Vi har vidst i tusinder af år, at vores kroppe har godt af fysisk aktivitet – også selvom det først rigtigt er i moderne tid, at vi har tid og overskud nok til at ‘dyrke motion’. Det var dog længe et mysterium præcis hvorfor, musklernes sammentrækninger havde sådan en gavnlig virkning.
Men i begyndelsen af 00’erne fandt professor Bente Klarlund en vigtig brik i puslespillet, da hun lokaliserede stoffet IL-6, som udgør en central del af den såkaldte ‘exercise factor’. Hun kalder selv fundet et lykkeligt sammentræf, som blandt andet skyldes en mangeårig dansk grundforskning i muskler, opkomsten af ny teknologi og hendes egen forståelse af inflammation.
