Speaker 1 (00:00):
On your Mark, get ready, start broadcasting from California and Delaware.
(00:32):
This is the Hard Rocking Trivia Show and here're your
host Mark and Danny.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
All Right, everybody in podcast land, Time for another episode
of the Hard Rocking Trivia Show. I think we're up
to two seventy five now, so that's pretty awesome, correct sir?
So we want to start off this time. I guess
earlier this week or late last week, the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame put out their twenty twenty five
(00:57):
nominees and there's some real shit on this, but we're
gonna go through uh group grive group nominee by nominee
and talk about whether we think what or yeah, they
should be get in.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Or they're way too early.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, yeah, there's the couple that are definitely too early.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
But yeah, this list, yeah, it's seems like it's a
little better than before, but they're some of the ones
I think that should go in are just too early.
There's so many sixties and seventies acts that should go
in way before these eighties and nineties acts just absolutely
just my opinion. I mean, we're doing a rant and
(01:41):
we bitch about it every year. It seems like every
show is bitching about it every year, and so are we.
So let's let's get into the nominees, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
So, uh, the list I have is alphabetical by bad
name or whatever. But so we're gonna start off with
Bad Company, which I definitely think should get in there.
They had some major, major hits back in the day,
hugely huge band.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Right. The fact that Paul Rodgers is not in yet
is ridiculous. One of the greatest rock singers of all time. Yeah,
I mean, if not for free bad companies, I think, well,
in the States, the Bad Company was bigger than Free
and this has seemed this is like a US centric
rock and roll Hall of Fame, which is kind of
(02:28):
a problem for certain acts as well. We might get
into a little bit later, but I agree with you
one hundred percent. Bad companies should be based on their popularity,
their influence, everything.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah. Absolutely, Yeah, So that's one vote from us. The
next one is the Black Crows, And you know, I
think this is one of the groups that might be
a little too early. And you know, just I don't
really get it why why they're being nominated. I mean
(03:01):
they weren't huge, they were big, I mean, they had
a couple of big hits, but you know, I don't know,
they would not get my vote.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Yeah, they do well, and they're back, The brothers are
back together. I like the Black Crows, and I don't
have a problem with the Black Crows. It's just too
damn early. Maybe in ten fifteen years. Yeah, absolutely, I
think so. They're they're you know, they're not. They don't
have a lot of big radio hits, but they're pretty big.
(03:32):
Touring wise, they do really well. They were supposed to
open Aerosmith all over the country, but Aerosmith had to
cut it short. But they a lot of the people
who like that music that just kind of goes on
and on, you know what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
They have the jam bands.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yeah, they kind of the jam band. People like them
a lot, and they do jam quite a bit. I
don't have any problem with their music whatsoever. I only
really know a couple songs, but they're good.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Yeah, hard to handle.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, they're just too it's just too early, that's all.
I don't have any problem with them. So at least
it's a rock band. It's a step in the right
direction so so far.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, I'll be shocked if they get in on this
boat just by who else is in here. I won't
who else is nominated, but we'll see. I'll be shocked
if they get in.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
Out of this group. I think they're taking eight of them,
so it's all eight, I think, so I don't think
it's five. I've heard as many as eight. So, but
there's some stuff that shouldn't be here at all. But
so far we're off to a good start.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
So looks like there's fifteen on the list, or fourteen,
I guess, or seventy nine fourteen on the list. So right,
all right, the next one I know is going to
get in just because she is who she is. But
that's Mariah Carey.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
You know.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
It goes back to the same old argument. Is this
a rock and roll Hall of Fame? Because she is
not a rock artist in the least. I mean, she's
the whole diva and uh, I don't know if you'd
call her R and B or what, but I just
have a problem with her overall because she's so unprofessional
(05:21):
showing up to gigs drunk. Come on, yeah, I mean,
if you want to get drunk after a gig and
you you're blowing your life away like that, fine, But
have some responsibility to your fans.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
But yeah, there's no doubt she's very talented. She can
sing her But is she a rock artist? Not really's no,
she's a pop artist. But then again, you know the
people who run this rock and roll Hall of Fame,
apparently everything is quote rock and roll to them. So
it's a murih gets a big no for me. But
(05:57):
she'll get in. Yeah, based on what we've.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Said, She's not getting my vote, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
I mean, Whitney and got in, Dolly Parton golly In.
I mean, they're not rock artists. They're talented, for sure,
but yeah, but these knuckleheads put her on the list.
So okay, all right, all right.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Next one is Chubby Checker, guy from the fifties.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
You know.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Blueberry Hill.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
No, that's not that's not Chubby Checker.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
He didn't do Blueberry Hill.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
That's fat. Yeah, same thing. But here here's a guy
in the list that we probably thought was already in there.
I would have thought, so, yeah, he's from the fifties.
Twist right, he did the twist? Right? Yeah, I mean
here's what I thought, because I had to look this up.
He's known for the twist and Let's Twist Again. So
I think it's a two hit wonder. Maybe that's why
(06:53):
he's not on the list. But then I looked up
how many songs he had in the top forty. It's
a lot. It's like, really, I'll name them, you probably don't.
It's funny because most of his songs are based on dances.
