the call arrived. While the officers from the unit covered
the house. Frank and I went to the manager's place
and talked to him. He identified himself as Marshall Rice.

get him out of there, That's all I care about.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Just get him out.

Wanted to get some things straightened out. Then had a
cup of coffee with him and Charlotte.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
Who Charlotte his wife?
Speaker 8 (05:17):

a flip like him.

paint and papers, yea, And Dudley's been helping me.
Speaker 8 (05:35):
Lost his job a couple of months ago.
Speaker 7 (05:37):
Since then, he's just been sitting around watching the TV
doing a liquor work. So I asked him to give
me a hand with a redecorating. Guy's already six weeks
behind his rent just goes to show. Huh, So you
try to be nice to a guy. Try to give
my hand. What happened to kick you?
Speaker 8 (05:51):
He's no good. He's no good at all. He'll find
out when he comes out.
Speaker 7 (05:54):
You'll see them.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
How long they lived here.
Speaker 8 (05:56):
It's been a couple of years.
Speaker 7 (05:57):
You need the exact date they moved in.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
No, you're not right now. He ever had any trouble
with him before this?
Speaker 8 (06:02):
He wasn't like this, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
But you have had trouble.
Speaker 7 (06:04):
Well, sure, just try to live together and not have a.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Little beef now and then?
Speaker 8 (06:08):
What were the disagreements about different things? Sounds kind of
silly when you talk about him.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
All might help us get him out of We know
what caused this?
Speaker 7 (06:14):
Well, like he likes one baseball team, I like another.
Speaker 8 (06:17):
He don't like the fish.
Speaker 7 (06:18):
I don't like to haunt things like that, lay him
out in the sun. They just dry right up, silly
little things. Anything else, Well, I guess you might as
well tell you. You'll find out anyway.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
What's that?
Speaker 8 (06:28):
Well Dudley thought there was something between Charlotte and me.
Of course there wasn't. But you just couldn't convince him.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
He was off base.
Speaker 8 (06:33):
Wasn't anything could convince him.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
He said something about that this morning today.
Speaker 8 (06:37):
Yeah, we were just sitting.
Speaker 7 (06:38):
There talking about how he ought to help me out
with a paint, and Charlotte said he should. All of
a sudden, he got this kind of wild look in
his eye, told me he knew all about me and
his wife, that I wasn't fooling anybody.
Speaker 8 (06:47):
Well, we just sat there, didn't know.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
What this thing.
Speaker 7 (06:50):
Picked up his coffee cup and flung it across the room,
smacked against the wall, Coffee all over the place, streaming
down the walls, ruined the paint.
Speaker 8 (06:57):
Told me to get out of the house and leave
Charlotte alone.
Speaker 7 (07:00):
If you ever saw me talking to her again, he'd
make me sorry I did.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
What about his family?
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Now, are they in the house.
Speaker 7 (07:05):
I'm pretty sure they ain't trom to pick the kids
and left right after I did, and some.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Walk on you know where they went.
Speaker 8 (07:11):
I can't help you there.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
She had any people of friends in the neighborhood.
Speaker 8 (07:15):
There nothing I ever heard.
Speaker 7 (07:16):
Got to sift her down National City, But I don't
think she went there. And why say that I didn't
have no grips she'd go on there. She did take
in clothes for the kids, didn't have no grips once
she left.
Speaker 8 (07:24):
I'm pretty sure she didn't go to National City, but
you don't know where.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
We will fight her.
Speaker 8 (07:28):
That's the least might have gone to a show. The
deadly calms down. How do you figure the gun to
come out?
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Well, we try to talk to well first, revoid him.
Speaker 8 (07:36):
And ain't gonna do her.
Speaker 7 (07:37):
He hasn't got any reason to left to do a
thing like this, So we've got to try. You're gonna
have to kill him.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
You just wait and see.
Speaker 7 (07:41):
That's the only way you're gonna get him out. Shoot
the house full of holes and hope he gets in
the middle.
Speaker 8 (07:44):
That's the only way. We hope you'll see something else
you ought don't know?
Speaker 4 (07:48):
Well, what's that that gun?
Speaker 8 (07:49):
He's got the twenty two rifles.
Speaker 7 (07:50):
He's got a real thing about guns, big collection rifles, pistols, automatics,
a whole bunch.
Speaker 8 (07:54):
On there, and they all work.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
We got a description of Dudley Gray and we called
it into r and I. We found that he had
no record in our files. We got in touch with
Captain Lahman and filled him in. We requested that additional
teams of men be dispatched with tear gas and clipping
the shotguns The men from the fellowing units covered the
back of the house, while Frank and I covered the front.
All of the other tenants of the court were instructed
to stay indoor eleven fourteen o them the Frank standing by.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
I went up to the porch to try and talk
to Gray.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Gray, Gray, I want to talk to you.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
I got nothing to say to you. Watch you put
the gun down. Come on out here. You'll try to
take this place. I'll kill you all, no reason for that.
I know who you are. You don't have to try
to kid me. I know you. The police officers. Gray,
we want to help you. Yeah, you don't have to lie.
You just want me to open the gates to let
you and the rest of men here. Well, you go
back and tell the chief at it all right, Come

