In this episode, I tell the story of meeting Martin Garrix at the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix! Martin Garrix is one of my favourite artists, and I did not expect to meet him like this.

(00:00):
Welcome to the Garakada podcast. Iam Gary Cadet and it's kind of the
third revision of the podcast. Ifyou've subscribed to this feed before or you've
seen my previous body of work ofthe aforementioning garcad podcast, it's kind of
been all over. Start as atalk show, then when to like a

(00:22):
business kind of podcast for a coupleepisodes back in twenty twenty, and I've
always wanted to kind of do apodcast again, but I didn't necessarily know
what or what to talk about tillthis is where the revival or I guess
this other crack at it, crackat It a boy unscripted is fun.

(00:45):
But yeah, you've seen this holeof this episode and I'm just gonna get
right into it. So I guessthat's. Two weekends ago, I attended
the F one Canadian Grand Prix.I've been a big F one fan for
last probably three four years now,and I've never really had an opportunity to
go to a Grand Prix or GP, and the opportunity presented itself this year.

(01:07):
So for me living in Ontario ornear Toronto in Canada, the closest
Grand Prix for me is Montrell andI've never been to Montreal, so it
kind of checks off two boxes. And I've got a good friend of mine
who just moved to Montreal, soI got to go visit him for the
week and then spend the Grand Prixweekend at the track at the Gilvin of

(01:27):
the Circuit in Montreal, and itwas an incredible weekend. If we want
to talk about how to put onan event, F one does it so
so well or just the atmosphere, the energy of the crowd and everything that
you can do at the Grand Prix. So it's not I'm not going to

(01:48):
get into the race itself or anyof that. But Heineken is a big
sponsor of Formula One and what they'vedone this year is they partnered with Martin
Garrix and they do this at alot of Grand Prize where they flying DJs
or have entertainment after the race dayon the Sunday and have a fantastic show
for the crowd, the audience. And there's if the Venda diagram, I

(02:13):
would say that electronic music fans andrace fans, or motor sport fans or
even Formula one fans have this intersectin the middle and you know with the
dominants of Max Rostappin. If youare an F one fan, you'll know
that the Dutch take great pride intheir Dutch athletes, musicians, artists,

(02:36):
so it makes sense with Max's dominancethis season. So Sunday race Day,
we only had general admission tickets,so that meant that we didn't have a
physical seat. So all over theweekend or all weekend, we were just
walking around the track or walking aroundthe circuit, and it was just finding
a good spot to stand. Sowe found a couple of good spots.

(03:00):
One was along a nice straight bythe water by the casino if you're familiar
with the track, and we gota really good vantage point of the cars
going around the track with a greatview of Montreal, and it was a
really good spot. However, knowingthat Martin Garrits was playing, and I
didn't go to the Grand Prix expectingto see Martin Garrix, I flew out

(03:22):
on the Tuesday before the GP weekendand I found out on the Monday that
Martin Garrits was playing because for whateverreason, I saw someone's post maybe it
was Martin Garrett's posting his tour scheduleand it's like, oh, Montreal f
one Grand Prix. It's like whoa. So that was really exciting to find
out. And I didn't go withthe intention of seeing him, or didn't

(03:46):
buy tickets with the intention of seeinghim. That was just a lucky surprise
and boy didn't work out. Sorace comes where by the casino by the
water. We're standing and I wantto make sure that we had had a
good spot, probably trying to geta spot along the barricade or the rails
right in front front stage for Martin. I've never seen Martin Garretts before,

(04:09):
and I know that might come asa surprise for a lot of you.
As you know, I've seen SusMafia a few times or a couple of
times, arm and Van Beer anda handful of times. And yeah,
this elusive Dutch artist that I identifywith a lot, and he's always been
one of my favorites. I've neverseen him, It's just never kind of

(04:29):
happened the festivals they went to,he's never been on the lineup. But
this just worked out perfectly. Sowe're at the front of the stage.
We left the track I would sayaround lap forty fifty, just to make
sure, we got a really goodspot. So we're in this Heineken beer
garden. It's a huge, massivearea along the circuit or inside the circuit,

(04:49):
i should say, and there's abig stage and then another side patio
area where there's chairs set up beachumbrella is kind of like a VIP if
you into like a day club, and they have the race on these screens,
so it's not like we're missing therace. We just watched it on
the screen, which was really nice, as if you've been to a GP,

(05:12):
you don't really know what's going onif you don't have a screen in
front of you along the track,So for something like George Russell's hitting the
wall, we missed that, sowatching on the screen is kind of better.
So we got to the stage andit's this big led screen, two
led panels on the side, andHeineken F one Grand Prix all over,

(05:33):
very branded Heineken. So we kindof situate ourselves, put my coat on
the rail as it was a veryrainy weekend, and I start seeing Martin
Garrix's team, so just looking attheir lanyards and the passes, I kind
of see Martin Garrix's logo with theplus sign in the X, kind of
playing off that Amstroam branding with thethree crosses or the three xes. And

(05:59):
then I kind of looked down therail and I see him come out.
I'm like, hey, look tomy friend Camillo and he comes out and
an hour before a show and hestarts signing autographs, taking photos with fans.
I kind of showed up early, and you know, it's it's some
with an artist like that, youdon't really expect that, or I,

(06:19):
at least I don't expect that.He just finished up four shows at Brooklyn's
Mirage and it's incredible venue. Sowe did four i think sold out shows
in Brooklyn. Flew in on theSunday, and yeah, he came out
early and greeted fans and then wewere able to take a photo together,

(06:39):
which was really really cool. SoI saw him coming along and he took
so much time with kind of eachperson, making sure everyone kind of got
to have an experience with him.And then it got to me and we
took a selfie or a photo that'son my Instagram, so if we want
to check that out at Arcade onInstagram. And it was really cool.
He was just such a it didn'tlook like he was bothered by meeting fans.