All right, here we go, the Class, the Twist, the Huckle,
the huckle Buck, Pony Time, mess Around, Let's Twist Again,
(07:14):
the Fly, the Twist, jingle Bell Rock, which is surprising, huh,
I didn't know that was Chubby Checker, slow twisting, Dancing Party,
Limbo Rock, Popeye, Let's Limbo some More, twenty Miles, Birdland,
Twisted Up, Lody Low Houkatuka Hey Boba Needle, Lazy, Elsie Molly,
(07:38):
Let's Do the Freddy in the Twist, Yo Twist with
the Bat Fat Boys in nineteen eighty six. So yeah,
I just thought it was two hits. I mean, yeah,
all the songs are pretty much about types of dances.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
But yeah, he found his niche, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Yeah that should have been a song the niche, right, yeah,
or the niche whatever. But if then I was thinking, okay, well,
if it's just based on the Twist and Let's Twist again.
Everybody knows those two songs, everybody knows that dance, and
that's from the like nineteen sixty around there.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
So just I think it's the fifties.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Let me look, the twist was a hit in August
nineteen sixty and let's teel it. Yeah, Let's Twist Again
was July sixty one, and everybody knows that stuff. Everybody
knows those dances, and every wedding you'll go to in
twenty twenty five somewhere they're doing the Twist. So just
(08:41):
based on that and the fact that he had a
lot of hits, he should have been in thirty years ago.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yeah, I would have thought he would be one of
the first timers.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
But yeah, I mean we all thought Chubby check Why
is Chubby Checker? Because if you look at the list,
he's the only fifties and he's, well, there's one guy
who's kind of six these but the rest, I mean,
come on, he should go in just based on he's
been around forever.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Well, speaking of the other guy that's from the sixties
is Joe Cocker.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Joe Cocker and I had to look go ahead.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
I don't know. I mean he had the one hit
that was a cover of a Beatles song, which one
was that Little Help from my Friends?
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Okay, that's right.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
I'm not a huge fan, so I don't know that
I would vote for him to get into Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame. I know he's everybody talks about
him like he's just the greatest thing ever.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
But I don't know he was unique, you know, because
I had I looked at There's two people he looked up,
Chubby Checker and Joe Cocker. And I think Joe Cocker
didn't get it, didn't get in for all these years
because he didn't writing these songs. All these hits are covers.
But you know, you remember when uh, the guy from
(09:59):
satting that lot, John Belushi used to do it and
press Joe Cocker absolutely, and Joe he does have some
the hits that I remember, the letter what's the other
Midnight writer? You are so beautiful, which is when he
you know you love? I mean, he didn't write any
up and last one was up where we Belong from
(10:22):
Officer and a Gentleman.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
But yeah, that was a duet with somebody, right.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Jennifer Warrens so he had more hits than we'd think.
I mean, he looks like he had about ten, but
again he didn't write any of them. But was he
a unique singer? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Yeah, you know, if I had to vote, if I
could vote for five people, which I guess you were saying,
maybe we can vote for eight. But if I was
vote for five, he'd probably get one of mine.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
I don't know if he get I don't think he
would mine based on some of these other people. So
right now, for me, the ones we've gone over, for sure,
I would be Chubby Checker and Bad Company right now.
So I only have two, and there's still a long
way to go with some of these other ones. So
maybe he will. Maybe we'll junk the rest of these people.
I don't know, but.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Yeah, or maybe he'd get my sixth vote if I
have sex, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
I'd stick him in the middle.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Ye'd be a Bad Company and Chevy Checker as well.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Okay, so far, so we agree. So far, it's surprising.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Okay, But the next person here would definitely get one
of my votes is Billy Idol. I mean, you think
how big he was in the eighties, man, huge, and
he's still around.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
And he doesn't stink. He's great. Yeah. I love Billy Idyl.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Absolutely, he came from He didn't hurt have Steve Stevens
playing guitar for him.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
But now that was a stroke of genius there. Whoever
put those two together was a genius because that totally worked.
Because Billy Billy Idol was just a singer from a
punk band Generation X that did absolutely nothing here in
the States. We had was kind of sort of popular
in England, but not huge. They weren't the Clash or
the set X Pistols or the Ramones, Generation Xes. Most
(12:02):
people don't know who that was. But when Billy Idol
hit MTV and he blew that thing up, he was
part of that surge.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
With White Wedding oh man.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Yeah, he definitely gets my I still like Billy Idol
absolutely so Rebel. Yeah, you still crank it if you
hear it on the race. I mean I don't listen
to the radio anymore, but if I heard it, I
turn it up. Still good. Absolutely, So that's that's definitely, definitely,
definitely yes for Billy Idol. So that's three three.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
That's three there, both of us. Okay, Now the next
one I think is a complete like critic vote, Joy
Division and Due Order. I couldn't name one song by bye.
I'm assuming that's what one band or I don't even
know what the connection is.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
I think they're two. They're two different bands with a
lot of shared members. Years back they put in I
think the Small Faces and the Faces together is one
and they're completely different bands. This one I think they
share a lot of them. Yeah, this is this is
like an alternate. These guys were big in the altern
alternative scene when alternative rock wasn't even popular. I mean,
(13:16):
but la, Yeah, you could hear them on the alternative
station in the eighties. New Order had more popularity than
Joy Division, but Joy Division came first. I couldn't tell
you one song either, But I know people love this stuff,
but not me.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Well, definitely not get my vote. I mean, they're not.
