Speaker 1 (00:09):
Old and welcome back Great Iron Jamble, the only podcast
that puts its money where its mouth is. I'm your host,
Rich Ron, and I'm joined by the entire collective, the Disciple,
Brett Colson, Donni DP Peters, and the resident Moose himself
(00:30):
mo Nuwara. If you are watching this on YouTube, please
like the video and subscribe to the channel Listeners, rate
and review on your Podcatter of Choice five stars only.
I didn't look anybody up, so I'm just I'm guessing here.
This is an absolute guest. We were doing so much
chitter chatter before record that I am just reaching into
(00:52):
the ether and guessing that this is a five star
player five stars only, Like Abdul Harder Edge, Big.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Blue, I feel like you're a big favorite there.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
I think come like minus three hundred for Abdult Carter
to be five stars. Not on Rivals anymore. Rivals purchased
by something on three, which is very sad. Every time
that I google a player's name in Rivals and something
on three dot com comes up, Do we have confirmation?
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Brett?
Speaker 1 (01:26):
I feel like you're googling over there? Or am I
just creating bad rating? Awful radio? Good job, always be producing.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Gritch Penn State. Penn State's pulling five stars. I guess
they are.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Now it's your program again, I mean just his now
I just have to look it up. This is the
part of the podcast that is called googling Abdolt Carter
Rivals Confirmed five star, Confirmed, five stars, five stars, ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Nine, national number ten overall.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Ninety nine point rating. Guy was good at football in
Happy Valley. And we're gonna once again if there's two teams.
I guess Brittish just driving us straight into insanity with
two weeks of the Arizona Cardinals and now three straight
weeks of the New York Football Giants, because we're going
(02:14):
to start looking at Giants communists this week. And the
basis for this show is we want to zoom in
and look at things that specific things in week one
that we are interested in gaining knowledge about. There is
so much ambiguity as we start the season. Despite everyone
(02:35):
telling you for the last three or four months what
these teams are, who they're going to be, what their
output is going to be on both sides of the ball,
we are starting the season with the blank slate and
a lot of the things that have been discussed are
going to be thrown right out the window when the
bullets start flying in September, and we want to key on,
key in on some specific things that are going to
(02:58):
change our opinions on these teams and perhaps give us
a chance to get out ahead of it as lines
start changing immediately in week two and beyond. And we're
going to start with Giants Comedies because it's a very
interesting matchup for two reasons. The Giants have been a
very interesting team for this podcast, specifically on defense. But
(03:20):
on the other side of the ball, you have this
Commander's team who everybody is just attaching with that ascendant quality,
a second year quarterback, the addition of offensive line and weapons,
and what are they really going to be when the
lights come on? So Brett's going to kick things off
because he's interested in the number itself, the number that
(03:43):
circuit's going to give us what the hook is going
to be. And I think that's a good table setter
for the game itself. So Brett, what are your thoughts
here on this matchup?
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Well, really, I'm just committing to the bit and just
I have to talk Giants because I love getting roasted
by the Discord every week. About my Giants plays. But
what I can say right now is we as we
get ready for circum millions next week, is the Giants
are gonna be on my car next week. That's almost
a certainty. The question is gonna be where do they
land in my car? And that's gonna depend on what
number we get?
Speaker 2 (04:16):
What are you doing?
Speaker 4 (04:18):
Like?
Speaker 2 (04:18):
What what strategy?
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Who's picking the giants next week?
Speaker 5 (04:22):
We're gonna give our picks right now?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
All good.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
What I'm saying is I don't know where they'll land
on my card. I don't know if they'll be on
our card because I don't know what number Circle is
gonna give us. That's what I'm watching next week is
where does this line move? Right now? You can find
six and a half. Is it gonna get to seven?
Is it gonna get back to six? Like Mo might
have a better idea of where this is gonna land
by Thursday, you know, Friday, Saturday, Sunday next week, but
(04:46):
it's short. If it's short of seven, I probably will
have the Giants on my car next week. So I'm
I'll do a deeper dive into my reasoning next week. Obviously,
as we talk about the Week one games but I
do think these are two strong regression candidates in different directions.
So I am looking heavily at the Giants for Week one.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
There's a specific unit in this game that MO was
interested in My sent out requests for what people were
looking for, and it is that Giants defensive units. So Mo,
what are your thoughts on Big Glue?
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Well, first off, if I had to guess which way
the line's going to move, I would guess towards Washington
just because the McLaurin news. I feel like that matters.
I mean that matters hugely. I had that in my
notes when we very first started handicapping for the season,
was I think the Giant, I think Washington is. I
(05:40):
just feel like they've gotten no good passing targets and
I don't know where this offense is going to go
if they don't have McLaurin. I think he's massively important.
I know there was games he disappeared last year, but
I just don't think this is going to be another
high level offense really if they don't have McLaurin. So
I just I don't like these other target gets. Diami
(06:01):
Brown like actually did good work for them. So yeah,
I think they need him. And yeah, this Giants defense,
I don't know if I talked about it when we
talked Giants, but I think it could be pretty good.
Speaker 6 (06:15):
Man.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
We know the upfront. Everyone knows that this team is
very strong upfront, right. The questions are in the secondary.
