And Welcome to our three hundred and second episode of
Happiness and Darkness, the superho Movie Podcast. We'll discuss superhero movies, Marvel, DC,
Dark Horse, Image and beyond. Naturally, there will be spoilers, folks,
especially for this one, so you have been warned. I'm
one of your co hosts, did Nick And it's always
joining my superhero partnering crime mister Keith.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
But this, Hey Keith, how are you today?

Speaker 4 (02:49):
Oh? You know me, I'm fantastic as always. I'm always
up for a good review. And yeah I got Those
are only two buns I have right now.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
I mean, I'm doing good.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
I can't complain. It's only like nine thousand degrees out.
I think Johnny Storm is flying over my house. We
are under a heat advisory here in North Carolina. It
is was at one point one hundred and twelve degrees today,
so you know, a little toasty. So it's nice to
be in here talking about a movie.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Well, definitely, we'll definite.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
You know, keep cool and hydrated, and dear listeners please
do the same as well, especially if you're in your.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
High heat areas.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
The thing is going to get hot today because the
day we are discussing The Fantastic Four First Steps from
twenty twenty five. This was directed by Matt Shackman. The
story was by catwood Ian springer Jeff Kaplan Eric Pearson.
The last three also co wrote the screenplay with Josh Friedman,
while the score was by mister Michael Jackino, and this
movie cost two hundred million dollars to make as we are,

(03:49):
of course in twenty twenty five as of this recording,
and so far has made two hundred and seventeen million
at the box office, and it continues to grow. So
clearly this movie is doing very well for itself. So
getting the general impressions here, Keith. When it comes to
this latest installment, all of the Fantastic Four was the
fourth time the charm it's weird.

Speaker 4 (04:13):
I went in with very minimal expectations, as you and
I discussed last week with that Superman movie or two
weeks ago. Rather with Superman this being the other tenth
pole of the summer, I was kind of like, I
was hesitant with the cast just because I have seen
some of these other individuals in other movies. So I
wasn't sure if I was gonna like him or hate him,

(04:35):
or whatever the case may be. And I will say
I was pleasantly surprised this was a origin movie without
being an origin movie done right. I appreciated all the
nods to all the East Riggs and all the other
characters they had referenced, from Jack Kirby to stan Lee
to you could kind of spin a wheel at all

(04:55):
the Fantastic Four characters in this movie, and they were
It was done right. It was sub in some cases,
like the nod to Jack Caribbean and stan Lee. You
had the original Fantastic forecast from the nineteen ninety four
movie that you and I reviewed, which I thought was
hysterical because I erupted when I was in the movie
theater and everybody thought I was crazy because I saw

(05:16):
Johnny Storm and the thing at the power plant.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
I was like, oh my god, holy crap.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
And everybody just turned to look at me. I'm like sorry,
and you know, I had to go explain what happened,
why it was so important, and again everybody looked at
me like I was crazy because nobody has seen that
classic of a movie from nineteen ninety four. But is
it perfect. No. There were definitely some shortcomings I did notice,
and they were almost distracting at times. With some of

(05:41):
the CGI, it was a little janky. There was a
couple of scenes with Ben Grimm talking with the young
lady with the red hair. I just blinked on her name,
but the scaling looked off. It looked very green screened
in You could see she was the actual physical carecharacter.
And then when you see Ben Graham, he's almost a

(06:02):
flat overlay image. And the same thing happened with Galactus
at different points when he's walking through New York City,
which is crazy because a lot of that was actually
a practical effect. He had a suit that he could
have worn or he did wear. So the fact that
it kind of came out like that was a little
disjointed to me. And obviously the baby had to be

(06:24):
cgi at at times because it's a baby. So I'll
give that one a pass. Well, I watch it again
one hundred percent. Well I recommend it to everybody again
one hundred percent. So all in all, it was a
fun watch.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Well that's great to hear. So I guess that's in
your opinion. The MCU did something right when it came
to me, finally got the Fantastic four movie that we
wanted and deserved, And I definitely agree with you. I
definitely think they did it right this time because what
I appreciate is they tried not to rehash what had
happened before because that clearly had not worked. So they

(06:58):
went back to the drawing board and start fresh. And
I think also obviously the time period and how storytelling
has evolved so much since the early two thousands. And
I remember when we talked about this, how early two
thousands Fantastic four Rise the Silver Surfer was here.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
I really really appreciated.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
I love the cast, I love the score, and and
something it granted are some characters who maybe don't get
to get to do as much and get sidelined a little.
But other than that, I thought to the as a group,
they worked really really well. I really loved the story
and I was just so engrossed in what was happening
on screen. I wasn't even looking at my every now

(07:36):
and then. But I promise folks, I tend to do
this very very rarely. I might open my phone real
quick just to see what time it is because I
know how the run time of the movies and like
how much more is this to go, which clearly means
I'm not a fully fully engrossed or fully involved emotionally
in what I'm seeing.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
But here I really loved it.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
I was very happy with it. And wow, we definitely
have to talk about that mid credit scene as well,
so that was very pleased. And also the thing is
for the most part, it's quite self contained, even though
you do have that mid credit scene which links everything together,
so you could watch this as a standalone, which is
a very rare thing for the MCU these days, seeing
how interconnected everything is. So I also appreciated that and think,

(08:15):
by and large, this only being his second film, mister
Shackman did a fantastic job, no pun intended. So let's
get to our characters on the board. Kicking off with
our first two Fantastic Four members, who of course are
a couple and are now expecting. In of course we
actually do get to see the birth of Franklin Richards.
We have Beedro Bascal as mister Fantastic of course, and

(08:37):
Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman. So what
did you make of Read and Susan in this version?

