(00:16):
We walk amongst ghosts every day,be it sights of war and strife,
are poverty and horror. The twisting, snaking paths are beautiful but can lead
us to some things undiscovered and terrifying. From the Mississippi Delta to the jungles
of the far East, the deaddemand to be acknowledged. This is what
(00:41):
we do here. Welcome to theHouse of Asher. Hey there, Hi,
there, ho there. Yes,you are listening to the House of
Asher. I'm your host, SteveAsher and uh are doing pretty good.
(01:02):
We are hanging out. It's laterin the evening. It's actually the day
after the fourth of July. Peopleare still popping off fireworks because by God,
we like to see stuff blow up, and that's what we do.
Especially, you know, this issomething about it this time of year.
(01:23):
There's just I don't know, wejust like to light up stuff. You
know that the breeze is full ofthe scent of gunpowder. It's it's unique.
It's unique. I try to explainit to people from other parts of
the world and they just sort oflook at you. They get the festival
(01:46):
atmosphere, they get the holiday vibe. It's just, you know, America
and that's what it's about. Don'tdon't try to understand this, leaves and
gentlemen. We do what we doand that's how we do it. M
Sorry, I had to get alittle sip of my coffee. So we're
(02:10):
going into summer part of it.We're basically in summer now. Those who
know about my negative home of Kentucky, which I talk about other stuff,
but I'm talking about Kentucky today becauseyou know what I do what I want.
So anyway, this area has it'sa fair amount of curious and interesting
(02:36):
cryptids. Okay, Uh, basicallythat can cover anything from like Bigfoot,
Pope, Monster Mothman, which yes, Mothman is part of the Kentucky cryptids
as well. Everybody thinks it's soall the way just in Virginia. No,
there's a very narrow river between thetwo, and it's been spotted on
(02:58):
either side and it's had issues one side of it. So let's not
get it twisted about our cryptids.Okay, But some of the lesser known
or less lesser spoken about cryptids I'mgonna touch on, including one from my
(03:19):
home county of Caldwell. But firstI'm gonna touch on one this guy was
I'm trying to remember where are theyseen it at. I'm not for sure
precisely what county I think it was. Was it Nicholas County? Yeah,
I think it was Nicholas County.Anyway, This was known as barrilla.
(03:44):
Okay, say that a couple oftimes fast. That's that's kind of fun.
Barrilla, barrilla, barrilla, barrilla. Anyway. This is basically a
do you call it a camara ora hybrid of will bear a bear and
(04:06):
rilla a gorilla. I don't knowwhy they didn't call it a gorilla or
burgerrilla. I don't know. Iguess that makes more sense. I would
suck a name in these anyway. But what's weird It actually refers to a
creature with the body of a bear. Makes sense in the face of a
wolf or some sort of really vicioushellhound canine type creature. I've talked to
(04:31):
some hunters, meaning in the fieldof cryptozoology, and we've talked about this.
There's one guys particular, I'm goingto say his name because I don't
want to say unless I get himon the show, and he's talked about
encountering these and the thing is alot of times, you know, people
in this area, it's very prettyurban, are very part of me,
(04:55):
very rural rather and they might bedriving to their bar early in the morning
because days start early. One guyhad reported seeing a beast standing at least
six to seven foot tall. Somehave reported it being closer to eight foot,
but you know, in the heatof the muet and if it's not
a landmark to say, okay,he was at his head hit that tree
(05:18):
that's still there, and you cankind of gauge it, it's really hard
to say. Apparently this creature hadlong, shaggy white hair, a somewhat
haunched posture, which you know what, it could actually have been nine or
ten feet if it was kind ofhunkered over. You know, I don't
know why it would do that, but maybe that's just what it does.
(05:40):
And it said it had a distinctlycanine face. Now, some people's actually
been interviewed by local media, beit newspapers or television or whatever, it
referred to a creature as a halfbear, half gorilla. So for the
reason, the name stuck. Butmore subsequent reports emphasized that the creature had
(06:03):
had more had like more wolf likefeatures canine like features. Now it's been
spotted throughout Kentucky sporadically now again.Descriptions generally are of a large white pedal
creature covered in a light, thick, kind of stout fur like you can
(06:26):
think of like a dog when itgets his hackles up, the very pronounced
with a very pronounced snout and pointedears. So you know, it could
be an unknown species of primate. It could be this that I don't know.
Maybe nights get lonely in Kentucky, guys. Maybe maybe a bear and
(06:47):
a dog spent a little special time. I'm out here to judge, but
there we are. The next oneI'm gonna talk about is the sheep squatch,
because who doesn't want their cryptids alittle bit on the woolier side,
right, nice, good, goodcryptid. You know, if you're out
wintertime, they snuggle up with you. It's nice. It's nice, right.
