Speaker 1 (00:23):
And welcome to another edition of the Hank Unplugged podcast
of podcast that is committed to being interesting, informative, and inspirational.
On today's Hank Unplugged, I want to address a very
relevant question, a question that is increasingly relevant in the
(00:48):
wake of Charlie Kirk's assassination, and that question is simply,
this is Mormonism Christian Well, why is that relevant? It's
relevant because there's a pervasive narrative that surrounds the assassination
(01:15):
of Charlie Kirk, an assassination that took place in Orum, Utah.
Is that Tyler Robinson, the alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk,
grew up in a good conservative Christian family. And there
(01:37):
are a lot of examples that could be adduced. For example,
Michael Schrmer, who is the founding publisher of Skeptic magazine,
said this, Robinson appears to have been raised in a
conservative Christian home. An American actor Billy Baldwin said this
(02:02):
on X Meet Charlie Kirk's assassin, Tyler Robinson. He is
a white Christian, conservative Republican male with a gun and
then Singers songwriter Bill Madden describes Robinson as a quote
(02:26):
white Christian son of a sheriff. Well, I could give
many other examples, but the truth is this, Tyler Robinson
was raised in a Mormon family, and Mormonism is Hartley Christian.
(02:47):
And to say that is not hating on Mormons. It's
not bashing Mormonism. It's a calm, cogent communication of truth,
a communication of that which corresponds to reality. Now why
(03:10):
do I say that, Well, let me start with this.
I think it is instructive to note that the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, or Mormonism, was
a church birth back in eighteen twenty by an alleged
(03:30):
vision in which two celestial personages appear to the Mormon founder.
This Mormon founder, Joseph Smith, was claiming that all existing
churches were wrong, that every one of their creeds was
an abomination, and that all their professors were corrupt. And thus,
(03:57):
according to the very founder of the Morman religion, all
existing churches are wrong, and therefore Joseph Smith was chosen
to restore, not to reform, but to restore a church
that he said had disappeared from the very face of
(04:18):
the earth, and the Mormon doctrines that evolved from this
alleged vision all serve to compromise, to confuse, and to
outright contradict not only the nature of God and the
authority of Scripture, but the very way of salvation. And
(04:41):
let me try to cash that out in this podcast.
To begin with, While Christians believe that God the Father
is spirit, Joseph Smith taught that God himself was once
as we are now and is now an exalted man
(05:05):
who sits enthroned in yonder heavens. And that's not all.
Mormonism holds to a plurality of God's and they contend
as a faith family that as Man is, God once was,
(05:26):
and as God is, Man may become. Let me say this.
In addition, Mormonism compromises the very nature of Jesus Christ.
I can't think of anything more Unchristian than that. In Christianity,
(05:47):
Jesus is demonstratably the self existent creator of everything, but
not in Mormonism. In Mormonism, Jesus Christ is said to
be the spirit brother of Lucifer, who was conceived in
heaven by a celestial mother and then came in flesh
(06:13):
as the result of God the Father having sex with
the Virgin Mary. It's hard to wrap your mind around,
but that is what Mormonism teaches. And think about what
Mormonism says about the authenticity and the authority of the scriptures. Now,
(06:37):
I always say that contrast is the conduit to clarity.
And in sharp contrast to orthodox Christian theology, Mormons hold
that the Book of Mormon, not the Bible, but the
Book of Mormon is the most correct of any book
on earth, and therefore is the keystone of the Mormon religion.
(07:05):
And they don't just have the Book of Mormon. In
addition to the Bible and the Book of Mormon, they
have two additional authorities, namely Doctrine and Covenants and the
Pearl of Great Price. Let me say something about Doctrine
and Covenants. It is a compilation of divine revelations which
(07:27):
include the doctrine of polygamy and the Pearl of Great Price. Well,
it is the infamous extra biblical revelation used by Mormonism
to prevent African Americans from entering the priesthood. And I
should say something else with respect to the afterlife, in
(07:51):
that no one gets out of this world alivee So
we ought to know what Mormonism says concerning the afterlife. Well,
here's what they say. Virtually everyone qualifies for heaven. Even
murderers qualify for heaven. They make it into what's called
(08:12):
the telestial Heaven. But there are other heavens in Mormonism
as well. There's the terrestrial heaven for those who accept
the Mormon Gospel in the spirit world. And there's a
celestial heaven for temple Mormons. And not only that, but
for those who are sealed in secret temple rituals. There's
(08:36):
a third level of the celestial heaven, or the Celestial Kingdom,
in which Mormon devotees can become gods of their own planets.