this fort till the cavalry gets here.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
So you're division on the way right now, Great, come
on out here. We're on your side. We want to
help you. That's a lie.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Yeah, I heard what the landlord says. He can hold
out man as long as he wants. Yeah, maybe if
we can find his wife, who might be able to
come up with the answer. Right, I'll check with the
rest of the neighbors see if they can tell us anything. Yeah,
I'll go on back and try to talk to him.
Wait a minute, Take it easy, Joe. He sounds pretty sick,

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Gray? Right?
Speaker 9 (10:18):
In a couple of days, last tu time, day before yesterday.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
You should be here day after tomorrow. You're gonna pick

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Well, it didn't work it doesn't work, you'll fall off.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
Didn't work when Gray fired at me and I dropped
to the ground. While flanking the other officers returned the fire,
driving a man away from the window. Eleven forty seven am,
the additional men arrived from the office with tear gas equipment.
We distributed and we worked out a plan.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
To take Gray.
Speaker 4 (11:38):
It was decided that two men would cover.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
The right side of the house while another team covered
the back.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Frank and I would go around to the left side
and fire tear gas shells into the building until Gray
had to leave. Eleven fifty to.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
All of the officers were in position and Frank and
I started to move in to use.
Speaker 2 (11:54):

Speaker 10 (12:15):
Why he doesn't his own business. I'm just telling you
to get out.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Of my flowers.
Speaker 10 (12:19):
All the year I've been worrying over trying to coach
the block them out of them. Now you come around
here with your big feet and ruin it all.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Sorry about that, but we have to get Gray out
of that house, then do it, not stepping all over
my flowers.
Speaker 10 (12:29):
You're a cop, You're supposed to know how to handle
things like this. Look what you've done with my two
let's begonias two months. I've been working with them, just
put them out last week and now look they're all broken.
You just ought to be ashamed of yourself. Big men
like you doing anything like this to my flowers.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
That show them, ma'am. If we hurt your flowers, were sorry,
you did?
Speaker 4 (12:47):
Think you better getting sorry now?
Speaker 10 (12:48):

Speaker 3 (12:50):
Yes, ma'am, that's a direct order, Yes, ma'am.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
All right, I'll go, but you just remember you ordered
me to go.
Speaker 5 (12:58):
You're come to hear about this, young man.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
What's a number?
Speaker 2 (13:00):

Speaker 4 (13:10):
Yeah, come on, ma'am.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
We can talk right over here.

this night.
Speaker 4 (13:35):

Speaker 5 (13:39):
Fronts alright, goindow a little monker out there.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
Yeah, whenever you're ready that you bring him out, I'll
get another one. Ready, gotter hold it up here. It
comes from creating, right, Hey, hold it up, Joe, what
do you got jah?
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Just find out now Gray's wife and kids are in
there with him.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Sergeant Jack McCready was standing by in the manager's office
when Missus Gray had telephoned from the house with the
possibility that innocent people might be hit. We were unable
to fire into the home.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
M We met with Captain Woman and discussed the methods
we could used to get the women and children out
of the place.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
We worked out a plan.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
It would depend entirely on being able to talk to
missus Gray and explain what we were trying to do.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Frank and I went to the manager's place and put
in a call to the house. How about it just
studying the ring figure it'll work. I don't know. The
only way we can make it go is to talk
to the woman. Explain the set up to her.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
You get in touch with the office by the Doctor's cap.
They're sending a psychiatrist out.
Speaker 4 (14:43):
You might be able to talk to Gray.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Well hope so.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
Any no, looks like we're in trouble.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Yuh.
Speaker 4 (14:50):
She won't answer the phone.
Speaker 8 (15:01):
You are listening to Dragnet the authentic story of your
police force election.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Without being able to talk to the woman, who was
a little chance that the plan for getting her and
the children out of the house would work.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
One fourteen pm, a large crowd.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Of people had gathered on the streets in front of
the court.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Additional policeman from Metro Division had to.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Be called in the control room.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
From time to time, Dudley Gray would scream something at
the bystanders and fire into the crowd. So far, we've
been able to keep the curious citizens back far.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Enough, so that none of them would hurt, but it
was only a matter of time.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
Before our luck ran out.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Meanwhile, we were still faced with the problem of first
getting the wife and children out of the house before
we could attempt to take the man himself.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
One nine pm.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
While Frank and Sergeant Jack McCready went around to the
back of the house to ascertain the possibility of removing
the family from that side, I again attempted to talk
to Gray, Gray.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
Gray, Come on, Gray, we want to talk to you.
I thought I killed you, and and and Grey. We're
police officers. We're trying to help you. If you'll give
us a chance. You expect me to believe that's the truth.
I want to talk to you.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
Say, I'll give you something.
Speaker 9 (16:15):
What's that You better get out of head take your

