Speaker 1 (00:01):
So they're going to be looking at the CSI effect.
You probably heard it, maybe you're a fan of the
CSI show. It's a term used to describe how popular
crimes shows such as CSI have influenced jurors, lawyers, and
even criminals. Since early two thousands, researchers and legal professionals
have noticed that jurors often expect corkroom evidence to resemble
what they see on TV. High tech forensic tools DNA

(00:25):
results within hours an airtight scientific proof. These shows, of
course increase public fascination with forensics, but they also create
unrealistic standards. In practice, real investigations rarely unfold so cleanly,
and this is also pushed by social media, who expects
everybody to get arrested, immediately, convicted, and sentenced, all within

(00:45):
twenty four hours, or even find somebody within twenty four hours,
like the assassin of Charlie Kirk. DNA testing can take
weeks from months. Crime scenes are often contaminated. Many cases
rely on witnesses, circumstantial evidence, or confessions rather than dazzling
forensic breakthroughs. Jurors shaped by the CSI effect may view
cases without such evidence as weak. Prosecutors are reported losing

(01:08):
trials because juries demanded DNA when none were necessary or
even feasible. Conversely, defense attorneys sometimes argue that forensic evidence
is unreliable, highlighting errors and real labs. The impact extends
beyond the courtroom. Though criminals have been known to clean
up crime scenes more carefully inspired by TV depictions, police
departments also face pressure to acquire expensive forensic equipment, even

(01:31):
when budgets or caseloads don't justify it. Meanwhile, public trust
in forensic science has grown, even though methods like hair
analysis have been widely discredited. Ultimately, the CSI effect reflects
the power of media to shape reality. When entertainment blurs
with fact, the pursuit of justice risks being distorted.
