tip a bottle or two back asyou do it. Drink with us.
The second and last Tuesday of everymonth. On January second, twenty
thirteen, twenty seven year old NoelPaquette walked out of a New Year's Eve
party in Sarnia, Ontario, atabout two am. She had attended the

(00:46):
party with her boyfriend when they hada blowout fight and Noel stormed out and
headed home. She tried to geta taxi, but being New Year's Eve,
she couldn't get a cab, soshe decided to walk home, all
the way to Court Right, whichis south of Sarnia, where she had
recently bought a house. Several witnessesare walking down the street, crying that

(01:07):
was the last time she would beseen alive. From the south shore of
Lake Erie, this is Great Lake'sTrue crime. With the population of about

(02:19):
seventy two thousand people, Sarnia,Ontario, is located on Lake Huron,
at the mouth of the Saint ClairRiver. The city is known as a
large petrochemical hub and sits very closeto the United States border by car.
Sarnia is about an hour drive northof Detroit, Michigan, and an hour
west of London, Ontario. Sarniais the birthplace of Seawan Burr, a

(02:45):
former hockey player with the Mighty DetroitRed Wings, and Dave Madden, better
known as Ruben Kincaid on the TVsitcom The Partridge Family. As many residents
were recovering from a night of paring, Lynn Paquette was worried sick because she
couldn't get a hold of her daughter, Noel. Lynn eventually called police and

(03:07):
explained that she and her daughter weresupposed to see each other that day,
but she hadn't seen Noel and couldn'tget ahold of earth through cell phone,
text message, or any other means. Lynn and Noel were exceptionally close,
often speaking to each other four orfive times a day. After police became

(03:28):
involved, a massive search effort waslaunched in an attempt to locate the school
teacher. Hundreds of people joined thesearch party on the morning of Wednesday,
January second. They scoured the streetsof Aunt Sarnia, along with businesses and
homes in the city's south end.At ten thirty am that morning, the
Ontario Provincial Police reported that an adultfemale body was found in a wood lot

(03:53):
on Mandamund Road. The body, unfortunately turned out to be that of Noel.
It was apparent that she had beenmurdered. The Sarnia community showed a
tremendous out boring of sorrow and lovefor Noel. Friends and family launched a
Facebook memorial called Prayers for Noel MariePaquette, which had attracted more than six

(04:17):
thousand likes by Friday afternoon. Hundredsof people attended a memorial event at Sarnia's
Centennial Park a couple days later.Noel was born on December eleventh, nineteen
eighty five, and was a teacherand a tutor with a local Catholic school
board. She had three siblings andhad recently completed a long term substitute teaching

(04:43):
position at Saint Matthew's School in Sarnia, filling in for a teacher on maternity
leave. As well as teaching,Noel also worked at a nonprofit called Community
Living Sarnia Lambdon and volunteered her timewith another nonprofit called the Sunshine Foundation.
Noel enjoyed playing soccer and attending classesat a local gym called Good Life Fitness.

(05:14):
By all accounts, Noel was greatlyloved by the community and everyone that
knew her. She was described byone person as a beautiful person inside and
out. Someone else said she wassomeone who makes you laugh until you can't
stop. She was sassy and strong, willed, gentle and kind, a
wonderful teacher, an amazing daughter. One of the parents of the students said

(05:40):
that her son loved Noel, notingthat her child would say how much he
missed his beloved teacher on weekends. So back to the night that Noel went
missing. It was just after fouram on New Year's Day twenty thirteen.
Two Ontario Provincial Police officers approached awhite Pontiac Grand Prix that appeared to be

(06:02):
broken down on the side of theroad just on the Outskirts of Sarnia.
Inside the car were a thirty oneyear old woman named Tanya Bogdanovitch and a
twenty two year old man named MichaelMcGregor. Bogdanovitch actually got out of the
car before police reached it. Shewas crying and had blood on her face

(06:26):
and hands. She told the officersthat her friend and the passenger seat had
cut himself. Then she said sheand McGregor were out to try sexualized quote
knife play. They said they'd drivenout into the country to celebrate the new
year by indulging in their kinky relationship. On the car floor on the driver's

(06:51):
side was a knife that looked likeit had been freshly cleaned off in the
snow. The pair tried to convincethe police that way they are up to
was weird, but nothing criminal orsinister. Bogdanovitch explained that the car had
run out of oil, causing itto stall out. While sitting in the
immobile Grand Prix, she said, the two decided to experiment with knife play,

(07:15):
and in doing so, McGregor hadbadly hurt himself. I mean,
so far, everything seems pretty standard, right. The two police officers called
an ambulance and Bogdanovitch and McGregor wereallowed to wait in the car until it
arrived, and while they were inthe car, they were seen kissing passionately.

