Speaker 2 (00:19):
Sports Spectacular Larry Smith, Brad Sturdy, Mike keg Lee, Glad
you're here with this And I can't believe we are
closing out another month and man, March madness is right here.
Fellas lots coming up. It is a senior day for
the women on Sunday. They're hosting Michigan with a lot
of stakes. They go into the big tournament. We'll talk
about that. Genesis Bryant will be joining us, so one
(00:40):
of the seniors we will be honoring at State Farm
Center at what a final year she has had in
the Orange Blue. Can we get her thoughts? Talk? Also,
it's been a big golf season already for the Aliini
will talk about that. We'll look ahead as well to
this big ten race for the Fellas. Illinois not gonna
get a double bye and they'll be starting their week
(01:00):
on Thursday and Indy instead here in a couple of weeks,
but who will get those double byes? Really a great race.
They're at the top we'll talk about that as well.
Lots on the way here. But first off, Philla is,
let's start the beginning. Let's first recap history. I know
it hurts. Let's just rip that band aid off real
quick and we'll just tear the scab off and get
out of the way. The Duke game started. We were
(01:21):
there and I think at one point I turned to
you and said, please make it stop.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
I tried to. I was telling people back home, you
don't understand how great. That's how great you had it
because you could change the channel when you're in the arena.
You had to sit there and watch it, and it
was like it was just painful and there was nowhere
to go.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
It wasn't any better watching it on TV. And I
did keep the channel on, and I have to say,
it's not the worst I've felt after an the line
I lost, But clearly it was the worst a line
I lost that we've seen.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Well, Mike, we missed you because we found our sorrows
in pizza after the game, so we found the hotel
and yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
That would have been great.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, yeah, it was Sturdy's idea. He twisted my arm.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
There's peer pressure. I forced them deep pizza.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
Yeah, so Brad had three pieces of pizza and Larry
had two bites of his.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
It was good stuff. It was good stuff, but one
ten sixty seven, worst loss in Illinois history. And this
is one of those years where you know, you look
through it was a night that look it was even
worse in person. But let me say this though, hats
off to a line nine nation. The way they came
through Brad, I thought it was maybe sixty forty. I thought,
you know, some people on the guys dot com board
thought it was even fifty to fifty or even Illinois
(02:46):
was was it had a larger crowd.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah, I think Illinois fans were really more vocal before
the game until the game actually started and then they
were like, oh, I'm just gonna drink over here. So no,
but I think, yeah, I think it was. I I
said maybe fifty five forty five, sixty forty somewhere in there.
But I mean, Duke, you know, brings an awesome credit.
Was the largest crowd they've ever had for a single
college basketball game at Madison Square Garden because there was
(03:10):
a sellout and normally they usually have two or three games.
They don't have one game for these events. So one
game event like that selling out is just insane when
you think about.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
It, you know, Brad, the bottom line is is I
think historically speaking, the gnashing of teeth is relatively quiet activity.
So I didn't make a lot of noise back there.
That was truly a painful moment. At the same time,
you know, there's there should be no opponent in the
(03:39):
country that the aligne I will be overly impressed by
after seeing the talent on Duke and the way they
played that particular evening.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, totally agree with that. By the way, if you
if you liked the idea of Illinois playing a late
February game against a team like Duke, guess what you're
in luck because Brad under would sit on the record
over the weekend that they're already working on twenty twenty six.
There's some speculation out there by some reporters that it
may be another Duke Illinois game, if not at Madison
(04:11):
Square Garden, maybe at Chicago or Atlanta or some other spot.
So be prepared for this. I think it's great for
the program. I mean, look, we can't help the injuries
and the illness, and they weren't prepared whatever. But I
think if they had played this game six weeks ago,
even if they played a month from now, I think
it's a much different outcome because Illinois will be a
different team.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Yeah, I agree with that. I'm not a huge fan
of it because but I understand why you want to
do it and why it's good for your program. Let's
be honest, Brad Underwood put together a schedule this year
that was just a complete gauntlet when you consider who
they played, from Tennessee to Missouri to Arkansas, playing the
Alabama I mean and now Duke out of conference. I mean,
(04:53):
not many people play that level of out of conference
schedule and then then go into your conference and beat
up on each other for twenty games.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Yeah, it's a tough schedule for a team that is
that young. One wonders had they been able to get
you know, a couple of players, you know, an experienced,
you know, battle hardened guard or a you know, a
battle hardened for if things would have been a little
bit easier because you've got a lot of a lot
(05:22):
of talent on this team, but not a lot of
NCAA experience. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
The one thing that we didn't experience that you watching
at a home did experience was we didn't hear the
name Cooper flag fifty times in the first half, as
I was told that he didn't do much because Colin
Boswall did a great job of shutting him down. Everyone
else did well against Illinois. He was pretty partisan there
in the in the first half, and so therefore we
didn't hear Cooper Flag. Cooper Flag. Cooper Flag wasn't in
(05:48):
the game to take that ball out right there, John
So But anyway, but yeah, so here's a great thing though.
But the align I so many people over the weekend
asking well, is the NCAA tournament now in jeopardy? And
we collectively agree the answer is no. They come back
and they beat Iowa in a big way on Tuesday night,
and guys as big as the offense was finally clicking
in some ways, I was more impressed with the defensive
(06:10):
effort against a very good offense like Iowa brings every year.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Yeah, Iowa can score. Fran McCaffrey has a history of
being great on offense at Iowa. It doesn't matter who
he has. He puts guys in position to succeed and
only did a great job of guarding them and making
it difficult for them, held him to the lowest point
total of the season with sixty one points. They you know,
they just it was the team that play played defense.
So the first like, you know, six weeks of the
(06:35):
season or two months of the season before, they just
fell off a cliff defensively and they looked like that
team again. And they but they what I like is
they actually made adjustments defensively. They changed a little bit
and they had everybody in practice for two days before
they started hedging soft heedging ball screens. They started getting
in gaps, they started digging a little bit more, you know,
(06:55):
stunting and showing and recovering, and it got in rotations
a few times. But it was a much better defensive
you know, just more activity on defense. And I think
that also makes you play more aggressive on the other
end of the floor too, because you're not just kind
of it's not going through the motions, it's literally getting
after it and playing it.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Yeah. And and Larry, I hope you enjoy the gift
I sent you in the mail. It's a bumper sticker
w w CFD. What would Cooper flag do? I will
tell you that we also look at it that game
with Iowa. I think the discipline that the team showed
was really good because they were they I think defensive
discipline lends itself to maybe being a little bit more
(07:36):
value valuing the ball on offense. And I also thought
Illinois gave up one lead significantly and and let Iowa
back into it, and then once they popped the lead
up they were able to not let it get to
that close again, you know, for the most part. And
I thought that was a big difference. You know, You've
(07:57):
you've seen games where Illinois gives up the big lead
and going down the stretch, they were able to actually
stretch it out, you know.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
But there were a lot of lineup changes, a lot
of like Bradmage, a lot of different things they did.
We saw Will Riley in the lineup, not as a
replacement for kJ which is previous starts for that, but
it replaced Benham Rickhouse. I thought he was I thought
Will was really good defensively and that's not a strong
point for him, but but he did a great job.
Rickouse comes off the bench. She was fantastic. Hit both
(08:25):
of his three point attempts, had three rebounds, three steals
in a season low fourteen minutes. You know, he's going
to play more against Michigan. We'll going to that in
just a moment here. But I thought that only five turnovers.
They forced sixteen turnovers that season, high tying for Iowa.
They're just there were a lot of really good things.
I still shot a few more threes and then I
would have liked but you made some and and and
(08:48):
you shot more twos than threes. And that's to your point, Ratt.
You've said this that if those threes are going in now,
they're really dangerous because if each just sits there. And
just how many times did he on the pick and
roll just get a bounce pass to a cutter for Yeah,
I mean I think he had five assists, five or
six assists in the game.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Yeah, they were able to you know, when they're able
to lift him and they have to come out and
guard him, it opens cuts. And they were actually cutting
off the ball. You saw guys taking And the last
time I remember them actually doing that well was against
Ohio State. That's been a while ago. Remember that game,
And so they had the back door cuts and those things,
and guys were you know, maybe it'd be a screen
and then they'd slip the screen and things like that,
(09:25):
and they had the spacing to do it. So it
was really impressive there. I thought Humrikows had a good
game in the sense that that's a better role for him, right,
I mean, playing thirty five minutes is probably more a
big ask for him. So what I like is that
they are they're making adjustments, they're finding the right teams.
I do think he'll have played like we he's to
play more against Michigan because Michigan is huge and so
they're gonna have to play maybe more size against them,
(09:47):
But it wouldn't be I wouldn't be shocked to see
Boswell on Wolf for part of this game too. He
gives up, you know, ten inches, but he's physical, he's tough,
and wolflex play on the perimeter.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Two. Yeah, Humrick House was an excellent study and being
asked to do what you can do in that game
and playing the amount of minutes and how he was
utilized works much better for him. And certainly as an
ALIGNI fan, I appreciated the ability for the ALIGNI to
get that twenty point victory because if you look back
(10:19):
to Wednesday night, you know Michigan State had to throw
in a prayer from half court to win a game.
And I like my ALIGNI wins where they are not
last second shots that keep me on the edge of
my seat. I like the twenty minute I cruise as
a fan into a w well.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
I think we as a fan base, we deserve that
we do what we've been through for the past six weeks.
Absolutely lowest point total. Illinois had not held a team
under seventy since that route at Indiana ninety four to
sixty nine back on January eleven. That's how long it
had been. We love this defense being back. Okay, So
now we've got Michigan coming up, the Wolverines right there
(10:59):
battling for the for the number one spot in the conference,
number one seed in the tournament coming up. That's on Sunday,
CBS game two forty five local time in Champagne. Listen.
They got two great days. We'll hear in a moment
here from Brad Underwood about what he thought about how
the guys responded from the Duke debacle. Now a few
(11:21):
more days not only get further away from the flu
and all that, but to work on the cohesiveness. This
team looked like they were in sync against Iowa, and
I'm now a little more encouraged about their chances of
pulling off an upset in Ann Arbor.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Yeah, Michigan's one of the Michigan's an odd team when
you look at them. Obviously, they've had a great season.
They're twenty one and six, you know, going in with
the twenty plus wins and near the top of the
Big Ten standings. But at the same time, they've won
like they've won like seven games in February or since
in last six weeks or four weeks, whatever it was,
(11:54):
and they're all by four points or less. Like every game,
every win they have is like three points, four points,
three points, two points, three points, three points. Nebraska game
set basketball back the other last week, you know, but
ways because they No. One's forty nine and forty six.
But I they just are a team that you could
hang around with because they don't really blow people out.
(12:16):
So if you can hang around, you've got a chance
to win on the road. That's all you can really
ask for.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
Yeah. I like the way the Big Ten brought in
Bruce Weber and he could just help move from the
corner during that whole game was fantastic. Yeah, Michigan scares
me because they've got those big guys in the middle. Uh.
