GOD Gives Abraham A New Name

A great many people feel that the seventeenth chapter is the most outstanding chapter of the Book of Genesis. Here God makes a covenant with Abram and confirms His promise to him about a son. He lets Abram know that Ishmael is not the one He promised to him.
In one sense this chapter is the key to the Book of Genesis, and it may be a key to the entire Bible.

God’s covenant with Abram concerns two important items: a seed and a land. He reveals Himself to Abram by a new name—El Shaddai, the Almighty God—and He also gives Abram a new name. Up to this point his name was Abram; now it is changed to Abraham.

Abram means “high father,” and Abraham means “father of a multitude” That Ishmael was not the son God promised to Abraham is the thing this chapter makes very clear. Genesis 17 describes God's appearance to Abram, who is now 99 years old.

Twenty-three years have passed since God first promised to make Abram a great nation and to give to him and to his descendants the land of Canaan. During that time, Abram and his large company have lived in different parts of the region. He has grown quite wealthy, and God has appeared to him several more times to restate and expand on the initial covenant promises.

Still, Abram has only one son. Ishmael, born to him by his wife's servant Hagar, is now 13. Abram and his wife Sarai, who has been barren for their entire marriage, seem to have resisted attempting to have children through other women before the events of Genesis chapter 16.

At this point, they likely assumed that God's promises and blessing to Abram would pass through Ishmael. After all, at 99 and 89 respectively, they were well past the window for conceiving or bearing children. That's when God appears to Abram again. This meeting is different than those earlier encounters, however.

This time, in addition to the familiar and seemingly impossible promises, God also has requirements for Abram. God commands Abram to walk with Him and to be blameless.
Abram would, indeed, be the father of nations. Kings would come from him. To confirm that fact, God changed Abram's name to Abraham.

While Abram means "exalted father," the name Abraham sounds like the Hebrew phrase for "father of a multitude." The land of Canaan would belong to Abraham and his descendants forever.

It is time to open our hearts, minds, and souls to the Word Of GOD.

Our scripture will be coming from:

Genesis 17:1-5 KJV
[1] And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
[2] And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
[3] And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
[4] As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
[5] Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

(03:46):
about side of parenthood with information fromactual experts have an idea, well,
if you do, email Russia alye from USA Today alright. A mother
left her hours old baby on adoorstep of someone's home. A newborn was

(04:09):
found at an apartment complex two yearsafter a different newborn was abandoned there as
well. Twins were left at astrip mall where one died. Stories like
these are constant, but newborn babiesdon't have to be deserted in locations where
they are subsect where they're susceptible tothe elements and could possibly end up dead.

(04:38):
Still, year after year they are. Every state has a safe haven
law, which means there are waysfor a person to safely relinquish an unharmed
a newborn baby without any risk ofpersecution. The laws aren't the same in
every state, so it's important tocheck each state for details. Here's some

(05:00):
things you probably didn't know about thesafe haven laws. Safe havens are not
completely anonymous. While safe haven lawsgenerally allow parents to remain anonymous, meaning
some states won't compel them to revealtheir identity, it's still not completely anonymous.

(05:25):
The law has been around for abouttwenty years and says that you can
walk into any hospital and surrender yourbaby anonymously, no questions asked. But
that's not totally accurate, said MonicaKelsey, founder of safe Haven Baby Boxes

(05:46):
and an abandoned child herself. Sheadded that some moms don't want the face
to face interaction of having to handtheir baby over to someone we'll see.
Cited two cases in Bowling Green,Kentucky and Lake Charles, Louisiana, where

(06:08):
our two moms went to a firestation and a hospital, respectively, and
left their kids right outside. Shesaid this was most likely due to the
fact that the parents didn't want tohave to interact with anyone, despite how
close you get to the relinquishing stations. If you don't hand your baby over

(06:30):
to a person, it's considered abandonment. Kelsey said safe haven laws aren't just
for mothers. While we mostly hearof mothers abandoning their child, fathers are
not exempt from this practice. Accordingto the Child Welfare Information Gateway, dad's
moms, legal guardians, or someonewho has the parents' permission can give the

(06:54):
child up at a safe haven location. This all depends on the state in
which you reside, of course,However, most states safe haven laws are
for both the mother and father.Relinquishing parents are often left with no other
choice. I don't believe that amother would carry a child for nine months

(07:16):
and place their child in an unsafeplace because she wants to, Kelsey add
it, I think that a mothercarries her child for nine months in the
crisis mode and freaks out doesn't knowwhat to do. She added that they
were perhaps in a bad situation, see no way out, and end up

(07:40):
panicking. To come back this,Kelsey said, it's important to provide moms
with the proper resources and information priorto this crisis occurring so that they're aware
of their options. Some states havesafe Haven baby boxes that are completely anonymous.

