Welcome to HBS and DWJ podcast. I am Jerry Joyce,
your host. Our mission to provide the knowledge that will
train sisters and brothers in Christ, to spread God's love
and create disciples.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
Our vision to share all resources that will.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Aid in the knowledge necessary for the building of God's kingdom.
The adversary does not know what to do with those
who possess integrity. We are not human beings on a
spiritual journey. On the contrary, we are spiritual beings on
a human journey. With that being said, we will open
(01:41):
this holy barber study session up with prayer. So please
join in, Oh Holy eternal Father, Son, Holy Spirit. It
is once again that were coming to you, as humble
as we know. How Heavenly Father, we asked that if
you reveal yourself to us, help us to learn the
(02:03):
heights and depths of your compassion, help us to grasp
the greatness of your mercy and forgiveness, moving our heart
in only a way that you can, And we pray
for you to help us to know more than we
do already. Thank you for your continued graces and mercies.
(02:24):
We pray these things in the precious name of Jesus Christ.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Amen. All right.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Our scripture of the week is Hebrews Chapter one, Versus
one and two, King James version. All right, God, who
at sundry times and in divers manners, spake in time
past unto the fathers, by the prophets, half in these
(02:58):
last days, spoken unto us by his son, whom he
hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he
made the worlds. All right, Now, Hebrews begins with a reference.
(03:20):
Let's say a reference to God's communication with mankind all
right now, And the letter is primarily written to Jewish
believers who place great importance on the profits of the
Old Testament. Verses one and two explain that God spoke
through the prophets in the past, and he now speaks
through Jesus Christ.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Now.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
This is an important point for several reasons. First, this
reminds us that the Old Testament and New Testament are
not contradictory. The message of God given by the Prophets
is not different than the message of God given through Christ.
The same God is speaking, continuing to show us more
(04:05):
and more of his plans. And second of all, this
emphasizes how important it is to listen to the message
of Christ right now. You know, if God is speaking,
then we are to listen. The Jewish people in particular
would have been sensitive to this idea. And Israel was
a chosen nation given special attention by God. And the
(04:30):
message of the Prophets was given to Israel, and God
expected them to listen to what he said here and well,
with that being said, Israel, they are the chosen people.
So that's why the expectations were held. How pun Israel
now here the writer of Hebrews wants us to understand
(04:53):
that when God speaks, we have an obligation to pay
attention to what God is saying, and this is the
background for this letters many warnings against abandoning the Gospel
right now. Verses one and two of Hebrews emphasizes the
fact that Christ is the latest part of God's continuous,
(05:16):
consistent message. Now, where God had spoken through the prophets
of the Old Testament, he now speaks through the person
of Jesus Christ. These are not contradictory messages. Jesus is
the Messiah of whom those prophets spoke all right now.
Since this is a message from God, it stands the
(05:38):
reason that those who love God are to listen. And
knowing that Jesus is a message from God.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Jesus is a message from God and is God. That's right,
and is God and is the ultimate Truth sets the
table for this letter's many warnings against in the Gospel
all right now. The end of verse two also introduces
the idea or an ideal which is fundamental to the
(06:09):
Christian faith. Jesus Christ is God right now. The first
four verses of this book establishes that Jesus is not
some created being or a higher form of Angel, according
to verse three. Now, this is right here, courting the
verse three, in the word, Jesus is the exact imprint
(06:32):
of the nature of God. So what does that make him?
Don't they make him God? This is the consistent teaching
of the Bible that Christ is both fully God and
fully man.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Right now.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
The words of this verse echo the Gospel of John,
which notes that all things were made through Christ, and
without Christ was not anything made that was made. This
is John Chapel one three. This establishes that Jesus is
in fact part of the uncreated and eternal God. All
(07:10):
things which were made were made by God, all right.
The only thing not made is the eternal Creator, all right.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Now.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
With that being said, our topic today is God reaffirms
his promise Part two discussion. In our last discussion, Abraham
arranged a large meal for three unexpected visitors, and his
actions exhibit generosity, humility, and grace. Whether or not Abraham
(07:40):
knew these men were God and two angels in human
form is unknown. However, the fact will become obvious as
they continue their conversations, starting in verse nine, Abraham's visitors
have finished the meal and began to reveal the purpose
of their visit. All right now. Their first question shows
(08:03):
they know more about Abraham than they let on. They
know of his wife several and they ask where she is.
Abraham replies that Severh is in the tenth All right,
so we will soon learn that she is listening intently
to this interaction. As with other questions asked by God
(08:26):
or his messages, the purpose is not to gain information.