I don't want to say that the whole Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame is a popularity contest, but it
kind of is it is. You know, if you're one
to get just you know, critical acclaim, then that's a
whole different thing. But yeah, these guys will not get
(13:54):
my vote.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
Yeah, they're not going to go out on a stadium tour. Sorry,
they might play New York and LA and sell out
like the Form or the Madison Square Garden. Yeah, they
would probably do that, but maybe send in the middle
of the country. No, Yeah, I'm not gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Yeah, they're not going to be a normal dome in
Des Moines, Iowa.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
No, which means they'll probably get in. But I couldn't
vote for exactly if I can't name a song from
Give Me a Break. Yeah, I mean I would still.
I mean, they haven't been around forever. Nobody's asking for
him to come back, I don't think, but just my opinion.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Yeah, all right. Next one is kind of on the
fence for me is Cindy Lauper. I mean, she's got
some great songs. She's like and she wrote most of
her songs. She wrote songs for a lot of other people.
So I think, looking at the list now, if if
(14:52):
I get five votes, she's gonna get one of them,
and Chubby Treker will get my number six.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
Hmmm. Yeah, yeah, she came around. She came in around
the same time Billy Idol did. Yeah, she was big too,
she'd be maybe for me. I mean, she's a great singer.
She had a lot of good songs. I mean, if
you put her next to Billy Idol, they're pretty much identical.
I just like Billy idle Moore. But you can't you can't,
(15:20):
you know, sneeze at his career.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
She's a little poppier of course than.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Right, but if you look at the how big they
were pretty similar. Yeah. Yeah, And I think Cyndy Lopper
just played Madison Square Garden, so she's still selling tickets.
Oh yeah, so she's doing okay.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
And she and she was part of the Broadway show
Kinky Boots. I think she wrote that or wrote the
music for it or something.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Yeah, I don't know anything about that, So she'd be a.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Broadway that's going way off of your off.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Of your range. Yeah, she's a maybe for me.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
All right. The next one I couldn't tell you one
thing about never even heard of them is Mana or Manay.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
You said you said it right first time, Mana Mana. Yeah,
this is like they're supposed to be. There's supposed to
be an accent on the second a. These guys. Since
I live in southern California and southern California is very Latin. Yeah,
Mana is huge really. Manna is a stadium band in
(16:31):
in Spanish speaking countries. There there there are a Spanish
rock band, Humongous. I'm surprised they're on this list because normally,
you know, the Rock and Hall of Fame doesn't recognize
bands like this. I mean they put they they sell
out here all the time, multiple nights, but you've never
heard of Manah. Yeah, there's I mean, not my cup
(16:57):
of tea. But should they go in and they've had
all I mean, this is not a new band. These
guys have been around forever. And the rock band. It's
a rock Spanish rock band. They're huge, okay, and they're Spanish. Yeah, yeah,
I think they're Mexic from Mexico. I believe they're from Mexico,
but South America and Mexico Spanish speaking countries huge here,
(17:19):
huge okay, but not my thing when I put them in.
If I looked at the list, I don't think so.
But if they went in, I get it. But most
people don't. But if you're going to start looking with that,
you know, it's just all looking under other countries where
some of these bands that aren't that big in the
United States are huge in other part. Look at Japan.
(17:41):
If you put somebody like there's a band called the
Bees and X in Japan that are humongous, much bigger
than Loudness. Should they go in I mean I think
X Japan has sold like eighty million records something like that. Yes,
but would we hear them in the United States? No,
you wouldn't. Or like Scorpions that we know in Germany
(18:05):
is huge globally in the biggest band from Germany and
still plays sells out a residency in Vegas. Should they
be I'm sure it's one of the art snubs. Probably,
but Manna, I wouldn't vote for him, But I get
why they would make it, all right?
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Yeah, I can't. I have none to add to that
because I, like I said, I don't know. I've never
even heard of them. Yeah, it's not big in Delaware. No. No,
they're not Wilmington, Dover down the Beach.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
No. But if you google Manah and look at them
on YouTube, you see him playing stadiums. Wow. So okay,
I know, surprise.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
All right. The next one never been a fan of
is Oasis. I know they are ginormous, like particularly in Europe.
You know they have all the drama between the brothers
and all that stuff. Hey kind of like Black Crows, huh.
But I've never been a fan of Oasis. You know,
(19:10):
my band played one song that Champagne Supernova song. Yeah, okay, whatever,
Just I'm never been a fan, even though I know
they'll they're critic darlings, so they'll probably get in as well.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
I don't know if they're that much critical darlings because
they were on the ballot last year and they didn't
get in. Really no, they hate critics, they're anti critic.
But I think why people are screaming about them is
you don't realize how big they are worldwide. Yeah, they're
big in England. I think they're playing two nights at
the Rose Bowl here. Geez it, sold it out already.
(19:47):
They are, they're having they got the brothers got back together,
and I think their US tour is sold out and
they're playing stadiums. They're huge, all right, Well whatever, I'm yeah,
I like I said, I think they'll get in, but yeah,
I think I like. I have all their music and
yeah there's one album I really like, and there's another
(20:09):
album I sort of like. But I never really dove
deep into them. They're heavily Beatles influenced Big Time, but
you know, the drama kind of turns me off. But
I think they're good. I don't love them, but I
think I probably might vote for them. Well, we'll see
who else is left.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Here, so yeah, they're They're not getting my vote so far.
