I kept bowemashing and I never gaveup me believing in myself. It's
(06:57):
the way I came up. Youdon't make believe the team missus Robert Porter
(07:21):
with I Love Samardino County Radio showon Casey A NBC one Oh six point
five f M ten fifty Am.Well we will talk politics, culture in
history. What's up? Team?We got a full housand, yeah,
but we'll start over there with Jesse. What's up, Jesse? How you
been doing it? I'm go ahead, Kim. I am Kim's candidate for
(07:47):
San Marnandina City Council. War fiveawesome. This is if Jonny Locker the
Motivational Realizations. Hey, my nameis Elizabeth Cruise. I'm with the Elksladge
Nuber eight thirty six Antler Youth Group. Good evening. I'm Letty Briggs with
the samer Nandino YMCA, and I'mRobert Porter. I love Sam Brenandino,
(08:07):
commissioner with the Arts and Historical PreservationCommission. And I just came from an
event at our Court Street Square.Oh that's not but we came from Court
Street Square Christmas tree lighting. Yes, all right, team, I'll get
it out real quick. It didn'tlight up right away, but it did
light up in like thirty seconds. But you'll see the video. But wow,
(08:30):
Sam, I made a huge entrancewith Frosty and his whole team of
Elves. It looks like they hadpresents. The ice skating was open,
beautiful, It was beautiful to takea picture in front of the tree.
All. I think I saw everycouncil member. I'm pretty sure. Yeah,
I think I saw everyone, SoI might even self Redhurritt wander on
(08:52):
up in there. So I thelast second, so everybody made it and
the people were there too, witha lot of kids. Rest right.
So when when you get kids enjoyingstuff, that means they will create good
memories which will create a nostalgia inthe future, and they will want to
do these things in our area.So I am on it with that.
(09:15):
So the other thing is we justdonated one hundred dollars Motivational Realization and recorded
Amy. I set it up atthe last second with a Liddy Gutfeld.
Amy gave the money to Liddy MudhaDJ Muda, one of my favorite DJs
ever. He announced it and theygot it on video. So, uh,
(09:37):
thank you so much for putting thatforward, and uh they were you
know, those kids are gonna bestoked. So she's gonna do random one
thing you just go yet beautiful thatget a lot of kids out, And
it's it's synthetic ice, synthetic izedTeam I free Frating they don't, So
you guys understand with a with alive feed for I love Samardino, they
(09:58):
don't allow lance cape mode anymore,so you guys got to do that.
I don't know, I don't understandwhy for the radio. You don't mind.
It don't matter. But uh,it was a great event. I
did have. I snuck out ofthere quick, but uh, you know,
I still had like five conversations asI was leaving, so that means
that it was a good event. You know, I saw a lot of
people that I hadn't seen a while. So getting back together man COVID didn't
(10:22):
take everything away, right, butI did have my trustee little spray.
I don't have any that little spraythat Sam you know, gives for your
alcohol spray. And I was likeeverybody, if I did pepper spray in
the eyes, it wouldn't be thesepeople because I was a county supervisor.
(10:46):
Voga. Would you like some loveseventh ward? Yeah? So it was
fun. It was I don't knowwhat Sammer do you needs? Right now?
We need to be able to gettogether and I'm all right, Well,
I'd like to mention our sponsor celebritiesbar and grow over on fortieth Street,
(11:09):
a max Ire and Zoe doing someincredible things in this community. They've
opened up a new juice it upthere. I either bought or for JJ's.
They own JJ's now and they wereworking with Brandy Iron. I'm not
sure how all that worked out, also because the Brandy Iron. The problem
was is the roof itself was neededwork and the owner was just not willing
(11:33):
to cut the money for it.So you know, they're that's probably a
lot of money. Yeah, theroofs can take it out. It can
actually bankrupt you, right, SoI understand that point. But maybe you
know, Max can make some moods, you know, go for it apsolutely.
It's our wonderful location. You know, it'd be sad to lose it.
(11:54):
But I feel like I've been inthe city since nineteen eighty four.
I remember my used to go thereand learn the country dance. Did you
go to college night from? Imean, I've never really been kicked out.
(12:16):
I have seen people kicked out,and I have plenty of friends that
were kicked out. We've had alot of our what I call like our
landmarks, like start us, likego away I did. I think that's
kind of a sad part of thestory though, Like I was going to
start us before it burned out, right, but nobody else was. There
(12:39):
was a field trip that used togo to North Park, but a lot
of the elementary schools went every singleyear, all the junior highs, everybody
would go to that. But thething was is like at the end when
they needed us the most, noone was going, right, That's what
just then it closed down, right, So you know, like that's what
it is. Like Brandon and Iaren too. I have to meet I.
(13:00):
I've not been there in a longtime, right, So it's up
to us team. We we haveto we have to utilize these businesses like
celebrities if we want them to bearound for another forty years. Go to
Green Check and order a Deli sandLa, head over to the fire Marie
gos or Mimi's Cafe, not what'sthe one on sun Sundowners, Yeah,
(13:24):
Sundowners. There's another one over therethough, and take a cafe one Job's
Joby's Diner there you a So yeah, these are the kinds of things we
got to shop at. So thankyou Max for doing what you do.
