Speaker 1 (00:28):
Welcome to Flames Unfiltered with host Ratt Brood Kyle Lewis
talking Flames hockey every single week and it's a regular episode. Kyle,
we'll get some stuff, some off season stuff to talk
about here in Calgary.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah, a little bit, and it's gonna be probably quite
a lot more in the next few weeks, so we'll
be a few regular, regular episodes coming up.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Okay, I gotta get something off my chest right away,
and I pray that you're not one of these guys
I'm gonna have to come through the camera and we're
gonna have to have another fight. You're not uh uh
Canadian citizen cheering for the oilers just because they're from Canada,
are you like?
Speaker 2 (01:08):
I didn't prep me for this question at all?
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Not at all. We don't.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
We don't ever battles on air.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
No, it's a little more complicated on that. I kind
of had to play the part when I was at Edmonton,
and I was happy to do so with with my
ex of the time. You know. It was she's a
huge Oathers fan and I was trying to be supportive.
And there's some photos circulating of me wearing an off
color shirt with an oiler's logo on it. I hate
(01:38):
to admit that on the show, but I will say,
you know it was. It was something anybody's been in
a relationship to really care about. You always do things
you don't necessarily want to do.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
So No, when I asked this question, Kyle, I did
not know what was going to go down that road.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
I didn't know I was gonna go on that roecause
I'm like, do I really want to get into this?
But you know what, I'll go through a bit of
a hard time. And I'll tell you how I know.
I'm going through a little of a hard time. So
I'm doing two things right now. I'm I'm getting rid
of a lot of stuff like old books, old clothes,
just stuff. I got way too much stuff in my house.
There's my ex with no doubt, tell anybody who cared
to listen. And I'm playing more video games. And when
(02:16):
I'm playing more video games, it means I'm not in
a good place mentally because I'm trying to distract myself
from my thoughts. Right So yeah, now people will say
to me, it's like, at least true aware, that's the
first step. It's not the first step. If you don't
do anything beyond that, right, It's like, yeah, my life sucks,
(02:37):
I know it, but I'm now to be fair, to
be fair, you know too. And I'm gonna call my
ax again because I do love her and you know,
hope things will eventually work out. She did wear this
very hat for me at a Flames games others fan,
so I had to return the favor. Now did I
have to return it in the context of a playoff game?
(03:00):
This game in December, probably.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Not Tuesday in February. I maybe let you off the
hook now, I'm a little yeah, well, well, you know, hey,
and we talked about this before, like maybe me living
in the States, albeit at the border. For me, I
never look at these things, and I think I'm speaking
for pretty much all of America. I don't look at
this as a Canadian American thing at all. It's just
(03:23):
another It's two NHL teams. And I am not an
Order Panthers team a fan at all.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
I'm not.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
I'm not and I but we all know my hatred
for the Oilers, albeit not as bad as the Canucks.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
That is the way it is.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
But I don't I just I don't want to listen
to this garbage for the next year's coming. I'd rather
listen to we still don't have a goalie talk, right.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Well, okay, yeah, there's two things. No, there's multiple things,
but there's two things. Are gonna mention it quick. Then
we'll get into some other stuff as to why I
struggle a little bit with the oilther I struggle with
them because I'm a Flames fan, of course, but I
also struggled because I watched that video I think that
Amazon had released to McDavid last year in the final,
when he's thrown.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
A town tantrum.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
And I know he's relatively young, I know the stakes
are high. I know it's emotional, and I'm not going
to sit here and pretend to have any idea what
it's like to be in the shoes, because God knows,
I don't. I suck at hockey. But that to me
was like, come on, man, you've got to be better
than that. That's not being a leader, you know.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Well, that's right. It's exactly what I was just going
to say, is that's not like a true leader.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, But to be fair, people called City Crosby crybaby
for a long time too, and maybe he was when
he was younger, but he's one of the most mature,
respected captains in the history of the sport at this point.
So I digress.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
Okay, let's let's change subjects. I got two more things
before we get you're ready for that. When you went
on the relationship thing, I'm like, whoa, that derailed quickly.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Well, you got to talk about your feelings, man, It's the.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Truth though where we have we have stuff in our
lives too.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Write yeah, good and bads.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Right. Speaking of bads, this is another Canucks thing that
irritates to live in daylights.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Out of me.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Did you happen to see the HL playoff game?
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Oh? Yes, yes, yes, yes.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Okay, I never did hear a justification? Well what happened?
So the listeners they didn't see this. The Charlotte Checkers,
which is the Florida Panthers my AHL team against the
Vancouver Abbertsford Canucks. Vancouver Canucks AHL team are in Game
one of the playoffs. In double overtime, Sea lobs Is
(05:35):
got his back turned. Both centers initiate, the ref blows
his whistle, drops the puck, and the Canucks forward win
of the center wins it right into his own net
as his goalies just turning around and they call it
a no goal. Any explanation. I don't know what. I
haven't heard it, and I don't know what there's going
(05:55):
to be to make. And then to make it worse,
Abbtsford scores minutes later and wins it in double overtime.
This is the this is an officiating joke.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Well, the justification was allegedly that Selous wasn't ready. But
I immediately.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Close the whistle and your center, that is your I
had I head coaching my daughter's hockey this year. I
had a little come to Jesus, a little girl about
before you take it in in zone. No I did.
