Speaker 1 (00:25):
Welcome to the Flames Unfiltered, hosted by myself, Brad Rude
and Kyle Lewis hawking Flames hockey every single week. Kyle,
what day is?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
I am?

Speaker 1 (00:36):
It's been a whirlwind of weekends. Here Monday night. Now
we don't recording the night the Flames play. They're actually
playing three season night.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
It's pre season exactly exactly.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
It's not going to change our conversation. I can guarantee it.
I saw the lineup in tonight. It's not changing our conversation. No.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
I think now that we're in the second week of
training camp, this is you know, the conversations are gonna
take placing the ones are gonn im going to the
very end? Right, That's right I feel anyway.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
I agree. I got a question to start the night,
fire away ebugs. Every team has to have their own
e bug this year, and it's part of the payroll,
not the salary cap, but the payroll. H I've never
heard what an e bug gets paid. But that's a
lot of travel and a lot of time. What's the

(01:23):
justified salary for this position?

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Hmm?

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Okay, so let me put it to this way, how
much would they have to pay you if you were
a goalie to do.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
This, to live that dream nothing, you know, That's what
I mean. But it's a hard like, yeah, the old
system was like they got five hundred bucks, right, and
they got to keep the jersey. I still sign up
for that, but you gotta believe it.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
But now you're traveling. Now you can't have a job, like,
what what are you gonna do?

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Let's dount better the job that I have, so.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Cary No.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
I mean, I wouldn't have to carry a phone that
rings on a hundred times a day from you know,
people that just want things. But I mean that's what
they pay me to do, so I shouldn't complain.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
But I know, I think we both face the same
problems in day to day life.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
In terms of our work lives, yes, and rooting for
a you know, mediocre team.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
I think a lot of parts of our lives eerily similar.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yeah, I would argue yours is a bit more stable, perhaps,
but that's a discussion for a different type of podcast,
you know, the one where dudes look to other dudes
for help, not talk about hockey.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
We do that a lot of counseling sessions on our
podcast season. I got something I found something for you
the other day. And I'm not I'm not doing this
to be a smart ass, but I'm in help book. No, no, no, I.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Got lots of those anyway, don't need for work going on.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
So well, I've been I've told you this before and
we said on the pot I collect there and flurry
cards and I've like tried to. I'm trying to get
like as many as I can, just like one of
each of his cards. Right, It'll never happen where I
get them all, but it's it's just a fun. It's
fun to collect. Right.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Sounds agonizing, but yes, go on.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
I know. I was at the card story the other
day and I ran into this card and I laughed
when I saw it, and I put it in my
bin and stuff to buy. Can you read what that is,
Matt Phillips, Yes it is. I didn't have to read
it as No, isn't that crazy card? It's an upper
deck portrait card of your buddy Matthew Phillips.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Wow, get himself game for the duction to night in
the preseason again. I know, I know, Yeah, I think
you had two goals, good one for sure. Anyway. Uh yeah, well,
card collecting is any other type of collecting is an
endless journey. It's like fixing up a house.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
It is, it's probably worse. Probably it's just as expensive nowadays,
I can tell you that, and.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Not nearly as rewarding. Yeah, so how do we we
can a lot of nothing that's going on to start
this one? How do we segue into flame stock by
singing and do it? Apparently? Who? Okay, all right, let's
let's dive into it, because again, week two is where
things get, you know, a lot more refined. So who's

(04:18):
your standout? Thus? Fear and Camp can be a veteran
but also younger players.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Who's my standout?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
If you had to pick just one? And there could
be stuff, but just one that just jumps in your head?
Who's really impressed you so far?

Speaker 1 (04:30):
M you know, here's a sad thing like not not
a lot are impressing me? Right now? I'm serious, I
I'm I have not been very impressed. I was impressed
the Vancouver game. The other games, I thought we looked awful,
flat out awful. All right, Okay, who is impressed me? Now?

(04:53):
Some of the guys I feel like we haven't seen
forward wise Frost has really he's probably the forward that
has stood out the most to me.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
And arguably I mean next to probably share Govic is
as much to prove as any forward.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Right, he stood out the most defensively. I don't even
really know defense.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Well because PreK, like we all knew he was this good, right,
you know, do we want.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
To talk about him right away? I have a lot
of positives to say about Zane PreK. I love a
lot of what he does. I still worry a little
bit when this week now we'll really see it when
we're playing against NHL forwards that somewhat care.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yeah, Elliott Friedman said of thirty two thoughts, it was
like players like veteran players will be fifty to seventy
five percent carrying this week.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, So I'm interested interested to see how he handles
it thus far. I'm super impressed. And as much as
he irritated me slightly at the beginning of camp that
he was going to be automatically on the roster because
of default, I believe he's earned it and I and
I fully say that, I am going to tell you
one thing that drives me absolutely nuts in his game,

(06:12):
and I'm gonna I'm going to snap a few times
on X this year of it, when he hits the
puck and he's skating up and he's moving his feet
the opposite direction and doing all this footwork when there
isn't anybody even close to him, irritates the shit out
of me. What is that? What is that stuff? Like?

(06:34):
What is that?