So it's just it was a bad group, I think
last year. But there's been a lot of youth and
there's been some talent, and you know, I know a
lot of people. I haven't heard anyone say anything good
(06:38):
about Paulson Adebo. I thought he was decent when with
the Saints. I always thought he was okay. So I
guess I just think he's maybe better than everybody else does.
The safeties should be pretty good. I mean, Jevon Holland
was very good in Miami, and that Tyler Nubbin or Nuban,
I'm not exactly sure how to pronounce his name, but
I think he was fairly solid last year.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
So we've seen.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
Dable coach with a team that you know, obviously he
was on offense, but the Bills had a similar kind
of setup where their corners weren't great, but their safeties
were very good and carried a lot of the water
for the coverage unit, so you know, obviously a first
round pick a couple of years ago on Deontay Banks, Like,
(07:23):
there's enough talent here that this, if these guys make
a leap, this could be a really good defense. So
I feel like with the fact that nobody is going
to give this team any respect, all I've been hearing
about is basically the Giants are going to be you know,
zero to eight day ball fired, and you know day
(07:46):
ball should be minus three hundred to be first coach
fired and whatever else. Like nobody has had anything good
to say about the Giants, So I think if this
defense gets off to a good start, it's probably not
going to move people's needles at all. So maybe we
could sneak in.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Some value still Week two here, one of Donnie's overarching
questions was second year quarterbacks, and there's one in this game,
perhaps with more hype than any other ascending player in
the NFL right now, and that's Jade and Daniels DP,
So you'll be looking out for him in this game
against that tough front seven. I am.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
I mean, I think I align with these guys in
saying that the I think the Giants front seven is
going to be pretty pretty darn good. And this is
a tough test for Jayden right out of the gate.
I mean, I don't know. When I watched him last year,
I thought he was good, yes, I mean, don't get
me wrong, but I also felt like there was some
(08:44):
stuff that maybe he got away with a little bit
at times, which is fine. You know, things can go
your way. So I'm just very curious on how his
second year is going to go. And I would loop
him in with Caleb Williams, Michael Pennix, Bonix, you know
Bryce specific to Bryce Young. You know, are we gonna
get Bryce Young from the first half or the second
(09:04):
half of last year? You know, so these guys can
all go kind of one way or another. I mean,
I feel like Jaden Daniels is almost just being anointed
as the guy, like he's just gonna have a good
sophomore season no matter what. And it's like, okay, but
like what if a lot of things just went their
way last year? I mean, like, you know, for example,
(09:26):
one one example, the freaking hell Mary. I mean, like
what if that just doesn't happen? You know, like stuff
like that, right, you know, So it's like, is he
just gonna pick up where he left off. I know
coming into last season, the big thing with him was
he's really thin, he likes to run, he doesn't like
to get down. Does that possibly come back and bite
him this time around? Like like all there's all that
(09:48):
those questions. Kayleb Williams, Right, can we talk about him?
What's it gonna look like under Ben Johnson? Is he
gonna look like like just running around like crazy, like
he can't grass the offense or whatever, or is all
of a sudden he's gonna be good and we're just
gonna be like, Yeah, Ben Johnson's the guy. Michael Pennix,
is he gonna look like a genuine starter in the NFL?
Speaker 6 (10:04):
Is he?
Speaker 5 (10:05):
I mean, we don't know. Like if once these guys
start preparing for a quarterback, like they tend to figure
things out and give the quarterback a lot more problems.
I would also I would put bon Nicks right with
Jayden Daniels in that, Like I think people are kind
of just expecting him. No, you text us about your
buddy the other day, you said he had an amazing year, right,
Like people are just thinking Bonick's boom, Like this is it.
(10:27):
He's going places. I think we're all high on the Broncos.
I think we're higher than we thought we were gonna
be on Bonick specifically. But let's not just go nuts
here and be like he's he's the guy. He's going
to be incredible, right, So there's all that sort of stuff.
And then of course I mentioned Bryce Young but but yeah,
with this game, I think it's gonna be pretty interesting.
This is a tough, tough defense at least in my opinion,
in these guys' opinion, that he's gonna go up against first.
(10:49):
So is he gonna look good or are we gonna
have to kind of you know, I think people not
only with Jaden Daniels, are saying like, oh yeah, let's
just pencil in you know, Washington for the playoffs, like
they're back, they're washing and they're going to the playoffs.
Well what if they're not? I mean, what if he
just comes back a little bit like they went from
like nothing to something in a split second like that.
(11:10):
That feels like that might be more the anomaly than
some other stuff. So let's just like see how it goes.
I guess, you.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Know, fantasy people will be all eyes tuned on the
backfield in Washington to see what the deployment is between
Bill Krossky something Bill Krosski, Austin Eckler, and Chris Rodriguez.
As the Bill Crossky stream steam excuse me in the
best ball streets has been infanity. This guy is going
(11:38):
in single digit rounds now coming out of nowhere, especially
after the Brian Robinson trade. Another game, let's pivot to
Raiders at Patriots. Two head coaches who had sabbaticals from
the NFL. Pete Carroll was a surprise return to the league.