I told him, before you go in to take a
draw in our defensive zone, you turn around and make
(06:35):
sure your goalie is ready. If your goalie is not ready,
you better not turn around and initiate the draw. That
is the center's job. HM.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
It's funny. It immediately immediately to think of Roman check
Manic dropping his glove in the two thousand and two
playoffs against Toronto. He dropped his glove and he'd bent
over to picking up on the pocket right over his
shoulder in the empty net. I forget just counted and yeah,
and God rest the soul chech matic passed away not
too long ago. But things like that, it's like, it
(07:07):
just seems to me in pro sports and large, maybe
more so in hockey, or just because I watch more hockey,
they just they think they got the rules figured out
kind of, and then something happens as well, shit, what
do we do here?
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Well, I know, but that one's a pretty cut and
dry though. Once you referee initiates the play with a
blow and whistle like it doesn't matter, like it doesn't matter,
then well.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
I suppose it shouldn't, but for some reason they decided
it did. And uh. Also, let's just point out, just
to give a bit of credit where it's due, Florida
and Charlotte are both in the respective finals. Man, you're
doing something righty for minor league team and your pro
team are both in you know, their perspective finals. Like,
that's wild.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
That is it is, That's that's that's crazy.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
One more thing. I saw another thing, and when I
saw it, I thought, oh, I would almost called you.
You should have, but I didn't because I want to.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Told you depressed, I'll take a friendly.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
I wanted to save it for the show.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Kyle, Oh, okay, okay, I'm.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Glad the show comes before our friendship. All right, laid
on me. What do you got.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
I'm not so sure that without the show we have
a friendship.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
We absolutely do not.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
We would have never had we would have never had,
not a chance.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Okay. So I saw this on TikTok. It said, what
is the last unused NHL jersey number? There was one
that was used. I don't know how many years ago
it was. I'd say within the last ten years. It
was the last number that nobody had in the NHL
had ever born in a regular season game. It had
(08:36):
never been worn. Do you know what number that is?
And I can tell you the player. You're never gonna guess,
but do you know that number? I guess wrong when
I did it. I said fifty seven. I said fifty seven.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
It's not Trevor Van meansnake fifty seven. I wanted to
say sixty nine, just to ma sure.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
When I was watching somebody.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
I mean thousands of people said that. All right, now,
I have no idea.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
What is it? Number eighty four?
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Eighty four?
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Nikole Kobowski, No, he wore, though.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
He did after though after a lot undressed.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
In Oh that was so close to that, they played
the same I know, ah.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
Crazy, all right, this show's over.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
I'm going to hear all.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Right, I'm talking flames about myself.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
That's why should have like that slam door, you know,
sound effect to play. But speaking of.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
Which, let's let's let's positive flame stuff for just one
more one more minute. We're ten minutes into the show.
We haven't talked one thing Flames. That's okay, it's off season.
I want to talk about your hockey for heroes and
I put together a little slide thing too that we
can put up as you described this. We've talked about
this on the shows where Kyle raised money for the
(09:58):
Heart and Stroke Foundation and was able to raise twenty
three and five dollars through listeners, friends, family, acquaintances, who knows.
But first off, everybody, thank you for your donations.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Yeah, it was a great cause.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
And I know Kyle had a great time this weekend
or a couple of weekends ago. It was just a
couple of weekends ago. So you know what, I want
you to buy her off and tell me all about
it because I'm excited to hear it.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Yeah. So it's put on by NAPA, the auto parts
supplier here, and they do want Heli Fox as well.
So I'd heard of hockey heroes for a few years,
but I hadn't ever had the opportune to play until
this year. So I don't even where to begin, but
I guess I'll start for the beginning of the weekend
for me, which was the Thursday night, ended up hanging
out with a really good friend of mine, Scott Hickey,
(10:48):
and then we ended up having some drinks with Matthew
Barnaby and Derek Roy talked about, you know, some of
their adventures post playing. It was this crazy late night.
The next night was the same way. But the next night,
the Friday night, was the night of the draft, where hilariously,
my team elected after much discussion. I think it was
the tenth overall pick decided the draft Zach Cassion of
(11:11):
Evan Toonloler's fame, as you can see in the graphic here,
So it was really really cool. Cassium was super fun
to be around. I took us all out for dinner,
have a lot of drinks together and he shared some
pretty funny stories as well. And then, as you can
see from the pitchers. I mean the whole weekend, Like,
I spent a lot of time Mark j o'donald, get
(11:31):
to play against him, got to play against Andrew Ferrence,
got to hang around Darren McCarty. Actually it was kind
of cool. Farrence and I talked a lot about coming
out of the lockout and how much it hurt the
Flames and how good that team was in five or
six that should have beat the Ducks but didn't. Darren
McCarty said the exact same thing. Talking with Doug Gilmour
(11:53):
was a really really fun experience as well. Didn't get
to play against him, but get to talk lots of
Flames with him and his current role an ambassador for
the Leafs, and Gee Carboneau and his role with the Canadians.