(07:36):
The two were transported by the ambulanceto a hospital in Sarnia. On
the ride to the hospital, McGregorsmiled and asked the paramedic quote, is
this the strangest thing you have everhad? At the hospital? While McGregor
was being tended to, Bogdanovitch hadher nose pressed up against the treatment room

(07:57):
window and she was pacing back four. By the concerned look on her face,
hospital staff thought she was McGregor's mother. Later, the two were seen
in the emergency room area holding eachother, kissing and embracing. In one
of the treatment rooms, witnesses sawthem lying on the stretchers with their hands

(08:18):
to their faces, giggling and laughinguncontrollably. It didn't take investigators long to
put two and two together, andon Friday, January fourth, police announced
that Tanya Bogdanovitch and Michael McGregor werearrested without incident the previous afternoon, just

(08:39):
one day after Noel's remains were discovered. Although they were arrested in London,
Ontario. Bogdanovitch and McGregor both livedin Sarnia, although in separate homes.
When the pair were arraigned on firstdegree murder charges, McGregor appeared in court
with both his hands wrapped in splintsand taped as result of those so called

(09:01):
knife play injuries in the car.Bogdanovich was a twenty ten graduate of Lambdon
College in Sarnia, and held severalpositions at the college, including as a
bartender at the campus pub and vicepresident of the student council. She had
been raised by a single mother andwas said to have had a high level

(09:22):
of self confidence as a teenager. She was fun and quirky, someone who
didn't want to fit in. Afterher parents divorced when Bogdanovitch was a child,
her mother eventually remarried. Antanya's rebelliousattitude led to constant conflict with her

(09:43):
stepfather. Tensions in the family escalatedto the point where the fifteen year old
Bogdanovitch was sent to live in agroup home with other troubled teens. At
first, Bogdanovitch was content living inthe group home setting enough to deal with
her stepfather's strict discipline, but shequickly fell into a pattern of physical,

(10:05):
sexual, and emotional views. Atthe group home. It was a living
nightmare, and she begged her motherto let her move back home. Bogdanovitch's
mother, however, refused to lether move back, in effectively choosing her
husband over her own daughter. Atthe age of eighteen, Bogdanovitch was able

(10:26):
to move out of the group homeand into an apartment. In a short
amount of time, Tanya Bogdanovitch gotmarried and had two children. Her husband,
however, walked out on the family, leaving Bogdanovitch to struggle to pay
the bills as a single mother herself. She would take any jobs that she
could to make money. Bogdanovitch eventuallysaved up some money and put herself through

(10:50):
nursing school. After graduation, shefound a job at a senior center and
found some happiness in a new relationshipship. While her living boyfriend was by
all accounts a decent man and agood partner for Bogdanovich in many ways,
she found that she was kind ofbored and dissatisfied, So Tanya Bogdanovitch turned

(11:16):
to the Internet looking for someone alittle more adventurous. On a social media
site for people interested in bondage, dominance and sado masochism, she met The
eighteen year old McGregor was a youngman who had always been a bit of
a loaner. He spent a greatdeal of time on the Internet as a
teenager and started looking at online porn. When he left home for college,

(11:43):
he tried to seek out some relationshipsbut didn't really have much luck, so
he went back to the Internet, creating a profile on a website focused on
fetish sex, and that's how hemet the much older Bogdanovich. The couple
became what Bogdanovitch, who had herown quote sexual bucket list of things she

(12:07):
wanted to do, described in hermany Texan online activities as a perfect match.
They called themselves Sterling Archer in LanaKin, after characters in their favorite
TV program. It was an animatedseries called Archer, and it aired on
the FX cable network. I've neverheard of this show before personally, and

(12:31):
I'm totally unfamiliar with it, sothey can't say anything about it good or
bad. But their activities escalated fromrole play, rape fantasies, to knife
play, to ultimately hatching a planto abduct a young victim for a totally
disgusting forrest rape fantasy that the twohad concocted and shared together. This is

(12:54):
how the whole terrible ordeal started, and now Bogdanovitch and McGregor were tribute tried
for murder, among quite a fewother crimes. In April twenty fifteen,
a judge ordered the trial to beheard outside of Sarnia because of all the
publicity that the case had received locally, plus the facilities were small and outdated,

(13:18):
and this was definitely going to bea very publicized trial with lots of
media attention. So Superior Court JusticeThomas Heeney, the region's senior justice,
decided that the relatively close city ofWindsor was the most suitable location for the
jury trial, which was slated forApril twenty sixteen. For those not familiar

(13:39):
with the area, Windsor, Ontario, was directly across the river from Detroit,
Michigan. The larger urban center ofWindsor would have a much larger jewelry
pool, so jewels were less likelyto be aware of the details of the
case and presumably less biased going intothe trial. Windsor also had a new

(14:01):
provincial Justice center, which was saidto be more ideal for efficient prisoner transport.
The materials presented at the trial startedto fill in the blanks at what
had actually happened that night. Theevidence against Bugdanovitch and McGregor was overwhelming.

