag this though, and the
reason I wanted to say, you know, don't stop going,
don't stop supporting the Flames, but scream at the top
of your lungs. I do believe. I do believe ownership
will have to get this figured out, and screaming at
the top of your lungs in a in a market
as small as Calgary and everybody's doing it will get through.
(21:17):
They feel the heat. They're hearing this, right. They may
not be answering it, they're.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
Hearing it absolutely absolutely.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Let's slide into the number number two here.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
All right, So this one's from stinky Man at Little
Moser Gaming. The Chicago Blackhawks won three Stanley Cups rebuilt
and already have a better team than the Flames before
we could even touch the conference finals. Don't be fooled
by the propaganda the ownership group feeds you. I hadn't
thought of any of this in these types of terms,
but it's so true. The Blackhawks won three Cups rebuilt
(21:52):
and are already better.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
And didn't probably rebuilt the way they should they.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
And they were they were abysmal figures. Yeah, Like back
when Bill Wurtz wouldn't broadcast games in Chicago because he
thought it deterred people from going to the actual games, Like.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
Even when they got badar they surrounded him and buy
some really questionable decisions.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
But don't they all do that now? I mean, like,
so the Blackhawks around the guys like, you know, like
Tyler Bertuzzi. The Sharks have Tyler Toffoli, Like guys that
are past their prime but still effective. Right, that's kind
of how you get those guys through their first couple years.
You learn from the pros, Nick Felino and Chicago is
a good example. Of that too, But when you look
(22:33):
back on those Cup wins, it was you know, Tave's Kine,
Keith Saybrook, Corey Crawford, and then you look at you know,
later on now they have badar like there's always star
superstar players involved.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Right now, there's a first number one overall involved, right yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
I mean it's it should seem pretty obvious, but I
mean you when when people get frustrated, they really dig
even more into the futility that has been the majority
of the flames exist, which is what raises so many questions,
especially when you go out there and flagrantly, you know,
wave the flag of we're not dead yet, when it's
very clear you're dead. Weird And now and now the
concern is this three game win Street is just going
(23:11):
to throw everybody into a tissy because I was actually
going to think they're a decent team, because lately they
have been a decent team.
Speaker 1 (23:16):
Got it's got me scared because I look at the
standings here today and gosh, with this three game we're
not the worst team anymore. And it is November twenty fourth,
we're six points out of a wildcard spot.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
Just so ridiculous.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
We're six it's out of a wildcard spot. How is
that even possible?
Speaker 2 (23:50):
It's a quarter a mark of the season. That's hound's possible.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
So now let's go into the topic. You transition to
and I and I stopped here. That's Anderson and I
have a question, M. I've been thinking about it a
lot this week. What if Rasmus Anderson doesn't want to
leave Calgary?
Speaker 2 (24:14):
Can I be candid my response? I don't give a
shit what Rasmus Anderson wants. I give a shit about
what's best for the Calgary Flames. Rasmus Anderson will be
fine wherever he goes.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Why do I keep hearing this all the time on
nine sixty? Well, no players are saying they want out,
So why do we care what the players want in Calgary?
Why do we keep hearing the phrase what the players want?
Why do we keep hearing that will never be a
(24:48):
winning organization with that attitude? Ask the Vegas School of Knights?
Do they care? Man?
Speaker 2 (24:54):
You love to bring that up?
Speaker 1 (24:55):
It's the truth though, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
I know, But I think that's part of the alluring
get players to come to Calgary is that they have
so much control over their future once they've signed the
knotted line is how it seems.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
I know it'd be great if we are hoisting cups
right this system we're using isn't working. Being the nice
guy isn't working. Now. I'm not saying you got to
be some vicious asshole.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
But again, it's asset management. Rasmus Anderson's time as a
Calgary Flame needs to come to a conclusion because there
are better options, potentially likely in the pipeline, and he's
still a very valuable asset. And this is what I
was saying on X earlier is that even though the
trade market is slow right now and there's not a
lot of really good players that are available, Calgary has
(25:41):
the players every Cup contender wants, which means guys like Anderson,
Kadre and Coleman.
