Speaker 1 (00:42):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (00:42):
See?

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Look at that's she's omitting a bunch of stuff. She
gets to choose what you know and what you don't know. Yeah,
sounds like a dictator.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Let me talk a little more. It's gonna be pretty epic.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
I'm not gonna lie. I'm very nervous. Heidi's gonna have
four breaks every day. Yea, do whatever she wants. And
when I say whatever she wants, I mean she had
to clear it with me. We've got yeah, there's some
changes coming. It'll be it's all good, good stuff, and

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Surveys and studies and such brought to you by jascasemedical
dot com. You probably maybe know this from your own experiences,
like if you want to get in the zone, whether
you're at the gym working out, or if you're at
work trying to get something done, having the right music
can help.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Oh yeah, but what is.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
The best kind of music to boost your focus and productivity. Well,
there's a stuf that they've done, and they talk about
things with workflow music that helps you think faster and
feel better while completing challenging mental tasks. Types of background
audio like deep focusing tracks from a streaming service, current hits,
or simulated office noise simulated office.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Noise office noise if you're working at home.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Researchers from various American universities determine that the special workflow
music maintained a moderate fast tempo with steady beats. They
didn't overwhelm the listener. Only participants listening to this specially
designed music showed significant improvement in both work and mood,
so having a better performances. Perhaps surprisingly to some pop hits,

(02:42):
despite their popularity, showed significant no significant benefits in your
mood or your performance. Okay, so I'm gonna see if
I can crank up some office noises. Thanks for listening
to the John and Heidi Show.

Speaker 1 (02:54):

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Did you know? Brought to you by Genesis Gooldira dot com. Heidi,
did you know that the kitcat filling inside of a
kitcat is made from a damaged kitcat? Did you know that?

Speaker 3 (03:32):
I did not, but I absolutely love kit.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
They know how to recycle because when a kitcat bar
comes off imperfect, they don't throw it away. Sometimes it's
like an air bubble or there's, you know, some little
scratch on the coating, ye throw it out. Instead, they
grind it up. That's perfect. They squish it into the
center of another KitKat, so the kitcat is filled with kitcats.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Love that.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
That's cool. We don't know everything, but now we know
this now Big screen screen brought to you by Radiosavings
dot com. The world of peaky Blinders is not over yet.
According to Stephen Knight, one of the creators, they're talking
about a new film spinoff. They hinted there could be
more than just this particular one. The upcoming movie is

(04:15):
called The Immortal Man, a Peaky Blinder's film, but they
say we're not done yet. He's like, I can't announce
anything yet. I think they need to find out if
people go to this one. First, incarcerated movie producer and
convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein is suing his brother and fellow
Weinstein Company co founder Bob Weinstein for fraud. WHOA, So yeah,

(04:35):
it's a loan payment that was missed of forty five
million dollars. So a bit much and in anticipation is
building right now for Christopher Nolan's next epic, Universal unveiled
the first look at Matt Damon playing the lead in
Nolan's adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. So I didn't even
know they were working on this. Did you know anything
about that?

Speaker 3 (04:55):
I had no idea.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
It's going to be apparently released in twenty six July
of next year, so that's something to look forward too.
Big Screen, Little Screen brought to you by Radiosavings dot Com.

Speaker 6 (05:07):

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Now your scoop of the day, it comes your way
courtesy of jyscasemedical dot com. This is Cool. Victoria, British Columbia,
has been named Canada's Sexiest city for twenty twenty five. Yeah,
I wonder what Victoria's Secret is.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Oh my gosh, I really should have seen that.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
As dumb as I thought I was going to be.
For those of you know, there's a store called Victoria's
Secret in Nevermind. Where need to move on?

Speaker 3 (05:58):
We're all on the same page.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
A drop of water is all it takes to activate
a new type of bandage the developers say, generates an
electrical field to speed up heat healing. How cool is that?

Speaker 3 (06:10):
How cool is that?