(08:00):
To come back the anonymity problem, kel City Kelousy came up with the
idea for safe Haven baby boxes, which provides one hundred anonymity. The box
is typically installed at a fire stationor hospital or devices people can use to
surrender their babies. Once they openthe box, it triggers an alarm,

(08:24):
alerting personnel that a baby needs tobe picked up. The box has cooling
and heating features that to keep thechild safe until someone arives within less than
three minutes. She added that thereare no cameras around the box, so
there's no fear of being recorded. And the baby box is launched in Indiana

(08:48):
in twenty and sixteen and according toKelsey, the state had has had zero
babies die from abandonment since then,so safe haty even baby boxes also has
a twenty four hour hotline and thatnumber is as follows, one eight hundred
six sixty six nine nine Baby one. That is one eight six six nine

(09:16):
nine Baby one that women in needcan call or anyone perhaps in need can
call that number. And safe havenlaws protect babies and the presson relinquishing them,
and the general rule is that ifa parent drops an unharmed a new
born off at a designated safe havenlocation and hands the child over to someone,

(09:41):
that parent will be able to gofree and you know, without any
charges. However, the laws dovary from state to state, so for
more information, Approximately thirty four states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico

(10:01):
do not persecute a parent for childabandonment when a baby is relinquished to a
safe haven all right now. TheChild Welfare government website has this stated on
their website as well, and insixteen states safe relinquishment of the infant is

(10:22):
an is an affirmative defense in anypersecution or prosecution rather of the parent or
he's or her agent for any crimeagainst the child, such as abandonment,
neglect, or child endangerment. Aparent may be asked to voluntarily fill out

(10:43):
paperwork on the child's medical history,of course, or anything that is pertinent
for the safe haven location to knowabout the child, like allergies and all
of that stuff. All right, but once the child is deemed unharmed,
the parent can leave, you know, with no more questions. Ela,
all right, blessings to all,Welcome again, I am Jerry. This

portion of our study covers God givesAbraham a new name. What should I
say? God gives Abram a newname? A great many people feel that
the seventeenth chapter of this most outstandingchapter of the Book of Genesis. Feel
like this is the most outstanding chapterof the Book of Genesis. Here God

(11:28):
makes a covenant with Abram and confirmshis promise to him about a son.
He lets Abram know that Ishmael isnot the one he promised to him.
In one sense, this chapter isthe key to the Book of Genesis,
and it may be key to theentire Bible. God's covenant with Abram concerns

(11:50):
two important items, a seed anda land. He reveals himself to Abram
by a new name, El Shahdai, the Almighty God, and he also
gives Abram a new name. Upto this point his name was able.
Now it has changed to Abraham.Abram means high Father, and Abraham means

(12:16):
father of a multitude. All rightnow. That Ishmael was not the son
God promised to Abraham is the thingthat this chapter makes very clear, all
right now. Genesis chapter seventeen describesGod's appearance to Abram, who is now
ninety nine years old at the time, and twenty three years have passed since

(12:39):
God first promised to make Abram agreat nation and to give him and to
his descendants the land of Caitlin. Now, during that time, Abram and
his large company have lived in differentparts of the region. He has grown
quite wealthy, and God has appearedto him several more times to restate ad

(13:01):
expand on the initial initial covenant promises. Still, Abram hels only one son,
Ishmael, born to him by hiswife's servant, Haygd, who he's
now thirteen years old. All right, Abram and his wife Sarah, who

(13:22):
has been bearing for their entire marriage, seem to have resisted attempting to have
children through other women before the eventsof Genesis chapter sixteen. Of course,
now at this point they likely assumedthat God's promises and blessings to Abram would
pass through Ishmael. After all,at ninety nine and eighty nine years old,

(13:45):
respectively, they were well passed thewindow for conceiving or bearing children.
That's when God appears to Abram again. This meeting is different than those earlier
encounters, however. This time,in addition to the familiar and seemingly impossible
promises, God also has requirements forAbram. God commands Abram to walk with

(14:11):
him and to be blameless. Abramwould indeed be the father of nations.
Kings would come from him. Toconfirm that fact, God changed Abram's name
to Abraham. While Abram means exaltedfather, the name Abraham sounds like the

(14:33):
Hebrew phrase for a father of amultitude. The land of Cadan would belong
to Abraham and his descendants forever. It is now time to open our heart's
minds and souls to the word ofGod, and our scripture will be coming
from Genesis chapter seventeen, verses onethrough five. King James version. That

(14:58):
is, Genesis chapter seven, seventeen, verses one through five. King James
version. Let's read Genesis chapter seventeen. And when Abram was ninety years old
and nine, the Lord appeared toAbram and said unto him, I am

