Speaker 1 (00:08):
What is the Bible?
Speaker 2 (00:09):
What is it worth? Basic constructions before leaving Earth. Life
is full of struggles and it is hard, but we
are made in the image of God. Lord, I have
to appraise you to the moon and back. I don't
see anything wrong with that.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
It's mean you health, it's me you kept, it's mean
you move.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
If it's me you group, it's me you touch. I
love you so much. Oh my Lord, I have to
say thank you.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Open your eyes.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
What do you see?
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Have you inventor with your life lately?
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah, I have something else to say. Welcome to HBES
and dub jaide. Oh lordy lordya to God goes the glory.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
God goes the glory, the glory, glory. All right, all right,
Welcome to HBS and d w J. I am your host,
Sherry Joyce.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Our mission to provide the knowledge that will train sisters
and brothers in Christ, to spread God's love and create disciples.
Our vision to show all resources that will aid in
the knowledge necessary for the building of God's kingdom. The
adversary does not know what to do with those who
possess integrity. We are not human beings on a spiritual
(01:33):
journey on the contrary, we are spiritual beings on a
human journey. Now, with that being said, we will open
this Holy Bible study session up with prayer. So please
join in, Oh Holy Eternal Father, Son, Holy Spirit. It
is once again that we're coming to you, as humble
(01:54):
as we know how, God of the Universe, at the
dawn of creation, spirit breathed on the waters, making them
the wellspring of all holiness. You created the oceans and
rivers and all that dwell within them, and at your word,
the wind and the waves were born. The seasons follow
(02:17):
your plan, and the tides rise.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
And fall on your command.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
In both calm and storm. You all with us on
the Sea of Galilee. Even when the disciples began to fear,
Jesus showed us that he is Lord over the waters
by rebuking the storms, so that all would know that
even the wind and the waves obey him. Heavenly Father,
(02:43):
we ask you to calm the wind and the waves
of the approaching hurricanes of life, and spare those in
its path from home. Help those who are in its
way to reach the safer points of life. Open our
hearts and generosity to all who need help in the
coming days. In all things, and in all times, help
(03:07):
us to remember that even when life seems dark and stormy,
you all with us, guiding us to safety. Thank you
for your continued graces and mercies. We pray these things
in the precious name of Jesus to Christ of Messiah
a man. Time for today's giggle box?
Speaker 1 (03:35):
All right?
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Instead of the John j O h N. I called
my toilet the gem J. I m that way. It
sounds like, you know, it sounds way better when I
say I go to the gym first thing in the morning.
(04:15):
Do you have the complexion for the protection? It is
now time for our life? U.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
Do you know.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
What time it is? Do you know what time?
Speaker 5 (04:34):
You tell it is?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
It is time for Oh?
Speaker 1 (04:40):
No?
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Say all right? Soldomica Moro cities mentioned in the Bible,
specifically in the Book of Genesis Genesis chapters eighteen and nineteen.
That is, according to the biblical narrative, these U cities,
along with three others, Adma, Zaboim, and Bella also known
(05:06):
as Zor, were situated in the Jordan Valley and were
known for their wickedness and sinfulness. The story goes that
God decided to destroy these cities because of their extreme depravity.
Abraham pleaded with God to spare the cities of if
righteous people could be found within them. Ultimately, only Lot,
(05:29):
Abram's nephew, and his family were found to be righteous.