And that's why I say all this and much much
more exclude Mormonism from rightly being called Christian, or it
(09:00):
clearly undermines the pervasive narrative that Tyler Robinson was raised
in a conservative Christian family. Tyler Robinson may have been
raised in a Mormon family, but he was definitively not
raised in a Christian family, because the two are not equivalent.
(09:24):
And although building loving relationships with Mormon people, creating the
image and likeness of God is wholesome and good, authentic
Christians must never lose sight of the essential differences that
separate orthodoxy from the heresies of Mormonism. And truthfully, I've
(09:46):
just scratched the surface. Think, for example, of the image
that you see high at top Mormon temples. It's not
the cross, it's the image of an angel called RONEI. Obviously,
millions and millions of people have viewed this iconic image,
(10:07):
but I would dare say that very few are aware
of the significance that Moroni plays in Mormon folklore. So
here's what Mormonism says. They contend that is immortal Moroni
served as the last military commander of what they call
(10:29):
the Knephite nation. I could say a lot about that,
but that is pure mythology. There is no such thing
as a nee fight nation. And then they go on
to say that upon his death, Moroni is resurrected as
an angel, and in eighteen twenty three visited young Joseph
(10:50):
Smith and then divulged the location of golden plates inscribed
in what Mormons codify as reformed Egyptian hieroglyphics. And then
they contend that along with golden plates which were revealed
(11:14):
to Joseph Smith by the angel Moroni. Joseph Smith allegedly
found a pair of magical eyeglasses by which to translate
these golden plates, translate these plates from Egyptian mythography to
King James English, and therefore thereby creating the Book of Mormon,
(11:42):
the very book described by Joseph Smith as the most
correct of any book on earth and the keystone to
the Mormon religion. And yet, despite its alleged divine origin,
(12:04):
this book has been altered some four thousand times to
compensate for poor grammar, for spelling mistakes, and even for
factual errors. And doctrine and covenance is no better in
a chapter. An infamous chapter is chapter one thirty one.
(12:31):
If you read it, you'll find a revelation delivered by
Joseph Smith back in eighteen forty three. This is a
revelation that teaches that apart from plural marriage, no one
can enter the highest level of heaven. By the way,
it's a revelation that was directly contradicted back in eighteen
(12:55):
ninety by a Mormon president and prophet. He was named
Wilford Woodrooff and Woodrooff. This Mormon prophet relegates polygamy to
the afterlife, And what about the Pearl of Great Price,
(13:18):
another alleged Mormon revelation. The Pearl of Great Price is
problematic in that this is the very pretext by which
the Mormon hierarchy excluded men of African descent from the
Mormon priesthood. Now, while the things that I've just now mentioned,
(13:39):
along with other aberrations which I could mention, they pose
a serious threat to the Mormon idea of credibility, But
it's not that from my perspective. It is Mormonism's deviations
from a cential Christian doctrine that ultimately define it as
(13:59):
a non Christian cult. What, for example, do Mormons believe
when it comes to the deity of Jesus Christ. Well,
according to official Mormon doctrine, Jesus is the first spirit
child conceived and begotten by Heavenly Father and one of
(14:22):
Heavenly Father's many many wives, and Heavenly Father subsequently had
many more spirit children. In fact, Mormons belief that even
Satan is one of those spirit children, and that Satan
(14:47):
is the spirit brother of Jesus Christ. And therefore Mormon
devotes claim that Jesus Christ was Lucifer's brother, not only
his brother, but his older brother. And even that is
just the tip of the iceberg. Mormon devotes will go
(15:11):
so far as to recast the biblical account of creation.
Now how did they do that? Well, For starters, they
maintained that prior to the fall, Adam and Eve were
unable to bear children, and thus, according to the Mormon
(15:32):
Pantheon of doctrines, the fall was deemed unnecessary and glorious occurrence.
In other words, when men fell into sin, this was glorious.
