Blessings to all,
Welcome again, I am Jerry, this portion of our study covers:

GOD’S COVENANT part 1

Here was a man who was a father before he had any children. Abraham was Abraham, father of a multitude, by faith at that time. But four thousand years later, where you and I sit, we can say that God sure made this good. The name stuck, if you please, and he is still Abraham, the father of a multitude.

One of the most influential names in human history is that of Abraham—a man whom Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all claim as a patriarch. However, to this point in the Bible, that name has not been used. This important historical figure is still carrying his original name of Abram. Here, at last, God will change Abram's name to Abraham, while establishing a symbol of their covenant: circumcision.

Genesis 17 describes God's appearance to Abram, who is now 99 years old. Twenty-three years have passed since God first promised to make Abram a great nation and to give to him and to his descendants the land of Canaan. During that time, Abram and his large company have lived in different parts of the region.

He has grown quite wealthy, and God has appeared to him several more times to restate and expand on the initial covenant promises. Still, Abram has only one son. Ishmael, born to him by his wife's servant Hagar, is now 13. Abram and his wife Sarai, who has been barren for their entire marriage, seem to have resisted attempting to have children through other women before the events of Genesis chapter 16.

At this point, they likely assumed that God's promises and blessing to Abram would pass through Ishmael. After all, at 99 and 89 respectively, they were well past the window for conceiving or bearing children. That's when God appears to Abram again. This meeting is different than those earlier encounters, however.

This time, in addition to the familiar and seemingly impossible promises, God also has requirements for Abram. God commands Abram to walk with Him and to be blameless. Abram would, indeed, be the father of nations. Kings would come from him. To confirm that fact, God changed Abram's name to Abraham.

While Abram means "exalted father," the name Abraham sounds like the Hebrew phrase for "father of a multitude." The land of Canaan would belong to Abraham and his descendants forever. As a sign of keeping this covenant, God had a new requirement for Abraham. He and every male of his household, born or bought, and every male in every generation to come, must be circumcised.

This is the ritual removal of the foreskin. Those who were not circumcised would not be included in this covenant between God and Abraham's people.

It is time to open our hearts, minds, and souls to the Word Of GOD.

Our scripture will be coming from:

Genesis 17:6-14 KJV

[6] And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
[7] And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
[8] And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
[9] And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.
[10] This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
[11] And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.
[12] And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.
[13] He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
[14] And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

Doctor Abraham Virgus is Vice Chair ofEducation at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
He's actually an expert in bedside manorteaching medical students about the importance of
the human touch. Virgus is allabout the power of connection as a medical

(05:00):
practitioner and in his other calling author. A good story goes beyond what a
forgiving God cares to do. Itreconciles families and unburdens them of secrets whose
bond is stronger than blood. Butin their revealing, as in their keeping,

(05:20):
secrets can carry family apart. Nowthese words are from his best selling
book, The Covenant of Water, and they are as lush and vibrant as
the world they describe, Vigas said. The book is set between nineteen hundred
and nineteen seventy in Kerala, whichis a coastal territory in India, full

(05:45):
of lates, waterways, lagoons, backwaters, and in every generation in this
particular family, I focus on oneor more members DRAMs. The drownings are
just one of the mysteries in thefamily story of a beloved matriarch, decades
of enduring love and tragic depths thatwere sometimes excruciating for him to write about.

(06:13):
Every time I came to revise certainscenes, no matter how many times
I'd done it, it was tough, he said, It was losing somebody.
The Covenant of Water is a difficultbook to describe in a few words.
It's even tougher to sum up thelife of its author. Abraham Vigus

(06:35):
was born in Ethiopia to Indian parents. His mother was a teacher who early
on taught her boys the value ofeducation. Abraham's brother, George is now
a professor at m I team. After medical school in the nineteen eighties,
doctor Vigus took a residency in JohnsonCity, Tennessee. He found a growing

(07:00):
number of people with HIV, whichat that point in time was fatal.
Now the experience made him want totell the world about what he had saw
in the people he met. Alot of their messages where you know,
don't postpone your dreams. Life istoo short to postpone the things you want

(07:20):
to do to this one day,now this might transpire, he said.
And so all those kinds of thingscame together at that moment, and I
was going to write this book.I had to write the book. So
in the winter of nineteen ninety heput his medical practice on who cashed in

(07:44):
his retirement and moved his young familyto the University of Iowa and their acclaimed
writing program. I tell you,if you do that, it makes you
take yourself seriously as a writer,he said, So I could no longer
I'm dabbling in this stuff. Imean, I was all in The resulting
book, My Own Country, wasa sensation. The subsequent novel two thousand

