(00:16):
Welcome to the Got Invention Show.I'm your host Brian Freed, and today
we have Zuli mata Yana. Sheis the inventor and the president of Tierra
Natural Deodorance and I know she sellssome other products as well. Welcome to
the show, Zulie. Good morningeveryone. I'm really excited to be part

(00:38):
of this show. Brand. Youknow, like the universe connected us in
a very special way, and youknow, like we went to the same
university, mat right, that's right, And I've gotten a chance to know
you over time, and you havea remarkable story. I'd love to first
start off by telling everybody who youare and where you're from and what you

(01:02):
do well. So my name isSulimtaiana. I am originally from Colombia.
I am a Latina leading change inAmerica. My story is a story of
miracles and the universe. It's allabout connection, persistence and entrepreneurship. I

(01:23):
started with my sustainable shower caps thatcalled the attention of good more in America
and were presented on TV. Andthen you know, like I you know,
and the basically I developed based onthe death of my grandma and my
aunt Ruth, who died of breastcancer. I was always you know,

(01:46):
trying and looking for a natural deoderance. So I developed my my natural deoderance.
And right now I am getting intoretail and things are getting more exciting.
Good. So let's start off, duly, what was the problem.
What exactly happened for you to say, you know what, I'm not really

(02:07):
happy with what I'm using right now, so there's got to be a better
way. So what was your momentthat you needed to change what you were
already using. So basically it's theyou know, like for women, shower
cups are a daily tool, Likewe use shower cups every day, and

(02:29):
you know my problem with things inthe bathroom. It's funny, right,
like they were not consistent for me, so also naturally the others they didn't
work for me, so hand onhand, I was having these two problems
that you know, I actually werethinking about for so many years. And

(02:51):
the easy way to go was withto develop the shower cups because that was
an easy problem to solve. Let'ssay, was the problem what was the
problem with the shower caps? Withthe shower cups, you know many I
mean, you don't new shower cups, but many women use, and the
problem was that the shower cups thatI bought, they were all small,

(03:14):
they didn't feed all my hair firstof all, Second of all, they
let water in, so every timeI used a shower cup, I was
wet. So I needed to solvethat problem because I you know, it's
it's very you know, I domy blow right, or I pay for
my blow dry, and it's alot of money and time, and it's
actually electricity consumption. And I'm alwaysvery sustainable in that sense. So I

(03:38):
said, you know, there shouldbe a better way that we useless water
by not washing our hair every day. And on the other hand, there
should be a better shower cup inthe market. So I start looking.
Everywhere I was traveling, I wasbuying the shower cups. I bought more
than fifty shower cups. And thenI started doing my research and I saw

(03:59):
l is looking for the perfect showercup online and I was like, oh,
there is a market, and Isaid, okay, I'm going to
do it. So that was theproblem with the shower cup. Yes,
let's talk about the problem with thedeorderant. So why don't you tell us
about the problem that you had withthe deorderant. Why did you want to
make a change? Yeah, Well, the problem with the deodorant was that

(04:20):
basically, you know, all thedeorderance I warned, like the natural deorderance
I was testing either didn't work ordidn't have the right ingredients, right,
So there is a lot of misunderstandingand misinformation in the market where companies are
telling you they're natural, that they'reactually putting more aluminum in the products that

(04:42):
they're selling then you know, likewhatever other products traditional deorderance offer, right.
So by knowing that, I knowright away I knew there was a
problem. First of all, didn'twork. Second of all, people are
you using the run ingredients? SoI'm like, how can people you know,

(05:04):
how can families trust companies that aretelling them this product is good for
you? They have been selling thesealuminum based or toxins or tray clothes and
paravans full of product full of toxinsproducts, And then how do I trust
these companies now? Like how youknow, like what is the change that

(05:28):
is going to happen in these companies? Are they going to ever come up
with a good deoderance or should Ido it myself? And that's a big
question that a lot of us facewhen we come up with inventions. We
find a problem and we either sayI wait for somebody else to do it,
or maybe I'll get close to thesolution, or you say, you