Rabel was more of a one year reset. He hung
(12:01):
out in Cleveland with the Browns and then was going
to get back in the action return to Foxboro to
be with the Patriots. So keep an eye out on
how these coaches deploy these teams if both of them
are still the stubborn defensive coaches they were the last
time we saw them on a football field. But specifically,
(12:25):
Moe is looking at the new England Patriots and two
units that improved defense that is full of free agents
that everyone is super excited about. And then that offensive line,
which I've been told Mo can't be worse than last year.
It just can't be can't be worse than last year.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:45):
First of all, I just want to ask, is that
a pump king already, Brett, It's already Pumpkins season.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
The beer companies have won. I never used to drink
pumpkin beers before, like September thirtieth, but now I have
no choice because they take them off the shelves in
like October. So now it's just it's just pumpkin. Pumpkin
beer season now in August.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Pumpkin in August.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
This is a pumpkin.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Anyways.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
For the record, we're not sponsored by Pumpkin, but if
you guys want to send us some beer, we're in.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:16):
I think a sneaky, big test for the Patriots right
out of the gate. I mean, I don't think anybody's
looking at this game and like, oh wow, they have
to face the Raiders, but maybe they should be because
I think the Raiders have some strengths where we kind
of expect the Patriots might be vulnerable. Right, we have
a Raiders defense that's highly questionable, but similar to what
(13:40):
I said about the Giants, I think most of that
question is in the secondary. I'm completely understanding anyone who's
questioning this secondary it doesn't look great, right, So yeah,
I mean there should be some space there, but this
is still a very good pass rush led by a
top five pass rusher right in Max Crosby. So, you know,
(14:01):
facing off against this Patriots O line that I think
Rich and I are highly skeptical about, I think that's
a huge test.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
And then on the other side of the.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
Ball, I've been hearing a lot of optimism about this
Patriots defense. I was listening to some preview pob the
other day and they seemed quite confident that this would
be a top half of the league defense. And I'm
not that confident. I'm looking at this roster and I
see a lot of new pieces. I mean, are some
of them recognizable names that could be good pieces?
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Yeah, But.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
Just throwing all these new players into the mix here
with a new coaching staff, I don't know what's going
to happen there. I mean, I feel like that's, even
in a good case, is likely going to take some
time to gel. And this Raiders offense looks fairly solid.
So I think the Patriots, if they don't get off
to a good start, I won't be surprised.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
But I think some people who have a lot of stock.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
In this team are going to to be pretty worried
if that happens, and I think that's reasonable.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
So I have Raiders money bet line in my account.
Already got to shout out our guy in the discord,
mister stema big Spolaine fan. I put him on Spolane
over tackles one time and he was all the way
bought in. Spolaine now a linebacker on the Patriots. And
the reason why I love Spolaine and IDP, I love
(15:26):
betting Spolaine over tackles is because Splaine can't cover the door,
so he allows tons of receptions and then cleans up
with tackles and lining up across from him in this
contest is going to be perhaps the most prolific tight
end to play the game since Rob Goronkowski in Rock Bowers.
(15:48):
So that is a horrifying matchup for the Patriots. I'm
really interested in seeing Gino Smith, right. We saw him
have this resurgence in Seattle. Now he's in a new location,
new receivers. We have the what's the best way of
(16:09):
putting it, the turbulence with Jacoby Myers. Currently don't know
if that situation will get ironed out with him requesting
a trade. The Raiders came out and said that, well,
at least through the media, they leaked that one team
reached out, but they wanted to eat. They wanted the
Raiders to eat salary and trade it. So they have
no interest in that. So you know, as of recording,
(16:31):
Myers will still be out there. There's a ton of
buzz for Dante Thornton, who has looked quite good in
this offense and is very much a geno receiver. Gino
a player that is willing to throw the ball into
very tight windows, and Dante Thornton has the profile of
somebody who's willing to get up and high point the
(16:51):
ball and use his athleticism outside of the numbers. So
that seems like a pretty good marriage there. So yeah,
I'm very interested in seeing how both of these teams
come out.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
DP.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
I know you've been dialed in Wei twenty four to
seven in the Peters household. What do you got here?
Your boy Vrabel back in New England, your backyard team,
the Las Vegas Raiders with the return of Pete Carroll.
What are you looking for here in this matchup?
Speaker 5 (17:20):
That if both teams have an adult in the room.
I mean, can we start there. I mean, these coaches
were the coaching staffs last season were dreadful for both
these organizations. So I mean, does Pete Carroll have his fastball?
Likely not, But can he be an adult in the room.
I would say so. I would think so, Like he's
(17:40):
certainly experienced. I think he garners the respect and I
think that that can help motivate the team. I would
extend the adult in the room aspect to I do
think Gino is an adult in the room. And they've been,
you know, throwing whatever the hell out there for quarterback
for how god knows how long, So you know, I
think Gino can can help that as well. And if
you improve coaching quarterback, I think you're gonna be halfway
(18:01):
decent in this league overall. Now on the other side, Rabel,
I have to imagine he's an upgrade over Gerard Mayo.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
I have to.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
I mean, I know, you guys can say what you
want about the offensive line, but for the coaching staff,
I mean, come on, it was it was dreadful for
so long. It was dreadful under the last years of Belichick.
You guys know, I was on that train a lot
it was dreadful under Jerwd Mayo. It has to be
better under Mike Rabel, you know. So if Drake may
can just be somewhat competent, I think they'll be okay.