Speaker 4 (08:45):
I liked both the characters, and as you and I
knocked Jessica Alba in Rise of the Silver Server, Sue
Storm in this movie at a purpose. She did a lot.
She actually carried the film in several scenes, and she
was at a focal point. She is the one that
secured the treaty with the Mallman, and heck even was

(09:05):
the reason why they were able to defeat Galactus at
the end, and I appreciate them showing her power set off.
She is ridiculously powerful or can be ridiculously powerful, depending
obviously on the writer. So I liked that they showed
her really flexing her powers in terms of turning things invisible,

(09:25):
pushing Galactus all, you know, stopping objects from falling. And
then you had mister Fantastic, which I appreciate they used
him sparingly in terms of showing his you know, stretching
abilities when he's fighting the monkey, when he's being stretched
with Galactus, and you know, different points where he's stretching out.

(09:46):
That was a bit of an issue with the original
Fantastic Four when they did Mister Fantastic stretching, it looked
really cartoonish, and cgi this was done so much better.
And to see them interact with each other, especially in
the beginning when he's looking for the iodine and she's
in the bathroom taking the test. She's like, I just
need twelve more seconds and he's like that's a really

(10:07):
specific number and then just keep going back to what
he's doing and I'm sitting there like, yeah, that's about right.
Because for all his genius and you know, intellect and
everything he has, he's just a little upt with the
social interactions. And we've seen that in different comic books,
different stories, and even in the movies themselves. So the

(10:28):
fact that he's like this all the time is a
nice little nod to that. It's not just like, Okay,
he's ignoring Sue because it's Sue. It's no, he's just
a complete flake and he has ten thousand things going
on in his brain. And she walks out and hands
them what he's looking for, and during that entire scene,
he's like, oh, this is super expired, like completely like

(10:48):
distracted by his own whatever he's looking for. So I
like that, And when you saw them together, it seems genuine.
The chemistry was there when they were talking, especially this
in bed when he has redesigned the spacesuits and he's like, oh,
it's just your same same suit. I just made it bigger.
She's like what, and you see her look at him
like she wants to slap him. He's like, I mean bluer.

(11:10):
I mean I made it bluer and bigger. And you
know there's that fun little banter with them. So I
liked that it seemed genuine. It wasn't again, And I'm
just going to keep comparing this to Silver Surfer because
we did it last week, you know, with her with
Jessica Alba. Rather, they just didn't know what to do
with her. They had this weird, like I'm going to
dress up like a I'm not gonna say school a

(11:33):
librarian kind of look going on there, and You're like,
this just seems very awkward and weird, and even when
she tried to use her powers, it was just very
kind of haphazard. I liked the visual representation of sus
Storm's powers in this one. It showed that, you know,
projecting this invisible force field would distore light, and every

(11:53):
time she used it, you saw that effect, and I
liked that they thought that out far enough to be like, oh,
this is what probably happened if we did this. The
one scene that I thought there was a couple of
moments that I thought were a little janky for lack
of a better term, or I don't know if it's
necessarily poorly written or just like a reshoot, but when

(12:17):
he's talking about how he has to let all the
bad things in because he has to figure out you
know ways to defeat all the bad stuff. And her
response is like, well you scared me, and he's like, oh,
I'm sorry. It just seemed like that was from another
story point that they kind of like reshot or cut out,
because the tone in that one seemed a little off.

(12:38):
So I don't know if it was a different shot
they were trying to go for or a different undertone,
you know, theme. But other than that, I will say
I appreciate it. I didn't think Pedro was gonna be
able to pull us off or Vanessa, and they did
a great job.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
I one agree with you.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
You know, I haven't seen that much of Pedro Pascal,
but the things that have seen him, and I think
he was he was excellent in and I think he
was very poorly served when it came to Wonder Woman
the Wonder Woman sequel as Maxwell Lord, because as an
actor he's absolutely great. And I think he did a
great job as mister Fantastic Anda's Red you know aka
Read Richards, because like you said, he does have that

(13:16):
almost squirrel mind where he has so many things going
on in his head to where he's thinking about, you know,
I guess how to stop the next the next threat.
In this case, you know, they're pregnant, so he's going
to town when it comes to protecting this new baby,
this upcoming baby that they're going to be having, And
so he thinks about all the possible outcomes of how
we're going to protect this child while, you know, while.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
It grows up.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
Obviously you can't prepare for everything, but you do your best.
And I love how how we see you read and
even to go through this. And then obviously the concern
of what kind of child is Franklin going to be?
Is he going to have powers? Isn't he going to
have powers? How are we going to deal with that? So,
of course, like any married couple with their first child,
these are maybe not obviously you're not going to question

(14:01):
whether your child will have powers or not, but the
possible worries of how would this child be will it
be born with you know, without without suffering any maladies
or anything like that, So how we're going.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
To prepare for this?

Speaker 3 (14:13):
And I really appreciated that, Not to mention the fact
that in this one, I really like that Reed was
challenged because he's always been you know, we're painted as
the smart well of the smartest men in the world,
and here he finds himself with an almost unsolvable problem
when it comes to obviously giving up Franklin to Galactus,

(14:34):
and if he doesn't, Galactus will destroy the world. And
it seems like an almost a no win situation where
I don't want to give him my child, but if
I don't give him my child, Galactus is going to
destroy the world. And so he see and that moment
where he's like, the logical answer would be to give
Franklin to Galactus, because you know, obviously it's it's the
logical question. But obviously at the same time, it's like,

(14:57):
he's my son. I don't want to do that. And
there's a whole co trust of course with Sue well
obviously as a mother and such as like I'm not
going to give our child up and I'm not going
to have him die or have you say all these
people and like you said, even though she just has
just given birth and so they maybe don't give us
much to do. She is the one who also turns

(15:19):
the tide when it comes to public opinion, because here
we literally see the Fantastic Four going from the most
beloved heroes to the most hated. Was like your guys
are being so selfish. We could give away once, sacrifice
one life to save millions. And it's Sue who comes
up with that great stirring speech that changes the whole
thing and makes people understand what they're trying to do.