Speaker 2 (06:11):
North Carolina State University researcher say the one dollar bandage
could transform treatment for the millions of people who struggle
with chronic pain electronic wounds.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Rather, that's so so cool.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
I love that it's only a dollar too. Yeah, that's
really cool. In testing with diabetic mice, let's just pause
for a second. I didn't even know there were diabetic mice.
I think these are mice that they give diabetes so
they can test things on them. That's that is pretty cool.
So in testing with diabetic mice, seventy five percent of
wounds treated with the electrical bandage healed completely by day eleven,

(06:43):
versus zero percent with standard bandages. This smart bandage, which
uses a combination of magnesium and silver silver chloride, allows
patients to receive advanced wound treatment at home without visiting
a clinic or using a bulk any sort of bulky equipment,
and its effectiveness has been compared to a treatment that

(07:04):
would cost you over twenty thousand dollars if you went
row So like, okay, you could go in and have
this twenty thousand dollars treatment here, or you could do
it at home for a dollar.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
That's crazy talk.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
I'm going to probably choose the dollar, but I think
it should also come with some sort of video so
I know what I'm doing.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
I wonder if you have to be diabetic to use it.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
No, I think it's multiple things. They just tested it
on diabetic because wounds heal sleep. Yeah, yeah, so I
don't know. Very cool stuff. I've got the whole story
phone read it in the show notes for today at
John Anddeidishow dot com.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Thank you for listening to The John and Heidi Show.
Saturday Night Live recently celebrated their fiftieth anniversary and our
guest today, Susan Morrison. She even got to go to
the after party. She's the author of a book called
Lauren the man who invented SNL. Excited to chat about
the book. But what was that party like? But that
was a blast?

Speaker 4 (08:25):
Yeah, it was one for the ages. It was just
wall to wall funny celebrities.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Think about the number of people who got their start
on Saturday Night Live, I mean that is a big
number of people.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
Yeah, absolutely. I mean one of the reasons I wanted
to write this book is I realized Laura Michaels is
responsible for what Americans think is funny like for fifty
years now. That's just such a profound impact to have
on the culture. And for most of those years, he's
basically stayed behind the curtain. He hasn't been a public figure,
he hasn't talked much to the press. So I was

(08:56):
really interested in trying to get a good understanding of
what made him tick, what made him able to have
this power.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
And Susan, I will admit, when I was about eight
years old, I had this vision that I was going
to be on Saturday Night Live on NBC, and then
after that I was going to host the Tonight Show
on NBC. So officially, Jimmy Fallon is living a young
John Small's dream. But I think so many people had
that dream. It was such a fun show.

Speaker 4 (09:21):
Yeah, so it was. It's very interesting how many of
the people on the show are connected to the show
to have these childhood stories. Like John Hamm told me
his mother didn't let him watch the show, but his
divorce dad let him stay up and watch Belushi. You know,
so it had a kind of a feeling of like, ooh,
you know, some secret thing. And I think that's always

(09:44):
sort of part of its allure. You got to stay
up late to.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Watch and Susan, if you want to start a fight,
all you have to do is talk about which cast
was the best cast. Everybody has very strong opinions about that,
but the one constant has always been Lauren Michaels.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
That's right, Yeah, he you know, he likes to say
that people favorite cast is very often the one when
they were in high school, and I think that's because,
you know, he also says that the show is sort
of rooted in adolescence and the kind of defiance and
mischief making that you know, grips you when you're an adolescent,

(10:16):
and I think it's one of the reasons why people
have such a warm place in their heart for the
show because it you know, it's like the way the
music that was on the AM radio when you were
sixteen resonates with you your whole life. And as for Laurence Longevity,
I think that he learned something really early on in
his career before us and know, when he was working
for other variety shows. It's something he said to me

(10:39):
a lot of different times, and that's when the music changes,
you have to change. Even though the formula of the
show has stayed the same, he tinkers with it, you know,
he updates the music, he updates the technology, you go
from films to digital shorts, he updates the politics. But
it's a basically durable format that has lasted the decades.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Absolutely now, Susan, I was born just a few months
after the premiere episode of Saturday Night Live, so it's
been around my entire lifetime. But even for people who
are older than me, I think they also feel like
it's been around forever because it kind of fits in
every generation. Really, that's right.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
You know, sometime in the late eighties, Lauren had a
kind of a real breakthrough. He told me. Should he
keep hiring baby boomers? He asked himself, and they realized, Okay,
I have to make a decision. Is this a seventies
show that I'm going to just keep doing into the
eighties and nineties, or do I remake the show for
each generation? And that's of course what he did, and
that's what makes it.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
So great again. Our guest today is Susan Morrison her
new book, Lauren, the Man who invented SNL And when
did you start writing this book?