My votes are Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Billy Idol, and
Cyndi Lauper. So I have one left, okay, which which
fits with the rest of the bands that are coming up.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
So okay. Uh.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
The next band is Outcast absolutely not rock and roll
Hall of Fame? Are you kidding me? Outcast? I mean,
if if you want to, if you want to talk
about a rap or an R and B or whatever
you want to call them hall of fame, absolutely go
(21:09):
for it. They're huge, I know that, but not in
the rock and roll Hall of Fame.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
I agree with you one hundred percent. There gotta like
I love that song, Miss Jackson, call him Miss Jackson?
Who I in for? W you know that's a I
like podcast, But rock and roll hall of Fame? No,
and to way too early rap and too early but
talented talented but no, not for me.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
All right, next one, which I can't believe they're even nominated?
Is Fish? I mean, I know they took over for
the Grateful Dead and people follow them around like they
used to do for the Dead, but you know, who cares?
Who cares? I mean, does Fish have any hit singles?
Speaker 1 (21:58):
No? Not one.
Speaker 2 (22:00):
I can't name one Fish song. I know the main
guy with Trey Anastasia or something Anastasio or Anastasia.
Speaker 1 (22:08):
Something like that.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Yeah, but no, they are absolutely not getting my vote.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Yeah, a couple of reasons they wouldn't get my vote.
One too early. Do I think they're talented? Yeah, they
can play. Do I like their music? No? Now it's
jam band stuff. I can't stand it. Yeah. Is it
cool that they jump on trampolines and they play. Yeah,
it's kind of cool. But I just don't dig the music.
(22:38):
I don't get It's like the Grateful Dead. I don't
get it.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
I don't either. I don't understand the allure. I mean,
I know it's more of an event than just a concert.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
But right, are they big? They sell tickets? Yes they do.
Oh yeah, I don't know if they sell albums though.
I don't ever see them big high on the charts
for anything. But I could be wrong. I just it's
one of those ones I don't get and it's too
damn early. I'm not into the jam band stuff. Talented, Yeah,
(23:08):
at least at least their rock band. I would vote
for a Fisher over Mariah Carey if it came to that.
I could do that, all right.
Speaker 2 (23:19):
Next one is probably the other. The last one that'll
be getting one of my votes is Sound Garden. Love
those guys huge, Probably the number two band from the
grunge era after Nirvana. But I love those guys.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
You do. Chris Cornell was a great singer. I don't
love the guitar playing in that band, really no, I
mean I do like some of the songs. I love
black Hole, Sun, Rusty Cage I like. I would say
they're probably the third best biggest grunge band. Maybe I
(23:58):
would say Pearl cham in Nirvana would be wanted. Two Yeah,
Sad Garden. Sad Garden, Alison Chain's probably in the three.
Four Are they good either? Good? I just I think
it's too early for them too. But huh, I wouldn't
be surprised. They've been on the ballot before, But I
won't be surprised if they get in.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
But yeah, they would get one of my votes because
I'm I'm sounds like I'm more of a fan, you know,
I do like I think it's Kim Fail that is
the guitar player, and I do like him.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
I don't like his tone. I don't know. It just
doesn't do it for me.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
You don't like his attitude at all?
Speaker 1 (24:37):
No, Yeah, I don't, yeah at all. I don't know.
I just I remember when they first came out with
loud Love and all that stuff, and like this is noise. Yeah,
it's all drop D tuning, which I don't mind, but
there's something I just just didn't resonate with me. But
I wouldn't be surprised that they got in. So yeah,
(24:57):
at least they're better than Mariah Carey, get it? Well, yeah,
they should go in before them. Okay, all right.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
And the last one here is the white stripes. No,
absolutely not. I mean they came up with probably the
biggest riff in the entire world, give them that from
seven Nation Army. You hear soccer stadiums, football stadiums everywhere going.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Uh uh uh.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
And that's that was Jack White.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
But you know, no, no, yeah, my kids know that riff.
But who is that? I asked them who is that
They go, I don't know, but everybody does know that
riff one song Jack White, Yeah, I get Jack White.
It's got some talent, for sure. His wife was the drummer.
She had no talent. She was terrible, terrible drauma.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
Oh she's just a four on the floor. Beat is awful. Yeah,
it's terrible, but it's not It's not even the one song.
I mean at seven Nation Army, it's not the song.
It's us that riff, you know, I don't.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
I would.
Speaker 2 (26:05):
I would challenge anybody that knows that riff to say
to come up with the name of the song or
the band.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
Yeah, I heard they probably torture prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.
Plays White Stripes albums, No thank you, terrible band awful. Yeah,
so because there's so many other great bands out there
and not even recognize and plus again two damn early. Yeah,
(26:33):
they weren't as big as you think. I mean, if
we look at the list of people are on, the
Bad Company was much bigger. Fish is much bigger than
the White Stripes. White Stripes are a critic starling band.
I'm sorry. Yeah, So that's that's everybody in the list.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
So we have my five votes. We go to Bad Company,
Chubby Chucker, Billy Idol, Cyndi Lauper, and Soundgarden.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
Okay, let me see what I would do. I I
would go Billy Idle, Chubby Checker, Bad Company, Oasis, Cindy Lapper.
