Blessings to all,
Welcome again, I am Jerry, this portion of our study covers:

GOD’S COVENANT part 2

In the previous lesson we learned, as a sign of keeping this covenant, God had a new requirement for Abraham. He and every male of his household, born or bought, and every male in every generation to come, must be circumcised. This is the ritual removal of the foreskin.

Those who were not circumcised would not be included in this covenant between God and Abraham's people. That's already a lot of change for one meeting, but God is not done yet. He truly surprises Abraham, telling him that Sarai's name must also be changed. She will now be known as Sarah, and she and Abraham would have a son after all.

In reverence, or gratitude, or pure surprise, or perhaps all three, Abraham falls facedown and laughs. He's shocked at the mere suggestion of Sarah conceiving and bearing a child. Then Abraham has another thought: What about Ishmael?

God has already given a promise of blessing on Ishmael, spoken to his mother Hagar (Genesis 16:10–12). Here, though God will again promise to bless Ishmael abundantly, the covenant promises between God and Abraham will not pass through Ishmael. Instead, they will pass to Isaac, Abraham's yet-to-be conceived son with Sarah.

That son will have been born by this time the following year. With that, God concludes His revelations and "leaves," at least symbolically giving Abraham an opportunity to make a decision. Abraham's head must have been spinning, but he did not hesitate to begin to obey God.

That very day, he went home and circumcised himself, Ishmael, and the hundreds of other males in his large company. Abraham's immediate obedience is further evidence that he was choosing to trust the Lord and to take Him at His word.

It is time to open our hearts, minds, and souls to the Word Of GOD.

Our scripture will be coming from:

Genesis 17:15-19 KJV
[15] And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.
[16] And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
[17] Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?
[18] And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!
[19] And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

The concept of the Old Covenant iscentral to understanding the relationship between God and
his people in the Old Testament. It refers to the agreement or covenant that
God made with his children, particularlythrough Moses, and is often contrasted with
the New Covenant established through Jesus Christ. In this exploration, we will delve

(04:13):
into the nature of the Old Covenant, its significance in Biblical history, and
the reasons why it is perceived tohave failed, with reference to the Ten
Commandments and supporting passages from the NewKing James version of the Bible. All
right, now, le, let'sgo into understanding the Old Covenant, starting

(04:36):
with the establishment of the Old Covenant. The Old Covenant was established when God
delivered the Ten Commandments to the peopleof Israel at Mount Saniyai following their exodus
from Egypt. All right, now, le, we'll go into the terms
of the covenant. Terms of theOld Covenant was an agreement between God and

(04:58):
his people. And he declared untoyou his covenant, which he commanded you
to perform, even ten commandments, and he wrote them upon two tables of
stone. All right, now, this is Deuteronomy chapter four, verse thirteen.

(05:18):
The Ten Commandments were written by Godhimself, as we can find this
information in Exodus chapter twenty four, verse twelve, as well as thirty four
verse twenty eight and Doudonomy chapter ten, verse four. But all the civil
and ceremonial laws were given through Moses, as we can find in Exodus chapter

(05:39):
twenty four, verse three. Now, this important distinction Moses repeatedly stresses is
in Exodus chapter twenty verse one,Chapter nineteen, chapter twenty one, verse
one, Chapter twenty four, versethree, as well as Deuteronomy chapter five,
verse twenty two. All right, now let's go into it. The

(06:01):
Ten Commandments will start off with therelationship with God. That's what they start
off with. Exodus chapter twenty, verses one through seventeen. You shall have
no other gods before me. Thiscommand is against worshiping any god or anything
other than the Creator. You shallnot make for yourself an idol in the

(06:25):
form of anything in heaven above,or on the earth beneath, or in
the waters below. You shall notbow down to them or worship them.
For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous god, punishing the
children for the sin of the fathersto the third and fourth generation of those

(06:48):
who hate me, but showing loveto a thousand generations of those who love
me. And keep my commandments. This command is against making an idol or
a visible representation of God. Youshould not misuse the name of the Lord
your God, for the Lord willnot hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

(07:14):
This is a command against taking thename of the Lord in vain.
We are not to treat God's namelightly. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping
it holy. Six days you shalllabor and do all your work. But
the seventh day is the Sabbath tothe Lord your God. On it you

(07:34):
shall not do any work, neitheryou nor your son or a daughter,
nor your man servant or a maidservant, nor your animals, nor the
alien within your gates. For insix days the Lord made the heavens and
the earth, the sea, andall that is in them. But he

(07:55):
rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sebbath day and
made it holy. This is acommand to set aside the Sabbath, which
is Saturday, the last day ofthe week in the United States, as
a day of rest dedicated to theLord. All right, now, we'll

(08:16):
get into the relationship with man.Honor your father and your mother, so
that you may live long in theland the Lord give the Lord your God
is giving you. All right now. This is a command to always treat
one's parents with honor and respect. All right now, you shall not murder.

