Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is casey Aa.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Stuff off at exhausting amster wheel and into balance Living with.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Doctor Marissa from Miss Joy.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Doctor Marisa, also known as the Asian Oprah. Her mission
to be a beneficial presence on the planet, her purpose
to be your personal advocate, to live, lap love, learn
her life motto, don't die wondering, take back your life
with doctor Maurica Pey.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
And welcome You're do didn't take my advice, I'm not
using it. Get balanced with Doctor Marissa in the morning show. Here,
I'm casey AA, NBC News, CNBC News and NBC Sports
radio station AM ten fifty f M one O six
five and streaming everywhere I heard radio, Spotify, iTunes, tune
(00:55):
in Audible, Amazon Music, t you Live.
Speaker 5 (00:57):
Rumble pot Chaser, speaker, streaker and.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Or why so many places. I want to maximize my
splatter zone for more hope and happiness and to give
you a place to avoid the four a's in the morning,
which I guarantee you will get if you tune into
any other news outlet, because if it bleeds, it leads.
(01:22):
And the strategy is if they can get any one
of the four a's anxious, afraid, angry, or aggravated. You'll
stay tuned to that show and then you'll see advertisers,
and that's how most shows go. But this show does
not talk about the headlines at all. Why Because I
(01:42):
want you to feel amazing in the morning and not
those four a's. So I started this little project. Let's
see May first, twenty twelve. That makes today the start
of consecutive week number seven hundred and eight. Here I've
on my YouTube TV show platform, which now is over
(02:05):
four point two million impressions. I'm very grateful for that,
especially since people said, if you're not going to talk
about politics or headlines or what's going on, you won't
last a year. And I'm so glad they were wrong
now that one thousand, five hundred and twenty two podcast
shows later. Yes, I was doing podcasts before they started
(02:28):
calling them podcasts. I'm still here and I'm still happy
to be here. And it is Mondy Monday, so that
means it's hashtag mental health Monday's matters today, and we
will be talking about different things that are going to
(02:49):
help your mental health without taking something for it that
has side effects and or taking something that he's just
gonna numb and flatline your ability to feel happy eighty
eight percent of the time. Yeah, I am doctor Rissa.
(03:10):
I am known as the Asian Oprah. I was introduced
to Oprah by my big brother, Michael Bernard Beck with
you are tuned into a show about hope and happiness,
and every show I actually start with breakfast. No, I'm
not having uber eats get to you, sorry, but I
(03:31):
am going to give you an introduction or continue for
those of you who are coming in. I see the
eyeballs rolling in that join me every weekday morning at
nine am Pacific time, right after the NBC News at
the top of the hour with my CACAA channel. Then
we take a bite of my gratitude sandwich. Top of
(03:53):
the button. Things that we're looking outside of ourselves. What
are you grateful for bottom of the butt? Because I
like it. Never mind that it was a Friday convent,
but bottom of the bun is what am I grateful
for outside of myself? So? Oh sorry, that's it is Monday.
(04:14):
Let me uh, let me get another coffee left? Yes,
hold on, mm mm mmmmm, I'm one with my coffee.
Bottom of the bun is things that you're grateful for
inside of yourself? What are you appreciating about who you are,
So let's get started. Top of the button, I'm grateful
(04:36):
for my fabulous coffee first thing in the morning. There's
something about that first cup, that that good taste, that
that first uh swallow, of that first being one with
your whatever reverage you're having. I'm also grateful that I
had such a fun time yesterday. I went to uh Laylah.
(04:59):
She is RLC Talent Incorporated. She's been a guest on
this show. She puts on amazing events. This time I
did not have to judge the models, and the fashion
show was kind of nice, just being a VIP guest
and seeing all the fabulous fashion that goes by, including
my fashion designer I adopted. Normally, people think I'm a
(05:24):
fashion designer myself, which is a nice compliment, but it
is wonderful when I get two support someone who is
been nominated. Her name is Beyond a Story and she
(05:44):
is one of the finalists of the Elton John Aids Foundation,
So I'm really grateful for her. She has made it
into the finals. You can find the link in my
bio I'm looking for right now. She's the finalist in
the Let's see if we can get this where here
(06:09):
we go where we can vote for her. So she's
currently second in the quest. She's representing California. Yeah, she
made it to that amount. So I'm going to vote
right now so you can see how easy it is.