And I'd feel a lot better if I was Illinois,
if Morez was there. At the same time, they're not
(12:41):
necessarily just a rock em soccam physical team, and they
also are not a they're not a consistent team. So
there's there's no reason that ILLINOI couldn't get it all
together and beat him. But Illinois has the same consistency
problems that we speak of for Michigan.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Yeah, and that's a thing too. You gotta come up strong.
You know, you got the wood, the one good win,
get another one. Let's build this like they were saying.
Colin Boswell said, coach just said go one and oh
each day, and so hopefully they can do that. One
more thought we would get to before we take a
quick time out. My Res Jahnson junior, by the way,
still with that broken wrist. But some good news we
heard of the night where he actually has a new cast.
(13:21):
Coach said that the other cast had had gotten too big,
which means a swelling went down and so again the
team kind of hoping for the a return for the
big ten opener. We don't know it's still too early,
but that is two weeks away.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
Maybe I tell you he brings up even if it's
only for ten fifteen minutes a game. Just bring physical presidence,
have another guy who can battle down low and give
Tommy a blow, and then you know you can match
up with a team like Michigan much better for stretches.
So yeah, I think it's really important to get him
back in the Big Ten tournament so he's ready to
go in the NCAA tournament as well.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
I'd like to see him wear a cast and then
be like WWE, where all of a sudden he's using
the cast and then we have X ray it to
make sure it's legal. That would be a lot more fun.
But I'm telling you one thing MOREZ with one hand
is a scary dude. So let's hope he can be
healthy and get out there and play.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Yeah, yeah, big fans of his A freshman just is
then such a tremendous job, his role growing as we've
watched this season develop six', nine two fifty five kid
out Of chicago mister basketball and hopefully again can return
and just pick up where he left off. Before good
news is he's conditioning right now he wasn't able to
do that for the first ten. Days that's now, happening
(14:33):
and so again we'll keep monitoring that and hopefully he's
back For Indy here in a couple of, weeks we're
back with more hoops. Talking a moment we'll hear From Brett.
Underwood also big moment in, golf a couple of big
moments already in THIS pga. Season we already know one
of the best programs in the entire, Country Mike. Small

Know Nick hardy emerging and so a lot of the
guys on THE Pga tour now Are Illinois. Gratz so
(17:03):
that's pretty pretty cool to. See the other thing is
like the, story The campbell story is just a fantastic
one kind of a you know how he grunt was
the grind that he went through to get to this
point and then to finally get the. WIN i, mean
what a GREAT i, mean that's great selling point for
this line at golf.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
Program, yeah it's it's really kind of hard there basically
have so many selling. Points the only thing they can't
point to is a national. Title but there's so many
developmental reasons why you would want to go play for
this program that it's it's apparent if you want to
be a good golfer in college and you have that
great amount of, Talent Mike small is the guy you
(17:41):
want to play for for numerous, reasons and and you
know there's there's a reason why he has all those
trophies and he's got to build an extra room in
his house to put all His coach of The year.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Awards he's over like a dozen, now, yeah, yeah they.
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Should just call it The Mike Small award After small
wins the thirtieth Annual Mike Small.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Award exactly, exactly by the, way we should say that
this Year's alani men's team we had coach on a
few weeks ago before they went out To hawaii and
they finished tied for fifth out there playing On. Kawhi
and again as they begin the spring portion of their,
schedule don't forget they're going to host THE ncaa regional
right In, champagne and that's we find An atkins of
(18:27):
course that we've played before and love it over. There
great job again to the the golf, team. Guys back
to basketball and WHAT i get your. Thoughts we'll play
a little bit of sound here From Brad underwood in
his comments after the, game and we'll talk more on
the backside about. This he starts off just by giving
praise and how the team responded after they came off
the plane Last saturday night Early sunday morning after suffering
(18:51):
the worst loss in program. History we'll talk more about
the other things in terms of changing. Lineups he talks
about as, well after we listen to, THIS.
Speaker 6 (18:59):
I think volumes to. THEM i had you don't just show.
Speaker 7 (19:04):
UP i mean we were. YOUNG i don't know what we.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
You, know two or three years ago that team had
no ability to respond like this. One and they just
their their their, confidence their their.
Speaker 7 (19:17):
Swagger they still have. It you.
Speaker 6 (19:21):
KNOW i THINK i told you the other. DAY i,
said you, know we were two and twenty six the other.
Night the good thing is that percentages.
Speaker 7 (19:27):
Are in our. Favor we're gonna make.
Speaker 6 (19:30):
Shots and and we we said there to look at
their numbers and go through their numbers and. Shooting And
i'm sure you guys Think i'm. Crazy we make them like.
Crazy go watch her warm. Up sometimes we don't miss.
Draining the other, day make forty straight threes in the
corner Of Madison Square. Garden we'll lead. Shooting and so
(19:51):
it's it's the odds are in our. Favor we're going
to start making. Shots and you go through, it and you,
know now we've we've hopefully made some tweaks that stressed
that importance a little. Less now we're got to get
back on the, bollards which we didn't do to night.
Speaker 7 (20:09):
Coaching pin came off the bench tonight up up three.
Stales just want to get your thoughts on just him
and just slut inside of The thame.
Speaker 6 (20:15):
Positions, yeah he is splitting, time and that's that's one
of the things that.
Speaker 7 (20:21):
You know with mares, out he's playing some small.
Speaker 6 (20:24):
Ball five and and so one of the changes we
made offensively his new reaction with it helps him.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
There.
Speaker 6 (20:33):
You, know putting him more aggressively in ball screens with
something that we've been trying to. Do, uh you, know
he's gone from being kind of a a help guy
that he. Was now he's he's we call him dorks in.
Practice you, know he's not guarding those guys. Anymore he's
(20:54):
got he's got a. Guard so he's gonna play wall
streets a good. Amount and he's, uh he's got the,
ability he's got the, brains and he's very smart to
be able to handle.
Speaker 7 (21:05):
That but three, steals.
Speaker 6 (21:08):
You, know two few from three and and and there's
no doubt we're gonna need.
Speaker 7 (21:13):
Him he's he's a big.
Speaker 8 (21:14):
Party might you had to use a bunch of different
lineups train lines out of necessity BECAUSE i just well
they went into the Answering will and and wanted to Them.
Speaker 6 (21:26):
Iowa iowa, matchups you, know with with basically them playing
four perimeter players a. LOT i thought it was just
it was just it was a really good Matchup will
Guard Trey, orrie you, know and then and then you,
know we had we kept size With trey and And
(21:47):
uh And bam And castro's on those other three perimeter,
guys and so that.
Speaker 7 (21:54):
Was just pretty.
Speaker 8 (21:56):
Easy and then he kind of stuck with that group
quite a bit tonight and one of those guys playing
thirty three.
Speaker 7 (22:01):
Plus so what did you like about what those five gave?
Speaker 6 (22:04):
You plus twenty eight plus nineteen plus nineteen plus nineteen
plus seventeen really nothing beyond that they played great. Together
and when you get that plus minus and It will
was plus twenty eight on.
Speaker 7 (22:25):
The, court and you, know it's it's you, KNOW.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
I think when you get down, here you get the
five guys that play the best, together and you play
them and you write, them and you know it might be.
Different it might Be ben some, night it might Be dragon some.
Night what it, is BUT i thought that that group
played great together the good. Start it was a real
(22:49):
plus as. Well so, chemistry just great chemistry out of those.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Sides, yeah it was like almost like they had the
what you must call, it the come To jesus, meeting,
RIGHT i, mean this was it like it's time for
us to figure this. Out The. DUKE i think that
kind of The duke game made them, Think, okay we've
got to make some, Changes we've got to change do
some things. Differently and they. Did they came out and you,
know found a lineup that they, like found a you,
(23:17):
know a rotation that they, like found some tweak some
things on, offense tweak some things on, defense and had
a couple days of, practice WHICH i think is a
big part of why they had to wait so long
to finally make some. Tweaks and so you hope they
are riding the ship at the right time of the.
Speaker 4 (23:32):
Season, Yeah and that part about connectiveness is really hard to.
Do it's bad enough to have to practice like four
on four or three on three because that's not a basketball.
Game you, know you don't have in THE. Nfl you
know that they don't practice it with you, know flag
football with eight, guys you, know and then show up
(23:53):
On sunday and we're playing eleven with. Pads so that,
part if you've ever run a practice before as a
NAME au, coach is very frustrating when people can't get.
There and then when you get some guys are sick
and they're not there and you put in something new
and you have to educate somebody when they, return but
they haven't had time to practice. It but there's some
(24:14):
guy From purdue trying to stop. YOU i, mean it
gets really. Complicated so we should see a natural upward
rise for The illinois basketball program just based on this.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
Alone, Well i've got a couple of chances on the
national network stage left in the regular season before getting
onto The Big ten tournament In. Indie sunday's game is
ON cbs two forty five tip off for Man Arbor Chrystler,
arena and then Next friday they're at home On fox
and that primetime game to take On. Purdue always a
great matchup the Boiler, makers you, know by the, way
(24:47):
entering the week on that losing. Streak again everyone's rank they're,
playing but right now except For, indiana they're struggling just a.
Bit but, again a chance to get, healthy get a
win in one of, those and all of a, sudden the
conversation turns and we had to people begin to understand, that,
yeah maybe they really were sick and injured and.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
Whatever so, yeah you hope that's the. Case and you,
ALSO i think people as as you see them when
NOW i think maybe that that didn't me move them
up on a seed line too in the instant return
because they'll, say wait a, second now they're, Healthy look
how good they're. Playing and so it made me, say,
oh so that's why they. Lost and and you, know
it could really make change the mindset a little.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
Bit and and stay off that eight nine. Line that's
the LINE i really don't and you, know want to
see him. Play you, know your reward for winning a
game is. Auburn so there's there's a lot of things.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
Is not a reward not a, REWARD i.
Speaker 4 (25:41):
KNOW i, know and you just you, know, like, oh
Hey duke, again this is very this is. Awesome but,
yeah so they've got. It they got to elevate that
every every level you could move that thing up is.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Important, YEAH i mean a lot of the coming into
the week after The duke, game a lot of the
big bracketologists have them around the eight, line some the
SEVEN i still think they get a win in these next,
two get a win or two in The big, ten
they'll be up to a possibly a, six and so
you can avoid. That AND i guarantee you there's no
three seat out, there there's no two seat out there
(26:17):
that wants to See illinois looking at them on the
other side of the bracket in round. Two guarantee you
that her name Is shei Is bryant and a very,
big big moment coming up On, Sunday michigan in town
is a senior day for the women's basketball, team and
this group of, seniors they have done things we have
not seen in a generation with The alani women's. Program
we'll talk To jen next on The Sports.

Now back With Larry, Smith Mike cagley And Brad.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
Sturdy welcome back. Here to the Show, Larry mike And
brad on The Sports Spectacular power BY alti guys Dot.