Why because by the fall, the preexistent progeny of Father
(15:52):
God and Mother God are now able to receive bodies
and begin an eternal progression by which they too may
become what Father God is already. And as the fifth
Mormon President and prophet Lorenzo Snow put it, you know,
(16:15):
this is one of those things that most people can
remember because it's quoted over and over again and put
in such memorable fashion. As Man is God once was,
and as God is Man may become. And what about
the Trinity, Well, Mormons overtly deny the Trinity. In place
(16:42):
of a triune God. They worship three separate and distinct gods.
And not only that, but Smith taught that God himself
was once merely human, that God himself was once as
we are now as an exalted man who sits enthroned
in yonder heavens. So what about resurrection, Well, believe it
(17:08):
or not, Mormons hold that the resurrection of Jesus Christ
did absolutely nothing but guarantee that everyone, I mean everyone,
regardless of belief, will be raised from the dead with
the opportunity to pursue their own course of salvation. I
(17:33):
can do that in the afterlife. And what about the
end times? What do Mormons believe is going to happen
at the end of history. Well, they believe that when
America's government crumbles, and they believe that is in the
process of happening, the Mormon Church is going to step
(17:57):
in and restore economic secureity and that this economic security
will ultimately lead to the return of Jesus Christ, who
will set up a one thousand year global theocracy, not
in Jerusalem but in Jackson County, Missouri. And then well,
(18:23):
then they believe that they, as Mormons, will subsequently reign
with Christ and everyone will be confronted with Mormonism as
the one true religion, not Christianity, but Mormonism as the
one true religion. And by the way, Joseph Smith alleged
(18:45):
that God had told him when Jesus Christ would return,
and what he was told was that Jesus Christ would
return when he was eighty five years of age, demonstratably false.
So in some Mormonism is hardly Christian. And I would
(19:10):
say it is both unfair and unreasonable for anyone to
assert that Tyler Robinson grew up in a conservative Christian family.
It's unfair to Mormons and that Mormonism, in keeping with
their founder, Joseph Smith, holds that all existing churches are wrong,
(19:36):
that all their creeds are an abomination, and all their
professors are corrupt, and so they've come up with another gospel.
But likewise, it is unfair to authentic Christianity and that
Christians deny the Mormon notion that Jesus Christ is the
(20:00):
spirit brother of Lucifer, they deny the validity of the
Book of Mormon, and for that matter, they deny, or
at least should blanche at the notion that an unrepentant
assassin will inherit the celestial heaven. Now, obviously, much much
(20:21):
more could be said about Mormonism, and I have done
so in many different venues. If you go to the
webitequipped dot org, you'll find all kinds of resources available
on Mormonism. I've also written about Mormonism in one of
my books, The Complete Answer Book Collector's Edition Revised and Expanded.
(20:47):
All I had to do is look up an entry
titled is Mormonism Christian and you'll find at least a
distilled version of what I have just communicated on this
handk unplug podcast. Now, I can tell you that many
people hearing this podcast are going to say that it's hateful.
(21:13):
The quotation often used is this is hating on Mormons,
but it's not. Truth is so obscure in these times,
as well said, and falsehood so established that unless you
love the truth, you cannot know it. It's critical to
know what Mormons believe. It's critical also to be so
(21:40):
familiar with the truth that when a counterfeit looms on
the horizon, you can identify it instantaneously. And Mormonism is
a clever counterfeit of Christianity. Now, I am in no way,
shape or form denigrating Mormon people. Mormon people who are
(22:06):
created in the image and likeness of God. I'm not
saying that we can't be friends with Mormons. We want
to reach, not repel, but it's critical to know what
Mormonism teaches. In some ways, it's the skin of the
true stuffed with a great, big lie. And if you
(22:31):
really love Mormon people, you need to tell them the truth.
I have found, over many, many years of dealing with
Mormonism that Mormons, by and large do not understand Mormonism
any better than some Christians understand the historic Christian faith.
(22:55):
So it's important to know what you believe in, why
you believe it, and to contrast truth an error, because
Mormonism does not lead to truth, it is embroiled in
significant error. And we're not talking about marginal things. We're
(23:15):
talking about the essentials of the historic Christian faith. I mean,
how more essential can it be than the deity of
Jesus Christ, the nature of God, resurrection, what happens when
Jesus Christ returns a second time again. We need to
(23:38):
be so familiar with the truth that when a counterfeit
looms on the horizon, we can identify it instantaneously. And Mormonism,
Make no mistake, Mormonism is a counterfeit of the Faith,
once for all, delivered to the Saints. Thanks for tuning
