Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome moms. Welcome to Inside the Mom's Cup.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
I'm your host, Monica Samuels, and I'm here with my
lovely co host, Julie Orchid.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Well, hello, Julie.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
I mean, it's been a few months.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Missed you.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
I've missed you too, and I know you missed me,
especially when we arrived here in La I made the
wise decision this time of putting Julie as an official
driver on my rental car.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Very wise move.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
But I'm still required to drive it out of the lot.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
So I drove us to the hotel, which was was terrifying.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
They thought I had.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Like scotten onto the Universal Studios amusement parks right or something.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
I mean, note, we're only two miles in the airport.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
I know it was I even I think it was
harrowing myself. But she's not a great navigator because see
she told me to make a right hand turn and
there was no right hand turn right, so I turned
into almost hit a building at Warner Brothers Studios.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
So you basically are fired from any type of you know, driving,
not much of a driver.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah, not happening, but I did.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
It's the hotel and in that hair that like crazy
hairprint turn I made at the last minute. I got
in there.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, you overshot that turn and we were also.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
And I still made it.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
We did, and so we made it.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
So here we are. But now Juli, he's behind the wheel.
So that's all good.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
And we're so excited to be here because we love
being in Los Angeles because.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
It's super special, like we learn a lot, we get
to see a lot, and the.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Movies, the movie I am a huge movie nerd, as
you know.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
I love, especially love really old movies. Yeah, I'm well, I.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Would say it, just say it, just say who you love.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
My favorite actress is Olivia to have aland look it
up for those moms.

Speaker 5 (01:46):
Who were I to do that?

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, but she went to Academy Awards and so I
love all of that. I just love I love writing,
I love acting, I love well.

Speaker 4 (01:57):
I love being here because my daughter moved here few
months ago and I get to see her a lot
more and support her and her exciting adventures.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, she wants to be an actress. Yeah, And I
just wrote a script with with the woman I wrote
the book with, so I was working on that.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Oh, so very excited.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
You've always had to be an actress. Right, yeah, well, yeah,
I've had that.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
I mean it was pretty good at that, you know.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
But but I like writing especially, so years ago I
started a screenplay and I called my cousin who started
the New Hope Film Festival in New Hope, Pennsylvania. And
you know what, big rule followers, we are at our house.
My whole family, like runs in the family. So I
called him for advice and he gave me the advice
and then he said, you know, Monica, I have to

(02:44):
tell you, though, there are strict rules about the entry
into the contest for screenwriting for my film festival. So
I cannot give you, if that's what you're asking for,
some kind of upper hand. And like, no, I wasn't.
I didn't even written a word yet, so I was
hardly asking for that. But I do appreciate by his
experience how tough it is.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
He said that film festival.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Has been going for fifteen years, and people from all
over New York City come.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
Well, this is what I have about these upcoming film
writers stars, is that it's extremely difficult and to put
yourself out there and to do it is really brave.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
It's amazing. As we said here on the mom's.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Caub which is why we are.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
So excited today that we have the other daughter duo
that someday, America, you're going to be saying in the
same breath after you've mentioned Goldie Han and Kate Hudson,
their names are going to come to mind because they
are tremendous and they have founded a film festival. Well,
we're from Austin, Texas, so it's near our hometown and

(03:45):
it's a beautiful place called Roundtop, Texas. If you've never
heard of it, you definitely know it for years. Go
see it because it is incredible, and they have a
new film festival there.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
They started it last year, the.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Roundtop Film Festival. So we want to welcome Shanna, the
mom who is the co founder, has a lifelong connection
to round Top, originally hailing from Lagrange nearby, and she
started it with a commitment of philanthropic and artistic endeavors
which inspired her to start the film festivalong with her
daughter Skyler Nice, who is a screenwriter and filmmaker with

(04:20):
credits for short films called Angel and Pretty Boy, and
she's got an upcoming short called Call of the Void,
and together they have a desire to expand the cultural
offerings within the exciting Roundtop community. Please welcome to the
Mom's Club, Shanna and Skuyler Shannon, Please welcome, ladies.

Speaker 6 (04:40):
Hi. Hey, I'm so happy to be here. Thank you
for having us.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Hi, how are you today?