Com we've been talking. Earlier it Is Senior, Day State Farm.
Center be there or be. Square i've got to go
To atlanta unfortunately for an, assignment SO i will actually
(28:36):
not be far away from where our, Friend Genesis bryant
grew up a native of Love, Joy, georgia but she's
been on a LOT i here the past three seasons
and we can't imagine this stretch without. Her, Genesis welcome
to the. Show it's good to see.
Speaker 13 (28:49):
You thank. You thanks for having.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Me Absolutely, Okay so it's first, off it's. Good let's
just talk about the emotions of The Senior. Day what
an amazing run you have had here these pass three,
years and what a great final season you've. HAD i,
mean you've had so many huge moments in second half
and in fourth quarter to put together this season that's
been one of the great runs in the last quarter
(29:12):
century for this. Program talk about what this year is
meant to.
Speaker 14 (29:15):
You, YEAH i mean there's so many emotions that it's
tying with me AND i Think i'm trying to stay
in a moment JUST i don't fill them all just quite.
Yet i'm trying to stay. Present BUT i, mean like you,
said we have had a great run and we're not.
DONE i hope that there's even more to come into
postseason this. Year but, YEAH i just think THAT i
(29:35):
have definitely enjoyed myself.
Speaker 13 (29:37):
HERE i, mean Just i've never been to The.
Speaker 14 (29:40):
MIDWEST i, Mean i've always been The, south and LIKE i,
said From, atlanta went to school originally In, Raleigh North,
carolina and.
Speaker 13 (29:46):
Just comes To midwest was.
Speaker 14 (29:47):
Different it definitely was, deep BUT i didn't know much
about this area at. All but to travel to so
many different STATES i haven't, seen and play different schools
and just the environment of The midwest is now the,
weather that is nothing THAT i will not miss IF
i do return back to The. South BUT i have
definitely enjoyed myself and it is definitely bitter sweet to.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
Leave, yeah for those who don't, know you were at
D Nc state for the first couple of. Years what
why come To? Illinois what was take us through that
decision that you know obviously transferring landing in a Champagne,
yeah coach, me.
Speaker 13 (30:21):
Because LIKE i, SAID i didn't.
Speaker 14 (30:22):
KNOW i mean WHEN i first heard About, ILLINOIS i was,
like what conference is that?
Speaker 13 (30:26):
In, LIKE i was so unaware to The midwest. Period
so WHEN i heard.
Speaker 15 (30:31):
The coache had a new coaching opportunity and she was
coming To, illinois that kind of showed my trust and
coach rand BECAUSE i knew nothing about the, school nothing
about the, place BUT i trusted her AND i knew
where in high.
Speaker 13 (30:42):
School she recruited me out of high school.
Speaker 14 (30:45):
To go To dayton and telling her know then AND
i think just sometimes the second time is the. Term
and WHEN i went to the portal and she reached
out and just the opportunity to play for a great
coach and not even just a great coach as far
as ex, os but great person like she. Can even
in the recruiting, PROCESS i knew it was different between
her and HER stab because they cared about me as
(31:06):
individual and as a, person and it just it was
always about basketball when we get on calls and they'll
come to my, school in my house and things of that.
Nature SO i just knew that she was the one
THAT i wanted to play for and wherever she, went that's.
Speaker 11 (31:18):
WHERE i was gonna.
Speaker 13 (31:19):
Go.
Speaker 2 (31:20):
Yeah, well having been around her so many, times we
can understand why you'd be attracted to. Her she's just
a fantastic. Person and Litt, alone of, course is just
a great coach as. Well you, know you you've got
this group of seniors here that has meant so much
in the big turnaround from a seven win season three
years ago to now to twenty win, season sandwich, around
(31:40):
the first ever w b I t. Championship so many
things to talk about You, Adalia, Kendall brinn, Obviously Makayra
cooking there as, well though she's been injured for a
better part of the. Year talk about just the. Camaraderie
you guys, said there's a, sisterhood there's a there's a,
trust there's a there's a cohesiveness that's missing a lot
of times right now in today's college.
Speaker 14 (32:02):
Basketball, DEFINITELY i think if we don't have that genuine just,
FRIENDSHIP i don't see us all coming back for our
fifth year and then our senior year just because of the,
opportunity because of how the portal is, booming you, know
all these different things that could track someone. Else BUT
i think we knew that we wanted to build a
legacy here and we want to finish our year here
and although you know me and brand and even K,
(32:27):
b we didn't start, Here, makai we didn't start. Here
but for us to have three, years maybe they have
four years under her belt and down just as loyal
as it.
Speaker 13 (32:35):
Gets she she's there all her years.
Speaker 14 (32:37):
Here to just see that and have that, STORYLINE i
think that means more than whatever you might be chasing
trying to go to another.
Speaker 13 (32:44):
School SO i just think that it's.
Speaker 14 (32:46):
Also came that came into play this year and how
we are winning so many close. GAMES i think last
year we lost so many of those close, games especially
early in the season by LIKE i.
Speaker 13 (32:57):
Think it was like five or less.
Speaker 14 (32:59):
Points we're losing those games to come out on the
top this, year and that just shows like, maturesy but
it also shows just how connected we, are how much
we trust one, another how much the coaches staff trust
us as well as.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
Upperclassmen talking About, Genesis Brian tier once Again Senior day On,
sunday THE alni Hosting michigan at twelve thirty At State Farm.
Center you talked about in terms of just those close.
Games what's amazing is that to your, point it shows
where you guys have learned because If I'm i'm watching
your dad on, Halftime i'm not. PANICKING i, mean if
you're you're down in three, Quarters i'm not. Panicking and
(33:34):
you're and you're behind a lot of, that you'll step
up and here the three you'll make a, steal you'll
get an assess to A dalia or to or To.
KINDLE i mean is it's it's remarkable the resilient issues
got you guys have and all the. INJURIES i mean
take us through. That you know where this roster began
in the preseason and where you are now and the
fact that you're twenty one wins and about to get
(33:56):
twenty two and about to get more in The Big
ten tournament and even more the. Ncurnament what has that
been like to go through and see so many teammates
go down and yet you guys find a way to
still get.
Speaker 14 (34:06):
Victoration, YEAH i mean it's not a grace of, guy,
Honestly like because if you would have saw us at
the last, summer we was, like oh my, gosh like
we could anyone could start like we had an AMAZING
i mean we Had Letty crutch AND i mean all
the people that we. Had it was just like will
(34:27):
we could be a top ten? Team and we had
such a high ceiling for ourselves and kind of to
see everyone kind of go down individually one after another
in the summer and then the preseason and the actual
season going Into big ten, play it was, like, okay
like what is? Happening it's always like that what. If
BUT i think we was just like as a senior,
group like no matter, what we're not gonna let anything
(34:48):
on our senior, Year like we're gonna have to face
we're gonna have to, hope we're gonna keep on present,
Board we're gonna have to work.
Speaker 13 (34:53):
HARDER i, mean we're gonna have to know that.
Speaker 14 (34:56):
To expect to play forty minutes a, game if you
get a minute or two break that is a. Blessing
so it's like just having that mentality that no matter,
what we have five, people we don't go out there
and doing play our. Hardest and ULTIMATELY i kind of
like that as, well because like we're the, Underdog like
people see our, bension they see our, depth and they
already have this perceived judgment about, Us AND i.
Speaker 13 (35:18):
Think that's when we get you by.
Speaker 14 (35:19):
Surprise when we go win At, indiana we go win At,
maryland we Beat ayo on our home.
Speaker 13 (35:24):
COURT i, mean those big marquee.
Speaker 14 (35:26):
Wins we wasn't doing that last, year and we have
more strength and more. Numbers SO i think really is
just a belief in one another and also just the,
fights like we want to have the best year possible
for our last.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Year, yeah despite all these, injuries you guys put together
a program record eight Straight Big Ten conference. Wins and
it was and you did it so many different. Ways
you mentioned your free throws at the end of The
maryland game for the first ever win In College park
for this. Program BUT i will tell you THAT i,
thought as as impressive as all the wins have, BEEN
i was equally as impressed with your two games out
In Los, angeles taking on two top five teams at their,
(36:01):
place and you had them on the, ropes on the
run until the very, end even though you were, shorthanded
you were out manned Out woman's and yet still you
guys walked away with your heads up. HIGH i was
so proud of the effort you guys put.
Speaker 14 (36:13):
Forward, yeah, DEFINITELY i MEAN i think it just showed
us ourselves like we could play with the best of
the best in the. COUNTRY i, mean even you, know
With jazz not being out there and that kind of
happened last. Minute just how we still fought and how
we still we put up a good, fight and like you,
said it came out to the.
Speaker 13 (36:30):
Wires a lot of.
Speaker 14 (36:31):
Mental mistakes that we made that we could fix and
we could clean. Up and that's the beautiful thing about
basketball is those things were in our. Control so if
we just do a couple of those more, THINGS i
think we have a different. Outcome but just learning from,
that you, know it would have been nice to have
a winning streak all the way to the end of
DOUBLE a, championship but we recognized that we'd rather have
(36:52):
a loss now than in the postseason where we learned those.
Speaker 13 (36:54):
Lessons SO i think it's all to help us.
Speaker 4 (36:57):
In the long.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
Run, yeah well, said well. Said if you've got tournament
play coming, up last, run we've already talked about Senior.
Day what is this team going to do here in
The Big ten and in THE. Ncaa what are you
looking forward?
Speaker 14 (37:08):
To, yeah, well first, off we got to get this,
win and this win Versus, michigan so we get that
double by.
Speaker 13 (37:16):
And then to play to start playing On.
Speaker 14 (37:19):
Friday we haven't made it to A friday since we've been,
here AND i don't know the program last minu to A.
Friday so to have our first game on A, FRIDAY
i think that's already a testing into what we have
done this. Year BUT i think that's important to get
that double By so really we got really locked in On.
Speaker 13 (37:34):
Michigan BUT i think it's just what we've been.
Speaker 14 (37:37):
Doing like just head, down folksing on, ourselves not worrying
about the external, noise and just going into battle. TOGETHER
i wouldn't want to go into battle with any other
people but the ones that's in the locker, room in
our coaching. Path so just do what we've been doing
all year and just locking into the little.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Things, yeah a thousand points scores so many honors in your.
Career when you is. It have you had a chance
yet to grasp just what you, guys the legacy you
guys are leaving for this program and what you've done
and you're the foundation for what's to.
Speaker 13 (38:09):
Come probably not.
Speaker 14 (38:11):
FULLY i think maybe when it's all over AND i
reflect and analyze on my college, years probably, Yes BUT
i think now it's just Like we've done some really
big things and it's kind of, like oh, wow that
we did, that and it's like the little things that
come up every now and. Then but trying to just
stay focused in lockdown on what's ahead of us and
not get into how and not get into, love but
kind of stand that even tone being in the.