Just it's between Sidney Lapper and Soundgarden for me and
Cidey Lapper came before, all right, So that's the only
reason I would pick her over that. So yeah, we're
pretty close. We'll see how we did and where they
(27:20):
put five or eight in. But yeah, quickly, let's go
over some of our snubs. Do you have any snubs
that come off the top of your head.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
It's really hard for me to remember who's in and
who's not.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
Okay, I can. I can give you some right off
the bat, starting with the seventies, Three Dog Night, the
Guess Who, Scorpions Sticks, Boston Super Tramp, Just off the
top of my head. Those are all seventies bands, right,
Did then Lizzy make it in? Thin Lizzy? No, Thin
(27:54):
Lizzy did not make it in, So put them on
that list. Yeah, and that's just the seventies. Let's go
to the eighties, Iron Maiden, back to the seventies. How
about Motorhead.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
We can stop talking right now, after Iron Maiden. That's
the biggest load of crap ever, right, Iron Maiden, he's
the biggest metal band ever. He's not in the Hall
Rock and the Hall of Fame.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
Yeah, and look at the most metal band on this
twenty five list, which would be sound Garden, said sound
Garden going before Iron Maiden. I got another one for you.
Ronnie James Dio not in.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
Yeah, he should get in for Rainbow Black Sabbath.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
Yeah, he's solo. Stop. He should have went in with
Black Sabbath. That was a whole political thing, probably from
Sharon Osbourne. He should have been on that list. He
should have been the fifth guy on that list. If
you're going to take me to do I get the
original four. But Dio was a big part of that band.
He kept that band alive.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
I love the do O Sabbath album is way better
than any of the Assie out I mean, the Mob
Rules Neon Knights.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
Yeah, and you know he doesn't get credit for and
especially in the States, because Rainbow Rainbow was bigger than
Europe when Dio was in the band, Which is funny
because Ronnie Dio was an American. But if you go
back and listen to those deal albums with Rainbow, your
mind is going to be blown. They're great. Oh yeah,
(29:26):
because they didn't get any airplay here. Maybe long Live
rock and Roll a little bit on American radio. Uh
man a Silver Mountains. Yeah, those those are the two
Rainbow songs you heard on classic rock radio. But dig
deeper Stargazer, Oh my god, that's a monstrous song. There's
the one about the rainbow, touch the Rainbow or something
(29:48):
like that. That's a ballad. Way before he did the Rainbow
and the Dark thing. He did a Rainbow with Rainbow
and it's really good. So that's just a little bit
of our snub. But there's a long one.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
Just Iron Maiden not being in just just pisses me
off every time I think about it.
Speaker 3 (30:10):
In their stadium global stadium band, stadium nothing, they're like
racetrack size, not stated their festival headliners all with all
over the.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Planet, hundreds of thousands of people coming to see them.
Speaker 1 (30:27):
Yeah, look at the list of twenty twenty five nominees.
How many are these bands are stadium bands? Maybe Oasis
or maybe Oasis play stadiums. Mona plays big venues. But
the rest of these guys don't. I never saw the
white stripes in a stadium or Joy Division a stadium. No,
huh huh. I mean it's ridiculous, but.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
I don't know. Joy Division may be making a comeback. Yeah,
public outcry.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Yeah from fifty year old Blue Hairs. A lot of
those guys. I'm not saying there. I'm not saying they're bad,
but they weren't big. Sorry. Yeah, okay, all right, I'm
all bent out of shape. Now let's take a commercial. Now, Yeah,
let's take a commercial break, and we'll be back with
(31:19):
cover this.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
Welcome back, everybody. I want to talk about some of
the shows I'm working at the Grand Opera House in
Wilmington coming up soon. None of them are Iron Maiden
or anybody hard rock, but some pretty cool shows, all right.
The one I'm working this Saturday night is Elvis Costello,
which he's got a couple hits. You know, watch watching
(31:45):
the Detectives Pump it Up, you know, those are some
songs I like, man, but I'm going just to see him.
I've never seen him before, and so I'm gonna check
it out.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
Yeah. I was never a fan. He was a critic
Starling and I do like I do like Pump It Up,
and I like I do like Alison. He's more of
a singer songwriter type now, So I don't know if
I don't know if he's playing with a band. There's
he playing acoustic. I don't know he's playing.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
I don't know if the impostors are with him, but
he has there's some guy that's touring with him. I
can't Steve somebody I don't I can't remember. But anyway,
doing that Saturday night, of course I'll be bartending, so
I won't to the beginning of the show, but once
once those show starts, I can close up and go
(32:31):
in and watch the rest of the show. Uh. Sunday night,
going to see the Mighty air Supply taking the wife
huh uh she's going yep, I figured that, so got
a comp ticket for that.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
Yeah, I've heard good things about air Supply. I've heard
their band is actually a bunch of old metal dudes.
Really yeah, who needed? Who needed a gig? And supposedly, yeah,
we always people like to bag on him Supply, but
they had a boatload of hits and supposedly they're still
they're still pretty good and the band is good, so
(33:06):
you might be surprised.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
I was looking at their set list. It's like, yeah,
I know that one.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
I know that one.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
Oh yeah, I know that one. It was like when
I saw Chicago, you know, I was okay, Chicago fan.
But every song you're like, damn, I love that song.
Oh that's a good song. Every single for two and
a half hours, you're like, damn that what a set.
The Mighty Air Supply Sunday Night.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Yeah, they look a little they're a little long in
the tooth there, and the little guy. The little guy's
all tat it up now, go is he? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (33:39):
All right?
Speaker 1 (33:40):
So you might meet it for a rock and show.
You never know.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
Maybe, so we'll see uh then next Friday after that,
I'm seeing and you wait for it. Sutton Foster, who huh.