Angels sent by God warned Lot to leave the city
before its destruction. Sodom and Gomorra were then destroyed by fire,
and Brimstone suffered, that is, which rained down from the sky,
completely annihilating them. The story of Sodom and Gomorra is
(05:52):
often used as a moral lesson about the consequences.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Of sin and disobedience to God.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
It also serves as a warning about the importance of
righteousness and morality. The phrase Soudom and Gomorra has since
been a It's became a metaphor for any place or
situation characterized by moral degradation, wickedness, or divine retribution. The
(06:22):
phrase modern day Sodom and Gomorra is often used metaphorically
to describe a place or a situation characterized by rampant immorality, corruption,
or sinfulness. It doesn't refer to as specific geographical location,
but rather a various to various contexts where such conditions
(06:44):
are perceived to exist. In contemporary discourse, different cities or
regions may be labeled as such depending on the perspective
of the speaker. Of course, now it could refer to
places known for high crime rate, moral decay, or controversial
social practices. However, it is important to recognize that such
(07:08):
comparisons are subjective and often influenced by cultural, religious, or
political viewpoints. Therefore, what one person might consider a modern
day Soldom and Gomorra could differ from another's perspective. All right,
blessings to all, and welcome again. I am Jerry, And
(07:33):
this portion of our study covers God announces the coming
destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah Part one. Now, up to
this point, the Lord has not revealed to Abraham what
he is going to do with Soldom and Gomorro. The
three men then set out on their journey, walking from
(07:56):
Abraham's home near Hebron to the city of Sodom. Abraham
walks with them for a time until they arrive at
a high vantage point from which they can look across
and see seldom. From there, the Lord reveals to Abraham
his plan regarding the grave sins of Sodom and go Morra.
(08:20):
The implication is that God would bring judgment on those
people if their sins were as wicked as he had heerd. This,
of course, is a figure of speech, since God already
knows exactly how sinful these cities are. The reason for
this human perspective is revealed in the conversation with Abraham,
(08:44):
as Abraham tries to specify just how wicked.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
These cities must be. Turn God's routh.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
All right, it is now time to open our heart's
minds and souls to the word of God. Our scripture
will be coming from Genesis chapter eighteen, verses seventeen through
twenty three. That is Genesis chapter eighteen, verses seventeen through
(09:11):
twenty three.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
Let's read.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
The Lord said, shall I hide from Abraham that thing
which I do, seeing that Abraham shall surely become a
great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the
earth shall be blessed in him. For I know him
that he will command his children and his household after him,
and they shall keep the way of the Lord to
do justice and judgment, that the Lord may bring upon
(09:44):
Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. And the
Lord said, because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great,
and because their sin is very grievous. I will go
down now and see whether they have done altogether according
to the cry of which is coming to me, And
if not, I will know.
Speaker 5 (10:07):
And the men turned their faces from thence and went
towards Sodom. But Abraham stood yet before the Lord. And
Abraham drew near and said, wilt thou also destroy the.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Righteous with the wicked?
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Allay, Now that we've done that portion of study with
the verses, we're gonna go ahead and get into our
verse breakdown, starting with Genesis chapter eighteen, verse seventeen. And
the Lord said, shall I hide from Abraham that thing
(10:43):
which I do? The Lord is going to destroy Sodom
and Gomorra. Notice now the reason that God is not
going to hide it from Abraham. Four men standing looking
at the city of Saldom in a distance from a
vantage point. One is Abraham, one is the Lord in
(11:04):
human form. The other two are angels, traveling companions of
the Lord on this mysterious journey. By this time, Sidom
has already gained a reputation for wickedness, as we can
find in Genesis chapter thirteen, verse thirteen noticed a thirteen
thirteen iny ways. This verse is another example of God
(11:27):
using human actions, words, or speech to help us understand
an idea. God called out to Adam in the garden
of Eden, even though he knew where he was hiding.
According to Genesis chapter three, verse nine, God speaks as
a man to Abraham even though he already knows how
(11:50):
the conversation will proceed. According to Genesis chapter eighteen, verses
one through three. All right, now here, God poses a
rhetorical question which helps explain why exactly God is going
through this process of appearing to Abraham and discussing soldom.
In short, God plans to make Abraham aware so he
(12:12):
will be all the more convinced of God's power and sovereignty. Now,
this patient process will also emphasize the extent to which
Sodom had fallen. All right, let's move it along to
Genesis chapter eighteen, verse eighteen, seeing that Abraham shall surely
(12:35):
become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations
of the earth shall be blessed in him. All right,
In this verse, Abraham is going to have a tremendous influence.