We want to get her into the finalist Final Final,
and that way she can. She's donating, of course, the
(06:36):
her the proceeds and just giving her a little more love.
The reason why I support her in particular as to
other fashion designers. All of her work is good for
the planet, recycled material, and she's a lovely person. And
(07:00):
I'm doing a book siting with her fashion at David
Levine's studios in Beverly Hills, So Hollywood, Beverly Hills. So
put December eighteenth down on your calendar. It's a Thursday night.
I'll be doing it taking my eight Ways to Happiness
from wherever you are. So that's what I would like
(07:21):
you to do with me on December eighteenth. So I
am grateful for that amazing event yesterday. It was nice
getting a lot of love from people who recognized me
for the show and all the positivity, which is really great.
I'm grateful that my daughters are coming today they're driving
(07:46):
down from San Francisco for Thanksgiving week. I'm just so happy.
I have two beautiful inside and out girls, Chloe twenty
eight Sarah Away twenty six, and they are my heart
and they're coming down. So that's something to be grateful for.
And I love this season. If you're a bahumbug, keep
(08:12):
tuning in. Hopefully a week rubbing off on you might
get you into the season. Because it hurts my heart
when I hear people say I hate the holidays, this
season of gratitude and joy. I can understand whether it's
loss or difficult family or painful memories, all of those.
(08:36):
I'm not taking those away from you. But hopefully as
you practice this exercise as well, you'll know that there's
way more that is good in life than not. So
that's why we do the gratitude sandwich. One more thing,
I'm grateful for plumbing. We have toilets, showers, things that
(09:00):
not everybody has. Apparently we're in the top eight percent
of the world if you have a roof over your head,
food in the fridge, money in your wallet, plumbing, trash
disposal removal. We have a lot of creature comforts in
this country, so we got a lot to be grateful for,
(09:21):
even at that level. So hopefully not saying it to
shame you at all, but I do think that we
are a little bit lazy in our focus. Sometimes we
tend to get distracted by people, places, and things that
we don't like instead of training our minds and our attention.
(09:46):
That's what I do every morning on the show is
for you to take your mind off of those things,
take your eyes off of those things and people in
places that irritate you and aggravate you. Like the news,
and turn it to places that make you smile, whether
it's you know, funny shows or funny videos. You know
(10:14):
this show. I've got plenty of podcasts for you to
review and watch over again in a red Carpet playlist
with my interviews with Halle Berry and John Travolta, fun
Quincy Jones. I mean, just so much, and that's that's
your choice. Nobody's putting a gun to your head. Two
(10:39):
do this which is ms meaningless scrolling. Yeah, that is
up to you, boo. So hopefully there's so much that
you are now sort of trained to look outside of
yourself to be grateful for. And then we go to
the bottom of the bun, which is what do you
like about yourself? This is a weight training for what
(11:04):
I believe to be the foundation of good mental health,
self care, self love, self soothing. All of those things
are tantamount to being able to say I'm in good
mental health. And so a lot of us were brought
up don't toot your own horn? Who do you think
(11:28):
you are? Well meaning parents that want you to be humble,
but sometimes they're more mean than well. So this is
an exercise for you to think about what you like
about yourself. And I want you to do this not now, well,
we'll do it now, but I want you to really
remember to do it before you go to bed, because
(11:50):
a lot of us have a habit, and I was
guilty of it too. We go to bed, and then
we bring our ms with yes, and we are clicking
on things usually that make you the four a's angry, aggravated, afraid,
or anxious. And then we wonder why we can't go
(12:12):
to sleep, why it's hard to fall asleep, and or
we put our phones away. But then that critical mind
comes in, Oh, you didn't finish that, you should have
said that, you shouldn't have said that, you should have
done this, You shouldn't have done that. You can't fall
asleep with a lot of should sognya. And then on
(12:33):
top of that, you might be angry at someone. How
dare they? I can't believe that they And in the past,
I would wake up and sit up and write, you know,
eighty renditions of a letter to see if I couldn't
get them to think better of me, or to understand
(12:57):
where I was coming from and how I was right
and they were wrong. And then I wondered why I
was exhausted and irritable and discontent in the morning because
I didn't get enough sleep. So that's what we do
before we go to bed. At the bottom of the
bun What do I like about myself? And if you're
really hard on yourself, if you're your own worst critic,
(13:19):
if you are harder on yourself than anybody else, if
you have ninety nine compliments and one insult, and that's
where your mind goes to. This is particularly important for
you because you have the disease of perfectionism, and for
that you will never be happy. Sorry a little bit.
