Interview by Kris Peters
As with every other year, anticipation surrounding the first line up announcement for Good Things 2025 was almost at a fever pitch. Social media experts and promoter wannabe's all shared their projected line-ups - but most were well off the mark.
Good Things is possibly one of the hardest festival line ups armchair critics get to sink their teeth into, with the diversity and seemingly flippant mashing of genres meaning pretty much any band from any genre could make the final cut. And this year was no exception.
When TOOL were announced as headliners, a large number of punters were already scrambling for tickets, but a quick scan through the rest of the line up proves the eclectic tastes of organisers and the variety of live music on show for fans of most persuasions.
Rock? Tick. Weezer, Garbage.
Pop Punk? Tick. All Time Low, New Found Glory.
Punk? Tick. Refused.
Metal? Big tick. Machine Head. Knocked Loose, Lorna Shore.
But there was one band name there that defied expectations. A band not even from this planet. A band dubbed 'Scumdogs Of The Universe'. A band like no other…
And that band is GWAR. These guys have been devastating audiences the world over for more than 40 years, their incredible backstory and characters resonating just as much as their music. But it is in the live arena that GWAR excels. Their stage shows are legendary, so much so that filmmakers were driven to make a documentary on the band and their history called This Is Gwar.
Yes, ladies and metalheads. This IS GWAR. And what follows is a brief transcript of HEAVY's interview with frontman Blöthar the Berserker, who, as you will be able to tell, is keen to get back to Australia and convert the country en route to enslaving the world. With Good Things sharing the same calendar month as Christmas, we ask Blothar if GWAR will be filling their red sacks with surprises for Aussie fans.
"(laughing) Well… mostly, when it comes to Christmas, we don't really hand out gifts as much as we take them," he offered. "Gwar is keeping alive that horrible tradition that the Dutch have, Black Pete. Can you believe that they did that? Who do these people think they are? But, seriously, that's what we do. We kidnap children, and we stuff them into stockings, and we turn them into coal and all of that stuff, then we run off with them to Morocco, or something like that. GWAR's not big on Christmas. We are friends with Krampus, though."
We run through the line-up again and reiterate our early observation that GWAR are the proverbial black sheep of the Good Things line up, a point which is not lost on Blothar as we ask if the people of Australia are ready for the carnage.
"I don't know. They loved it last time that the band went down there," he shrugged. "We took a swipe at Tony Abbott and everybody got all upset - boo hoo - but I don't even know what's going on politically in Australia now. We've been very busy… we've got our own problems here to worry about. I think Australians are gonna love GWAR. GWAR is a band that is funny. That's the difference. And let me be clear about that. You go see a heavy metal band… you don't go and see a lot of heavy metal bands where everyone you look at is smiling. They're laughing and having a good time. They can't believe they're seeing… they feel inspired to go and do something creative themselves. That's what GWAR is. That is what GWAR is."
In the full interview, Blothar talks more about the line up and gives his thoughts on spreading so many different genres through a festival, what has changed with GWAR since they were last out here, battling the oppressive Australian heat, what three songs punters should listen to if they aren't familiar with the band, where to research the backstory and find out more about the GWAR universe, their latest album The Return Of Gor Gor and how it was received, reaching 40 years as a band and more.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
I am the Berserker Blows are of the immortal shock
rock Kings of the Universe War and we're coming.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
We're gonna play the Good Things Spestival. Good Thanks, Good
Things in Australia. I think that's what good things. Yeah,
it's good things.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Yeah, it's good Thief and today thanks for joining us today,
rather pleasure to speak with you. Yeah, man, sometimes you say,
Gar have just been an abscest part of this year's
Good Things Festival, which picks off in the Melbourne of
December the fifth, and it's kidn't he and Brisbane of
the consecutive days? That's pretty close to Christmas? Might he
going to be bringing a stack full of goodies with
you for the kiddings?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Well, uh, you know, mostly when it comes to Christmas,
we don't really hand out gifts as much as we
take them. Gar is a sort of keeping alive that
horrible tradition that the Dutch have black people. Can you
believe that they did that? Who do these people think?
They are? Absolutely racist? I will tell you, but seriously,

(01:04):
I mean, that's what we do. We kidnap children and
we stuffed them into stockings, and we turned them into
coal and all of that stuff. And then we, uh,
I don't know, run off with them to Morocco or
something like that. But yeah, War's not big on Christmas.
We are friends with Crampus though he's a bud.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
But do me a favorite. If you happen to come
across my kids and your kidnap them, die, worry about returning.
I'm okay, just tell you.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
I know that's right. That's what they always say Australian kids.
Nobody wants them back, No good things.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
That's a pretty diverse line up this CFI with yourselves.
There's tool ways of Garbage, machine Head refused, there's a
lot of different sorts of bands by it. But what's
your opinion on festivals? Should they have a wide range
of music and genres or even more of a traditionalist
than think it should be bruttle start to finish?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Now, I have always liked you know, look, I don't
know what happened in the world. It used to be,
especially in punk rock, right, like you go in the
old days, and well by the old days, I mean
you know, the eighties and nineties, Like you'd go to it,
you go see the butthole Surfers, you'd go see Gwar,
you'd go see. I don't know, loving rockets whatever, right

(02:16):
and and nobody thought anything of it. It's not like,
oh everything's so different, it's gotta all be the same.
I love that. I love it when it's just good, underground,
alternative ish, although now it's I don't know, it's hard
to even say what the hell it is. But I
mean a bandlike Tools definitely kept it real, you know,
machine Head, Weezer, all these band it's gonna be great.