(08:43):
This is a command against the premeditatedmurder of another human being. You
shall not commit adultery. This isa command against having sexual relationships with anyone
other than one's spouse. You shouldnot steal. This is a command against
taking anything that is not one's own. You shall not give false testimony against

(09:07):
your neighbor. This is a commandprohibited testifying against another person falsely. It
is essentially a command against lying. Now, you shall not covet your neighbour's
house. You shall not covet yourneighbour's wife, or his man's servant or
maid servant, his ox, ora donkey, or anything that belongs to

(09:30):
your neighbor. This is a commandagainst desiring anything that is not one's own.
Right now. Reasons for the failureof the Old Covenant human inability to
fulfill the law. While the OldCovenant provided a framework for righteousness and obedience.
It ultimately exposed the moral in ainadequacy of humanity. Now, despite

(09:56):
their best efforts to adhere to thelaw, the people of Israel repeatedly fell
short of God's standards, succumbing toidolatry, im morality, and disobedience.
And this information is found in Romanschapter three, as well as gap Galatians
chapter three. So why did itfail? The fault with the Old Covenant

(10:18):
was with the people, finding foughtwithin them, not with God or his
law. For the love the Lordis perfect, converting the soul. The
testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple Psalms chapter nineteen,
verse seven. The Old Covenant failedbecause it was based upon the faulty promises
and works of the people. Thepeople promised to keep God's law by their

(10:41):
own efforts, not by God's power. They said all that the Lord has
said, we will do and beobedient, and this information is found in
Exodus chapter twenty four, verse seven. But they failed Hebrews chapter eighty seven
through nine. For if that firstcovenant had been faultless, then no place

(11:05):
would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, he
says Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will
make a new covenant with the Houseof Israel and with the House of Judah,
not according to the covenant that Ihave made with their fathers in the

(11:26):
day when I took them by thehand to lead them out of the land
of Egypt. Because they did notcontinue in my covenant, and I disregarded
them, says the Lord. Thusthe failure of the old Covenant was because
it depended on the promises and obedienceof the people of Israel. While God
remained faithful to him his part ofthe covenant, the people proved unfaithful and

(11:48):
disobedient, leading to the breakdown ofthe covenant relationship, as we can find
in Jeremiah chapter thirty one, versethirty two and Hebrews Chapter eight, verses
eight and nine. Now the promiseof the new Covenant, starting off with
Jeremiah chapter thirty one, verses thirtyone through thirty four. Behold, the

(12:13):
days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant
with the House of Israel and withthe House of Judah, not according to
the covenant that I have made withtheir fathers in the day that I took
them by the hand to lead themout of the land of Egypt. My
covenant which they broke, though Iwas a husband to them, says the

(12:35):
Lord. But this is the covenantthat I will make with the House of
Israel. After those days, saysthe Lord. I will put my law
in their minds and write it ontheir hearts. And I will be their
God, and they shall be mypeople. No more shall every man teach
his neighbor, and every man hisbrother, saying know the Lord. They

(13:00):
shall all know me, from theleast of them to the greatest of them,
says the Lord. For I willforgive their iniquity and their sin.
I will remember no more. Alright. The new covenant succeeds because it is
based upon Jesus's promises and his miracleworking power in the heart. God writes

(13:22):
his law in the heart. Forthis is the covenant that I will make,
says the Lord. I will putmy laws into their mind and write
them in their hearts. This isfound in Hebrews Chapter eight, verse ten.
A person's entire nature is changed byGod's grace, so he finds keeping

(13:43):
laws. They find keeping God's lawa pleasure, and this is found in
Romans chapter seven, verse twenty two. The Covenant is based on the same
law the Old Testament Exodus twenty, but it is built on better promises which
are gods. Now in conclusion, the Old Covenant, established through the Ten

(14:07):
Commandments ultimately failed to bring about lastingrighteousness and reconciliation because it was dependent on
the promises and the obedience of thepeople of Israel. Although the New Covenant
is based on the same law ofthe Old Testament is found in Exodus chapter
twenty, it succeeded because it isbuilt on better promises, which are gods.
Through Jesus Christ, the Savior offersforgiveness of sins, transformation of hearts,