(15:40):
And then of course, obviously Read comes up with that
great idea first of moving the earth. And I thought
that was the truth was going to happen because of
what we've seen in the post credit scene in Thunderbolts,
but that was not the case. And so yeah, and
like you said, the interaction was so good. I could
literally feel these two had been married for a while
and so had had those there's experiences, and they really

(16:01):
felt like a family when it came to Sue, like
completely different from what we've seen in the past. Like
you mentioned with Jessica Albert, I felt the strength, I
felt the resilience, and I also felt I also felt
some parallels with Wonder when it came to being super
super protective of her children, and he was very much
the same case. I think the two could very much

(16:23):
compare notes because ultimately I think it is her maternal
instinct and her love for her child that literally makes
her go over the the you know, over the top,
and ultimately be the one to defeat Galactus.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
So I really really appreciate that, really like that.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
I know some folks weren't particularly happy with the fact
that she was stuck with just being a mom, but
I thought that was wonderful. That shows you what a
mother is prepared to do in order to save her child. Yes,
the Silver Surf of course sacrificed herself ultimately, but it
was Sue who literally brought Galactus to where they had
where he had to be in order to send him
out into another dimension. So to both these these people,

(17:01):
I think the stellustell a job. So let's get to
the other half of our superhero team. We have Ebin
moss Bacharach as the Thing and Joseph Quinn, Yes that
Joseph Quinn, I lead from Stranger Things fame, as of
course Johnny Storm the Human Torch.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
So what did you make of these two guys.

Speaker 4 (17:21):
It's gonna sound weird, but I wish we had a
little bit more of Ben Grimm doing the Thing type activities.
The only time you really see him flex's muscle is
in the beginning when he picks up the car and
he's you know, messing around with the kids, and then
occasionally you see him do some strong man stuff, and
then at the very end when he fights Galactus. It

(17:44):
just seemed like he was very underutilized. And then they
had that really annoying joke of saying it's clabboring time
through the entire movie. It was funny the first time,
and then they just kept going with it and kept
going with it, and it's like, oh my god, will
you please stop? And I get it. Johnny was egging
him on because he knows that Ben Grim hates that,

(18:04):
and yet we don't get Ben I'm sorry, we don't
get Johnny Storm saying flame on it once in this
entire movie. I'm like, wait, wait, we harp on one
stupid catch phrase, but we don't harp on the other
stupid catchphrase. Like it just seemed a little one sided.
With that being said, I did appreciate the interactions with
the two of them. It was done much better than

(18:26):
Rising the Silver Surfer. The two of them just seem
like they were always picking on each other, and Rise
of the Silver Surfer in this one they did. They
had some little, you know, goofs on each other, but
you know, by and large, as you like to say,
they had really good chemistry with each other. When the
power goes out and Ben's got this stubble going on,
and Johnny's like, oh, yeah, I like the beard. It

(18:47):
looks good. And seeing that reminded me of some of
the old images from the Fantastic Four where the thing
kind of starts to grow these little bumps and horns
and everything, and he gets kind of a little bit disfigured.
I like the fact that it's actually just his hair growing.
So it made me chuckle a little bit. And when
he does have the beard, it's like, oh, that makes sense,

(19:08):
And that reminds me or is reminiscent of a Fantastic
Four story where they do they show Ben aging and
he's growing a beard, and eventually he's got a beard
down to the floor. So I like this. I liked
that that was a reference, or maybe not even on purpose,
but they referenced that, and I was like, oh, okay,
I know where that's from. So and the fact that

(19:30):
neither one of them are the village idiots like they
were in Rise of the Silver Surfer in the original
Fantastic Four, they just seem like two I'm not gonna
say bumbling idiots, but Ben Grimm didn't seem like he
had a good hat on his shoulders, and Johnny was
just trying to always sell the Fantastic four to everybody
where in here. They show you they're test pilots, they're

(19:50):
part of this the organization I'm assuming it was supposed
to be NASA. You know, they're all, you know, highly
decorated individuals and intelligence. So I like that they all
got the fla to that muscle in this movie, and
the fact that Johnny was able to decipher the alien
language and then Ben got to fly the ship, so
that it showed each one of their strengths in different

(20:12):
aspects at different points in time.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
I totally agree with you.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
That was the thing I appreciate the most, which I'm
glad we did not get get a repetition of compared
to previous iterations, as in, these two are just as
smart as read or Sue, and that they can do
the work when it comes to the science y stuff,
and they're not simply there to keep bickering at each other.
Not the two kids in the back continuously screaming and

(20:39):
yelling and having an argument, whereas the adults are Sue
and read here. They are there, They're mature, they're there
the intelligent, and they bring some to the team other
than their physical powers. Other than, of course, you know,
obviously Johnny having being able to fly and shoot fire
or the Thing being just a physical physical So I

(21:00):
really appreciate that they they got to contribute to to
the main mission, even through their brain power as well.
And of course how different they are as characters compared
to what we'd seen in Rise of Silver Surfer, as
in the Thing was not as gruff and grumpy. He
seemed much more again mature and just did his thing, no,

