what the Diamond King is. We're not talking about diamonds,
We're talking about baseball. There's a guy who is a
like an artist who paints. He painted like a bunch
(00:53):
of really impressive paintings that became baseball cards. Oh cool,
So it was specifically for that anyway, gonna chat with
His nickname is the Diamond King because he's got these
uh these baseball card art. So they did a documentary
about it, and John Ortiz, very cool actor, is the
voice of it. We're gonna chat with him all about
it coming up.

so excited about all this. I am really first ever
Kentucky Derby party. We've never done this before. So what
is the drink for today?
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Well, obviously the Minton Julie I kind of thought, so yeah,
you can't. You can't celebrate the Kentucky Derby without.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
A mint jew Well you could, but you know, and
you need.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Mince Briggs simple syrup bourbon. It's quite the process.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
You should have saw Heidi putting all this stuff together. Well,
very nice. I do have a link to the drink
in the show notes for today at John anddeidishow dot com.
Speaker 3 (02:05):

of dollars. I finally convinced John to download it too.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah, it's cool and I'm saving money.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
I think we should have a little challenge. Okay, let's
see who can get more people to sign up this
month to save money on gas and more.
Speaker 2 (02:18):

Surveys and Studies and such. A new survey of two
thousand American drivers, split evenly among generations, found that despite
the stereotype of younger generations always having their phones in
their hands, gen z is using tech smarter while driving.
Fifty four percent admitted to eating while driving.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Though, oh everybody eats when they drive. Yeah, well not everybody,
but well everybody, I think everybody. Only Only fifty admitted.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Fifty three percent of millennials admitted it, forty seven percent
of gen Z and thirty two percent of Baby boomers.
Boomers are like, I eat my soup when I get home.
The survey, conducted by Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April,
Oh it was for them, not by them, found that
Gen Z drivers were also more likely to drive well tired,
and they've had heated arguments with somebody in the car
(03:24):
while they were driving. They also found to be more
likely to let a pet sit in their lap while driving,
and a more positive note, younger drivers were found most
likely to use car specific settings like driving mode and
car play mode for their phones. You know, so they
have like they're prepared, they kind of set up everything
for that. So anyway, they say, it's a clear sign
that younger drivers are using tech smarter than the rest
(03:46):
of Well, that's a good thing, but you know the
rest of it wasn't so great. Surveys, N studies and such.
On The John and Heidi Show, The Heidi Show, Thank

(04:11):
Mickey Rourke was booted off Celebrity Big Brother, but he's
not going down without a fight. TMZ reports that he's
exploring legal action against the show for allegedly withholding money
that he feels he's entitled to. So this was all
kind of a big honkin deal. And I've not followed
a lot of this is happening in the United Kingdom.
Apparently that's where the lawyers are that he's working with against.
So I don't know the whole thing. I haven't followed
(04:33):
at all, but the whole thing is just kind of bizarre.
And Kevin Spacey has revived his role in House of Cards.
Frank Underwood. He revived the character to help Tim Dillon
promote his new Netflix comedy special, So there's a promo
for On Your Mother, Spacey, as Underwood tells Dylan, your podcasts,
you podcasters think you inherited the Kingdom. So anyway, it's
(04:58):
it's kind of fun that he brought this character. You're back,
and you know, I have to.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Say, I know there's been a lot of controversy around
Kevin Spacey, but he is hands down one of these.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
He is tellest actors well. And the thing is there's
stuff coming out where you're finding out that some of this,
some of these allegations are just allegations, and I'm like, boy,
his career is ruined. How horrible, how horrible would be
if you find out that wasn't even real. Again, I'm
not taking a stance. That's why I usually avoid these subjects.
So let's just skip on. Thanks for listening to the
John and Heidi Show. My Pillow had a big allotment