(13:45):
I don't want to say judge or worst case scenario
or doomsday, but perfectionism that we think is good to
work eighty hours a week and get a lot done
and be really good at what you're doing, and being
hard a hard boss work with. Because you're a perfectionist.
You want everything that is unhappiness making guaranteed, because you'll
(14:07):
be saying I'll be happy when for your entire life,
and when will never come. So this training weight training
is particularly important if you have the dis ease with
life called perfectionism. I'm a recovering perfectionist myself, so I
forced myself to actually cut myself some slack and find
(14:30):
good things to highlight about myself. So I'll give you
an example. I appreciate my ability to dance. I'm the
hashtag dancing queen. It's funny. I sent some clips to
my best friend Amrie yesterday and she showed it to
(14:53):
a friend of hers who said, she's so shy. And
you know, starcasm is another service that people offer, especially me,
and it is true. I am really good at dancing
as if no one is watching, and usually everyone's watching.
(15:15):
So I appreciate my ability to really not care if
I feel like dancing. I'm gonna dance if I feel
like laughing at myself or at a joke that nobody
else is laughing about, I will do so. And that
is such a freedom to really give a flying fork
through a rolling donut most of the time eighty eight
(15:36):
percent of the time about how I am looking ridiculous
or not to others. And I really appreciate my ability
to do that. Unfortunately, my children are not so thrilled
about that ability, but oh well, they live in San
Francisco most of the time now, so I'll just have
(15:56):
to you know, what was that called reel it in
a bit while they're here this week? All right? So
that actually was your Happy eighty eight tip. Today, I'll
be peppering happy eighty eight tips between three great public
(16:17):
service amount announcement slash education today because one of the
best ways to up your mental health is to learn
ways in which to be more acting on your own behalf.
That's the Happy eighty eight tool today as I bring
(16:37):
you three great interviews that I pre recorded because of
the time zone differences and things like that. But that's
what we're going to do today, so I hope you
enjoy them, because all of them are. We're going to
start with a wonderful interview with a children's book that
(16:59):
I would like you too consider. And it's an astronaut
who is going to bring you this fabulous story. So
don't go away. We'll be right back in two and
two and then you're gonna hear from this fabulous duo,
(17:21):
best selling author and an astronaut to bring you a
very special book. Don't go away, We'll be right back.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Take back your life with Doctor Maurice.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
And welcome back you My advice, I'm not using it,
Get balanced with Doctor Marissa in the morning show here
on k c AA. The station leaves no listener behind
home to the Asian OPRAH number.
Speaker 5 (17:54):
One talking in the ie thank you very much.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
As streaming everywhere, iHeartRadio, Spotify and of course my YouTube
TV channel the Houses all one thy five hundred plus shows,
but who's counting? And today is a special day. I
have some special guests in studio talking about.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
Something that maybe we don't.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
Always talk about out loud, but certainly affects our happiness.
So when we are not feeling well or our loved
ones are not feeling well, sometimes it's not easy to
find the right words. And even more for children joining
me today, our best selling author Sherry Fink and astronaut
(18:37):
Kelly Girardi. They are from the Ryan Seacrest Foundation Studios
at the AFLAC Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in Atlanta, Georgia,
to discuss Beyond Words, a new book created to help
children better understand empathy and support others. Please welcome to
(18:59):
my studio, Sherry and Kelly. Uh oh, I wanted to
make sure you got the applause. Welcome Sherry and Kelly.
Speaker 6 (19:18):
So it's a pleasure to be here.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
Absolutely, Sherrie, what is the motivation for this new book
and how do you see it helping children?
Speaker 6 (19:31):
Well? Beyond Words, it's really an extension of Affle's heartfelt
mission to help kids who've been diagnosed with cancer and
blood disorders. And this book fills that empathy gap because
we've all had friends or family members who've gone through
a challenging time and we didn't know the right thing
to say, and that's even harder for kids. So this
(19:54):
book helps them understand that it's not always what you
say that matters, but it's you do that makes you
a good friend.
Speaker 4 (20:03):
That's beautiful. I love the illustrations that I just saw
as well, Absolutely gorgeous. Let's go to Can you tell
us a little bit about the story and how it
relates to empathy and kindness?