God and his companions know exactly where sever is. And yet,
just as parents often ask children questions in order to
clarify ideas, God has a habit of using questions rather
than statements, in order to force man to acknowledge his situation.
(08:49):
If we can find in these examples in Genesis chapter three,
verse nine, as well as Acts chapter nine, verse four.
All right, now, God speaks to Abraham about Sarah with
the full knowledge that she is listening. Now, the Lord
repeats what he has said to Abraham to Abraham, I
(09:10):
mean in the previous chapter, all right now, This time, though,
he speaks in a way that Sarah would be for
sure to hear, and God acknowledges that.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
Well.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
God agnounces and Sarah clearly hears that she will have
a son by this time next year, when the Lord
plans a return visit right now. Hearing such an announcement
would clearly confirm for Abraham that this was the Lord
who had made the same promise to him in the
previous chapter. Sarah, though, seems to be hearing this promise
(09:49):
for the very first time. Most likely Abraham had not
told her what God revealed to him in a prior
in county. Sarah's initial reaction will be similar to Abraham's.
Given her lifelong barrenness and advanced age, she will laugh
at the suggestion of having a natural born child. Abraham
(10:09):
and Sarah were around one hundred and ninety years old, respectively.
Given the long life spans of early mankind as found
in Genus chapter five, it stands the reason that people
of Abraham's era continue to have children later than they
do today. All right now, at that same time, the
text spells out that they were definitely considered old, and
(10:35):
at this point in human history, ninety year old people
were not thought of as young by any stretch of
the imagination. And in addition, not only has Sarah been
barren for her entire life. She has also passed menopause,
so she done went through the hot flashes and all
that stuff. So, as the English Standard version of the
(10:58):
Bible puts it, the way of women had ceased to
be with her all right. So by every measure, then
it would be physically impossible for Sara to conceive and
bear a child. According to this information, only God could
cause such a thing to happen at this point in
(11:19):
her life. That, of course, is exactly what it is
about to happen. Now Sarah is listening from inside the
tent as Abraham converses with three strangers, and this is
all in accordance with Jenesis chapter eighteen, verses ninety ten.
Now these men are actually God in human form, along
with two angels, and their prophecy to Abraham echoed the
(11:42):
same guaranteed given to Abraham alone in an earlier encounter.
Sarah will become pregnant. Abraham will now know for sure
these men are actually a physical manifestation of God and
two angels.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
All right.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Now, standing in the nearby tenth, Servia has heard the
Lord's statement. By this time next year she would have
a son. It's unclear whether or not Sarah understood at
this point that it was the Lord speaking. What Servi
did understand is that she had been burying her entire life,
(12:22):
unable to conceive a child with Abraham. Now, at the
age of ninety or so.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
She had past mental pause.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
So some commentators suggest that she had Abraham about one
hundred years old himself had long since stop even having intercourse.
So this makes it even more impossible to have a
child if you're not you know, connecting the tools. So
all of the evidence of Sarah's life told her that
(12:54):
heaven a baby was really impossible, all right. So her
initial response to the idea was the same as Abraham's
had been. Sarah laughed in unbelief. Now that response seems
in tire of understandable to us. The Lord, however, will
gently rebuke her for it in the following verses. Now
(13:18):
that rebuke is in a humorously ironic way, and it
will include the name of the child she is about
to conceive, which is Isaac. And Isaac means he laughs.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
That's what that name means. He laughs, all right.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Now, the strict approach to hospitality practice in that era
would have applied to every aspect of this event. In
part that probably meant Sarah should have not been eavesdropping.
It certainly would have meant that laughing at something I
guess has said, unless it was intended as a joke,
could have been seen as in polite all right now.
(13:59):
Since the details this passage or brief we don't know
of Abraham and the three men could hear Sarah laugh
in response to the idea of her having a baby,
it is possible that God's divine awareness that she laughed
at herself served as evidence that this was indeed the
(14:19):
Lord in human form outside of her tent all right now.
The text itself gives us no way to know for
sure in either case or in either case, the Lord
asked Abraham why Sarah had laughed in unbelief about the idea. Now,
this would have been an awkward question for Abraham to answer,
(14:39):
since his response to the same news was similar in
Genesis chapter seventeen, verse seventeen. All right, Gently chiding the reaction,
the Lord asks the rahtorical question. He asked us questions
of Abraham, and this question was demanding a one word else. No,
(15:07):
that's right now, all right now, anything which with which
power or can do God's power can accomplish. So that
means there's nothing.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
Too hard for the Lord. Right amen? All right?