(08:09):
and nine s. Cutting for Stonespent two years on the New York Times
bestseller list, but his second novel, The Covenant of Water, was closest
to his heart. It was inspiredby end dedicated to his mother, Mary

(08:30):
Emma, who died in twenty sixteen. Vergus said, the inspiration was very
much my mom and the strong womenaround my mother, such as her mother
in law and her mother. Thesewere sort of heroic women who lived quiet
lives. The world would never knowabout their heroism, the world would never

(08:52):
know how much tragedy they went through. Their story spans three generations, and
there's a lot to keep track of, so he used whiteboards to keep it
all straight. You know, Ithink it was really not helpful in the
way people imagine where it was likean architectural plan. I think this was

(09:13):
me sort of beginning to see thecharacteristics or to see the characteristics and the
characters to visualize them for myself,he said. After ten years he finally
got The Covenant of Water published, and then a form of literally lightning struck,

(09:35):
he received a phone call from OprahWinfrey. I heard this beautiful resonant
voice. He says, Hi,this is Oprah, and I stood up
because I have the most tremendous respectfor her, he said. I mean,
I don't know of anybody else inour culture that has brought more readers

(09:58):
to your books. Not only didOprah choose his novel for her book club,
she physically handed out copies of it, and she plans to make it
into a movie. And Oprah's notthe only big fan. It was on
former President Obama's list of favorite booksfrom the year twenty twenty three. I've

(10:22):
been incredibly lucky, Vergus said,I don't know that I can point to
it it being all my skills, certainly not. You need a lot of
luck when you produce a book.Asked what his mother would think of the
reaction to his work, Vergus replied, I think my mother would be delighted.
Our parents are not particularly demonstrative inthe things that they say in the

(10:46):
terms of praise, but I thinkshe would have been very pleased. And
if writing is Abraham Virgus opening hisheart to the world, the world has
answered in kind. The book stayedon the New York Times Best Settler list
for thirty seven weeks. That's right, three seven weeks. The story inspired

(11:09):
by his mother has taken on alife of its own, something even the
esteemed doctor finds hard to explain. It's amazing, he said. It's a
bestseller in Italy South Africa. Youknow, when I hear these things,
I don't know what to say.You know, when I get these pieces

(11:30):
of good news coming to me,for example, you know CBS Sunday Morning
is going to be talking to you, it feels beyond me, he says.
It's just, you know, Idid something, but I didn't do
the whole thing. It's bigger thanme. All right, blessings to all.
Welcome again. I am Jerry. This portion of our study covers God's

(11:54):
Covenant Part one. Here was aman who was a father before he had
any children. Abraham was Abraham, father of a multitude by faith at that
time. But four thousand years later, where you and I sit, we
can say that God surely made thisgood. The name stuck, if you

(12:18):

day. One of the most influentialnames in human history is that of Abraham,
a man who Judaism, Christianity, had Islam all claimed as a patriarch.
However, to this point in theBible that name has not been used.

(12:43):
This important historical figure is still carryinghis original name of Abram. Here
at last, God would change Abram'sname to Abraham while establishing a symbol of
their covenant circumcision. All right now, Genesis seventeen describes God's appearance to Abram,
who is now ninety nine years old. Twenty three years has passed since

(13:07):
God's fresh promise to make Abram agreat nation and to give to him and
to his descendants the land of Canaan. Now, during that time, Abram
and his large company have lived indifferent parts of the region. He has
grown quite wealthy, and God hasappeared to him several more times to restate

(13:28):
and expand on the initial covenant promises. Still, Abram has only one son,
Ishmael, born to him by hiswife's servant, Hagard, is now
thirteen years old. Right now,Abram and his wife Sarah, who has
been barren for their entire marriage, seems to have resisted attempting to have children

(13:50):
through other women before the events ofGenesis chapter sixteen. Now, at this
point, they likely assumed that God'spromises and blessing to Abram would pass through
Ismael. After all, at ninetynine and eighty nine years old, respectfully,
they were well passed the wonder forconceiving or bearing children. All right,

(14:13):
Now, that's when God appears toAbram again. This meeting is different
than those earlier encounters, however. This time, in addition to the familiar
and seemingly impossible promises, God alsohas requirements for Abram. God commands Abram
to walk with him and be blameless. Abram would indeed be the father of

(14:37):
nations. Kings would come from him. To confirm that fact, God changed
abram name to Abraham. While Abrammeans exalted father, the name Abraham sounds
like the Hebrew phrase for father ofa multitude. The land of Cateran would
belong to Abraham and his descendants forever. As a sign of keeping his covenant,

(15:03):
God had a new requirement for Abraham. He and every male of his
household born or bought, and everymale in every generation to come, must
be circumcised. This is the ritualremoval of the foreskin. Now, those
who were not circumcised would not beincluded in this covenant between God and Abraham's

(15:26):
people. All right, it isnow time to open our hearts, minds,
and souldiers to the word of God. Our scripture will be coming from
Genesis chapter seventeen, verses six throughfourteen. King James version. That is
Genesis chapter seventeen, verses six throughfourteen. King James version. Let's read.