Speaker 2 (06:36):
An extremely skilled player, you know, using his mobility.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
There's nobody around him.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
I understand that, but he's he is such a such
a unique way of consistently protecting the puck. Then I mean,
if we have to put up with to get the
good things, I mean it.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
May you No, it's this, it looks I don't know,
it's I don't know, man, I'm a.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Little This is old school Brad. Yeah, this is old
school Brad.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
I don't like it. But like I said, there's a
lot of things like it's like the blasty jerseys. To me,
I don't like it, but if you win with them,
I love it.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Sports superstitions are just the fucking worst. And I'm just saying, actually,
I'm curious what the Toronto Blue Jays record was in
their city connect jerseys, because those are beautiful. I should
look that up.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Anyway, you see the Minnesota Wilder wearing the red the
very first who those and they're gonna wear the white
ones at home. Hey, Batman, let's do that for everything.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Yeah, you're a big proponent of that.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
I forgot, yes, because then when you're sitting at the saddle, though,
when you're a season ticket holder, new team's coming in
every night with a new color jersey, not a white
jersey every single night. When you if you're a season
ticket holder now and you go to Flames game, you
got red and against white every single night, all eighty
are all forty one. It used to be that you well, okay,

(08:08):
but you used to go to a game though, and
every night it was a new color coming in. And
by the way, you could put a blast you on
a white jersey to make people happy, right, or were
the black ones once in a while and change the.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yeah, I mean the last time they switched to go
to dark sit when they switched it to go to
darks at home, that's when we got the iconic red
Mile two thousand and four red jersey with the black
sea with blasting the shoulder, which many would argue is
the only really you know, beautiful jersey and team history
not currently being represented So anyway.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Do you think do you think it's funny that when
me and you talk, our conversation goes to eighties hair
metal or jerseys? Damn near every conversation.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Note if we drank together, Oh boy.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
I'll drag it back here and I'll finish the question
that you gave me, and then I'm gonna throw that
same question back at you. I could speak about I actually,
and I want to defensively, A Zane Brackett has stood
out to me, and and I'm I'm gonna throw another

(09:21):
name out there that has stood out to me, and
I'm wondering why he gets very little praiser consideration for
the future on this team, and that's Greshnikov on defense? Well,

(09:42):
I mean physical, Yeah, he's safe out there, he does
his job. Is that not what we want? And a
third pairing left defenseman?

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Well yes, but I mean there's such there's so many
players ahead of him in the depth chart.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Who who on the depth chart is playing better than him?
I'm just saying it surely isn't Mirimana, It surely isn't
Jake Bean. I would argue that I would have Brustavitch
on there and Greshnikov on the roster before I would
be in or Mirramana.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
Well, this is exactly what everybody's talking about. So the
concern is that, like many NHL camps and past Flames
camps especially, that players that deserve to make the opening
roster may not and just took off and be one
of them for sure, because he's.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Not making the roster. I can tell you that right now.
And I don't know that I would even have him
on mine. I'm just saying, like I guess, I'm I'm
frustrated with something and that's his talk, and I don't know.
And I'm not throwing our Flames market in under the
bus here, I think it. I don't know. Maybe it
happens in every market, but why are we so afraid

(11:05):
of waivers in Calgary? Like if we put mer Matoff
on waivers tomorrow, God help me. I hope somebody does
claim him, because then we don't have to pay the
guy at one point two five.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Well, there's been a lot of time about him meeting
a fresh heart anyway, and I don't I you know,
I still think that's a distinct possibility for him.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
No, there's no way, because who's putting him on their
NHL roster. You can't claim him and not put him
on your NHL roster. He's got to play.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
You can always try to bury him.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
You have to have him play though first.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
Yeah, but here, like he's in. He came into camp
and arguably the best shape of his life, I mean,
and there's lots of guys that aren't having great camps.
And if you get and then I'll answer the question
as well. But who's impressed me who hasn't so far
would be him for sure, but also Devin Cooley of course,
and Propstov has actually impressed me a fair bit so far.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
I would agree. I would agree he's definitely winning the
battle right.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Definitely another guy who has not really done anything. I mean,
and again it's preseason's training camp. It's hard to say
too much, but Martin Poscosol has been, you know, virtually invisible.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
He's been.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
I'll tell you a guy who has my answer to
the question, who absolutely to this point should be in
the opening IT roster or Rick Karen's. I don't know
what else this guy has through to make this team.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
I knew this was going to be the talk of
the of the show, and you know what, we're gonna
go back and forth in this one. I'm gonna agree
with a lot of what you say, but I'm going
to disagree at the end on one thing. And and
you know he is. He's been the talk of camp
and he's hard to It's hard to argue against him