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Now God is calling Sea and Abraham to believe that
he would do a seemingly impossible thing for them. All right,
The Lord questions this uh, this response, and it is
one that resonates for every person who struggles to trust
God in difficult time. God gives great and precious promises
(15:46):
to those who trust in Christ, according to Second Peter
versus one, Uh. According to the Second Peter verse chapter one,
verse four, Often it feels quite unlikely that such things
as God's empowermentt his comfort, and even eternal life could
ever happen for us, you know, But we have to
(16:06):
ask ourselves this question. Is anything too hard for the Lord?
To emphasize that nothing is too hard for him, the
Lord repeats his promises once more. Sarah will have a
son when the Lord visits them at the appointed time.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
The following year.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Now, oddly, Sarah chooses to deny that she even laughed.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
Now, this silly life feels beside.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
The point when the Lord has told her that she
will miraculously have a baby in a year's time. Now,
the Lord repeats that she did laugh, And yet we're
told Sarah was afraid.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Perhaps she thought.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
That Lord would punish her in some way for her
unbelieving left, or for listening in on a conversation in
which she was not explicitly involved, so she was easdropping. Anyways,
He does not condemn my though. In fact, as God
revealed to Abraham in the previous chapter, when Abraham also
(17:09):
laughed at such an idea, their son's joyful name would
be Isaac, which means laughter. H In a ways, this
name not only evokes happiness, it also serves as a subtle,
more almost playful rebuke of Abraham and Serrul's mutual doubt
of the having a child together in the first place. Now,
(17:32):
the three men returned to their mysterious journey as a
good host, seeing his guest of Abraham washed with them
for some distance, and they would have walked through the
hills near Hebron and come to a good spot for
glimpsing the city of Sodom in the distance. This city,
like Genmorro, had already established a reputation for Morrol to poverty,
(17:56):
and according to Genesis chapter thirteen, verse thirteen, when we
saw him last in Genesis, chapter fourteen, Lot had been
rescued from foreign invaders and returned to his Homeome In
soldomn Lot's place in that town would become central to
the rest of this chapter. All right, So now we're
(18:20):
gonna move it along to our next section. Do you
have the complexion for the protection? It is now time
for our life reflection, all right. In Genesis chapter eighteen,
verse fourteen, is anything too hard for the Lord? The
(18:42):
obvious answer is, of course not. This question reveals much
about God. Make it a habit to insert your specific
needs into this question. All right, Now we should ask
ourselves this question, Is this day in my life too
hard for the Lord?
Speaker 1 (19:02):
No?
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Is this habit I'm trying to break too hard for him?
Speaker 1 (19:07):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Is the communication problem I'm having too hard for him?
Speaker 1 (19:13):
No?
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Asking the question this way reminds you that God is
personally involved in your life and nudges you to ask
for his power to help you. Now, we should all
ask for God to help us, and we should realize
that well we ask these questions of ourselves, that God
is personally involved, involved in our lives or in our
(19:38):
life rather. All right now, Genesis chapter eighteen, verse fifteen,
Sarah alive because she was afraid of being discovered right
now in this when you look at this chapter, fear
is the most common motive for lying, and we are
afraid that our inner thoughts and emotions will be exposed
(20:01):
or our wrongdoings discovered. But lying causes greater complications than
telling the truth and brings even more problems. So we
will be far better off telling the truth right from
the story instead of making up lies, telling them lies.

let down by hundreds of bland, overpriced, overproduced options, not
to mention the unwelcome pressure from the salespeople. If the

was higher quality, it would be overpriced. If it was
custom made to fit her family, it would take months

There had to be a better way. If she couldn't

Speaker 2 (25:08):
Okay, uh, hello Jake, Well we know you're not from
State Farm. Anyways, thank you for taking the time to
stop buying comment on this episode. Blessings my friend. All right,
let's move along to Hannah. Hannah says, hey, there, she
got the sun out and everything, or she's got it together.
(25:31):
This post on God's reaffirming h on God reaffirming his
promise to Abraham is.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Truly p thought provoking.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
The depiction of Abraham's generalist hospitality and the unfolding revelation
about Sarah having a son adds depth to the to
the narrative. I'm curious to know in your interpretation, how
do you think Sarah's laughter reflects her emotions and faith
at the moment. It's fastating how these ancient stories still
(26:02):
resonate with us today. Keep up the great content and
it's hand claps and stars everywhere. I know you guys
can't see this, but this is I get this these
comments from the website, from the HBS and DWJ website,
and some people put all kinds of emotions or what
do you call emojis in them, So this one she
(26:24):
has keep up the great content with hand claps and
stars and stuff at the end. It is very exciting. Okay,
all right, Ben. Anyways, let me reply to Hannah. Hello, Hannah,
thank you for sharing your thoughts on this HBS and
DWJ platform. It seemed, in my unworthy opinion that Sarah laughed,
showing how she lost confidence in God. Now what Sarah did?