It was just a surreal experience. It felt like I
was on vacation. I mean, I slept in my own
bed every night, but it felt like I was away
because it was so surreal. You know, go to the
rink every day and you have your own stall, and
(12:15):
there's massage therapists on staff acci you know, pull a
muscle from being so dehydrated from all the booze. Probably
the funniest thing that, And there was a few things
that happened, including you know, karaoke night with Cassie and
singing strawberry wine. Uh and and a conversation right in
front of me where Giordano and Cassio were talking about
(12:35):
how Geo was trying to get Kachuk to fight Cassian
when you should.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
Have the first time. Yeah, it was.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
It was just a wild experience all around. And Doug
Gilmour ended up signing a stick for me, and knowing
that I'm a I may have mentioned before, but knowing
that I was a Flames fan, he said, you want
me to sign it thirty nine. I said, Dougie, if
you signed that ninety three, I'll tell you you can
put that stick think but a real gentleman. All the
guys were great, The bows and teams are all great.
(13:04):
The draft night was probably the coolest because Rod Black
from TSN actually mcd it. Jerry Cheevers was the master
ceremonies alongside Rod Black for the host, I guess you'd say.
And it was just so cool to sit like at
your own draft table. Your jerseys are all lad in
your chairs for you, and you actually sit there and
huddle like Okay, who's left on the board. So Jarednah
(13:25):
was the first overall pick selected by a buddy mine
Matt Tall, And then when it came to our pick,
like when they picked Cassie, and I couldn't stop laughing,
like what, like, what are the odds that the first
year I'm playing this and we get like a renowned
oiler on our team. But he was an absolute beauty.
He started calling me Louis, which is funny because that's
what they called Trevor Lewis when he played in Calgary.
(13:45):
But he was hollering my name from the bench, and
he made a couple of sick passes, scored an unbelievable
shootout goal too. Like anyway, It's just it was way
too much fun. I'll be doing it every year, hopefully
raised more money, and we did one point three million
this year, which is just incredible. But yeah, what a
what a fun experience. I'm still nursing an injury. I
took a shot off the leg by guy. It was
(14:07):
like six foot six from like point blank. My leg
had all swollen and bruised and infected and I had
to get like an ivy And it's a big, long story,
but anyway, it's yeah, it almost killed me, but it
was fun. But you know what, most fun things in
life will damn you're kill you.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
So that's true, true, great story and yeah again, and
we know a few listeners were generous and donated and
thank you. It's it's a great cause and it's not
just the fun that Kyle had, but it's the good
that it went to also. And next year we are
gonna as a podcast support it probably twofold as we'll
(14:44):
start promoting it earlier and really make sure next year
is a success for you and the organization as well.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Yeah, and I should mention too, like one of the
probably coolest thing that happened was I won the silent
auction for the J. J. Dnod Stein jersey and I
get a wicked deal in that I got the picture
with him with the jersey and I was able to
share with him some messages in the Gadaux family and
Geo was really really touched by that. And then he
sought me out after we played against each other just
(15:13):
to give me how and say how great it was
to meet me, and just the most gracious guy could
ever hoped to meet. It's the second time I met him,
but you know, it's been six years since we'd last spoken,
so I don't he remembered me. But it was just
a it was a really cool experience. It kind of
reminded me a lot of how hockey brings people together
in so many different ways. So you know, I'll have
stories from that the rest of my life, even if
I never played it again.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
So, yeah, the hockey family or the hockey world is
a tight family. And yeah, and they do a lot
of good and uh, that's great, great stuff to see
and and a lot of fun too. Flame Stock, we're
fifteen minutes in. We're gonna hit it now. Let's start
off with probably the biggest news over the little break
that we've had. Let's talk about Dustin Wolf and his
(15:58):
runner up for the Calder, Which I mean, if we
would have said at the beginning of the year that
he's going to be the runner up for the Calder,
I think everybody would, all of us Flames fans and
and everybody would have jumped up and down in happiness
for this because this is just this is huge, not
just for him but for the future of the organization.
Right we It's one thing we really learned last year
(16:19):
is that Dustin Wolf is for real and we're super
excited for the future.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
I mean, I'll be honest, like, if if Dustin Wolf,
God Forbid was an empathono oiler, they'd be winning the
Stanley Cup. Because, you know, a good goaltender I think
is a Mission Green on that team, and Dustin Wolf
is I'd put him already against any other goaltender in
the league. The only thing he kind of lacks in
the league to this point is that big game experience.
But if you watch the other day, the Flames posted
video of like the best saves in the season of
(16:47):
Lever had some dandies too.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
But well he did Wow.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Yeah, watching Wolf play the way he like, the way
he reads the play, like when he's low in the
crease and he's you know, he gets a glove up
like he's so I say that he's so much on
the proximity of the pocket all times. He can make
reactionary saves, you know, like nobody's business a lot of movements, insane.
He absolutely wins the Calder if the Flames had made
(17:11):
the playoffs, if the Calder Trophy was solely awarded on
value to their team, Dustin Wolf wins and hands down
he lost to Elaine Hudson because Udson plays in a
scifically larger market in Montreal, and Hudson had a tremendous
season as well.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
He did not No. Lane Hudson had a remarkable, remarkable
career and both Lane Hudson and Dustin Wolf were not
considered favorites for this award coming into the year. Macklin Celebrini,
who was a third place vote getter, was really the
guy targeted to be the favorite heading into the season,
(17:47):
and well Wolf Hudson and Wolf to to do this,
it's quite an honor and the honors don't stop there
for Dustin Wolf, as he was a unanimous choice for
goalie as on the All Star Rookie Team or the
All Rookie Team. He was the runner like he was
also received a third place vote in the VESNA voting,
a fourth place in the Heart and a second and
(18:10):
two third place votes for the Goalie All Star Team too.