(12:47):
being on the roster because he puts up points. Even
last year when we call him up for four games
or five games, I believe he had four points.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
He had four point four game shit Like.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
He just finds a way, right He never he ever
does he ever make a play. You're like, wow, that
was impressive.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
No, what what impresses me is his foot speed and
his ability to make plays in tight spaces.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
You know what else impresses me? He wins face off.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
Yeah, yeah, against Jonathan Taves, who probably a little bit
rust in mind you, and.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
He was against him, I get. I just looked it
up here. That's pretty good for against Jonathan Taz, who
led the league, I believe, three times and face offs.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Yeah. But so here here's the other reason, and I
should mention this is a funny at side. I texted
the scout with the Flames that was largely responsible for
drafting him and said he's reached out to the Flames
for a bonus for you know, for helping find Rory Karens,
and he said, well, hopefully just helps me keep.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
My job solid point.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Yeah. Yeah. But the thing is is this team, you know,
there's been so many questions for quite some time now,
you know, in terms of center depth. And I'm not
going to suggest that Rory Karen's is going to be
the answer that, but he could be a answer to
that based on everything he's done in a very limited
sample sized mind of the ninill level. I just unless

(14:09):
he falls off a cliff towards the end of this preseason,
I don't know how he doesn't make the team based
when he's done so far. He's been fantastic and faceoffs,
you know, he's scored again. His speed is deceiving, the deceptive,
I guess it'd be the best word for it. He's
he's been really, really good and he deserves to be
on this team, and more so than Martin possibleson right now.

(14:31):
And we've also said, both of us, we don't think
Lomberg should be in the line up necessarily every single night.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
So I don't know that, I mean, I don't see
what he brings to the team at all. Right now, the.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
Locker room guy.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Right, God, I'm gonna sound like the biggest prick in
the world tonight. I don't give a shit anymore. I
want to win Stanley Cups. I'm tired of these feel
good stories. I don't care. Yeah, I'm tired of this
in Calgary. He's a good guy. I'm sure he's great.
I'm sure he's great. But you know what, I want

(15:06):
to win Stanley Cups. And I'm sure that the Justin
Kirkland story is wonderful and I'm sure he's great. Is
Justin Kirkland an every day NHL player? No? Is Rory
Karen's an everyday NHL player. I don't think so. I
pray to God I'm wrong.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
I think I think you are wrong in that, But
time will tell.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
I'm pray I'm wrong. But I don't feel like it.
I don't. I don't feel it.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
But when you have guys like you know, and it sounds.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
So contradictory because he's getting the points, it sound awful
saying that.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
And again, it's not just the points, it's everything he's doing.
But to your point, and you know, the overactioning concerning
point is guys like Kirkland Lomberg, you know we mentioned
possible is not playing well, Klapka potentially, who's been a
tweeter to this point, There's there's a glut of forwards
that could conceivably because they have experience or because Lomberg

(15:58):
won a Cup that could take opportunity away from a
guy like Karen's. A guy like Karen's, this could turn
to be another Matty Phillips.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
Right, you never know, but he needs has more upside
than Maddy Phillips. I think it was more dynamic of
his score. But I think and I and I hate,
I hate saying this because there's a lot of guys
that overcome it, but I do believe his size was
it was tough for a detriment, right.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Yeah, well for a player that plays they gave the
game the way that he does for sure, you know
away well, time will tell, But I am concerned, as
I've always been, that this galot of forwards in the
bottom part of the roster will end up taking a
spot from a guy who's really really earned it. There's
exceptions to everyone. Some guys you just can't deny them,
but you know, it's again like every camp, we're not

(16:42):
gonna more and told it in that last round of
cuts since he makes opening night. But yep, I don't know.
I just that that always concerns me. It concerns me
in defense as well. I mean, we know practice essentially
a shoeing and C has praised him when he's talked
about him. Elliot Freeman mentioned him on thirty two Thoughts today,
Like everybody's talking about this guy, but there's a lot
of other stories that you know, we're not as sure

(17:03):
of that could end up playing out being really poort
part of this team.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
I think I need you to talk to me off
the cliff here because maybe I'm getting too deep into this,
but I'm looking at our team. Matthew Coronado to me,
hasn't stood out at all in camp. Connor Zerry hasn't
stood out at all. I can't even remember the last

(17:27):
time I saw Sharon Govic even play. I think he's
in the roster ten eight. I believe, I'm not one
hundred percent sure. I still sit and I look at
it Ara Adam Klapk and go is this guy in
NHL or not? And one of the things, And you
know what, I sit and I look at Martin postwhistles
I and I, God, I can't believe I'm saying this,
but I wonder is he an NHL or not? And

(17:51):
I'm I know, I know, I'm probably getting too deep here,
but I guess what my worry is, offensively, is that
no one is jumping off the board that changes the
makeup and look of this team in a positive direction.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
Uh that's a bit of a yeah. It's kind of
tough at this point to say I do wonder about
possible soil being. I mean, he got a contract, as
always every day inchell player.

Speaker 1 (18:24):
He did, and he's gonna he's gonna get a spot
whether he plays awful or not right now, because.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
Well he's gonna have he's gonna be into the lineup,
potentially in a worse case. But I do think that
he had a bit of a his case really called
a sophomore slump, but something to that effect. I mean,
it's just his second real, you know, first year in
the league.