Speaker 1 (25:45):
So maximize this. I don't care. I hate to say
this because Blake Coleman's been one of the best guys
ever is a Calgary Flame. I'm sorry, man, if I
got a spot for you. He doesn't have a no
move clause, does he? I don't. I don't remember, I
don't think.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
I don't believe.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
So if if something comes up, I'm moving him.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
I'd love to trade him to Dallas.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
Great, right, Like I I don't understand they like he said,
well we we would have to talk to Coleman. Why
do we howays have to go get I I don't know.
I don't know. I don't understand this organization. And now
for Asmus, Anderson's the number one start of the week.
(26:28):
He's got nine points in his last four games. He's
finally playing like the Rasmus we saw two years ago,
like maximize, go make it happen.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
Well, we were concerned for a bit that his play
was so terrible teams were gonna catch on and offer
a lot less. But he's flipped that script. But then
that's again the danger becomes the team may look to
resign him, which would be a horrible, horrible move.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Oh, speaking of horrible, the honsick injury has turned into
a surgery and six.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
Months season Ovah, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (27:04):
This guy's I hate it because I hate tracking injuries
on players, but it's it's a little bit worrisome. The
first one I don't worry about that was a skate
cut back in twenty two. I believe you lie. He
missed like forty plus games and he had an abdominal
injury twenty three to twenty four. I was like thirty
plus games and last year's concussion and that was like
(27:26):
sixty games.
Speaker 2 (27:27):
Yeah, oh, man, freak accident. I was a little pissed
to see people blaming back and forward. It's just a
freak accident, like I said, but it sucks at somebody
else's opportunity. The big the hope is that honsec can
come back from the strong. I don't even know what
the sort of to say, what the surgery was. I
don't believe they did.
Speaker 1 (27:44):
I oh, I'm guessing the shoulder. I mean, I'm just
pure speculation.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
Yeah, I think we're all speculating shoulder. I mean not
unlike Alex Romanoff and on the island right, which I'll
seguez to our next topic when we get there. But yeah,
it sucks. Tonsick was really short of come to his
own that people thought he was some the you know,
the brink of breaking out offensively, and it's it's super shitty.
It's a devastating injury and devastating for a young player
like that. So hopefully he comes back strong and wish
(28:09):
him all the best in his recovery.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
My other injury news this week, Perrek is progressing still
in the week to week category, but the Calgary Flames
are announced that they would be loaning him to Team
Canada for the World Juniors, and I can't wait to
get your thoughts on that.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
They should have been there last year, first of all,
And I think it's the best quality of competition a
guy like that can have in terms of competition that
he can maybe thrive against handle on a shift to
shift basis, because I think in the NHL, as good
as he's been, and don't get wrong, he's been quite
good in the little time he's played in terms of
possession metrics and driving play, he still has a ways
(28:50):
to go in that gap between junior hockey and the
NHL for him has been pretty evan, particularly in terms
of what he's handled physical play, which is why he
got hurt again. So I think it's the best thing
for him to build his confidence. This Flames team is
going nowhere whether he plays or he doesn't at this
particular juncture. So I'm happy with it. How do you
feel about it? I?
Speaker 1 (29:09):
You know what, I hate to say this because I
don't want him in the NHL right now because he's
not physically ready yet, and and I hate saying that
I do think he's going to be a decent player
one day, and I but I you know, it's unfortunate
the way the CBA timing is, and I'd love to
see him in the American Hockey League. I don't know
(29:30):
that he doesn't come back, go to the World Juniors,
come back from the World Juniors, go on a conditioning
stint in the American Hockey League, and then they work
him in on the NHL through the latter part of
the season and monitor some situations and times. And I
think that's the best way to handle it. I think
that's the best way to work him into this league
and his work is cut out for him next summer.
(29:52):
Getting bigger, stronger and faster faster is probably not a problem.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
But bigger stronger, right, Yeah, I'm sure that he will
all do time. He's still a teenager. Yeah, I think
all told now that we kind of know where he's at,
this is the best possible scenario for him, given what's
available in terms of options.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
This week, waiver claim the Flames claimed John Beecher off
waivers from Boston. I've been dying to hear what your
thoughts on this one are.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Two well Richard bullet Er ups are ops manager reached
out to me and he's pretty excited. He s to
die hard Bruins fans, so he was. He was excited
for us, but upset to see him leaving Boston. Big dude,
good on face offs and fast, all good things. People
made a little much of the waiver claim, as if
(30:39):
the Flames are expecting it to be more than what
it is, which I don't think is a case. It
was just they had the first right to make waiverclaim,
and I think it's a smart one. And he's actually
looked pretty good in the games he's played, So.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
You like this move, huh.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
I don't think it ever hurts to acquire a young,
big center at the NHL level who can skate. The
offense is essentially non existent. But considering I expect and
hopefully some people moved out in the next few months,
I don't mind this player at all. Is a stop
gap and maybe he's a long term fourth line center.