(18:32):
So I'm just I'm not expecting the world from either
of these teams. I think they're going to be better
than some people out there might expect. The Patriots. I know,
it's kind of like a split camp. Some people absolutely
love them. Some people are like in the camp if
you guys were, maybe they're not that good. Just have
some adults in the room and just be somewhat good, okay,
likes just somewhat decent and like like start the foundation
(18:53):
the building blocks to go forward. So you know, if
they're out there they're doing dumb penalties, you know, it
just looks like the total mess that it was in
past seasons, then I'm probably gonna be out because the
foundational stuff. But under Vrabel, under Peak Carroll, you know,
should be pretty locked in, Like that should be dialed in,
you know. And if that stuff's not dialed in, then
(19:14):
if I was a supporter or a backer of these teams,
I would be highly worried.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
Let's talk Detroit Lions. A number one story for them
this offseason was the brain drain both sides of the ball,
losing coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn and they open
up the season a big game against I guess it's
the entire collectives, but more specifically it is Brett's so
(19:44):
an immediate test. But I know you didn't put anything
for this, but I want to take your temperature on
the head coach Dan Campbell. You were the biggest skeptic
on this podcast about man Campbell, his button clicking, his
ran aggressiveness. Where I would want to take your temperature.
Where are you at today on Dan Campbell? What is
(20:06):
your confidence in him rebuilding a staff that was allegedly
very strong and put out a very good team these
last couple of years. The silence, the silence says everything.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Dan Campbell is. He's just He's going to be who
he is and always was. He's going to continue clicking buttons.
He's going to go on his gut always And did
he make these hires just off gut? Like I can't
trust this guy to make critical decisions, especially in the
playoffs when it matters most. I don't think, I just
I don't feel good about this team under Campbell. I
(20:42):
what I respect about him is that his players love him,
They play for him, They get up every single week,
and you can trust that they will get up for
every game. But the other stuff, I just I just
feel like he's so far behind a guy like Lafleur.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
Well, what are the signifiers from the Lions in Week
one that will make you comfortable in saying that this
offense is a facsimile of what we've seen the last
couple of years post Ben Johnson.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
I think any sort of good performance would because I
think this is a sneaky, really really tough spot. I
even as a green Bay optimist, was surprised looking at
these numbers. I mean green Bay very quietly fourth in
defense EPA last year, fifth in defense DVOA. I don't
(21:32):
think a lot of people realize how strong this defense
was last year. So you got Jared Goff. I know
it's December, but it's I'm not December. But you know
it's still an outdoor game where his record isn't good.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
Like I feel like.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
Things if it was a lot of Ben Johnson, things
could go really far our South, at least in Week one.
You know, in a really tough matchup here outside with
you know, we know that even if offensive line ends
up being good here, the time it's probably gonna be
vulnerable is the early part of the season because we
(22:17):
know continuity is gonna matter, you know, So bringing in
two new guards here. I think maybe the left guard
was in the you know, in the system last year,
I believe, but you know it wasn't starting, so still
need to build continuity there. And then you have a
(22:38):
rookie on the other side. Even if the Lions end
up being good, this could be a rough debut for
everybody involved. And we're just gonna see, you know, how
much was Ben Johnson, how much was everything else? Everything
else could be carrying plenty of weight here. That's that
(22:59):
would not surprise. I mean, this is still a very
talented roster. Like that's at the end of the day.
You look at the Lions, they still have a very
talented roster. So if they win twelve games and win
the division again, nobody should be surprised at all. But
a rough debut here is well within reason, I think
(23:21):
dark off m.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
BB Donny, same question to you, what specifically are you
looking for from this Lions team to give you any
comfort that they'll be the same or similar Lions offense
that we've seen the last couple of years.
Speaker 5 (23:34):
I mean, I just want to look and see if
it's smooth, Like if if it looks like it doesn't
matter who the coordinators were, and if we weren't questioning
it during the game, right, like, if it just looks like, yeah,
this looks like the Lions offense just looks like the
Lions defense because they lost it on both sides of
the ball. But if it looks like hmm, I don't know,
it might take a few weeks for them to get
this going on either side of the ball, then it's like, okay, well,
(23:57):
I mean yeah, maybe, like Mos said, they might be
good by the end of the season, But are they
gonna need some sort of ramp up or is this
just you know, Dan Campbell's gonna throw the balls out
there and they're just gonna pick up where they left off.
Like that's what I'm looking forward to. So if there's
any sort of hiccup within the offense or the defense,
you know, offense, I think it's gonna be a little
bit more telling because you can you'll be able to
kind of see things. But you know that's gonna be
(24:19):
the biggest point, right. And like again, if we're sitting
there questioning the fact they're like, oh you know, or
if people are even on their phones and they're like, oh, hey,
who's the new offensive court and who's like if you're
doing that, then there's probably an issue because you're probably
wondering it.
Speaker 4 (24:31):
Right.
Speaker 5 (24:32):
So it's just as simple as that is. It just
gonna be smooth, and we're just gonna be like, yeah, whatever,
whoever Dan Campbell picks, Dan Campbll picks, it just doesn't matter.
