Speaker 1 (00:23):
Hey, Flights fans, it is time for another episode of
Flames Unfiltered, hosted by myself, Brad Rude and Kyle Lewis,
a regular episode. Kyle, we're talking Flames, talking nights and
kind of the summer update, like where are we at,
what are our expectations for the season and all that's as.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
It seems like it's been so long since there's been
any kind of news. Have you Have you ever seen
off season like this.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Well, and you know, people Calgary are freaking out, but
you know what else, it's the whole league, Like I
can't recall, I can't recall. It's an off season where
the whole league has been so quiet.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
It's dead.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
It's weird.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, yeah, it's dead. There's there was two transactions recently
and it's funny because they both kind of relate to
the Flames a bit. Two very very minor transactions, the
only transactions of any kind in weeks at least. Travis Hamminick,
former Flames defenseman who he once traded a you know,
a boatload of picks to get signing. Yeah, he signed

(01:30):
to deal with Detroit Red Wings kind of a I mean,
obviously it's some they consider it some depth. But it's
an interesting move, I guess because you know, Hamminick's ice
time and performance in the recent years has certainly declined,
as any players would. And the other one was Milan
Lucis getting a PTO with the Saint Louis Blues.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
That's it, sign him, big bunny, I wouldn't.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yeah, right, I wonder what kind of shape he's in.
I mean, he hasn't played in a while. I suspect
he's been on the you know, working on this for I.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Mean, okay, I wasn't there, Like, I don't know, but
based off his speed the last year he was in Calgary, yeah,
lack thereof you mean to say, yeah, like, I'm pretty
sure he's not gonna make the roster. If he makes
the roster, I then I'm lost.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Well, like I say, if he's in tremendous shape, there's
a chance he could. But there's always that whole prerogative
of like, you know, trying to push your younger players
are bringing in some veteran depth into camp. Now, that said,
what typically will happen when moves like this starts to
take place late into the summer, which, sadly that's where
we are usually means well, yeah, sadly, but it means
hockey is close, so that's great. But this is when

(02:42):
the domino start to fall. People get PTOs, there's league
minimum deals, you know, you just start to see all
that stuff start to happen. So I think even in
the next week we'll see another one or two guys
get PTOs or somebody a small contract.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Well, really, September one, I don't think we'll see any
PTOs in. I don't, and I kind of hope we don't. Really,
you know what, I don't really mean any right, No,
we're not set up for that. We're not.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yeah, yeah, I don't. I don't foresee anything like that happening.
But you never know. There's always a body like an
Amy forget, somebody comes back from overseas or something like that,
so they might add somebody just to hap them in camp,
and hey, maybe they end up getting signed as a
veteran to go play with the Wranglers. That happens a
lot too, right.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Is it crazy that the biggest news kind of in
Calgary this week was the new logo at Center Ice.
What was it? The big news?

Speaker 2 (03:34):
It's pretty cool?

Speaker 1 (03:36):
You like it or I see I couldn't wait to
hear what you me and you go back and forth
on like what's cool and what's not, And like I
saw the picture and like my initial response was oh cool,
And now I looked at the old one and I'm like, yeah,
I like the old one.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
I like the new one. But as a center ice logo,
it's it's a little bold. Yeah, it draws the eye
a lot if I but I won't really know until
I see it on TV or when I see it
when I'm at the dome, so I know. But it
kind of makes me think a bit of like the
boards where they have the advertising on the boards and
becomes a bit of a distraction.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Yeah, we'll see.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah, that's all we can do, right.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
You know what I don't like about it?

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Though?

Speaker 1 (04:15):
You know what I really don't like, And this is
the OCD coming out on me, So make fun of me.
I look at the picture again. It looks like or
it says, saddle dome. It looks like it like bleeds out.
It's not bent enough, like whoever put it in the
ice jacked it up, Like it doesn't rope around on
the one side, the top bends around perfectly. In the

(04:37):
bottom part fades off. It looks like garbage.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
So your kids, your wife, your kids, your wife? Know
do they take like a piece of paper towel though,
and not tear it evenly? Does that ever happened to you?

Speaker 1 (04:49):
They do it all the time to me, the dude
to piss me off.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
I can't hititle that either, to be fair, I really can't.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
I'm yeah, I think me and you are a lot
alike in that aspect. I'm really it's not healthy. Let's
put it that way. It's not healthy. Like I cannot
with a dirty dish in the sink. I can't. Can't
do it. I will not sleep.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
I can do that. But like my buddy actually watching
a ball game in my basement, I've got kind of
a man cave set up, and I got up. We're
gonna go get a beer or something. And I got
up and I didn't, like pick down the recliner part
of my chair. I left him up. How can you
leave it like that? Like you gotta kick that thing shut.
I'm like, well, I'm coming Oh, I was gonna be.

(05:29):
We're gonna go like a Barsonth's like you're coming back,
but he's like yeah, but you don't know when kick
that thing shut, like you really bothered him. It was
pretty funny.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
He's probably like me. I I it bothers me that
I'm that way, But like, I have to have my
like I can't like I have a like I have
a beer slash pop bridge in the garage, Like I
have to have him all lined up. Yeah, no, I'm not.
I'm not a logo person like that. I just have
to have the same kind in a roll. They can't

(05:57):
just be put in there. They have to be in
a row.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah I can. I can get. That's like my protein
shakes and my my apstairs fridge. I try to do
the same thing. The coffee flavored ones, the vanilla, the
chocolate peanut butter, which I don't know why, but not
many fucking places carry that flavor. But anyway, I like
chocolate peanut butter. Everybody likes chocolate peanut butter.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Anyway, do you like number twenty three on Justin Kirkland.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
You know what?

