Welcome again, I am Jerry. This portion of our study covers Hagar
Flees, the plight of Hagar,Part one, the moral implications that you
(07:57):
and I read into this or notquite here in the historical record, Abram
and Sarai were brought up in airof the Caldi's, where this was a
common practice, and the moral angleis not the theme that for them was
so wrong. The terrible thing isthat they just not they just did not
(08:20):
believe God, you know, theydid not take God's word as they should
have. And the wrong that theycommitted by Abram taking sara made Hey,
God was a sin, and Godtreated it as such. But today we
reverse the emphasis and say that takinga concubine is a sin, but we
(08:41):
do not pay too much attention tothe unbelief part of it all right now,
Yet the unbelief was the major sinhere. That is it locks blacker
than the other you know, itwas a lot blacker than the other color
the sin, I mean, youknow whatever. But anyways, with Abram
(09:05):
in his mid eighties, SARAHI hasapparently become tired of waiting. In her
eyes, it is time to goto plan be given her Egyptian servant,
girl Hagard, to Abram in orderto finally obtain a child. Apparently,
if a wife was unable to bearchildren, it was considered appropriate for her
(09:26):
to give a servant to her husbandas another wife, with their understanding that
any children born to that servant wouldrightfully become the child of the original wife.
In a disappointing moment of faithfulness,Abram agrees and Hagard quickly becomes pregnant.
Then the plan unravels, Hagard elevatedfrom slave to wife, and now
(09:48):
birth mother begins to treat her mysterySarah with content, perhaps Hagard wondered what
she and Abram needs Sarah for.Perhaps she resented the idea that her child
would belong to SARAHI. In anycase, that the dynamic changes, Sarah's
(10:09):
feelings about her plan change as well. She makes it clear to Abram that
she holds him responsible for this conflict, and she demands that he makes clear
that Sarai remains in authority over Hagard. Again, Abram agrees with that approval.
Sarah deals harshly with Hagard, soharshly that Hagard runs off into the
(10:33):
wilderness alone. May be fearful forher life. God, however, will
not allow Hagard and her child tobe discarded so easily. The Angel of
the Lord, perhaps Y'a always himself, finds Hagard resting at a spring along
the road leading back to her homelandof Egypt. He gives to Hegar a
(10:54):
command and a promise. First, the Angel of the Lord tells Hagar to
return and submit to Sarah. Thenhe reveals that she will bury son Ishmael
and that his offspring will become sonumerous as to be uncountable. However,
(11:15):
he will be a wild donkey ofa man and his life and the lives
of his descendants will be marked byconflict with every one. In spite of
this mixed news, Hagar is astonishedand grateful that God has heard her.
The name of her son, Ishmaelmeans God hears. She names the Lord
(11:39):
who heard her cry and came toher, the God of seeing, and
names the well bar lahroi, wellof the living one who sees. All
right now, Hagar returns to Abramand SARAHI and Ishmael is. While God
(12:01):
has given a guarantee of blessing toHatgard and Israael, this boy is not
the child of the promise. Thiswas not how God planned to accomplish his
will, and the son born fromAbram's second wife is not the fulfillment of
the Lord's vows to Abram. Anotherthirteen years will passed before God will fully
(12:24):
reveal his plan to Abraham and toAbram. Right now, given he had
Sarah, their long awaited son.All right, now, it is time
to open our hearts, minds, and souls to the word of God,
and our scripture will be coming fromGenesis chapter sixteen, verses six through ten.
(12:54):
That is, Genesis chapter sixteen, verses six through ten King James version
Let's red. Abram said, untoSARAHI, behold, thy maid is in
thy hand. Do to her asit pleaseth Thee. And when SARAHI dealt
hardly with her, she fled fromher face. And the Angel of the
(13:18):
Lord found her by a fountain ofwater in the wilderness, by the fountain
and the way to shore, andhe said, heygard, Sayah's maid.
Whence camest thou, and whither wiltthou go? And she said, I
flee from the face of my mistressSarah. And the Angel of the Lord
said, unto her, returned tothy mistress, and submit thyself under her
(13:43):
hands. And the Angel of theLord said, unto her, I will
multiply thy seed exceedingly that it shallnot be numbered for multitude. Abram said,
unto SARAHI, Okay, now wewill go into our world. The
scripture breakdown, our verse breakdown, all right, and we're gonna start with
(14:09):
Genesis chapter sixteen, verse six.But Abram said, until SARARII behold,
thy maid is in thy hand, due to her, as it pleased Thee.
And when SARAHRAI dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face all
(14:31):
right now. The scripture doesn't tellus what SARAHI did now. The text
does suggest that Sara was requesting Abramto settle the question of whether Hagard was
still bound under SARRAI by a servantmaster authority, all right now. Sarai
was the one who had given Hagardto be with Abram, to be Abram's
(14:52):
wife in the first place, inhopes of getting a child for herself.