Speaker 5 (04:49):
Great? Happy to be here.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
I'm so happy that you're here. We are so excited because,
as I mentioned, Julie and I know round Top really
really well, have been there so many times. We make
it a point to go twice a year. They have
their antique, their market festival there that interior designers from
all over the world.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
I mean, it's an event.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
Well, I'm sorry I don't have my boots on today
and my hat because I couldn't carry it.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
All, but I would be. But I am.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Super thrilled because we actually have been I've been going
for I do mean twenty two years, so I first
started taking the baby buggy and going in and it's
so it's really special because we're from Austin, Texas, so
we are thrilled to talk about today at a festival.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
I've loved how round Top has grown and developed and
it's really just more recently really gotten on the map
in so many ways. And what I specially love about
the community is when you arrived there.

Speaker 6 (05:49):
They're just certain.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
You just sort of adopt the.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Culture of the place and suddenly, like Julie's saying, you've
got your fancy boots. I went to Chemo Sabby and
got my hat made. I mean, now I feel like
every time I driving to a round top, I gotta
get a new fancy.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Some of the nice cowboy hat. You wear, cool dresses.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
The women are gorgeous and they're dressed really great, and
I mean, it's a it's an incredible community. If you
haven't been there now, I will give you a little
heads up for those who want to go to the
antique festival in the market. It's popular and so you
got to make your plans well in advance to sure.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
I mean, it's well off the chain. What you have
to do to get into that place, it can be.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
And you know what, with this film festival, the way
it's gonna take off, I'm absolutely positive it's gonna be
the same thing. This year's festival is November sixth to
the ninth, so you're you're gonna hear more about it
is the show goes on. But I know you're gonna
want to go because it is going to be.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Very very popular pretty soon.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
You're gonna have well, it's have a hard time getting in.
How just Shanna, how do you sign up to to attend?
What where do people find the link? And how do
they because that's that's right around on the corner.

Speaker 6 (07:01):
Yeah it is. We are in it too and win it.
We are in the thick of it. So we just
pulled off our last one last year and we're in
our second year. So this is the second year festival.
It's going to be November sixth through the ninth. As
you said, you can go on www Dot round top
dot org to purchase your passes and right now we're

(07:25):
still an early bird special, so you can get your
passes at a little bit of a discount rate and
that will be going up soon, so love you to
purchase them early and have a little break in the price. Okay, great,
we're super excited about it.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Well, tell us how it all started?

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Where did where did the idea come from? And how
did you get it going? Because like I said, I
have a relative who did this, and I know it's
not easy to get one going.

Speaker 6 (07:51):
Right, So Fata and I really just had an idea,
and I really wanted to get something back to the community.
We were trying to think, how can we add to
this already beautiful cultural town, what can we bring to it?
And it seemed a natural fit with Skylar's passion for film,

(08:13):
her involvement, and you know in films that she was
young from screenwriting to acting and all of the things,
and so it it just we married those two ideas
together of giving back, and that's kind of how it
came about. Skyler. Do you have anything to add to that.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
Yeah, I mean, we've been talking about wanting to do
something in Roundtop for a while, and I remember when
I was little, We're like, maybe we'll open a soda
pop shop or something fun. And then I got super
involved in film and moved around a lot and finally
moved back to Austin, And so we were talking about

(08:53):
it on the screen in fort one night just that
we were shocked that a film festival hasn't started yet
in Roundtop and we were like, oh my gosh, we
should do this. Yeah, and then it was kismet how
everybody fell together and.

Speaker 6 (09:08):
Yeah, yeah, I mean in twenty twenty four is kind
of when we kicked it off in January, and I think,
you know, maybe starting October twenty twenty three. I was
kind of tossing around the idea to the locals in town.
I'm like, what do you think if we bring a
film festival? And they were like, oh my gosh. I mean,

(09:28):
everybody was on board. It was so supportive. There weren't
those roadblocks, and doors just kept opening and opening. So
it's been such a wonderful experience. I mean, we couldn't
have been more welcomed and just the stars aligned. So
we're super happy.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
Well, I'm going to say that I have read a
lot about this film festival and I'm super excited for it.
I hope that we can get down the road to it.
But I read that it was such a success that
this year is going to be bigger and better. So
what is going to be a little bit different that
you learn from the first time that you're going to
bring to Roundtop?