(05:50):
know what, I'm going to takethis on. And there are other deorderance
that are out there that are natural, So they say, but what do
you think about those, Zulie,Well, you know, there are a
lot of information, a lot ofmisinformation, like, for instance, they
so I'm not going to show youany brand, but these ones that have

(06:12):
like their solid and their rocks, these ones actually have the most amount of
aluminum of actual natural aluminum. Soif you're using any kind of rocks or
mineral salt based the oderance, theseones have more aluminum than any other the
oderance in the market. And thesecompanies claim they are natural, and they

(06:35):
are like to say, like totell you truth, Yes they are,
but they have natural aluminum. Sothat is the ingredient that you don't want
to put in your body. Right, So that's the problem. And I
have been talking to a lot ofwomen that use these crystals, that use
these stones, and they're cheap, they're sustainable because they last for a long

(06:57):
time, but they're not the rightrather to put in your body. And
okay, yeah, the other reasonthat I'm doing this too is because my
mom suffered from you know, likeduring covide, she lost her mind.
And I learned so much about themental journey of many families right now,
and we need to be more intelligentabout what we put in our bodies.

(07:17):
So seventy percent of the cases ofalzheimer are women. Of the overall umbrella
of cases of Alzheimer's, seventy percentare women. And I think that we're
more sensitive to ingredients. Our bodiesare more sensitive somehow. So that's why

(07:40):
I came up with the deoderance andthe other that actually doesn't have b wax,
doesn't have corn starch, doesn't havea lot of ingredients, does have
aluminum, is gluten free, isvegan. So it's the best the orderance
in the market. I make sureit is the best for families. And
I'm a mother, so I knowI have to give my son the best

(08:01):
thing, you know, the bestthe odor and I can provide, right
like, So my company is givingfamilies peace of mind, you know,
And that's what mean right, itmakes sense. So Zulie, why don't
you show us the shower cap andshow us the deodorant, and then we'd
like to hear the journey that you'vetaken to where you are today. So

(08:24):
show us what they are. Okay, so here's the shower caps. So
my shower cups are made of recycledmaterials, so it's recycled plastic. But
it's paric so it's not thin.It's very thick, so that's why it's
very durable. My shower cups lastfrom four to seven years. They're handprinted,

(08:46):
so they print doesn't go away whenyou wash it. It's machine washable
and driable. They're reversible. Thepatent is on the forehead so it doesn't
mark your forehead right, and thelasting ke is on the back so it

(09:07):
adjusts on the back. And thenwhen you wear it it it's all your
hair. I'm not putting it alltogether, but if it's all your hair,
and we'll just you just need toadjust it. And a lot of
women have been used in my showercups for years, so I actually posted
today on LinkedIn there is a ladywho uses my shower cap and she says,

(09:28):
after three years, it looks likenew, and that's what my company
is doing. Of course, thismy company is sustainable by getting people support,
so if they know if they needa shower cup. My shower cups
are not cheap, Brian, They'reforty nine dollars, but this is the
cheapest shower cup because if you divideforty nine dollars open seven years, it's

(09:50):
going to be less than a centry. And people are buying disposable ones,
buying ones that fall apart. Sothat looks like a very well made,
good looking shower cap that maybe peoplethat are watching would be interested in
buying. And you have your websiteon their shopm Tiara dot com. So

(10:11):
Zulie, the shower cap is fantastic. I know that you have other colors
also of the shower cap now inblack. Yeah, people can go to
Amazon as well. They can findit there for Christmas. Is the best
gift, I mean for women whoare looking for a sustainable solution that actually
doesn't allow water to come in andkeeps your hair perfect. It's the best

(10:35):
shower cap. So basically, myshower caps were featured in Good Moyamaica and
Tory Johnson has been a great supporterof my products. And actually Michael Estraham
used it last Christmas. He usedhis one, the pink one, and
yeah, so basically I went todragons. Then that's the shark Tank of

(10:58):
Canada. It doesn't have as muchas you know, like it's very very
popular here, but it doesn't haveit's not as big as shark tank for
sure. Like, so I actuallythey this is a picture when I was
you know, like putting the tiater, you know, like after she wore
the shower cup and she took itoff. Look at how many hair.