She's a Broadway actress, singer. She can sing her ass
off and she's she's not too shabby on the eyes.
Speaker 1 (34:02):
Okay, is this your idea, your wife's idea?
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Oh no, I'm working at she She went and saw
her a few couple of years ago when she was here,
but she plays in theaters. Last time she had just
a piano player and she's saying all kinds of stuff, but.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
Yeah, this is this is not that rock in there, Danny, No, no, okay.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
But then the friday after that, going to see the
Red Hot Chili Pipers.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Oh good tribute band.
Speaker 2 (34:35):
No no, this is not a not a Red Hot
Chili Peppers tribute band. This is a basically they are
from Ireland. They have three bagpipes in the band, and
it's a total rock band but with three bagpipes. Okay,
And they're actually really good. I saw them a few
years ago. Yes, I sat there for about twenty minutes
(34:59):
watching their sound and then you know, dressed all in
jeans and T shirts and stuff. But then doing the show,
they're all wearing kilts. The one thing I will say though,
is after about I don't know, a half hour or so,
that's enough bagpipes enough.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
Yeah, the bagpipe and the accordion or instruments that should
be destroyed forever.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
But yeah, those are the shows I'm working before I
come out to see Eclipse in Los Angeles.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
Yes, yeah, that's good.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
I've been looking up their set list that they've been
using lately. Man, it's such a good set.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Okay, be awesome. Good. I don't know how many people
will be there. We might be the only two people there,
but hey, I don't care.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Yeah, that is gonna be March sixteenth, Sunday.
Speaker 1 (35:51):
Night at the Whiskey.
Speaker 2 (35:54):
Whiskey of Go Gos.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
So if you even like Eclipse just a little bit,
you're within four hours, come to the show, because I
think this is the only US show. Yeah, come on down. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
The the the dates I've been seeing on that setlist
dot FM website, they're all Overseas.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
Yea.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
But man, the guy Eric Martinson can sing, Oh my god,
he is amazing.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
Yeah. I don't have any that's the next show I'm
going to. But I know the Whiskey just released a
bunch of shows coming up. Jackal is coming, La Guns
is playing two nights. John Carabbi's playing a solo shoot. Yeah,
that's in Like August Richie cottson. The Whiskey always has shows.
(36:44):
It's unbelievable. Nice. But I've seen Michael Monroe at the
Rainbow parking lot because his show is the Whiskey sold out.
But he's playing the next day with a bunch of
other bands. So I'm definitely going to see Michael Monroe.
Never seen him before. So that's the only thing I
got coming up. Nice, So let's jump into some cover this.
(37:18):
Now it's time to cover this.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
Yeah, I got a good one for you. I don't
know that you'll get this at all, but you might
might surprise me and I'll be like, damn it, I
gotta try harder.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
But I don't know. One, let me get this ready.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
Here, This is off an album that I you have
not sent me. I had to go find this.
Speaker 1 (37:42):
Okay, all right, So anything you can tell me about
this before I play it.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Well, you know both well, you absolutely know both bands.
I don't know that if you've seen either one. I've
seen the covering band, Okay, so I don't know if
you I did not. They have not played them three
so I don't know if you have seen them or not.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
Okay, So people out there in podcast land, if you're
not familiar with this bit, basically we're goen we play
like twenty five to thirty seconds of a cover song.
You have to tell us who's covering that song and
who the original artist is. So out there, people out there,
Danny and I have not shared this with each other,
so we don't know what's coming. So this first time
(38:25):
hearing it from me, for her first time hearing it
from you. So let's see if we can get this.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
All right, you got thirty seconds?
Speaker 1 (38:32):
All right to stay?
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (38:39):
Seven words, I'm getting my kids sad? Second ten raising
now song to our thirdday?
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Say send, that's alazy, wait to be free?
Speaker 1 (39:00):
Hellas sounds cool. I've never heard that in my life.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
Not even the original.
Speaker 1 (39:11):
I think the original is the who would I be
right there? Yep, all right? Who that is? Oh god,
I don't even know this is a band or a
solo artist.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Well I kind of kind of tricking me a little bit.
It's a band, but then it's featuring a vocalist that
is not in the band and the vocalist I've never
heard of before. Good band I definitely have been a
fan of for a long time. I've seen them once.
It was awesome.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Good God. American is an American band. Canadian Canadian band.
Speaker 2 (39:51):
Yeah, they're Canucks.
Speaker 1 (39:53):
With a different lead singer on this particular song in face.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
I played a song with the original lead singer. You
would get it in an instant.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
I'm gonna get is it Rush? No?
Speaker 2 (40:07):
It is not Rush.
Speaker 1 (40:09):
I know you're a big fan of rushing their Canadian all.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
Right, I've seen Rush probably seven or eight times.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
Okay, so any other clues here? Says I missed it already.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
Uh well, you were close that it's a Canadian trio.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
Is it Triumph?
Speaker 2 (40:27):
No, it is not Triumph.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
Okay, it was a Canadian trio. Is it Danko Jones?
Speaker 2 (40:36):
No?
Speaker 1 (40:37):
Okay, I'm trying to think of all the Canadian trios
I know. Oh my god, in this band you like?
And do I like them too?
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (40:47):
Why am I blanking on this? Oh my goodness, it's
not Cony Hats. That's a four piece. I've never heard
this song before. It's not Max Webster. That's a four piece,
and you're not a fan of them.