Speaker 13 (38:33):
Present and, yeah.
Speaker 14 (38:35):
Maybe if you asked me a year from, Now i'll
definitely sign of reflect and sit. Back but right Now
i'm just trying to focus on keep winning.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
Games, okay, yeah well we will definitely do. That So
i'd love to know what your answer. Is we certainly
we have seen you at the court in a different
capacity this year as an announcer On big Ten. Network
tell us about your choice of career and what that's
what that like it's like to be on the on
the other side of the. Microphone, YEAH i.
Speaker 13 (39:01):
Mean this wasn't SOMETHING i want to do all my.
Speaker 14 (39:04):
Life, INITIALLY i want to go INTO i want to
be an, agent don't want to be a. Coach then
WHEN i, saw you, know the hours and the time
that college.
Speaker 13 (39:13):
Coaches really put, In i'm, like, oh maybe not a,
Coach AND i was like an.
Speaker 14 (39:16):
ANNOUNCER i feel like that was a perfect way to
still be around the game and still be able to
utilize my. Personality AND i mean having one of the
best seats of the game and some big games and
still just be able to talk about the game and
the flexibility that an announcer has and going to different.
Cities it's almost Like i'm still playing the, game but
it's just Like i'm on a different side of. It
AND i think that's just beautiful to be able to
(39:38):
experience and have those reps as a college.
Speaker 13 (39:41):
STUDENT i, mean.
Speaker 14 (39:42):
To be able to call two men's games and it's
not like Our like our men are.
Speaker 13 (39:46):
Very big deal and it's very big to the.
Speaker 14 (39:48):
Community so for them to be able to give me
that opportunity for my first, game my first, time, like
that's a blessing in, itself and that's just the favor
Of god to be able to do, that And i'm
Just i'm excited to continue you. DOWN i, mean even
WHEN i watched, GAMES i watched it from the perspect
of an analysis and the announcers and what they're saying
and the cadence and so.
Speaker 13 (40:09):
It's like just a whole different side of.
Speaker 14 (40:11):
Basketball but it's Why i've been doing my whole life as,
well so it's like a good balance of something that's
new but also Something i've been doing since a little.
Speaker 2 (40:18):
GIRL i thought you did a great job with. Those
i've done this for more years THAN i care to
admit to to, you BUT i will tell you that
as a as an, analyst never lose, that never lose your.
Experience it's what you bring at. Unique ONCE i was
AT cnn and we had an analyst who would always
want to take our numbers that we had dug out for, like,
no you've been on a Super, bowl you tell us
(40:40):
what that's like because we. Can't SO i think as
long as you do, that you'll have a leg up
on the. Competition thank, You thank, you, well listen good
luck On, sunday where it's bittersweet for all of us
because we've enjoyed getting to know you and watching you
guys Play get That dub over The, wolverines show them who's,
boss and then go deep In. March we look forward
(41:01):
to following you and following your career afterwards as.
Speaker 13 (41:04):
Well thank.
Speaker 14 (41:05):
You thank y'all so much for your support over the,
years and like you, said from that first meeting with.
Speaker 13 (41:10):
A lot N i, Guys so where we are. NOW
i think y'all do a great.
Speaker 14 (41:13):
Job and what you guys do and how y'all support
our team and just our athletics.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
Is so so thank.
Speaker 13 (41:18):
You.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Alis oh you're very welcome you and you have our,

welcome back, Here, Larry mike And brad And Lanning Eye
Sports Spectacular March it is here and time to look
at some of the other races here around the. Country
we're talking More big ten here and a few minutes
at the top of the. Hour but looking around the,
country we just got a good look At, duke and,
look they're for, Real. OKAY i, mean no matter what you,
know how bad, you're the pain, is they're a really
(43:36):
good basketball team and, certainly no, question a national championship. Contender,
boy even in the WEAK acc they cannot Shake louisville And,
clemson each team just right there behind him in the.
Speaker 3 (43:49):
Standings, yeah no Doubt duke is really. Good but at
the same, time that, conference the way it's set, up you,
know again you've got a large, conference and they don't
play a play underbalanced, Schedules so some of those teams
have really great, draws and you, Know clemson And duke
And louisville all right there at the top within a
game and having an opportunity to and and they. Don't
(44:11):
they're not going to play each other like, that home
and home like they used. To so you don't really
get a true conference, CHAMPION i. Guess and so BUT
i do Think duke's the best team in that. LEAGUE
i just don't think it's very good outside of those top,
three you, KNOW i think AND i think the lot
because those teams are so bad at the, bottom you
(44:31):
look really really good because you beat them all by twenty.
Speaker 4 (44:33):
Points and it's a it's a hard league if you're
trying to move up when you have to play a
clown's you, know list of teams that it's such a
strange thing to see THE acc in these. Straits the
once the premier basketball conference in the country is now,
(44:55):
afterthought and to be in fourth place behind THE, Sec
big twelve And big ten just it doesn't seem. Right
but it also doesn't seem like it's going to change anytime.
Speaker 3 (45:09):
Soon, REMEMBER i think of you remember When yukon was
women were in the Like American East, Country American American
conference or whatever they went to for a few, years
they just won like a million games in a. Row
that's What duke reminds me. Of now they're just so
much better than everybody, Else like you might have one,
upset but you're gonna it's like normal, year let's go
seventeen and.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
One, yeah it's. Amazing they really are The East Coast
West Coast. CONFERENCE i, mean, yeah you've got like two
teams and everybody. ELSE i mean it's almost that. Bad
you're exactly, Right big Twelve Houston Cougar's how good are
they right? Now you, know even after, expansion they're still
an outstanding. Conference what a great win of the weekend
we were watching is they took on and knocked off
(45:47):
Of Iowa. State they've come in right now as the
new king of the. Bloc Not, kansas it's The. Cougars
how good is this?
Speaker 3 (45:54):
TEAM i think they're. Good they have good guard, play
which is obviously a big. Part they always Defend Kelvin sampson.
Has those dudes play as hard as. Anybody they're disruptive on,
Defense they're hard to score. AGAINST i really think they're
their season kind of AND i know this sounds crazy
to say, this because you know they're twenty what are?
They you, know they've only lost like one game in
conference heading into you, know this, weekend but the ONE
(46:18):
i think the game Against kansas just totally changed their
season when they had to come back and win and
double overtime And kansas basically had the game won. Twice
Yet houston just found a way to get a win
and they've been cruising and kind of dominant since. Then
i'm outside of one game and it's really impressive what they've.
(46:39):
Done AND i think that they are a team that
you do not want to see In march because they
are so tough and they can they can make shots
and beat, you they can miss shots and beat. You
they can you, know there's just No they can win
in so many different. Ways, NOW i don't think they're
quite at the level Of auburn Or, duke BUT i, think,
boy those if you're one of those three, teams those
(47:00):
are three teams you don't want to. See so if
you're going to see a one, seed let's see the other.
Speaker 4 (47:03):
One But houston will will you, know even playing as good,
teams you know they're going to hold down the shooting
percentage and it's just can you do it back to?
THEM i think the interesting thing is is That houston
victory really kind of top oled or Teetered, kansas And Bill,
(47:24):
self who most people would agree is the probably best
coach in college basketball, today is struggling to get this
team that supposedly has a healthy nil budget to come
together and coalesce with the several players not living up to.
Expectations and it's very interesting to see A Bill self
(47:46):
pressing buttons and they're not the right. Buttons this late
in the season.
Speaker 3 (47:51):
Self Destruct you, mean by the, WAY i will, Say
Danny hurley probably doesn't agree with your assessment As bill
self as the best college basketball.
Speaker 4 (47:58):
Coach, yeah And Danny hurley and, yeah he's got two.
Rings would have a would would have a comment if
we asked him and he cared, Enough, YES.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
I would ask. Him but he's on the floor throwing
a tantra right, Now so.
Speaker 4 (48:15):
In protective time out, Exactly kansas out of the top
twenty five of the first time since twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (48:22):
One seven losses already to unranked. Teams that's a program.
Record it is a season unlike any other In lawrence right.
Now Big. East, Meanwhile Saint john's we've already talked About
Rick patino and our admiration for him what he has.
Done is they about to take on a creton. Again
it's just been it's been outstanding to see him work as.
(48:43):
Magic the guy can coach.
Speaker 3 (48:44):
PERIOD i think we've said this a lot on. Here
we feel like he's probably the you, know if he's
the guy if you want to win a, game he's my, pick,
right you know WHAT i, Mean he's the guy you
want to win a game. With although he's one hundred
and four years. Old he still can get it. Done
and So i'm really really impressive that. Way BUT i
think WHEN i and WHEN i say get it, DONE
(49:05):
i mean coach really, well come, On, Mike so, no,
uh but you know they're playing. Extreme they're playing so
well right, now and h they. Are they do things
differently than everybody else. Too you, know it's like an analytics,
game but they don't shoot that many. Threes they get
to the, rim they guard, you they make it, tough you,
know not. Dissimilar i'm not gonna. Lie they're not dissimilar
(49:27):
to maybe Like houston in the way they just guard
you and find ways to beat you even if they're
not making uh. Shots.
Speaker 4 (49:35):
YEAH i will tell you that the way The patino
plays and coaches as unlike a lot of coaches who
tried to coach the same, way they fell behind the. Times, Somehow,
patino with the athletes that he recruits and with the
attitude that he instills in, them can get by with
just incredible defense long after that's fallen out of vogue
(50:00):
in most levels of. Basketball AND i love the fact
that he doesn't worry about the. Analytics he worries about
what's going on on the court versus trying to, find you,
know the outlier number on a spreadsheet and then deciding
that'll win games for.
Speaker 2 (50:16):
Him, yeah from one go to. Another before we say
goodbye for the, Hour Leanna tarassi making an official this
WEEK wnba the all time legendary. SCORER i don't, know
somebody probably may pass her, record maybe all tim leading,
SCORER nba, champion multiple gold. Medals then she finally calls it.
Quits your thoughts before we go to break On, Tarassi.
Speaker 3 (50:38):
YEAH i think She's if she's not the best women's
basketball player of all, time she's definitely in the conversation
and maybe the best point guard of all. Time so you,
know give. Her she's just, fantastic been a great player
for a long. Time kudos to, her and enjoy retirements
and keep you, know she can keep doing her. Podcast
then have a good, time.
Speaker 4 (50:57):
And, look she came a few years to early to
really really really cash. In that's always a frustrating thing
for any professional in any industry when when you're there
at the, end you know right or you know your
most of your career was before the elevation in funds.
Came but, boy if you talk about domination on the,
(51:18):
court you have to put her name in.
Speaker 2 (51:20):
There, yeah no question about.
Speaker 4 (51:21):
That just just.
Speaker 2 (51:22):
Unbelievable by the, way if you get a, chance really good.
Time article On Diana tarassi and kind of goes through
her decision. Making she, says every year In january she
begins her workouts four months of preseason before the season.