I did go to Juice it Up, his new spot, out there on
cala masof on Cherry Avenue and goodstuff there. Fortunately someone had broken the
(13:46):
wind already on him. An it'shard to be a business owner nowadays,
huh. And I actually want tospeak into the security over there. There
were several issues in that same area. So I'm even klam Mesa has issues
over there, right, So likeit's not just say I'm a Nadino team
this this this is this law kindof lawlessness kind of is around the whole
(14:09):
United States. It's in a littlebit of a former and it does coincide
with the increase of fentanyl and inmixtures of fentanyl and other drugs. That
tells me that it could be related. Well, it coincides with a lot
of the recent legislations. It's beena lot of legislation that's coming down the
(14:30):
pipeline that really isn't conducive to holdingpeople accountable. Yeah, I'm almost because
holding accountable costs so much money nowadays. I don't think that it's a money
It's like forty seven thousand dollars tohouse an inmate for a year, right,
It's more than that, And likethat that that's more money than I'm
making two years man, I'm poorboy. You know, I would love
(14:52):
to see the amount of money thatwe use to cassrate individuals each and every
year if we made those same kindof investments in those things act saying people
prior to their interactions with the system. Imagine if we invested fifty sixty seventy
thousand dollars in each individual in ourcommunity each year, you know what I
mean, the opportunities that they couldfind and the way they could utilize and
(15:13):
down to their passions, you know, build a business. Now you ain't
just getting the money. You're gonnabe held accountable. We want to see
the county. It has to bedone right right and but like we're gonna
pay to show you how to dothat. Kick. What said though,
is there are opportunities out there peoplelike you that have organizations. There's a
lot of nonprofits, especially within thecity of Samnidino, just like we're mentioning
(15:35):
Uplift Samonidino. I work for YouthAction Project. I'm currently the director of
operations. That's what we focus on, yes, exactly, But the problem
is it's the communication. It's usgetting that information out. You know,
I was a senior field representative forCounty Supervisor Joe Bacca Junior. I helped
initiate College and Career Day because it'sa fact that you know, kids in
(15:56):
their senior year sometimes they have noclue what they wanted to do. So
yeah, so we created a forumso to speak with different businesses, different
vocational trainings to let them know thisis what's out there for you. College
isn't for everyone. We get that. But if that's not the route for
you, this are other routes thatyou can take. These are other opportunities
(16:17):
for you. But we do haveto do a little bit better. Yes,
disclosure, there's always room for improvement. Yeah, you just reminded me.
I have just been invited to thetwenty thirty vision of the Sandy Getting
Fight School District. I am goingto be a community representative and give a
little more than they think I'm wantingto, but I'm going to be honest
(16:41):
with them, and I want tomake sure the experience for the kids through
twenty thirty is going to be worthwhile. Right, So we're gonna have some
early Samino history at least in there, right, and hopefully some some more
modern stuff as well. So that'swill be my angle is to integrate our
local history, not just Sam Nadino. But if you're in Hireland and that's
(17:03):
your school, but you're part ofsaying unified school district, well then you
should learn of some Highland history aswell, right, just like we're doing
with Native American cultures now. JamesRondo's at some of them. Ronald spearheaded
that movement to teach local indigenous culturesright from the area. That makes sense.
We should do the same thing withother things as well. Give some
give people something to be proud ofthat. There's many of people that have
(17:26):
grown up here and went on todo great success and make great impactful changes
in the world. And we couldbe the same, such as McDonald's you
know started hear xerox. You know, it's like a lot of things that
one on the influenced them. Ibelieve what was I believe? So yes,
yes, yes, yes. Andthen we have one of the best
animatronic studios in the world here.Well they're in the county Salmondino County,
(17:52):
the biggest county in the country. You know, that's I'll be repid.
So it's a good things. Thankyou for everything you've done for the schools.
That that just brought up. Youknow, the fact that we can
help the schools is the way wehelp our future. Sino, I always
say created me. So what Iwant to do is plant a thousand acorns
that will maybe one or two willgrow into that great oak that will help
(18:15):
our area Samarandino and stay here andlive be part of our community and the
rest of their lives. All right, thank you Max for everything you do.
I appreciate you. And manel overat Green Shak too. It's awesome
stand out of the week. I'msorry, Er, that's what you call
(18:41):
a brain fark? Can you saythat? But Eric Frnandez, he goes
around our community with his team.I believe there's not a pastor and his
wife goes with him and they theydid. They call it putting their hands
on people and they give them prayer, lay hands. And some people think
they don't agree with that, somepeople do whatever. But to me,
(19:02):
what it is is interaction with othersout there in our community during a time
when they're pretty much scowl like.People look at them very badly. Right,
So, if you're homeless person andit's ten o'clock at night, no
one wants to be near you usually, so to have someone that goes out
with a team and just ask themhow they are and give them a hug,
(19:25):
I mean anything better than that, recognizing their humanity? Yeah you know,
I mean Christian. I mean evenif even if you know this isn't
having but even if saneness or ritheistor whatever we're doing that, right,
I would still be like, thankyou for Google. You know you're in
touch. Yes, yes so theyand they probably can't get a lot of
(19:45):
human touch either, right, Sothat is just awesome to me and I
thank you for you know, he'salways posted on our of Sammernadino and uh
that that makes me realize, Wow, he does care about it. He
does his thing. So thank youvery much, Eric Hernandez San Bernadino.