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Or was your response the same as me, don't.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Come Oh, okay, okay, Like I don't really care, but
I updated on NHL twenty five my Xbox then just
played a game just because I was bored. And it
looks really weird. I can't. It's seeing a twenty three
in flames. And the funny thing is like Monahan was.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Really Monaghan, but not good.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Yeah well yeah, although I don't think Monahan was ever
that good in the shootout, but you gotta go, like
when you think about it, because like I had one
of Eric Eistrom's Game War in twenty threes, I like, like.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
I got a Game War. I got a game US
stick of his. Maybe we should yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, I sold it for some dumb reasons anyway, but
he was Yeah, there you go, he was. I think
he was the last player prior to mone hand that work. Maybe.
But anyway, it does seem weird to see somebody on
Monahan wearing twenty three. It's really really weird. But that'll
change over time.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
I think we'll probably get used to it. I mean
we've gotten used to weirder numbers, right yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
The thing that kind of so here's kind of a
weird one. Like the weirdest example this ever was in
Corbyn Knight worn number ten. Right oh yeah, but Kirkland
goes from fifty eight, which is like the most training
camp number you can possibly have, to twenty three, which
is one of the more okay, your regular roster player
type numbers you can have. But he didn't play a
ten this season because he's torn ACL So.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
That's the question I have for you, like, are we
gonna have to get used to seeing the twenty three
or are we just not gonna have to get used
to seeing the twenty three? Well?

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Who also take his place? Right? Oh?

Speaker 1 (07:58):
I don't know, Martin Postmocil doesn't center the fourth line.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, I'm not sure, but centering yet And that's I
guess that's an next I'm gonna to his contract. But
Kirkland's gonna be a regular on the roster. I don't
know how much he's gonna play.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
But yeah, I think he's gonna be the extra guy
that fills in for Lomberg when he doesn't play every
game this year.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
You really think he's not gonna play every game this year?

Speaker 1 (08:23):
I think he's gonna, and I don't think he should,
but I think he's gonna. I think it will be
a Huska cojingaire.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
So Kirkland will will sub in when somebody else has
heard or klap Go scratched or whatever.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Right, yep, yep, yep, that's what I think will happen.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
Yeah. Oh, to be honest with you, Yeah, like I
don't know, like, but.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
They're not signing post Soil and we can go fast
forward to that right now. They're not re signing Postpacil
to a three year, two point five million dollar deal.
And I mean, we can't be delusional and think this
guy is a top six anymore. He's a bottom six
and I'm okay with that. And that's a bottom six salary,
and I'm okay with the salary, and I'm okay with

(09:02):
signing the guy because I do think he does bring
something to this team. It's really positive and so I
think he's an integral part of the future. But you
know what I said, and I still stare at that Lomberg.
I have possible Soil center in Lomberg and Klapka, and
I think, holy hell, is that a fourth line?

Speaker 2 (09:23):
It m It's gonna be interesting to see how it
plays it because Klapka was really impressive at times, but
he's not a guy. And the last time.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
We had him in the right wing of the first line.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Like it's like the last game of the year. But
they could addressed you right for that game nobody cares.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
I know, I know, I know, I just I don't know.
Maybe I get worked up with that stuff much.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Well, Klapka has you know you I'm thinking of an
old wrestling thing. You know, he's six foot eight. You
can't teach that.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
So you're right, You're totally right.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
And yeah, so it's like his board play in Paspasle's
North South game, like this shuld work well together, I
think the Lomberg is.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
And I yeah, and I'm playing with Lomberg playing forty
some games and let's billion other people there. Yeah, And
I'm not against Lomberg, and I know this fan base
loves him and and I'm not saying that I don't
like what he brings to the table and especially brings
to the locker room. But like, I think we had
a lot of guys last year. And you correct me
if you think I'm out to lunch, because today I'm

(10:28):
super opinionated about stuff. Not just at I'm just I'm
having one of those days. I'm in a good mood,
but I'm just like super opinionated, which is probably a
bad thing some days. But I just I think last
year we miscast a lot of players, like just like
put it put him in peg holes that just this
guy's not that guy, like we can dream that he is,

(10:49):
but he's not.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
Yeah, well that was the case of Kevin Runey, right,
he's not. He was He's never He played quite well
in the last quarter of the season over all, but
but but he he was never. He never earned being
a regular in the lineup the way that they had
him playing. So no, that's it's gonna be interesting to
be a little bit you know movement. I think in
the next few weeks as we get closing on training campus,

(11:13):
see who's gonna kind of likely wind up where. But
you know, that's funny, Like, as we said at the outset,
we've we've talked, we've had so little talk about this summer,
and I think it's affecting all of us because I've
never had us do a show where we've talked over
each other so much.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
I know we're bad tonight.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
We're just not as syn because we've had nothing to
talk about all freaking summer.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
Rut each other off because we're just like, oh, we
haven't talked about recent news lately.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Well, there's been so little news, there's no flow. So
even you mentioned Kirkland's number twenty three. I'm like that
just happened, Like, oh shit, yeah, that's right. Like there's
like usually you're in a rhythm of sorts, right, and
this summer there's been nothing in every other personality in
hockey on you know, the socials. Is that the same thing,
Like there's just nothing going on?