(02:41):
I love having a wide range of bands. I mean,
keeps me interested anyway.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
I don't it's fanta say that I'm the gar are
gonna be the most out there and reckless and cool
looking band at the whole festival my life. Do you
think these trying crams or the people and good things
are ready for what cause can to deliver?

Speaker 2 (03:05):
I don't know. I mean they loved it last time
that that that the band went down there, and you know,
uh Odorous said we took a swipe at Tony Abbott.
Everybody got all upset boohoo. But you know, I don't
even know what's going on. Uh politically in Australia. Now
we've been very good, We've got our own problems. Here

(03:25):
to worry about, and so you know, we're kind of
not paying attention. But I think that I think Australians
English speaking people they're gonna love War. War is a
band that is funny. That's the difference. And let me
be clear about that. You go see a heavy metal band,

(03:49):
I don't know, you just you don't go see a
lot of heavy metal bands, and everybody that you look
at is smiling, they're laughing, they're having a good time.
They can't believe what they're seeing. They feel inspired to
go do something creative themselves. That's what warried. That is
what War is.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah, I think of the one of the best things
about festivals. But is it people get the chance to
see bands that I might not otherwise go and check out.
So today someone's gotten the good thing from that night
night too much about War? What three songs of your
should they listen to in order to get to know
the band of bit better?

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Hey, I think I think the newest one, A Lot Lizard,
is a good place to start. Uh A Lot Lizard,
Uh go back and check out uh this toilet Earth,
the song I mean gorgor Great Tune and uh you

(04:47):
know those are two that I would recommend and maybe
maybe Solomonizer or maggots are falling like rain something one
of the classics.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
The coastumes are awesome, but they also look very hot.
So does anyone warned you that the average December temperature
in Brisbane is thirty degrees firenheyde or sorry, thirty degrees
or eighty six fahrenheit like im, I want to throw
it out.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
It's okay, man, We've played the surface of the Sun.
We can handle this, trust me. There's no way eighty
six is nothing. We played Phoenix, Arizona in the middle
of the summer time one hundred and eighteen degrees on
the Warped tour. Yeah, we can. We can handle it.
Don't worry. Although we do keep getting older, which sucks.

(05:32):
But uh, and I've noticed that, you know, the Warped
tour we did I guess, I don't know, ten years
ago something like that. And now we go out and
it's definitely it helps to have a shorter set, but
we have a shorter.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Now. Core and Nach remember have a backstory that explains
the costume from the concepts in more detail. Again, for
those who might not nineteen about the band but want
to find out before they come to good things. Where's
the best place to go and catch up on the backstory?

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Guar dot net. You can find all the law right there,
and I will remind you that Gore was a band
that had law when bands didn't have lore. Now all
of a sudden, everybody's got law like that. Lore is
actually a thing that people are saying, you know what,
go screw yourselves.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
We've got lord.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
We've always had law.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
The kings of law, and Australians love law.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Look at it. It's a country of nothing but bullshitters.
I know that for a fact. I love it. I
love how Australians managed to. You know, my child speaks
with an Australian accent because of that damn Bluey Show.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
I'd love to answer for us, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
I love it? Though she really does. She's quite good
at it.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Did you know the Blowye is actually a girl?

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, she knows about it.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
This my daughter pointed out to me the other day, and
under stories aimed there was a boy dog No.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
No, no, Yeah, Blue is a girl. Bluis m being though.
Oh I know the whole I know the whole script. Look,
I know them all Mackenzie your name.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
See if you get him to make he gets to appearance,
stays with you all your audia.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Well, I think that bandit is an old rock and
roll singer.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
So never I never know kidding me, I.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Might actually be cool to my kid if I never
about that to happen.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Mate, if I hang around, if they think you're cool.
For released the lightest album, the Return of Go Go
Back off July, the twenty fifty nine lock and that's
it been that long, but now it's a response. Been
for it.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
It's been great. People love it and it's you know,
it's it's wild metal punk extravaganza. Man, it's uh fast stuff.
We've got a new guitar player, Grotius. He's a contributing
a lot. And uh, it's a fun song for song
to sing. H. I'm talking about the actual song lot

(08:04):
of Hazard. But uh, then the other two ones are
they're a lot of fun too. We haven't played them
live yet, so I'm not sure how that's gonna go,
but I'm sure it'll be fun. But yeah, I mean
it's it's it's got a comic with it. It's got
a whole story and war has a rich tradition with
underground comics. We've always been Ah, that's been a big
part of what we do as comics. So having a