He is going to influence multitudes of people, including the
succeeding generations. And that is true right now today, as
(12:58):
you read and hear this information, Abraham is influencing us
that we cannot avoid it. In the previous verse, the
Lord to angels and Abraham stood looking at Sodom in
the distance on a high vantage point. That is God
apparently speaking to the angels ask a rhetorical question. His
(13:20):
statement is not a request for information. It's meant to
point out God's purpose in this encounter. Should God hide
from Abraham what he was about to do with Sodom.
The expected answer and the meaning of this comment is
that God has no intention of hiding his plans from Abraham. Here,
(13:41):
God continues to explain to the angels why he will
not hide from Abraham what he is about to do. Abraham,
the Lord says, will become a great and mighty nation. More,
all of the nations of the earth will be blessed.
In abraham words, God has already given his astounding covenant
(14:04):
promises to Abraham, along with his plans for Abraham's future offspring.
All right now, question, why would God now withhold from
Abraham information about his plans for Saldom. This also means
that God's actions against Sodom are meant to carry a
(14:27):
message to men like who Abraham. All right, Now, what
eventually occurs in that city, it will not.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Only prove that God always makes good on his.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Promises, it would also prove that God's judgment on sin
is unmistakable. All right, Now, let's move it along to
Genesis chapter eighteen, verse nineteen. For I know him that
he will command his children and his household after him,
and they shall keep the way of the Lord to
(14:57):
do justice and judgment that the Lord may bring upon
Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. All right,
God says, I better not hide it from Abraham, because
he would get a wrong impression in me. Notice by
the way that this man Abraham had discipline in his household.
(15:20):
The Lord continues to explain why he was revealed to
Abraham his plans for Solomon. In the previous verse, the
Lord repeated that Abraham would become a great and mighty
nation through his offspring, and that all of the nations
of the world would be blessed through Abraham. Now, the
Lord asks that he has chosen Abraham in port to
(15:43):
command his children and through them all of the children
who would follow, to keep the Lord's way by doing
what is right.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
And just in that way, the Lord.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Would keep his covenant promises to Abraham. All right now,
this place is an important context on gods decision to
tell Abraham in advance what was about to happen to Soldom.
All right now, as Abraham pleaded for God to spare
the innocence of Salem.
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Of whom there are.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Virtually none, and seize God's destruction, he would be reminded
of the holiness to which he is being called. Now.
This is the first mention of Abraham's responsibility to command
and train each following.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Generation to keep the way of the Lord.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
All right now. By extension, this same command is applied
to Israel, all right now. This is also one of
the few mentions that God's keeping of his promises to
Abraham will be tied to Israel keeping to the way
of the Lord.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
All right now, we're want.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
To move it along to Genus chapter eighteen, verse twenty.
And the Lord said, because the crowd of Soldom and
Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous,
it is a good thing that God told Abraham he
was going to destroy these cities, because otherwise Abraham would
have gotten the wrong impression of God. He would have
(17:14):
thought that God was rather dictatorial and vindictive, and that
he was one who apparently showed no mercy for or
consideration of those who were his. Abraham would really have
had a distorted and warped view of God. And so
God lets him know that what he is going to do.
(17:39):
All right, having explained why, you know, having explained why,
he will reveal his plans for Sodom to Abraham.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
The Lord now begins to do so.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Apparently Abraham was unable to hear the Lord's words in
the previous verses. Now the Lord speaks directly to him, Abraham,
that is, or whom it is. What the Lord says
is ominous. The outcry against the peoples of the cities
(18:13):
of Sodom and Gomorra is great, and their sin is grave.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
The language used.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
In similar to what God said to Cain. Where the
language used here is similar to what God said to
Cain in Genesis chapter four, verse ten, Your brother's blood
cries out to me from the grave right now. In
the same poetic sense, the cries of the victims of
the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah had reached the ears
(18:39):
of God. Himself, just like that of Abel's blood, the
cries of Abel's blood when Cain slew them. Right now
he was about to execute justice on Sodom and Gomorra.
God's reasons for revealing this to Abraham in advance seems
(18:59):
to have several layers. First, since God well, First, since
Abraham is meant to be the founder of God's Chosen.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
People, who is that Israel?