We'll see see a J.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
Greer all over again.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
He's got more upside than Greer. Yeah, I firmly believe that,
and I liked Greer, don't get me wrong, but yeah, no,
I think Beacher's gonna be He's been good so far,
and there's no reason not to make a claim like that.
In my book, What's ahead You've.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
Been waiting for this one? Is he? Is he col Win?
Speaker 2 (31:30):
I hate to say this to you of all people,
to think he's better than col.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
Schwin, But okay, well we'll see, we'll see.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Yeah. Hey, you know, anytime you acquire a new player,
there's always that little tinge of excitement, no matter who
it is.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
One that I'm not gonna lie. I wasn't. I wasn't
super excited.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
But hey, it pushed Ryan Lomberg got to line up
for a couple of games, which.
Speaker 1 (31:51):
No kidding, you know what. You know what, it did
make me a little excited though, because you know what,
my brain started thinking, hmmm, do we need a center
to a lot? Everybody up one for Kadriy being gone?
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Very possibly, yeah, very possibly. It just gives you more options.
It's more depth, which is a word that gets overused,
especially in hockey, I find but I you know, I again,
I like the move. It's low key, it's smart, hoping
the only move they make this season, I'm sure, but
it's uh no, it's it's a nice move and he's
fitting really well so far.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
If it's the only move we make this season, I'm
gonna have a rough goal.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
We're all gonna have a rough go And that's the
concern after the comments from Maloney that maybe that is
what happens. But again, you know, i'd also just to
cap that conversation I tweeted, as many others had as well.
I mean, it's far from just my sentiment, but watch
the actions, not the words. I don't know why I'm
inclined to agree with you that they kind of stuck
him out there as a sacrificial lamb. I don't know
(32:48):
if he was trying to be like way too positive
or what the hell he thought he was doing, but
it was the wrong message. It was a stupid, stupid move,
a Pierre disaster. But ultimately, we're gonna judge this team
by what they do, not but what they say. So
if we if if three o'clock and the trade deadline
passes Eastern Standard time and we haven't moved, you know,
at least the three guys we've talked about, at least
two of those three, we get a serious fucking problem.
(33:09):
The Louisvis have then in the most angry version of
Flames Unfiltered you'll ever hear in.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
A live version. Probably it will be a live version
that day. Yeah, Oh, I don't know. I I you
know what. And I That's what I kept telling myself
to call myself down on this is I'm like, they
can't come out and say they're gonna do all these moves.
They can't come out and say that.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
No, but all you have to say it's so i'd
ben I've done it. People do it all the time.
I have to say, is you know what, it's not
the start of the season we wanted. We have some
guys in expiring contracts will be very attractive in the trademark.
If it makes sense, we'll have to explore and if
we're happy with where we're at, and then we come
to terms of players and so be it. Just give
a nice neutral answer.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
That's all you gotta say.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Yeah, like, it's not anyway. I have a question for you.
And I had expected we segue into this earlier, and
I was dead wrong because I can't always read you,
which will make this fun. Do you think ascars a
little bit simpler? I guess we all saw Miko Ranton
and crushed Matt Coronatto from behind and basically break his
(34:12):
nose in Mangla's face, you know, mere days after he
destroyed Alex Romanov's shoulder with another dirty hit. Yeah, do
you think Miko Ranton is a dirty player at this point?
Is he hearing that label?
Speaker 1 (34:24):
Yeah? Yeah? I don't know how many times this week
I asked myself, why in God's Green Earth is a
twelve million dollar goal scorer out there running people guys?
Speaker 2 (34:40):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Like what he did to Coronado was brutal. Yeah, well,
what he did to Romanov was something from another level.