Speaker 4 (16:41):
What's a lie? Why do you think of doing all this?
It is for them?
Speaker 5 (16:44):
So they get out of here?
Speaker 9 (16:46):
I want to putch the Indians warming all over the
places for them I'm doing.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
That's then I hide to buy gray hard to see
what you're trying to protect them from.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
What do you think you want to tell me that?
Speaker 9 (17:02):
Don't you think I know what's going on all the
time sitting in here looking at you people trying to
take things away from me, You'll think I know what's
going on. Huh, Well you just save your breath, save everything.
Speaker 4 (17:12):

Speaker 9 (17:22):
You can't catch me with that one again.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
You tried once before and it didn't work. Remember you

Speaker 1 (17:27):
We didn't cause you any trouble.
Speaker 4 (17:29):
I don't believe anything you'd say. I wont save your breath.
All you Indians is tricky.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
You're not full of me.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
What about all the people out there in the street?
Speaker 2 (17:37):

Speaker 4 (17:38):
You want to hurt them too?
Speaker 9 (17:40):
Be real, honest with you what you got coming up without?
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Be honest?
Speaker 2 (17:43):
All right?
Speaker 9 (17:44):
I don't much care, and I'm enough to get caught
in the middle of an Indian wars.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
They're tough luck. You've come close to shooting a couple
of them, you know.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
And tell them to go back to their homes.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
Leave the biking to the man.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Come on, Greg, let's get to get and talk things
over out here.
Speaker 4 (17:59):
What he said off?
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Then?
Speaker 1 (18:00):
Doing you get me out of the fort? And your
pride something? I'm not falling for that.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
And what are you trying to do? I don't know
what you're talking about. Grey, I'm trying that one. You're
trying to break it out of the back of the well.
It won't work. I'll take care of y'all. Don't get
out of the lot.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
How on, we're getting the gas clipping ready?
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Now you know he got his family out.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Well.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
I kept Gray busy in front of the house Frank
and Jack McCready had gone around of the rear. They
found the room where Missus Gray and the children were hiding.
By breaking a window, they'd been able to remove them
from the house. The children were taken to one of
the neighbors, and Missus Gray was waiting for me in
the manager's place outside. The members of homicide detail. We're
making preparations to get Dudley Gray.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
Out of the house.
Speaker 10 (18:49):
Thanks God, you got this out of it.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
It's all right now, miss Gray the next door, don't
worry about it.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
What are you gonna do.
Speaker 5 (18:59):
We're trying to get him to come out of the
house because I have to choot him.
Speaker 4 (19:02):
Well, that depends on how he wants it.
Speaker 10 (19:04):
He's sick, he doesn't know what he's doing.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Sure we know it, but your husband's in there taking
pot shots, and anybody who comes near only a matter
of time before somebody gets so close he can't miss.
Speaker 10 (19:13):
Some way to get him to give up. You know
the police in things like this before.
Speaker 11 (19:17):
It seems like gonna be your chance to get him
out without hurting them.
Speaker 5 (19:21):
We're trying what caused this to happen a lot of
things so well, it's Gray.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
If we know what's wrong with him.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
It might help.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
Could you give us some kind of an angle on I.
Speaker 10 (19:32):
Don't know how long it's been building, maybe a year,
maybe longer. Time to say you try to.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Take care of the family, keep it together.
Speaker 10 (19:40):
They don't see the side.
Speaker 4 (19:41):
Yes, it might be my fault.
Speaker 10 (19:43):
I guess it is just all of a sudden things
get too heavy for him to carry. He wants this job.
We couldn't play the build got so I wouldn't ask
the phone because I knew.
Speaker 4 (19:51):
It was somebody wanting their money. I try to take
it easy.
Speaker 10 (19:56):
He didn't have any way to get the pressure off.
No way at all.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I'm god, all right, go ahead.
Speaker 10 (20:03):
You shoot. The children are all right. They being taken
care of. But they having lunch. I didn't anything. They
haven't et since this morning.
Speaker 4 (20:12):
I'm sure they'll be sad that.
Speaker 10 (20:13):
This is kind of picky with her food and needs
coaxing to eat.
Speaker 4 (20:16):
They'll be almost right. I would you go on, please?
Speaker 10 (20:19):
Well, it finally broke this morning. Once it started, there
wasn't anything we could do. Marshall came over, that's the manager. Yes,
he came over to ask Dudley if he'd help with
the painting. Mentioned that it'd be a way to pay