Speaker 6 (10:09):
You know, you learn a lot in the first year
of planning, and I think that everything went off without
a hitch pretty much for a first year festival. So
we're going to kind of stick with the same template.
We don't want to grow too much. We want to
fill the house. We want to fill the theaters and
bring the people to town, so we're going to go

(10:31):
with that. As far as additions, though, we were going
to add a tribute ceremony which we didn't have last year,
where we honor people in the film industry, so it
be an actor, a director, screenwriter, so we'll have a
special ceremony for them, just honoring their craft. Some other
things that are exciting are the Rising Star Showcase which

(10:54):
we had last year. We're bringing that back and Skyler,
do you want to tell a little bit about what's
happening with their rising stars from last year?

Speaker 5 (11:05):
Yeah, our Rising Stars from last year was so great.
We had so many good ones. Lily Kay, Maria botha,
Sasha Lane and we all we weren't sure we knew
that Roundtop would make people want to come back, but
we got such good feedback. They all want to come
back this year, which is great. And yeah, they wanted

(11:27):
to hang out and Roundtop so that was really good feedback.

Speaker 6 (11:32):
So yeah, and they were doing new things. It's exciting.
Lily Kay is now on Stick, so it's been fun
to watch her.

Speaker 3 (11:40):
Yeah, it's always nice to see where they go and
what they do.

Speaker 6 (11:43):
Act for us and say we're super excited. But all
of those you know, little intros were so wonderful, and
we made such good connections. And I feel like in
Roundtop because it is such a unique spot. Everything was
centrally located. The networking was so good. Everybody feels comfortable

(12:06):
and you do get in the vibe of the of
the town and you know, you get into the two
stepping and the big pots and moots. So there's just
a connection and a bonding thing that happens. So super cool.

Speaker 4 (12:21):
I mean, I see that you close just recently all
the submissions for this film festival.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
I mean, what was that yesterday?

Speaker 6 (12:28):
Maybe?

Speaker 5 (12:29):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (12:30):
So you guys have quite the you know ahead of
you next few months ahead of you.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
So how does that process work?

Speaker 4 (12:36):
Where who you're going to submit or you know what
I mean, tell me a little bit about is it
a panel or how do you pick?

Speaker 6 (12:44):
So we closed film submissions yesterday and that goes through
film Freeway. We were so fortunate this year for a
second year festival to get as many submissions as we did.
We were overwhelmed and thrilled. So that was super excited
and so now we have to sort through them. All
and then we have a screenwriting kind of not screenwriting,

(13:07):
I'm sorry, a selection committee for the films, and so
they're all watching them, Mickey and Dustovitch. Our programming director
kind of you know, releases some just several different viewers
and then they give their feedback and then he curates
the program that speaks to our audience. And so last

(13:32):
year he did a phenomenal job. We got a lot
of great feedback on the films that were selected, and
so we're looking forward to see what we come up
with this year.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
No, that's great, and I imagine there's very strict protocols
and rules. Is that kind of consistent with all film festivals?
So in other words, if your cousin calls you and
says that she's got a screenplay, she's not getting treatment.

Speaker 5 (13:58):
Yeah, have to go through yeah handles.

Speaker 6 (14:03):
Yeah, we kind of sent it off. We learned our
lesson last year. We're like, oh, we have a friend
and they're like no, no, no, this isn't the way it works. Yeah,
you know, we have to take this seriously and go
through each film and curate the best program. So it's
unfortunate is there are a lot of great films and
sometimes I mean, may have twenty films, but you only

(14:25):
have slots that are excellent. Twenty excellent films, but you
only have slots for ten of them.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
Oh that's tough.

Speaker 6 (14:30):
That's the hard part.

Speaker 5 (14:33):
And we are an international film festival too, so we're
bringing films in from all around the world, which is
really exciting, and we also want to make sure to
give room to our Texas writers and creatives as well.
So it's just like finding balance between all of it
and hopefully one day we can expand to where we
can get more films.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Yeah, I know last year you featured Man.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Land you showed land Man.

Speaker 6 (14:59):
Because it was dream is to become an Academy Award
qualifying film festival. So Nicky kind of started this off
on that path because there are so many rules. Like
you said, there are rules and guidelines and how many
films of this nature you need to show and that,
and so he follows up very closely and we're thankful
to have him on board paying attention to those details.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
How does that process like, is it a length of
time sort of thing, or how do you end up?