And he's gonna miss six months.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
Yeah, it's and I was really pissed when after he
got the compulsory mandatory one game suspension that should have
extended the five games, they did not send a message
to this play at all.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
So well they sent a message to the league, right,
because let's let me let me play this out for you.
If Adam Klapka runs Tyler Sagan like Randon and ran Coronado,
how many games does Adam Klapka get for? I know
(35:21):
that's the problem. Yeah, yeah, because I so many people.
I had messages right after the hit and I said
it'll be one game. I think I even put it
on X it'll be one game because I knew that
they're not going to suspend their star if it was.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Man, you were mad.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
It's ridiculous people.
Speaker 2 (35:41):
Sometimes people don't have to wonder who's tweeting from the
flames unfiltered X account when they read some of these comments.
I forget what you said. What was it you said?
You like it, not that you wanted you want to
don't want blood, but like you wanted the piece of
them or whatever. M colele Brad's fired up.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
Well, you know, well that goes back to to what
Patrick Wallace said. No, what I said. Yeah, I said,
I don't want him to get a game misconduct. I
want him to have to face the makers out there, right,
I want him to have to face the hell he
got to leave the game and go shower and have
a cocktail. Yeah right. You know, Patrick Waugh freaked out.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
And was very good at Patrick Waugh has always been
very good at freaking out.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
And he threatened him. He said he's not gonna make
it through next game, is what was reported. Yeah, and
I'm tuning into that game next time, Hell or high water.
I'm watching it, and I'm gonna watch next time Calgary
plays Dallas because this guy's gonna have to start paying
for this because he elbowed somebody like a couple of
weeks ago right in the face too. Who was that?
(36:45):
While Yeah, why all of a sudden did you ever
hear about this before?
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Well, when you watch back some of the tape from
the last few seasons, you actually you get your eyes
open to how much dirty stuff he's done. I don't know,
I mean, I but this is a problem, and this
has been said before. When the NHL doesn't do their
job protecting the players and throwing the book of players
who deserve like Retinan does, players will take it to
their own hands. I mean, maybe the Flames recall Alex
(37:13):
Glant for a game. Wouldn't that be fun?
Speaker 1 (37:16):
Well? But can he stay? Can he stand up right now?
It wasn't he the guy that got into the big
tilt the other night and got Kot?
Speaker 2 (37:23):
I think I got Kyote. He held his own against
the dude that was somebody gaggered off the ice, though,
so do if he bought someone that big. I mean,
the guy's tough as nails. But ultimately, what you know
whatever the case, like, they got to get a handle
this type of stuff. And thank god Coronado's okay because
his face got maggled and he's been on a heater
and that could have been Romanov all over again, very
very easily.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
God Kylon falling into a giant trap. Falling into a
giant trap, because I there's so many things the last
couple of games that have went our direction, you know,
like the goal scoring and Cornado not being hurt and
things like that, and they're going, oh, we're getting further
away from that number one pick. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
I never thought I heard you say that, but here all.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
People, right of all people. Did you think it would
be me saying that?
Speaker 2 (38:11):
Definitely not.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
But I just look at it as we have an
opportunity this year. This year we put a Verhaf on
our lineup, or a McKenna or you know, whoever steps
up in the second half of the season. Holy Kyle,
you add that to our roster, and then we have
another first round pick. I believe we have Vegas's pick
this year too, Holy cats, Like we can start building
(38:35):
and we got Cole Rashnie coming up. We got a mean,
you guys, this isn't too far off. Even if half
of our he had a great ot winner of the
other night, like we got Griddin's lighting up DHL, this
could come together quicker even if only half of them work, right,
If half of them work.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
Yeah, look at our golden too.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
That's what I'm saying. Like, we have a lot of
things kind of chips falling right, we get a first
round of number one, number number one or number two
pick this year. This isn't a five to six year thing.
This is a three four year thing.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
And that was always the idea. That's what it was
designed to be.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
I feel it's like when the arena opens. That's when
it opens.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
Yeah, yeah, it should be exciting, but that's see what happens. Uh.
Speaking of goalies, just quickly, has there ever been a
better media darling and hockey than Devin Cooley? Him calling
Scott Oak dude was one of the highlights of my life. God,
I love that.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
He's a classic. He's funny.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
I've been showing clips off his post games to like
all my buddies at work, and they're all laughing, like
who is this dude? They're just hilarious and like certain
in dumb goals and I try to keep my head
as empty as possible, like he's just a beauty.