Stand Out of the week and thatis brought to us by Ben Chopbas with
(20:06):
First Lineage Site Services. Thank youBen for everything you do. Ah yeah,
all right. We have to mentionthat we have the community Ho Ho
Parade and it starts today but itends at Nunias Park, so it's already
started, but it ends at Nunia'sPark at eight o'clock. So if you
guys want to go over there andend there you can go over to Nunia's
(20:26):
Park, but there also will bethe whole parade December fifth, sixth,
and seventh. You can go onCommunity Ho Ho Parade Facebook page and they
have all the routes and they actuallygo live feed, so you can follow
them right where they're going right there. So here here's the next one.
(20:48):
December fifth, Route five will beat Western Regional Little League and it will
go to Wildwood On Wednesday, Decembersixth, it's Route six. It will
go from Blair Park to Court StreetSquare. And on Thursday, December seventh,
will go from Christian Church of sB to Paris Hill Senior Center of
the y m c A. Anduh, that is always a fun one
too. That's one of my favoriteto go to. And then we'll go
(21:11):
over there and see another former Samberstand Out of the Week, Doug Wheeler,
but you won't really see him,he'll just be there. Yeah,
it is incredible. And miss Clauseshe's amazing as well. Yes she is
Joe very very nicely, the significantother of the third word Council in one
(21:36):
figure. Yes, she's wonderful. She is all right, uh and she
she they always do the Turkey trotand stuff like that they participated participate.
Yeah, we need to get youto the metal man. I saw her
today. I actually December tenth,Christmas in the Hood. I have to
(21:56):
mention this because next week press StreamFamily Street Food will be in here to
discuss their event that happens next Sunday, which is December tenth, Christmas in
the Hood from twelve to six pmat the Fraternal Order of Eagles eight nine
to five East ninth Street. TheFamily Street Food is Henry and his wife
are some good people that just starteddoing things on their own right and then
(22:21):
more people come, more people come, and then they join forces with others
and you know, that's how Samondinogrows these huge events collaboration. And I
appreciate that. I don't get togo to all their things, and I
want to, but I just don'tget to. But I do appreciate what
they do. I'm sorry I couldn'tget them in squeeze them on this one
for their event on Sunday, butI'll, you know, bring them in
(22:41):
to talk about what happened at theirevent, so that will be good too.
And we do appreciate anything that helpsSam Menandino especially in the hood right
and then left but not least Decemberninth, at ten am the forty sixth
annual Ovins Christmas Parade. So tellus what's going on already? Oh my
(23:07):
god, we have an amazing lineupof dignitaries. Just to name a few,
we have James Ramos, Joe BaccaJunior and Mary Helen Tran There,
Sam Berdandino Police Chief Darren Goodman, representatives of the council as well, Councilman
(23:30):
Damon Alexander, Sandri Bara Kimberly Calvin. And we have Felicia Alexander joining us
from the Sambordandina Unified School District Boardof Supervisors. Are you making them walk?
They will vehicles? All right?Yeah? Well, I was just
(23:52):
thinking, since they get paid togo to these things, maybe they should
walk and we should ride. Letme think on that all right, next
time, we do need to getRobert Porter in a car in yes,
but it's it's because I marched withthe Native Sons of the Golden West,
but the inland for our prospector andthey will be there ray too, and
(24:15):
they will be at the jubilee alsomining for gold with kids so I will
be hopefully i'll p'll be right nextto each other walking man. But it
is a lot of fun. Team. I always get shoutouts for those and
for for you know, just lovein general for the holidays. So please
show up. So we're really excitedto have the parade. Like as Robert
(24:37):
said, it's our forty six annualparade, and kickoff time is ten o'clock
and the route will begin at Highlandand Valencia and go east on Highland Avenue
down to the I still call itthe sixty six ers baseball field, but
it's what is it? Is ita count state baseball? The big basic
(25:00):
sports are Yeah. So the paradewill end there, okay. And then
immediately following the parade spirit that's it. Immediately after the parade, back at
the YMCA at eight o eight Easttwenty first Street, we will have a
jubilee. We'll have pictures with Santa, entertainment from the local elementary schools,
and arts and crafts and just allkinds of family oriented activities going on.
(25:25):
Fun things in gold Banding. Yeah, and then the miners will be there.
The gold Banding they set up thishuge display and they let the kids
pan for goal out and it's reallyexciting. It's it's actually a cheap way
to have fun with the kids.Really it is affordable. Yeah, ad
fun. It is totally free forthe kids. But I think they you
(25:48):
know, like I'll go out andcollect jasper and or I'll give them what
fossils that I have and then wegive out fossils and rocks for donations.
Beautiful, and then that was intothe treasures that they find when they actually
do so there's facal but also withinthe painter there's real gold. So you
(26:10):
find the fake gold first and thenthen you tell it's fatal and they get
so excited. Sometimes they're like theydon't want fake gold. When you go
a little lower and you show themthe real gold and then you show then
they're like, that's real gold,and then it's the gold. They'll be
(26:30):
taking all the black anything that's likeblack sand is really important when it comes
to finding a gold, so wealways tell them to look for that,
and you know, then they wantto keep the black sand. Yeah,
it sounds like it's going to bea great place for me to be selling
some shovels there. I love yourbusiness, but shove, I mean the
(26:56):
merchants are what got rich, That'swhat I heard. Yeah, yeah,
so we're excited, Robert, thankyou to be a great event. Yes,
it'll be. And this is howmany events for you? How long?