Speaker 1 (11:56):
So without we just talked over each other again, see
that we said so at the exact same time. What
did you think of the possible hospital contract? And were
you surprised? Like me because I'm like why now? Like
what what? Why?

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Now? I? Well, to me, I think it's an easy
contract to get done, which is why it was done
now because we know he's important. We know he only
scored what four goals last year?

Speaker 1 (12:23):
I have that number he had in four goals?

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Yes, yeah, and which is pretty good. And next year
he's going to score ten to fifteen goals. I'm certain
of it. There's no doubt in my mind.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
He played eighty one games last year too.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah, it's impresive special if a guy had such a
you know, sketchy history with concussions. Now it's just it's
just a safe contract. It's good money for the player.
At this age, at this point, it's a great deal
for the team. He's very versatile. He can play in
the power player up the lineup and a pinch if
he had to.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
Ye, I'll give you that.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
But there's no complexity to that deal. It's not like
Connor Zari where it's like, you know, they're likely pushing
for a term and dollar and the flames to probably
thinking more Bridge because of his knee problems and or
knee injuries issued say should say has problems at this point,
but like there's that feeling out what is he? What
isn't he? Type of thing that happens all the time
with skilled players like that. So the possible the one

(13:21):
to me, it's like I think Conroy just said, Okay,
like this one, based on the discussions, is not going
to get done today. I'm gonna shift my attention here,
get the easy ones knocked off the list, and come
back to this. I agree, show this guy. I'm gonna
show this guy and building a team around him with
the players we should have got possible sity who are important.
I'm gonna let this ruminate, you know, kind of think
it over, have some conversation with the agent and come

(13:42):
back to that because the two big pieces now, obviously
Zari is the biggest one, which we need signed before camp,
and then the next thing is Dustin Wolf extension, which
sounds like it's heading into positive direction based on what
Wolf said at the golf tournament last week.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
Yeah, but let's talk about Tho Sari first. I want
to I want to get to that, though what I
don't know what's going on. None of us do, right,
We read the reports and we speculate, right, That's what
we all do. I would speculate that the flames are
in that low threes, and I would speculate the csari's
probably two million different than that. And I hope they

(14:16):
meet in the middle, and I hope this gets done
before camp for the sake of the player and the team.
I think this has to get done for the sake
of the player, and probably should get done for the
sake of the team. I'm interested to see where this
one lands. I'm honestly, I'm a lot surprised that this
is a drug out with this long I am.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
Yeah, it's okay. Again, It's kind of a hard one
to call because the player's shown tremendous potential, but hasn't,
you know, put up that one big season yet to
really earn you that hefty payday or that long term contract.
So I don't think either party has any interest in
dragging this out. So I think within a couple of
weeks you'll see something to get done. And I do

(14:57):
suspect it's going to be a bridge deal, which is
probably been a official missire too in that as much
as you'd like the long term commitment, I mean, he's
going to try to hit the next couple of seasons
out of the park.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
I think with the injuries, I think that's all you
can offer right now as a team. And I don't
think that's a slight hitsari And I don't think you're
you know, you're insulting him by that. I think there's
justification that that warrants that. And let's just hope there's
no hard feelings on this and we hope this gets done.
And I can almost bet your money that since this
is the last show of season six and we'll be
taken a few weeks off, that it's going to happen

(15:28):
as soon as we're done producing this show. Yes, yep,
in a true podcasting form Onto Wolf, though you. You
mentioned just a moment ago that the talks have been
good and the things they're moving in the right direction,
and are you steadfast that this needs to be done
before season starts? Are you fine? Because I'm fine on

(15:49):
this one.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Well, the first thing before before I jump into that,
I just want to mention that on the the NHL website,
on the active roster of LANs Connors Aris not on
it because he doesn't have a contract, I guess, but
like Jacob Bactagulea, Andrew Bash, all these clerk bushup, they're
all on here because they're all gonna be entering camp.
But we're sorry, he doesn't have a contract. He's not
actually listed on the roster right now, which is really weird,

(16:11):
a little bit un suibl liquid frankly, but it's also
just a clerical thing.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Starting to get stressed, then if I can ease your mind,
he's listed on Puck Pedias on the roster.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Okay, yeah, okay, that helps. But as far as Wolf goes,
I'm not stressed over it. And then everything sounds like
it's gonna get done. But I'm not stressed because I
also know, as I think the team and anybody else
in the league has watched him play and actually watched
him play, not these idiots and the big markets that
don't pay attention to the teams. You just go max
term and big money sign it. Oh apps, man, he's

(16:46):
so talented, Like you know, this isn't gonna be a
Rick ty Pietro type deal. I mean, it's not gonna
be that long, first of all, because it can't be.
But I mean, yeah, I and at his age, I
go eight years, Like you try to get him around
seven and a half eight million, would say, but good luck,
because he's probably gonna want more than that based on
how he's played so far releast, but gosh, I guess
my point is, like I can't preak that contract, but