Speaker 1 (39:50):
He doesn't. I don't think he's trying to be funny.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Oh that's just him. I think he's just adhd as
all hell and he just loves being alive.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
All right, before we go, we've had a lot of stress,
a lot of negativity, and God help us the next week.
We're not talking about another Maloney interview or anything. Really,
to be honest with you, I don't want anything. I
just want to talk about hockey. What do you think
(40:21):
have been like three good positives for the team this years?
Speaker 2 (40:26):
Nets Off who is now officially I think Robert Munich
pointins and is now officially in nhl R because he
now requires Wavers to be.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
Demoted games last night.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
Yep, yeah, because nuts Off has been by far one
of my favorite things. I wasn't prepared for this.
Speaker 1 (40:43):
At all, by the way I know, I just I don't.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
Nuts Off's a big one. Honestly. The emergence of Devin
Cooley is a reliable backup. I wasn't expecting that after
the preseason that him and Profstov had so I would
agree happy about that. I think we might have a
tandem for years to come. Yeah, yeah, fingers crossed in that. Jesus,
what's the third one gonna be? That's a tough one. Well, honestly,
(41:09):
it's gridden. It's so so, so, so so rare for
a first year pro to light up the American League
like that, and he is lighting it up big time.
And like people keep saying, and I'm on board with
the two. You want to recall this guy sometime three
quarters of the season, go ahead, but right now, let
him build his confidence on torch that league and we'll
see him when we see him.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you. And I didn't
want him to go down. I was pissed. I was pissed.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
I love man. I'll be geting the ninety two grid
in Jersey for sure.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
But the only one all I add to that is like,
as much as I've been hard on him lately, I
do think that having rastmun Sanderson step up his game
is really helped his trade value. And uh, let's pray that. Uh,
let's just pray that we maximize that as much as
as much as we possibly can.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
So you're just gonna to piggyback on my three, or
do you have anything.
Speaker 1 (42:01):
Else, you know, I like Kevin Ball.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
It's okay. I'm not like making funny. I'm just saying
it's hard to find positive season.
Speaker 1 (42:08):
There's not a lot of them. But I'm gonna I
like I really because that's the thing I thought Hansa,
you know, stepping up and getting recall and fitting in
pretty well. Unfortunately that ended with an injury. But I
loved his game. I loved what I saw, and as
much as he wasn't probably putting up the points that
I wanted, he was showing a lot of a lot
(42:31):
of good skill though, I like to I like this speed,
I like this skill. I like his worker online on
the boards a lot better. So I think that's a
positive too.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
Absolutely it is. Do we care for everything? I think?
So you got a breath pretty well, which is shitty
because I could play hockey here in like an hour.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
What do we got this week? A five game road
trip that started last night in Vancouver. We had two
in Florida, now one in Carolina and it's in Nashville.
This is not gonna be an easy one. It's at
Tampa Bay, then a Black Friday Friday game in Florida,
and then another day game in Carolina. Usually this road
(43:15):
trip here, if you remember last year was a major
chink in the armor last year for this team. This
tough one. This is a real tough one.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
I think their first game back at home is the
game I'm ad against Minnesota. It is, Yeah, so we'll
see what kind of shape therough. And by the time
they get back to the Dome and I get back
to the Dome.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
And Minnesota has been good, Minnesota has been coming on good.
Speaker 2 (43:39):
Yeah, and that they beat up on the Jets last night,
which is a little disheartening. But of course they're without
Hellibuck for the next four to six weeks after with
a companye surgery, so that sucks.
Speaker 1 (43:47):
But a year filled with injuries, it's uht and everybody.
Speaker 2 (43:53):
Yeah, it is big time, big time. So you gotta
wonder what that means for the US Golton situation Olympics too,
because you gotta think dust Wolf's gonna spot on that team. Eh,
with Ottinger and Hellibuck, maybe I forgot I'm forgetting a
prominent American goalie helped.
Speaker 1 (44:09):
Me seeing somebody very prominent.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
John Gibson has been a bit resurging in Detroit.
Speaker 1 (44:15):
Who was on the Four Nations.
Speaker 2 (44:17):
Hella, Buck, that's terrible. You're the American, you tell me.