SARAHI did not apparently anticipate that Abram'snew wife would come to look on her
mysteries with content. When sir RIIcame to Abram to hold him responsible for
(15:13):
this imbalance and power, Abram gaveSarah exactly what she wanted. He tells
SARRII to do to Hagard as shepleases and make it clear that the woman
is still under Sirri's full authority.Now. Abram might not have anticipated how
harsh Sirrii's response to Hagard would be. Scripture doesn't It doesn't specifically reveal all
(15:37):
the emotions in play. Perhaps Abramwas feeling guilty for agreeing to the plan
in the first place. Sarah certainlyseems to be holding over his head that
he embraced this woman even though itwas at her own urging. And in
addition, Sarah was likely stunned withgrief, a grief and uh jealousy that
(16:04):
another woman had so easily and quicklybecome the barrier of Abram's child, something
she had always hoped to be.Even worse, this woman had become smug
and contemptuous to of her. Whateverthe feelings Sir I seemed to have had,
(16:26):
she leashed them on Hagar by dealingwith her ho harshly, so hagard
ran and possibly possibly even uh fearingfor her own life. All right,
now, we'll move on. Moveit along to Genesis chapter sixteen, verse
seven, and the Angel of theLord found her by a fountain of water
(16:48):
in the wilderness, by the fountainin the way to share All right now,
here every uh evidence is this Angelof the Lord, but it's none
other than pre incarnate appearance of theLord Jesus Christ. Now pregnant and alone,
(17:12):
Hagar escapes into the wilderness. Sheescapes to a spring on the road
to Sheriff. Hagar may have beenheading back to her homeland of Egypt,
and the Angel of the Lord foundher by that spring, and this angel
(17:37):
of Yahwey may have been a theophonygod taking on a human form on earth
to accomplish a specific purpose. Alternative, alternatively, this might have been some
other angel or angelic bed. Thecontext the phrasing of this chapter seems to
(18:02):
suggest that this was in fact theLord himself, and we can find information
on this in Genesis chapter sixteen, verses ten and thirteen. All right,
let's move it along to Genesis chaptersixteen, verse eight. And he said,
(18:22):
Hagard Sarah's maid, whence camest aloudand with a will thou go?
And she said, I flee fromthe face of my mistress Sarah. All
right now. In running away,Hagar is most likely heading back to her
homeland in Egypt, and we canfind information on this in Genesis chapter twelve,
(18:48):
verses fifteen through sixteen, as wellas chapter sixteen verse one. All
right, now, along the way, the Angel of the Lord finds her
at his spring beside the road, and he immediately identifies that he knows her,
addressing her as Hagar, the servantof Sarai. He asked where she
(19:15):
has come from and where she isgoing things he likely already knows as well.
Hagar answers. Honestly, she isfleeing from Sarahi. The Angel of
Yahweh, which seems to be theLord himself according to Genesis chapter sixteen,
verses ten and thirteen, well, have some surprising instructions and prophecies for Hagar
(19:37):
in the following verses. All right, so let's move it along to Genesis
chapter sixteen, verse nine. Andthe Angel of the Lord said, unto
her, return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. All
right. Now, has she notobeyed, she would no doubt have died
(20:02):
in the wilderness. Now, first, the Angel of the Lord tells Hagard
and return to sir Rai and tosubmit to her. In the following verses,
he will give her a surprise andglimpse into her unborn son's future.
All right. Now, the nationwho comes from this son, Ishmael,
will be influential, but marked byperpetual conflict. Abram and sir Rii's attempt
(20:26):
to hurry God's promises will have drasticconsequences for human history. All right.
Now, let's move it along toGenesis chapter sixteen, verse ten. Last,
but not least, all right, and the Angel of the Lord said,
unto her, I will multiply thyseed exceedingly, that it shall not
(20:48):
be numbered for a multitude. However, the Lord said nothing about faith,
because there was no faith in theheart of Hagard, and neither would there
be any in the heart of herson Israel mm hm. After telling Hagar
to return and submit to sel right, the Angel of the Lord now makes
(21:14):
a familiar promise to this slave girl. All right. It's familiar because it's
the same promise the Lord made theAbram himself multiple times over the last few
chapters, specifically that this Angel ofthe Lord will multiply Hagard's offspring so that
they become uncountable. Of course, only the Lord himself could likely make such
(21:41):
a promise. This is a primaryreason most scholars presume this Angel of your
way to be a Theophanan, theLord himself in a physical form. All
the same, this child is notthe promised heir for Abram, and or
not in her the blessings which Godhas guaranteed for Abram's descendants. In the
(22:06):
following verses, this promise is followedby a prophecy explaining that the future is
not entirely good news for Hagar andher unborn son Ishmael. All right,
do you have the complexion for theprotection. It is now time for our
(22:32):
life reflection. All right, SirRai was angry with Abram because she blamed
him for her problems with Hagar. In her anger, she treated Hagar harshly
enough to cause her to run away. Anger, especially when it arises from
our own shortcomings, can be dangerous. Hagar was soon to be an abandoned
(22:57):
single mother. He had no voice, no power or authority. Once a
slave, then a woman of privilegecarrying Abram's child, she was understandably angry
to be treated again as a slave. But her plight led to a deeper
spiritual awakening, and Angel spoke toher personally, saying that the Lord noticed
(23:19):
her and heard her distress. Theexperience led Hagard to call God, you
are the God who sees me.No matter how deep your troubles are,
or how big and mess your familyis in, God notices you and hears
you, bringing good out of yourdesperate prayers. Hagard was running away from
(23:45):
her mistress and her problems, andthe Angel of the Lord gave her this
advice. First to return and faceher ride the cause of her problem,
and second to submit to her towork on her attitude towards Sarah I.
No matter how justified it may havebeen, running away from problems rarely solves
(24:07):
them. It is wise to returnto our problems, face them squarely,
except God's promise of help, correctour attitudes, and act as we should.
All right, but for now, that is what Hagard flees. The
(24:27):
plight of Hagard Part one is allabout all right. Now. With that
being said, we will close outthis session with prayer. Heavenly Father,