Speaker 1 (18:44):
But as far as I have my theory, I'm sorry
to interrupt you, Kyle, No, what's your theory? The day
they took the edge away from Martin Postposil, his game declined.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
What day was that when after the time the time
he suspended, you mean, yep, yeah, that's understandable.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
I was Martin Poswisel, and I assume me if I
was Ryan Husker and Craig Conroy, I'll tell Martin hospital
you need to play on the edge every night. If
you get suspended, We're okay with it. You were effective.
I hate I'm not saying go out there and goon somebody.
I'm saying play on the edge. Teams don't like playing

(19:24):
against players who play on the edge. When Martin Paswissel
was talked about every day, he was playing on the
edge his last suspension, when Ryan Husker publicly said that
they talked to him about taking it back a step,
he has not been the same player since.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Yeah. Hm, well, concerning to me, it is. Yeah, he's
one of those guys that they don't have to keep
an eye on terms to see how much he plays
or how effective it is. I certainly expect he'll score
more than four goals or I hope so. But I
think this team is a lot of for depth. I'm
not that concerned about it. I'm a little concerned that

(20:04):
you got the contract to get where he's still a
bit of an unknown, but we shall see how that
plays out.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
That contract doesn't scare me like I mean it does,
because I'm sitting here saying I'm worried about where he
sits in the lineup, But it is a contract that's.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
It's pretty negligible in the grand scheme. But it's like,
you know, the whole the team kind of assumed, Okay,
this guy's gonna play all the time being effective player
for us, and he still certainly could be sure. But
that's also why he didn't get a big commitment. It
was more of a bridge deal, right to see what
they actually have in him, so much like they with
convers we shall see. But at any end to the day,
like the something's got to give this season, there's a

(20:39):
huge glot of forwards in this team. One or two
they're gonna have to be sent to the Wranglers or
waved or traded or something because there's just too many
guys floating around.

Speaker 1 (20:48):
Is there too many? How do I word this? Because
I'm sounding super negative in this show, and I'm not
trying to be because I'm super excited about this season,
But does his team have too many good players and
not enough great players. Is that a problem? I mean,

(21:10):
I believe that's a problem.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
It is now by committee, they can be a pretty
effective group as long as they can score enough, because
I think they have a budding potential perennial All Star
in Perrek and All World goaltender and Wolf. Are they
missing that dynamic forward? Sure, although I do think Matthew
Cornado is gonna be where the league's best goal scorers
for the next probably five to ten years. Honestly, his

(21:34):
shot is so good. I believe that.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
I Oh, I pray you're right, and I don't doubt
that he won't be.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
Because everybody's talking about thirty goals, which I think, if
he's healthy, I think is a given. I think this
guy's gonna score forty. I really think he's that good.
But you know, a bonafide superstar forward is what this
team is missing, and if they have it, it's probably
a ways off. So it's gonna have to be largely
a committee. But do you answer your question, yes, I
do think this team has a lot of good forwards,

(22:03):
as you know enough that there's a few good forwards
who aren't gonna play every night. But do they have
a lot of high end talent. Absolutely not, and they're
gonna have to hope on as we keep talking about
Sharon Govicie abounding, Frost having a big year, Zari taking
a step, Kaudre not aging out, Huberto not aging out.
Those things all need to happen for this team to
score off goals, to make the playoffs and be competitive
in the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (22:24):
What does Griddin do for you at this camp?

Speaker 2 (22:29):
I think he established himself as a legitimate professional prospect.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
Yeah, I agree completely. Is he a roster guy this year? No,
I don't think so, but boy, oh a year from now,
I can't wait to see what he is. Oh.

Speaker 2 (22:43):
He turned a hell of a lot of heads and
understandably so, and will likely continue to do so. I
mean hopefully, you know, in this game against Seattle and
whatever he does, they're a inter camp. But yeah, he
established himself as a legit prospect and went from at
least in my mind, you know, a top ten prospect
of the team to probably top three. He really is
that good. He was dominanting the Q playoffs last year too.

(23:03):
I mean, this guy is there's a future there and
and it's you know, it's not just an everyday NHL ror.
I think there's something beyond that if he continues the
scurge jectory.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
So you mentioned the name Nazim Kadrian last year, I
was kind of a proponent of not even kind of.
I was a proponent of moving him at the draft
when when I feel like his his value was at
an all time high. Uh bruising X this week. That

(23:35):
brings us to our X factor and I and I
see this and it says it's from Tsaris Elapski, not
the explain who I believe. Sadly it is no longer
with us. Correct Anyways, this says I like kadriy a lot.
I'll probably wear his jersey long after he's done playing.

(23:56):
But man, he's a near perfect fit for floor.

Speaker 2 (24:01):
Was this Yeah? Was this prior to the Barkoff news
or after?

Speaker 1 (24:05):
This is right after the Barkoff news? And injuries do
create openings for every franchise when they have them. Unfortunately,
and Alexander Barkoff goes out with the season ending injury,
which really sucks because he's one of my top ten
favorite players to watch, but it does bring to light

(24:28):
I mean Florida's in I mean, they're obviously in win
now mode. They have been winning now, but that continues
now and they're in need of a slot filler. And
I fully believe and wholeheartedly believe that it probably can
do it from within. And he just fine sliding a

(24:51):
Nasen Kadri in there where Barkoff? Was that sound pretty enticing?
Is this something that if you were Craig Conray, would
you expelo.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
Not right now? No, because there's no need to. I mean,
at the end of the day, Barkoff's not gonna be
back told best case the playoffs, best case, Yes, yeah,
Anton Londell is gonna get a lot of heavy minutes.
And it has been described by Freedman and others as
like Barkov light. I just I don't think Florida can

(25:25):
put a package together right now that's enticing enough to
make Conroy, you know, blow his chance in making the
playoffs by keeping Kaudrey. But I think once we get
closer to the deadline that it becomes a hell of
a lot more enticing.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
Ten games into the season, we have six points. Do
you change your mind? Oh?