So that's a lot of awards for a rookie that
quite honestly, when the season started, we really didn't know
where it was gonna go. We had we had good
projections based off what we had seen in every level
for him. But what an outstanding here.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Oh, it's absolutely incredible. I want to say this too.
So I mentioned before my brother has always enjoyed the fact.
I have no problem, no qualms admitting when my team
is garbage or they do something stupid or whatever. But
in this instance, when we're talking about Dustin Wolf, we
have to mention that, if I'm not mistaken, there was
two people that left him off the Caulder ballot.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Yeah, you see, there was actually three.
Speaker 2 (18:56):
Okay, so those three should we name them? Naw, forget it,
they're not worth mentioning here. Then here's the here's the thing.
And I can't emphasize this enough. If you didn't have
dust A Wolf on your cut, like if you didn't
throw a vote his way in this cald Or race,
if he didn't make it to your ballot, you should
have nothing to do with the sport of hockey because
clearly you don't watch it. And I don't know what
(19:16):
teams these people are watching.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
But you how you can do that.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
I'll give that. I'll give that. The three teams that
they that they represent are Philadelphia, Dallas, and Washington, so.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Two teams in the East. I could maybe see that
somebody watching Dallas.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
I'm sorry, though, No, no, if you left any of
the top three off your list, something's wrong. Yeah, because
they those three were clear cut.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
I mean, okay, let me so, let me ask this
because now I'm curious, who would another goaltender be that
could have made the All Rookie team other than.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
Dust a Wolf. That's a real good question.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
There was, but at the very least, yeah, it tells
you how big like Dust and Wolf didn't come in
and you know, share duties and have a relatively strong year.
He came in absolutely dominated and took the starter's job
pretty quickly and established as from the league's best. And
that's not up for debate. So those guys didn't have
another ballad or idiots. So and that's all the mention
(20:13):
we're gonna give them.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Now, you get me thinking who also be in contention
for All Rookie goalie. I'm gonna look that up later,
but not now. Another thing I wanted to touch on
the Award show is I hated that there really wasn't
an award show, albeit corny, and I hate the corniness
of it. I think they should still do it along
with the draft, but have it be professional and not
stupidly corny like it has been the last half a decade.
(20:37):
I also wanted to touch on a one another thing.
Sean Monahan UH, a former Flame and still a favorite
of many of ours, was this year's recipient for the
Bill Master and Trophy, and that's awarded to a player
who best exemplifies the qualities and present press sverance, UH,
sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. And Johnny Gudreau's wife was
(21:00):
the one who presented it to him at his home.
And I'll tell you what, I don't think that anybody
that has a heart inside of them or feelings inside
of them, I didn't shed a tear watching that video.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Yeah, well, I mean, we all know what could have
been had Monahan and Gadrou played together in Columbus. I
think they would have been a playoff team. And the
friendship between those two was very well documented. And that
video of Monahan congradually Dadreu on the overtime winner against
Dallas in twenty two is one of the most heartfelt
moments that you'll ever see in Flames history and certainly
(21:34):
all of hockey, so well deserved. I mean, and also
considering you know that Monahan went through so much injury
wise and had a just unbelievable what he's come back from.
So it was Yeah, it was pretty touching.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
Yeah, for sure. One other thing that happened during during
our little break from regular episodes, albeit we're still putting
on content every single week, some coaching staff changes, as
Dan Lambert will not return this season, Brad Larson, who
was away and on leave of absence, will be back
for the twenty five to twenty six campaign, and Trent
call who was the HL coach last year who did
(22:09):
fill in for Brad Larson, will stay with the team
and now be a full time assistant. And I know
this was a big thing, and I know you brought
it up many times last year, but what Trent Called
did for Calgary's penalty kill last year was absolutely amazing.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Yeah, I mean, Het very much turned it around. The
guy's been kind a seat for a while, obviously had
a lot of success with a lot of Flames prospects,
and as soon as he got the interim gig, I
kind of had a feeling he's going to be around
to stay because he's just scud of a coach and
has one of the best mustaches you'll ever see. So
we'd be remiss if we did mention that.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
The penalty kill just put in perspective. The penalty kill
was at seventy two point six percent twenty ninth overall
for the first thirty four games Trent Cole steps in.
In the final forty eight games, they were eighty three
point one pc twelfth over all the league impact.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
So just imagine, so you think of how close you
were to the playoffs had he come in maybe five
games sooner and his systems had prevented I don't know,
three or four power play goals. You know where we
talked in playoffs margin for air so thin it.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
Is, it's crazy.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
A couple other things. Let's talk about little news tippets, kidbits. God,
I can't talk to me. That happened today. Actually there
was the Peter Hanlon. He is now the assistant general manager.
He was the vice president of communications with the club.