Speaker 4 (11:39):
I guess around nine years ago. I had the idea
of doing it after the fortieth anniversary show, which I
watched and I was just stunned at how good it was,
and you know all the points you just made, how
it's lasted. And I knew Lauren slightly because I worked
for him in nineteen eighty four briefly, and so it's

(12:00):
all this book proposal. And then I went to see
him and I said, Lauren, I've just signed a contract
to write a book about you in the show. I
don't need anything from you, because you know I'm connected
in your world. I know a lot of your people.
But if you wanted to talk to me, you know,
give me some time and access. It would be a richer,
better book. And he looked like he was about to
have a heart attack at first, and then you know,

(12:20):
a few days later we met for a drink and
he just started telling his stories. I think he liked me,
he likes the New Yorker where I work. But also
I think he was at a point in his life
where he was starting to think about his legacy and
he was realizing how remarkable this thing of his was.
And I just happened to get him at the right time.
And it was such a pleasure spending all those hours

(12:43):
talking with him and his people. I interviewed him forty
or fifty times.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
Talking about a legacy. Think of all the major stars
who are stars today because they came through the channel
of SNL. Again. Our guest today Susan Morrison. Her new
book is called Lauren, The Man who invented SNL. Thank
you for your time today.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
My pleasure. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
The book is available right now. I've got a link
to it in the show notes for today at John
adheidishow dot com.

Fun fact for you, Heidie John. In the eighteen fifties,
some Paris newspapers were printed on rubber so they can
be read in the bathtub. Oh good stuff. Fun factory, Heidi.
What's that?

Speaker 3 (13:51):
John?

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Sunshine can work as a natural antidepressant, So if you're depressed,
is true? In the shades man, that is so true.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
I get so depressed. But you like to close the
shades in the house.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
It's so depressing part vampire. Maybe I don't know. Sometimes
it's just too bright. Fun fact for you, Heiding, is
that eating spicy food can boost your metabolism and cause
your body to burn more fat. More spicy food for
me please. Fun fact for you, Heide, it takes eight
and a half minutes for light to get from the
Sun to Earth, so that's good to know. And our

(14:22):
final fun fact for you, Heidie, what's that?

Speaker 7 (14:25):
John?

Speaker 2 (14:25):
It takes just six minutes for alcohol to affect your brain,
so if you're drinking, if you take a drink, it
doesn't kick in for six minutes. Okay, So that's good
to know.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
That's good to know.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
I feel as though I've seen that happen so many times.
It's like I'm married to somebody. Oh that's you. Several
fun facts now, you know, thanks for listening to the
John and Heidi Show.

Speaker 1 (14:46):

Time Now for the Mintmobile question of the Day. It
comes your way courtesy of mintervention dot com. Question for you, Heidi.
People who spend at least two hours and forty minutes
per week on this are more likely to advance in
their career. It's not what you would think on two
hours ago. Minis no playing video games. Oh so two

(15:37):
hours and forty minutes.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
Of via you're not doing it on the clock.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
Yeah, it makes you a little more agile for work apparently.
Mintmobile Question of the Day comes your way courtesy of

Now some weird news brought to you by Weird Gift
of the Day dot com and AI powered Deathclock is
causing a buzz by claiming to predict when you might die.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Yeah, don't do this. I saw this movie. It's a
bad idea. Do not download that AUP do.

Speaker 8 (16:31):
The free fill it out called deathclock Yeah, analyzes your
personal data like your age, your body mass index, diet
exercise level, and smoking habits to predict the date of
your demise as well as how you will die.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
The clock calculates the exact age of a user how
long you will live to count down the days, hours, minutes,
and seconds until the Grim Reaper shows up, which incidentally
is in the logo of the website. After the user
inputs their necessary information, a website generates a tomb stone
with your prescription I'm sorry, with your predicted date rather
not prescription. At last check, the AI powered clock predicted

(17:07):
the final day of over sixty three million users. But
it seems that one must read the fine print whenever
dealing with the Grim Reaper, because a disclaimer states that
should be used just for fun only, because that seems
like a lot of fun, so much fun.

Speaker 3 (17:20):
So much fun. They seeing them panic over whatever.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
This they is unlikely to predict your actual death date,
which is good because mine was last Thursday according to
this website.