Speaker 2 (25:46):
Yeah, I would absolutely. Yeah. This team can't afford a
bad start.

Speaker 1 (25:50):
We can't, Like I have thought about it, so many times.
Remember last year when we got off to that just.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
Blazing start five oh one, I believe, I believe.

Speaker 1 (25:58):
Yeah. I remember us talking and we were both like,
can you believe this is actually happy?

Speaker 2 (26:03):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (26:03):
Game out of nowhere to But you know that what
that did was that that those five games or six
games out of the shoot set us up for the
whole year to put us in the race, right m yep.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
There's only that slump in January that really kicked them
in the nuts.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
But yeah, in the Saint Louis saying trip that we'll
never forget that, I'll never never forget that.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
I think the reason we still talk about that it
fixated so much in those two games that because it's
so unusual to have back to back games in the
same burn against the same team. I really think that's
what that's why we got stuck on that. I remember
being it was midweek, it was like a Tuesday Thursday,
and I was so pissed that entire week watched those games.

Speaker 1 (26:41):
Anyway, I remember our show right after that. We were hot. Yeah, yea,
we were, we were smoking, we were mad.

Speaker 2 (26:49):
But anyway, that that's a great X factor, And and
I do think you know if I'm floored, especially missing
Kachuk as well, Let's not forget that. Also, let's not
forget what it could mean to have Bennett, Chuck and
Cadrey in the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (27:02):
Could you imagine? And you know what another thing too
is Like when I read that, the first thing that
came in my mind was, oh, man, Florida's aggressive like
Vegas is they would do that.

Speaker 2 (27:16):
Sorry, just chucking some bios do here. I'm so sick
of Vegas of Florida both. I just I'm tired of
these Sun Belt teams just cleaning up.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
They're aggressive, right, I want us to be that way.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
He said, like Vince mc mann in like two thousand
and three of the ruthless Aggression era. You know, oh,
I get it, But but they're in the position to
be aggressive because they have all these fantastic players that
they drafted, and then they went out and acquired the
right veterans for the right teams of the decline, the
guys like Seth Jones to round up the rosters and
win cups. So now I don't really honestly, it's it's

(27:52):
this is gonna sound terrible, but after watching Mitch Marner's
you know hissy fit in Game seven against Florida. I
don't only think Mitch Marner makes Vegas any more of
a playoff much better.

Speaker 1 (28:02):
It might, It might hurt them in the playoffs, and I.

Speaker 2 (28:05):
Might eat these words because getting out of the Toronto
spotlight might be the best thing to happen to him.
But I'm not worried about Vegas the playoffs right now.
Un totally. He proves different. I whatever too, especially when
you get know Petrolangelo's out, and definitely Stone's always hurt.
Like there's always that gradual change which makes teams like
ours so exciting because we're on the rise, so to speak. Right, Yeah,

(28:27):
the La Kings, you could say the same. The Oilers
are kind of trending a no man's line right now.
There's certainly not any better. I don't think.

Speaker 1 (28:34):
I don't think they're any better. I don't think they're
any worse.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
You know who I do think is worse? Nus?

Speaker 1 (28:41):
You think Vancouver is worse? Huh?

Speaker 2 (28:43):
Absolutely? Now they got the Quinn Hughes distraction, they get
rid of JT. Miller and bringing Evander Kine. And you're
worried about locker room chemistry, Yeah, that doesn't that.

Speaker 1 (28:53):
I think qu The day that trade went down, I
think Quinn he was looked at his phone and is like,
I gotta call Jack.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
Yeah, yeah, So I don't. We'll see how that all
plays open. I mean, they're you know, Elias Peterson was
such a ghost last year, and unless he had some
kind of brutal, nagging injury, the way that he played
despite his talent level, regardless what was going on with
Miller anybody else in Vancouver, you don't win with guys
like that. And I mean, I could be wrong. They
could be a you know, a team to Thatcher Demco

(29:21):
could all of a sudden become a VESNA candidate and
be healthy all year. Anything's possible, But I'm just I'm
not sold on that team at all at all.

Speaker 1 (29:32):
Next week we're gonna do our predictions and we'll definitely
dive him deeper into this. So I'm excited. I'm excited
for that doc. I do have a question though, the
goalie battle between Coolia and prove that stuff. I believe
I said that right has been cool. Let's let's put
it in cool Cooley has struggled a bit and definitely
think that he's got the lower hand, right now Wolf

(29:54):
is going tonight with say in Seattle, which leaves two
preseason games left. I believe Wednesday and Friday. Do you
give each of them one more goal?