(17:08):
I have no hesitation in all about paying the kid.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
You have the balls to sign somebody for eight years
right now, Like I have the most trust in him.
I love what I saw last year. I love every
bit of it. He proved me wrong big time last year.
Like not that I said he wasn't gonna be good,
because I thought he was gonna be good. I didn't
think he's gonna be as impactful as he was. And
I'm the first one to admit that, but like me

(17:31):
to stroke a check for eight years, I just for
a goalie especially.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
I guess I'm stressed either way, Like I feel like
this will get done, Like I do. I feel like
this will get done. Will So what do you make
of him not being on? Like some people were upset
about this on X Today about him not being on
the Olympic Orientation Camp roster for kem USA, it didn't

(17:59):
surprise me, and that's.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
I mean, it didn't surprise me because these you know,
the directors of these teams are a lot of them
are dinosaurs and kind of idiots in a way. He
did everything he should do based especially on his competition
to be on that team. So I wasn't surprised. But
I think it's absolutely stupid and speak to a lot
of what's wrong with hockeying today's world. Tell me, give

(18:25):
me a good reason why Dustin Wolf shouldn't be in
that camp versus uh, God, who else is in that camp?
I'm I have it.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
I saved it. It's uh Joey.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Joey to Hellibuck, Yeah makes sense. Joey Decord is the one.
I'm like, how do you take Joey Decord over Dustine Wolf.

Speaker 1 (18:44):
How do you take swimming after last year over I
like the hell of buck Otinger. I'm not arguing that
at all, Like I'm just not but quite honestly, like
as a Flames fan and being a selfish prick that
I am, Like, I'm just fine with him sitting out.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Oh yeah, from our team's perspective, certainly. I mean, you
can make a similar case for why is Nads and
Cadri going to Team Canada's camp.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
You know what, though, that one doesn't surprise me as much.
I mean, at his age, it was a one good year,
like a really good year. Like, I'm not slight in
his year. Last year was amazing and god knows we
need it again this year. But I don't feel like
that is as big of a slight.

Speaker 2 (19:25):
I don't think it's as big of a slight, but
it you know, you can't tell me everybody on the
Team Canada orientation camp deserves there would be O their
over Nusan Kadri. I just I think it's a it's
a it's a snub, but on a smaller scale. I agree, Yeah,
And then we and then we were being talked about
like a tweener like it's some idiot. Maybe it was
Bleacher Report. I forget who to help put this list together,
but I shouldn't say Bleacher broke. There was somebody else,

(19:46):
But anyway, I saw it, you know, a list of
every team's best defenseman, and some moron put Rasmus Anderson
as the Flame's best defenseman. Like you want to tell
me you've never watched a goddamn game of Calgary Flames
hockey in your life in the last three.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Thank you for the for the promotion on Anderson. Maybe
a GM will read your craziness and and throw us
some stuff here because I want this deal done well, so.

Speaker 2 (20:12):
Do why and so does everybody else. I just can't fathom,
Like Mackenzie Wieger is a stalwart in all three zones
like I, and Anderson at his best can't touch him.
So I just but it just blew my mind. And
after the season Anderson had last year, for anybody to
suggest that Anderson's the Flame's best defenseman is like, okay,
that's you're just showing the world that you don't know

(20:34):
hockey at all. In my opinion, anyway, I'm with you,
but I agree with you. I guess I will dive
into this because we'll be diving in new until it's done. Like,
I really don't like bringing a player into camp that
we know we're trading.

Speaker 1 (20:47):
I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
It's a distraction. No matter what anybody says, whatever Conrad says,
Anderson says, it's a distraction, it's needless.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
The team is sure as hell not going to come
out and say it's a just action. Have you ever
heard a team say, yo, it's a giant distraction.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Well, of course not, but it is. But but they
try to downplay it so much that it's like, Okay,
come on, you got like you know, it's just I
don't know. It's just so frustrating and like if an
amount of money in term he wants an amount of
you know, fantastic blue chip prospect defense we have and
Anderson's basically said that himself, like there's just there's no
room unless you're taking a hometown discount.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
What does that even look like? I don't even know anymore,
Like I've lost mathematical grasp, but what I would be
happy with anymore because I've almost written office like it's
it's a ninety nine point nine percent chance he moves on,
So let's do it now. And I know maybe the
you know, they're like, well, the offers coming in now,
aren't gonna I hate to say it, I don't know

(21:47):
that the offers get bigger.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
The only thing we would make an offer get bigger
is if somebody gets hurt in camp and another team.

Speaker 1 (21:55):
But if it's a team that he doesn't want to
re sign with, it's a pure rental then and then
I don't know what it gets. And we you know,
you can name off a ton of past rentals that
have that have really got big bucks for the team.
I just I just don't know everything longer it goes on.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
Well, the thing is is that one of those teams
is going to hope for the opposite of what happened
Nico Ranton and Carolina. Right, they're going to take a
chance and acquire him and then spend the season trying
to givin some to stay. And if it gets them
out of a hole because they're missing a top defenseman
to injury and Anderson plugs that hole for them, it's
still worth a gamble in that respect, right, if they're
expected to be a contending team, So what.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
Does he have for a move clause right now. I'm
just trying to look here.