(14:22):
These were hardly criminal masterminds, afterall. Both of them eventually pleaded guilty
to first degree murder in December twentyfifteen, when it was very clear that
the two would be found guilty ina jury trial. So in February twenty
sixteen, the truly horrific and stunningdetails about the abduction, assault, and

(14:48):
murder of twenty seven year old Noelby McGregor and Bagdanovitch began to be read
into the record at the pair's sentencinghearing. Through the entire the two of
them, seated in separate glass prisonersboxes, looked at the floor or straight
ahead. The two would never makeeye contact, even when walking directly past

(15:11):
each other. The sentencing hearing uncovereda very disturbing account that underlined how these
two killers, who had only knowneach other for seven months, through that
fetish social networking site were connected bya weird, disgusting, violent desire for
sex and ultimately to assault and staba woman, And from an agreed statement

(15:35):
of facts, the Assistant Crown AttorneyMichael Carnegie told Superior Court Justice Bruce Thomas
that Noel, who again was ateacher or tutor community volunteer, was abducted
at random and was basically in thewrong place at the wrong time. She

(15:56):
was driven around for about twelve orthirteen miles to a very remote rural road
where she was quote directed at knifepoint unquote to walk into the woods,
and it was at that point shewas assaulted. The evidence made it clear
that Noel fought back. She foughtwith all her might and force against these

(16:17):
two attackers who were drawn together bythat fetish website. Bogdanovitch, who started
searching that site, had a boyfriendand three children at the time. But
again Bogdanovitch was bored or whatever, and McGregor had no luck with the ladies
at college, so they met onthat website. The first time they actually

(16:38):
got together in person was June twentytwelve, and they didn't have any sort
of normal romantic encounter. They actuallyhad a sort of rape scene together,
which is beyond disturbing. So there'squite a few other disturbing details about their

(16:59):
desires and interests and fantasies, butI'm not going to go into those,
suffice to say that the relationship hadvery disgusting and disturbing fetishes and fantasies,
and apparently it wasn't the greatest relationshipeither. Shocker. I know there was
a lot of jealousy on both sidesover things that the other were doing,

(17:22):
but at this sentencing, they bothsaid they wished they could reverse their actions
and bring Noel back to life.At the same time, they did not
ask for forgiveness. McGregor said, quote, I want to say sorry.
I know I can't change or takeback what I've done, no matter how
much I wish I could. WhatI did was terrible, and because of

(17:45):
it, Noel is gone, wheninstead she should still be with you.
I'm not asking for your forgiveness.I don't deserve it and could never hope
for it. End quote. TanyaBogdanovitch's voice broke as she acknowledged the all
encompassing pain that she caused Noel's familyand friends. Quote One Night Forever changed

(18:10):
the course of many lives and itcan never be undone end quote. She
also said that she regretted waiting solong deplete guilty to her crimes. At
least one member of Noel's family leftthe courtroom while Bogdanovitch spoke. Others looked
down and wiped tears from their eyes. Their offenses carried an automatic life sentence

(18:33):
with no chance of parole for twentyfive years. The pair were also required
to be added to the DNA Bankand Sex Offender Registry and face a lifetime
firearms band in Canada. They're alsorequired to refrain from contacting any of Noel's
family or friends. When handing downthat automatic sentence, which was the most

(18:56):
strict available under law, Ontario's SuperiorCourt Judge Bruce Thomas said that the pair's
vile and despicable actions required them tobe removed from society for most of their
lives. Some might say all oftheir lives, but apparently that was the
most strict sentence available. Noel's father, Roger Paquette, set outside the courthouse

(19:21):
that the sentence was neither an endingnor beginning. He did say that it's
a message to everyone to be cautious, but not afraid to live life to
the fulest and to love and bekind, he said, quote our memories
of our daughter Noel have given usthe courage to live on. Noel Marie

(19:45):
Paquette is interred at Resurrection Cemetery inSarnia, Ontario. She lives on not
only the memories of family and friends, but there are a number of online
memorials in both website format and onsocial media featuring memories of Noel and tributes.
There's also a very active charity inSarnia called Noel's Gift to Children.

(20:10):
This organization's slogan is quote dedicated towith proving the lives of children in our
communities, and that's exactly what theydo through a student nutrition program, stocking
school supply cabinets, hosting community days, and many other activities. There is
a Light Up the Night for Noelfive k road race this September. For

(20:32):
more information on Noel's Gift to Children, please check them out online at Noel's
Gift dot CAA. Now let meswitch gears here for a minute. I
have a quick streaming recommendation before wewrap things up. I recently caught the

(20:56):
series Hijack on Apple TV. It'sa seven episode series starring edgris Elba,
who, of course also starred inthe greatest TV show ever, Luther.
I get greatest except for The XFiles and maybe The Shield and Republic of
Doyle and the original Magnum Pi.But I digress. The basic plot of

(21:17):
the story involves the hijacking of acommercial airplane traveling from Dubai to London.
I was at first skeptical that sevenepisodes about a hijacking would hold my attention,
but it definitely did. I highlyrecommend checking out Hijack if you haven't
done so already. And that's allfor this episode of Great Lakes True Crime.