Speaker 2 (19:11):
He needs to see that God's promises, all of his promises,
are kept. So Abraham needs to see that all of
God's promises are kept. And now this not only means
that the covenant with Abraham, but God's judgment of sin
(19:31):
and wickedness, So Abraham needs to keep this in mind
as well as the covenant he has with God. Also,
the opportunity for Abraham to plead for the innocent of Sodom,
of whom there are virtually none highlights for Abraham just
how depraved that culture had become. And these combined to
(19:52):
highlight God's perfect justice, which is something he wants in
his chosen people to understand. All right, now, we're gonna
move it along to Genesis, chapter eighteen, verse twenty one.
I will go down now and see whether they have
done altogether according to the cry of it which is
coming to me, and if not, I will know all
(20:16):
right now. In other words, God is saying to Abraham,
I know the situation there, but.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
I'm going to go down.
Speaker 2 (20:24):
There and investigate anyway. God never does anything in hurriedly
or hastily, so Abraham now has time to turn this
over in his mind and think about it.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Feel just a few ticks.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
All right.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
And it is also a good thing that God told
him because he did not have the wrong idea of
God and of Sodom and Gomorrow. He was wrong about
many things, but you know he this time he did
not have the wrong idea. And this is one of
the reasons that God is telling us as much as
(21:00):
he is. There are a lot of things that he
does not tell us, but he has told us enough
so that though a man is to be a fool
and a wayfaring man, he needeth error therein all right. Now,
the Lord continues explaining to Abraham his plans for Sodom
and Gomorrow. In the previous verse, God states that outcry
(21:24):
over the sins of those cities, you know, they had
reached his ears. So God explained this to Abraham that
those sins of those cities cried out to his ears.
Now the Lord says that he intends to go down
(21:45):
to the cities and see for himself if such an
outcry is justified.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
All right, now, Both.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Of these are examples of God using human terminology to
more clearly explain his message. The Lord already knows it
exactly what sins have occured, because God is everywhere. At
the same time, he intends to visit the city to
make the case for executing his judgment on them, much
(22:12):
as a parent who already knows exactly what a child
has done says they are going to go look at
the situation. In the following verses, we will see Abraham's
great concern for his nephew Lot, who lives in Sodom
and is in great danger of being swept away with
the wicked people of the city. All right, now, let's
(22:34):
move it along to Genesis chapter eighteen, verse twenty two.
And the men turned their faces from thence and went
towards Sodom. But Abraham stood yet before the Lord. Abraham
is now waiting before the Lord. Now, in the previous verses,
the Lord in human form had revealed to Abraham his
(22:55):
plans for the cities of Sodom and Gomorland. As they
stood at a high vantay to the point overlooking Soldom
in the distance, with two angels standing everybody, the Lord
told Abraham that the sin of the people of those
cities were very great. The outcry of their.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Victims had reached his ears.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
The Lord was preparing to go and see the city
for himself to confirm what he had heard, and by
implication and proceeded, was executing his judgment against it.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
All right.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Now, all of these are stated in human terms in
order to highlight God's point. Like a parent who already
knows what had happened. God had asked rhetorical questions and
speaks of investigation for the sake of his children.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
Now the two.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
Angels turned and walked towards Seldom. Abraham and the Lord
remain where they are. Abraham's nephew Lot lives in the city,
and Abraham is about to question the Lord more specifically
about Sodom's future. The answers he received will not be pleasant,
all right, Let's see how unpleasant they are. Moving on
(24:02):
the alarm to Genesis chapter eighteen, verse twenty three and
Abraham drew near and said, wilt thou also destroy the
righteous with the wicked. What is the first thing that
enters Abraham's mind? The first thing that enters his mind.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
Is a Lot.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Of course, he had rescued Lot once, and now Lot
is again in danger.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Then there wow.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
I think that Abraham had wandered many times about Lot and.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
His relationship to God.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
But at least he believes that Lot is a saved man.
He is asking God what about the righteous? I believe
that Abraham would have told you that he thought there
were many people in the city of Sodom who were saved.
