Once you get off the tram, you will see a square on both sides of the road. This is Statue Square, a public square built entirely on reclaimed land (from the sea) at the end of the 19th century.Initially, it was called Royal Square, for effigies of the British Royal family were installed here. However, most of them were removed by the Japanese, who occupied Hong Kong during WWll. Altogether there were about 10 effigies standing here, including statues of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, King Edward Vll, and so on, now there is just one statue left - that of Sir Thomas Jackson, 1st baronet and HSBC banker. In the northern part of the square, which is on your left, there is the Cenotaph - a memorial to Hong Kong residents who were killed in the two world wars.By the eastern side of the southern section of the square is the Old Supreme Court Building. Please go to it; it is next point on our tour.