Speaker 1 (15:27):
How are you how will you accomplish that?

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Is that going to be just by like, how does
it work whether you become Academy Award qualified. I didn't
even know about that.

Speaker 6 (15:39):
Yeah, it's a seven year process. So it used to
be a five year process and as of last year,
they changed it to a seven year process. So you
have to prove yourself for seven years and apply for it,
and I understand it's very difficult to get. So, you know,
fingers crossed that we can reach that goal and apply

(16:00):
in seven years and achieve that. That's uncle.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
I feel like you will.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
You got off to such a great start last year
and it seems like you're just moving forward this year.

Speaker 4 (16:12):
I totally but you guys the future you mentioned which
is really exciting, So people know exactly where you want
to take this and what you want to do. But
you guys are also mom and daughter, and so I
want to know having I have two daughters, and I
would like to know what is it like to work
with your daughter. You know, I want to tell my
daughter that don't worry, I'm not trying to work with you.

(16:35):
I just want to know what it's like for you
guys on a daily basis.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Share a little bit about that.

Speaker 4 (16:41):
Because we've got a bunch of moms here that have
businesses like with their daughter, and we just want to
know what is that dynamic Like, I mean, I know
it gets a little hot in my household sometimes with
my daughter. So spill the tea, is what I'm trying
to say to you.

Speaker 6 (16:56):
Yeah, you know. Fortunately we have a really good working
relationship because we bring two different pieces to the table.
I think if we were both, you know, creatives in
the same direction, we might bedheads. Yeah. For me, I'm
more of the daily in and out of the festival,

(17:19):
managing the team, you know, developing the programs, talking to
everyone on the team. And Skyler you have just been
our creative vision from day one, and you can tell
a little bit about what you do in the parts
that you play.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
Yeah, we'd love to hear that.

Speaker 5 (17:37):
Yeah, I kind of oversee because when we were coming
up with this, we were like, where, how are we going
to work together and who's gonna do what? Just so
we don't step on each other's toes. Me, I'm definitely
more creative, So my vision is just kind of I
work with the marketing team and also last year I

(17:58):
worked with Mickey kind of soleing the vibe that we
want to have in films, so I kind of oversee
more of the artistic side of things and help with
the parties and the films and just kind of the
overall vibe of it. So I'm always just trying to
curate new content and help with that and help spread

(18:20):
the word of it social media.

Speaker 6 (18:23):
Sure.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
Yeah, course, so.

Speaker 4 (18:28):
Texas friends are going to want to know what do
these parties look like?

Speaker 3 (18:32):
Skyler, you said you have a hand in. Yeah, Like, well, I.

Speaker 5 (18:38):
Can let my mom go into full detail about them.
But we always want to make them fun and make
them for all different ages. Sure, especially this year, we're
trying to bring in more twenties thirties groups and so
we're kind of balancing them out, but we always try
to add a Texas flair to them because so many
people are coming from all around the world world, we

(19:00):
want to make sure that they get to experience Texas
the way we do. And then we also do a
fun theme each year. So last year we did Deneman Diamonds,
and then this year I can say it right, well, yeah.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
So this year working together.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
She's just checking.

Speaker 4 (19:21):
Now that Taylor and Travis got engaged today, you can
say it like that's big news.

Speaker 5 (19:27):
I always talked so much. I get excited and I
don't want to know.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
I love it.

Speaker 6 (19:32):
Leak out slowly, so it's like, can we say that,
like are we ready to release them?

Speaker 2 (19:37):
That's good to work between you this year.

Speaker 6 (19:40):
And opening night party is actually going to be an opens,
which is a new venue for Around Top. Will be
the very first, very first organization that gets to have
a party at their brand new event center, and so
we're super excited about that. Like Skyler said, we do

(20:01):
like to have that Texas flare, So we're going to
have a big kickoff where you wear your big boots,
you know, your boots and your big hat, and you
bring your style. Because around is now a fashion mecca
as well. We have a fashion week in the spring
and fall of the Antique Show, and we will have

(20:23):
a fashion and film panel, so when you come know
that you know you can go all out and anything
goes in Round Top. But anyway, that opening night is
a Western and it will be straight Tequila Knights will
be playing, so there's a lot of big scoop and Bookie,
I have a lot of activations and some Texas food, so.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
I suppose Lalo will be there. Lalo the tequila will
be there.