(15:22):
the Almighty God, walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I
will make my covenant between me andTHEE, and will multiply THEE exceedingly.
And Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying,
as for me, behold, mycovenant is with THEE, and thou shalt
be a father of many nations.Neither shall thy name anymore be called Abram,

(15:46):
but thy name shall be Abraham, for a father of many nations?
Have I made THEE? All right? Now, we are going to be
going into our verse breakdown. Allright, we'll start with Genesis chapter seventeen,

(16:07):
verse one, King James version,of course. And when Abram was
ninety years old and nine, theLord appeared to Abram and said, unto
him, I am the Almighty God, walked before me, and be thou

(16:29):
perfect, all right. Now HereAbram's story jumps ahead thirteen years from the
end of the previous chapter. Allright, and as far as we know,
Abram has not heard from God atleast in any special way, since
the birth of his son Ishmael toserviized servant girl Hagard. Now the Lord

(16:56):
now appears to a ninety nine yearold Abram, who, in his waiting
has decided that perhaps Ismael is thechild of God's covenant promises. After Oh,
God will make clear to Abram thatis not the case. No,
no, no, no, no, no no. For the first time
in scripture, God refers to himselfas God Almighty, as el Shadai.

(17:22):
Now, this is the name meantto establish God's power here on earth,
even over nature and in the lifeof Abram and Sarah. God begins his
new contact with Abram with two commands. Walk before me faithfully and be blameless.

(17:45):
Literally, God commands able to walkin the Lord's presence and to be
of such good character before God thatno valid charge of wrongdoing could be brought
against him. This is unlike othertimes when God spelled out his promises to
Abram. He begins this conversation byplacing expectations an ablem to live a life

(18:08):
worthy of this covenant relationship with God. We're not meant to understand that Abram
was sinlessly perfect or that he couldbecome so. This only means that God
expected Abram to center every aspect ofhis life around honoring the Lord. All

(18:29):
right, now, let's move italong to Genesis chapter seventeen, verse two.
And I will make my covenant betweenme and THEE and will multiply THEE
exceedingly. Now, this is thethird time God has promised to bless ablem,
and we can see information on thisin Genesis chapter twelve, verses one
through three, as well as chapterfifteen, verses one through twenty one.

(18:53):
In the second blessing, God specificallytold him that a son of Abram's own
flossh and blood, will be hisheir, according to chapter fifteen, verse
four. Now, the record thennotes the implications of Abram's belief in chapter
fifteen, verse six. In spiteof that faith, Abram had come to

(19:17):
believe that he needed to take mattersinto his own hands. When Sarai,
his wife, suggests he take herservant Hagard as a surrogate wife, he
agrees, and hence Ismael is bornas a result, But the covenant of
which God speaks does not involve Ishmael. Sure don't. God will multiply Abram

(19:41):
through another son, one yet tobe born. To Abram and sarah Rai,
this appearance by God to Abram differsfrom their previous encounters in the book
of Genesis. In the previous verse, God began by placing an expectation Abram.
He told Abram to walk before himand to be blameless. God now

(20:07):
restates that he will make his covenantbetween himself and Abram and will multiply him
exceedingly by greatly increasing Abram's numbers. The next verses will reveal that Abram received
this covenant promise from God very reverently. At the same time, he also

(20:29):
wants to understand how this could happen. After all, Abram was ninety nine
years old at this time according toGenesis chapter seventeen, verse one, and
it has been thirteen years since thebirth of his only child, Ishmael through
his servant Hagard according to Genesis chaptersixteen, verse sixteen, And it has

(20:53):
been twenty three years since God beganmaking these repeated promises in Genesis chapter twelve,
verse four, which do not seemto line up with Abram's everyday experience.
God has asked Abram to continue tobelieve this time, though God would
ask for even more. So Let'smove it along to Genesis chapter seventeen,

(21:18):
verse three, And Abram fell onhis face, and God talked with him,
saying, Abram is properly awed bythis appearance of the Lord. Whether
falling on his face means lying prostratebefore the before the Lord or dropping to

(21:40):
his knees and bowing forward is notparticularly specified. In either case, Abram
shows the respect due to the Lord. Abram communicated to God that he would
receive all that God was saying withhumility and great revenence. Although God does
not require of us, many believerstoday continue to approach God in prayer while

(22:03):
kneeling or lying face down on theground. Later, when God provides details
on how he will accomplish his promises, Abram will once again fall on his
face. At that point, however, it would be in laughter and disbelief.
God's suggestion that a ninety nine yearold man and a barren eighty nine

(22:27):
year old woman will have a childwould be quite a shock that we could
find this information in Genesis chapter seventeen, verse seventeen. All right, now,
let's move it along to Genesis chapterseventeen, verse four. As for

(22:48):
me, behold, my covenant iswith THEE, and thou shalt be a
father of many nations. All right. Earlier God had promised to make up
Abram a great nation, and thisis in accordance with Genesis chapter twelve,
verse two. Now the promise isthat he will be a father of many
nations. Now God continues the covenantpromise. Specifically, God says to Abram,

(23:15):
says, Abram would be the fatherof many nations, all right.
Now. While God had promised beforethis to give Abram countless offspring, this
is the first time that God describesAbram as the patriarch of multiple nations.