Speaker 6 (20:20):
Yes, Well, Buddy the Bear is very excited that his
friend Bunny is coming home from the hospital, but he's
nervous because, like most of us, he doesn't know exactly
what to say to make her feel better. So he
blasts off into space in his imagination and he visits
different planets where he meets new friends who help him
(20:41):
express love and friendship in ways beyond words.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
Beautiful, Kelly, you're my first astronaut on the show Welcome
And this book takes place in space, which you've been
which explains a little bit about why you are part
of the book. What role have you played in this
great book?
Speaker 7 (21:06):
Yeah, this was really.
Speaker 8 (21:07):
A wonderful fit and I was so excited to be involved.
Athlack invited and need to record the audio version of
this book as well as contribute the forward. And I
thought space was such a perfect vehicle for the message.
Chary wrote this heartfelt story and about confronting the unknown
and the unfamiliar so bravely, and so I think space
was really the perfect backdrop for that message. And I
(21:29):
have an eight year old's daughter at home as well,
and I just knew from the moment that I read
the book that she would love it and benefit from
the message, as I think with readers of all ages.
With this reminder that you don't always have to have
the perfect words in order to show up for the
people that you love and care about.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
That's a great message. And eight it's a lucky number
in Chinese, just so you can tell your daughter it's
a homophone for good fortune. I know you thought I
was Swedish, but a little bit of Chinese trivia there.
So can you tell us more about the commitment to
helping children with cancer and blood disorders?
Speaker 6 (22:08):
Absolutely, you know, most people don't realize that sixteen thousand
children each year are diagnosed with cancer in the US,
and that doesn't include the folks who are diagnosed with
blood disorders and sickle cell disease. This is a huge
number of families that need a lot of support on
multiple levels, including medical, emotional, and financial.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
It's why this impact is so incredible. From AFLAC. This
is part of a really long standing commitment. Over the
last thirty years, they've donated nearly two hundred million dollars
towards this cause, which is just an incredible amount, and
the book is really an extension of that commitment because
one hundred percent of the net proceeds from Beyond Words
(22:49):
will go to support treatment and research for children that
are navigating cancer and blood disorders. So know that when
you do buy this book, you're not just getting this
beautiful story, but you're also able to make a real
impact for real families in a real way.
Speaker 4 (23:04):
How beautiful is that. And for the work that both
of you are doing through this book and for AFLAC,
I'm giving you Doctor Maris's Beneficial Presence on the Planet Award.
I don't give it to all my guests, but certainly
I love to highlight and support these efforts to take
(23:26):
some darkness in the world and shed some light on
it in such a beautiful and colorful way. And especially
since my father passed from a blood cancer lymphoma, So
this is hitting me right in the heart in a
(23:46):
good way. And tears are the disinfectant that keep our
hearts soft. So thank you very much for coming and
sharing all of this great holiday gift as well. So
where do they go to get the book? And for
more information?
Speaker 6 (24:03):
You can purchase the book at aflac dot com slash
beyond Words, where you will also find the beautiful audio
version recorded by Kelly.
Speaker 8 (24:13):
Thank you so much. But there's also a lot of
really fun content on that site too, so do check
it out. There's downloadable coloring pages as well as a
section where kids can write letters and support encouragement to
families who are navigating this right now, which we thought
was such a beautiful touch. So that's aflac dot com
slash Beyondwards.
Speaker 4 (24:33):
That is aflac dot com uh slash beyond words. Perfect gift.
You know, I'm sure someone who has a kid who's
going through this or a parent who knows someone.
Speaker 5 (24:48):
So I expect you.
Speaker 4 (24:49):
All to go and pick up that book and help
the kids beyond words. Thanks so much, Kelly and Sherry
for coming on today. It's all about balance piece and
piece out world peace through inner Piece. Thank you so much.
Have the best day ever.
Speaker 9 (25:05):
Thank you with Doctor Maurice and we're back.
Speaker 4 (25:24):
You didn't to take my advice, I'm not using a
gift balance with Doctor Moresa the Morning Show.
Speaker 5 (25:29):
And it's that time of the year.
Speaker 7 (25:31):
The holidays can really throw off our routines and normal
healthy habits leading to glucose swings and the low energy,
increased cravings, and.