Speaker 6 (20:52):
Yeah, you know this year, Agazul is kind of good. Yes, yes,
and Lala's last year and august Zul has asked for
an exclusive this year.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
Oh that'll be fun.

Speaker 6 (21:07):
So it's a new toe quila. It is absolutely fantastic.
So we're excited to have them. And we're gonna miss Lalla.
I still have Lala on my bar.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
They're all they're all good information, ula drinkers, e spirit.
Something new this year. And you mentioned given that Texas flair,
what's exciting for Texas is, you know, we're here in
La a lot and we hear a lot about what's
going on in the industry. And I know you're having
a panel of the uh the state of the Industry panel,
And I think one thing that's happening in the film
industry is there's more competition from other states in I

(21:41):
known Texas.

Speaker 3 (21:42):
We just passed a passing bill bill to bring more.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
Production into Texas. So to put a film festival in
Texas that's focused on Texas.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
Well, that's outside of aus.

Speaker 4 (21:54):
Austin has you know, gotten oversaturated, oversaturated a little bit downtown.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
So this is a lot, Yeah, this is tremendous. Well
do you think that the changes in the filmmaking industry
in Texas will have an impact on your film festival
at all, or how do you think that will help change.

Speaker 6 (22:13):
I've been hearing it's going to be really great for us,
So Texas is super exciting, excited about this bill. I
just went out on a group with a group on
Lake Travis recently, and it was a group of people
in the film industry and they were getting together to
see how we can all support each other. And it

(22:34):
was phenomenal because they were talking so much about this bill.
And several of the people were on this boat from
Miami from LA and they are moving here. They're like,
we cannot get here quick enough to be part of
this Texas boom. So I think it's only going to

(22:55):
help the festival.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
Yet.

Speaker 6 (22:59):
Is a destination, you know, it's some place that you're
getting home and you're going to spend the weekend. You
can drive in from Houston and Austin because it's so close.
It's an hour and fifteen minutes either way you go.
So I make that drive a lot, you and from
in one day, so it's an easy drive and it's

(23:19):
a beautiful drive. But yeah, I think that it's really
going to be wonderful.

Speaker 5 (23:26):
And I also think it makes a lot of people
I met last year that came to the film festival
from outside of Texas. They're all wanting to move here,
and Groundtop made them excited to realize that there are
cool parts of the countryside because you know, people don't
really think about Texas the country having nice restaurants and

(23:47):
stuff to do all the time. So they all want
to go out there for writers' retreats and stuff like
that because it's so accessible.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
Oh I would imagine there would. Yeah, people also real
Top great. It has some great restaurants. Some of the
boutique hotels are just fabulous. You would not You're right,
people wouldn't think that that would be in round Top. Well,
but it is, I mean, and so yeah, I can
only see this getting bigger and better.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
Yeah, I feel like you have to plan five years
out now.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
It's going to be around well, you know, well, you
know Julian.

Speaker 6 (24:22):
Place by your passes early and place to stay. There's
a lot of great hotels and there's a lot of
beautiful airbnb. Yes. Yeah, Ever, the neat thing about Roundtop
and what the antique best kind of set up for
it is that their great Airbnb is in Fayetteville, in Columbus,

(24:44):
in Gettings, in Lagrange in front of them. All of
these places are fifteen to twenty minute drive from Round Top,
so you're still very close. You know. It's like getting
in your car and going to dinner in Austin. It's
going to take you fifteen minutes to get there and
get home. So these places are all wonderful and the

(25:05):
airbnbs are phenomenal. Yeah, yeah, and really really nice job.

Speaker 4 (25:11):
So I have a question about the films where exactly?
Because I know Roundtop very well. A lot of our
listeners haven't been to round Top, So where are you
showing all these films?

Speaker 6 (25:20):
So our feature films and a lot of our documentaries
are shown at Festival Hill.

Speaker 7 (25:28):
Oh yes.