(26:49):
You know? What she did understand? I'll say this is
that she had been baring her whole life, so she
knows this, and she knows that she has been unable
to conceive a child with Abraham, and now, at the
age of ninety or so, she had passed menopause. In
(27:09):
all of the evidence of Sarah's life told her that
having a baby was impossible, so her initial response to
the idea was the same as Abraham's had been. Sarah
laughed in unbelieved. That's what Abraham did before. Sarah didn't
know about it, but yeah he did. He had the
same reaction. So that response seems entirely understandable to us,
(27:31):
doesn't it. M thank you for stopping by and blessings
my friend. All right, let's move it along to Irene.
Irene says, this passage reminds me of times when I've
encountered unexpected kindness from strangers. It's a beautiful illustration of
how God can work through anyone to show his show
us his love and grace. Did Abraham recognize the Lord immediately?
(27:56):
What does this tells us about the interaction with humanity?
Is it always a gradual unveiling or are there are
moments of sudden clarity? Hello there, Irene, Well, thank you
(28:16):
kindly for stopping by, HBS and DWG. Your comments are
greatly appreciated. And I'll just say Abraham seems to recognize
the men as important somehow, as he treats them as
honor guests, but it's not clear he considers any of
them God himself. When the two angels have left for soldom,
(28:41):
Abraham seems to have identified the third man as the Lord.
So with that being said, soldom and go moral notoriously
sinful cities in the Biblical Book of Genesis, destroyed by
Sulfer and fired because God's anger was provoked by man sin.
Now God does what he wants when he wants, because
(29:03):
he is the almighty Alpha and Omega, beginning in the end,
the first and the last, self existing God. All right,
so please stop by and comment on more episodes and
add to our interactive community blessings, my friend, all right,
let's move it along to Persinduda percentDu Demonca says, I
(29:26):
found your exploration of God's promise and Abraham's intercession for
the let's see for soldom quite intriguing. The depth of
Abraham's plea for mercy and God's response highlights the intricacies
of divine interaction. Have you encountered similar instances in other
(29:47):
religious texts where human intervention or prayer impacts divine decisions. Personally,
I've reflected on moments where prayer seemed to alter circumstance.
Is leading me to contemplate the interplay between divine will
and human supplication. Moreover, the moral implications of Abraham's negotiation
(30:12):
with God raised compelling questions about righteousness and mercy. How
do you perceive the balance between justice and compassion in
such scenarios. It's a topic that prompts introspection or introspection
rather about the nature of divine justice and the role
of human advocacy within it. Your post delves into the
(30:36):
escentral aspect of faith and morality, sparkling sparking contemplation on
the complexities of divine interactions in our lives. Thank you
for sharing these thoughtful, provoking insights. Wow, that's pretty that's
pretty good. Well, Hello, and welcome back to HBS and
(30:58):
DWJ platform. The present Pacindu demonca. One example of human
intervention or prayer impacting divine decisions is when Moses begged
God to send someone else to confront the Phaedroh in
Exodus chapter four, verses one through fourteen. All right, And
another is when Lazarus's mourners didn't believe they would ever
(31:23):
see Lazarus again in this life, found in John chapter eleven,
verse seventeen, verses seventeen through thirty seven. And that doesn't
mean that God never listens to us, though Abraham pleaded
with him to spread soldom and gomorra if there were
any righteous citizens according to Genesis chapter eighteen, verses sixteen
(31:45):
through thirty three, and God said he would. But in
the end events played out as God said they would,
because despite Abraham's pleased for mercy, there was no one
in Solo or Gomorrah who wanted it right now. The
balance between justice and compassion in such scenarios teaches us
to have faith in good Thank you for stopping by
(32:08):
as you continuously do, and blessings my friend. All right,
let's move it along to Bob Lynch. It might be last,
but not least. Bob Lynch says, this is a very
well written and informative summary of Genesis chapter eighteen. It
is clear, concise, and engaging, and it accurately captures the
(32:29):
main points of the text.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
I particularly appreciate how you.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
Have woven in your own insights and reflections, as well
as how you have made the content relevant to the
modern audience. Thanks, good job, keep up the good work, Bob.
All right, Hello Bob, thanks for stopping by and adding
value to HBS and DWJ with your comments. It is
(32:55):
always good to hear that there are people who appreciate
the hard work that has been put together to create
a learning platform such as this. As I keep up
the good work, I'll do my best to spread this
information as far as I can to help everyone who
is interested. And thanks again for stopping by and commenting
on this HBS and DWJ platform and as always, blessings

this is what God reaffirms his promise. Part two discussion