now my pillow dot com slash happy Heidi, did you
know that chewing gum is banned in Singapore?
Speaker 3 (06:02):
Really?
Speaker 2 (06:03):
In an effort to keep up with the city's reputation
for being spotlessly clean and Singapore community banned chewing gum
in nineteen ninety two, following laws against spitting and urinating
anywhere but in a toilet. In two thousand and four,
the band was slightly lifted for therapeutic, dental and nicotine gums.
So if there's something where it's like, hey, I need
(06:23):
this gum, but that's kind of cool. I'm a big
fan of those. No urinating in public too, you know,
and no spitting. I mean, shouldn't that just go without?
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Should you check out Singapore?
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Yeah, well we'll head there this week. No, probably not.
We don't know everything, but now we know. This time
out for the joke of the day with Heidi Small
What you got, Heidi?
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Okay, So these are I found some more dark humor jokes. Again,
which which are my favorites?
Speaker 2 (06:46):
I know they're your favorites. I'm always concerned you are.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Okay. This one says even people who are good for
nothing have the capacity to bring a smile to your face,
like when you push them down the stairs.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Oh my goodness. Yeah, it's funny because it's true. Pretty
proud of yourself over there? Wow? Is that all your want? Oh?
You made it seem as though you had a bunch, But.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
You have a bunch.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Save some of those for another day. It's the joke
of the day on the John and Heidi Show.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Time now for the scoop of the day. A rare
baseball card was sold at auction for one point one
million dollars. Yeah, how crazy is that? That's pretty cool though,
isn't it.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
It's insane?
Speaker 2 (08:00):
One point one million?
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Who is on the car?
Speaker 2 (08:02):
I don't have all the details. Why is that so
rare we spring go check and see if we have
an interest. Probably not, since we don't have any baseball cards.
Wikipedia is one of the most popular websites out there,
but have you seen some of the pictures used down there?
Even Wikisone editors admit it's featured photos, especially for celebrities,
(08:25):
can be terrible. But now a group of amateur photographers
have banned together on a mission to fix it. Part
of the problem is professional photographers who attend movie premieres
et cetera, tend to work for agencies and their work
is copyrighted. That means to use their picture a fee
must be paid. Well, Wiki is largely run by volunteers,
they don't have a budget for that, so Wiki Portraits
(08:47):
has been launched to recruit volunteer photographers from around the
world to get them to give permission to attend film
festivals and then conferences and other events where famous people go,
and then they can snap photos and add it to
their Wiki profile by that. By the way, wiki uh
has so many unflattering photos of famous people that there's
(09:10):
actually Instagram account dedicated to the worst ones. So if
you want to check out the Wiki Portraits page, I've
got a link to that, and I've got a link
to that Instagram.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
Use wiki for ed.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, I used to. And then our son when he
was like fifteen, he and his friend were in his
bedroom like changing Wikipedia. I was like, what are you
guys doing? And they were authorized what do they call it? Whatever?
Speaker 3 (09:32):
It is, contributor.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
It's like they're fifteen, and I'm like, what doing this?
And I gotta say, he and his friend are both geniuses.
But I'm like, that just made me think, don't ever
cite wikiped exactly. Thanks for listening to The John and
Heidi Show show. Thank you so much for listening to
The John and Heidi Show. Brought to you in park
by Jascasemedical dot com. Do you have a Jay's case?
(09:56):
You can get all of the details for free right
now at jayce Medical dot com. Thank you for listening
to The John and Heidi Show. Excited a visit with
award winning character actor John Ortiz, and we know him
from a bunch of great projects and we're going to
talk to him about the latest, The Diamond King. So
first of all, thank you for taking the time to chat.
Let's talk about the Diamond King. This looks awesome.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
Thank you so much. It's so great to be here. Yeah,
the Diamond King, you know, it's one of those fortuitous
opportunities that came my way. I love documentaries, I really do.
I love them all, especially sports ones, and I'm a
huge baseball fan, and so I immediately jumped at the chance
to help tell the story of the great artist Dick Perez.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
And there are probably some sports fans who know that
name for sure, but for folks that are maybe not
big sports fans, let's talk about why this is so
significant and why this film needed to be made.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
Absolutely well, Dick Perez is one of America's greatest artists.
He's the Baseball Hall of Fame's official artists. A lot
of people might have who don't even know an item
of his, and that was the Diamond King. That would
be a special prize possession in each pack of Don
(11:11):
Russ baseball cards, and it was one player selected from
every team would have the honor of being painted by Dick.
And these cards, these specific cards, the Diamond King were
just jumped out because it was his work. They weren't photographed.
(11:34):
It was an actual painting, so you had an artistic
rendition of that player's personality or particular moment that was
special in their season the previous season, and it just
jumped out at you. And it's high quality. They were
esthetically just beautiful, and so a lot of kids collecting
(11:58):
cards loved the this thing but had no idea about
the man. So this movie is all about getting to
know this man and this artist and everything that he's
contributed to baseball and to the fabric of this country.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
And there's a lot of people who grew up in
the eighties collecting baseball cards, and like you said, they
probably have these and maybe didn't even know who it
was they created them.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Absolutely, that's how the director decided to make the movie.
He was sharing his baseball cards with his son and
broke out his old box and was showing him the cards,
and his son asked, oh, what's this because it really
does jump out. It's a painting, and he was like, Oh,
those are diamond kings. And as his son was asking
(12:48):
him questions about it, he realized, Oh, that's kind of
an interesting question. I don't know, and he started digging
and found out it was created by Dick Perez and
who is this Dick Perez? And as he was finding
more and more information out. He was like, I think
this would make a great movie. So he called Dick
Perez and the rest is history.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
I love that now you've had a chance to be
a part of some really fun projects Silver Linings, Playbook
and Apple TV's Bad Monkey, and you know, so many
fun projects. How different is it working on something like
that compared to working on something like this where you know,
it's more of a documentary rather than kind of a
comedy or you know, a TV show, is it night
and day difference.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
It's kind of the same. You got to deliver the
good you know, you got to perform. But I think
the biggest difference is that I'm not playing a character,
so when you see this movie, it's really me and
I can't hide my enthusiasm for the sport and my fandom.
In fact, the first couple of takes, I was trying
to do some like I don't know, bad Will Morgan
(13:53):
Freeman impression or something, you know, and because I thought, well,
this is what a narrator does might sound like. And
the director Mark Evans, who's really wonderful, was like, let's
do it again, but like, you know, just more you
and I was like, oh, just me, and he's like, yeah,
you that's why, that's why I hired you.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
I love that sometimes.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Playing yourself or being your true self is harder than
people might think. So I think that's the biggest difference.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
I love that well. I appreciate you taking the time
to chat with us about it and The Diamond King.
It's out now. People can watch this online and they'll
get a chance to see you be and you and
I'm excited for people to see that.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Absolutely. It's available on video on demand through whatever streaming
service folks might watch, like Amazon Prime or Apple TV
or YouTube.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Very nice. I appreciate you taking the time to chat, sir.
Thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
That's absolutely Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (14:50):