Speaker 6 (25:29):
Stable Hill is an orchestra hall by James Dick and
it is phenomenal. It looks like you're in the middle
of Europe. If you've never been, you're going to have
to go in and it's break taking. Everybody that walks
in is like, where am I? How do you hear?
What is this building doing in this small town? It's

(25:50):
all hand carved wood, gorgeous and it was we were
just honored to be able to show movies in there.
Our second, then you is the round Top Dance Hall,
and it's just a whole another vibe. It's an old
dance hall from way back, historic dance hall with you know,
the windows that pop out, and it just gives you

(26:12):
another vibes. And we share our shorts and we have
a lot of our panels there during the day, like
the State of the Industry, our Rising Star will be there, okay,
And this year we have two panels that we're going
to offer on Sunday, and you want one to miss
Sunday this year because we're having our stunt panel and

(26:33):
our Veterans panel on Sunday along with a whole block
of films, So those will be fantastic.

Speaker 3 (26:42):
Yeah, I like how you're closing.

Speaker 1 (26:43):
Yeah, that's stunt'll vegetable hill.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
I'm sorry, that's pretty cool, the stunt panel.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
I'd love to say that. Yeah, Like, were they going
to like zoom in or you know, well, this is
very cool. Well I can't wait. Well, we have.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
Some exciting moms, some moms that want to ask you
questions as well about the film festival. So let's welcome
our zoomer moms. Welcome to the Mom's Club, ladies. Okay,
I know a few of you have been our veterans
of Roundtop, so you're now excited. I'm sure that this
is going to be coming to our area. And let's

(27:21):
start with someone who has been to Roundtop quite a bit.
And I know she will be joining us because we're
going to have her come with us. Julie and I
are going to sign up right.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
After the show.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
She just doesn't know it yet.

Speaker 2 (27:30):
Jennifer, Welcome to the Mom's Club. Tell us a little
bit about yourself, where you're from, and do you have
a question for Shannon Skuyler.

Speaker 8 (27:39):
Hi, I'm so happy with you here. I'm thrilled to
hear about this expansion of Roundtop's incredible cultural, Like it
just feels like it has a gravity force field that
just draws culture to it and it's almost like it
just doesn't stop anyways.

Speaker 9 (27:59):
My name from Marsh.

Speaker 8 (28:00):
I'm from Austin, Texas, and I have two kids. I
have a daughter who's twenty four and a son who's
right down the street at ET and I am in
the design field, so trained as an architect, but I
also love to do in tier design, dat bold landscape
design a bit. And one of the things I love
about this area is that when I got here in

(28:24):
nineteen ninety eight, I kind of I sort of felt
like it was like the Frontier and people always said
that round Top was like a you know, there's flea markets,
so I never really went, and I was in Austin
from ninety eight until two thousand and one before I
finally went to round Top and I was like, this.

Speaker 9 (28:43):
Place is bananas. What is happening?

Speaker 8 (28:45):
Like I felt like I'd heard a vourtex of design amazingness.
But what you all had done with the film Festival
that is so exciting to me is highlight the fact
that it's just a really creative community.

Speaker 9 (28:58):
And it's not just one community.

Speaker 8 (28:59):
It's like a constellation of towns that are all had
this incredible synergy with one another. And so I mean,
I'm I am dying to know what the plan is
for expanding the festival. It sounds like you have some
great venues, but like all things round Top, they just
tend to get bigger and better and like warped speed.

Speaker 9 (29:22):
And that's why I love going, like do we go
fall and Spring to the festival.

Speaker 8 (29:26):
Because there's like a whole new venue that's opened up,
or a brand new incredible restaurant, or a brand new
place to stay, and it just there seems to be
just such momentum there right now, and people, as you said,
are flying in from all over the world. So what's
your like, I know you're in Roundtop right now, but like,
do you plan to expand it to the's.

Speaker 9 (29:48):
Like all of the constellation of towns.

Speaker 2 (29:50):
That lagrange your hometown. Yeah, what's what are the plans there?

Speaker 6 (29:55):
That? Absolutely that's our goal. Like I was saying earlier
this year, we kind of want to just stick to
the same template, make sure that we're full and the
house is packed and we have the growth that we
need before we expand. But there's other venues that we're
already thinking about exploring for this expansion, because you know,

(30:17):
the Antique Festival goes all the way from Mike Warrenton, Texas,
all the way to Brenham. So we have that whole
template laid out where we can definitely tap into a
lot of other venues and expand and bring a lot
of new screening places which will allow us to show
a lot.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
More films that's exciting.