(11:20):
Like hell, she has a longhair. This is Tomata and she actually
became Miss Canada after and yeah,so it's it's amazing how things are evolving.
And so let me show you thatthe orderance, So this is the
cop version. So I made itwith sustainable ingredients. So this is some

(11:43):
flower sea wax is the base ofour the orderance, and it has fourteen
natural ingredients that actually work together forfamilies that are looking for a safe option.
It has natural fragrance, so it'snot like other the oderance in the
mark that claim their natural but ifyou google them, they don't have natural

(12:05):
fragance. So this one has naturalfragance, natural everything, and it works
better than that. I mean Iwas very you know, I normally smell
and it was you know, didyou know that the orderance were tested in
men and then pass on to women, So the order was made on me.

(12:28):
So it's based on women, andit's putting on to you know,
even men can use that. Ithink I gave you a sample, you
know, and men love it too. So my son uses that. It's
good for kids, it's good formothers. Two things about that the odance.
It's made not in paper. Youknow. Now the companies are claiming
paper packaging as being the best forthe dance. I don't think paper pack

(12:52):
packaging should work because paper absorbs theoil in the dance, right, So
I wanted the others to be asgood as possible till the end of its
usage. This is post consumed plastic, so it's plastic number five and you
know, like so it's a goodyou know, it's really reusable plastic.

(13:13):
And it also lasts for from fourto six months, so this the orderance
will last you for a longer time. So it's that way is explainable.
Very nice, Zulie. Let's talkabout the company and even before you started
the company, after you had theidea, there were some things that you

(13:35):
needed to do to get to whereyou are today. So when you did
say, you know what came firstthe shower cap for the de orderance,
which definite, you know, likebasically both at the same time, but
because of easy way of development andcreation, I decided to go with the
shower cup because of course having thatthe orderance took a lot of money,

(14:00):
you know, making the others. It's a lot of money in development and
in the creation, working with thebest lap in the States. It's made
in the States, by the way. And yeah, So I started working
with a company that does products forrebuk for a duetas and they helped me
with the creation of the shape ofthe of the shower cup, so we

(14:22):
made it to adjust. So weworked together for months and then I got
a prototype that I took to Chinato find the supply the manufacturer. So
I went to three factories, Ijump on trains, I met different people,
you know, from different regions inChina, and I finally found the

(14:46):
company I really love to work withbecause they have the capacity, they have
the knowledge, they have the andalso you know, I realized to make
a reversible product, it needs tohave a special machinery. So I wanted
to have the best. But firstof all, go let's go back to
the fabric. Finding the fabric waslike a complete adventure, you know,

(15:09):
like finding the right fabric that actuallyworks and lasts for a long time.
You know. I went to shows, what I felt a little, b
Like I felt little because in China, you know, these shows are humongous
and you just feel like you're nobody. Like it's so big, so many
people. So, you know,I experienced so many good things. I

(15:31):
mean, I learned so much. How big is the world and how little
we are, but how powerful wecan be. Right Like that helps you
a perspective. You can be little, but at the same time you can
be very powerful by offering something thatis different. So now you ended up
getting a good factory. You felthappy about the material and getting ready for

(15:52):
production. So all of a sudden, you started producing the shower caps.
Yes, I start, you know, I started producing my shower cups.
And the journey of getting awareness ofit, like I had passion, you
know, and I put in mymind it has to be on TV.
So that was major, you know, the fact that I was in the

(16:14):
grammats. They found me I was, and then good mon America contacted me
and that led me to talk tothe Dragons then show, explaining, you
know, I needed the money togo into into the show, into into
build my America. So it wasa very good way to support you know,
I had sales, but you know, it was a good way to