Speaker 2 (41:02):
The song was called slip Kid.
Speaker 1 (41:04):
Yeah. The only reason I knew that was the who Is.
I know that Gary Charone sings in a Who cover
band in Massachusetts called slip Kid. Okay, that's the only
reason I know that. But it's not Honeymoon Sweel. I'm
thinking of all Canadian bands. I know.
Speaker 2 (41:20):
This was on an album. It's not on the band,
any band's official release. This is on a soundtrack for
Sons of Anarchy.
Speaker 1 (41:27):
Really really Canadian three piece. It's not Chilliwhack. No, am
I getting close?
Speaker 2 (41:37):
Nope, you're getting further.
Speaker 1 (41:39):
Oh my god. It's not Harlequinn. It's not Helix. Oh,
it's not Kick Acts. I'm thinking all Canade. It's not
lover Boy, it's not Streetheart, it's not I I don't know.
I have no idea. What's what's the letter? It starts
with hey, hey alias. No, that's a five piece an
(42:05):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (42:07):
They we first, Probably we might have heard them first
on uh maybe the Monsters of Rock or one of
the one of the festivals out.
Speaker 1 (42:16):
In the UK. Is it April Wine?
Speaker 2 (42:21):
No, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (42:22):
That's And there are three piece. I still don't know.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
They were a four piece back originally, but they've been
a three piece for a very long time.
Speaker 1 (42:32):
It's not Anvil, is it?
Speaker 2 (42:34):
It is Anvil?
Speaker 1 (42:36):
Oh my god, I see I always thinking Anvil.
Speaker 2 (42:39):
And the singer is a guy named Frankie Perez. I
don't know if he's on the show or what, but
I have no idea who that is.
Speaker 1 (42:45):
I've heard of Frankie Perez, but I don't know anything
about him. But yeah, where does that come from? It's
from a soundtrack for.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
The soundtrack to Sons of Anarchy, that TV show.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
And Anvil's on it.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
Anvil, Wow, I know idea if you I had to
because I was thinking Anvil. Really that the the Anvil
that we're thinking of Metal on Metal, Butterbust, Jerky Backwaxed,
all those And if you listen to the guitar it is,
you can tell it's Lips playing.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
Where did you find that? Uh?
Speaker 2 (43:21):
I think I heard it might have been on Jim
Florentine's show.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
Okay, so he just played that out of the blue
and he went what I guess? So yeah, wow, that
is that is a deep cut for sure. Wow, Okay,
you had to do.
Speaker 2 (43:37):
Something because you were getting these way too easy. So
there you go.
Speaker 1 (43:40):
Oh yeah, last time you played me a little next
song that I loved and was easy. Yeah, this is deep.
This is why we played cover this and stuff. I've
never heard that and it sounded good too. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
The singer was great. But if I had played, if
if Lips had actually sang it, you would have gotten
it right away probably.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
And it's not really sloppy either, because like kind of
sloppy band sometimes some somewhat oh.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
H they're not. Yeah, they're not known for being tight,
but they're so freaking good live.
Speaker 1 (44:08):
Yeah, I've never seen Anvil. I would if I had
an opportunity, I would go see them.
Speaker 2 (44:13):
I saw them at a little tiny club in Westchester, Pennsylvania,
and it was probably maybe fifty people there maybe.
Speaker 1 (44:22):
And they probably played like it was a stadium, right.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
Hey, they played their ass off.
Speaker 1 (44:27):
That's why we like them.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
The drummer's so freaking good man, but Lips is very entertaining.
Speaker 1 (44:33):
Okay, cool. I always thinking I was paired like Raven
and Anvil together, very similar bands. Absolutely, Now did you
listen to that Raven ep? I didn't listen to it yet.
I just can't.
Speaker 2 (44:46):
I have not yet.
Speaker 1 (44:47):
No, No, okay, but yeah, Raven.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
And Anvil always kind of reminded me of each other.
Speaker 1 (44:52):
Okay, all right, So my cover is something that it's
a band I know you've never seen before. I know
you've heard of them, and I think you'll know the
cover song, but I don't think you're gonna get the
covering artist.
Speaker 2 (45:07):
Okay, all right, well here we go.
Speaker 3 (45:16):
William god.
Speaker 1 (45:19):
Mama, alright, Dan, have you heard that song before it?
Speaker 2 (45:38):
Yeah, that's Brother Louie by the Stories.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
I know that incorrect. Yes, the song, the song isve
Brother Louis. Yeah, Stories were not the original artist, which
I didn't.
Speaker 2 (45:53):
Who's the original.
Speaker 1 (45:55):
You got to tell me the Stories were not the
Stories from what I know, Yeah, that was the big
song in the US, But that's not the original artist.
I didn't. I thought so too until I did some research.
Speaker 2 (46:08):
Oh man, who's the original artist then? Because I have
no idea, I thought it was the Stories.
Speaker 1 (46:12):
Okay, this song the Stories did Brother Louis, and it
was a number one hit in nineteen seventy three in
US and Canada. That's what I thought, and that's what
you thought six months earlier. It was a number seven
hit in the UK by the original recording artist. And
this band is known. This is interesting about this band,
(46:35):
the original artist. They're only one of three artists in
the UK too. I have a hit in every year
from seventy to seventy nine. The other two were Diana
Ross and Elvis Presley. Jeez, it's a funk band every
every year, every year seventy seventy one all the way
(46:55):
to seventy nine. And in fact, they had a hit
every year from seven to eighty four in the UK.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
And it's a funk American funk band.