Speaker 2 (30:37):
And yeah, we failed to mention too that Jennifer is
a member of the the president of the Round Top
Chamber of Commerce. If you didn't notice, that was a
good advertisement. I love listening to that because it is.
It is such a amazing Lorraine, welcome to the Mom's Club.
Where are you from? Tell us a little bit about yourself,
and do you have a question.

Speaker 10 (30:56):
I do, thank you so much for having me on today.
My name is Howard and I am from Wichita Falls, Texas,
so North Texas. I've been here for about a year
and I am a certified professional photographer. I actually photograph
other events. I've photographed two years. This will be my
third year to photograph a different film festival. So I'm

(31:18):
so excited to hear about this one and i want
to come see this one.

Speaker 6 (31:21):
This is so cool.

Speaker 5 (31:22):
So can you a come?

Speaker 10 (31:27):
But I have I'm a mom to eight children. I
have two birth children and we've done I've adopted six
out of the foster care system and I've actually had
ninety nine foster children.

Speaker 3 (31:40):
So working with your daughter is.

Speaker 10 (31:43):
So special to me. I'm just so excited to hear
about that. And my question would be.

Speaker 6 (31:52):
As a mom.

Speaker 10 (31:53):
You know, we think about the legacy that we're leaving
for our kids. And Shannon, what do you hope that
this past well inspires not just for your family with Skyler,
but for other young creatives who may dream of telling
their story someday.

Speaker 1 (32:08):
Great question, you.

Speaker 6 (32:10):
Know for me, I think being a mom was always about,
you know, finding that spark, what drives that your child.
And so Skuyler, you know, she tried soccer, she tried
all these different sports and ballet and you name it,
and she landed and she's like, okay, I'm quitting ballet.

(32:33):
Right when she was going to be Clara and the Nutcracker.
I was like, what are you doing. You can't do that. No, no, no,
I'm going into theater. I'm like, okay, here we go.
So you make the shift. But she found her true
passion and so that's meaningful to me. And I hope
that other parents can help guide and direct their children

(32:57):
into what their guy given talents on so that they
can really pursue that and it's meaningful to them. I
think that gives them a happy life. I think that
it gives them a sense of accomplishment because it's something
that they own and I just love that we're able

(33:19):
to work together. I hope that it inspires other mothers
to do the same, be it if they want to
open a clothing store or what have you. It's something
beautiful that is right, that's awesome, I hope my kids. Yeah, absolutely,
it sounds like you have a good team.

Speaker 2 (33:41):
Yes, well, Skyler as the daughter, do you have anything
to add to that?

Speaker 1 (33:48):
Skyler as her daughter?

Speaker 2 (33:49):
Do you have anything you want to add to that?
Because you're coming at that from your perspective, having your
mom care so much is to to create this and help,
you know, work together on this.

Speaker 1 (34:00):
What are your thoughts about that?

Speaker 5 (34:02):
Acting? And then I got into writing and that's where
I really just found my spark and that's what I
do every day. It's just really fun. It's you know,
I also I'm always working on screenplays and working on
novels and stuff. And so then having something that we
get to do together and get to talk on the

(34:25):
phone about it's been really exciting. And it's also been
really cool because growing up my mom she was just
my number one supporter and was just to stay at
home mom with me, taking me to all my practices
and acting auditions and stuff. And so now it's been
cool getting to see her step into this role and

(34:45):
just being like a very powerful woman.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
So yeah, that's great.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
And yeah, sometimes parents, it's great to be a supportive
parent and genuinely support what your child's really passionate about.
Interesting as opposed to some parents who voice something on.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
Their childlike or whatever it is, like me, or you're
done or what.

Speaker 2 (35:06):
Yes, all that, Arlene, welcome to the Mom's Club. Tell
us where you're from a little bit about yourself, and
do you have a question for these ladies.

Speaker 6 (35:14):
Yes, thank you for having me.