Speaker 1 (44:22):
Hella Buck Ottinger and I don't know.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
Uh wow, that's terrible.
Speaker 1 (44:30):
I mean I'd be all for Dustin Wolf going if
he was gonna get the play, but I don't want
him to go and miss vacation when he's probably gonna
need it.
Speaker 2 (44:40):
Uh well, team a, yeah, but I mean Cooley is
getting more starts. We need to swap Jeremy sway man.
Of course, Spencer Knight in Chicago has been thatcher Demko
as well, but as we said, he's kind of made
a glass.
Speaker 1 (44:56):
So yeah, they're not. If I was Vancouver, I wouldn't
let him back to play in that.
Speaker 2 (45:04):
No, he needs the recovery time. Man that he should
be a hell of a goal even and he is
when he plays, but man, he's been having some bad
luck anyway. So yeah, daunting week ahead, scary quite frankly
Kyle for Calgary, right, yeah, I leave for Calgary on Monday.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
Okay, next week's show is going to be a little different.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
Well, we can do a regular one on Sunday, couldn't we?
We could my Birthday Eve show we'll call it.
Speaker 1 (45:37):
Yeah, we could, oh.
Speaker 2 (45:38):
Ship your birthdays next week too?
Speaker 1 (45:41):
This week?
Speaker 2 (45:42):
No, this week, Wednesday, Thursday, Wednesday. Oh first, didn't you
have the look? Brad didn't even have the look?
Speaker 1 (45:48):
Good? That's pretty new. Year's was the first too, because
I put it in my calendar this year. Yeah, well,
I will say, yeah, we could work something on. I'm
going to Grand Forks this weekend, and I'm going to
and Forks for two reasons. My daughter plays on a
youth hockey tournament. But I'm also going to watch Calgary
Flames prospects Cole Reshni and Kate Littler play and maybe
(46:11):
Flames number one or two pick Keaton Verhoff play. I'm
doing that Saturday night so I will be able to
report on them. Whether permitting getting back at a decent time,
we can. Let's do that. Let's shoot for a Sunday
night shoo show.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
Sure, see what happens. So in the means, I'm uh,
still lots to talk about. I don't think we'll be
hearing too much in the Flames front office in the
days ahead.
Speaker 1 (46:36):
I don't even free crickets.
Speaker 2 (46:38):
Can you imagine if they double down down Wall, He's
like all three game win streak. We told you so.
Can you imagine they'd have to get the new building
because they don't be burned to the ground.
Speaker 1 (46:49):
Oh many be a'll send out like notice to talk.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
So somebody tweeted that. Now I gotta touch on that
quick too. Somebody tweeted, but you know, too many chefs
in the kitchen. Oh yeah, Maloney, Conroy, Pascal known is.
I don't even want to say again because I want
him in that front office. But it's kind of crazy,
eh it is.
Speaker 1 (47:13):
It's a lot of I don't.
Speaker 2 (47:14):
Know all all those they got hockey minds, and that's
what they came up with, was Don Looney spitting that garbage.
Speaker 1 (47:24):
Well, this week should be calmer, should be calmer.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
Pretty well has to be anyway, stay tuned and find
out we'll be here for the ride.
Speaker 1 (47:33):
We are here for the ride, all right, flame stands.
We're back next week. If you get a chance this
we hop onto NHL dot com and help with hockey
fights cancer. That's something that I know, Kyle and I
both always try to take care of and help out
something that affects every single family out there at some
point poor time, and that's sad. So do what you
(47:54):
can to help out there. Kyle, you have a great well,
we'll talk before we go to count Yes, hopefully my
trip for Grand Fork School is good and I get
to watch some good prospects.
Speaker 2 (48:04):
I'm excited for your scouting reports, hows and the rest
of our listeners.
Speaker 1 (48:08):
I hope they're good, right.
Speaker 2 (48:09):
Oh, they will be. We're gonna be positive brown. Remember,
we're gonna work on.
Speaker 1 (48:12):
That positive positive and we should. We should end every
show of one positive cond We did it. I made
you name off three things and I named off two.
That's good name anyway.
Speaker 3 (48:23):
Let's get it here all right, see you guys.
Speaker 2 (48:36):
Stay humph.
Speaker 1 (48:40):
Umph sum.
Speaker 4 (48:53):
