Speaker 1 (00:00):
Day twenty seven, thirty days of ham Radio supporting the
AAURL Teachers Institute and to show different things we can
do inside of amateur radio. So yesterday was when Link Wednesday.
We're gonna talk about Thursday event now, but today yesterday
was whin link Wednesday. And I sent an APRS message

(00:21):
from my truck shortly after I checked my win link
emails in the video that you guys watch. Hopefully you
watch that. If not, go back and watch it the
video from yesterday, and one I got two or three
responses to. I sent a CQ message and I said
win link Wednesday, and that's all it said here in
the North Texas area. And one guy replied back and
he's like, hey, got your message or something like that.

(00:43):
And then the second guy to reply back says, does
whin link Wednesday still exist or are they still doing
that or something like that. I don't remember the exact message,
but I'm like, oh, yeah, yeah, for sure they're still
doing win link Wednesday. So send me a win link
email case five HWB at winlink dot org and I
am check out. I'll be checking those later on today,
probably during this video. But today is APRS Thursday. So

(01:07):
win link Wednesday APRS Thursday, and we're going to talk
about that a little bit today. Now, I did an
interview with these guys on one of my live streams
in twenty twenty two. I had to go back and
look it up, so it was about three years ago,
about almost three and a half years ago at the
time of this recording. And I looked and the Facebook group,

(01:28):
which is right here. I'm not logged into Facebook from
this computer right now. The Facebook group is still active.
And I was watching my APRS Thursday video and he
was saying there was like seven hundred and sixty some
odd people in the Facebook group. Again, the video is
three years old. If you look at the Facebook group now,
it's got thirty one hundred members three point one k members,
so still growing. And admittedly I have not done APRS

(01:50):
Thursday in a while. It's been a while since I did,
since I checked into this. I do recall that the
last time I did it, my radio just exploded with
message It just completely exploded with messages. And I got
on the Facebook group, I think, and I was like,
how do you turn this off? Because it was like
two to three days later, and I'm like I'm still
getting messages from this and server thing, which I'll show

(02:11):
you what that is in a minute. And I was like,
how do you turn this off? How do you disconnect
from or how do you stop messages from? And there's
a way to do it, and I'm gonna have to
figure that out again. I don't remember how to do that.
But a fors Thursday is basically a world wide service
for anyone around the world to check in on APRS

(02:33):
through APRS messaging. And I've got a one hour long
video here and I will link this in the description below.
We're I'm not gonna watch the whole video today. Mike Deturno,
k C EIGHTHL eight owl. I'm sorry, k C eight owl.
He starts out around oh, around like eight minutes into
the video. Again, this is a live stream, okay, and

(02:53):
he introduces himself, he talks about it, He does a
brief introduction to APRS, and then he says this in
in this video.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Here, So what is APRS Thursday, Like you said there, Well,
I don't know. It's the day after weddleink Wednesday basically,
but you know, the whole thing about APRS Thursday started
on Instagram and It started with Cody K seven XYG
and at that time a bunch of us were following
each other on Instagram. You know, he was you know,

(03:23):
he was posting things like, hey, you know what I
think he's I think he's radios. We can send each
other messages somehow, you know, and the radio How could
we send each other text messages? And you know, I've
had I've been a ham I've had my license for
about twenty three years. And be honest, you guys, I
didn't give APRS even a second look until about a

(03:44):
year or so ago.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
So he goes on and talks about this and talks
about how it got started on the quote net actually
got started. The first actual net was on April twenty first,
twenty twenty two. This video is from March of twenty
twenty three, so it's actually about two and a half
years ago, not to did I say three now I
remember what I said. Obviously, we're in late twenty twenty
five right now. And this video, this live stream with

(04:06):
Mike K Eightowl was from March of twenty twenty three,
so APRS Thursday was about a year old at the
time of this live stream with him, and it goes
through and it talks about different things, and they talk
about the announcement server an server ans r VR, and
it's announcement server that kind of like stores and forwards

(04:26):
messages one message to many, they call it. During parts
of this live stream here they created a group called HOTG,
which is Hams on the gram because it started in Instagram.
And the A and server will relay a message sent
to a group from one user to all users who
have joined that group. So in order to join the group,
you send a.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
J to.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Jspace HOTG and I think you leave the group, but
I think I think the group is dynamic. I think
you leave the group. That's how you stop getting messages
so often. So but it talks about let's see there's
another and again this is an hour long video. Here
we go. This is the screen I was looking for.
This is an hour long video. I will link it
blow you guys can go get all the details you
want on it. Okay. There are two ways to join
a group on a ns r VR, send a J

(05:12):
command with the group name to join and monitor only
group traffic. So monitor only. So if you just want
to monitor only, you can send a J send a
cq message with the group name, so jspace hotg space
and that's monitor only, okay, l no space after a
two J space hotg send to a n s R

(05:35):
v R and that joins as monitor only. If you
want to send a message, you send cq space hotg
We're gonna do this here in a minute, q space,
hot d space whatever the message. I'm going to send
cq space hotg space thirty days of ham radio. That's
what I'm gonna send. So we're gonna see what happens
like that. And then it says the last line on
this slide right here here says, here's what it looks

(05:56):
like on a YAZUFT five. I'm gonna do it for
my yazu FT five hundred. But here is what it
looks like on the screen of the HT jspace hotg
that's the entire message for monitoring on the left there,
and then cq space hotg space, test space whatever your
message is. Test message was the message on that one there.