(15:54):
And I will make THEE exceedingly, and I will make nations of THEE.
King shall come out of THEE.And I will establish my covenant between
me and THEE and thy seed afterTHEE and their generations, for an everlasting
covenant. To be a god untoTHEE and to thy seed after THEE.
And I will give unto THEE andto thy seed after THEE the land wherein

(16:18):
thou art a stranger, all theland of Canaan, for an everlasting possession.
And I will be their God.And God said unto Abraham, thou
shalt keep my covenant. Therefore, thou and thy seed after THEE and their
generations. This is my covenant whichye shall keep between me and you and
thy seed after THEE. Every manchild among you shall be circumcised, and

(16:45):
ye shall circumcise the flesh of yourforeskin, and it shall be a token
of the covenant betwixt me and you, and he that is eight days old
shall be circumcised among you, everyman child in your generations. He that
is born in the house or boughtwith money of any stranger, which is
not of thy seat, he thatis born in thy house, and he

(17:07):
that is bought with thy money mustneeds be circumcised. And My covenant shall
be in your flesh for an everlastingcovenant. And the uncircumcised manchild, whose
flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from
his people. He hath broken mycovenant. All right. Now that we've

(17:32):
covered the verses, it is timefor our verse breakdown, starting with Genesis
chapter seventeen, verse six, KingJames version, and I will make thee
exceeding fruitful, and I will makenations of these and kings shall come out

(17:56):
of thee. All right. Here, Abram Abraham has one son at this
point, Ishmael, whose mother isHagard. God promises a greater fruitfulness to
come, and it will be seenin the birth of Isaic and later in

(18:17):
the birth of six sons to Katira, as found in Genesis chapter twenty five.
Right now, however, the keyto the covenant promises Isaac. So
the fruitfulness God promises is Abraham's throughhis descendants, grandson Jacob will have twelve
sons and a daughter, and thenation of Israel will come from these sons

(18:40):
with many kings born to them. Now, these kings will make their entrance
some nine hundred years later with Saul, and he will be a descendant of
Abraham's great grandson Benjamin, greater farthan the kings of Israel will be the
King of kings and the Lord oflords, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

(19:03):
as we can find in Matthew chapterone. Now God continues to reveal
his covenant promise to make Abram, now renamed Abraham, into a father of
multiple nations. God insists that hewill make Abram fruitful, causing many offspring
to come from him. All right, Now, Earlier in Genesis, God

(19:25):
commanded men like Adam and Noah tobe fruitful in multiply, and we can
find this information in Genesis chapter oneas well as Genus chapter nine. But
now God tells Abram Haam that hewill make him fruitful and cause him the
mustiply. Unlike those earlier encounters,God has now taken on himself the responsibility

(19:48):
to create nations out of a singlepatriarch. Finally, God reveals that kings
will come from Abraham, which makessense if Abraham is to father nations.
Still, God means for Abraham tounderstand that he will be the patriarch of
multiple royal lines. Now, atthis point in the conversation, Abraham most

(20:12):
likely still believes that Ishmael, hisonly son, through his servant girl Heygard,
is meant to be the fruit fulfillmentof these promises, as found in
Genesis chapter sixteen. It won't beuntil later, when God renames Abraham's wife
as Sarah Rod and declares that shewould be the mother of many nations,

(20:36):
that Abraham realizes that God is predictinga newborn baby for a ninety nine year
old man and an eighty nine yearold woman, as we can find in
Genesis chapter seventeen. And I willwell, that's Genesis chapter seventeen, verses
sixteen through and seventeen, so itwon't be in this lesson. It'll been

(21:00):
next. Now, let's move italong to Genesis chapter seventeen, verse seven.
And I will establish my covenant betweenme and THEE and thy seed after
these and their generations for an everlastingcovenant to be a god unto the and
to Thy seed after the Now,the language of the everlasting covenant is the