You know this is my second parade? Yeah so, but it's but
you just retired with the salon, you know city, right, Yes,
I was with the City of SanBernardino for about thirty three years, so
(27:18):
she was working hard on all theother events. Right. It was fun.
You know, these kind of thingsare very near and dear to me,
and you have to have you haveto enjoy what you're doing, and
doing these kind of community events isvery I enjoy it a lot, and
I like to see all the kidsand their smiles and there they just get
so excited, and that's what wewant to see. We want to see
(27:38):
excitement back in our youth. Well, thank you. Thank you for your
service to the city and also thankyou now for the service that you're doing
park community than you would you liketo. I used to work with let
the YMCA and and I'm with her. My passion is youth. I'm a
retired educator for the district. Itaught physical education for almost thirty years.
(27:59):
Elementary and my passion is kids.Oh yeah, hell hey l one two
three nights. Yeah, aw bravesover here. He was at the Golden
(28:26):
Valley Knights. Yeah yeah, yeah, fifteens. I love my job and
I retired about six years ago.It was just time, you know,
you just know, you get upand you know. I still love the
passion of children. And I amaffiliated with the l sam Mario Elslatch and
(28:52):
I also just so that you know, I have youth that I work with
that are a part of my group, which is the Antlers Organization, and
we do a lot of service forthe city of Samardino. Thank you,
yeah, thank you. I wantI wanted the brown ones, but that's
okay. So my passion with thisis that we're trying. I have the
same passion that you do. Iconsider these students little baby like little seeds.
(29:15):
I'm planning seeds of wholesomeness. I'mtrying to goodness, carrying love and
passion within our city. That's Iwas born and raised in Samarandino and I
plan on dying in Samarnandino. Ihave no desire to go anywhere else.
It's just it's just maybe maybe eventwenty who knows, but no, I
pat on staying. But I'm I'mI want to I want to try to
(29:40):
make the difference. And what we'redoing right now is we are working.
I'm taking these off because they're falling. I'm working with the Samardino City Unified
School District awesome at list program. They deal with all the homeless kids that
are identified right now, at thistime, we have about four thousand students
that are identified homeless, which consistsin school district. Yes, and that
(30:00):
slow compared to two years ago, which was almost seven Well, that's actually
good. So it is, anda lot of it has gone to they've
moved out of state, a lotof people have moved and left the district.
But just so that you know, the homeless students are consisting of children
that are in cars, multifamilies andone dwelling home, garages, parks,
tents, pretty much all of thatand just out there, just nowhere,
(30:23):
isn't there a state program to stipeenthese students. I'm going to be totally
honest with you, I am notquite familiar with that. What I do
know is what's going on in theschool district. I'm hoping that maybe they
look into it because I did seesomething where there was a thousand dollars stipen
that they were working with the studentsthat own, you know, homeless students.
(30:45):
So what let's just say my ourkids do in the organization from the
Elks Lodge is we I'm the coordinator. I've been doing this for about eight
years now and so we are it'sgrown. My goal is to try to
reach three hundred kids right now,it's only about one hundred, maybe hundred
and twenty two right So just sothat you know, are the kids that
(31:06):
my youth group. We have officers, we have by laws, we have
we follow all protocol they they workactually are learning how to do serving and
being in the kitchen to raise chipmoney to be able to provide the gifts
for the kids that comes from theschool district. So we just received a
grant from the Elks organization for twentyfive hundred dollars which was going to cover
(31:29):
our food. Yeah yeah, ourfood, our entertainment which is going to
be a face painter, a balloonartist, music, our music is going
to be donated. It's going tobe a DJ. We have not had
that yet, so I'm super excited. So yeah, yeah, absolutely,
I have give you that invitation.Matter of fact, there has to be
(31:49):
a club that you're going to.Yeah, but it's something right by Gleany.
But basically there before an event. And so so we're we're promoting.
We're promoting anybody who's interested in donatinganything. We're looking for gift cards,
we're looking for health and hygiene typeof things. I just had a young
man. I'm going to put himout there. This is Eddie or Daz
(32:13):
from he works for the dentist office. We're just getting one hundred bags with
all kinds of dental things. Thankyou, thank you, Eddie. Yep.
And so we're trying to make adifference in the city with the homeless
kids because we want them to knowthat there is hope and people do care.
And the best thing about this isthat the youth is probably a lot
of the same ages of who weserve, and I want them to know
that it's not adults doing this. It's student to student, and that to
(32:37):
me is crucial, especially being ineducation for as long as I was.
And I heard a little elf comedown before I walked into the studio,
he said. Robert Porter and motivationalor realizations. We're going to do a
fifty dollars donation to help out,oh for sure, active in the community,
(32:58):
just like ye were innovational realizations.Where can people send the donations?
So the donations you can either youcan call the the Elk's office. It's
nine O nine eight eight two tozero nine zero, or you can call
me. My number is nine ornine eight zero zero zero nine nine eight.