(16:37):
say, hey, it's going somewhereto the to the dragons, and I
actually got a deal with the Dragonsand they are now my friends. The
deal didn't go through because of course, you know, they wanted a thirty
percent of my company. I couldn'tgive so much equity of my company.
At that point, I knew mycompany was going to grow with more products.
And I actually when I when Idid them, when I spoke to

(16:59):
them, I told them that thisis only the first products. We're going
to come up to women who understandthe quality I'm making for them, and
I'm going to come up with newproducts. And that's what I'm doing with
now that the Oudance. So thejourney of the Auderance happened during that time
that was very difficult for companies togrow. It was COVID, but luckily
Tory Johnson and her team took meto to the view. I was part

(17:26):
of the view they I was innational TV speaking to women inviting them to
buy my shower cups, and alsothe shower cups went to Kelly and Ryan.
So with that help, I wasable to develop the auderance. So
I was waiting for I worked fortwo straight years developing the audiance with this

(17:48):
lab. And in the end,you know, like they were like are
we working, how are you know? Like how things going? How is
the test? And like, youknow, what do you like? So
I was like, first of alldoing it with a so second, you
know, putting ingreens, putting backin greens. You know, I realized
which words which don't work? Andwhy do we have to mix all these
and why this was bad? Whythis was not good? Like I was

(18:11):
count you know, looking at allthe the the facts right, and then
we finally came up with a formulationthat it's solid, that works, that
it's tested, it's dermatologist tested. That's another important thing. We just got
that we have the topic of wordsby skiing care anarchy. These are aware

(18:33):
in the States, and you know, we just launched in May twenty twenty
three and we won the awards,so you know, like it's it's working.
And I went to UK and forthe shower cups. One of the
dragons in the Dragons Dragons in UKis huge and one of the dragons.
I always wanted to meet this lady, and the universe put me in front

(18:56):
of her. So I gave hermy shower cup and we're saying we're saving
the world war shower cup at atime. And she said, I love
my Tiata. She loves her,she loves it, she really does.
So congratulations on all the success thatyou've had so far. And what does
the future look like for you?Usually? What is it that you want

(19:18):
to see your company grow to.I know you have the two products,
you have your brand, and you'remaking your rounds. I know you're always
traveling and meeting new people. Whatdoes the future look like for you?
The future is communicating to people moreand more. The benefits of the deorderance
is a mission to convert. Imean it's only seven person. Imagine how

(19:41):
many people need to use a naturaldeoderance And for me takes one minute.
People believe in me, people knowmy journey. People understand that, you
know, there is a person witha heart that is doing something and I
want to talk to you about myjourney. So here is a picture of
me graduating and I'm a journalist. So I was reduating in Colombia and that

(20:03):
was a very special day. Withoutknowing a week after my life was going
to change completely. I went intoa hospital for a brain surgery and I
didn't. It didn't work out theway we all expected. Right like,
it was a success, It wasa very good surgery, but you know,

(20:25):
there were things that happened that youknow, I couldn't live. I
couldn't leave the hospital and I stayedthere for three months. Those were the
three longest months of my life andI almost died. So my reality,
and you know, the way Ifeel is that you have to create change

(20:45):
by your friend people better think justnot for the money. It's actually changed
for something better. So that's themessage. And I enjoyed it doing this.
I enjoyed communicating to people. Ienjoyed connecting deeply with families that understand
that what I'm doing is not justthe money, it's a it's a mission.

(21:06):
So that is important. So howI see my company going back to
your question, I see connecting tomore families. I think families need to
you know, they love I meanmore and more. Like yesterday I went
to assure them in a store inAurora, We're close to where I live,
and I hear the you know, the comments of women that you know,

(21:30):
like they don't know, you know, like you go to the supermarkets
and you don't know, you don'tknow what you're buying, you don't know.
So bringing leadership and talking to families, it's a different way to approach
the market. I don't see anycompany that does what I'm doing. So
I'm leading change, change for good, change for families who want something better.