This team is that talented and that good and they're
just going through their stuff. That's what they do. But
if we're still like hmm, yeah, I wonder if we
should have had Ben Johnson back, or if I wonder
if we should have had still had Aaron Glenn back, right,
I mean, so, yeah, that's the smoothness of it. Let's
see if it's rockier if it's smooth.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
I love the word smooth. The word I wrote down
was rhythm. I want to see this offense operate with
the same rhythm. Jared Goff was tenth in attempts last
year and second in the league in completion percentage. There
was a rhythm to this offense. There were very little mistakes,
protections were called out, everything was in sync. Like you said, Donnie,
(25:16):
everything was smooth when this offense was on the field.
It didn't look out of place. And like you said,
I think we'll know fairly quickly in this game, like
most at a road game outside divisional tough team in
the Packers, if we're seeing a team in transition learning
new things and struggling to do so, or a team
(25:39):
that just has a bunch of talent picked it right
back up and is able to execute like they were
last year. And I think that information is going to
be critical because the market is not going to shift
too strong in Week two, in the first couple of
weeks of the season, and if the Lions, I think
(25:59):
the case with which we would get value is if
the Lions appear way worse than they were the year before,
I don't think the markets would pivot quickly, and I
think they would be able for us to grab some
value because if the Lions are just the Lions, then
they're just gonna keep getting treated like the Lions and
we won't be able to snag any value. So the
right tail case is probably where we would be able
(26:21):
to grab some value in these subsequent weeks. Staying in division,
the game that I am most interested in this weekend
is Bears Vikings. Appropriately, it is the cherry on top
on Monday Night football, because you have the boy genius
assuming the head coach position in the midway, and you've
(26:45):
got a Bears team with brand new weapons in Luther
Burden and Loveland Colston Loveland the tight end. You've got
a second year quarterback who was number one overall pick
and then disappointed. Can he bounce back and look like
the player that people thought he was during the draft
(27:06):
process or will it be more of the struggling Brett's
famed idiotic Caleb Williams from last year. And then you
got you got a Vikings team where if we're talking roster,
this is a super Bowl caliber roster with a super
(27:27):
Bowl caliber head coach calling plays on offense, and a
super Bowl caliber defensive coordinator in Brian Flores. But who
the hell knows what the quarterback is going to look like?
And it's a an organization that appears nervous on the
surface about that room making transactions, trading for a new
(27:50):
backup quarterback, not confident with the guys that they had
behind JJ McCarthy, And what happens if this kid comes
out and he just stinks. Right in theory, you would
think new quarterback guy, they drafted high guy, they invested
draft capital into, get up and get that, they would
(28:12):
have a very long leash. Let this guy learn, let
him get better on the job. But when you have a.
Speaker 6 (28:17):
Roster this good and a situation as good as they do,
you can't really feed him to the wolves and let
a roster like that die it on the vine.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
So I am super fascinated as to what we're going
to see in this contest. What does koc cook up
for JJ McCarthy. Donnie, I know you are too on
that list of second year quarterbacks that you were talking
about earlier.
Speaker 5 (28:47):
Yeah, I mean, I'm really interested to see what McCarthy
looks like, you know, unlike some of the other guys.
You know, Bryce Young, we saw you know, all of
him the second half. Michael Pennix, we saw a bit
of him towards the end, and we have no idea
with McCarthy. I mean, we can obviously go back to
his college stuff, but I mean it's college. It's kind
of whatever. Like I mean, I have no idea tough
(29:10):
environment here on the road, you know, tough like tough
opponent because of the rivalry there, the familiarness all that
sort of stuff, Right, So I mean, this isn't like
just some layup spot for him to like get going.
So I don't know, are we going to be like
looking at this afterwards and be like, h I don't
know if McCarthy's the guy, and is Minnesota in that
(29:30):
front office being like hmm, Like Rich said, we got
this freaking you know, ferrari of a roster over here,
but we got this dope driving it, Like what the
heck are we doing? At least when we had Sam Donald?
Like if he has to be at least Sam Donald
at least like that is the stone minimum, right, And
then you hope that he doesn't, you know, crap himself
in the playoffs like Donald did, Like that's what you
hope for. And who knows, But if he's not Donald,
(29:54):
which I don't think, is you know, asking the world
of the kid, then yeah, And like you said, is
this one of those things where I think NFL players
they recognize the situation. I think everyone around them on
this team, whether or not they're saying it publicly or not,
understands that this is a very very good team on
both sides of the ball, on the coaching staff, etc.
(30:17):
So if this kid doesn't get off to a decent start,
is Jefferson starting to, you know, say some things, throw
some shade here and there, not get the ball, et cetera.
Is the defense being like, what the hell they can't.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
Score any points?
Speaker 5 (30:29):
We're holding people to fourteen over here? What the heck
is going like? You know that start stuff's to build
because these guys don't have, you know, ages to play
in the NFL. They want to win now, and this
team is ready to go. So the quarterback's got to
be ready to go now. I have no idea if
McCarthy's gonna be able to do it or not, but
we're all gonna be watching, that's for damn sure.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
Injuries were a big question for a lot of the
collective and Brett. We got to start up in your
neck of the woods where you've got a banged up secondary,
and over in England, whenever there's a squad that gives
somebody trouble, they call them the bogie team. This past weekend,
(31:08):
my beloved Tottenham Hotspur once again went up to the
at the Ad and beat Manchester City. We are very
much City's bogie team, and in recent past, the Buffalo
Bills have had a very difficult time handling the Baltimore Ravens.