(23:37):
It won't be the last time, though. In fact, in the next
verse, God will declare change inAbram's name, signifying this great future.
Finally, after twenty three years, according to Genesis chapter twelve, verse four,
as well as Genesis chapter seventeen, verse one and many struggles, the
man known as Abram will take onthe name which he is truly remembered Abraham.

(24:03):
According to Genesis chapter seventeen, versefive. It is easy to read
this passage and to see the fulfillmentin Israel through Isaac and his son Jacob
Edem. Through Isaac and his sonisa the nations that descended from Ismael,
and also the nations that descended fromAbraham via Katilla, the woman he marries

(24:30):
after Severa's death, according to Genesischapter twenty five one through six. But
there is more to the Covenant thanpolitical nations, since Paul makes clear that
Isaac alone is the era of promiseaccording to Roma's chapter nine, verse seven.
Now, thus the nations primarily inview, the ones included in this

(24:53):
promise must come from Isaac, whomAbra Abram will father. Alright now,
we'll move it along to Genesis chapterseventeen, verse five. Neither shall thy
name anymore be called Abril, butthy name shall be Abraham. For a

(25:19):
father of many nations have I madethee God gives two symbols of the Covenant.
The second symbol is described in Genesischapter seventeen UH verses ten through fourteen.
The first is the name change wesee here alright now. The first

(25:42):
UH, according to the first God'scovenant promise was that Abel would become the
uh Father of many nations. NowGod changes Abram's name to match this destiny.
After twenty three years and more thanfour chapters of the Book of Genesis,
the main and called Abram will takeon the famous name of Abraham,

(26:03):
according to Genesis chapter twelve, versefour, as well as Genesis chapter seventeen,
verse one. In modern times, specific names are not always thought to
be very important. Parents typically chosenames based on how they sound or how
they look in writing. The meaningof names for the modern area is almost
never an important consideration anymore. Inancient times, however, names were often

(26:29):
given by parents who to describe theirlives they hope their children will fulfill.
In other cases, they were usedas declarations of past events. God's change
of Abram's name at the age ofninety nine years old was highly significant.
The name Abram, given by Abram'sfather Tiva, means exalted father. It

(26:51):
was likely meant to suggest that Abramcame from a world of line. Now,
this new name Abraham sounds similar tothe Hebrew phrasing meaning father of a
multitude, exactly matching God's revelation ofwhat Abram did become this name changed required
another active faith from Abraham himself. He would have asked people to call him

(27:15):
Abraham, to refer to him asa father of a multitude. Would he
feel foolish telling people his new nameas a ninety nine year old man with
just one son born of a servantgirl, or would his new name increase
his confidence that God's purpose was willowable. Abram, whose name means exalted Father,

(27:37):
is henceforced to be known as Abraham, which probably means father of many.
As God repeats the promise of makingAbram Ham such a father, he
speaks as if it is already thecase, So that means it's what already
done? Hm? Do you havethe complexion for the protection? It is

(28:07):
now time for our life reflection. All right, well, the Lord told
abel i am el Shadai, GodAlmighty, serve me faithfully and live blameless
in life. God has the samemessage for us today. We are to

(28:30):
obey the Lord in every aspect,in every respect, because he is God,
and for that reason that reason isenough. Now, if we don't
think the benefits of obedience are worthit, consider who God is the only
one with power and ability to meetour everyday needs. Why did God repeat

(28:52):
this coveny to Abram HM twice before? He had mentioned this agreement in Genesis
chapter twelve as well as chapter fifteen. Here, however, God was bringing
it into focus and preparing to carryit out. He revealed to Abram several
specific parts of his covenant. First, God would give Abram many descendants.

(29:18):
Second, many nations would descend fromhim. Third, God would maintain his
covenant with Abram's descendants. And fourthGod would give Abram's descendants the land of
Canaan. All right now. Inthe Bible, people's names were very important.
A name often described a person's characteror experience. Therefore, shortly before
the promised son was conceived, Godchanged Abram's name, which means exalted father,

(29:44):
to Abram, which means father ofmany. Now, from this point
on it the Bible calls him Abraham. All right. Now, with that
being said, for now, thisis what God gives ablem a new name

(30:06):
is all about. Alright. Sowith that being said, we'll go ahead
and close out with prayer. Alright, Heaven, a father, son,