(08:27):
comic book and some music that goes with it out,
that's kind of the way we want to do things
from now.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Yeah, run as straight. That concept a be more made
the ideas behind it, because the album was part studio,
part live and conceptually based with the comic as you say,
so on the thought process behind doing.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
That, Ah, well, I mean we wanted to you know,
we've been out. One thing really is just that the
band has been sounding so good live, uh, really the
best that it sounded in years, and we wanted to
capture that. And we had a set where we did
some cool stuff and Gar there's a lot you know, Gar,

(09:05):
it's not just a metal band, it's not just a
it's a theatrical performance and there's a lot of improv
that goes on, not really stand up comedy, but skit
improv type stuff. We wanted to include some of that,
uh And and the feeling of what a live show
is like now with Guar, and we wanted to the

(09:28):
story uh is really just based on a train wreck
uh uh, which sort of symbolizes gwar too, right, So
circus train that's on the road full of freaks and
and uh they have a seance, some kind of weird
mystical thing, and they summon this big dinosaur that's just

(09:49):
given birth to a little egg, and we hit her,
we kill her, she's dead. We wind up with this
egg that we've got to take care of. H So
it's kind of like a crappy version of Dumbo or
something like that. Uh, you know, and you remember how
heart wrenching that was. Nobody should have been required to
watch dumber. Let me tell you something, least of all

(10:11):
children eventually, Yeah, horrible, But uh so it's it's sort
of that. And then you know, Gorgor, being a young person,
he doesn't know shit because that's what young people know.
Jack shit, nothing, you hear me, And they screw everything up.
And so he takes a potshot at his parents. He

(10:32):
figures he's gonna go out and blow truckers for a
living and be a lot lizard. You know, there's no
manual for parenting. I wish there was, because I would.
I don't know how to do it right.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
I'll tell you Gorgorp as we go along, brother.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Oh yeah, endlessly, endlessly disappointing. But uh you know, what
do you do? You gotta love them through.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
It all sided? How about most I marched the fortieth
anniversary of Gore right like that. It's not a bad
effort for a band dubbed the Scumbage of the Universe.
Well doesn't it just comebacks?

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Stop dog dig dog.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
I don't like scumbags. I don't like going anyone.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
Thumbags is better, thumbbags is better. Yeah, you're right, You're right,
You're absolutely right. It is a long time Lordie Lardie
Lukhu's party. It's ugly old war and uh yeah, I
mean you know, we're trying to make it a like
to meet somebody at the Christmas party. If you know
what I'm talking about.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
We we nuns.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Such a little kiss, a little scene too, something proper.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Before I let you go, brother, I've started a new
segment called photo Bombs, so I basically trolled your social media.
I've come up with a few photos. I want to
ask a bit more about. Like we spoke briefly about
your stage show before. But this is what Australians can expect,
isn't it. Oh yeah, what's the blood.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Yeah, that's right. A lot of sort of indeterminate gender
beings squirming around. Looks like they've all got scabies and
herpes and I don't know. And then us just spraying stuff,
just spray it stuff. Yeah, that's what we do. We

(12:14):
spray it. A bunch of naked, half naked old dudes.
You can expect that too. Sexy man ass right up there,
hunts the meat.

Speaker 3 (12:24):
I'll tell you that security God start him from there.
Doesn't look like he's offering the best.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yes, no, they never do. They never do look at him.
It's always it's always difficult for them. What I love
is when they just turn around and watch the show
and just let people like plummet to their deaths in
the in the pit.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Safety first, Uh, now go one more to show you too, bro, Like,
oh no, think it's a cute fighter. But a lot
of people will disagreeing, Like, what's the worst reaction you've
ever got from my kid?

Speaker 2 (13:00):
Oh no, what's I've never even seen this photo? What's
wrong with that child's face?

Speaker 3 (13:05):
It looks like, yeah, well, I'll bet you she's shooting
us olf.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
What's the what's the the explorer there? I don't know,
I mean, that's that's Sawboord Destructo probably looks like he's
I don't know, he's usually you can usually find him
at like a likes to hang around at big women's
department stores.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
What's the general reaction when kids see you guys, like
do they do? They love you?

Speaker 2 (13:34):
They hid? I mean, sometimes they love it and sometimes
they they are scared. But uh usually weirdly enough, kids
tend to like war. The kids, uh, little kids, they
realize that it's funny. I mean, you know, I know
some children that they don't like. They don't like the

(13:56):
masks and stuff when they're sitting there, but once we
put them on.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
They're like, oh yeah, ok, yeah sure all right, brother, Well,
thanks very much for your time. Could have been a pleasure.
Chattey there Guara in Australia for a good thing kicking
off on December the fifth, and guaranteed they're going to
be one of the acts of the day. You do
not want to miss, brothers, So we'll see you in
a couple of months, all right, take care brother