So you've got an injured Bill secondary, you've got a
Ravens team that keeps putting your face in it except
(31:31):
for when it mattered. Of course, Mark Andrews bro what
do you got here?
Speaker 3 (31:37):
Well, yeah, I bet the Bills.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
Well.
Speaker 3 (31:40):
First of all, the Bills didn't look good in the preseason,
and I was asked this question by several people after
the Bills got pummeled by the Bears two weeks ago.
Is there a reason to worry about this? And normally
my answer to that would be no, because the starters
didn't play, who cares, None of this matters. But as
the injuries are mounting up, especially in the Bill's secondary,
I think it might matter because the Bills don't have
(32:01):
a whole out of depth at cornerback, at cornerback, at
safety two. That was their biggest issue last season. Teams
were able to throw all over them deep and now
I think this is a team that, I mean already
has the worst safety ten and probably in the end
in the NFL, and now could be without two key
cornerbacks for Week one, and they're facing Lamar Jackson in
the Ultimate Circled Game. Like back in Buffalo where the
(32:24):
Ravens gave one away last year for the right to
play in the AFC Championship Game, Lamar is Mico Nuclear
next Sunday night. The Bills. They placed Maxwell Harriston on
IR today. That happened after I sent my list over
to you, Rich, So I mean I don't have to
watch for that anymore to see he's gonna play. He's done.
Trey White, Yes, that Trey White. He's back in Buffalo.
(32:46):
He's nursing a lower body injury. He might be important
to this secondary while while Harriston's out, I don't even
know who's gonna be playing meaningful snaps for the Bills
at cornerback. They do have two great corners in Christian
Benford and Terren John, but the rest of the secondary
has me terrified. That's something I think it's gonna matter,
(33:07):
It's gonna matter next week. I'm really nervous about the
Bills Week.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
One keeping it on the injury front. Mo, you did
not submit this, But this is a man that we've
talked about for a very long time in Matthew Stafford
the weekend at Bernie's. Memes have been flying all off season.
Is he just a plant? Is there a plant throwing?
Are we being fed misinformation? But according to the rams,
(33:33):
he's on track. He'll be there week one. He is
somebody who's played through injury, but a bulging disc for
an aging quarterback. However, on a team who was going
toe to toe and driving on the eventual Super Bowl
champions on the road in the snow, who added DeVante
(33:53):
Adams in place of the rotting corpse that was Cooper
Cup Mo all high kind of be on Matt Stafford
this weekend.
Speaker 4 (34:03):
Yeah, Like, I know, there's a history of playing through
injuries here, but it's never felt more fragile than it
does right now, right at this age with that sort
of injury, which like dude, back injuries end careers. Mitchell
Schwartz hurt his back and it was like kind of
barely talked about in the middle of that Chief season
(34:25):
and then he literally never played another down. I mean,
I don't know, like this is not a situation where
it would surprise me one bit if the Rams were
just ended up being atrocious. I know that Jimmy Garoppolo
like has been decent at times, but I feel like
that was years ago at this point now, I mean,
(34:45):
I don't even know what to expect there, So the
floor could be much much lower than any of us
wanted to believe. And this is coming from somebody who
I was pretty excited about the Rams when I saw
the DeVante Adams acquisition. I thought he was good last year.
Still he's not, you know, top five, maybe even top
(35:10):
ten probably in the NFL anymore.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
But he's still a needle mover.
Speaker 4 (35:14):
I still think he's a good player, Like he's an
above average player.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
Everything is set up for success here, but.
Speaker 4 (35:21):
I don't know, Man, when you are at Matt Stafford's
age and you can't move as much as he can't
move anymore, which we've talked about this numerous times in
recent years. He is highly reliant on the blocking up
front anymore. We have seen him get absolutely buried at
times when the blocking was poor in front of him,
(35:41):
and if that starts to happen, his body could break
down in a hurry at this age.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
I want to believe in the Rams as a dark
horse super Bowl candidates, right, I really do. But there's
like no outcome this weekend or the first quarter of
the season where I would be interested in the future
because of the word that you just said, Mo, it
is just so fragile. When you've got a quarterback with
a history of injury playing with a back injury, things
(36:11):
can change so quickly and at the end of the day.
I guess that's scambling, right, I guess that is the
inherent risk of betting a team whatever they are, probably
in the thirties to win the Super Bowl. But I
believe in the upside of this team. It is just yeah,
it is teetering on a house of cards with this
(36:33):
quarterback and this specific injury. I'll get one more group
out of the way. Brett brought this up. I'll touch
upon it and then I'll pass the ball to Brett
if he wants to talk to it as well. But
it's this Niners wide receiver group and Brett like myself,
Brett more so than me. I think in the best
ball streets, everybody loves Ricky Pearsall second year sird well
(36:57):
Brett's over there shrug, and he's not too in love
with Pearsol. But right now he's the only true target
in this offense outside of George Kittle of course, more
of an inline player, but I'm talking boundary specifically. I'm
not gonna be smirch Juwan Jennings. He's a nice player.
I like him. But where's he at with this injury contract,
(37:21):
phantom ir situation?
Speaker 2 (37:23):
What's the latest there is he playing?