(23:43):
He steps into an assistant general manager's role. I don't
know a ton of what that means right at the
moment here, but I guess we'll see as he works
on hand at hand with Craig Conray.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
YEP, one of the most well like guys in the
organization and been around for a long time. A little
bit surprised by the appointment, but I don't know a
whole lot about his personnel management skills other than to
say that, you know, he works his ass off and
people really enjoy being around him. So Calgary likes to
hire from within, and I think it's really good to
(24:17):
do that in any organization because it shows you've got
some upward mobility there. So we'll see, you know what
that means. I'm curious to hear Peter talk about in
terms of what his responsibilities will be in terms of
the day to day because obviously we're not as familiar
with the assistant GM role as you know that of
the GM. But the guy's a great communicator, and I
think so is Craig Conroy, and I think maybe that's
(24:38):
one of the reasons they had him pegged for this job,
is that relationship he's likely to have or will build
with other gms, other advisors in the league, the scouting staff,
trade possibilities Like he's a very very intelligent man, so
this could be a sneaky good move.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to see you what what impact
that changes one of the things that dropped today too
is U I believe every country listed up six players
that will be on their preliminary roster for next year's
Olympics in Milan, Slovakia named Martin Pospisil is one of
their six. So a Flame that we know right now
(25:14):
is going to the Olympics. That will be fun to watch.
And lately a lot of Calgary talk in the media
has surrounded around Rasmus Anderson and me and you peg
this for the biggest story of the summer. And I
don't think that took a genius to do, but we
did it. And yeah, it'll be interesting as various things
(25:36):
have been coming in with rumors of the Flames going
after JJ, Peterca other things with Rasmus Anderson this week
was supposedly sitting down with Flames organization laying out some
of what his expectations of a contract were, and thus
the Flames laying out with their expectations of a contract
(25:58):
look like for Rasmus Anderson. And that'll be interesting to
see how that goes the next couple of weeks as
we as we get closer and closer to the NHL draft.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
Yeah, that's a tough situation. I mean, I like to
think for the sake of the team and the commitment,
that Rasman doesn't have as much of a leg to
stand on after the season he had.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
The numbers that I've seen floated out there seem extremely high.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Well, they're extremely high, especially for a team that has
a lot of budding defenseman, a glut of them in fact.
Now I'm all for packaging one of those prospective defensemans
to another team if it means getting another high end
forward potentially and keeping Anderson if the terms and dollars
make sense. But from what we're all hearing, I don't
(26:50):
know the terms of dollars makes sense unless there's some
kind of a hometown discount that comes into play here.
But thus far, it sounds like it's going to be
a very lucrative deal, which may mean he goes elsewhere.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
What terms and the dollar value do you seem? What?
What would you look at as a as a keeper,
as keeper money? I guess.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
I don't go over seven with him, Okay, then I
think he's.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Gone, and I agree with you.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
I agree with you completely. I thought a little bit
hither name and maybe seven five, But you know, I
just I sit in I look at this and I
look at this season he had last year, and I mean,
I think Rassman Centers is a great player. I just
don't think he's a top end defenseman. And I think
if we were able to get him for seven seven five,
(27:37):
I think I could handle and live with that, because
I think he's he's good. I've had people say to me, well,
the second we let him go, that's the guy we're
looking for again, and and I have a heard I
don't argue that, but I don't know that we don't
have that in our system already.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
I don't really know. Yeah, I mean, based on this
past season, at least I know what he's capable of
because we've seen it. But I mean I think he's
as of right now, he's playing the most replaceable position
in our team, apart from you know, like maybe a
fourth line center or something you know, not as as important.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
But most replaceable impact position.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
I guess, yes, yeah, So I don't know. I'd love
to see him stay. I really think a lot of
the player. I mean, he talked about all the minuss as,
he ate the glood of defenseman, the way the fans
treated him, so he made a lot of comments that
were indicative of him potentially wanting a change of scenery
unless the team backs up the brinkstruck, and I think
that's the difference. If he was happy with his play,
happy with the media, happy with his role on the team,
(28:35):
then I think that predicates a discussion of a potential
home doown discount, which makes palpful for both sides. However,
given that he's expressed all these things and there's trepidation
about giving him too much money in term, I think
the likely answer is going to be packaged a year
by the draft or over the draft weekend.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
That's kind of what I was thinking too. But another
contract on another team got me thinking too about other
Flames players, and when Colorado resigned brock Nelson at three years,
seven point five million dollars, I started to think seven
million for Cadrey looks like a really good deal. Is
(29:15):
this a time to gain assets on that before he
gets too old or where do you feel on that?
Because you know what, I'm the first to admit I
was all get rid of Caudrey, and then last year
I realized and woke up to the impact he was
for our team. And I still think having him next
(29:36):
year he would be that impact player. I'm just not
so worried about next year. I'm just kind of worried
about the years after that.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Right, I think you have to keep him. He's been
a really good soldier for this team. He's a highlight
reel machine goal wise. I think you have to keep
humtil the deadline, and if you're in a playoff position,
more likely you keep him because you do need guys
like that and seven million. As much as it was
like wow at the time, especially after his first season,
(30:03):
it's not so bad.
Speaker 1 (30:04):
Now. Are you worried about a regression though the next year?
Was this a one off?