Speaker 3 (16:30):
This one actually kind of already knew.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Oh what's but I didn't know.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
All the details. Fortune cookies were invented in America.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
I had heard that, Yeah, said there's more details.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Yeah, well they were invented by a gentleman named macatohg
Yarwa something like that. I'm sure I did from San
Francisco in the eighteen nineties. Oh wow, and they were
sold at the Golden Gate Parks Japanese tea garden.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
Well, that's cool.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
Yeah, so I didn't. I mean, I knew that it
was not an ancient Chinese thing by any means. But
it's kind of cool. It is kind of cool, take
our place in history.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
That's awesome. That's news to me, And that is also
news to me.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
You've probably heard the odds for Upside. I've saved hundreds
of dollars. I finally convinced John to download it too.

Fun fact for you, Heidi, what's that?
Speaker 4 (17:44):
John?
Speaker 2 (17:45):
There's a Cinderella story in Finnish folklore, but the girl's
name is not Cinderella. Her name is Tuna t U
na Tuna. Huh, so tuna story instead. Okay. Fun fact
that John. Business travelers gain an average of five pounds
every year they're on the road. Boy, I have outpaced that.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
You're not on the road.
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Fun fact for you, Heide. Red haired men are most
likely to go bald, and I know several red haired
men who have gone bald. How weird is that? That
is weird? Wonder why that is? Fun fact for you, Heidi.
Male gamblers bet more money when they bring their wives.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
I don't know if impressive.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
I think maybe it's skis. I'm like, hey, you get
some more money for me. I don't think I even
really do that. And our final fun fact for you, Heidihn,
the comic sans font came from an actual comic book,
so that's why they call it comic sands for comic book.
There you go, several fun facts. Now you know, thanks
for listening to the John and Heidi Show. Now some
weird news. A team of students at the University of
(18:48):
Prince Edward Island have developed a new type of soap
made from potatoes. Yeah, they're an actus club. I don't
know if I said that right. They conducted experiments on
five hundred pounds of unharvested potatoes finally came up with
what they now call spuds to SuDS. The idea came
after a visit to a local food bank, where they
discovered that some of the most needed items there are
(19:11):
hygiene products. The potato soap is made by transforming spuds
into liquid form, then adding ingredients like soap bases and
other oils, then solidifying it into a mold. So don't
we also need to eat potatoes?
Speaker 1 (19:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (19:25):
You would think that I wonderfulace like that they would
need potato. Maybe there's just a ton of potatoes that
go donated that that end up going bad, and so
they're finding another use for them.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
I thought it was kind of a weird thing. Spuds
to SuDS. I love that thing.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
I love potatoes. To turn potatoes into There's so many
things you can make.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
I turned them into something else, but I eat them
and the rest just happens. Weird news on the John