(07:02):
He just looks like he was genuinelyexcited to meet fans, and it
was kind of just refreshing to seeas a lot of artists are kind of
elusive, if you want to compareto like a Swish house mafia. I
don't think I've ever seen them dothat personally or at one of their shows,
so it's kind of nice to getthat contrast. And it's not really

(07:23):
a Martin Garrick show. It's aF one event where Martin Garrix's is playing,
so it's a little different in thatregard. So we take a photo
and I have the big, bigsmile because I had a feeling that there
could be an opportunity to meet himas it's not really a Martin Garrick show.
But of course he came out andwe took a photo, and again

(07:45):
such a big smile on my face, and I was really genuinely excited to
meet him. And we didn't reallyhave a conversation per se, but just
meeting him and having the interaction wasreally really cool. He must be a
master of selfies because he took areally great photo and it's just such an
incredible highlight of the weekend. TheGrand Prix was amazing, my first Formula

(08:11):
One event, and then to topit off, meeting Martin kars So.
He plays the show. I thinkhe played for about ninety minutes, close
to two hours. However, halfwaythrough the show, all the power and
all the sound and the stage losespower, goes dark and it goes silent,

(08:31):
and it really interrupts the performance. And we were at the Heineken stage
on Saturday and the exact same thinghappened with just a local support DJ that
was playing the event, and it'ssomething that they have to figure out because,
especially with one of the world's bestDJs, you can't just have the

(08:52):
power just dropping out like that. So, yeah, that was disappointing to
it kind of broken up like that, but you could tell that Martin was
frustrated. You can tell his teamwas really frustrated and really disappointed by that.
So there's like a twenty minute break. Martin was still on stage,

(09:15):
shocked to his team. They weretalking to the promoter and everyone who was
putting on this event and trying toget this resolved because you could tell that
he really want to play and playlonger, and at that time maybe he
only played for thirty minutes, soit's not like he really even got into
Martin Garrick's tracks, as he justplayed a lot of different tracks. He

(09:39):
played a couple of Swiss Mafia tracksVICI, but he didn't get into the
Martin Garrick's progressive tracks or any trackslike that before it stopped. So instead
of just waiting backstage or something, which I don't think anyone would have an
issue with, he decided to comeout again to the front of the barricade,
to the front row in the pitand start taking photos and autographs and

(10:03):
all kinds of interactions with fans. And he just did that as a way
to just kill time and spend timewith fans, and then came around to
us again and we too got anotherphoto together, so that was really cool.
You could tell the expression is differenton his face as more of a
frustration compared to the first photo thatwe took, where it's just a genuine

(10:26):
smile, as he was just tryingto make best of a bad situation.
And it's no fault to him orhis team, I don't think, as
the power just cut out. Butyeah, so I met him twice,
and it wasn't intentionally. I didn'thave like a VIP this time around,
or have a meet and greet, and it was a really organic meeting where

(10:48):
I got to meet one of myfavorite artists. He's only I think we're
almost the same age off by afew days with both birthdays in May,
and yeah, just a really coolexperience, really cool day. He definitely
played a more I would say, mainstream set. I would say, just
to play to a more general audience. It's not Martin Garrick's show, so

(11:09):
we didn't really get that hard bass, house, basy sound that you've heard
on stamped recorders, records that you'dheart like one of those ultra sets where
it wasn't really at tracked by blindersor artists like that, where I just
wanted the I personally wanted the hardstuff, but I understand that he's playing
to more general audience and it's probablynot the crowd for that, I wouldn't

(11:33):
have been disappointed, but he definitelyplayed a more you know, general set
or a crowd, a set thatwould play well to a crowd that not
necessarily Martin Garrick's fans, but introducingthem to the markin gerricks Brown brand and
sound, so I understand that froma DJ's perspective, but it was a

(11:54):
good show. I had fun,a lot of fun. Being at the
front is always a different experience thanbeing at the back or being at a
different vantage point. So I trulywas there as a fan and just had
a lot of fun. It wasthe only day where it didn't rain,
so it was a dry day.The weather it was perfect, the sun
came out for a set, andyeah, it was a really, really

(12:15):
great time. So that is thestory of how I met Mark Gers.
This kind of podcast feed will beused to kind of tell stories like this
that don't really fit on my otherpodcast, Eating Weekly with gerack It as
it's more music and I kind ofwant to keep that feed to just the
music versions of the podcast. Icould throw this on the other feed,
but like, I just want tokeep that music, so if you're listening

(12:39):
to the podcast on repeat or justletting it play through, it won't get
interrupted by talk radio or talk podcasts. So subscribe to this podcast the gerakad
At podcasts, or follow this podcastas I will be doing more podcast episodes
on this feed of just electronic dance, music, travel, what I'm up

(13:03):
to kind of thing as like apersonal podcast kind of thing, and it's
going to be exciting to kind ofuse this as an outlet to kind of
get to tell more stories about whatI've experienced or things that kind of come
up that don't really fit on YouTube, Instagram or again eatum Weekly. So
thanks for listening. If you've hungin this long, I appreciate it.

(13:26):
And yeah, there's a brand newepisode of Eating Weekly out every Wednesday.
And go over to mind scream whereI kind of wrote this nice caption about
meeting Martin and just his contributions andmy relationship to his music and what I
guess he means to me. Iguess it gets a little deep, but
we won't go too deep on herefor the podcast. But thanks for listening,

(13:50):
and here me next time.