Speaker 2 (30:08):
This year? I don't think so, because he's he's not
over the hill, and I think that with the right
line mates, he can have another successful year. The problem
right now is he's being pressed a little bit much
into you know, top line center duty. And I don't
know how to answer that in a single summer, because
typically have to draft a player and develop him, or
(30:28):
you get lucky and acquire a player doesn't want to
be somewhere else, which is obviously quite rare, and that
guy hasn't his potentially yet. So I don't have any
concerns about him aging out. Maybe I should, you know,
because it happens to I mean, you know, that's the
old saying for all the time is undefeated. But I
think he's a really important piece for this team to
(30:49):
take the next step, and if it turns out to
be otherwise, then he trade him for maybe a little
less value and get today. But that doesn't hurt the
direction of the team. I don't think trading Cadre today
is going to expedite anything, if any could be more hurtful, and.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
I would agree with that because it's not like we
have a top line center just sitting in the wings
waiting right so where we're haven't we have serious center issues,
which I do feel like we'll talk about a minute here,
will be addressed at the draft. But yes, if they're
drafted this year, they're not I mean front first and
center is not. There're three four years away still, right, Yeah,
(31:22):
that's the timetable. I would look at you draft a
first line center that steps in and and handles that
position at the National Hockey League level. I mean that's
that's a tough ask.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Well, look at all the best teams in the league.
I mean Crosby McKinnon McDavid. But are even though we're
not sques sure what his ceiling is yet, I mean,
even Mark Stifley Winnipeg, like you have to have that
top end center to be a competitive hockey team Florida
with Barkoff and you know, say move with Sam Bennett
(31:56):
as well. I just yeah, I don't know. I just
people may want to capitalize on his trade value right now,
and I understand that, especially with now like you mentioned
the Nelson contract, which is a great point. Any number
of teams could take that on. But I really don't
feel the timing is right. And I think the player,
because he committed to Calgary and it has been such
(32:16):
such a positive attitude by all accounts, he deserves a
chance to win here.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
Yeah, I think it's fair. I mean, he's yeah, I
love I loved his play last year.
Speaker 3 (32:27):
Yeah too.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
We have three penning UFAs and Dan Vladar, Joel Handley
and Kevin Rooney. We're weeks away in here from July one,
and it looks like they're heading two free agency. Is
there any one of those three, or more than one
of those three, that you'd put a strong pitch two
to keep before July one Larn't.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
I still don't think that that's going to happen. But
because of how well he played, because of his familiarity
of the team, how well he worked in tandem with Wolf,
I would much rather do that. I don't think the
team feels comfortable turning to Devin Cooley because if his
injuries this year. I'm over the Rooney experiment. And this
is the thing, and I was talking at Revenue Feld
about this today a little bit on X. Kevin Rudy
had a really good second half, but he's a year older.
(33:11):
Another summer is passed, and guys like that because I
don't want to say they're a diamond dozen because that's
not entirely fair to the player.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
You're not.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
It's not going to get better, and more likely it's
going to get worse. So I think you need to
move on that. And kind of the same goes for
Joel Hanley. Hanley is going to get paid probably more
than these work to go to another team, which good
for him. He already had a great season. But if
Asmus Anderson is conceivably replaceable to some extent or another,
Joel Hanley is absolutely replaceable.
Speaker 1 (33:36):
Yeah, I would agree.
Speaker 2 (33:39):
Yeah, So one of the guys that's that did Speaking
of contracts, did just resign we need to talk about
two is Adam Kapka? So yes, two year deal. What
are your thoughts on that two year deal?
Speaker 1 (33:49):
One point two five? It's non way waiver eligible. It's
a one way deal, which tells us a lot and
will probably pen his name in. Is a right wing
on the fourth line for the opening of the season
or otherwise, I would be surprised I thought that. I mean,
I think the term is perfect, and I think the
(34:11):
dollar amount is perfect.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
Yep, I think so too, and I think.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
Perfect for both sides.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
Yeah, and you know, I could see him potentially working
his way onto the third line. He showed some pretty
good hands for such a big guy, a really good
four checker of course with that size, and a decent
skater for a guy that size. So I don't think
we know what his ceiling is yet. It looked like
fringe NHL or tweeer. That looks potential fourth line mainstay
and maybe a third line shutdown guy. I mean, hard
(34:41):
to say at this point net front presence of the
power play here and there. Maybe like he's got a
lot of interesting tools. So it's a not a real sexy,
big news signing, but a really important one for the team.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
Yep, I would agree. We touched on the draft. We're
we a little over a week and a half away
from that draft, and Calgary picks. How many times do
we pick in the draft? Here, I got it right
in front of me. We pick one, two, three, four, five, six,
seven times in the draft. We do not have a
fourth rounder, but have two first rounders, an eighteenth overall
(35:18):
and a thirty thirty or thirty one, depending on thirty
one or thirty two depending on how this Stanley Cup
Finals go. I think we are all in agreement, and
I believe we both are. That center is what is
going to be targeted, and I don't know that they
(35:38):
don't draft five of the seven is center since that
sound crazy.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
No, depending on who's available, I mean, you always take
the best player. But yeah, there's a major need for
centers to the minor league level and the NHL for
the Flames. So now I also could see them packaging
a couple of those picks and maybe Anderson to try
and move up if they're able to do so. That
(36:04):
changes discussion a bit more, which is why I'm hesitant
to get into any perspective talk of who they might draft.