Speaker 4 (25:43):
Poor sleep that can follow that. Joining us again welcome
back to the studio with simple ways to stay on track,
is registered dietitian and author Pamela Niche. I practiced this,
I'll let you do it again. She's a six time author,
(26:05):
has completed more than thirty marathons, and is a nutritional
expert with Abbott's Lingo business. She's here to share timely
tips again this year for feeling your best of season
with a little help from a new health tool. Please
welcome back to my studio. Pama Loh, Welcome back.
Speaker 10 (26:36):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
Absolutely so, it's been a year. I can't believe it's
been a year. What impact do the holidays typically have
on our health and daily routines.
Speaker 10 (26:50):
Well, I think we can all agree the holidays are
one of our favorite times a year, but it's also
a time when we start to see our healthy habits
shift a little bit. We're balancing different schedules and different ways,
eating a lot of stress, and that impacts our energy.
Because what's happening behind the scenes is it's impacting our
glucose Glucose is one of the main sources of fuel
(27:10):
in our body, and the way glucose behaves impacts how
we feel. So whether that's short term like mood, energy, hunger,
or in the longer term like our risk for diseases
and different conditions, glucose is where it's at. So better
understanding how our glucose is behaving and knowing what changes
to make can help us feel better. And that's where
(27:31):
tools come in. Tools like continuous glucose monitors like Lingo
by Abbot, which is this small biosensor I have on
the back of my arm, worn for fourteen days, and
it gives minute by minute data on what glucose is doing,
so that you better understand how your habits are impacting
your glucose and then how you're feeling so you know
what's working for you or what to change.
Speaker 4 (27:52):
Awesome, Now give us some realistic ways people can feel
better during such a busy season.
Speaker 10 (28:01):
There's no need to overhaul or skip your familiar favorites.
It can be as simple as giving your carbohydrates some
company and changing your food order. So in front of me,
I've got some options like more vegetables, starting your meal
with a salad, adding in some healthy fats and more
protein ch your meal. So we've added in some silvered
almonds to our green beans. We've added in some Greek
(28:24):
yogurt from more protein to our make ahead mashed potatoes.
And because we made these ahead, the starch is a
resistance starch, it's more fiber, so it slows down digestion
and therefore that glucose flux is a little bit steadier
and you feel better.
Speaker 4 (28:40):
Wow, those pictures are distracting me from this script.
Speaker 5 (28:44):
It looks so good.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
Are there simple ways to make holiday meals a little
more glucose friendly?
Speaker 10 (28:53):
Yes, So, whether it's simple swaps, like instead of starting
your meal with bread, starting it with a saladalid or
adding in more protein to some of your favorite dishes,
it's just simple, simple changes over time. And then with lingo,
you can take some of the guesswork out of what's
working because you're going to see minute by minute the
habits that work for you. Because everyone's glucose is really unique,
(29:16):
so it's kind of checking in with your own data
minute by minute to know what's what's the best habit
for you.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
All right, So for people who want to be more
in tune with their health this time of year. Pamela
Nissovich bead, Did I get it right this time?
Speaker 6 (29:33):
You did?
Speaker 5 (29:34):
Go? What kind of support is out there?
Speaker 10 (29:39):
Well Lingo by Avid is an over the counter continuous
glucose monitor, so you don't need a prescription, and it's
designed to help you take the guesswork out of wellness.
So it's going to show your you your glucose data,
give you insights so you start to build plans and
habits that actually work for you. And it also gives
you resources like recipes, articles, videos to kind of guide
(30:01):
your journey.
Speaker 4 (30:02):
Great, and that's pretty real time, right, Like it's not.
Speaker 10 (30:07):
A yes, it is real time.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
I'm minute, yeah, like not like tomorrow, get the test
back like at the doctor, you know, delayed, right.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
I think that's an.
Speaker 4 (30:19):
Amazing uh invention or innovative way to help you manage
your own health. So do you have a favorite strategy
that really works for people?
Speaker 6 (30:32):
Yes?
Speaker 10 (30:32):
I don't like to overhaul complete nutrition practices because it's
not always sustainable.
Speaker 4 (30:37):
So it's just.
Speaker 10 (30:38):
Little steps towards progress. For me, that's prioritizing protein. Many
of us fall short on protein in the morning, So
my go to is ensure max Protein shake with forty
two grams of protein. I grab it on my way
out the door. I have it for breakfast or it
helps me bridge a busy afternoon and then moving more.