Speaker 2 (30:03):
Absolutely has nothing to prove. I wouldn't say, is just
out of college nowhere near pro hockey ready earmarked for
the Wranglers who I think well, I think so too, Yeah,
but full, full game each, none of this one period crap,
like just you know it's a one game audition, guys,

(30:23):
because Cooley has the pedigree and had Lada not been around,
you know, the job would have been his, especially based
on how he played the first half of the season.
How do you say that, I said, Provstaf would you
say it doesn't matter anyway? I have to check that again.
I feel badly.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
I don't think I'm right if he makes this roster,
I promise you're.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
Gonna have to. But he's a big, big man and
has covered the net really really well. He's moved well loutterly.
He's looked like he belongs to the NHL. Again, it's preseason,
but yeah, it's a one game edition for each and
whoever plays the best of those two games. Based on
the rosters, they're likely to face because we're getting near
the end of camp. That's what makes the decision. And

(31:09):
you know, I don't see any danger of either one
being claimed. There's not a you know, a desperate need
of there for goaltenders at the NHL level right now,
So I think that, yeah, you can usually swap them
for the time being if you needed to. But yeah,
i'd let it. I'd let it go down to those
two games then pick from there.

Speaker 1 (31:24):
Yeah, I believe it's Prospetov.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
Right, try that shakers really loud. Yeah, I think that's
what I said.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
Okay, I gotta I got a bone to pick here.
This is some of the post game show on Friday
night after the Winnipeg Jets loss. The Flames lost to
the Jets. I should be more clear, Mac and Michelson
just I don't know. She drove me nut Sonny. She
always makes excuses for players. We had nobody jump off

(31:52):
the page at all that night, right, Yeah, except for
Karen Karen's kind of did.

Speaker 2 (31:57):
Karen karen'sad has not had a bad hand and so.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
But she she always finds excuses and she says, well,
Devin Cool, it really wasn't fair to him because he
was up against a good Jets roster tonight, and I thought,
I don't know, like Game six, when he plays, is
he not going to be against an NHL roster, Like, like,
I don't understand.

Speaker 2 (32:20):
This, Like, well, I think she's trying to highlight the
fact that the team around him wasn't that great. But
I don't think it's an excuse for necessarily how you played. Now,
if you look at each of those goals, none of
them were like egregiously bad one one, but well, but
I mean, the hope is that your NHL goaltender will
make one of those saves for you to keep you
in the game, right, And that wasn't the case.

Speaker 1 (32:40):
No, he didn't. I didn't think he looked great, But
I mean, I don't know I was hoping that. I
guess I didn't really know who I wanted to win
the battle. I guess I don't have a preference. I
just want And I think we need a backup goalie
that we can feel very comfortable with because we cannot
put all the pressure on Wolf and it'd be one

(33:00):
hundred percent on Dustin Wolf. I don't I don't. I
don't think that's fair. I don't think it's fair to
do to any goalie.

Speaker 2 (33:04):
You know, it's funniest. As we're talking about this, there's
one day left of the month, and the guy in
the Flames calendar for september's Dan Vladire.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
I like Dan Vlada, I miss Dan Vladare.

Speaker 2 (33:15):
I'm curious to see how he does in Philly. I
really am.

Speaker 1 (33:17):
He's gonna be good. He's gonna be good.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
Do you think Carter Hartland somewhere. I've heard lots to
talk about that.

Speaker 1 (33:23):
I've heard Vegas. I think elam somewhere. Why not?

Speaker 2 (33:27):
God, just enough of this Vegas shit.

Speaker 1 (33:29):
It's gonna be Vegas.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
It just it just is heart and Hill.

Speaker 1 (33:36):
I got another question for you, since I kind of
jammed up on this waiver thing. We have a fairly
long list of guys that are eligible, that are waiver eligible.
Are you losing any sleep? Okay, tell me. I'm gonna
list the guys off, and as I say him, tell me,
are you upset if we lost them on waivers or not.

Speaker 2 (33:58):
Carry away?

Speaker 1 (34:00):
I'm gonna skip the first one because it's prospotaph and
because I believe he's gonna win the race. So are
you gonna be upset if we lose Devin Cooley, No
me either, Jake Bean.

Speaker 2 (34:15):
I wanted them to get him long before they did.
I want him to be a lot better than when
he's been. But no, Miramahanov, he used to play for Monkdin.
That's not that's almost not even fair.

Speaker 1 (34:28):
Again.

Speaker 2 (34:28):
I want him to work out so badly, But no,
who's nets Off? Yes, I would be upset. He's actually
had a pretty good camp, and I think he's deserved
a longer look with the big club Solovia, same as
because nets Off. I like both those guys.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
I'm agreeing with you so far. Okay, I'm betta skipped
Poria because he already got.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
Clear, already cleared and that. And you know what, I
kind of wish he'd been claimed actually because he deserves
a chance elsewhere. He's married in that the shirt, and
he deserves a look somewhere else.

Speaker 1 (35:03):
Okay, I agree, But has he done anything to show
I mean he is given a chance, I mean, did
he do anything at all?

Speaker 2 (35:11):
No?

Speaker 1 (35:12):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (35:12):
Well, but let's look at it this way, just for
a moment. So you got the established initial guys, the leaguers,
Anderson's you know, et cetera, et cetera, and these blue
chip prospects like Perstavige PreK like.