Began this, year she didn't have the the umph to
go do, it and she did then it was it was.
Over but we salute, her give her her. Flowers Diana
(51:43):
tarassi one of the all time. Greats all, right our
number two of.
Speaker 12 (51:51):
Now back to THE Aligni Guys Sports, Spectacular.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
Our number Two Larry, Smith Brad, Sturdy Mike, keckley our,
Producer Tony, cardero our Editor Josh, ewing cast of thousands
bringing a show to you every week from The state
of The arts studio known as The Alani Guys. Studio,
yeah coming. In by the, way we're we're renting out.
Space you know that we've finished off the other part
of the floor over there and we're, OKAY i Know
(52:20):
i'm going too.
Speaker 4 (52:21):
Far.
Speaker 2 (52:21):
Hey by the, way when do you give a shout
out to some of our affiliates all along the. Way
if you are In, quincy, hello w G em one
oh five point. One i'm glad you're with us as,
Well rockford W rka fourteen forty. Am and hello as
well To marion w ggh and ninety eight point, one
ninety eight point, five glad you're with us. Here as
(52:41):
we continue in The sports spectacular're getting Into march and
talking little basketball right. Now we promised earlier talking about
The big ten, standings you, know Because illinois has struggled
here in these past few weeks with all the injuries and.
Illnesses they're out of. It they've been out of the
chase for a top four seed for quite a. While
BUT i think it's still play. Spoilers they've got Again
michigan And, purdue two teams that are trying to finish
(53:04):
that out here coming up here in the in this
final week in the regular, season, fellas want to get your.
Thoughts we saw the other night We mike mentioned, earlier
The Michigan state had the fantastic three pointer at the
buzzer to knock Off. Maryland right The spartan's going to
the weekend now fourteen and three with three games coming
up still three. Tests, sunday they're home Against, wisconsin got
(53:26):
to go To iowa and then the rematch Against michigan
to finish things.
Speaker 3 (53:28):
Off, Yeah Michigan state's obviously in a really good spot
here with two home games remaining in the game of
The iowa team that you know probably won't guard them at.
All so this is a team that has a good
chance of getting to maybe you, know sixteen, seventeen sixteen
or seventeen, wins AND i think if you get sixteen,
wins probably they're in a good spot to at least
get a share of the. Title they, are and you,
(53:52):
know they're not a team that wows you about. Anything
they don't have like one. Star they just really they
played ten or. Guys they they're going to be, physical
they guard you. Well they don't play the analytics game
in the, sense they don't shoot many threes unless they're
from half, court and then they just kind, of you,
know just find a way to win. THOUGH i, mean
(54:14):
they're just a team. There izzo has found a team
that really fits his persona and they're just, tough they're,
physical and they get the job.
Speaker 4 (54:22):
Done, yeah it's kind of crazy how. Accurate The Big
ten schedule makers were to Have michigan Visiting Michigan state
On march. Ninth there could be an awful lot at
stake that. Day AND i, think AS i look at this,
SEASON i know this is going to sound a bit,
crazy but are we seeing the end of the usage
(54:43):
of the? Franometer BECAUSE i don't know If fran's going
to be coming back At iowa next, year and he's
been an institution at that, school and it seems like
The fran train is kind of run out of a
little bit of steam here as the season closes.
Speaker 3 (54:59):
Down somebody needs to Hire fran as an offensive. Coordinator,
YEAH i Mean fran.
Speaker 4 (55:06):
Is an offensive coordinator And Bruce weber as a defensive,
coordinator and then you just be head coach and just
watch the wins. Come. YEAH i do. THAT i.
Speaker 3 (55:12):
WOULD i would do that for a million dollars a,
year AND i would just like do press conferences and
do radio. SHOWS i wouldn't have to coach. Anything let
those dudes do. It they know what they're doing on
that side of the. Floor they just can't do the
other side of the. Floor that's where they run out of,
trouble right, Right, yeah it's it's just. Crazy fran's been In.
IOWA i, mean he's been In iowa since you, know twenty.
Eleven that's a long tenure in college. Basketball twenty, TEN i,
(55:36):
guess you, know tw ten to eleven. Season but that's
a long tenure today in college.
Speaker 4 (55:41):
Basketball that's a generation when you look at think about
what the game looked like when he took over and
what it is.
Speaker 2 (55:48):
Now, yeah and he always finds a way to get
his teams competitive and ready and but, yeah but defense is.
OPTIONAL i, mean you know we talked About illinois with
the only only five, turnovers well because there was no.
PRESSURE i mean even it was funny too to. WATCH
i would try to do a full court press And
illinois had no. Issues i'm not Sure illinois ever practiced
(56:09):
against the. Press it was, like you're gonna start, here.
Speaker 3 (56:12):
Okay across the time they had to call the one
time out BECAUSE i think it Was Trey white. Forgot
they were press. Forgot oh, YEAH i should go down,
there call timeout and then just get, in bounce and
get it at the other. End it's like no big.
Deal it's like it's just no sense of urgency really
on offense and because you didn't need it.
Speaker 4 (56:33):
Well AND i love that their press had no sense
of urgency. Either it was the most relaxed Press i've ever.
SEEN i don't know what you call, that, like you
know a lot of, them you, know like you call
your press heat or. Fire and then there's his uh cold, shower.
Speaker 3 (56:47):
Lukewarm full court.
Speaker 2 (56:49):
Escort, here let me help you get down the court,
here you can go this.
Speaker 4 (56:53):
Way, yeah but when you named, THAT i was wondering
where you were, Going, Larry, oh.
Speaker 2 (56:58):
YEAH i knew that's where you're. Is, hey, Listen. Michigan Dusty,
may first year up In Anton. Arbor is he a
coach of the year this year in The Big? Ten you,
KNOW i think he probably should.
Speaker 3 (57:11):
Be but there's gonna be a lot of sentimental for
uh ol uh Tom, izzo if you, know if they
can hang, on because it's, like, well you, know Tom
izzo's you, know you know, old and he's you, know
he's the he's the he went Broke Bob knight's record this.
Year all those. THINGS i think there's gonna be a
lot of centiment. There But i'd vote For Dusty may
(57:31):
just Because iso has already been.
Speaker 4 (57:33):
There, YEAH i as much as it pains, ME i
would vote For izzoh. Uh this team was did not
have high expectations at the start of the, year did
not have the type of team that would be the
quintessential modern basketball. Team and you know they're they're playing excellent,
ball AND i JUST i gotta give a tip of the.
Cap you, know for all all the times we've seen
(57:55):
A lionei fans try to throw dirt On Tom izzo's,
call often it just doesn't. Happen he just keeps getting
back up and going. Strong he is the.
Speaker 3 (58:05):
Undertaker, yeah he.
Speaker 2 (58:07):
Ans there's no question that he's had a fantastic. Year
my vote had to either go To Dusty may or
To Greg guard In wisconsin because WHEN i saw This
badger team back in Early december and only beat, THEM
i did not see what they're doing right now in
the future going Into.
Speaker 3 (58:20):
MARCH i think that's fair. Too guard deserves some props,
TOO i. DON'T i think those are the three guys
that probably should be at the top for.
Speaker 4 (58:30):
Sure, yeah it's certainly Not Mick.
Speaker 3 (58:33):
Cronin he's too busy whining about something to win in
a bad, suit you, Know Kevin willard's done a good
job At maryland this. Year BUT i don't know if
it's that you can say that he's like coach year
because it's more because they underachieved last year that you
(58:55):
look at them and say that you didn't think they
were gonna be as good this. Year but there's a
ton of talent on that team.
Speaker 4 (58:59):
Too that's old strategy bred suyuppressive.
Speaker 2 (59:03):
Stuff So Michigan state doing their, thing they're the team
to beat right now Now, Michigan, Maryland, Wisconsin, purdue U
c L a still in the. Mix right. Now we're gonna,
see you, Know PURDUE. Ucla of, course it's The friday night,
game it's On. Fox who's the of those? Teams which
ones that if we headed to the, Tournament Michigan, state
if they're the one, seed who's the other team you
(59:25):
fear the most out of?
Speaker 4 (59:27):
That out of that?
Speaker 3 (59:27):
Mix, well If I'm, ILLINOIS i Fear maryland because they
do not match up well With maryland at. All, NOW
i will say that it obviously helped That ivasicho did
not you, know was not, available and that really hurts
and they couldn't play two big. Guys so but against you,
know queen and uh you know and uh. Reeese, so
(59:47):
BUT i do think that they're the toughest matchup For.
Illinois illinois has already Beaten, wisconsin and we'll see In Michigan.
State you, know when they played At Michigan state when
they were, healthy that was a game that came down
to the. Wire So illinois matching. Up they've already BEAT.
Ucla SO i Think maryland's the team that's not a
good matchup for, them so you try and avoid.
Speaker 4 (01:00:08):
Them i'm not Certain michigan is a good matchup, either
although they do have a tendency to give the ball
away quite a, bit and so they don't have that
they don't have that same peer power That maryland. Does
but either two of those teams are just not good.
Matchups and you Need mores And thomas slav both healthy
(01:00:29):
and not fouling. People. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
True so we get to The Big Ten tournament In,
indianapolis and, again in case you have forgotten you're not
familiar with the expanded format this, year with the eighteen
teams expanded, league only fifteen teams get, invited so three
of the teams will. Not we're looking at still the
top four seeds get the buy all the way to the,
(01:00:53):
quarterfinals that double bye or triple by if you, Will
michigan state number, one but take the. Spark who's the
other team that would be your pick to win it
all That sunday In indianapolis and going to the tournaments
As Big Ten tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:01:09):
CHAMPIONS i think there's a lot of teams that that
could fit that. BILL i, MEAN i think it's pretty wide.
OPEN i MEAN i even say, that you, Know illinois
would be a team that has a chance to make a.
Run But i'm gonna PICK i think that for, Me
wisconsin is a team that could really be impressive in
the tournament. SETTING i just think tanjay is is that
(01:01:32):
might be the most difficult get to. GUARD i think
they could be impressive. There and AND i think they're
pretty they can match, up they can play, small liquably.
Big it's not like them maybe making a run to
The big ten tournament outside of you know that that top.
Speaker 4 (01:01:45):
Pair, YEAH i would agree With. Wisconsin and then as
much as as people you know don't want to think
it's gonna, happen BUT i THINK i think you could
have a team win a couple of. Games i'm not
certain that they're gonna they're and then you, know break the.
Bank but a team Like Ohio, state when they get it,
together they're very, good and when they don't have it,
(01:02:06):
together they're very. Bad and so it's really interesting to,
see like those those ticket, holders when you show up
to the, game you really don't know what's gonna. Happen
is that not.
Speaker 3 (01:02:16):
True of The Big ten this?
Speaker 8 (01:02:17):
Year?
Speaker 4 (01:02:17):
Though?