(21:22):
but intended walking around his old neighborhood, you know, making
giving the kids a smile, lifting cars and just having
having a ball. And very rarely did we ever see
Johnny and Ben have an argument. Like you said, the
only real, real sort of running joke was say it then,
you know, and kept kept trying to throw get him
to say clobbering. It's clobbering time, because as you said,

(21:45):
the Thing hates the fact they created that catchhrase for
the anime, the the fake animated series that we have
going on, which was rather fun, I found, but they
just seemed so much more grounded. And also the fact
that john was not as was portrayed as much more
once again less immature. He's not chasing every single skirt

(22:06):
that he can see. On the contrary, even though we
actually hear Sue say he's single, ladies and such, he.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
Doesn't have that.

Speaker 3 (22:15):
He isn't carrying on that whole playboy attitude that Chris
Evans did. Granted, also, these are two very different actors.
You know, Joseph, you know, is a decent looking man.
I'm not saying he isn't, but they decide to not
go with that angle. And I think it also benefits
the film that he's not hopping in bed with every
other woman that he can find and seems so selfish

(22:36):
and cares only about his image and like you said,
trying to get sponsors for the team.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
So I really love that.

Speaker 3 (22:43):
And I also appreciated they gave Johnny the great moment
to shine in his confrontation with Shalli Bowl when it
came to that, when it comes that great moment and
a very very heart wrenching, was gut wrenching moment when
he gets her to hear the screams of all those
who died on the planets of which she was a

(23:03):
herald of, rather alerted Galactus to and that really, you know,
obviously turns the tables and causes Shallibl to then behave
the way she does later i e. Literally pushing Galactus
into the portal. So that was something I really liked,
and it was kind of fun that they had that.
Johnny was kind of kind of playing a little bit
of a banter with her, you know, it's like, oh,

(23:25):
you know, there's a sexy, sexy alien woman.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
But it was great. It was fun.

Speaker 3 (23:30):
And also we got to see them go to space.
That was fantastic. I was so happy to see that
we got them to sea pilot this spaceship and them
all doing something on it, you know, like Johnny trying
to shoot at Schallibawl to kind of knock her off.
And I can't say enough great things about that, and
how we literally saw them work as a team. It
wasn't just a dysfunctional family. You felt this was. They

(23:53):
did have their issues of course from time time, like
any family does, but they weren't constant each other's throats.
They were really you could really feel this this is
a family. When they get along, they get along rate
and someons they will have falling out, but you could
feel that there was a unity there. And so I
can't say enough great things to the writers and to
our director for giving us there, as I said before,

(24:14):
the family and the original team that we deserved. So
I guess then let's round off our characters with the
devourer of worlds and his herald. We have Ralph Ainson
as Galactus and Julia Garner as Shalliball, the Silver Surfer.
So Keith, I'm sure that you know, of course that
Shalliball actually does exist, so we do have a female

(24:35):
silver Surfer. But what do you make of the fact
that when do you make of these two and the
fact that we got Shalliball over the og silver Surfer
over Nora and Rad.

Speaker 4 (24:45):
I was fine with it just because of the fact
that in the beginning of the movie, when they tell
you what universe this is, it's not the main Marvel universe.
This is eight to eight. So this entire universe is
different than what everybody's expecting. So the fact that we
didn't get nooron Rad is fine. The she does become
a Herald of Galactus at a point after nooron Rad

(25:09):
had been the Surfer, so it's still continuity. Wise, is
still technically valid. For all we know, norton Rad could
still be the Silver Surfer and he has just gone
off and done something else. He has changed his mind.
And now where that is where she comes in. We
don't you know, that's not necessarily out of the picture.
They just started the point at her taking over as

(25:33):
the Silver Surfer, her giving up because you see in
the flashback, as Sue does, she does it because of
her child. Well, odds are good. Norton Rad is the
father of said child, and we don't know where he is,
so potentially he could have been a surfer and gotten
killed or stuck in a prison somewhere or who knows what.

(25:55):
And Glactus came back and recruited her again, same place
in it, same you know, individuals, you know. So I'm
fine with that. I know the Internet went completely bonkers,
but you know, and I hesitate, but I will say
the CGI was a little wonky. I actually did like

(26:17):
the Silver Surfer's appearance in terms of how they did
design him and rises a Silver Surfer. I'm not saying
she the actress who played her, is bad I'm just
saying the CGI was done poorly with her, So it's
like at a confused listeners, I'm saying I do like her,

(26:37):
I just liked his design a little bit better. So
that being said, with her interactions with Galactus, they were
very minimal. My I guess, for lack of a better term,
issue with her is she comes to Earth and says,
I have universe and has passed all these other planets

(27:04):
in our Solar system, and she goes straight to Earth,
and she doesn't explain why, like why did you not
take Mars or why did you not take Saturn or
some other planet or hell, all of the planets and
then come to Earth, like what made you skip and
go right to hear? And that's where some of the
little backstory or nuances could have been integrated into her

(27:26):
little spiel, as you know, I need planets rich with life,
and that's why we're here, and that's why you've been chosen,
and so on and so forth, because as Johnny points out,
with these other planets, they were rich with life, So
there was a specific reason she came to Earth the
fact that she went from wherever the hell she was

(27:46):
to Earth seemed a little interesting because who knows how
many other civilizations she came across. It's not until Galactus
actually with the Fantastic Four that they realize, or that
he realizes that she is pregnant with Franklin Richards, who

