Speaker 1 (00:01):
Sorry, folks, we're back today. We talking about traumatic brain
injuries and violent criminals. So let's take a quick look
at this and what's the studies show here. It is
significantly more prevalent among violent criminals and offender populations and
in the general population, and multiple studies demonstrate and association
between TBI and increased risk of violent crime, antisocial behavior,

(00:24):
and criminal convictions, but the causality of the relationship remains debated.
Another interesting thing is TBIs were also correlated with pedophilia
about seventy percent of the time, which is pretty high.
A meta analysis which looks at multiple studies in a
large cohort study consistently show that individuals with TBI have
higher rates of violent crime and criminal convictions than those

(00:48):
who don't. TBI is highly prevalent among violent offenders, with
studies reporting up fifty five to seventy five percent and
offender samples compared to much lower rates in the general population.
TBI is also associated with increase in pulsivity, aggression, substance
use disorders, and psychopathic traits. Aggression and impulsivity are located

(01:08):
in that pre funnel cortex area. And remember, honestly, a
lot of these criminal behaviors are not one cause. It's
usually going to be multifactorial, so it's probably a recipe
of issues. Now, there are some longitudinal studies using sibling
and twin controls to suggest that much of the association
between TBI and criminality maybe explained actually by genetic factors,

(01:31):
which really only is another piece of the puzzle. So
it isn't like it's separate, it's just another part of it.
So it could be tbi's with genetic predispositions and other
issues going on with abuse or certain things of that nature.
That's it for now.