Speaker 1 (36:09):
Okay, so I want to and that that's one of
my things I have on my notes here. I saw
a lot of talk on social media the last couple
of weeks about the importance of the Flames moving up,
and I in theory, sounds fine, but in a draft
that is not really super center, top end heavy.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
It's not a top end draft at all. It's not
as what I'm.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
Saying, like from what everybody's been saying and the guys
who know a hell of a lot more than me,
because I'm the first one to admit I'm not a big,
huge prospect guy. Like I'm sitting here going, I mean,
we're not gonna surely not going to be guaranteed as
a top end center even if we move up into
the top five.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
No, this is I mean, yeah, there's no such thing
as a sure thing in the draft. It's actually speaking
of Alex Dagg was actually at the Heroes weekend as well,
which is pretty cool. Yeah, it was really good. And
then you could even mention like the you know, Patrick
Stephen is another name like you just there's so little certainty,
especially in a draft that's not deep.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
I don't to me, I to me, I would I
feel like the assets for Rasmussen could be so much
better used on trying.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
Just combined Rasmussen Anderson, Like, yeah, that gets you, right?
They could be better better?
Speaker 1 (37:29):
Could they not be better served?
Speaker 2 (37:30):
Though?
Speaker 1 (37:31):
I mean then then going up yeah, and taking a
flyer on it, like and I'm not saying like a
Mesa or Haggins isn't a guy that's gonna be an
impact player for this team or a Roger McQueen. I
think he'd be great, But I just I mean, I
get I get Larry. I get Larry.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
Yeah, and I do too. And I mentioned I had
a conversation. I think we'll seeing Red Central on uh
on exit withut that too. I don't think this is
the draft that you look to move up in unless
it makes a ton of sense. I think you're much
more likely to package one of those picks and Anderson potentially,
or if we know one of your prospects to another
team for somebody that they may be given up on
(38:13):
or somebody they field could use the change of scenery.
I think moving up just in terms of draft capital
in this draft doesn't make a whole lot of sense
because the depth just isn't there. Next year it would
make sense. Yes, everything we're seeing at this point, but
right now you're better off going to the trade market
outside of the draft.
Speaker 1 (38:27):
I feel, I think, I come, I We're definitely on
the same page on this one. We're definitely on the
same page.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
But the funny thing is, though, I mean, like I remember,
like how shocking the Submann Weber trade was, Like there's
always something that can come on a left field and
thin like, how the hell did they make that happen?
But sometimes despite the fact it doesn't seem like it,
there are people in professional sports who keep things quiet.
Hey you know what, I think it would be beneficial
for you to go somewhere else, or hey, you know what,
I think we can get this guy out of this city.
(38:54):
And that's why all these scouts and all these people like,
you know, all these gms, like they have all these conversations,
so something really cool could happen, and that's what makes
us fun. The team, the Flames are very much on
the upswinger right now, mostly because the merchants are dust
a Wolf and I think, you know, one of the
next regular episodes we do could be one of the
most fascinating ones we've done a long time in terms
of what we have to talk about.
Speaker 1 (39:15):
And it's like, you know, I hate to say this,
but it's like maybe last year fitted into this scattery too,
but like this is one of the first years, like
going into the draft, that I felt like we had
some prospects already in our pool and we weren't like
starting fresh. I always felt like when we went to
the draft, it's like, oh, I had to build a
prospect pool. But when we have some guys that are
sitting in and after listening to GM Brad Pascal talk
(39:37):
about like Ettie Moran is gonna probably be with the
hl Wranglers next year, same things with Basha and Gridden.
So I mean, we're got guys that are that are
taking that next step next year and those are guys
that I mean that will hopefully be progressing even further
and we'll see how they do it camp this year, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
Yeah, And that's just it. I mean, we've we'vet been
talked on this show and it's well known and hockey
circles alone, the Flames and we we've traditionally drafted extremely poorly.
N Yeah, for the amount in the early two thousands
were atrocious as well. I remember being excited that like
a guy like Chuck Kobas who turned out to a
(40:18):
pretty good NHL with a few twenty goal seasons to
his name, right, because we were just so bad, Like
I remember, Oh God, these names are going through my head.
I can't even It's like to go by my head
so quickly. I have to pull up and grabbling right.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
Leland, Irving, Leland Irving.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
Brent Krahn. It's as far as goaltenders go. Matt Matt
Pelich as a defenseman, Andreterra Tucin, I remember him, look, yeah, Danica,
Chuck Yeah, and actually he if I don't know where
you'd find it now, but he did. In the Hockey
News years ago. He wrote a really compelling piece about
his draft status and star power and how it all
(40:57):
just evaporated, and they it was pretty cool. Rico Fata, Yeah,
I just yeah, one of the fastest guys are put
on a pair of skates. Anyway, We're gonna get totally
side tracked with this, but point being, yeah, we've never
drafted well, and now that we have been, we have
really interesting pieces at just about every position, all the
centers certainly lacking a bit. It's it's pretty fun. We're
(41:19):
not used to this. We never get nice things.
Speaker 3 (41:20):
We're Flames.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
So the Flames do pick twice in the first round.