Speaker 1 (35:24):
He got jumped over.

Speaker 2 (35:25):
Yes, it's it's really really hard to ju for the
Flames to justify giving him a longer look or more attention.
He just it's just a a you know, it's just
and I heard at one point that Pristavitch, you know,
wasn't like thrilled that. You know, the Flames are draft
are prec because they have a lot of similarities in
their skill set, right, And whether or not that's true,

(35:46):
it doesn't matter. The point is that the depth chart,
when it's as deep as the Flames, that you get
all your NH already. Guys, this is why we talk
about the last show. But can be kind of excited
about moving Anderson. There's a bit of a glove of
demon and Jeremy Pory has just been totally lost in
the shuffle by no fault of his own. See.

Speaker 1 (36:01):
I think that in defensively we do have a deep
prospect pool. Offensively, I think our prospect pool sucks.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
It got a lot better after this last draft, I think,
but we'll see.

Speaker 1 (36:13):
I would agree, but that's still four years out. But
I think it sucks. You're there, Yeah, Adam kay Klapka.

Speaker 2 (36:23):
Uh yeah. I don't want to lose him just because
he's so big, you know, he's such a big dude,
justin No, I'd missed his I missed his shootout move,
but no, I mean I this guy is is a
career hler which is still pro hockey, way better than
I've ever played, of course, yeah, but he's not. And

(36:44):
the thing is too, like I remember Michael Stone when
he ruined his knee, like you do lose a step
with that tom of injury, especially hockey.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
He looks a little slower. I know people are saying
he doesn't, but he does.

Speaker 2 (36:54):
He looks a little slawter whether he is or he isn't,
just with the age, the miles, and I'd love to
keep him, but I mean yeah, and that shootout move
like I want to try that like that it's it's
you know, it's like a cheap code. However, am I
gonna be upset if we lose him? No, because he's
one of those guys that's kind of, you know, placeholding
for somebody who deserves a chance now like a Rory

(37:16):
Karen's right, Sam Morton, I don't want to lose him.
I feel like there's might there might be something there.
Rory Karns, I'd be furious, furious. You don't even want
to know the hell I'd raised if that were to happen. Clark, Bishop, No, Curricheller, Regulars,

(37:36):
Captain isn't he?

Speaker 1 (37:38):
I thought the next guy I was gonna say, Dryden Hunt.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
Is Oh yeah, I I Bishop and Hunt No. I mean, listen,
I want to be careful because these guys are very
important to the development of your I.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
And I'm not I know I've been gro I'm just speaking.
That's why it's called flames unfilter. I'm speaking about what
I feel about the guys right now. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Well, and it's like when I talk to my buddy
that works of the Blue Jackets, it's like, you know,
there's only so many of these jobs, whether it's scouting, coaching, playing, whatever,
and that's those guys when they move on, like, they're very,
very valuable, but there's a they're kind of a diamond
dozen in a sense. You can find other hl you know,

(38:22):
veterans that round out your roster and teach younger guys
how to play pro like I.

Speaker 1 (38:26):
Mean, like, for example, I was pretty fired up when
you lost Cole Schwint. I don't think.

Speaker 2 (38:33):
So.

Speaker 1 (38:34):
Just hear me on. I don't think anybody else in
the Flames fan base kid gives it a ship right
now at all about Cole Schwint and him not being underteam.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
No note at all. Now, he was a right shooting
center who got to get into some games in Vegas.
It was considered a throwing in the massive Florida Calgary trade.
But do I think you get a fair look in Calgary? No,
not at all.

Speaker 1 (38:54):
Yeah I would. That's that's why I'm frustrated walker Doer.
I think he got a fair look in. But nobody's
crying that we lost walker Doer.

Speaker 2 (39:03):
Now, yeah, walker Doer reminded me a lot of Gardner Hathaway.
But here again that type of player. Your energy guys
are not really that difficulty replace.

Speaker 1 (39:15):
No, And I think that's why longbird Lomberg frustrates me
so much, is that this is a this is a
placeholder on our lineup.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
I don't know what we talked about when he fought
Ross Johnston. Remember that when Rob Johnston was with the
Islanders and Blomberg's first go around with the Flames, he
got absolutely dummy Johnson's a monster from Prince Rvard Island,
which was like a fifty minute drive from here, and
Johnston just ragged all him. He's like six foot eight,
like it was. It was hard to watch. I just

(39:48):
flashed back to that.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
And the thing is he's not getting any younger, and
the guys that he fights are getting younger, and there
could be a couple of ugly ones this year.

Speaker 2 (39:58):
Yeah maybe, But you know, I love having him around
the team. It's like we've said along though, I just
I don't want to see him play him every single night,
because I just I don't feel that's his role, especially
when you have guys that are you know, and we
need to start thinking we had because Kadre's getting up there,
Huberrow was. You know, there's a lot more wingers behind
him that you know, have stuff to prove back when
you know most certainly is not getting younger.