Speaker 2 (22:40):
I don't remember the specifics.

Speaker 1 (22:42):
Was a ten team and I might be wrong on that.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
No, that sounds correct actually, but let's just double check.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Actually, fire shots on me there, side shot Claude, let
me use his agent. I don't know if I like that?

Speaker 2 (23:02):
Is he really?

Speaker 1 (23:03):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (23:03):
Oh yeah he is? Wow?

Speaker 1 (23:08):
Shoot, it doesn't say come on, buck Pedia has everything?
Am I just not seeing this? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (23:14):
I'm looking at it too, and I don't see it.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
I swear I wrote it down. I swear it was
ten teams, sixteen.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
He is a six team no trade clause.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
Where do you see that?

Speaker 2 (23:28):
I just googled it Google.

Speaker 1 (23:31):
Yeah, so he's a sixth team, no trades, so I
can trade him to there's a math on.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
That twenty twenty five of the team's five other teams.
It's a lot of teams, so be four other teams.

Speaker 1 (23:47):
Well we're one of them, right, Oh oh my god?

Speaker 2 (23:54):
Ship anyway, so LA and yeah potential suitors LA and
Auto Lag. I'mle anymore. But point being is that circumstances
can change such that somebody's gonna say, fuck it, we
need him, right.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
Ah, yeah, and that's all we hope happens.

Speaker 2 (24:10):
Right well, And the other thing too that's gonna happen
is maybe there's a team going into camp that thinks,
you know, they've got a guy like a nobody else
has one of these, but we have a zay in Parak. Right,
Maybe somebody else has a you know, a young defensive
that they think is you know, he's gonna make the
team at a camp, he's gonna be in great shape.
Blah bla blah. He shows up, out of shape, he
shows up, gets hurt, he shows up, he's not quite ready.
Like there's gonna be something where a team has to

(24:32):
change course. And at the very least, even if he
deals and get done, they're going to turn to the
Flames and say, you know what, we think we might
be interested in Anderson. And then maybe the Flames called
the last team to call and say, hey, so and
so wants him. Now you know you want to up
your offer. So and this is the problem with all
of this, right And because we always have that lull
and lach line through August with with free agency, trade

(24:53):
just general roster movement, we've never had it be this dead.
Because I've mentioned in social media several times. Nobody has
been able to counter me and say, uh, the twenty
seventeen offseason was just as bad, right, this has been horrendous.

Speaker 1 (25:09):
I don't know why.

Speaker 2 (25:10):
I just I don't and I don't know why either,
But what but the good news, I would think, And
it's it's kind of like people waiting for the Marxist
revolution to happen, right, the same as all the insiders saying, Oh,
there's going to be a flood of stuff happening. Well,
it ain't happening yet. Something is going to start to
cause this wheel to turn and then all of a
sudden trade scenarios become, you know, like a crazy example.

(25:31):
I mentioned it yesterday to somebody, was whoever saw shaweb
pica suba happening? Right, I remember, yeah, And we all
thought at the time that the Canadians got fleeced, and
then it was the other way around. So something is
going to change to spur on a possible trade, hopefully
before camp. But this, this this deadness can't last forever.

(25:54):
And you know, for all of our sakes, I hope
it breaks real soon because the fact we had to
talk about the outside of the show, Travis Hammonkmeila Luchis
in twenty twenty five, as News tells you how slow
it is. Oh yeah, and I'll disrespect those players, but
we're not talking ten years ago right where they were,
you know, sought after players.

Speaker 1 (26:11):
Right. Oh. I've been thinking this week about the team
and the season, and I'm kind of just mentally prepare
myself for what lies ahead and where do you see
some of the We'll talk players first and then we
can talk about the team as a whole. But like,

(26:33):
what are your expectations this year? Like we you know,
I had a cadre who had like a really really
good year. Can he replicate that? Is Jonathan hubert O
going to continuous trend upward? Can Coleman and Backland continue
to put up points albeit both of them were down
last year? Well they bounce back? I mean, where do

(26:54):
we go this year?

Speaker 2 (26:56):
I think a lot of it depends on Morgan Frost
and Jill Ferraby how much they're going to contribute, right, hug,
because they can fit you know, all throughout that lineup.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
I think it's a playoff team.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
You do, huh?

Speaker 2 (27:12):
Because Dustin Wolf is so good? Uh, Matt Cornado's gonna
score thirty plus. I'm convinced of that Huber doing Kadrey,
I expect similar seasons out of them. Uh. Connor Zuri
is high my list of guys that like he could
really make or break the team. I think if he
plays the whole season, he's gonna score sixty points and

(27:33):
may and I probably sound optimistic in a lot of this,
Zayn Perrek will be a regular, although probably be sheltered
a bit because defensively, I don't think he's ready for
the NHL. But with the right partner like a Kevin
Ball maybe who will be or even Bradon Bahal. It's
gonna be interesting to see that. The biggest challenge is
gonna be those aging centers back on Kaudre right Cadre,
I think's gonna have another strong offensive year, but defensively,

(27:58):
you know there's cracks in the arm or not. I
think it was ever the best defensive center anyway, but
you know, we're we need somebody else to step up.
I don't think going to be else's right. But the
big the big dark horse to me going to the
season that could really change your fortunes too, uh is
Sam Honsick. So let's see what happens there. And there's
a lot of storylines. I can't you know, I'm all
over the place here because I can't just pick one.