Speaker 3 (17:29):
So I saw this movie. It did not end well
for anybody.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
That idea Weird news brought to you by Weird Gift
of the Day dot com. Time now for the list
brought to you by Jascase Medical dot com. Stuff you
should not buy. People of the BuzzFeed community shared products
that they think are kind of not so good. They
call them scams and whatnot. So a majority of the

(17:53):
anti aging skincare products are not good, according to the
people of BuzzFeed. Yeah, now they just go know, most
of this stuff is just horrible memory enhancers. They say,
there's not a lot of evidence that these things work.
Somebody else said, my mother bought weight loss socks and
it costs forty dollars. I'm not sure that is. They

(18:14):
stop you from going to the fridge. Deodorant should be
unigender and nonsensed. They're saying, you know, they have this
geodoran for men, this for women. Non prescription products that
promise to make your hair grow faster or detox your liver.
They say, if it's scientifically impossible for most of these
non prescription things. Most vitamin supplements, they say, are scams.

(18:36):
They're not regulated by the FDA. They could literally put
anything in there. Carpet powder to freshen up your carpet
before you vacuum. And newer versions of phones. About five
years ago, phones kind of quit getting better. According to
the people of BuzzFeed, these are not my opinions, that's
their opinion. You can see the list in the show
notes for today at johnndtheidishow dot com.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
Time now for the quote of the day, It comes
your way courtesy of Radiosavings dot com. Take a listen
to this, Heidi. Your quote today is from Maywest, who says,
I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
We've read that one, I know we have so many times.
Would you like me to take that over too?

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Would you just leave me alone so we get to changes.
Today is the final day of the show, being the
way the show is. Heidi for some reason is later
insisting that she gets to do some things now, so
this will be moving. Things are moving around, it'll be fun,
so you'll sick around, and you know, if they keep
us on the radio, you see. Thanks for listening to

(20:05):
the John and Heidi Show. Joy. This portion of the
John and Heidi Show is brought to you by the
John and Heidi Show. That sounds kind of funny, but
it's true. Go to your local radio station and ask
them to start carrying the John and Heidi Show. Here's
the best part. They can carry the show for free.
They play a couple commercials, but it doesn't cost them
anything every month. So if you know a radio station

(20:25):
that could use a little bit of help, send them
our way. Send them to Johnandeidishow dot com. Again, johnandeidishow
dot com. We would love to do a radio program
in your community. Then you could listen to the podcast
and listen to us on the radio.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
Jody.

Speaker 2 (20:44):
We always like to wrap things up around here with
good news, and I think this is good news. Take
a listen to this headline your rescue just rescue to life.
A dog becomes a hero and saves a nearly frozen
man and water Town, Wisconsant Yeah. A rescue dog named
Jagger like Mick, Jagger is hailed a hero after discovering
a nearly frozen man in Watertown, Wisconsin.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2 (21:06):
Katie Higgins, that's the owner of Jagger, was taking him
to her parents' house when he quickly said something was wrong.
Jagger comes through the house as a regular routine and
he likes to check things out on the deck in
the back, she said. But pretty instantly he alerted us
that there was something going on. He was barking towards
the back corner of the yard, and at first she

(21:27):
was thinking, what is going on? Is there a squirrel?

Speaker 7 (21:29):
Is it?

Speaker 2 (21:30):
She walks out there, she realizes, oh wow, there's a
man laying in the snow. He had fallen down between
the bushes.

Speaker 7 (21:36):
Oh my gosh, said.

Speaker 2 (21:37):
We looked down, we saw this man and she said,
I didn't even know if he was alive. Jagger the
dog was barking. The man managed to move his head
a little bit. That's when they realized, okay, he is alive.
That's good. They dialed nine one one. First responders showed up.
They said he is expected to survive, says my dad
was the first one to say, Wow, your rescue just
rescued a life. Jagger the dog heroic actions made Higgins

(22:01):
even more grateful for the little dog she adopted from
the Humane Society four years ago. He was in a
shelter that they were going to be done with him.
They call it a kill shelter. She rescued him, allowing
this dog an additional four years so far and now
because of this dog.

Speaker 3 (22:16):
This man has the rest of his life. That's amazing,
She hopes.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
Jaggers story inspires other people to support local shelters and
adopt pets in need. I've got a link to the
story if you want to read it. It is in the
show notes for today at Johndeidishow dot com. Time say goodbye,
Heide bye Heide, Goodbye, everybody, have a great day. Thank
you so much for listening to the John and Heidie

New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