some of the back rent. Didn't mean anything. Dudley just
took it the wrong way. What's that Marshall told him
about the rent? I said it was nice of him
to give Dudy the chance to make it up. I
(20:40):
didn't mean anything by it. Yeah, And they got up
from the table and went into the living room and
turned on the television. Didn't say a word to me,
just got up and walked out. M sat there watching
a picture, one of those cowboy things, just sat there
and watched it.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (20:52):
Kids went in and tried to talk to him, so nice,
tried to bring him out of it. He didn't even
know we were in the room, just sat there and
looked the picture.
Speaker 8 (20:59):
As your husband ever been under the care of a doctor,
You mean for his mind?
Speaker 2 (21:02):
That's right.
Speaker 10 (21:03):
No, I was afraid to ask in my shirtars, but
it just seemed that it didn't mean another bill that
was causing all the trouble anyway. I told her, I
was trying to believe that it wasn't anything serious, that
it'd go away. Yeah, better to cousin Bill.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
What.
Speaker 10 (21:22):
He sat there for a while, and he just got
up and walked to the closet, picked up the rifle
and told me and the kids to get into the
back bedroom, said that they weren't gonna take the place.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Did you know what he meant?
Speaker 8 (21:31):
Well?
Speaker 5 (21:31):
No not.
Speaker 10 (21:31):
At first. I knew there was something wrong, but I
didn't know it to.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
Be as bad as this.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
Is there anybody her husband's particularly fond of.
Speaker 10 (21:39):
We've been married for eight years, Sergeant, I guess I
could qualify.
Speaker 4 (21:41):
That's what I mean.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
Man.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
Is there anyone that he'd listened to? A friend, maybe
a minister or a priest.
Speaker 10 (21:47):
No, any friends he had or gone. They didn't understand
his moods there? There isn't anybody, all.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
Right, miss great Hut seeing her?
Speaker 8 (21:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (21:56):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
We ran out of time.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
The crag just shot a cop.
Speaker 3 (22:07):
The officer was not seriously wounded. He was removed to
Georgia Street Receiving Hospital for treatment. People in the adjoining
units were evacuated, the streets were cleared as much as possible,
and the men were in position to move in. Frank
Jack McReady and I were opposite the front door of
the house.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
From missus Gray.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
We learned that her husband had several hundred rounds of
ammunition for the rifle that he was using. In addition
to this, he had several handguns and ample shells for them.
She told us that the other guns were located in
the closet in the rear of the place. It was
decided to pour tear gas into the back windows and
try to keep Gray away from the other guns.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Frank with arms with a.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
Sawt off shotgun loaded with double arts, but McCready had
a forty five caliber machine gun. The officers were in
position and the signal was given, there go the gas gun. Yeah,
and she'd be coming out pretty quick, hope, because the
killing him.
Speaker 1 (22:58):
We'll tryst in the time to the front windows.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
Go ahead, quite all right. I saw they got out, great,
saw they got out the long time. Come on, saw
that gun out.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
He's down.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
Come on, he still got the gun.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Is he dead?
Speaker 4 (23:21):
No, you better get an ambulance.
Speaker 5 (23:22):
I'll take him him.
Speaker 11 (23:24):
Did he Dad?
Speaker 4 (23:25):
Did you kill him? No, ma'am, I didn't know what
I shouldn't see.
Speaker 8 (23:31):
He's gonna be all right, missus.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Ray got she's on the way.
Speaker 10 (23:33):
He didn't know what he was doing, that's all.
Speaker 5 (23:35):
He didn't know what he was doing.
Speaker 4 (23:37):
Yes, ma'am, he knows we love him.
Speaker 10 (23:38):
That's all it comes.
Speaker 11 (23:39):
We love him, want to take care of him.
Speaker 5 (23:41):
He didn't think anybody cares for him.
Speaker 10 (23:42):
That's what was wrong.
Speaker 9 (23:43):
He just didn't know.
Speaker 10 (23:45):
Yes, maybe wouldn't get you know, everybody wasn't getting Still.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Know, people care.
Speaker 10 (23:49):
Don't you think that's all it's wrong.
Speaker 4 (23:51):
I wouldn't know, ma'am. But he took the hard way
to find out.
Speaker 2 (24:01):
The story you've just heard is true.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
The names were changed to protect the innocent.
Speaker 11 (24:06):
On August twenty sixth, the preliminary hearing was held in
the prison ward of the County Hospital in and for
the County of Los Angeles, State of California. Dudley Peter
Gray was held to answer charges of assault with intent
to commit murder. He was examined by three psychiatrists appointed
(24:29):
by the court and found to be insane. He was
confined to the State Mental Hospital at Camarillo for treatment.
