when someone we know and love doesnot feel comfortable and the body that they
(00:46):
were born into. We'll meet Susanand her little sister Jackie. They do
everything together as Jackie grows from atiny baby into a young girl. But
when jack he begins to explore dressingand presenting, like how Susan feels a
boy wood and even demands now tobe called jack Susan has big feelings about
(01:12):
her new siblings. Decision here tointroduce the story is our story time voice
as guest our friend Tucker, hermy nearest Tucker, eight years old from
California. My book is called jackNot Jackie by Erica Silverman. Thank you,
(01:37):
Tucker for that wonderful introduction. Nowlet's get comfy, cozy and ready
to open our hearts. And mindswith jack not Jackie, written by Erica
Silverman, jack not Jackie. Hi, my name Miss Susan, and my
(02:10):
sister Jackie has the best giggle. She's a baby, and when she stares
at me with her big round eyes, my heart dispeels all bubbly. Sometimes
I like to lean down in herear and whisper, oh, baby Jackie,
when you get bigger, we'll playin my tent and will twirl and
(02:30):
twirl like forest fairies, and we'llbe explorers together. And baby Jackie really
likes it. Right now, Jackiesleeps and and she eats and and she
burps and hiccups, and sometimes Mamaeven lets me hold her. I love
(02:50):
my baby sister Jackie. I lovewhen she giggles just for me. She
gets a little bit older, andthen she starts to crawl everywhere, and
I say, Jackie, let's bekittiecats yam yaw yaw, and baby Jackie
responds luff luf lef, And Ijust love baby Jackie's giggle. Every day
(03:15):
we play Peekaboo together and I putmy hands over my eyes, and Jackie
says to me, boo boo boo. Except today she decided to say,
su Su. I get so excited. I call out for my mom and
dad, Mama, Daddy, Ishout, Jackie just said my name.
(03:36):
I mean, I know my nameis really Susan, but now I like
su Su too, because I likethe way that my sister Jackie says it.
As soon as Jackie can walk, she runs. I chase her through
the park, but she's so fast. Don't fallow, Jackie, I say
to her, be careful, goodthing. My little sister, Jackie loves
(04:00):
dinosaur band aids because she needs thema lot. Jackie also likes to play
in mud. She likes mud puddlesand mud pies. And my sister just
likes anything with mud. But me, Ick, I do not like mud.
Now that Jackie's older, I liketo braid her hair a bit and
(04:23):
put ribbons in it. Let's beforest fairies, Jackie, I say to
her, as I just finished thelast ribbon on her hair. Jackie jumps
up and screams ill and pulls everysingle ribbon out. I look at her
and say, oh, never mind, I guess we can be explorers then.
(04:43):
And just then Jackie gets so excitedthat she puts on her cape.
Oh she wears that silly superhero capeeverywhere. I just don't understand it,
Jackie. Explorers don't wear capes,I tell her. So what says Jackie?
I can fly and I can buzzand I'm Superbug And she jumps off
(05:06):
the bed and whooshes away. ForJackie's birthday, Mama bought her a brand
new dress, but Jackie's really upsetand throws it on the floor and starts
to cry. M Daddy says, rubbing his chin, someone does not like
(05:26):
her new dress. He says, that's okay. She can wear whatever feels
right, says Mama. So Jackiegrabs Daddy's hat and puts it on her
head and his vest. Then sherubs her chin and says, I look
like daddy, Just like Daddy, only smaller, and Jackie begins to giggle.
(05:53):
Jackie's gotten older now, and whenwe go shopping for clothes for school,
Jackie immediately runs to the boys actionevery time we get into the store.
No, not there, Jackie,I shout. Over here, I
say, pointing over to the girl'ssection. We shop over here, not
(06:13):
the boy part. Boop. Weshop over here where the girls stuff is,
not where the boy stuff is.But Jackie doesn't listen. She picks
out a pair of shorts and ashirt and a baseball cap and a tie.
I get so annoyed. Why doesshe have to dress like this?
(06:34):
Oh? No, ties, Isay to her, snatching it out of
her hands. Jackie got very upset, grabs it back and screams mine,
but I don't understand. And Iyelled back to her, but ties her
for boys, and you're a girl, Jackie a girl. Jackie stops and
(06:55):
looks at Mama, very sad,and Mama responds, we wear what feels
right. Remember, I get frustratedand I cross my hands over my chest
and I say, no, it'swrong. Jackie is a girl, so
she needs to wear girl clothes likeme. Not wrong, Susu says Mama.
(07:17):
Jackie's just different. She wears whatshe likes, not what everyone tells
her to wear, and that isokay. We decide to go to the
park and Jackie wears her new baseballcap while I swing on the monkey bars.
Jackie plays with a little boy overin the sandbox. Together they push
(07:38):
little cars over bumpy roads and yellroom, room room. She is always
playing with the boys. She neverwants to play with me anymore, and
definitely doesn't like fairy princesses. Timeto go, says daddy. Bye,
Roy, says Jackie, waving toher friend Bye. Jack calls the boy.
(08:01):
I hear this, and I amshocked jack I ask her, but
your name is Jackiet, and Jackieimmediately cuts me off and screams no,
no, no, no no.Then Jackie yells some more, covers her
ears, and sticks her tongue outat me. I don't understand. I'm
(08:22):
just telling her that her name isJackie, not jack Why is she so
upset? We all walk slowly awayfrom the park, separate. I'm upset,
Jackie's upset, and even mom andDaddy are a little confused. Nobody
says anything the whole way home. The next day is haircut day, and
(08:46):
I go first. I have verylong, long, blonde hair, and
I tell Mamma, not too much, please, I like it long and
swingy. But Jackie says more andmore and more when it's her turn,
and Mama starts to cut. SoMama cuts and cuts and keeps cutting,
(09:07):
and I watch horrified as her hairkeeps getting shorter and shorter and shorter,
and finally I shout, stop,Mama, stop, Jackie looks like a
boy now, Jackie screams, proudlylooking in the mirror, I am a
boy. Mama takes the scissors downand stands back quiet. Finally, she
(09:30):
says, well, Jackie's been tryingto tell us that for a long time,
haven't you, Jackie, and Jackienods. Jackie turns and walks over
to me with big round eyes andwith a smile on her face because she
loves her new haircut. She says, please, SUSU call me jack not
(09:52):
Jackie. I look back at her, sad and confused. But Jackie,
you my sister, and your nameis Jackie. Jack replies, no,
Susu, I am your brother.I am a boy, and my name
is jack I shout back. Idon't want a brother, I want my
(10:16):
sister. I want my sister back, and we both start to scream and
cry. I run away as fastas I can. I hide in my
tent and I'm hiccoming now from cryingso much, and my tommy hurts.
And then I remember when Jackie wasjust a tiny, little hiccoming baby,
(10:37):
and Mommy would let me hold herin my arms. I pick up some Craye