(21:56):
And so with that, I seea line of products evolving, natural
products that are going to be inyour shower, that are going to be
in your shower, that are natural, that are sustainable, and that are
you know, that are made withthe best ingredients possible in the market.
It thinks, you know, likeevery day we learn more. You know,

(22:18):
one day we have one thing isgood and the other day is bad.
So we're going to be evolving. We're going to stay flexible to these
changes and always offer the best quality, the best possible quality and the most
natural way. What's been the biggestchallenge for you in your journey? Funny

(22:45):
enough, I was working, youknow, I have another company that does
construction raw materials, and the biggestchallenge sometimes is to be a woman.
Right Like people think that you know, you're strong, you you can do
it and all these things, butit takes time to realize that, right
and it takes effort, mental effort. So I was attending a conference last

(23:10):
week where we speak about the journeyof an entrepreneurial entrepreneur in terms of mental
health. So when you approach youknow, people, you don't know if
they're going to support you. Youdon't know if they follow your journey and
they want to over help. Theycan be your you know, detractors.
They can talk back in the backabout you. So all these challenges that

(23:33):
I'm you know, I face everyday. You know, I meet people.
Sometimes I'm hoping they support me witha grant, they support me.
I haven't received any grant so far. It's incredible, right, like a
woman who is creating visible change andit's Latina and it's a minority, it's
women. Know, you know, nobody, you know, like probably the

(23:57):
people who know how to get thesegrants and how to do it. You
know, that's that's been one ofthe biggest challenge to actually be recognized.
But you know, the good thingis that I have been getting some awards,
some recognition as well. And inthe future, I think it's going
to work. So it looks likeyou have fun. You're having fun doing

(24:19):
it too. It has it hasto be fun, you know, like
it's been challenging, but you cannotIf it's not fun, then then don't
do it because it's just like yourenergy. Definitely, there are inventors that
are watching it all stages of theirinvention. There's some people that are just

(24:41):
watching your story and maybe they'll inventsomething at some point. Can you give
the audience some words of wisdom asto when you come up with an idea
and bringing it to market like youhave. Yes, So basically, and
what I think your app is doingis connecting people that are going to be

(25:02):
able to ask questions. I don'tknow if there is going to be latest
pases for people to ask you questionsso you can help them, or it's
going to be any kind of resourcesthat you will provide to for people to
access information, because I think informationis key for inventors so they don't waste
their money. Right. Money isvery important for inventors because we're doing it

(25:23):
with our lifetime savings. So firstof all, be careful where you invest
your money or who you work with, because that will mean the success or
the failure of your project. Secondof all, be persistent. Connect to
the right people because you need tobe in the same level of the people

(25:48):
of the You know where you're going, so you need to find the right
mentors or the right people to toto continue with your projects. And the
thing that I invite people is tobelieve. You know, if you believe
in what you're doing and you're havingfun, you will be successful. Well

(26:11):
that's very interesting comments from you there, because you've definitely gone through your journey
and we've had some time to talka little bit deeper, and it's amazing
where you are right now and allthe successes that you've had. And yes,
in any business, there's challenges thatyou have, but you're a strong

(26:32):
lady and you're overcoming them and you'recontinuing to build on what your dreams and
your visions right, So we wishyou all the best Zuli, thank you.
I want to think I want tothank all my mentors. I want
to thank you. I want tothank all the retailers who are looking at
my products right now at my NaturalGuildrance and that are supporting my journey.

(26:55):
I believe that what you're doing isthe right thing, and I appreciate your
support because we're leading change together, you're making it happen. So thank you.
Thank you for coming up with yourinventions and bringing them into the world.

which has been a great supporter, and hopefully soon in many other retailers.

(27:38):
Oh Local tell in Miami. I'mgoing to Miami this Monday to launch
my natural deoderance there. So that'sthe first retailer in the States, and
I'm really excited. And locatl ishuge in Columbia, so let's let's hope
it goes there too, great stuff. Show us one more time your cap