(07:10):
Well. This supposedly is a sheephuman hybrid said to roam the hills
of Kentucky, also known as thewhite Thing, or in my neighborhood we
call it a white thing, anddescribed to have the body of a man
the head of a sheep, coveredin shaggy white fur. Now. Sightings
of this creature have been reported invarious parts of Kentucky, but it seems
(07:35):
to have a particular affinity for breckinRidge County. So you guys up in
that area, keep an eye out, keep an air out, and just
be chill. You know what,I understand. They've Gial has not been
reported to be violent toward people, you know, or some people might say,
(08:00):
you know, they thought maybe perhapsthey were a little bad. God,
I'm so sorry. I had todo it. I had to do
dad jokes, deal with it anyway. This They were actually featured on the
Monsters and Mysteries of America series, which you know again, they talked about
creatures about seven foot tall, hadlike a sheep, even had the curled
(08:22):
horns and everything. It would leadout a bone chilling scream before ducking off
into the woods, leaving whoever they'revisibly shaken now they you know, some
people talked about certain creatures similar tothem, like, oh, golly,
what was his name? Pop lipmonster, which has a what do you
(08:48):
call it? Sheepish, goatish whateverthat particular line of animal knowledge is.
If you know what it is,please put it in the messages below.
I probably should have mentioned way wayearlier that you're probably listening to us on
YouTube, perhaps Spreaker, which isthe mothership of the show. iHeart a
(09:16):
whole bunch of different little places.Just look it up and are punching Google
for House of Asher. Check outSteve Asher, stevee Asher, stevee Asher
Studios. Actually you can do Steveasherdot studios dot com to go to my
direct web page and it has linksto different things, different books, different
appearances and whatnot. Now, Ithink most of you guys probably know about
(09:41):
Kelly green Man, which I'm notgoing to get into a lot. Now,
if you want me to do onespecifically on it, leave your comments.
I'm going to talk about one thatis, well, it's not really
as spooky or intimidating. It's theones I mentioned before. But there's a
giraffe possum creature which I'm trying tounderstand. That is it like a really
(10:07):
long legged critter with just like alittle possum head, or it's like a
possum with like a crazy long neck. That's that's freaking weird. I don't
know how they would do that, but apparently in nineteen seventy five, a
driver was near the town of Winchestersaw several strange dog sized animals standing in
(10:28):
the field along Highway sixty. Highwaysixty actually runs through through this area as
well. The creatures were described ashaving long snouts, large ears, and
short, bristly gray firm which thecombination that led to the witness to dub
them giraffe possums. Wow, Idon't know. I think I would have
(10:48):
found something maybe a little bit betterthan that. Gerrossalems you're girossalm. You
know that. That's I'm gonna startusing that apparently either case, if it
was a thing of mistaken identity orjust an exaggeration, this has became a
charming example of how Kentucky's rich wildlifean active imagination could combine to create new
(11:11):
additions to the state. Cryptid Patieri, Yeah, well there's that I probably
would mention, like the Harrington Lakemonster. This is known as Henry or
the eel pig, because why not. Now, this was around Harrington Lake,
(11:33):
as I've said, a man madereservoir created by damning the dick.
This is the name. I'm notmaking it up. Dix River, River
of Dix in nineteen twenty five.Apparently this was a twelve to fifteen foot
in length creature with a slender bodylike an eel, but with a distinctive
(11:56):
snout and curly tale of a pig, hence the nickname pig. This goes
all the way back to the nineteentwenties, but the most compelling accounts come
from the nineteen seventy. It seemedlike the nineteen seventies was just bumping for
cryptids, stuff like six Million DollarMan and Land of the Lost and just
(12:16):
all those really groovy like the CroftBrothers anyway, all kinds of crazy stuff.
But anyway, One person described itas having a humped back a tail
that measured between twelve and fifteen feetlong. Some thought it could have actually
been a descendant of an ancient speciesthat was trapped in the lake after it
(12:41):
went down when the caves were floodedby the creation of the lake. That's
trippy. Suppose that we have anoctopus who knew so, the Burnsboro octopus.
Now this is right around the KentuckyLake. This was spotted way back
in nineteen forty four. A persongot attacked suction marks room their legs.
(13:07):
They looked, and they even startednoticing that they having animals dead and floating
away. Some people claim to haveseeing massive gray I have to put slight
creatures emerging from the depths and crawlingonto the river bank bank bank. But
as freaky as that is, andas weird as that is, we're just
one I ever knew of was theCallwell County, or better known Princeton pig
(13:33):
Man, which was known to bedown close to the Highland Baptist Church where
there had been a death of achild. Supposedly a brother of the child
went mad after the baby was fedto the pigs. Yeah, supposedly he
(13:54):
he come back and butchered the pigs, skinned them alive, disappeared with their
skins. It was quite mad,And to this day people say they can
still hear the squills and the screamsof the child and the brother driven mad
by the death of their loved one. But on that note, sim say
(14:18):
good by and life. How wouldn'tchiefly enjoy the rest of the day.
But as he like golf, thesun and the shadows get long, lean
from thember to look towards the darkness. Because there's anology there, there's always
(14:41):
learning to be done out until nexttime. Stay scared. Everyone's here.