(28:18):
There's just so many things going on with this team
that and there's so much, so many question marks. How
Well's pre gonna do his first year, you know, first
full year in the NHL. Sorry, you good sign? How
will he perform? Miss Anderson going to be around? Is
Dustin Wolf is gonna have some kind of a sophomore slump?
Not that I can see it, but maybe, like I
don't know, what are your expectations of the team. What
do you think is gonna happen?

Speaker 1 (28:38):
Maybe not as optimistic as yours. See. One of the
things is like I honestly believe like the sky's a
limit this year, but I also see a strong possibility
that it could be a regression here. I mean, we've
dealt with so many years of like good flames, bad flames,
good flames, bad flames, good flames. Yeah, I'm trying to
I believe me, believe me, And inside I'm I bitched

(29:01):
about all last year. I'm cheering for this team to
win Hell or high Water. I just worry a little
bit in the fact that it's like, Okay, Kadriy had
such a good year last year that it's really hard
to replicate that actually a year older. Even though I'm
the biggest Backland supporter, I do believe Frost and Pastasil
can both have good years. I believe Klapkikin and I

(29:22):
believe Farby will have a good year. I believe that Cornado,
I agree with you, is gonna put up some points,
and Zari is like the wild card with a much
higher upside than a downside. Blake Coleman, I think we
know what we got there. The guy that I look
and I'm like, the one guy that really needs to
step up is Sharon Govich, Like we need Sharon Govic.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (29:43):
And I look at the back end and I'm like, well,
I want Anderson to be gone. And I voice said
strongly already in this show. I like Ball, I like Weiger,
I like Baaul in the right slot. I like Hanley
in the right slot.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (30:02):
I don't want Marimana on this team, and I don't
really want Jake ban other than a seventh man correct
will be on the roster. And I don't know how
I honestly feel about that. I'm ready to watch him,
Like I'm excited as hell to watch him. I just
I feel like if if the rules had changed this year,
having him be in the A for a little while
would help. Now, the rules in the CBA don't allow

(30:24):
that right now. We can't sas because he has nothing
to prove there. So he's gotten a roster spot by default.

Speaker 2 (30:34):
It's got nothing to prove and nothing to do, you
know what I mean, Like just MIEA.

Speaker 1 (30:39):
He'd be wasting his time. So he's on this roster
right and I'm totally fine with that. I wish you
would have had to bust disaster earnest spot. I do
believe he'll come into camp after his showing last year
and be a new player. I really do believe that.
I think that was an eye opener for him, and
I think it helped him. Yeah, right, I think he's

(31:00):
gonna be fine this year. I hope we shelter him.
I hope we don't expect we're gonna have to hop
in minutes here, and I hope we don't expect to
dress him every single night, because I don't think that's healthy.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
I think, well, I don't know he's so good. He's
so good offensively, I mean he can. I think he
run a NHL power play already. But defensively, that's gonna
be hard to shelter him, you know, big time. And
I don't I don't care what anybody says. He's the
difference in playing defense in the NHL versus any league,
whether it's EHL, which is a tier below, or several
cheers below at the HL, it is a massive, massive difference.

(31:34):
So that's why goals like guys, excuse me, like Michael
Stone and Seabrook, they're gonna be spending a lot of
time with saying parak in terms of using an active stick,
you know, staring guys in the corners, trying to clear
the net front like because offensively, even at the NHL level,
I don't really think he's gonna have anthing to prove
he can put up fifty to sixty points in his
rookie year. I'm pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (31:52):
I think so too. I don't worry about him offensively
one bit. I do. I think I think his defensive
composure and it is it's going to be a struggle
for him, and I believe we are the right leadership
behind him.

Speaker 2 (32:04):
Yeah, I just I do.

Speaker 1 (32:06):
I think it's going to be a little bit of
a struggle. I don't know that we don't see Hunter
Bristovitch this year.

Speaker 2 (32:11):
I don't want to sell him.

Speaker 1 (32:12):
It just not no matter how much, right, especially if
Anderson gets moved.

Speaker 2 (32:16):
Stavich and Perk could be fun to have both in
the team. Wouldn't that be exciting?

Speaker 1 (32:19):
Right? It would? But I think there's a trade off there.
I think there's a lot of I think there's a
stronger possibility of us having a tough time this year
than there is of us being a playoff team. And
I'm not trying to be Debbie Downer here, but I
look at the Western Conference and I sit and I go, geez,

(32:41):
you know, can the Flames get ninety six points that's
what they had last year? I don't know, Like, I
really don't know. You take Anderson out, albeit at a
down here. You know, Dan Viladar was there too, boost
Wolf and help wolf. Wolf doesn't have that safety blanket

(33:02):
this year. How does he react to that? Is there
a slight regression? I mean, there's so many question marks
and then, and believe me, the question marks can go
good too. So I'm not like going in a towel
or anything like that. I'm just saying that. Like I
sit and I look at the Western Conference, and I'm like, well,
Vegas is better, La is better, Edmonton's maybe a tiny

(33:23):
bit worse. I have a hard time believing Vancouver isn't
a much better team this year. Anaheim's improved, Seattle's improved
a little bit. San Jose has not. Winnipeg's good, Dallas
is good, Colorado's good, Minnesota's good, Saint Louis is good.
Like I'm like, is there room for us with the
young roster that we have? And I'm not boohooing it

(33:46):
because I want us to be young and I want
us to, you know, be that stepping stone. But I
do worry a little bit. I worry about the reality
of where this team is, and I'm I need to
hone my expectations down. I think, I guess. Let me
put you this way. If we prove that Perek and

(34:10):
Bruce Davish our NHL players, we get a good return
for Anderson, and we figure out that connors Area is
a top six center or winger, and Sharon Golvic scores

(34:30):
twenty goals, We're cartwheels even.