(33:20):
Or if you want to make acheck out to our cause, make
sure in the footnote that you putdown Antler Christmas, even though we do
things throughout the entire year, andthe address is three zero eight three six
best Post office box, Sam Redinonine two four one three. We are
willing to take pretty much anything. We just I got to give a big
shout out though to Arrowhead, UnitedWay. They just gave us a bunch
(33:45):
of shoes which our kids usually askfor jackets, shoes, socks, Thank
you very much. So and Tanya, Tanya roads Hensley, Oh yeah,
yep, she's the one. She'sgonna hooked me up. Yeah. I
love props for that one. Andso any anything you can do. I
(34:06):
even need volunteers to come and helpout if you're interested. In coming to
help out December twentieth, give mea call. There's plenty of work to
be done there. We have alot of question I put them on put
the other host. We support guys, good job, give us help us.
You're helping a segment of SAO thathe did that. Yeah, yep,
(34:32):
man, Yeah, I'm serious likeit like that. I couldn't even
imagine how hard it would have beento go to school. Yeah, yeah,
you know. And I'm really quietright now because I'm actually taking a
lot in And this is the partthat I'm hearing these great suggestions, and
I hear that everyone here is connected. Can you imagine if we just did
(34:55):
like a caravan to different high schoolauditoriums, inviting the parents and having guest
speakers as business owners natives from SanBernardino saying you know how they were able
to achieve success and still stay inyou know, in the area. So
that would be you know. Imean, so there is things called career
(35:21):
days, and I abate in allof those. I can't, but like
what you're doing is a little morespecific, right, And I've spoken,
so I have like three different presentationsfor elementary school and junior high schools and
career days. I mean that iswhat actually inspired me when I was a
kid, when I you know, when I went to SBHS Cardinals for Life,
(35:45):
you know, I was I rememberwhere, but I remember during the
auditorium a guest speaker and the guylike literally showed up in like Ben Davis.
He was all, you know, just big clothes, big old essay
(36:07):
looking dude, right, And Ijust remember him like, you know,
like taking his shirt off and youknow, unbuckling his pants because he was
actually wearing a business outfit under itwas I mean, the more of a
story. Just because you start heredoesn't mean you end here. Yeah,
that is what you know, I'minto. So I'm sure that we could,
(36:30):
uh, I mean, we gotthe right connects. That's a good
something might be able to do inWard five in the near future. I
love it. I'm a cowgirl.I went to cahone, so it's okay
exactly, but no, I loveit. And thank you guys. This
is what we need. This iswhat community looks like, coming together,
(36:52):
the collaboration. One thing that Ifind that's kind of tragic in our city
is the silence. We need moreunity in our community. That's what going
to help us really realize true progress. What do you mean what do you
mean by sidelos? So a lotof say like different groups, you know,
yeah, yeah, like bringing everyonetogether, which is exactly it was
(37:16):
the main goal of I Love Samardinoinitially was to say stop hating Samaronardino,
right because because you know, therewas there was a page called h you
know you're from sam Bernardino if yeah, Garret Vasserfield or whatever ran that thing,
and he just let people just tearSamordino bart and I'll tell you that
(37:38):
your face, dude, and hecomes on I Love Sarmordino and he steals
his negative, right. But Iquit that page because he was negative.
Right. Well, you know, someone came to me and said, you
just started you paid new group. That's why I called Ale s Emordino,
stop that and hate and everything. What I realized after that it was a
(37:59):
brief people together and they just startedcoming together. And then I realized,
Wow, this is not just AaronAnd you know, we got people from
Ralto and Colton County, Highland, even Redlands joying the group, and I'm
like, this is a bigger thing. Why is there three thousand people from
Victorville. What's going on here?Well, it's because we're all connected here.
(38:20):
People that moved to Victorville may havebeen born here vice versa, right,
and we kind of move around together, so we should be a team.
It's just we got this huge mountainrange right well, And honestly,
Robert, that's the reason why I'mthinking what I'm thinking, because if we
are sitting down with YMCA and thealex Watch, and keep in mind,
if we put our resources together,it wouldn't be twenty five hundred, it
(38:45):
would be twenty thousand. And youknow how service with that kind of money?
Can you? I mean, weare and I'm sorry to me to
put you off, but right now, because we started off, when we
started this eight years ago, wehad twenty five thirty dollars, sure,
because it was the economy was great. Now we've gotten sixty five dollars because
everything's so pricey. But can youimagine how many kids we could service with
(39:08):
that? Right? And that's whyI mean, like I said, I'm
going on on a ramp right now. But if we had you know,
the different zones right ward four orfive, each one of them has a
school, each one of them hasan auditorium, and if we just said,
hey, for this week, we'reall gonna meet here and we basically
unite. By the way, mylast name's Jesse, Morphin Mighty, Morphin
(39:31):
Power Rangers. It's about time welike morph into something together. There you
see, instead of all of usdoing stuff separately, we want to be
the white Ranger. You got it. You'd be surprised, guys, You're
(39:52):
welcome to have some cookies. You'dbe surprised how many people still have so
much faith in our city. Absolutely, I mean, I you know,
on the campaign show, obviously,I'm meeting so many different people. So
so before we get into please introduceyourself from the beginning. Explain the ward
you're running for. Who's your opponent? Absolutely so, I'm Kim Canos.