(14:33):
and an intimate relationship with God basedon his grace and faithfulness. As
believers in Christ, we are calledto embrace the promise of the New Covenant
and live in faithful obedience to God'swill, empowered by the Holy Spirit and
guided by His words. All right, blessings to all, and welcome again,

(14:56):
I am Jerry. This portion ofour study covers God's Covenant Part two.
In the previous lesson, we learneduh as a sign of keeping this
covenant, God had new required hada new requirement for Abraham. He and
every mail of his household, bornor bought, and every male in every

(15:16):
regeneration to clumb must be circumcised. This is the ritual removal of the foreskin.
Those who were not circumcised UH wouldnot be included in UH. This
covenant between God and Abraham's people. That's already a lot of change for one
meeting. But God has not doneyet. He truly surprises Abraham, telling

(15:39):
him that Sarah's name must also bechanged. She would now be known as
Sarah Rah and she Ad Abraham wouldhave a son after all. In reverence
or gratitude, or pure surprise,or perhaps all three, Abraham's falls face
down and started laughing. Ugh.He's shocked at the mere suggestion of Sarah

(16:03):
conceiving and burying a child. ThenAbraham has another thought, what about Ishmael.
God has already given their promise ofblessing to Ishmael spoken to his mother
Haygd in Genesis chapter sixteen, versesten through twelve. Here, though God
will again promise to bless Ishmael abundantly, the covenant promises between God and Abraham

(16:30):
will not pass through Ishmael. Instead, they will pass to Isi Abraham's yet
to be conceived son with Sea.Now that son would have been born by
this time the following year. Withthat, God concludes his revelations and leaves,
at least symbolically given Abraham an opportunityto make a decision. Abraham's head

(16:56):
must have been spending, but hedid not hesitate to begin to obey God.
That very day he went home andcircumcised himself, Ismael, and the
hundreds of other males in his largecompany. Abraham's immediate obedience is further evidence
that he was choosing to trust theLord and to take him at his word.

(17:18):
All right, it is now timeto open our heart's minds and souls
to the word of God. Ourscripture will be coming from Genesis chapter seventeen,
verses fifteen through nineteen King James version. That is, Genesis chapter seventeen,
verses fifteen through nineteen King James version. Let's read, and God said

(17:47):
unto Abraham, as for Sarah, that wife, thou shalt not call her
name SARAHI, but Sarah shall hername be, And I will bless her
and get the son also of her. Yeay, I will bless her,
and she shall be a mother ofnations. Kings of people shall be of
her. Then Abraham fell upon hisface and laughed, and said, in

(18:11):
his heart, shall a child beborn unto him that is an hundred years
old? And shall Sarah, thatis ninety years old bear? And Abraham
said, unto God, oh,that Ishmael might live before THEE. And
God said, Sarah, thy wifeshall bear thee a son indeed, and

(18:33):
thou shalt call his name Isaac. And I will establish my covenant with him
for an everlasting covenant, and withhis seed after him. All right,
Now that we have gone through theverses, now it is time for our
first breakdown. We'll start off withGenesis chapter seventeen, verse fifteen. All

(18:57):
right, and God said, untoAbraham, as far as far SARAHI thy
wife, thou shalt not call hername Sarai, but Sarah shall be her
name. B Abraham's wife, SarahRai, has not been mentioned in any

(19:19):
of the UH previous communications from GodUH regarding Abraham's having a son, So
this section of scripture is UH afirst in that regard. Now, just
before that happens, she is mentionedas another person whose name is being changed
this time, However, there isno difference in the meaning. Both Sarah

(19:44):
and Sara Rai means princess. Anexample of this meaning is found in First
Kings, Chapter eleven, verse three, where it is given in the plural
form as princesses. Some suggest thatthat the minor change in the name may
be a difference in dialect the unchangedmeaning of fitz Serri's forthcoming status, as

(20:11):
verse sixteen reveals now. In versefive of this chapter, God signaled a
new stage in his relationship with Abramby changing his name to Abraham. Now.
This name is very similar to theHebrew phrase and meaning father of a
multitude, emphasizing that Abraham would befather of nations and that kings would come

(20:34):
from him. Now, God tellsAbraham that his wife, Sarahi's name is
to be changed to Sarah Rahh. Both names apparently mean princess, though in
the following verse God would call herthe mother of nations. While this seems
like a slight change, it marksa significant news season in God's work and

(20:56):
through seal as well. This changewill be especially amazing to Abraham, who
will laugh out loud at the suggestionof Sarah giving birth in Genesis chapter seventeen,
verse seventeen. Later, during thesignificant encounter, God would change the
name of Abraham and Sarah's grandson throughIsaac. He will be renamed from Jacob

(21:23):
to Israel. And that'll be foundin Genesis chapter thirty two, verse twenty
eight. All right, now, let's move it along to Genesis seventeen vers
Genesis chapter seventeen, verse sixteen. And I will bless her and give thee
a son also for her, yay, I will bless her, and she
shall be a mother of nations,Kings of people shall be of her.

