and male identity is renownced psychologists, author and speaker Gunter Subota.
This is Inspire Change.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Before I begin the actual podcast, I would like to
respectfully acknowledge the gategor people of the Order Nation, who
are the traditional custodians of the lane on which I work.
I would also like to pay my respects to their
elders past and Presentlcome everybody to another episode of Inspired

(02:02):
Change with Gunter. I'm your host.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Look everybody for another episode of Inspired Change with Gunter.

Speaker 5 (02:10):
I'm your host.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
I'm a psychologist, an author, speaker, and most recently a researcher.

Speaker 6 (02:18):
So I've added a few things to my list of activities.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
This particular podcast is a little different because I'm actually
on holidays for a week to tack some well earned
rest and recuperation, so spending that time with family. My
grandson just had appendicitis and had his appendix out an appendectomy,

(02:49):
and so he's not able to do much.

Speaker 5 (02:50):
So I'm currently out on a walk. It's a beautiful.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Sunny day down here on the south coast of New
South Wales, and part of the reason why I'm doing.
This particular podcast is a bit of a reflection in
terms of the importance of taking time out and just
not being immersed in whatever activity, even though it's pleasurable.

(03:16):
I mean, I love my research, I'm really getting into it,
but it also means having my brain constantly switched on.
So if I'm puffing a bit, it's mainly because I'm
doing quite a good walk along the beach here and
just enjoying the sunlight and people driving by and bikes

(03:42):
and walking. So it's a quiet spot which I'm really enjoying.

Speaker 5 (03:50):
So why is this sort of place really important?

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Well, the first thing is that for most of us
living in any form of city THESS, especially in a
place like Sydney, we it is noticeable that we're overstimulated
and overly active, is very very little downtime, and one

(04:18):
of those one of the consequences of that is that
we tend to.

Speaker 5 (04:26):
Have difficulties switching off.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
I mean one of a As a psychotherapist and a psychologist,
one of the biggest things that I see with my
clients is they.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
Have difficulty either getting to sleep or staying asleep.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Now, partly that's because, as I said, inherently, they are overstimulated,
the system is over using adrenaline, they're often loaded with cortisol.

Speaker 5 (04:58):
And they're just struggling to wind down.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
So on top of that, we have technology that constantly
keeps us on mentally as well. So not only are
they often watching TV, but the doom scrolling on their phone,
so downtime is not happening. The other part that's really

(05:26):
evident is that if you live in the suburblock hours,
one of the things that you will find is that
there's a lot of work going on around you in
the neighborhood, landscaping, leaf blowing, building, and so the noise

(05:49):
is persistent.

Speaker 5 (05:51):
Now, you do, after a while, get used to that noise,
but it's there.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
You know, the range registers everything and folds it away.
That doesn't mean it's a good thing. What it says
is that we consistently inundated with technological noise. It's interesting
because you know, I can listen to the sweeping of

(06:19):
brew with absolutely no reaction, but the moment someone turns
on a leaf blower, the bane of my existence trying
to get stuff done with that noise in the background.
And even though our place is fairly well insulated to noise.

Speaker 5 (06:38):
It doesn't help. Now.

Speaker 4 (06:42):
The other thing I think is really important in terms
of taking some time out and with the rest and recreation.

Speaker 5 (06:50):
Is that whole act of slowing down.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
You know, not rushing around, not having a schedule of
fifty million things to do.

Speaker 5 (07:01):
And it's one of the things I think that makes
places like.

Speaker 7 (07:08):
You know, resorts so attractive because ultimately in a lot
of them, well you're going to get to do is
sit around a pool and figure out what your next
meal is going to be or what you drink you're
going to have.

Speaker 5 (07:24):
Yeah, you know without being a party paper.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
Too much alcohol is look good for you either, right,
it will interfere with your sleep, just like noiseless.

Speaker 5 (07:36):
So the idea I'm getting away from things.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
And not immersing yourself into just another load of activity
is fundamental to well being.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
You know, the air is clean here.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
You know, in the background, there's you know, the noise
of the waves.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
Occasionally a car.

Speaker 4 (07:59):
Goes by, you know, as I'm talking, there's one coming up,
but that's field far between. We don't get that a
lot all right where we live.

Speaker 5 (08:16):
It's a fair call to say it's constant.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
And then if you go out, you're trying to find
a parking spot. All those things are stressful to the compact.
In getting out into nature I think is just absolutely essential.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
You know, the smell from the.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
Trees and the vegetation along the beach is just fundamentally
so important.

Speaker 5 (08:53):
So what else is going on here? Well, it's obviously
school holidays is surprisingly in US. I haven't seen too
many kids around, so I'm not sure what the sort
of doing now.

Speaker 4 (09:06):
My grandsons are busy at home. Well one of them, Scrapped,
is not allowed to do anything for three weeks, and
so you know, there is a little bit of TV.
But there's also some lego building, which is also pretty
good for the brain. We've also played some chess, interesting

(09:29):
because my reference would have been backgammon, but for some reason,
these guys just aren't quite into it, and I'm not
sure exactly why.

Speaker 5 (09:40):
So their call always is let's play chess.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
So interestingly enough, with my youngest grandson, I made a
rookie error and was resoundingly beaten by him, which was
an interesting experience. I did myself in the end, and
with my older grandson he basically got it down to

(10:06):
one edge. They're pretty good players, and they will get
to be as better players as they get older. I
can see it in the way that they think they're
quite strategic in their way. So one of the things
that reminded me of is when we say kids don't
have the capacity to.

Speaker 5 (10:26):
Organize themselves well because their brain's not that developed. I
have to question that.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
Watching these guys, and certainly with my granddaughter too, they
they are potentially much deeper in their their assessment of
things than.

Speaker 5 (10:46):
What we give them credit for. And here's another thing.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
So when we have a quiet space around us, it
gives us.

Speaker 5 (10:57):
The opportunity to really engage with.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
Those who are around us when we're not distracted. As
I said, there's a bit of TV, but not what
there's certainly no devices. They don't get to play with devices.
They send me a couple of times on my ipean
organizing stuff, but overall not much. We said, we talk.

(11:23):
I had a great conversation with my grandson yesterday in
the sun, the one who's had his appendix out.

Speaker 5 (11:31):
And he's traveling pretty well.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
But that capacity to be in contact with each other,
doing things together, certainly as a grandparent, gives you the
opportunity to actually pay attention to how they're going.

Speaker 6 (11:48):
Now, I'm not saying these guys are exceptional.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
In any way other than they probably are righter than
the average bear in some respects.

Speaker 5 (11:58):
But we can do that with every child.

Speaker 4 (12:01):
And when we as adults sit and spend that time
without judgment, with just being there wisdom, we can see
how often we underestimate and undervalue who they are as
a person. So I'm really, really thoroughly enjoying this and

(12:28):
it's just a.

Speaker 5 (12:29):
Bit of a highlight.

Speaker 4 (12:30):
There's the other side, which is my wife and I
are completely out of our routines and things are not
where they are, and you know, we're pretty active normally
in our lifestyle, so there's a little bit of a
hole and that takes a little bit of adjusting.

Speaker 6 (12:47):
But overall we're doing pretty well. So this is where
I stay. Get the opportunity takes some time out and
doing so.

Speaker 4 (12:58):
See if you can inspire some and give them an
opportunity to make contact with Knight Sharon, the kids around them,
your families. This is me until next time, signing off,
Stay inspired and inspire others.

Speaker 8 (13:16):