(40:12):
I've lived in the city of Samonidino, specifically Ward five. My family moved
here in nineteen eighty four. Ihate giving that year because it gives my
age away. But I've been inthe city quite Hey, there we go
twenty one. I like that oneyear. Yeah, I'll take it girl,
(40:34):
Yes, thank you. But yeah, so I've been in the city
a very long time. My familycame here because of the base. My
dad was a captain in the AirForce, so it was a base that
brought us here, and my familyloved Samonnandino and stayed. Now as an
adult, me and my husband owna home here. We're raising our two
kids here, and I've decided tostay, and I tell everyone it is
a choice. We all have achoice. We choose to stay in sam
(40:57):
Merenandino because I love this city.I have such deep, strong community ties
here. My friends that I've hadsince I was two years old still live
up the street from me. Soit's not just like they're not friends,
they're family, and so that's whatkeeps me here. I know we have
some things that we have to contendwith. You know, we have to
admit Samonnardino does have its challenges, but we do have so many opportunities.
(41:20):
And I think what really keeps meand motivates me from all the crazy,
because I think you have to bea little crazy to do the things that
we do, to really get involvedit is. It definitely is crazy.
Yes, you know, I don'tmind you. I like it. You
know, you have to be atleast like Robert just gave jesse me a
(41:46):
cracker and now. But yeah,I know you have to have that crazy
passion to do the things that wedo because it is all volunteerism, it
really is. You know. Istarted the Vertemont Revitalization project, and that
was me just responding to what yousaid, the negativity. I'd get on
(42:06):
the next door app and all Iwould hear was just negativity. Yeah,
unless we're talking about me. SoI just wanted to be more solution focused.
I didn't want to just focus onproblems. So I got the neighbors
together and we called up the cityand I have to say, our city's
been wonderful. You know, I'vehad really good experiences. I called up
(42:29):
our parks and wreck Matt Douglass, who's still with the city. This was
a few years ago, and Isaid, how come we don't have movie
nights in the park over in theVernemont area, And he's like, well,
we did, but you guys didn'tcome to them. You know we'd
have them, they'd be empty. So I begged them. I said,
please, if you guys can bringit back, I will get the people
there. I'll take accountability. Andwe literally made flyers and hit doors,
(42:52):
I mean huntrets. We were inparks passing out flyers, and that first
movie night in the park we hadover one hundred people. Wow, we
had for you trucks. We broughtin the local business community. Oh goodness,
that's a good question. I'm suregood. They always had some great
ones. Yeah, but we broughtin the local business community because again it's
(43:13):
community, and our businesses are partof the community. So I wanted to
make sure that we integrate them aswell. So we got swag bags and
put like they made special cub bondsjust for this. Yeah, it was
so fun. It was so fun. The community loved it. And then
the next one we had over threehundred people were in our local park.
There were so many people they couldn'thear the movie. So the city had
(43:34):
to invest in bigger equipment. That'sjust how big it was. Good job.
Yeah, I like to do that. I know. I love it
because just we were talking about justit brings the community together. One thing
that just was a goal when westarted was we wanted to have that sense
of community. Again. I grewup. We did life with our neighbors,
We had dinner with our neighbors. We were in and out of neighbors,
(43:55):
exactly, but I saw the thatchange, and I know it's like
with social media technology. You know, times have changed. But we got
broken into when we bought our houseliterally within the first month, and it
sucked because of all the things. You know, I'm not a materialistic person.
I didn't have anything really of value, so they didn't get anything.
(44:15):
But there's a really old laptop, but it had all the photos of my
mom who I lost to cancer. So it hurt so bad, and that,
really, I'm going to be honest, was kind of the precursor to
me getting involved. I started aneighborhood watch because I as we knocked on
doors to ask, hey, didyou see anything any cars? Not only
(44:35):
did anyone not see anything, noone knew each other. Yeah. Literally,
they lived right across from the streetfrom each other. They didn't know
each other. That's pretty sad.Yeah. So it's just again, times
have really changed to where the communityjust isn't the same. Neighborhoods don't do
life with each other anymore. Soa lot of times it sounds like I've
two of my neighbors I've known mywhole life. But the rest there was
(45:00):
like what they call a flight ofpeople. Out of our neighborhood. But
we don't do that anymore. Whereyou welcome, you greet your neighbor,
bring avocado. Let me tell youon your list with avocados neighbor. I
love, but we need more ofthat, you know. I do try
(45:23):
to encourage that online to take atime today. Give something to your neighbor.
Go meet him, shat their hand, give him a potted plant with
your phone number on it. Wewere happy to take it into the community.
So that's what Movie Nights in theParks did for us. And I'm
happy talking about the love of SamRenandino. There's a business owner. Unfortunately
(45:44):
he left the city because of justall the issues he was having with his
He was a longtime business owner. That's understandable. I know, I totally
want it. I do he Iwas able to secure from him forty thousand
dollars for our community. I've ledthe charge to save the Verdam Community Center.
That was our next goal. Weour previous sm well a couple of
(46:04):
ms ago. Because we keep changinghands, wanted to tear down the Vertemont
Community Center and not replace it.And we were like, that's ridiculous.