Speaker 1 (37:25):
It seems like this might be it could be going
towards like phantom ir right because of the contract, it's pewed.
He has this really small injury. So they're at an impasse.
Do they just phantom ir him? A lot of question
marks there. So you're looking at a receiver room now
without DeMarcus Robinson as well. Who is just and I
know you guys are out there, like, oh DeMarcus Robinson,
(37:46):
what are they gonna do?
Speaker 2 (37:47):
Like these are like rule of mo.
Speaker 1 (37:51):
If DeMarcus Robinson's not on the pitch, who's his backup?
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Right?
Speaker 1 (37:55):
Who is gonna be out here running routes that?
Speaker 6 (37:58):
You know? How?
Speaker 1 (37:58):
They got to bring They gotta bring my boy Dante
Pettis back. Dante Pettis the goat.
Speaker 3 (38:02):
Oh my god, we're doing this again.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
But Brett, who are they gonna throw? It's gonna be
kittled Piersol and that's it. McCaffrey's gonna have fifteen dumpuffs.
I guess.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
Let me just first say I like Ricky pearsall, but
I don't know that he's ready to be the target
monster they might need him to be in week one.
I don't know what this offense is gonna look like
in week one. A lot needs to come together in
order for this team to be a field goal favorite.
I think on the road against a very good defense.
I'm just not sure I trust this offense until I
actually see it. I mean, McCaffrey we love, obviously, but
(38:36):
dude's twenty nine years old coming back from another serious injury.
How many miles does this guy have left?
Speaker 2 (38:41):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (38:42):
So yeah, I have a lot of questions about this
forty understy.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
I guess in that sense.
Speaker 4 (38:47):
And after they bring in Robinson, I mean, is that
a tell that they just want to come out and
pound the rock? I mean, just like having basically two
starting running backs on the team.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
Do they hate Grendo? I thought they liked Garend. That
whole thing was weird to me.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
I thought as well. I thought, I thought Grinda picked
something up as well.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
Yeah he has yea, yeah he hasn't. He hasn't played.
That could be it.
Speaker 1 (39:11):
Yeah, and yeah maybe maybe Moses, maybe a Mozon's something.
I mean, they went out and they got Brian Robinson. Right,
this was a this These teams can't lie through transactions, right,
those are the times they tell us the most, their
free agency trades and through the drafts.
Speaker 6 (39:27):
Right.
Speaker 1 (39:28):
They can't coach speak their way out of those things.
They're they're out in playing sights. So yeah, maybe maybe
nine ers under sir back on the menu this season
if they're just going to pound the rock, all right, DP,
I thought this was a great way to end the show.
DP tossed out, who will be the over reaction Darling?
(39:50):
We joked last week about the Saints last year. They
were like the overreaction Darling after Week's one and two,
because I think they scored a combined eighty points in
those games. I don't believe in king Koofyac But DP, sence,
it was your question. I will start with you. After
week one, the dust settles everyone is buzzing after a
(40:11):
week of football. Who is everyone going to be overreacting about.
Speaker 5 (40:17):
I think it could very well be the Baltimore Ravens.
And now I know they're already thought of pretty high.
But what if this Bills team is specifically the defense,
like Brett pointed out, just really isn't right right now
in the season, And what if the Ravens just blow
doors if it's like forty to fourteen or something ridiculous.
(40:37):
You know, the Ravens also have this game triple quadruple
circled after what the heck happened last season? Right, So
what if they just come out gang busters and just
go nuts. Josh Allen looks like kind of eh, you know,
it's just kind of a slow start for the Bills,
which I ultimately think the Bills are going to be
a wagon and they're going to be all right, But
with these injuries, with what Baltimore brings to the table,
(41:00):
and Baltimore is a very good team, you know, so
I think, just like now, Baltimore is in the top
three conversation in the conference. You know, it's it's Kansas City,
it's Buffalo, it's Baltimore, it's However, you want to order
those three, you have them ordered in the top three.
What if coming out of it, you know what if
the Chiefs, you know, just have a tougher go of
it playing the Chargers on the road, right, you know
(41:20):
what if things sort of happen elsewhere and then they
just look at the Ravens and like, holy crap, they
just beat the bag out of the Bills. They're going
to the super Bowl for sure. Not that the Ravens
aren't going to be good, but like, we're gonna have
to be like listen, okay, Like that was an anomaly
on Buffalo's side, So I think that could certainly be
the candidate here.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
They've got the Island game effect, that being on Sunday
Night football, the entire nation watching probably twenty million viewers
for a game like that. So you certainly have a
good case there, MO, What about you? Week one is
in the rear view? Who is everybody buzzing about?
Speaker 4 (41:57):
I'll throw two options real quick out there. One that
nobody's gonna think of. I don't think. How about Jacksonville,
a team I'm very low on, and I'm gonna be
pretty happy to pull the trigger in Week two against them.
If they come out and look good on offense. Dream
situation here week one at home against a Panther's defense
(42:20):
that I think everybody expects to be dreadful, myself included.
So yeah, they could easily come out and have a
good game. Everyone's going Liam Cohen, he fixed it. Trevor
Lawrence is back. I'll be ready to fade. In Week two,
it looks like they play at Cincinnati, a team that
maybe we're a little bit lukewarm on, but I think
we all agree could be a contender. So maybe the
(42:41):
Bengals bring them way way back down to Earth there.