Speaker 1 (47:05):
No, it's a funk band from Britain England, and I
can if I tell you that there. They had several
hits in the US, Everyone's a Winner and the one
that everybody knows, you sexy Thing, Oh, you sexy thing.
You know, so you know the song? But who did it?
Speaker 2 (47:24):
Yeah, I don't, I don't know who.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
That is the name of the band, Hot Chocolate, Hot Choc,
Hot Chocolate.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
They had a hit every year for fifteen.
Speaker 1 (47:35):
Years from seventy to eighty four in the UK. They
were that big.
Speaker 2 (47:39):
That that's wow. I would never have thought that.
Speaker 1 (47:43):
Yeah, and Brother Louis was a hit, and then the
stories took it and brought it over, which happened quite
a bit back in the early seventies, where one band,
one song was a hit for one band in England
and then somebody else would record it for the States.
Same thing happened with the Nights Chicago Died, Bo Donaldson
and the Haywoods had one and then I forgot the
(48:04):
other one. But yeah, that same song was a hit
in both countries, different artists. Wow, So tell me who
was the band covering that song? Brother Louis and I'm.
Speaker 2 (48:15):
Gonna it's like a total guess. I'm gonna say Rhino Bucket.
Speaker 1 (48:21):
Incorrect. All right. This band was a five sometimes six
piece from England and to me, I saw them live
once and they reminded me of The Faces a lot.
And they're still.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
Around five or six piece from the UK.
Speaker 1 (48:37):
Yeah, they had one or two minor hits on MTV,
but they were much bigger than in England. In fact,
they had to change their name in the States. They
had to add a city in front of their name,
but in everywhere else they would just known by the blank. Oh,
(48:59):
I'd probably give it away.
Speaker 2 (49:00):
Yeah, is it the choir Boys?
Speaker 1 (49:02):
Correct?
Speaker 2 (49:02):
London choir Boys?
Speaker 1 (49:03):
Yep, okay, choir Boys. Wow. From their second album, Bitter,
Sweet and Twisted, they covered Brother Louis. Who knew that?
I never did it?
Speaker 2 (49:16):
Wow? Man, I didn't realize that was a Hot Chocolate song.
Hotcrocer was the original artist.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
Yep, wow, Okay, I didn't know that either.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
We learned something new today.
Speaker 1 (49:27):
Yeah, Hot Chocolate apparently was big in Europe.
Speaker 2 (49:30):
Okay, not here.
Speaker 1 (49:31):
I mean here they had a couple like maybe three
or four, but they're monster. It's like one of the
biggest bands in Europe during that disco era in Europe
was Bonie M. But Bonie M maybe had one hit
in the US. Maybe they're monstrous.
Speaker 2 (49:50):
Never heard of them?
Speaker 1 (49:51):
Yeah, see huge Bonie M, Boneye damn.
Speaker 2 (49:55):
Well that's what you want to call it.
Speaker 1 (49:58):
Yeah, and they and they are terrible too. You look
at watch some bony M videos. Not good. I think
I'll Yeah, I bet you might. You might have to
do that. Yeah, So you're not gonna go out and
buy any more bony M albums or anything like.
Speaker 2 (50:12):
That, Danny, Uh No, No, I mean maybe if you
sent it to me, I might listen to it, but
I'm not definitely not gonna purchase anything.
Speaker 1 (50:22):
Well, I can tell you that's never gonna happen because
I don't own any bony M. Well, there you go,
and fans out there listening to the show are probably
not fans of bonym either. So on that note, we're
gonna leave, have some dinner. I don't know what the
heck we're gonna do, and then we'll be back in
a couple of weeks with another show.
Speaker 2 (50:41):
For you, all right, And that'll be the last show
before I come out there.
Speaker 1 (50:45):
Yeah, all right, Danny Shark tats. There is Virginia Tech tat,
and is Philadelphia Phillies tat.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
Philly's tat. That's that's a new one. Then a base
left tat. I tell you, you get one, you start,
you get addicted.
Speaker 1 (51:06):
Just don't get those.
Speaker 2 (51:06):
Don't get a real face tat here looking at Oh, don't,
don't don't. Okay, I see people have face tats all
over there. I don't see how these people get jobs. Yeah,
I'll have to change my next appointment.
Speaker 1 (51:20):
Then, yeah, I have still have no tats.
Speaker 2 (51:25):
Wow, look at you just fighting the man.
Speaker 1 (51:28):
It's funny. I watch them that tattoo show. I think
it's cool. I think tattoos are really cool looking. I
just don't want a needle stuck in my arm. I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (51:38):
Yeah, it doesn't it. People say it hurts. I think
it really depends on where you get it. But it
just feels like you're getting rubbed with sandpaper.
Speaker 1 (51:46):
Yeah, I heard the really bad places like the ribs.
Speaker 2 (51:50):
The ribs. Yeah, I'm not getting one on the rib

surpride for them, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (52:44):
Nerds rule the plan. I totally get it. And if
she came out to La, you have to take her
to the Harry Potter thing at your Universal Studios. It's
a big deal for Harry Potter people.
Speaker 2 (52:56):
Not me though, but we went to the one in Florida.
It is awesome. It was really cool. If you're into
Harry Potter, I am not. If you're not, then it
really doesn't matter.
Speaker 1 (53:06):