You know, we already are workingwith the community center that was like half
done basically, and now you're notgoing to give us anything. You know,
that's another place making event, that'sa place for senior citizens to come,
that's a place for our youth. So we fought for that and we
(46:27):
were successful. We didn't get exactlywhat we wanted. We're still fighting for
an actual brick and mortar, butit was something absolutely yeah, absolutely,
yeah, yeah. A lot ofactivities that came out of that. There
is you know, the first summerthat it opened that she unfortunately left our
city, but Erica Rodriguez, shewas amazing and so she was a program
(46:51):
coordinator there and I remember her callingme and she said, Kim, I
had to close the summer camp registration. And I'm like, jeez, like
what happened now? She said,no, no, no, the response
was so overwhelming. I can't accommodateall the kids that want to sign up.
I had to close it. Andwe both were in tears. That's
why I fought for that community center. That's the reason why it was utilized.
(47:14):
No, not at all. Sometimesthe money and we know our city,
well, we know our city.We had the longest bankruptcy in US
history, so we know we're comingoff of a financial you know situation,
largest square miles cities. So againwe recognize our challenges, but that's where
(47:37):
we come in as a community.I think that oftentimes we point fingers a
lot, but we all have arole to play here in the city.
All of us do what is yourvision for the ward that you're running for.
So I would really like to leveragethe the asset that we have.
We have cow State Sam Renardino University. Yes, I attended cow State and
(47:59):
my family abriage in a last fromBirmingham, Alabama. So we're all about
roll tide. You know, I'venever felt like I lived in a college
town, and again I grew upthere. It's a commuter school that I
was just on the campus the otherday and I didn't want to be like
a weirdo, but you know,I was stopping random people that had on
their gowns and I just asked them, you know, you're graduating, you
(48:20):
know, do you live in thecity and would you consider living in the
city. Every single one of themsaid no. That broke my heart.
We're not doing enough to keep ourcollege educated grads here in the city.
We're not also doing enough to actuallygive them work opportunities here. It's a
constant. I mean I've been itmust have been at least eight years.
I'd say, why is there notinterns directly coming every single year from cal
(48:45):
State for a class in our city. There's so much. I mean even
they actually got that. I wasalso arguing for high school student ambassadors for
a long time. That will neverget mentioned either, But guess what we
got. Finally we did. FinallyI did, So everyone else will take
credit. That's fine, But like, these are the things that we need.
(49:06):
We need to involve our high schools, our colleges. You know,
Valley College needs a team there too, But we need synergy here. Again,
we have so many I'm just goingto throw it on you. But
that's where our council members need tostep up and kind of guide these kind
of projects, right because of thestaff. They're overworked as it is.
We are short staff. We've beenshort stuff. You are a city employees.
(49:30):
You know firsthand that unfortunately after thebankruptcy we were cut to the moat.
We did and slay some bone off. How how can people support your
campaign efforts? So I do havea website it's vote Kimcanas dot com.
So please visit the site. Youcan see more about my platform, what
I stand on, what's really youknow, and it's not just about me.
(49:52):
I want to know that. Withmy involvement in the community, as
you guys know, I've been involvedfor a long time. I also helped
create sb Food, our downtown foodfestival. I'm also a board member on
We Are the Change Sammony Dino.So we've done cleanups all over the city.
Yes, I mean tons and tonsof trash. I've been cleaned up
with Elisa Luis o'heada's big orange truck. SoSE yes, I'm sorry brother week
(50:20):
the Rose Apple. Eventually TI spoton Hospitality Lane, I need to go
visit it, the spot on Hospitalityand the tie spot go visit it.
So yeah, I mean just beinginvolved, you hear the perspectives, the
opinions, and I think we haveto realize it's not all about us the
issues that we have, but alsothe opportunities that we have. They're bigger
than us, and that's where wejust really need to come together with sam
(50:44):
Dino needs is a collective vision. We have too much of the eye.
You know, people come in withtheir agenda's what I want to do.
Of course, I have my youknow thoughts. I have a brain that
keeps going. It keeps me up. But don't let them. There are
visionaries, right, Yes, youhave to embrace them, and if you
(51:06):
want them on your team. It'snot always easy, and it's not it
doesn't always work out great, Sosometimes it is good to have a few.
I consider myself correction, right,But like I've tried to integrate teams
a few times and had it blowup in my face and made it my
(51:28):
fault. Right, So if they'rewilling to do it, you know,
and we can do good bringing peopletogether. But sometimes it's good to have
those we know, because you're stilldoing stuff. What is it? The
pathway to hell is good. Ijust see it like this that like outful
(51:49):
people don't always get along. Well, it depends. I consider I have
a pretty strong personality, so Iown that. But nobody here has a
strong person We all got to planuntil you get punched in the you know,
And I think that's the thing beinginvolved in community. I've been punched
(52:12):
in the face quite a bit withwords. I mean, I've even had
someone slam the door on my babyand a stroller. I mean the things
that I've had to put up withjust trying to help my community. Yeah,
so I mean, for me,what a baby warrior show to the
to the children warriors of our town. I can't have a question. Who
(52:35):
is running against you? So theso I the income and of course Ben
Reno. So also our former councilperson Chess Kelly, he's running again.
And then I think there are twoother people that have thrown in their hat.