Speaker 3 (01:02:18):
Overall you Mentioned Ohio. State throw In nebraska who sometimes
looks like they're really good and sometimes looks. Terrible oregon
has looked as good and bad as you can possibly.
Look illinois has looked AS i, Mean illinois went from
Beating oregon by a thousand of losing The duke by two,
thousands SO i, mean it's really. Amazing indiana same, way
some good wins and just then theen days they went
(01:02:39):
looked like they shouldn't be. There SO i don't, know
it's just a pretty wide open.
Speaker 4 (01:02:43):
Event, yeah totally. Agree is this this is gonna be
great drama for the folks broadcasting it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:50):
Well even a team Like minnesota that that knocked Off michigan,
early everyone thought it was a fluke that they go
out west and beat BOTH la teams in the same Weekend,
minnesota and they're fighting just to get in the. Tournaments
like there's all guarantee that they're gonna get an. Invitation
it could be one of the three that's left. Out
that's to your. Point that's how deep this league is right.
Now and, yeah you could have a twelve seed advance
(01:03:13):
to the. Quarterfinals that's very.
Speaker 3 (01:03:14):
Possible, yeah that's crazy when you think about, it that you,
know three teams don't even get in the, tournament And
i'm not sure which one they. Are i'm not sure
which ones they're gonna. Be but, man that is a
that's a tough pill to. Swallow but you look at
that middle, ground all those teams from you, know from you,
know like you, know what would you say nine through.
(01:03:35):
FIFTEEN i, mean any of those teams could win two,
GAMES i mean or lose the first game by Twenty so.
Speaker 4 (01:03:41):
Yeah, yeah this is this is a very uh it
doesn't have a high end at the, top but it's
got a lot of good teams and especially you, know
if you come in and take a game, off you're
gonna get. Walloped it's just the way it's gonna.
Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
Be, yeah no question about. That SO i fight here
at the. Top still another week to, go and again
looking forward To illinois At michigan On, Sunday purdue coming
Into State Farm center for. On we have, Seniors, yes
we have. SENIORS i guess we Have Rick, house, yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:04:14):
Ye who still could come back another year even though
he's a. Senior that's the story of college basketball. Today
you're a senior four or five times before you, graduate
before you.
Speaker 2 (01:04:24):
Leave you could call it something. ELSE i don't. Know
it's it's the goodbye for now. Day he's got to be.
Speaker 4 (01:04:30):
A record for a guy who's attended the most senior
nights and just as at one university and then at multiple, universities.
Speaker 2 (01:04:39):
Probably Jalen coleman, lands, RIGHT i mean.
Speaker 4 (01:04:41):
He said he did seven, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:04:44):
Four years at six different, schools Doctor Coleman, LANCE i, apologize,
so but, yeah he's almost.
Speaker 3 (01:04:50):
Got as many credits as.
Speaker 4 (01:04:51):
Me we didn't think that was humanly. POSSIBLE i, know.
Speaker 3 (01:04:55):
You had to go to school like ten. Years.
Speaker 2 (01:04:58):
Yeah so they call Him Van.
Speaker 4 (01:05:00):
Wilder he's the first college person ever to have a
lettered nine different. Years.
Speaker 2 (01:05:05):
Right Producer tony says THAT i call it get Out.
DAY i like that. Too one thought when we get
to before we take a quick, break we get to
THE ncaa, tournament looking at crystal, ball looking, ahead which
team makes it the farthest in THIS ncaa tournament out
of the big.
Speaker 3 (01:05:23):
TEN, Whoa it's so hard to predict this because of
you got to see the, draw, RIGHT i, mean the matchups,
matter so that's. Stuff But i'll go with is. Though
just Be i'll go With Michigan, state even THOUGH i
don't know that that's the. ANSWER i just feel like
that if they're at they're gonna be a two, seed
and that gives them a great opportunity to, get you,
know maybe to An elite.
Speaker 4 (01:05:44):
Eight, yeah AND i Think wisconsin's had some tough times
in the, tournament AND i think this is maybe the,
year especially the Way tanji's, playing that this might be
the year That guard gets that monkey off of his. Back.
Speaker 2 (01:05:59):
YEAH i like him.
Speaker 4 (01:06:00):
Too.
Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
BOY i want to Pick, illinois BUT i need to
see them in this next. WEEK i need to see
how they play Against michigan and against Against. Purdue i'm
gonna go with The. WOLVERINES i Think Dusty may is
a really good coach and what he's done, there done
the final four. Run he's done. It he's got one
of the guys he did it with on his. Team
so the cultures there in the locker room to make it.
Happen hard matchup with two seven footers in those first two,
(01:06:23):
rounds so we'll see what happened. Again this is all
just fun because it's so far. Away Like brad, said
we don't know the. Matchups we have no idea how
to figure that. Out all, Right we've got a quick,
take a quick time. Out it's a sportspoctech and where
the allowing guts slow.
Speaker 11 (01:06:39):

Speaker 17 (01:08:38):
Podcasts we're back on The Alana Guy Sports.
Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
Spectacular Tony cardero in the, Booth Brad, Sturdy Mike, Kagley
Larry smith coming at you here and we're gonna talk a.
Little let's talk a little spring. Football but we can
we really talk spring football anymore because it sounds like
nobody's playing spring.
Speaker 2 (01:09:08):
Football.
Speaker 4 (01:09:09):
Yeah that the the transfer, portal, players, agents back, channels
it just has made it too, dangerous As Matt ruhle,
talked to show off your talent that's sitting on your
bench when somebody else can, go, hey do you know
somebody who knows his, coach his high school coach that
(01:09:31):
we can talk to and do that little ring around
the rosie. Thing SO i think it's going to be
like a spring football festival and they're going to bring
in maybe you know something where you can do skills
stuff and fans can, participate and the players get a
(01:09:52):
chance to meet the, fans which gives you nil opportunities
to fork over to the players for doing. That and
you never know when a player might meet a business
owner that goes, up this guy would be good to
be the front man for my.
Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
Business you, know the spring football practices are important for those.
Coaches the spring football game is. Not the spring football
game is all for the. Fans so you need to
find a, way just like you, said to find a
way to engage the, fans get them to be excited
about your, program your, players et, cetera without having your
players get injured running. Around you, know even if they've
(01:10:27):
got the red jersey, on it's still you, know those
linemen are still hitting each. Other so, yeah there's definitely
a way TO i think do kind of make that
transition to make it a little bit. BETTER i think
it's a good idea because these guys now you've, got
you don't see guys in THE nfl having a spring, game,
RIGHT i, mean you with and risk having your franchise
(01:10:48):
quarterback get hurt in a spring game or your running
back get hurt and tear AN acl or something at spring.
Game so this is now a this is now a
business more than it is a college, sport and so
this is this is the way of the.
Speaker 4 (01:11:00):
Future, YEAH i gotta be honest with. You if IF
i was a pro football, player which we were in
absolutely no danger of having, HAPPENED i would have every
YEAR i would pay a doctor to give me an
injury IF i was good enough to make it to
The Pro, bowl Because i'm not Gonna i'm not going
to risk a career any injury on a game that
(01:11:21):
means nothing to. Anyone BUT i do Think illinois had years.
AGO i remember taking my kids over to you, know
over there in the spring and they Met John butcher
that era of A lini and had a great old,
time you, know catching passes and throwing passes and meeting
(01:11:42):
the team and doing sprints and. Stuff and the kids
thought that was. FANTASTIC i think that would be, great
and it would also help let kids grow up across the,
state you, know who come down to that to kind
of enjoy a linin. Football maybe started start the fandom
a little.
Speaker 3 (01:11:58):
Earlier, YEAH i totally. AGREE i think that's a good.
Thing so what do you think let's go switch THE.
NFL a couple of things about THE, nfl AND i
don't think we even talked about this, before but you,
know we got a couple of, guys possibly Maybe Aaron,
rodgers a couple of veteran veteran quarterback grizzled, Veterans Aaron
rodgers maybe going to The, rams that's the rumor with
(01:12:19):
maybe Taking Devonte adams with, him and Then Matthew stafford
going from The rams to The, raiders WHICH i would
love BECAUSE i actually Like Matthew. STAFFORD i think he's really,
talented really good. Dude so, Yeah i'm this would be. Interesting,
YEAH i do.
Speaker 4 (01:12:34):
THINK i think The raiders would be an enticing spot to.
Go of, Course Las vegas incredible. PLACE i love that.
Town Pete carroll is a coach who is seventy three
going on, forty and he's always captured the imagination of his.
(01:12:54):
Teams AND i don't care whether It's seattle OR usc
they talk about him and. Perlatives if you could Get
Matthew stafford, There he's proven that he can take a
quarterback and and, run And Russell wilson certainly doesn't have
the talent that an Old Matt stafford.
Speaker 3 (01:13:12):
Has, yeah SO i think that that's. TRUE i think
those are really interesting things that could. HAPPEN i Think
Aaron rodgers might be rejuvenated With sean McVay on the,
sideline And Matthew stafford could really help that The raiders
actually not suck for, once so that which would be
a good thing for. Them but so let's talk the
other side of THE, nfl and we didn't talk about
(01:13:33):
this part was and this Is Major League baseball going
to the automated strike, zone, right we're talking about, that
but also THE nfl going to the automated first, down
the virtual first, down getting away from the chain gang
and going to the technology tracking system for first. Downs
what do you think of?
Speaker 4 (01:13:49):
THAT i love that until you, Know russian hackers get
into it and.
Speaker 3 (01:13:58):
Not a first.
Speaker 4 (01:13:58):
Down, sorry maybe they'll Be boy. Fans The cowboys will
be in their typical third and, eleven pick up two
yards and get a first. Down but, NO i THINK
i actually like this because these guys who are, referees
they've got it impossible task trying to referee this game
of these superhuman. Athletes and if we can get like
(01:14:20):
like ball, spotting you know it was the ball out of?
Bounds where did it go out of? Bounds things like,
That LIKE i feel sorry for a referee when they've
got it from twenty yards. Away they have to figure
out where a punt goes out of? Bounds how do
you do? That and so why not use it to
help these. Guys it is in a situation where they
(01:14:40):
can succeed.
Speaker 3 (01:14:41):
Better we have the technologies do. It why not use.
It i'm not saying you don't need, officials but you,
know use the technology to make things. Better LIKE i
really like the the auto strike, Zone LIKE i like
this idea where you can challenge a strike. Call there's guy,
there there's a guy the other, day says the umpire
because there's got a. Challenge, uh surprisingly or, shockingly the
(01:15:04):
call stands or call is. Confirmed it's, like you, know
it's almost like they expect to miss, it, Right but you,
KNOW i think it is, good AND i don't know
that they're going to MAKE i don't think you will see.
Challenges if you get, challenges like in the major, leagues
where you're going to see a challenge where it's going
to be on a close pitch that's like really, close
unless it's a key, spot you. Know but you're going
(01:15:26):
to see some of these calls that we've, seen you,
know guys missing the, strikes some by six inches and you,
know four to six. Inches those are the ones that guys, like,
hey we're going to challenge this one and get this.