Speaker 2 (34:33):
With funny I want thirty again.

Speaker 1 (34:35):
Well, I'm I mean, I'm just being realistic here, Like
I'm happy as hell if all those things happen and
we missed the playoffs, just like last year. You know,
we missed the playoffs at one point, and it crushed.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
Me, right we did. He miss by one point, had
the same amount of points.

Speaker 1 (34:51):
I remember being upset about that, But then I remember thinking, well,
we learned what wolf is this year. We learned this.
We learned this, like we learned so much last year,
so many things that are going to help us now
for the future that I can't help but sit and
think that last year wasn't a good learning year for
this team.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
Well, of course it was. Were miles out of where
people expected us to be. But I do have a
question on something you did not address. For all things
you addressed to, there's one thing I'm curious for your
take on prospotat For COOLi who's the backup goalie.

Speaker 1 (35:22):
I think it's going to be Prospatov, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:27):
I do. I don't want to write off Tevin Cooley
at that and don't really.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
Really am, but I will tell you this, I don't
want to go into the season with three goalies, not
because we're afraid to put one of them on waivers.
I'm not. I don't want to play that game.

Speaker 2 (35:43):
None of us will ever forget the rto Ramo Hiller debacle, right,
you remember it?

Speaker 1 (35:47):
I know you remember it?

Speaker 2 (35:48):
And the worst one of all time in the NHL.

Speaker 1 (35:52):
Was it?

Speaker 2 (35:53):
Four of them? No, three of them, Legacy Hasseck and
Joseph and Detroit. It was the wild this because Hassock decided,
like midw through the year to come back. It was,
Oh man, where if I'd find a picture that it
was so weird to look at? I do remember that
now that you say that, it's just insane, just insane.

(36:14):
But yeah, we don't.

Speaker 1 (36:15):
Yeah, am I being too negative?

Speaker 2 (36:19):
No?

Speaker 1 (36:20):
Like I'm just trying to tell you if I'm trying
to be real and I'm not trying to like say,
I don't want this team to make and I'm sure
as hell not cheering for a number one pick or anything.
But is as much as I could see this team
coming out of the gates and being good, I could
see them coming out of the gates and struggling miserably.
And I look at our schedule and it's it's it's

(36:40):
a it's a gauntlet to start, and uh, I don't know.
I don't know what direction this team's gonna go like,
I don't know, but I do know that I want
Anderson move before the start of the season. I do
know a few things. I mean, that is one I want.

Speaker 2 (36:57):
I don't know, but it doesn't want that.

Speaker 1 (36:59):
So who do you think? Who do you think are
backup goalie? And and who do you think or how
many games do you think Wolf.

Speaker 2 (37:07):
Will play prospetav I think because of his size for one.
And I'm just not sure how co is gonna respond
to his injury from last year. I would say Dustin
Wolf is gonna play sixty games, Yeah, which is a lot.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
But let me throw something at you that is found's
about as far fetched as probably anything I've ever said
on the podcast.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
Wow, okay, laid on me.

Speaker 1 (37:37):
Is there a chance like we see a goalie like
say or somebody that like as a hell of a
camp and earns that spot?

Speaker 2 (37:44):
No, Okay, I just know I fought out, well, who's
the last goaltender to really do that?

Speaker 1 (37:55):
You're not even gonna believe who comes to mind when
you say that?

Speaker 2 (37:58):
Please tell me I'm barrasso. Wow, holy shit, Yeah that
wasn't yesterday.

Speaker 1 (38:07):
Well and went right to the NHL.

Speaker 2 (38:10):
Yes, yeah, yeah, those Americans love to do that. I
don't really, yeah, I don't. I'm trying to think it
was lastch. I know, goalies came out of nowhere, like
Johann Heedburg when he had that you know, miracle run
with the Penguins. Cam Ward spelled Martin Gerber for the

(38:31):
Hurricane so they won the Cup.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
Right, Yeah, but he, I mean, he didn't like come
out of like he.

Speaker 2 (38:36):
Was fairly highly touted. Yeah, but I mean just guys
that just exceed all expectations as goaltenders. But in more
recent memory, like you know, Matt Murray and Pittsburgh when
he you know, took over Marc Andre Fleury and Tristian
Jerry looked like he was gonna chance. Like, goalies are
just so fickle though, man.