So the closing period is the eighththis Friday. Yes, do you
feel like mister Kelly is? Ithink everyone's a viable candidate. We all
(53:04):
have our reasons and so I meanI don't discount any Well, the reason
I asked is he's getting back intoit. But you know, he did
his he did his time for whathe did wrong. Yeah, that's understandable.
We make mistakes, absolutely, butlike this, like I haven't seen
him involved a little bit with theVerdemont Community Center the only time I ever
(53:24):
saw him involved. Yeah, soto come back into the game makes me
think that you're a plan. Idon't know for sure, right, So
I can't answer that and tell meyou're not too please do, sir.
I can't answer that, and I'mnot here to disparage anyone. I think
you know that in our politicans,oh probably you know. And I don't
(53:49):
know who. I don't know everysingle one, but I've alreat counted a
few. Now, I just haveto focus on your campaign and just keep
punching through. I am like I'vebeen on the scene for a while.
I'm not here about talk show.Oh that's a good one, so yes,
and I've been asked that a lot. So first and foremost, I
took the time to research because Ihad no idea what on site crushing was.
(54:09):
I'm not in construction. I willbe the first to tell you I
know what I don't know. Iwill never claim to be a no at
all. So the first step Idid was contact aqm D. I talked
to quite a few representatives, spentover an hour on the phone with one
of them. I also got thetoxicology report because there's a lot of information
floating around and unfortunately, well unfortunatelyit's opinions. There's a lot. You
(54:32):
can just go on the next doorapp, you can go on Facebook and
there's and it's like, you know, my uncle's cousin said it's toxic,
you know, so I had toverify for myself. So I actually have
the toxicology report that says it's nottoxic. However, I have that my
community doesn't. My community wasn't giventhe same opportunity. They didn't stay on
(54:55):
the phone with AQMD for an hour. That's just a personal converse station that
I had. So with the previousinterim CM, I had requested that we
actually have a meeting with the actuallike necessary parties involved, like A,
Q and D, so that wecan actually all have the same information so
that we can make an informed decision, because that's what's needed. This is
(55:17):
a thing though, okay, I'llbe quick. It should have never been
brought there. The fact that thatrubble was brought up Palm Avenue as a
travesty. And what it's a factnow is we have to choose the best
of the worst. There's no greatoutcome to me, I can't say that's
(55:39):
obvious, but either way, ifwe if we remove it, it's probably
more now because keep in mind thatwas two years ago, so inflation,
so it's probably more. I ama former construction worker and I have worked
with grinding especially with narchaeological sense, with stuff that has that's just anything you're
(56:00):
can imagine in it, and theystill mitigated it perfectly. Yeah, and
that's what either aqm D did tellme. There's medication mitigation that does take
place with the on site crushing. They actually certify the onsite crushing machines,
so those machines are actually permitted byaqm D. So it is a regulated
(56:21):
process. So I learned a lot, but I would like for my community
to be able to learn that too, exactly. So I, as you
know, if I do win,I don't want to come in as an
elected and just you know, bea dictator and say this is what I
want to do. You know,I live right there. I am literally
there, my kids, both mykids go to school right there. So
it does impact me. But asit impacts me, it impacts my neighbors
(56:43):
too. Yep. So, andit really impacts the nature around there too,
because the dust is flying off,it's not put back into the realm
where it belongs. So we're goingto have to do something here. Team.
Uh, this is a definite pointof contention between you and the current
council member. He really wants thatmoved from you, and that's fine,
(57:05):
but it's not an I thing. It can't be what I want or whatever.
Be the votes, well, itcan't be an eye and it can't
be what just a few people inthe community in the council. Yeah,
not even in the community, becauseas I go around and I'm talking,
I hear a lot of people differentopinions. So we do need to come
to a consensus as a community. It cannot be an EE thing. So
how would you just go do anothertest, double up on them, test
(57:30):
thirty different spots, make sure it'snot exactly, and then we'll be you
know, we'll feel more comfortable aboutthat report that you have that we don't
feel comfortable with. Yeah, andactually I didn't know about that report.
I think a lot of people do. But the meeting for these things they
explained all this too, so Ikind of got it, but some people
(57:50):
weren't believing the So that's it.That's where the one point of contention is
for you. So if they canmake a report as well analysis better,
well, and that's something that Ithink should have been done because again it's
been there for two years. Howcome we didn't have the city commissioner,
reporters, it's been years. Thatis an awesome answer. Thank you so
much, and I want to thankyou for carrying so much. Yes,
(58:14):
you've done a lot more things thanI've heard, so great job that extra
step to actually do the research onit to find out what exactly it is
and how it is affecting your communityto talk about remember, volunteer, volunteer,
I don't know that I'm crazy.All right, We're getting closer.
(58:38):
Brother. I want to thank youall for showing up. Make sure everyone
goes to the Christmas parade on Saturday, their team and we have the city
meeting this Wednesday at five o'clock thistime, teams will be there at five
o'clock. Right, this is myreporter with the I Love Saronio County Radio
show, and we are at now. I'm the man who loads the blues.
(59:20):
Hey, you're not. I'm livein the blues, load the musing.
Deep, that's all. I'm walkingthe talking, live in the blues.
I'm a blues loading made from mysoul into your head. Muse it