We'll see if anything changes there. So, yeah, it is
hard to and I agree with you. I don't want
to dig deep into into prospects for two reasons. It's
it's hard to speculate where we're even going to pick
depending on what happens, And with a draft that's kind
of all over the board, it's really hard to project
who's going to be in your in your category. I
think we have a little bit of an idea now,
but we'll see how that first round plays out and
(41:44):
the heat into rounds two through seven on the Saturday.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
It is going to be very, very interesting, and I
have no doubt between now and then we'll have lots
more to talk about. Let's as the Flames go.
Speaker 1 (41:58):
NHL Playoffs. We're down to two games remaining as we
sit and record on a Monday evening here, Florida leads.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
This essentially potentially minally do one What do you.
Speaker 1 (42:10):
Mean, Yeah, Yeah, I don't want to. Yeah, it's been
an interesting series. Edmonton wins the first one, then Florida
rattles off too with a convincing Game three, six to
one win. That was I tell you what, that was
the night I almost I almost lost it. I was
so like, what is going on with this Oithers team
(42:34):
and the disgrace that they were for the cheap crap.
But anyways, they come back in Game four win at
five to four, and then Florida bounces back five two
in Game five and that brings us to a deciding
game Tuesday evening in Florida.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
Mhm, it's it's been a hell of a series. I
mean that six one drubbing was really really tough to
watch for a series that otherwise been pretty good. The
biggest concerns, the biggest one for sure with the Weathers
is goaltending because they don't have the clear cut number one.
And defensively, Jake Walman and Matias Caholm were atrocious in
(43:12):
the last game. And I don't like to blame individual players,
but A Marshawn had a hell of a game.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
But oh man, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
Epington star Power is really going to have to show
up in Florida to prolong this series and if they
have any chance of winning, because it's been not where
it needs to be for them to pull us off,
because Florida is just so deep at every position, like
what if. Yeah, just a fantastic team. But overall, two
thumbs up as far as Cup finals go. I've been
more invested in this one than I was one on
(43:41):
one last year too, and I feel the hockey has
been really good now again, as pere Lebron had said earlier,
as Ken Campbell had said earlier, I'm gonna say it,
and I know you're gonna agree. This is way too
late in the summer to be watching hockey. This should
have been over two weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (43:56):
But three weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
Yes, Yeah, we've said hundred times. Start September seventh and
the last week of May. I mean, come on, this
is crazy. It sure is all right, there's a lot
of flame stock.
Speaker 3 (44:10):
That was good.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
That was good, It was Yeah. I kind of started
as off in a different footbit. You asked a question and.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
I gave you an answer.
Speaker 1 (44:17):
That's what I want.
Speaker 2 (44:20):
Yeah, well we'll say what the next week brings. Yeah,
we got another regular episode coming here quite soon based
on thing we got to talk about. We've got more
special episodes coming.
Speaker 1 (44:31):
We got yeah, we got a draft episode coming on
Saturday of the twenty eighth. We got a free agency
one on July first, so we got all kinds of
things to talk about it. And of course, if something
major does happen, even if it's a short one, Kyle
and I will drop on and keep you up to date,
because that's why we like talking Flames hockey, right.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
Yeah, And actually I just remember this and I want
to throw this out there as we talk about talking
hockey and podcasting. My buddy Scott did something really cool
on that Thursday night before the Hockey Hero this weekend
really started. Matt Barnaby walked out to me at the
bar and was like, hey, it's a Scott was the
only a bit of your podcast, And I just thought
that was so cool Scott to mention, because you know,
Barnaby doesn't really have any connection with the Flames, per say,
(45:12):
but he's asked me all kinds of questions and seemed
really engaged about it. Was it was. It's kind of
cool how some of the guys who kind of approached
me about it, and you know, I gave it a
few of our t shirts and the hockey community is
a really welcoming one, as I kind of touched on earlier,
and it's just it's really fun when when people do
things like that and it kind of spread the word.
And then a guy I work with you today had
randomly spoken up and said, I just listen to your
(45:34):
latest episode was really good, and I thought he was
talking about the Elbow Group podcast that I guessed on
occasionally because we work for the same company, was actually
talking about us, which was the one on.
Speaker 1 (45:44):
What was it Jerseys?
Speaker 2 (45:46):
It was Jerseys? Yes, Yeah, it was really cool ones.
Speaker 1 (45:49):
That's some good ones lately.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
Yeah, we have, we got lots more coming.
Speaker 3 (45:53):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (45:54):
We got the draft, we got free agency. If you
can hop on over to Flames Unfiltered Dots c A
and sign up for the newsletter, you'll get the podcast
and some other Flames news and articles sent to you
every single week. And that should be out. Huh.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
That's it for now.
Speaker 1 (46:12):
So it's as we leave. A band called Booze and Tuna.
They were the first on our show. They are currently
out on the Tuna castor Old two five summer tour,
lots of shows almost every single night, these guys are
hilarious guys. And yeah, if you're in Grand Forks, North
Coasta this weekend where the World Juniors were almost years ago,
(46:37):
now five, they're playing there this weekend GM check on
on Spotify and Apple Music. They are good. You will
like it. And yeah, it was fun.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
It was.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
I'm gonna do less video games yea, or more life
together here Buddy Man.
Speaker 2 (47:04):
Not playing Harry.
Speaker 3 (47:08):
All right, We have a great week.
Speaker 2 (47:10):
And we will catch you.