(21:22):
same as used in Genesis chapter nineand Exodus chapter thirty one. In so
far as it finds its fulfillment inChrist, it is an enduring covenant in
the fullest sense of the term everlasting. Now, Paul makes clear that Christ
is the fulfillment, and we canfind this information in Galatians chapter three,

(21:45):
verse sixteen, where the apostle disguisesbetween the singular seed as opposed to the
plural seeds. All right now,This indicates the fulfillment is in the one
person, Jesus Christ. Even so, there appears to be a duel fulfillment,

(22:07):
as it is to Thy Seed afterthee in their generations, so the
generations of Abraham see until the ultimatefulfillment is seen in Christ himself. All
right now, God continues to describehis covenant as covenant promises to the newly

(22:36):
renamed Abraham formerly known as Abra. All right, already, God has revealed
that Abraham would be the father ofmultiple nations and that kings will come from

(22:56):
him. Now God makes it clearthat these covenant promises will extend to Abraham's
offspring throughout all their generations. Infact, God describes this covenant as everlasting.
God will be Abraham's God and Godof Abraham's offspring forever. Now,

(23:22):
this covenant relationship will never end.God will keep these promises into eternity.
In establishing this forever covenant between Abram's, Abraham's offspring, and himself, God
is making for himself a people ofhis own people set apart as his people.
Now, these people will eventually becomethe nation of Israel. And yet,

(23:51):
despite what Abram Ham may think, the son who will fulfill these promises
has not yet been born. Ismael, Abraham's son through his servant Heygard,
as we can find in Genesis chaptersixteen, was never meant to be the
promised son. He would be blessedand prosperous, as God has promised his

(24:15):
mother in Genesis chapter sixteen. Butinstead God intends to allow this utterly couple
to conceive a son who will benamed Isaac. And we can find this
information in Genesis chapter seventeen, versenineteen. All right, now we're gonna

(24:38):
move it along to Genesis chapter seventeen, verse eight. And I will give
unto Thee and to thy seed afterThee the land wherein thou art a stranger,
all the land of Caitan for aneverlasting possession. And I will be
their God all right. Now Here, Abraham has been in Caitnaan for more

(25:03):
than two decades at this point, and he he still owns none of it.
He don't own a single grain ofsand. But further, God has
already said his descendants will be oppressedin a foreign land for four hundred years,
as we can find in Genesis chapterfifteen, verse thirteen. Now,
even so, God assures Abraham thathis descendants will indeed be given all the

(25:30):
land of Catenin. That's right, every piece of it, for another lasting
possession. All right. Now,let's move it along to Genesis number chapter
seventeen, verse nine. And Godsaid, unto Abram, Abraham, shall
I say thou shalt keep my covenant? Therefore thou and thy seed after Thee

(25:53):
in their generations right now, inexchange for the last things to be accorded,
Abraham and his descendants are to keepGod's covenant. Now, this means
to submit to him as their godand obey his commandments. All right.
Now, let's move it along toGenesis chapter seventeen, verse ten. This

(26:15):
is my covenant, which you shallkeep between me and you, and I
see after these every man child amongyou shall be circumcised. All right.
The token of the covenant is thecircumcision of each male. Now this token
or symbol is so important that itis spoken of as it were the covenant

(26:40):
in and of itself. Now it'sspoken of as this is my covenant.
All right. Circumcision will be themark of God's people for generations. When
Jesus inaugurates the New Covenant, physicalcircumcision will no longer play a part,
as we can find in First Corinthianschapter seven, verse nineteen, But circumcision

(27:06):
will still be of significant figurative importance, all right. Now, circumcision,
which is cutting off a small pieceof the flesh, becomes a symbol of
putting off the sins of the fleshin the New Covenant, as we can
find in Colossians chapter two, verseseleven through thirteen. And this circumcision is
not done with hands. Thus itis a spiritual event alright. Now.

(27:33):
Colossians chapter two, verse twelve connectsit with baptism, a physical act,
and yet one in which God isworking spiritually as well, wherein also ye
are risen with him through the faithof the operation of God. All right.
After declaring the covenant he is makingwith Abraham and all of Abraham's descendants,

(28:00):
God now describes what he requires fromAbraham and his offspring. To keep
this covenant. Every male would haveto be circumcised. All right. Now,
let's move it along to Genesis chapterseventeen, verse eleven. And you
shall circumcise the flesh of your forceakin, and it shall be a token
of the covenant betwixt me and you. All right. Now, Circumcision in