(28:07):
will eventually become the next Galactus when this universe ends.
So it's not like she knew that was the reason
why she got drawn to this planet. She just happened
to like roll the magic eight ball and you're like,
all right, time to go blow up Earth and went there.
The interaction with Galactus and her was interesting. It showed

(28:31):
very much that he is her master and she is
his herald, and there's not there's not a lot of
wiggle room with this he is. They very much do
as I say or else, and you see that when
he I'm not going to say tortures her, but punishes
her a little because of the Fantastic for escaping. But

(28:52):
with Galactus, I'm very like I'm torn because of the design.
He looks like a flipping transformer, especially when he goes
to get out of his chair and his ship. You
see him his armors all like transforming, moving around like

(29:13):
he's Optimist Prime. All of a sudden and I was
kind of like, his armor doesn't do that, it's just
it's on him. It's part of his being. And I
get it. He had the hookups to get the energy
from his ship devouring these planets. I'm impressed his ship
moves slightly faster than the US Post Office because it

(29:34):
took him forever to get to Earth. And for a
guy who's hungry all of the time, you think he
would have made it a priority to get from wherever
the heck he was when they found him to Earth.
Because clearly it was only a month and some change
traveling time. Glacus knew where he was going. He didn't
need his herald to point him in the right direction.

(29:55):
So what took him, I don't know, six weeks, eight weeks,
two months to get to Earth. Beyond me for a
guy who's always hungry, he might want to move a
little bit faster before his food gets cold. So that
was just, you know, a minor little That was the
biggest thing. I kept going, like, why is it taking
so long? He's got the super advanced ship and it
takes them three years to get from point A to

(30:16):
point B. So eh, minor grape.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
I mean, I will say this. I was mind blown
when we first got Galactus, when you know, the Fantastic
will find themselves on his ship and Challa Baal says
to them, you know, Galactus wants to speak with you.
The moment before we even actually saw him. I love
that moment where you literally just see his eyes light up.

(30:42):
I was like, oh wow, I geeked out big time
when I saw that because I think, I don't know
when it calls back to some comic book artwork it
might do, or am I seeing an image like that
of just just his eyes you don't even see the
silhouettes or you see those piercing blue eyes, Like wow,
I literally I'm literally getting goosebumps just talking about That's

(31:03):
how much that moment meant to me. And then I mean,
I agree he doesn't could be a little bit like
a Transformer, But to get Galactus like this, I was
as happy as Larry, and Larry they tell me, is
always incredibly happy. So I was overjoyed to see him
and the interactions between. I think Ralph Ainson's voice is

(31:26):
perfect for this character, and you know, just you could
feel the fear and this was somebody didn't want to
mess with and he was going to be a major problem,
and just that this guy could literally obliterate you with
with with with just a snap of his fingers. You know, sorry, Thanos,
but I really really appreciate that. And yes, you do

(31:46):
feel that he is literally master and commander compared to
obviously his herald, and she's literally subservient to him. And
then you know, we learned the backstory, which is kind
of similar to what we got in the story from
the Rise of Silver Surfer, where Shalla Baul is doing
this because Galactus spared her planet and in exchange, she

(32:06):
becomes his herald and seeks out other planets for him
to devour. And one I thought was curious, is she
you never you think whether she's never really addressed the
moral implications of that to where maybe I understand she
wants to preserve the lives of those she loves, but
she doesn't think about all the victims that have been
claimed instead of of her family, her friends and such.

(32:32):
And it's once again it's Johnny who puts her in
front of her, in her of her responsibility, saying, because
of you, so many other people died. It's like, I
get where you're coming from, because your you have your loved.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
Ones, but because of you, so many.

Speaker 3 (32:46):
People died because Shallibal literally tells him Galactus gets these
places because of me. So it's on me that all
these people have died, and ultimately brings her to a
course to make the ultimate sacrifice. Whether she survives or not,
is anybody guests. I think she probably will, but I
think it very much gives her that moment of soul
searching that, yes, Sir, I did this in my mind

(33:09):
for the right reasons, but how many people paid the
price because of my selfishness in inverted commas, wanting to
spare my people and that other people die. So it
does post quite the moral quandary, and I think plays
in with the concept of you have a moral quandary
like do I give up my only son to save
millions or do I don't and everybody dies? If you

(33:32):
think about it's kind of a first I don't win
situation because even if you don't give away your child,
he's gonna die anyway because everybody's going to be obliterated.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
But still it does.

Speaker 3 (33:43):
I did appreciate that fact we have that moral question,
and shah Shallah has that in spades. But then of
course ends up doing the right thing. And like I said,
I love Galactus. I love the voice. I love him
coming to earth raising a mock and the fantastic forceing
literally powerless against him.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
And it shows you.

Speaker 3 (34:00):
How powerful he is and what it takes for him
to ultimately be defeated. I mean, Sue almost literally loses
her life in order to push him as far as
she does. Granted, as they say, when a loved one
is in peril, people will gain will out of nowhere,
gain powers of themselves. They become super strong out of nowhere,

(34:21):
Like you hear the stories of a mother's child, a
father's child. Even is trapped under a car, they will
rush them. They'll be able to almost lift the car
because that instinct kicks in. And they still haven't found
a way to explain that. Of course, hormones and what
have you, but it is that kind of moment. So
I was very pleased with this. I can see the

(34:42):
issues that you had with the transformer side of it.
I kind of would liked to have seen him seen.
I don't know if we do see this, if he
had the G on his belt or not, that would
have been really cool. I don't think we see that,
but it would have been pro to on the nose
if he had the G on his belt.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
But still I was. I was incredibly, incredibly happy with this.