Changed and SO i think that would be it makes
the game, better right, Especially, yeah it, Is and it.
Speaker 4 (01:15:41):
Doesn't take a lot of. Time when you talk to
YOUR ai, system it doesn't take a lot of time
for it to tell you yes or. No you're asking
you're not asking a subjective. Question you, know how far
did the football point? Go, well went to this part
and the first down is at that. Part therefore it's
not a first. Down so to, me it actually may
speed the game. Up it puts the referees into a
(01:16:03):
position where they can. Succeed and, again like the six
million dollar, man if you can build, it then let's
go ahead and build it and we'll watch it run
around and we'll enjoy.
Speaker 3 (01:16:13):
It when do we put a chip in the football
so we always have the spot and we can tell
when the guy and then then we just always have
the spot right. There we know if it crossed the
line or. Not we know across the goal, line we
know across the Perfect let's do. It let's do it all,
Right we got our picks coming up. Later find out
who's gonna find out who gets? Last, WELL i, mean Besides,
(01:16:34):
Mike mike's always lasts whether or not we tied with.
Him so and uh so we'll see what happens.
Speaker 4 (01:16:40):
Here but we'll be back home for this, Consistency.
Speaker 5 (01:16:42):
Brad this is the when our, flourishes everyone flourishes. Commitment
this is the let's revitalize our neighborhood's. Commitment this is
the roll up our sleeves and pitch in. Commitment this
is beauty where our commitment to strengthen our communities is
a top priority through, entergy engaged, volunteers through monetary, support
(01:17:03):
community leadership and. Advocacy Because Bucy bank is more than
a bank that does well or a bank that does.
Good Bucy bank building, business growing wealth since eighteen sixty,
Eight proud to be the official bank of The Fighting.
Speaker 18 (01:17:16):
Alna everything is expensive right, now, gas, food you name.
It you're spending, more you are making the same or less.
Money so what do you? Do you rack up credit card?
Debt that's what you. Do it's not your, fault it's the.
Economy and guess What if you rack up too much
credit card, debt like some of, us you can't pay your.
(01:17:38):
Bills then the credit card, companies as nice as they,
are start hounding you for. Money then you start your downward.
SPIRAL a smart thing for you to do is to
call The Zero. Debt they can help you consolidate all
your credit card builds into one affordable. Payment millions of
people have done. It it works to make you debt.
(01:17:59):
Free make this free call right. Now it costs you
nothing to learn.
Speaker 10 (01:18:04):
More eight hundred five oh seven seven two nine, three
eight hundred five oh seven seven two nine three eight
hundred five oh seven seven to two nine. Three that's
eight hundred five oh seven seventy two ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:18:17):
Three now back to The Alani Guys Sports.
Speaker 2 (01:18:23):
Spectacular welcome back here to The Sports spectacular powered By
Atlanta guys Dot. Com He's Brad, Sturdy He's mike Keg.
Lee I'm Larry. SMITH i want to take a moment
to just mark the passing Of Gene. Hackman danville native
Attended illinois briefly as a young man before going on
(01:18:46):
to pursue his acting. Career found dead earlier this week
with his wife and his dog and their home In New.
Mexico he was ninety five big fan Of Jean's Man.
Superman he was Lex. LUTHOR i thought he just changed
the role, obviously the crooked lawyer in the, firm the
curmudgeonly know discruttle government employee in enemy of the, state
(01:19:08):
so many different. Roles he was fantastic and certainly again
sorry to hear that he has passed on rest In.
Pece illinois Playing michigan both in men's and women's. Basketball
the women will be at, home of, course For Senior
day On, sunday the men in an. Arbor one stat
big About sunday nights are about Last tuesday night for
the game Against. Iowa tenth win of the season in
(01:19:31):
The Big. Ten that marks the sixth year in a
row That illinois has been at five hundred or better
in The Big, ten the Only Big ten team to
do that during that span in those six. Years so
hats off To Brett, underwood all the coaches that he's
had during that, span all the. Players it's a testament
just to where this program is right. Now mark eighty
points has something to watch for in these games this.
(01:19:54):
Season illinois seventeen and one when they score eighty points
ten and zero in The Big ten to do. That
so let's see if they can get that done in Ann.
Arbor so that's the. Game you. Know one of the
players That Coach underwood pointed out singled out after The
iowa game Was Kylon, bonswell the junior who's A champagne
native coming back home after playing two years At, arizona
(01:20:14):
really has been a stabilizing. Force one thing that people
missed we discussed earlier briefly was his defense Against Cooper,
flag which was really outstanding last week In New. York
did a great job as well of locking Down Peyton
stanford to just one of six and three point range
two of ten shooting, overall made life hard for. Him
coach talked about him and some other topics as we
listened back into his postgame press Run.
Speaker 7 (01:20:35):
Tuesday two great, practices.
Speaker 6 (01:20:39):
Extreme amount of, talk both holding guys accountable and pushing,
them but also coaching and.
Speaker 7 (01:20:50):
Teaching. Them he's he's a wealth of.
Speaker 6 (01:20:53):
Experience kylon's really intelligent as a player and you know
his his you, know give me a little help coming
off this screen by jump into the, ball do you, know,
uh you, know talk a little sooner coming off, that you,
know those little things that that that he knows common are.
Happening he's he's he's dialed into and so he becomes
(01:21:15):
a coach on the, floor and you, know then tonight
he was he was really, good just getting downhill on
the offensive.
Speaker 7 (01:21:21):
Side SO i believe on him a.
Speaker 6 (01:21:24):
Lot he's had two unbelievable, practices so it's no surprise
that he played. Well he, said you were up basically
all night coming back from.
Speaker 7 (01:21:34):
Do can you take us inside a little bit that
both feed.
Speaker 13 (01:21:36):
In on the.
Speaker 7 (01:21:36):
Changes now this is pulling off a little bit that.
Speaker 6 (01:21:39):
MOMENT i, mean there's there's Like i'm a bad sleeper,
anyway and especially after a. Loss so you you watch
the film and you play things back and now it's
you know a lot of conversations about how much can
we grind as what can we? Do and we do
(01:22:02):
and we do have guys back in, practice and we
do have a positive energy from the from the standpoint
that they're not, sick feeling like, crap just trying to
get through. Practice so IT'S i just felt and had
to happen after after you, know not playing very well
and we we actually played better than the score.
Speaker 7 (01:22:24):
Show we should make.
Speaker 6 (01:22:25):
Shots and you know It's france great the best because
Frandin county, goes, yeah we've all been, there you, know
and and it's the, truth but it's it's it just felt, like,
okay let's let's give them some, uh let's.
Speaker 7 (01:22:38):
See what we can what we can handle with a.
Speaker 6 (01:22:40):
Change and we needed a you, KNOW i don't want
to say a restart, button but we needed. That we
needed to see what change to get them thinking about
other things other than just that.
Speaker 19 (01:22:51):
Moment Coach, underwood very wrong, question but a question THAT
i feel like is an ax often enough at this
point in the, Season how are you.
Speaker 7 (01:23:02):
Doing spectacular right? Now we're just. Fine thank you for.
Asking you know you, SO.
Speaker 6 (01:23:16):
I live in a, bubble, okay and it's THE i
don't read one thing you guys. Say that's WHY i
like all of. YOU i don't care what you. SAY
i really. DON'T i don't do anything on social AND
i am very very focused on helping fifteen young guys
be the.
Speaker 7 (01:23:36):
Best they can.
Speaker 8 (01:23:37):
Be and.
Speaker 7 (01:23:40):
So that causes. Me i'm a very bad.
Speaker 6 (01:23:44):
Sleeper and it's it's the worst thing that's happened IS
i probably tracked my sleep.
Speaker 7 (01:23:50):
Score SO i get impressed WHEN i see those. Things but.
Speaker 6 (01:23:55):
It's just part of. It it's part Of. February it's to.
Be it gets to be a challenge every. Day today
the sun was out of sixty degrees AND i walked eleven,
thousand eight hundred steps.
Speaker 7 (01:24:11):
And that was not just literally a breath of fresh.
Air it felt so good because he get. Tied the
trunk will. Too But i'm doing.
Speaker 2 (01:24:18):
Great thank you for Ask thatt's goch T underwood once,
again two forty Five central time tip off ON cbs On,
Sunday illinois At. Michigan you, know our Man mike likes
to talk, boxing and recently he caught up with someone
who shares his.
Speaker 4 (01:24:31):
Passion despite having titles stripped away from, Him yusick is
the unified. Champion he owned all the belts and no
one has been able to take them from. Him until
someone does that to, Me yusick is the. Man, Now
i'd like to discuss this with someone who actually really
knows about boxing and writes about, it and we Have Matthew,
(01:24:54):
aguilar who is a writer FOR Ap, SPORTS Usa Today
sports And Ringside seat, magazine along with fights atw dot,
com and he runs a podcast Called Old scribes With
George willis Of The New York. Times, matthew thanks for
coming on the, Show.
Speaker 20 (01:25:15):
Mike thanks for having. Me good stuff. THERE i agree
with almost everything you.
Speaker 4 (01:25:19):
Said so how do you put him in perspective when
you're trying to analyze the great heavyweights of all? Time
what process do you go? Through and then how does
that make you? Sick? Look, uh you, KNOW.
Speaker 20 (01:25:35):
I mean you kind of have to look at you,
KNOW i wrote a column today and over this week
AND i kind of just kind of picked up WHERE
i left off last, time AND i kind of you,
know and ranking all time. Greats it doesn't just have
to do With hoopy toom, right it's also you, know
how they did in their own, era the impact they
(01:25:56):
had in their own, era the fighters that were available in.
Speaker 21 (01:25:59):
That so it's more than just a one on one you.
Speaker 20 (01:26:02):
Know would In usik beat, a you, Know Joe, frasier
or would In musik beat, a you, Know George. Foreman
it's it's a little more complicated than. That BUT i
think it just based on you, know his record he's
he's twenty three and. Zero you, know even though cruiserweight
(01:26:23):
shouldn't count into the heavyweight. Picture, here just the kind
of momentum and continuity he's had during his career that's
kind of just continued on into the heavyweight. Division is
this really something to something to? Behold AND, i like you,
said we haven't seen anything like that in a long.
Speaker 21 (01:26:41):
Time and for.
Speaker 20 (01:26:42):
Him to beat probably the two most dominant heavyweights of his,
Era Anthony joshua And Tyson fury in back to back,
series you, know and then sandwiching in with the guy
who it currently holds THE ibf title And Daniel.
Speaker 21 (01:26:57):
Dubois you, know.
Speaker 20 (01:26:59):
That's a heck of a. Run that's that's that's an
all time. Run and you really do have to you,
know you can't help but, wonder you, know how how
Would George foreman do with someone who moved like? This
how would A Lennox lewis do with somebody who presented
this kind of angle and his kind Of so with all,
(01:27:20):
that at the end of the, DAY i kind, of you,
KNOW i flirted with Putting uza cup a little, higher you,
know because recency is a is a real, thing you,
know you come up two days away from watching a
great performance and a great, fight it makes you want
to put him.