(28:25):
a sense is a type of thecross. Blood is shed and separation is
made. All right now, Godmade sweeping covenant promises to Abraham and to
every generation of Abraham's descendants. NowGod describes one thing he will require of
Abraham and his offspring as a symbolof this covenant, circumcision. Every male,

(28:52):
including Abraham, would need to becircumcised by cutting off the force skin.
Now, this was to be asign of the covenant God was making
betw between himself and Abraham. Now, in this instance, the ritual of
circumcision presents several important symbols of ourrelationship to God. The process involves a
circle, a common symbol of eternityand continuity. Through this circle, the

(29:18):
next generation would pass via reproduction. It involves the setting aside or removing of
a naturally born part of the person. It creates a permanent change in the
person making that commitment. It's anoutward visible representation of a spiritual covenant.
It would also be a signed forall those who would come from Him.

(29:41):
All right, now, let's moveit. The law to Genesis chapter seventeen,
verse twelve. And he that iseight days old shall be circumcised among
you every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house
or bought with money of any strangerwhich is not of thy. Right now,
circumcision is to be done on theeighth day after a male child is

(30:04):
born in the covenant family. Andwe can find information on this in Leviticus
chapter twelve, as well as Philippianschapter three. And this will become part
of a ceremony that includes bestowing aname on the child found in Luke chapter
one as well as chapter two.Right now, the law applies both to

(30:26):
natural born sons and sons not ofThy see, and we can find this
information in Genesis chapter seventeen as wellas Exodus chapter twelve. Now, God
has just revealed to Abraham that hewill require that he and every male member
of his household be circumcised. Now, in this way, God's people born

(30:47):
through Abraham would be set apart forhim, and this will be a sign
of the covenant between God and Israelstarting right now, Right now. This
applies to the nation of Israel, not to all Christian beliefs, as the
New Testament will make clear. Allright. Now, let's move it along
to Genesis chapter seventeen, verse thirteen. He that is born in thy house,

(31:10):
and he that is bought with thymoney must need be circumcised. And
My covenant shall be in your fleshfor an everlasting covenant, all right now.
The sign of the covenant is onthe physical bodies of the covenant people,
specifically on the sex organ of themales. Every male of Abraham's household,

(31:32):
both now and for all generations,is to be circumcised. Male children
born into this extended family, includingthose not related by birth or marriage,
or to be circumcised at eight daysover all right now, newly acquired male
slaves are also to be circumcised, and God spells out his intention that his

(31:53):
covenant with Abraham and with the generationsto follow would be in your flesh.
All right now, They would carrythis reminder of their covenant relationship with God
with them one of the most intimatepart of their bodies, one generation after

(32:14):
another forever. This, however,is a requirement specific to this covenant and
for this covenant people. Now,circumcision is not a requirement for those who
are not part of the nation ofIsrael. In fact, in the New

(32:36):
Testament, references to circumcision will becomeshorthand for those who attempt to earn salvation
by good works rather than by faith. We can find this information in Acts
chapter eleven, as well as Galationschapter six. All right, now,
we'll move it along to last, but not least Genesis chapter seventeen, verse
fourteen. And the uncircumcised manchild whoflesh of his foreskin is not circumcised,

(33:02):
that soul shall be cut off fromhis people. He has broken my commandment,
all right now. Here, disobedienceto the covenant leads to exclusion from
the covenant. Community. Now it'snot clear what that penalty involves, whether
it's capital punishment or banishment, orwhether it is done by God or a

(33:25):
human agent. Now at this point, all right, according to this verse,
now God emphasizes that this sign ofthe covenant between God and his people
through Abraham is absolutely necessary, andany uncircumcised male is out of the covenant

(33:45):
period. Point blank. He willnot be cut in to see. If
he will not be cut in theforeskin of his flesh, he will be
cut off from his people. Okay, that's to just clarify it. Now,
God's people through Abraham must be circumcisedor they will not be God's people.

(34:10):
All right. Now this applies tothe Israelites, God's chosen people,
not to the rest of us.It applies to God's chosen people, the
Israelites. All right, Now we'regonna go ahead, and I guess we'll
go ahead and move it along.Do you have the complexion for the protection?

(34:38):
It is now time for our lifereflection? All right? Why did
God require circumcision? Well, I'mglad you asked. God requires circumcision.
Circumcision first as a sign of obediis to him in all matters Secondly,

(35:02):
as a sign of belonging to hiscovenant people. Once circumcised, a man
would be identified as one of God'schosen people, eventually the Jews forever right
now. Third of all, asa symbol of cutting off the old life
of sin, purifying one's heart anddedicating oneself to God. And fourth of

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