Speaker 3 (35:04):
And even though, as I said, the ending is a
little similar to Rise of Silver Surfer, because just like
Lauren Rad defeats Galactus, here Shaalibul does the same, I
couldn't Once again, I could not be happier. So before
we get to our mid credit scene, because I really
want your thoughts on that one, Keith, is there anything
else you would like to mention about this film that
we haven't talked about.

Speaker 4 (35:26):
You didn't talk about Herbie the Little Robot BFF Johnny's.

Speaker 2 (35:31):
We love you Herbie, We really do.

Speaker 4 (35:34):
It's funny when I saw that in the trailer, like,
I don't know if I'm gonna like this character, And
as you get through the movie, they integrated him in
such a way that you kinda like, all right, people,
he is the Crypto of the Fantastic Four, except you know,
with better CGI and I like the fact that and
this for random, you know, information for all of our listeners.

(35:58):
The reason why we have this character is because when
the cartoon was aired way back in the sixties, they
couldn't use the human torch, so they had a substitute
of Herbie. They eventually cleared it up and they introduced
human torch, but for that time, they had this little
robot pal in the cartoon and they decided to carry
it over into this movie. I was expecting him to

(36:20):
be floating, but I'm fine with the fact that he
was on this big wheel and kind of zipped around.
Even the cassette face design, I was like, man, I
want one, Like, sign me up, I want one of these. Well,
it could be my new Alexa. I can just have
it run around my house and chase the dogs. I'm
fine with that.

Speaker 3 (36:35):
One of the bets that he's going to be incredible,
that he's gonna We're going to be getting Herbie toys.

Speaker 4 (36:42):
I hope, So if we don't, I'm gonna be really mad.
And yes, listeners, if anybody finds some Herbie stuff, you
can send it to us. I'm fine with.

Speaker 3 (36:49):
That, Please do Yeah, because the character is incredibly toy etic,
so I think we likely will get some either just
toys or plush stuff or stuff all such. I have
a feeling knowing Disney in you know, with Marvel Studios
they like to make merchandise out of their films, so
and Herbie is very much I think of that ilk.

(37:10):
So well, yeah, I enjoyed Herbie too, even though sometimes
his voice got a bit annoying sometimes, but other than that,
I did appreciate him, I'll say, I'll say that much.
So getting to our mid credit scene, of course, four
years later, because it's the Fantastic four Sue, we see
Sue of course with Franklin, who obviously I guess at
this point is four years old. She takes her eyes

(37:32):
up in for a minute to go and find a
book that he wants her to read, and I love
that he's reading stuff like what is it Charles Darwin
and this kind of stuff with at four years old,
because he is, of course of child prodigy. And then
she comes back and sees him interacting with a man
in a green cloak who is holding a metal mask.
So what did you make of our mid credit scene?

Speaker 4 (37:54):
You can go one of about forty seven different ways
with this one. I agree, So we obviously know who
this is supposed to represent. But here's the big butt
boys and girls. You don't see his face. This could
be Doom himself. This could be a Doom Bot. This
could be somebody else because Doom does have children, and

(38:17):
one of his children does wear armor like Doom, so
this could literally be any number of a handful of Dooms.
That being said, everybody's expecting this to be the RDJ
Doctor Doom, which I'm fine with. There's speculation that Franklin
is touching his face because he's going to fix it,

(38:40):
because obviously he was able to resurrect his mother. He
can do pretty much anything he puts his mind to.
He is again the strongest being in the Marvel universe presently,
so you can kind of think that's a bunch of
different ways. This is definitely set up for, you know,
Doom's day, which I'm fine with. It's just I don't

(39:02):
know if I really wanted to see his face or not.
I'm kind of at that, like, well, I'm okay with
not seeing it because that's where all the questions and
anybody who knows who doctor Doom is is sitting here like, oh,
is it the real one? Is that a fake one?
Is it one of the variants? Is it? Like you
literally you can go down this rabbit hole of which
Doom this could be. So I'm fine with that. I
liked his cape and hood being that thicker material, not

(39:26):
like a cheesy whatever felt or that we saw in
Rise of Silver Surfer. I like that little more heavier,
more durable, and it looks like he's seen some stuff.
So if he's more war torn, I'm fine with that.
So I'm excited. I'm like the again, hesitantly excited. Like

(39:48):
I said I had with all the other Superman in
this one, I had like minimal expectations, but Doom is
one of my favorites, and so help me. If Marvel
screws this up, I'm gonna fight somebody.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
I guess we have to find somebody for you to fight.

Speaker 3 (40:04):
I agree, I'm I That's what's exactly my thought, because
of course you do something like this, because then you
want people to go down rabbit holes and speculate all
day long till it's actually revealed who this is. Clearly
it is a Doctor Doom like figure, but whether it's
RDJ or not is anybody's guests, Because you could say

(40:24):
it is. My theory was it is a Doctor Doom
because we know this is a different earth, and I
don't know yet whether it's been We've been told that
rdj's doctor Doom comes from this Earth or is from
our originally you know, our Earth sixty one six universe,
our you know og MCU universe, So you never know

(40:44):
who who could be literally behind the mask. I like
the teas. I appreciate the teesca, and they knew clearly
Shackman and his crew knew what they were doing here,
because like we want people to just lose their minds
and go down and try and bring out so many
theories fan theories as possible till we reveal it. Now,
whether they'll pick this up in the Fantastic Four follow

(41:06):
sequel directly starting there or not is once again anybody's guess.
But I thought it was a cool moment also because
we know the relationship that there is between Doom and
the Fantastic Four and the whole and like you said,
the idea of being there because he knows he's heard
of Franklin's powers, so maybe he is there to literally

(41:26):
fix his face. But I was very excited about this one,
and I kind of appreciate that we didn't have him
kind of turn around and us seeing who That was
so well done. I appreciate that. I like the mystery.
So I guess whenever the Fantastic four sequel shows up,

(41:47):
hopefully questions will be answered. Speaking of questions being answered, well,
I mean the post credits scene I think doesn't really
pose any questions at all and everything's answered there. Did
you like the post credit scene where we literally got
the theme to the fake Fantastic Full cartoon series.