Speaker 1 (40:20):
I'm not quite to the stage where I want to say, hey,
a fourth line doesn't need to look like a fourth line.
We can put young guys in en roll with it.
But I'm kind of leaning Gosh for an old fashioned
guy here, I can't believe I'm even thinking this. I'm
kind of starting to lean that, like, well, the fourth
line now is not doing anything, although I know last

(40:41):
year at the beginning of the year, our fourth line
was pretty effective and it lost effectiveness as the season
went on. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (40:51):
They were really good in the last part of the season,
the last few games, like they were they have. That
was actually the best hockey I'd ever seen Kevin Rny play.
And actually he's on a PTO in Jersey where he played.
I hope that goes well for him. He had a
really nice finish of the season.

Speaker 1 (41:06):
He did the last ten games. Yeah, he was. He
was very, very good. I don't know. We got a
lot that will happen this week with three games Seattle
tonight as we're recording on a Monday evening for a
Tuesday release, and then Wednesday the Flames are at home
against Vancouver and then at home Friday again against Winnipeg,

(41:29):
and those will really kind of ramp up as we go,
I would think, and even get more and more NHL
based and more cut salon the way. I believe we'd
probably see some more cuts in Calgary tomorrow, wouldn't you agree? Oh?

Speaker 2 (41:45):
Yeah, most certainly, most certainly. I'm actually looking at tonight's
lineup because it is Uncle Kurt saying Bahal on top
bearing where he belongs. That's awesome.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
I think, Yeah, I like Cooker, I like.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
To He's a great following, a great guy.

Speaker 1 (42:06):
I think that. I love where brain Pahol is. That
third line's perfect and he or that third Pairian is perfect,
and he does a hell of a good job there.
And I saw a talk this week on on Exit
they wanted you know, him not in the lineup, and
I'm just like, oh boy, you guys like this guy
brings the big, tough, strong defender that we need. We

(42:30):
need him, especially when we're gonna have defenders like Perek
and Bristavich in the in the lineup where we're gonna
need guys like Pahol and Hanley and uh absolutely and Ball.
We're gonna need guys like that, right, I mean, you
got to have a good strong mix. And uh, finally,
I think we've found our our offensive, dynamic defenseman, and
we need to have defensive minded guys surrounding and sheltering

(42:52):
him a little.

Speaker 2 (42:52):
Bit, right, Absolutely excuse me, So this Chris be kind
of crazy too. Speaking of defenseman, I didn't realize Mckenziweeger
finished with thirty nine assists last year, the same as
Huberto had twenty nine goals, the same as dust Wolf
had twenty nine wins. This lack of round numbers. Man
can't handle it. You know how I feel about that? Oh,

(43:13):
it drives me nuts. Anyway, it doesn't matter, doesn't matter.
But yes, to your point, We're gonna see a lot
of changes in the next few days. Yeah, we're gonna
have to be way more active. It's gonna be way
more stuff to react to, right.

Speaker 1 (43:27):
Yeah, Yeah, be a lot a couple of things before
we jump on out here and let people get on
with their afternoon, day, morning, evening, whatever time that they're
tuning in, which thank you for tuning in. Kyle and
I love doing this show. We look forward to hopping
on the mic every week and talking about the team
we love, whether it's good or bad that week. I
know this week I look a little bit more dismal

(43:48):
than Kyle does, and maybe next week that'll change. But
we are back next week, and next week is gonna
be a kind of a fun episode. We're gonna talk
about player projections, whether we think they're gonna have an
up or down year, we'll talk about the team and
how the Cecivic Division we'll we'll shake out this year
and kind of dive into some more talk of in
the Pacific Division, about our opponents that we see much

(44:09):
more frequently than the other opponents. Until then, watch the
preseason games. Of course, get on to Flames unfilter dot com.
Sign up for the contest. Were given away a gift
card to this Calgary Flames team store, and you can
also use it for beer at the saddle Doome too,
if you didn't know that.

Speaker 2 (44:29):
Which you're yes, actually I think they signed a deal
with Moulson they did.

Speaker 1 (44:34):
I just saw that beer this year. I like that.
I like Molson.

Speaker 2 (44:38):
Yeah, it takes it back to like years ago when
the Flames were involved with Wilson. Yeah, yeah, I much
prefer that over what they had.

Speaker 1 (44:45):
But anyway, also get on over to the website Flames
Unfiltered dot com. You'll see it like when it says
speak pipe. Get on there. Record a message for us,
we'll put it on the show. We'll answer your question,
discuss whatever you have on your mind. So we look
forward to getting a few of those in the coming weeks. Anyways,
we're back next week, Kyle, did you survive another week?

Speaker 2 (45:08):
I did this and this is the last time I'll
have to play hockey before we record. So I've got
a couple of weeks off the ice, just some pliminary ices,
raised times and back to normal here on out. And
I got some Flame teams coming up. I got Flames
and Senators in Ottawa the end of October, I got
the Flames in Montreal, the gonna get in January, and

(45:30):
I'm actually in CALGreen Simmers. I'll catch the game then too.
So all of the season chock full of games.

Speaker 1 (45:36):
It's gonna be fun. It's there's a lot of unanswered
questions and this roster is gonna be really interesting to
see how it goes this week, and we will definitely
talk about it next week when you join us on
Flames Unfiltered. I have a good week Flame Stands.

Speaker 2 (45:49):
And maybe hopkinson joining us in training camp and looking
forward to our next chat.