And then another one, which is kind of in the
vein that I sent Rich, is the Titans. This one's
the other way where I feel like, absolutely horrific situation,
just on the road. Rookie quarterback Mile High, an elite defense.
(43:06):
This could be like I think a game people forget
about last year Jaden Daniels and Washington. They just go
get absolutely molly woffed by Tampa Bay. Week one, thirty
seven to twenty was the final of that game. I
looked it up and they just got killed. And then
what happens after that? They rattle off seven covers in
(43:29):
the next eight after that, because you know, Tampa Bay's good.
This guy's making his debut. Washington was a team that
everybody thought was gonna be bad, so everyone was like, oh,
crushed by Tampa Bay, just like we thought Washington's awful.
Titans still, I know there's some excitement out there, but
they still have a win total of like six and
(43:49):
a half. So if they look ugly week one, I
think we should maybe be ready to pounce on the
Titans after that.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
I love that take two of us had Tampa Bay
in Survivor last week week one, and we skated into
week two without Yeah, you and I, Brett, You and
I with bowls at home against a rookie quarterback week one. Ooh,
I just I'm driggling right now thinking of us not
like that. Hi, Brett, You're up? Who are we going
(44:17):
to be overreacting about?
Speaker 3 (44:18):
I've I've got another Island game as an overreaction candidate.
I've got a weird feeling about this Eagles Cowboys game
on Thursday. Some wonky things have happened in these Thursday
night season openers. A lot of nerves, super Bowl hangover,
and Dallas has a lot of firepower in this passing game,
So I mean they can find a way to get
a win on a random Thursday night. The fair weather
(44:41):
fans around the country are going to be flying about
the Cowboys, which would be amazing to watch because we
all know how this ends, right, So I could see dall.
I mean, they're only six and a half point in
their dogs, right, I mean that's they're winning this game
about thirty percent of the time. It could happen, and
if it does, it's I think Dallas is is like
the overreaction candidate in Week two.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
That's fantastic. I think the Cowboys are without Michaeh Parsons
are a dead over team from what you were just saying,
because of the addition of George Pickens to this offense,
Dak's ability to get the ball downfield. Yeah, I could know,
Michael Parsons. I could see so many points being scored
in this game. And on that Micah Parson's point, if
(45:26):
he's not playing in this game, everybody is just going
to assume that Philadelphia is going to roll, right, which
would make the Dallas win even more surprising, and then
their Friday victory lapping even more loud and boisterous as
we get ready to see.
Speaker 2 (45:44):
The Stephen A. Smith segments right now.
Speaker 1 (45:48):
Yeah, I mean it's perfect, and I'm going to cap
things off with another Island game. I said it. It's
the most important game of the week for me. Whoever
wins this Minnesota Chicago game. Right, If Minnesota goes into
Chicago and wins KOC, he's just a genius. Took JJ McCarthy,
(46:09):
stuck him right into the system. Nothing changed, didn't need
Sam Darnold. This guy's the best coach in the league.
Minnesota is going to be en route to winning thirteen
fourteen games again, contending for the Division, the conference, and
potentially the Super Bowl. And on the flip side, if
Ben Johnson in his first game beats the team that
(46:31):
won double digit games last year in Division Fixed, Caleb
Williams made this offense hum the boy genius finally got
his shot and was the head coach one to zero
in a city that has just been begging for good
football for years upon years upon years. Whoever wins this game,
(46:52):
I think the hype is going to get out of control.
And on the flip side, because these are two good teams,
I'm interested in the loser moving forward, because if it's Minnesota,
I trust CHAOSI to keep coaching up Dadd McCarthy, and
I don't think he's just going to flatline Plateau be
the guy who played in Week one. I think he's
going to be able to build and become a better
(47:13):
player as the season goes on. Same thing with Ben Johnson.
The one thing that people have said throughout camp is
that this is a sophisticated offense that has a lot
of moving pieces to it, and I don't know if
it's going to look perfect in week one. It is
something that they're going to need to build on, gain
cohesion and get used to playing together. So I'm interested
(47:34):
in the loser perhaps getting a smidge of value in
subsequent weeks. And I really do think the winner of
this game that Tuesday, after an Island game on Monday
night football people are just going to be singing from
the Mount Dots about how glorious they're going to be
this season. Man, that was a fun fifty minutes. I
cannot wait for Thursday next week for us to assemble
(47:58):
our first Circus Sports. It's a million card of the season.
While the kickoff is on that Dallas, Philadelphia game football
is here. I'm psyched. I'm so happy unprofessed this weekend allegedly.
Are you saying we're not going to talk about Thursday night?
Is it week one?
Speaker 3 (48:17):
We might talk about it, we might talk about it.
I mean I think we're not talking about it.
Speaker 1 (48:22):
Well, it's one of those where I mean, no, we're
not talking about it because if they hang six and
a half Dallas plus the hashtag leverage first game of
the season. No, all right, if allow these guys on
Twitter at Brett Colson CEO double L s O and
at Donny Underscore, Peter's at Monora and you double W
(48:45):
A R A H. I'm at rich T Ryan. We'll
see you guys next week. I hope you guys enjoy
the unprofession. It's the appetizer for the main dish.
Speaker 6 (48:56):
Peace