Speaker 4 (42:05):
Oh, it's so terrible, but I get it. It was
in context of to what we saw in the movie itself.
But no, it was so so bad and I could
have I would have been fine without it. I'm just
gonna be honest. If I had known that was gonna
be the last scene, I would have left. Yes, that
they were making reference to all the individuals that they
fought in that one scene where they were standing on

(42:28):
the balcony and all the cops go flying by, and
he's like, oh, I've been tracking some individuals and there's
like twelve different you know, people that are resting at
the same time, and that's essentially who they were at
that end. I'm fine with that. Did I need that cartoon? No,
not at all. Did I could I have used that
twenty minutes back of my life because I had to
go drive home. Yes one, I.

Speaker 3 (42:49):
Mean yes, it was fun because obviously it's a call
back to those old school superhero cartoons, be it super Friends,
the old school Spider Man cartoons, or Hulk cartoons. So
I appreciated the spirits this is what we're doing. Also
because the time this film is set in, because I
believe it is literally set in the mid sixties, so
it did feel very sixties ish, which of course explains

(43:12):
the the color palette that is used in this film,
which I thoroughly enjoyed. So yeah, I was like, yeah,
it's cool.

Speaker 2 (43:18):
It was.

Speaker 3 (43:19):
It was more if I were to grade this, it
would be a meh, that was something I watched it.
It was kind of fun, You're kind of silly, and
now we can all go home. You had to take
the car to get to grab the subway, So I'm like, okay,
I guess I stayed for this so well because we've
got the important mid credit seeing decide to be silly
on in this one.

Speaker 2 (43:37):
But I don't.

Speaker 3 (43:38):
I don't think I'll be singing the Fantastic theme tune
anytime soon. But I thought it wasn't maybe a nice
trip down nostalgia lane for folks, possibly like you and
I who grew up with cartoons like this one. I
think that was probably what was meant when tended when
it came to showing us this. So let's get to ratings. Then,

(43:59):
what do you give the fantastic four first steps out
of ten?

Speaker 4 (44:05):
I've been thinking about this all day. This has been
kind of eaten at me. But I'm gonna go crazy.
I'm gonna give this an eight point five. It definitely
it does a lot of set up. As you said,
it's also a good standalone movie, and it's bringing us
back to phase one vibes of the Marvel universe, and
I have based on this movie, I have very high

(44:27):
hopes for the rest of the Marvel movies.

Speaker 3 (44:33):
Well, if that can, you know, bring give you more
hope and faith. I think that's a fantastic thing. Once again,
we use the word fantastic so many times during the
course of this episode. Folks take a drink every time
we say that words.

Speaker 2 (44:44):
But I'm so.

Speaker 3 (44:45):
Glad to hear that, Keith. I'm also going to give
us an eight and a half out of ten. As
I was blown out of the water when it came
to say it was not what I was expecting.

Speaker 2 (44:53):
And I always like.

Speaker 3 (44:54):
To have my expectations subverted it for the good, of course,
And yeah, I like you, I'm looking for we have
seen what's next. So definitely a great step in the
right direction. But I think the MCU, at least as
far as I'm concerned, has gotten its groove back in
for the last couple of movies. I think since Captain
America Brave New World, we've started to see a step

(45:15):
in the right direction, going back to what made Marvel
MCU movies good. I know, of course, you know, don't
want to go down a huge tangent here. I know,
of course Brave New World has its problems, but I
felt we would go we were in the right going
in the right direction, and Thunderbolts confirmed this, and I
think this is once again telling us, yeah, they're they're

(45:36):
making the right choices. So I'm also hopeful when it
comes to the MCU moving forward, so getting themto recommendations.
Is there anything you'd like to recommend to the class
this week?

Speaker 2 (45:48):
I'm gonna go.

Speaker 4 (45:49):
Weird just because while I watch this movie, it made
me think of an old Disney animated movie, and you
probably know exactly which one. I'm going to suggest the
Incredibles because they literally fight them all man in Incredibles.
So yes, check out Incredibles one and Incredibles two, just
so you can see the faux Fantastic Four at it again. Uh.

(46:10):
In terms of book wise, definitely check out the Future
Foundation run of Fantastic four. I think some of that's
gonna kind of be a precursor to things that we
may see, especially if the Richards work with Doctor Doom
or not.

Speaker 3 (46:25):
Great to well done for bringing that up, and a
great recommendation come to the Incredibles once again, Michael jack
Quino scoring that movie. So it's a nice tie in
I think to today's movie and that film as well.
And if you can't can't top those recommendations, I mean,
if you do feel like going to go back and
catching the references from ninety four, it's actually in the

(46:46):
Fantastic fur from ninety four. I believe it's still available
on YouTube.

Speaker 2 (46:50):
That's where I believe.

Speaker 3 (46:51):
Keith, and I know Keith correct me if I'm wrong.
That's where I saw it. I believe you caught it
on YouTube as well, Is that right?