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Time out for the question of the day, and this
one is for Heidi. Twenty six percent of people do
this while cooking. What is it? I do this once
in a while. Sing, no, dance, dance, yeah, some stand
I'm so excited. I'm like, I'm gonna eat some eggs.
I'm gonna eat some breakfast. I'm so excited. No, I
don't do that. I do that once in a while.
(20:40):
Heidi would not know because she's sleeping up until the
smoke alarm goes up. That is your question of the
day on The John and Heidie Show.

Gotta love Derby Weekend and we were involved in creating a.

is our first year of having a Derby party.
Speaker 3 (21:20):
Yeah, and this is going to be a first annual,
because what an event.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
You're doing this every year.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
Oh, we're doing it every year. This is a thing.
Speaker 2 (21:27):

It was your costume, hilarious, hilarious, And we had I
got some stick horses and we had races. Oh my gosh,
it's just fantastic.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
Yeah, it is one for the ages.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
Yeah, and of course ment julips, which we mentioned earlier
in the show, and all sorts of fancy little you know,
finger sandwiches.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
All of the friends that we invited to join us
this weekend for the Derby party. Everybody said, so this
is basically Heidie's way of just saying, we need a
reason for a party, so let's just do it.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Any reason for a party is a good reason for
a party.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
We had a Marble party last year, which.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
Was and that's happening in September.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Oh we're doing another one. Okay, I'm very nice. That's
all you had for something specially.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Yeah, I just wanted to talk a little bit.

Time now for the list and I've got a couple
of things to get to. But first I got to

are in a private office. Oh, I'm sure you're a
quey cubicle and there's like somebody coughing. I know, Apparently
you gets common sense. So they found that people in
open offices take sixty two percent more sick days than
(23:10):
the average person. So, according to the study, the risks
are built into the design. Here's the thing. They say,
increased exposure to germs. That's one of somebody coughing on
you and everyone else more noise and interruptions, so it
reduces their focus, and then they get cognitive fatigue, lack
of privacy, so you feel like you're constantly on and
there's nowhere to decompress. I can't just relax, and elevated
(23:33):
stress linked to higher cortisol and emotional exhaustion and all
of that. So I know this is not a fun list,
but I thought it would be helpful to say. Study
authors say that in addition to higher rates of absenteeism,
the end result is having a team working in an
open office like that can lower productivity overall. And a
lot of the time people think by having this pod,
(23:54):
everybody's together, we're going to work together. It's kind of backfired.

We always like to wrap things up around here with
good news, and I think This is good news. It
comes from California, where a ten year old girl is
earning two college degrees and she is just getting started.
You heard me right when I said ten. She's ten.
Crafton Hills College is about to celebrate an extraordinary milestone,
welcoming their youngest ever graduate to the commencement stage. At ten,
(24:40):
Alisa Parrales from San Bernardino is set to receive two
associate degrees, making her the youngest graduate in the school's history.
Her impressive academic journey includes degrees in multiple sciences and
maths mathematics, I can't even say the words, all earned
with a near perfect GPA. According to the California Community,
(25:01):
what drives this young scholar quite simply, she loves to learn,
she said. It's fun to me. It's almost as fun
as playing outside or riding a bike or whatever. Her
dad explained that her educational journey began at a very
very early age, thanks to an inheritance that allowed him
to stay home. She began homeschooling when she was one.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
That's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
When she was five. You know, when other kids are
learning their ABC's, she was already driving I'm sorry, diving
into algebra and reading full book.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
That's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
I was going to say driving at five would have
been wild. We were working from eight am until four
in the afternoon. We did six days a week. According
to her father, it was a lot of work.
Speaker 3 (25:39):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Yeah. She enrolled in the college when she was eight.
She's graduating now, two degrees at ten. So despite social challenges,
she remained focused and determined. Now, with graduation in sight,
she's already planning her next step. She says, I'm going
to plan on transferring to hopefully Stanford. I've applied there
a couple of months ago and I'm awaiting a response.
I wonder if that it's the first time they've got
(26:00):
an applicant right from a.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
Ten year old.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
Yeah, I'm tens. I've got two degrees, but I'd like
to get more kudo as she does. Yeah, hopefully something amazing.