Speaker 21 (01:27:37):
Higher AND i think that's probably true for.
Speaker 20 (01:27:39):
Everybody BUT i put him in at number, ten and
the guy he replaced on my list would Be Mike.
Speaker 21 (01:27:45):
Tyson AND i just feel like.
Speaker 20 (01:27:49):
Because of, consistency even Though tyson was very consistent over four,
years and just the quality of his wins and kind
of the, meaning the amount of meaning that these fights carried.
Worldwide you, Know i'd Give usik a slide edge Over,
tyson THOUGH i. WOULDN'T i wouldn't argue with anybody who
(01:28:11):
Said tyson belongs there, Instead but that.
Speaker 21 (01:28:14):
Was kind of the thought. Process does recency have something
to do with?
Speaker 20 (01:28:18):
It probably, So but you, KNOW i think at the
end of the, day it's you, know it's probably a
list that a lot of people could probably agree.
Speaker 4 (01:28:25):
With, Yeah and just to give fans an, idea you
can go to old scribes DOT, B, E E, H
I I v dot com and there you can see
what he has to. Say BUT i Saw Alexander musick
was number, ten Holy field was number, Nine Jack johnson was,
(01:28:47):
Eight dempsey was, Seven marciano, Six foreman, Five Lennox, lewis
WHO i think is frightfully underrated number four by a
lot of. People Larry holmes another guy who just doesn't
get the respect at number, Three Joe lewis at number,
two And Muhammad ali at number. One Now i'm going
(01:29:10):
to ask you a, question going to get off THE
usa subject for a, second just Because i'm. Me my
number two Is Sonny? Listing, OKAY i thought that he
cleared out. Everything he literally beat the whole top ten,
contenders had a hard time getting a title. Fight we
don't really know how old he really was when he
(01:29:32):
lost to a Young Cassius. Clay where do you Put
Sonny liston in this? Mix because WHEN i hear the
quotes of the old timers, too like when you Hear
George foreman talk About Sonny, listing it makes me think
that this guy was really somebody who was. Special where
do you Have sonny?
Speaker 20 (01:29:52):
AT i THINK i Think sunny is probably twelve, thirteen
THAT'S i mean he's and again he's one of those
fighters THAT i think you could easily make the case
for and putting him. Higher he he, he along With Laurie,
holmes probably had the greatest jab of all. Time you,
know they say That liston's jab was a power, punch you, know,
yeah he. Was he was, fearsome he was a heavy.
(01:30:14):
Puncher he knew his way around the. RAIN i think
WHEN i think About Sonny, liston, THOUGH i think about
his heavyweight rain was. Short uh he uh you, know
he Demolished Floyd patterson, twice who was, undersized and then
he ended up losing to a what seven to one
(01:30:35):
underdog In Cassius clay in a fight that he basically
quit right in the.
Speaker 21 (01:30:41):
Rematch it was. TERRIBLE i think he probably threw the.
Speaker 20 (01:30:43):
Fight AND i think when you combine all, THAT i
think leading up to probably his heavyweight, rain he was more,
fearsome uh you, know and like you, said no one
knows how, young how how old he was.
Speaker 21 (01:30:57):
At that time for. Real, yeah but, UH.
Speaker 20 (01:31:02):
I think, OVERALL i don't think he has quite, enough
despite his physical attributes and despite his his reputation to
inch him any higher than say number.
Speaker 4 (01:31:14):
Twelve, okay now with you, sick what does what do
you think he has left to? Do? NOW i know
he's he hasn't been a heavyweight champion that. Long at
the same, time there's really not a next man up
coming up for? Him where do you see him going from?
Speaker 21 (01:31:38):
Here he needs to, retire.
Speaker 20 (01:31:42):
He, WOULD i, mean he's got nothing else to. Prove
the only fight on the horizon that makes any sense Is.
Wall you, know there was a little bit of controversy
in their fight when they you, know he got he
got hit with a with a shot that a lot
of people thought was.
Speaker 4 (01:31:57):
LOW i.
Speaker 20 (01:32:00):
Did think it was. Lower the referee called at. LOW
a lot of people thought it was. LEGAL i thought it,
was you, know a low, shot you. Know and but
you take away that moment and he dominated the. Fight
so it's kind of like The Roy jones effect after
he Beat John ruis in two thousand and. Three, right
(01:32:21):
if you would have retired after that, fight he'd be looked,
upon probably along with Like Sugar Ray robinson's maybe one
of the top two greatest fighters that ever.
Speaker 21 (01:32:31):
Lived, Right but he went, on he got knocked.
Speaker 20 (01:32:36):
Out two or three, times and as unfair as it,
is it kind of put a damper on the entirety
of his. CAREER i think the same thing could happen
To ustik if he carries.
Speaker 21 (01:32:50):
On he's thirty eight years.
Speaker 20 (01:32:52):
Old his style is one that if he loses a
little bit of, speed loses a little bit of, reflexes
then he stands the, chance especially fighting guys that are
much bigger than he, is he.
Speaker 21 (01:33:06):
Stands the chance of getting knocked, out just As jones.
Did SO i.
Speaker 20 (01:33:10):
AGREE i, MEAN i think you're, Right. MIKE i think
he doesn't have anything left to. Prove obviously he's got
a lot of money to make, still and he as you,
know as much money as he's probably been, making it's
probably not as much as he deserves given his. Quality but,
(01:33:31):
YEAH i would like to see who as a g.
RETIRE i really. Would he's three years. Old things can
only get go down from, here and given his, STYLE
i really think, that you, know he's going to be
vulnerable moving.
Speaker 4 (01:33:41):
FORWARD i came to the same. Conclusion it would be
different if there was an up and Coming Mike tyson
or some challenge to try to. Overcome but now it's
really Against. Dubois if he, loses it's it's an, upset
and if he, wins it's the abet him the first.
TIME i don't know what's out there other than large.
(01:34:02):
Paychecks if you like what you heard With Matthew aguilar,

right let's uh get to the. Picks love this. Game
uh in THE Sec auburn At. Kentucky kentucky getting some
guys healthy. Again they're a lot. There there are a
(01:37:42):
case study a lot Like illinois that they've had some
key players go down and they've lost some games as a.
Result this could be. Interesting auburn's on the, road maybe
kind of do for a.
Speaker 3 (01:37:51):
Loss MAYBE i think this is obviously this is a
difficult place to play and rap And kentucky's getting a
little more. Healthy, kentucky he's got some great. WINS i,
mean you know they've Had they've got some good wins this.
Season but, yeah BUT i would say, THIS i Think
auburn is. Better Obviously kentucky did Beat, duke But i'm
(01:38:12):
gonna go With i'm gonna go With auburn in this.
ONE i think they're still the team to be in THE,
ncaa AND i think they win this.
Speaker 4 (01:38:19):
ONE i totally. AGREE i just think they got too
much for The.
Speaker 2 (01:38:23):
Wildcats i'm gonna go, upset and not just Because i'm
sitting IN. Bbn i'm gonna go WITH uk in this.
One so we'll see what. Happens maybe maybe him last,
place like, You, mike.
Speaker 4 (01:38:35):
Staying in Great.
Speaker 2 (01:38:40):
Alabama and tennessee what you.
Speaker 3 (01:38:42):
GOT i this is The this is the battle of
the best defense in the, country or perhaps one of
the top two defense in the, country and probably the
best offense in the country when you look at these
guys head to, head and SO i think this is
a fun match. MATCHUP i don't think, that you, KNOW
i don't know if you're gonna completely slow Down alabama
(01:39:03):
or Stop, alabama or you're gonna you can slow them
down a little. Bit And tennessee's just gotta be able
to score enough to hang with them with even with
their great. Defense But i'm gonna pick the volunteers in
this one to get the win Over.
Speaker 4 (01:39:13):
Obama, YEAH i Think tennessee at home that they should
be able to pull this.
Speaker 2 (01:39:19):
Out, BOY i am going way against, you. Guys i'm
Taking alabama in this. ONE i Just tennessee is just
Love Rick barnes and just the parts of this. Team but,
boy they're just so. Inconsistent, uh we'll see If Rocky
top can get it don at. Home i'm going with
The Crimson. Tide all, Right let's go to The Big
Ten wisconsin At Michigan, state the first of That Big
(01:39:40):
ten Doubleheaders sunday ON.
Speaker 3 (01:39:42):
Cbs all, Right i'm going for The shaker. Here this
is the. One i'm picking The badgers to win this.
One Michigan state coming off The Hail mary win over Over.
MARYLAND i just think The badgers are a. Team you,
know when they're, clicking they're really hard to. Beat you,
know they were they should a lot of, Threes AND
i Think Michigan state will overhelp allow them to hit
three to shoot, threes AND i think they'll make enough
(01:40:03):
to pull the.
Speaker 4 (01:40:04):
Upset, yeah AND i think this one at, HOME i
Expect Michigan state to. Win and While wisconsin's a good,
TEAM i just Think Michigan state's, defense coupled with a
little bit OF wwe rules that are famous For, CHRYSLER
i don't excuse me For. BRESLAN i don't see A
wisconsin win up.
Speaker 2 (01:40:24):
There, Yeah i'm one of the upset of The. Badgers
to The badgers upsetting A Michigan, state they kind of With,
brad they kind of had their moment of the. NIGHT
i still Think Michigan state's still they're going to. SHOW
i think in the end they're the best team in
The Big. TEN i think they're gonna be the regular season,
champs BUT i think they follow in this. One, Finally
Ann Arbor game number two ON cbs On sunday two
(01:40:46):
forty Five Central. Time THE aligni At michigan At, CHRYSLER
a little tiny arena up.
Speaker 3 (01:40:53):

LINE i get the. Upset they're, hot they're, healthy they're.
Ready to.

YouTube or on x as we do THE Aligna Guys
Halftime live AND Aligni GUYS i on The LIGNE I
live after the. Game should be a lot of. Fun pretty.
Speaker 2 (01:41:23):
Cool, yeah it's it's really, cool a lot of. Fun i'm.
Going i'm Going. Illinois you, Know i'm a. Believer After tuesday,
NIGHT i think they're going to write the. SHIP i
believe they're going to find some. Consistency with the extra
time off, here they've had to kind of rest up
and figure things, out drill through and get some things.
Done don't read your. Listen they're not gonna be, ranked
(01:41:43):
so it's not like they're you, know you got to
bring them down and get their head out of the
clouds or. SOMETHING i, mean you, know you're still you're
trying to get your nineteenth. Win BUT i think they
get to. Win.
Speaker 3 (01:41:52):
Uh when's the last Time illinois lost To. MICHIGAN i
mean it was obviously Pre. Juwan John howard never Beat Brad,