So when we move more, we send glucos to working
(30:59):
muscles and that helps keep us off.
Speaker 4 (31:01):
This glucose rollercoaster a bit.
Speaker 10 (31:03):
So adding in more movement, especially after our meal, just
ten to twenty minutes, adding a walk after that Thanksgiving
meal rather than.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
Crashing on the couch.
Speaker 10 (31:11):
Those small steps help us feel better.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Fantastic and all this great information, including maybe the recipes.
Where do we go for more resourices?
Speaker 10 (31:23):
You can find more information and our holiday eating guide
at helllingo dot com.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
Awesome, Thank you so much for coming back and go
have the best year ever. Pamela, thank you too.
Speaker 5 (31:38):
Thank you, and we're back.

Welcome to Balance Taichi Gung.
Speaker 13 (37:42):
My name is doctor Marissa pay. For the next twenty
eight minutes, we will be slow dancing with the universe
in a moving meditation that promotes inner peace, one breath
at a time. Just follow the sound of my voice
and move with me as I guide you through this
ancient wisdom through new thought practice. As a corporate psychologist,
(38:03):
I created this practice in response to my life and
those of my clients. We were professional, high achievement oriented, multitasking, control.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
Freaks, and exhausted.
Speaker 13 (38:16):
No matter how many successes, it was never enough.
Speaker 4 (38:21):
That, coupled with.
Speaker 13 (38:22):
A painful life experience, led me on a quest to
find another way to live and back to my Chinese roots.
If you practice regularly, I can promise you that it
will impact all health, vortexes, body, mind, spirit, soul. You
will be in a place of balance and inner peace.
(38:46):
The way we were created wishes it you my wardness.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
Dance with me.
Speaker 3 (38:56):
Just take back your life with doctor Mauriepe.
Speaker 4 (39:24):
And we're back. You're tuned to my advice I'm not
using a kid balance with doctor Marissa in the morning
show here on KCAA, the station that leaves no listener
behind NBC News Radio, home to the Asian Oprah number
one talking the ie Thank you very much every eight
am on Pacific Time Drive time. Back to that my
(39:50):
former slought. I'm so happy to be back with you
as you drive in, preparing you to actually enjoy being
at work. I know that's a a tall order sometimes,
especially everything else that's going on, but my you know,
my cajoling is for y'all to pay attention not to
those people at work who drive you crazy. But I'm
(40:14):
sure you have people at work that you actually enjoy
being with. I'm sure there's aspects of work that you
still enjoy, and those are the things that you can
focus on instead of complaining or being angry about the
things that you don't like. That is another Happy eighty
eight tip, because today is Mondy Mondy Mental Health Matters Mondays,
(40:39):
and yeah, I am so delighted that you're here with me.
You just heard three great interviews, you know, stocked full
with many different ways from a children's book. I'm so
I've never had anyone who came from Ryan Seacrest's foundation,
(41:03):
So that was really nice to hear about his work.
And I'll give him the beneficial presence on the planet
the word afflex sponsoring of this great book by Sherry
Fink and the astronaut Kelly. I am really really glad
to see that. See this is this is stuff you
(41:24):
don't know. I mean, you'll hear about negative things about,
you know, any kind of organization or the space program
or whatever it is. And you always have a choice.
Do you want to talk about good things that people
are doing or not so good things that people are doing.
But doctor Marissa, you say you have to focus not
(41:47):
always positive. You have to be real. You have to uh,
you know, don't don't walk around with your head in
the sand or your head in the clouds. You've got
to be, you know, in touch with reality. Well yeah,
and there's so much about reality that is good. And frankly,
my dear, I feel better when I'm looking at what
(42:11):
is working then what is not working. So that's a
personal happy eighty a tip that I hope that you
at least consider for the rest of this week.
Speaker 5 (42:21):
I mean, lord.
Speaker 4 (42:22):
Knows, this is this is the one season of the
year that we're focused on gratitude and thanksgiving, giving thanks.
If you can't find something to be grateful for this week,
I don't know what to tell you. Well, I do
know what to tell you. You know you might want
to do a little investing in a coach or someone
(42:46):
who can help you.
Speaker 5 (42:47):
Well, I'm here too.
Speaker 4 (42:49):
I'm not for everybody, but certainly, if you know that
you're not as happy as you could be, it's time
quit blaming under. The buck stops right over not there,
it faltered, their faultered, their fat buckstops right over here.