Speaker 1 (38:53):
That's why. That's why you know, I believe me, Kyle.
If like tomorrow it comes out with that wolf signed
for eight years, that eight million, I'm gonna be happy. Like,
don't get me wrong, mhm. I just you know, but
you say it like I say it too, Like goalies
are fickle and like things happen, and like everything. I

(39:15):
always like say to myself, I would never sign anybody
for longer than five years. I say that all the time.
But I know I also know that if I was
a GM in the NHL, that would be completely unrealistic
for me to say or do that, Right, I think
every genera and general manager in the league would probably say, no,
I don't ever want to sign anybody over five years.
I just don't have a choice.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
Percent So right, I don't know as far as the
goal unders go, as the position goes, I mean that
this the situation right now, despite the we're gonna Misstanvilour.
I think I'm not expecting either coolier prospectof to blow
the doors off as far as a backup goes. But
we are in the most enviable position we've been in

(39:57):
since they keep herself with the gold here that we
have as.

Speaker 1 (40:00):
A shot the Giant win last year. To see what
we got in the Giant win, I.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
Just wish you'd got that thirtieth win. God, that was disappointing.

Speaker 1 (40:09):
I forgot about that. Gosh, what do you bring up
those things?

Speaker 2 (40:12):
Yeah, I guess I'm the one being negative anyway. So
coming up, because now we're getting close enough, we're deep
enough into August that we can start kind of telling
people where we're at. We do expect to have more
things to talk about, you know, in a few weeks time,
especially as we roll into September. So we are getting
ready to launch season seventy seven seven.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
I believe is it not our fourth season starting next
month together?

Speaker 2 (40:42):
I believe so, Yes, Yeah, it is.

Speaker 1 (40:43):
Actually yet I remember putting up the posts for like
coming soon co hosts, you know, and I announcing you
you know, joining me. Holy cow, it doesn't seem like
it was four years ago, but it is.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
I think that's strange.

Speaker 1 (40:59):
See, in seven, we're gonna kick off on in mid September.
We're shooting for like a September seventeenth release. Camps will
be opening about that time, and then we're gonna go
weekly from there with you know, flames talk every we
were We've been weekly seriously since uh last September fifteenth,
I believe it was, We've been weekly since then.

Speaker 2 (41:20):
Do you believe that? No? I can't.

Speaker 1 (41:22):
We've enough to talk about.

Speaker 2 (41:24):
Yeah, it's crazy, absolutely madness.

Speaker 1 (41:27):
It'll be a little bit of a new look. It'll
be Kyle and I of course, but it'll have U.
The X Factor will be back. We'll have some new graphics,
a little bit fresher look. I don't know, it's it's
it's Flames Hockey Talk, and we're gonna do it every
week because we love doing it and we appreciate all
all the supporters out there. We got a really nice

(41:48):
message on X here a couple of weeks ago from
Richard Junkers that I enjoy the show and listen to
every new episode. Keep it up. I'm an effort to
live for all of us to listen, and those are
the things that keep us going.

Speaker 2 (42:01):
Man.

Speaker 1 (42:01):
And I read those things and it's like, oh, that's
so exciting because I know I love doing this and
I couldn't wait for tonight so we could talk about
some some recent stuff, right.

Speaker 2 (42:11):
Yeah, Well, it's to Richard's point. I mean, there's definitely
no lack of effort with how slow it's been of late.
But that being said, you know, those little breaks and
the lack of regular NHL activity give us a chance
talk about some pretty cool stuff on our special episodes.
There'll be a lot more of those come down the
pipe in the future, as well, there is, and.

Speaker 1 (42:25):
We got a lot of topics that Kyle and I
have written down, and I enjoyed the special episodes. It's
it helps you break up that season a little bit
and it fills in those timeframes when there's not Flames
new news and stuff. So we're gonna be rolling those out,
maybe you know, one or three during the Olympic break
and then during the off season again next year. But
a lot of fun doing those, a lot a lot
of good discussion.

Speaker 2 (42:46):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely so. And there may be some schedule
changes along the way, typically because of you know, attending
Flames games, so that too.

Speaker 1 (42:55):
Yeah, I mean, Kyle and I have a life, and
but we we will put over a show every week
and we target Tuesday releases is kind of our our
day we release, and we vary on that a little bit.
If the Flames do play Monday night, then we usually
release the day before or the day after, and we
fluctuate slightly, but try to most times. If you pull

(43:17):
up your your Spotify or your Apple on a Tuesday morning,
you're gonna see us there with a new episode.

Speaker 2 (43:22):
Yeah, exactly. That should be a lot of fun. I mean,
there's a lot of question marks as there is every
NHL season. But let us know what you guys think.
Because the team going to make the playoffs, we're gonna
take a step back like we did, you know, fifteen
sixteen after that fifteen playoff run. For example, progression progress,
bit of both, certain players step up, certain players you know,

(43:43):
start to fall off. It's gonna be interesting, to be
very very interesting.

Speaker 1 (43:48):
It will be. It'll be a lot of fun. All right.
Five sounds kind and I are going to get the
hell out of here. And that's it for season six. Man,
I need fifty five episodes in season six and I'm
ready for season seven. Here here, give us a break.
We're back mid September. Questions, comments, everything, let us go
on social media's email us, do any of those things.
If something breaks, we'll fire off a few shorts or

(44:10):
something like that to uh to fill the time in
between until then. Season seven starts mid September. Check us
out and enjoy what's left for your something in flames sence.

Speaker 2 (44:20):
Okay, keep it real, just.

Speaker 1 (44:24):
Me myself and have this comfy fix ms.