(21:48):
Sarah is to be the mother ofthe special son promised to Abraham. For
this to happen at her advanced age, she will need a blessing from the
Lord, and that is what heprovides. The blessing for Sarah for Abraham
and Sarah reaches into the future andincludes kings and royalty among their descendants.

(22:11):
Thus it is quite appropriate for Sarah'schanged name still to mean princes. The
fulfillment for this aspect of the promisebegins when Saul becomes Israel's versus genuine king
more than one thousand years later. The final king in the long line is
Jesus Christ, the King of kings, as we can find in Revelations chapter

(22:34):
seventeen, Rush fourteen. Right now, in the previous verse, God told
Abraham that he was changing Sarah's nameto Sarah. Earlier, God had renamed
Abram to Abraham in indicating that Abrahamwould be the father of nations. Now
God reveals that Sarah's name changes relatedto her own destiny as the mother of

(23:00):
nations. From her as well willcome future kings. Now this is the
first time the text reveals that Sarahis one through whom God will keep his
covenant promise to make able him intoa great nation. All right. Now,
in chapter sixteen, Sarah and Abrahamseem to have decided that the opportunity

(23:22):
for her the birth children to himhad passed. Instead, she would have
a child with him through her slaveHeygard. Now that boy Ishmael is now
thirteen years old, and God revealsthat Sarah will in fact give birth to
a son of her own with Abraham, a notion Abraham and Sarah had completely

(23:44):
abandoned. Now this assumption was sostrong in Abraham's mind that he will literally
fall down laughing at the suggestion thatSarah will be known as the Mother of
nations, as seen in the nextverse. Speaking of move it along to
Genesis seventh, chapter seventeen, verseseventeen. Then Abraham fell upon his face

(24:08):
and lay and said in his heart, shall that child be born unto him
that is an one hundred years old? And shall several that is ninety years
old baar Abraham's reaction to fall tothe ground in laughter. Some have said

(24:32):
that this reflects skepticism similar to Sarah'sin Genesis chapter eighteen. Now this negative
view doesn't fit the man who lookedat the stars of heaven and believed God
in Genesis chapter fifteen, verse six. So we conclude that Abraham combines an
attitude of worship with laughter that resultsfrom an inner joy. You know,

(24:53):
when you look at Romans chapter four, verses nineteen through twenty one kind of
study at But when Abraham looks ahead, he realizes that at the time of
the birth, he would be onehundred years old, and several would be
ninety years old. And this informationis in Genesis chapter seventeen, verses one

(25:15):
and verse twenty four. Now thesefacts cause him to ask himself the two
questions we see here The implications arestaggering, and Abraham knows that the promised
outcome is beyond what is considered normal. All right now. Genesis chapter seventeen,
verse nineteen, not in today's text, should also be mentioned. For

(25:37):
their God informs Abraham that the nameof the Sun is to be Isi,
and the name means he laughs,And it points to the laughter here and
to what carries in the next sectionof our study. Compared to modern times,
it seems that the people of Abraham'sarea lived slightly longer life. But

(26:00):
even then, a one hundred yearold man did not have babies with a
ninety year old woman, all rightnow, the very idea of it was
laughable even at that time. SoAbraham fell face down before the Lord and
laughed to himself. It's notable thatAbraham's disbelieving come man is directly to himself.

(26:22):
Abraham is very directly expressed in doubtthat God can or will follow through
on this particular declaration. Now,it's not that Abraham had stopped believing that
God would keep his promise to givehim countless offspring. He just didn't expect
those offspring to come through Sarahrahi,Sarah Rod. Now they waited a four

(26:48):
decades between receiving the promise and decidingthat God must mean for a child to
come through another wonder. That's whenthey took their own actions, as we
can find in Genus chapter sixteen, verses one and two. Now that had
worked, according to Abraham and hiswife Hagard birth Ishmael, who is now
thirteen years old at this time inGenesis chapter sixteen, verse sixteen. So

(27:12):
God told hegd that Ishmael's offspring wouldbe so numerous as to be uncountable.
And this information came out of Genesischapter sixteen, verses ten through twelve.
So apparently Abraham seems to have decidedthat Ishmael's birth was God's plan to fulfill