We are capable and responsible for claiming our own birthrate
to happiness. So let this be the season where you
(43:14):
make a different. It doesn't have to be as horrible
as it's been in the past. That was the past,
its history. This is the present. It can be a gift,
present gift if you choose it to be so happy.
Eighty eight tip it is mental health matters Monday. Focus
(43:37):
on what you want and not what you don't want.
So Stephanie, step it up. Sephanie, Pam Kelly, and Sherry.
All four fabulous women that I just gave you the
(43:57):
interview for. They all had good win small, big, every day,
once in a while, whatever it is to help you
help yourself. And I think that is the overall tip
that I wanted to focus on today for mental health matters,
mondays is what can you do for yourself, not what
(44:20):
other people can do for you. So this is a
common thing that we grow up with and we have
a habit of thinking that it is other people's responsibility
to make us happy. Let's munch on that for a
(44:44):
second or a minute. So I grew up, like most people,
being told by my parents do this right, or do that,
and if you don't do it, you are going to,
you know, make me unhappy, right? Or why do you
(45:06):
do this right? Why do you do that? Because if
you're doing it, you are making me unhappy. And that is,
you know, really not something that we're consciously taught. But
it does lead us as kids to think that it
(45:28):
is our job to make other people happy, and then
vice versa, it is their job to make us happy.
And that learning that, you know, unintentional understanding that you
are not responsible for your own happiness is a hard
(45:51):
habit to break. I mean, the average person wants to
make other people happy at some level. If you're at
extreme level, it's called codependency. That you can never be
happy until you make that other person happy. And unfortunately,
if you're one of the seven or let me watch
(46:15):
those words, it's not a fortunate unfortunate if you're one
of the seven out of ten of us who've had
childhood trauma, it's not an unfortunate thing if you can
change the way you look at what your trauma was
in the past. And this is such an important concept
that I covered in this book, which you get a
(46:39):
free audiobook copy today because it's Monday, called Eight Ways
to Happiness from wherever you are. And this book is
not a book as a psychologist telling you how to
be happy. It's a book that was written by someone
who had childhood trauma, not saying I'm proud of it,
(47:02):
but also not calling it unfortunate. And I love it.
I'm getting chills. So whenever there's sirens, whatever I'm saying
at that moment is the highlight. This is the moose
on the table, my Canadian version of talking about the
elephant in the room. That a lot of us will
(47:28):
spend our whole lives justifying why we are unhappy. Let's
be honest, right, I cannot have a happy life because
I wasn't given a fair shape growing up.
Speaker 14 (47:48):
I had a horrible mother, of horrible father, a horrible teacher,
a horrible priest. I had horrible whatever it is. Therefore,
I'm behind the april. I'm never going to catch up.
I didn't have an ideal.
Speaker 6 (48:04):
You know.
Speaker 4 (48:05):
I wasn't taught right. I wasn't raised right. I wasn't
loved right. I wasn't treated right. Therefore I am broken.
I need to be fixed. I need to I'll never
catch up right because it's not fair that they did
this to me. And the you know, the sad part
(48:28):
is if the majority seven out of ten is the majority,
my honorable Moniker Oprah says, it's societs eight out of ten.
She was open, and I credit her with that open
about her own upbringing and the pain and the thing
that was getting infected inside because of that damage that
(48:52):
was done to her. I had damaged me seven out
of ten of us, eight out of ten of us.
Some sech, I'll just say nine out of ten of us.
I was having a conversation the other day and they
were part of the three out of ten who had.
Speaker 15 (49:08):
A beautiful childhood and they were shocked to hear how
evalent a childhood trauma was really seven out of ten.
Speaker 4 (49:19):
And my response was, well, you know, before Oprah, my
honorable moniker, we didn't talk about you know, trauma, childhood
trauma out loud. We're not supposed to air our dirty laundry.
We're not supposed to talk about those you know, family secrets.
We're supposed to, you know, pick yourself up by your
(49:43):
bootstraps and keep going in the past. Passion can't change it,
so you know, why talk about it? And y'all know
I'm from personal experience. What you do not deal with
will come back and deal with you. My work in
executive coaching, I see that every day. You know, people
who are super successful, super achievement oriented, professional mastery to
(50:10):
the nth degree, but inside they don't have personal mastery.