Maybe he could not understand why God would destroy the
righteous with the wicked.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
What a picture we have here.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
The Lord has revealed to Abraham his plans to investigate
the sinfulness of the cities of Sodomonka Morahan by implication,
execute judgment upon them if they are guilty. Now, this
is entirely for man's benefits, since God already knows what's happening. Rather,
by speaking of investigation and conversing with Abraham, God is
(25:31):
teaching mankind by giving us a clearer, unmistakable justification for
what he is about to do. So this lesson is
for us as well as it was for Abraham. I
ain't now Abraham certainly knew of the wickedness of these
cities as founding or as according to Jenis chapter thirteen,
(25:53):
verse thirteen thirteen thirteen, as well as Genesis chapter fourteen
Versus twenty two through twenty three. All right now, not
only would they have had a reputation in the region
for their behavior, but Abraham's nephew Lot and his family
also live in the city amongst those wicked people. All
(26:15):
right now, Abraham is concerned that Lot will suffer the
same fate as the rest of the city if the
Lord chooses to take action against him. This seems to
be his motivation for asking God to spare the city.
All right, Abraham begins to question the Lord about what
(26:37):
will happen? Will they sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
This is a question man is still asked about the
Lord today? Is he just what are the boundaries of
his mercy?
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (26:53):
What will keep him from delivering his righteous wrath on
those who are guilty of grave sin? Huh? As human beings,
we recoil that the idea of those we perceive are innocent,
but as innocent being caught up in God's wrath against
(27:19):
those we perceive as guilty. So we sometimes we get
this idea that innocent people are getting caught up in
God's wrath with the wicked people. But the following verses
will reveal that Abraham desperately wants for the Lord to
quantify his mercy with a specific number, and we'll get
(27:42):
into that more in the next session. All right, So
for now it's time for us to get into our
life reflection. Do you have the complexion for the protection?
(28:03):
It is now time for our life reflection.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
All right?
Speaker 2 (28:08):
Did Abraham change God's mind?
Speaker 1 (28:11):
Of course not.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
The more likely answer is that God changed Abraham's mind.
Abraham knew that God is just and that he punishes sin,
but he may have wondered about God's mercy. Abraham seemed
to be probing God's mind to see how merciful he
really was. He left his conversation with God convinced that
(28:34):
God was both kind and fair. Our prayers may not
change God's mind, but they may change ours, just as
Abraham's prayer changed his mind.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
All right.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
Prayer helps us better understand the mind of God. God
gave the people of sldom a fair test. He was
not ignorant of the city's wicked practices, but in his
fairness and patience he gave its people for one last
chance to repent. God is still waiting, giving people the
opportunity to turn to him. According to two Peter Chapter three,
(29:10):
Verse nine, those of us today who are wise will
turn to him before his patience were us out.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
But for now, this.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
Is what God announces to come in destruction of son
amngemoral port one. It's all about all right now. With
that being said, we will close out with prayer. Heavenly Father, Son,
Holy Spirit, thank you for blessing us with another building.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
Blood from this holy Bible study session.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Gracious God, thank you for your infinite patience that endure
us through every season of our life. Your steadfast love
and mercy sustains us even when we falter and fail.
You wait for us with arms open wide, never wavering
in your commitment.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
To guide us back to your loving embrace.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Forgive us, Lord for the times we have tested your
patience with our stubbornness and doubts. Help us to learn
from your example of patience to be slow to anger and.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Quick to forgive.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
As you are teach us, Lord, to extend the same
patience to others that you abundantly pour out on us.
And moments of struggle and uncertainty, remind us of your
unwavering patience which never gives up on us. Strengthen our
faith and trust in your perfect timing, knowing that you
work all things for our good according to your purpose.
(30:44):
Thank you, Heaven the Father, for your enduring patience that
allows us to grow and learn in your grace. May
we always seek to reflect your patience and our own life,
showing kindness and understanding to those around us. Thank you
for your ten graces and mercy made the words of
our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable
(31:06):
in your sight, Oh Lord, our strength and our Redeemer.
We continue to pray these things by believing, trusting, and
loving You, the Old, Holy Eternal Father's Son.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
Holy Spirit.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
It is always in the precious name of Jesus Christ
the Messiah, we pray.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