(06:18):
So we're gonna do some with APRS Thursday and what
I really want to do. Yeah, he talks to about
different radios. There's so many different radios today. Two and
a half years after this livestream. There's so many different
radios today that will work on APRS and work well
on APRS, and it's really kind of getting crazy the

(06:39):
amount we can do with APRS. APRS was one of
the those so far. I said at the beginning of
this challenge that for every video during this thirty days
of ham Radio that got over ten thousand views per video,
I would donate one hundred dollars per video. So right now,
our third video passed ten thousand views, just like two
days ago. I was gonna mention it yesterday and I forgot,

(07:00):
and that video is the VHF contestation video. Of course,
the VHF contest station video got over ten thousand views.
It passed. It's actually passed about twelve thousand views now.
So the three videos that I have over ten thousand views.
The first one was my one six five to two
Simplex calling out on Fmsimplex. The second one was the
APRS What is APRS and how does it work? That

(07:21):
was a forty one minute long video and it's got
the second highest most views on on this series right now,
which is great. So FM Simplex APRS, VHF UHF Contesting vhfuh.
My two meter sideband video has ninety almost ninety two
hundred views at the time of this recording. Hopefully that

(07:42):
one reaches ten thousand pretty soon. So APRS is a
popular topic, and VHF sideban is a popular topic, so
we're going to be talking more about those in future
videos after this series is over. But since today's Thursday,
and I wanted to do some more APRS anyway, APRS
Thursday just fitting. So we're gonna go out to the truck.
I'm gonna send a message to end server and say

(08:04):
CQ space hotg space thirty days of ham Radio from
my yazoo, my fifty watt FtM five hundred, and then
I'm gonna watch the madness ensue because I think it's
going to explode because, like I said, the last time
I did this, there were seven hundred and sixty some
people on the Facebook group, and now there's thirty one hundred.
I gotta look up and see how to, uh, how
to disconnect this. So let's go. Let's go have some

(08:26):
fun with APRS Thursday. All right, let's do this. Go
into message. I've got five when lenk messages waiting for me,
so we're gonna check when lenk Karen just a bit
trying to get the glare out of the screen here.
All right, so let's go there and reply clear all

(08:47):
edit call sign, and I'm gonna send to a A
N S r v R A N server.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
And now we're going to send too CQ I don't
think case matters space h O T G space okay,
just like that Q space h O TG space. And
I'm gonna put thirty days of Ham radio just like that.

(09:23):
Hold down here Q h O TG thirty days of
Ham radio to a N server transmit. Now we're gonna
wait for the madness to start.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
There we go logged.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Okay, that was quick logged zero nine two five twenty
oh three Zulu time a p R s p H
dot net a pr S Thursday from k C eight
o h L. Now you see it going like that
k C nine b U h R e J question mark.

(09:57):
I don't know what that means to a twenty six
messages sent from the A N server. Okay, there we go.
There's another one. Ooh, that's d x yo eight r
T y R h R op sylvu qth location. I
don't know with all that. Okay, you see all these

(10:18):
messages coming in an another a N server duplicate retry.
I don't know what that means. Requests suppressed. No, howdy
Jason from Idaho, Ah, nice to meet you. I'm Thomas,
Thanks APRSQ so awesome. All right, we're gonna see what
that looks like. I'm gonna have to delete some messages.

(10:40):
One thing I figured out during the Huntsville Hamfest this
year about this FDM five hundred is once it gets
to ninety nine messages, it gets it's full. And it's
not at ninety eight right now. One hundred. Well, there
it is, okay, And I don't know of a way
to bulk delete these and still receiving messages. Now, there's

(11:02):
a way to bulk delete messages on the FtM four hundred,
but I don't know how to do it on the
FtM five hundred, and I asked a couple of people
and no one could tell me. So if you know
how to do that, put a note in the video.
These are all old messages anyway, And I wonder if
these showed up on my phone. Interesting, they don't show

(11:22):
up on my DASH seven address, only on my Dash
nine address, Maybe because it's a CQ message and APR
story doesn't do group messages. E B two B R
A yo eight R I Y yep, several more like that.
All Right, we're gonna let that go and i'll tell
you the result here in just a little bit RF
hopping in for APRS Thursday. Catch me on APRS. There

(11:45):
you go. End of the day donations. We raised about
another one hundred and seventy five dollars as of last night,
making the total six thousand and forty eight dollars raised
so far. So broke the six one thousand dollars mark.
Can't complain with that, still reaching towards our goal of
thirty thousand dollars. Only got a few more days left

(12:06):
and then we're going to do a live stream on
the first Sunday in October. Thank you for the donations,
and we will see you guys tomorrow