They still are driven by the voice that says, yeah,
you think you're good, or they think you're good, but
you know, what have you done for me so far lately?
What have you done for me lately? Or oh, if
they knew who you really were, you know, they wouldn't
(50:31):
be so impressed, and so self sabotage, imposter syndrome, fear
of failure, fear of success. That's personal mastery. If you
don't have dominion over your critic inside, you're going to
never be happy. Have professional mastery but no personal mastery.
(50:54):
Robin Williams, Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, real unfortunate, that's unfortunate.
Examples of professional mastery. You've got fame and fortune, You've
got all the money in the world. You've got everything
that American dream says is going to make you happy.
But you're not happy. And that's the Happy eighty eight message.
(51:20):
It's not just a tip. This is the underlying ground
zero foundation work of happiness. If you want to be happy,
you have to deal with and change your bs, your
belief system that you are somehow behind, if you don't
(51:45):
have a perfect or loving, supportive parents. Most of us
didn't get that. So then what so my prescription, my
hope for everyone, if you are in that boat, if
you were in that boat with me, that you are
(52:07):
able to work with your pain, not ignore it, but
also not get stuck in it. Because that's the other side.
So one side, I said, what you don't deal with
will do with you. Well, there's another side to that
is what you can't get out of. You will drown
(52:29):
in or you'll crash your life car into the barrier
in the middle divider if you cannot see past your pain.
So this is the part for the holidays that people get. Oh,
you know, I get sad about who's not here anymore,
and I get sad about all the things the regrets
(52:50):
I have. I get sad about all the things that
I haven't done in my life and it's not fair
and blah blah blah blah blah, same old poor me lonely.
I am so lonely that kind of sing and dance,
song and dance and broken record. I wanted to stop
(53:11):
right now today on the show. If you can commit
to yourself that I don't want to live this way anymore.
I am tired of being tired. I am sick and
tired of being sick and tired. I am tired of
blaming other people because it's not going to ever change.
(53:34):
You cannot make them say sorry, and if they say sorry,
you're not gonna believe they needed anyways. Come on, let's
put that moose on the table. The work is not theirs.
They're not making you unhappy. You are choosing unhappiness if
you continue to blame in, shame, blame them, shame yourself.
(53:56):
Stop the buck stops right over here, right now, in
this moment. Take a deep breath through your nose and releasings,
shoulders offt elbows off, knees. Get that breath in your body,
that healing breath. Another breath in and releasing all the
stories in the drama. The first breath was to connect
(54:18):
your physical self with that breath of life chi eternal energy.
Second breath is to connect the mind and releasing all
the stories and the drama. Release that out. And the
third breath that is the breath of life, connecting me
(54:39):
and you with everyone, with nature, with the beauty and
the earth. That's the breath the chi that connects us all.
It's the perfect example of well being. When I take
a breath, I'd take nothing from you. When you take
a breath, you take nothing from me. That is che
(54:59):
each other energy. That is what's going to begin to
heal you when you do those three breaths. That in
it of itself is a healing three breath doctors three
doctor Murris's three breath technology. You want to just every
hour on the hour. Just take a minute. Breathe that in.
(55:23):
Release the breath, connect with your body. Re breathe in
release the stories and the drama, the mind, release those thoughts.
Three breath, connecting with the well being all around us.
Look for the good. Look for it feels good. Look
(55:43):
for your best self. You are the boss of yourself.
That's personal mastery, your boss of the critic. You're the
boss of the breath. The voice that tells you you
don't need to apologize, that you uh, that you miss
the mark, that they're not perfect, that they're to blame.
(56:04):
That nobody gets to tell you how to stop eating
the things that are giving you problems with your health.
Why what do you mean I can't eat that Krispy
Kreme dona And you're a diabetic and you know better.
Tune in last week's show, go listen to my newest series,
(56:27):
Beating Cancer with Nutrition with Mark Simon. We spent a
lot of time talking about natural ways and why we
are diabetic. So there's so much we can do to
act on our own behalf so that we can take
responsibility personal mastery, to claim our birthright to happiness. It
(56:53):
ain't over there. It ain't gonna be making someone else
change to make us happy. That's not how we get happy.
We have to take responsibility for our own happiness. Sorry,
I wish there was an easier way to get free.
You to take the pill or whatever to make yourself happy.
(57:16):
It doesn't work like that. We got to be the
boss of ourselves. You get a free audiobook today if