(27:37):
his promise. It was not.God said Sarah would become the mother of
nations. Abraham laughed, and thenthe following verse he protested, Now,
this in part explains the specific nameGod chooses for this son of promise,
Isaac, which means he laughs. All right. Now, let's move it
along to Genesis chapter seventeen, verseeighteen, and Abraham said, unto God,

(28:03):
oh, that Ishmael might live beforethem. Abraham asked the Lord that
Ishmael might have some place and notbe completely left out. Abraham found God's
promise in the previous verse inconceivable. In fact, as I stated before,
he literally found it far down, laughing funny right now. It was beyond

(28:26):
imagining that at one hundred year oldman and a ninety year old woman could
have a baby in Abram's mind orAbraham's mind, it was also unnecessary because
he already had a son, thoughit was not through Sarah. Ishmael was
a man of thirteen years old,so his birth mother Hagard had received a

(28:49):
promise from God that Ishmael's descendants wouldbe exceedingly numerous, just that God had
promised Abraham. So Abraham could pictureit all, you know, he could
see Ishmael, his son, becomingthe nations God had promised, receiving God's
blessing, fulfilling God's plan. Ifonly Abraham said to God, if only

(29:14):
Ishmael could live under your blessing. In the next verse, God will respond
to Abraham in a gracious example ofgentle correction. God will reply with no,
but with a yes. But okay. God's response is gentle, but
it is not without some level ofirony. In it, God would declare

(29:37):
a name for this soon to besun, one which will forever remind Abraham
of his reaction. The boy isto be named Isaac, which literally means
he laughs. Oh. All right, now the last, but not least,
let's move it along to Genesis chapterseventeen, verse nineteen. And God

(30:00):
God said Sarah, Sarah, rah, thy wife shall bear thee a son.
Indeed, and thou shalt call hisname Isaac, and I will establish
my covenant with him for an everlastingcovenant, and with his seed after him.
Now the name Isaac means laughter, hahaha. The covenant is to be

(30:23):
established with Isaac and not with Ishmael. Now this completely shoots down the contention
of the Muslims that Ishmael was thechosen one, unless you don't believe in
the Bible, though Isaac or throughIsaac, I shall say the Lord Jesus
Christ, the Savior of mankind, would ultimately come. Now. The previous

(30:48):
verse showed ninety nine year old Abraham'sreaction to God's revelation that his baron eighty
nine year old wife Sarah would bearhim a son. After Abraham's immediate response
was disbelieving laughter found in Jenesis chapterseventeen, verse seventeen, and beyond laughter.

(31:10):
Abraham's first coherent thought was for histhirteen year old son, born through
his servant Hagar, If only Ishmaelmight live under your blessing. Now God
responds with a yes. But Godwould reveal in the following verses that he
would bless Ishmael. However, Ishmaelwould not be the child of the covenant

(31:34):
promised God had given to Abraham.Instead, that fulfillment would come through Sarah
and her previously inconceivable son, whomGod commands to be named Isaac. It
was with Isaac and his offspring thatGod would establish his everlasting covenant. Now
this name is not without a purpose, which Isaac means he laughs, all

(31:56):
right. Now, Abraham's first responseto the idea of having a son with
his ninety year old wife was justthat he laughed about it. All right.
Sarah too will laugh at the ideain Genesis chapter eighteen, verse twelve.
Now their son's name will serve asa permanent reminder of how God can

(32:17):
fulfill promises which our limited experiences areimpossible. All right, m M.
Do you have their complexion for theprotection it is now time for our life

(32:40):
reflection. How could Abraham doubt God? It seemed incredible that he and severl
in their advanced years, could havea child. Abraham, the man God
considered righteous because of his faith, had trouble believing God's promise to him.

(33:00):
Despite his doubts, However, Abrahamfollowed God's commands. Even people of great
faith may have doubts when God seemsto want them possible, and you begin
to doubt his leading, be likeAbraham, focus on God's commitment to fulfill
his promises to you, and thenfollow through and complete the task he has

(33:23):
given you. All right, butfor now, this is what God's Covenant
Part two he is all about. And with that being said, we will
close out with prayer. Heavenly Father, Son, Holy Spirit, thank you

(33:43):
for blessing us with another building bloodfrom this Holy Bible slitty session. We
pray that you will visit us andmake your presence known in our life and

environment through prayer and through acts oflove and compassion. Let your kingdom come

presence. We reprint, we print. We repent of any pride or personal

O Lord, our Strength and ourRedeemer. We continue to pray these things

That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