Speaker 4 (46:57):
I think so. I think we found it on some
random YouTube channel. You have to google Fantastic four nineteen
ninety four, and you will find a link to YouTube
and definitely check it out. It's not the best quality,
it's not the worst quality. It is very much a
product of its time and was designed to be put

(47:17):
out just so they wouldn't lose the rights to this,
and they obviously never put it out and they wound
up losing the right. So who knows.

Speaker 3 (47:26):
No, I would agree give it, give it a look here,
so that way, I guess, like Steve Rodgers, you can
understand that reference. So all the references which should flow
throughout this film, so getting to happiness and darkness. Feedback,
We do have some from Aaron Case who writes in
about today's movie, and I love the subject that he
titles this one with what time has it been? What

(47:47):
time is it?

Speaker 2 (47:48):
Say it? Say it? So?

Speaker 3 (47:50):
Aaron writes in, Hello Keith and d J. Nick hey
erin I went into.

Speaker 2 (47:57):
First steps with very little expectation. I like you, Keith.

Speaker 3 (48:00):
The movies from the two thousands are decent entertainment, but
the movies have yet to truly impress me.

Speaker 2 (48:05):
Lo and Behold.

Speaker 3 (48:06):
I walked out of this with a smile on my face, thinking,
finally I do have a few issues, but they didn't
stop me from enjoying myself. Perhaps the best part of
this movie is that it's a completely self contained story.

Speaker 2 (48:19):
There you go, not requiring knowledge.

Speaker 3 (48:21):
Of sixty movies, seven TV shows, and the Holidays Special.
Even our post credits scene merely sets up what comes
next for the First Family, rather than pulling from other
properties I mentioned in the Superman episode. I appreciate the
rise of bypassing origin stories and getting straight into the action,
and here we get a bit of both. I like

(48:43):
the two minute clip show where we see the world
building leading up to the start of this tale, and
the lore of the Earth is fun, not only being
set in an alternate nineteen sixties, but tapping into the
campy nature of superhero media from that era. While going
through the first four years, we see what could best
be described as Vinnen of the week escapades, including a

(49:06):
silly mold man that were they to be more vital
to the plot. In fact, while I started mentally comparing
this sequence to a cartoon, I laughed my ass off
when they actually showed a clip of the sixties cartoon series.
I cannot express how much I love this montage onto
our cast. I'm pretty on board with them. Moss, Baccarach

(49:26):
and Quinn as the Thing and Johnny feel perfect. The
Thing not over the top gruff, and Johnny not some
immature womanizer. Then there's Pascal, who does well, but and
this is just a personal thing, I'm getting worn out
with him appearing in just about everything, kind of like
Johnny Depp in the early two thousands. It isn't that

(49:48):
I think Pascal is a bad actor, but I'm getting
tired of him being the go to actor. And honestly,
after seeing John Krasinski in Doctor Strange, I can't help
but think we missed out on the much better casting.
Kirby I'm not very familiar with, but I really enjoyed
her in this role. However, my first and biggest issue

(50:08):
with the movie is that her character feels reduced down
to being a mother rather than a part of the family.
She starts the movie pregnant, often sidelined for fights, and
then she spends the remainder constantly worrying about Franklin. She
rarely uses her powers until the final fight, and even
then she never gets that big opportunity to show off

(50:30):
like the other three. Finally, she dies, but since this
is a superhero movie, she clearly won't be dead for long,
and of course the power of mother and child is
what revives her. I really hope she gets more time
to shine as an individual in the Inevitable sequel, because
once again I really did like Kirby as Sue looking

(50:52):
at our villains, I loved Gardner as the Silver Surfer.
When she first appears on Earth and gives her speech
announcing the arrival of Galactus. I was completely impressed with
her presence and instantly thought she was better than what
we previously got in Rise of the Silver Surfer. There's
more layers to her character, and seeing her unravel when
Johnny confronts her with the cries of the previous planets

(51:15):
was a great scene. My only complaint is her being
the one to sacrifice herself to stop Galactus feeling like
a slight rehash of the Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Ending As for Galactus himself, seeing him be more than
just a giant cloud means we've already gotten a vast improvement. Yeah,
he didn't have to do much to improve that situation.

(51:35):
I think the CG looked a little rough at times,
but all in all, I enjoyed what we got. Take
care Erin, well, thank you so much for that insightful
and wonderful email. As always Erin, and he makes me
bring up some fantastic points, Keith, was is there anything
you would like to comment on or mentioned When it
comes to another great email from Erin.

Speaker 4 (51:57):
I agree with a lot of what he said. The
only point I think I have of contention with him
is Sue Storm, where he was talking about her not
using her powers. I like the fact that she was
a delegate, she did the Broke Ring, she even spoke
in front of the Fantastic for the Future Foundation aka
the un And when push comes to shove, she used

(52:21):
her As you know, we talk about her, they've joked
about it, the mom's strength when Galactus was coming after
her baby and she literally pushed Galactys across New York City.
He's a cosmic level being that she was able to
move with her force fields. So when she flexed her muscles,
she flexed her muscles. Yes, she overexerted herself and it

(52:42):
wound up killing her. But she probably other than say
Johnny flying around a lot, she was probably the second
most utilized individual of the team.

Speaker 2 (52:55):
I think that's.

Speaker 3 (52:55):
Definitely a fair point for sure. I mean, as we
mentioned in of course this review and but hey erin
you know, as I said, always a wonderful a wonderful email,
and please don't stop writing because we love of course
sharing your great feedback of course with our listeners and
us of course get to read it and hear it.