Speaker 7 (35:17):
I'm Arlene Dion and I'm from the Los Angeles area.
I am a mother to an energetic five year old daughter,
the Little Girl. I'm an entrepreneur with finance background, but
i also am the owner of a mail box and
shipping store and called Mailboxes and More in Sherman Oaks, California.

(35:39):
It's one of the highest rated mail box in shipping
companies in Savvando Valley, so I'm pretty proud about that.
Uh So, my question for you Shanna and Styler is
what are some of the challenges of running a film
festival as a mother and daughter duo?

Speaker 1 (35:57):
Good question, and I take the lead on this fun sure.

Speaker 5 (36:03):
Some of the Honestly, we talk about it all the time,
how lucky you we are because everything just fell into
place and kind of took off so fast that we
always and we have such a good team in my
mom and I. I think we have the same kind of
quick problem solving brains, so the problems don't last for
that long, thank god, because we also were both overthinkers,

(36:27):
so we're like, we're not going to stop until this
is resolved. But last year, I think our biggest hardship
was having the film festival be a destination film fest
and Roundtop, Texas. A lot of people don't know what
that what Roundtop is still, and then the people that

(36:49):
do they know it for the antiques, and so when
people were looking it up it nobody knew really what
to expect, and we all we could do is just
promise they were going to have a good time. I'm
so the submissions, it was hard to get those to
roll in at first, and but we had such a
great mickey, We had a great coordinator of that, so

(37:13):
it ended up working out. And then this year we're like,
we can never have that happen again. But it ended
up working out. But this year now we have so
many people that were unfortunately going to have to say
no to so it all ends up working out, and
I think it's been good with both of our shared positivity.
But that was definitely yeah.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
I mean, that's a really nice problem to have.

Speaker 2 (37:35):
You have a problem, that's a that's a good constanza.
Welcome to the Mom's Club.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
Where are you from? Tell us a little bit about
yourself and do you have a question? O?

Speaker 11 (37:49):
Hi guys, Hiza, I am from Brazil originally.

Speaker 5 (37:54):
I live in beautiful Miami Peach, Florida.

Speaker 11 (37:57):
And I'm the mama to an incredible eleven year old
girl who I don't know where she.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
Is right now.

Speaker 5 (38:03):
That's right, we'll find by day. I run a marketing agency.

Speaker 11 (38:09):
I work predominantly with hospitality projects all over the nation,
and I really love the mom clubs, you guys. I've
been following you guys for so so long. I think
she has Brazilians we really pride ourselves on energy and
just surrounding ourselves with the right people, the right moms,
people that bring out the best in us.

Speaker 5 (38:27):
So yeah, super excited to be here.

Speaker 11 (38:29):
My question, I guess is a little bit for both
of you. Listen, my goal is to definitely have I
only have a little one, so if I'm able to
do something with her when she's older, that would be
a blessing. So I guess wanted to get a little
bit deeper and kind of understand how has this made
this chapter of your life more meaningful working together?

Speaker 6 (38:50):
I mean, for me, it's been wonderful because you know,
like you you're in it and you're raising your child
and you're doing all the things, and then they go
off to college and you're like, oh, my gosh, I'm
an empty nest for now, what am I going to
do with myself? And so that was kind of the
first part. But then when mine went off to college,

(39:11):
COVID struck, so she was home very quickly, so it
was kind of like she's back in the nest again,
and so it was a slower transition into that phase.
And then she went off and she you know, worked
and she moved to New York, and then she came
back and then when she said yes, I'm interested in this,

(39:34):
let's do it. I mean, it was so rewarding to
me to be able to take that and to share
her passion and my passion, you know, of giving back
and be able to turn that into something beautiful. And
this festival has just been it's been beautiful and it's

(39:55):
growing and we're excited and it's something super neat to
share with your order.

Speaker 3 (40:02):
Yeah, ditto.

Speaker 5 (40:05):
And I think watching my mom just now being an adult,
seeing her step into this powerful role and you know,
have start watching you have a new chapter and make
new friends and see all that. That's been really cool
for me to watch too. So it's been fun.

Speaker 4 (40:25):
I know. Wow, you know we were going to eat tissues,
the tissues.

Speaker 2 (40:31):
In this new studio of ours. That was that was
quite inspiring, Ladies. I wish I had a daughter. Now
I have two sons.

Speaker 4 (40:37):
You have many daughters between us, that's true.
