Now surveys and studies and such. Despite long lasting advice
to avoid screen time at bedtime, new insight from sleep
experts suggests that watching TV before sleep might not be harmful,
might even be helpful for some. Doctor Emmelyn, a pulmonologist
and a sleep medicine specialist, notes that for certain individuals,
falling asleep to the television is just right. While blue
(02:43):
light from screens has long been blamed for poor sleep,
doctor Michael Gradzer says the real culprit is often simply
delaying bedtime. Experts now believe that when used as part
of a consistent wind down routine, TV can signal the
brain that it is time to reset the possible problem, though,
the brain can associate TV with falling asleep, So now

you're gonna fall asleep, you know. Yeah, every time you

is more closely resembling the comic book costume than his

(05:06):
A number of people have typically due to intense laughter,
causing a heart attack or suffocation. Comedy shows might want
to start a warning. So the good news is you
never have to worry about dying laughing at a John
Small comedy show. I mean funny, but I'm not that funny.
How horrible would that be? Would you finish the comedy show?
That would be?
Speaker 3 (05:27):
Well, oh, I thought you meant how horrible would it
be to die that way? I would think that would
be a great way to do.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
What I'm saying is as a comic. If I'm up
telling jokes and somebody dies, horrible. So I had somebody
have a heart attack at a wedding dance once, and
no it wasn't a wedding. It was a Christmas party.
And this guy brought his mother and then she fell
like face first into the plate of food, and there
was a guy speaking, and everybody's kid. There's this little
scuttle but going on, and then he's like, is everybody okay?
(05:51):
And they hold her away. She didn't die, she had
a heart attack, got the help, and then they did
an update to let people know, Okay, she's fine. But
it was such a weird thing. Do we finish the
commencement speeches or the what do we keynote? Speaker? Going
on or what do we do? I don't know, weird news.

Time out for the joke of the day with Heidi Small.
What do you have for me? Heidi?
Speaker 3 (06:28):
We've had a lot of work going on at our
house with different repairmen and electricians and plumbers, and.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Up to do with a joke.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, okay, I found this joke.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
One of them told you a joke.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
It just kind of made me.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Depending on which one, I was going to be very concerned.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Now, what's an electrician's favorite type of news?
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (06:47):
I have no idea.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Current events?
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Current events. See what just did there? That's very shocking, Heidie.
We'll be here all day. That is your joke of

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Time out for the scoop of the day and who
study claims that millennials are having significantly less nook than
previous generations. I wonder why that is. That seems like
an odd things. So I wonder if if there's something
in the food, or if there's just don't know, that
seems odd. I don't even want to know which generation
was the most busy in that department, because if it's
our generation, that's weird. If it's our parents' generation, it's
(07:55):
even weirder. Their grandparents. I don't want to think about that.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Well, look at how many kids our grandparents, I know.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
So let's just move on. Cosmetic dermatologists are reporting that
for about two years now, they've been noticing a new trend,
more and more patients coming in after using weight loss
medications complaining of ozempic face. Many people were thrilled to
lose weight, but they weren't quite as happy about the
changes to their face, which is a hollow, sagging appearance
(08:21):
for many. As these medications grow in popularity, more people
among the forty and over are demanding treatments for things
like fillers and facelifts. Fat transfers have jumped in recent years.
Many cases, though, doctors say patients now need to double
or triple the usual amount of filler to restore the
volume in their face to avoid that deflated bloom look.
(08:42):
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported that two in
five of their members say GLP patients were considering cosmic surgery.
It's like one in five already have so. But they
say this is a huge market for them.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Now, oh yeah, bet it is any hell thing there's
somewhere else, or they're making if we fix this, but
now you need this.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Yeah, well, we have a friend who lost a whole
bunch of weight and that was the thing. You're like
oh man, she looks and again I didn't think she
looked bad before, right, and then she lost a bunch
of weight and you're like, it's almost like skeletor so
I don't know you Again, at some point, enough is enough,
So just be careful out there. Your scoop of the
day on the John and Heidie Show.

Thank you for listening to The John and Heidie Show
on a Friday Excited a visit with Eves Burno. We're
going to talk about his new film that's out right now,
(09:43):
caroax Road, The Beat of a Nation, And we're talking
about Jack Carroak, who is the author of On the Road.
And this book has been a big inspiration to many
and I'm guessing it must have been an inspiration to you.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
Eves.
Speaker 5 (09:54):
Yes, that book means something very special to me. I
read it first when I was sixteen in school. It
had a real impact on me because I thought It
was incredibly brilliant and beautifully written, but I also at
the time didn't fully relate to it. And I was
a young black kid growing up in the American South
and young black gay kid growing up in the American South,
(10:17):
and I didn't always feel at the time like I
could go on the road the way Jack was going
on the road. And so all these years later, I
felt like it was really important to show all the
people who were also now on the road, who in
some ways couldn't have been on the road in nineteen
fifty seven when the book came out, So it was
(10:38):
really a spur for me to look at it from
a contemporary perspective.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
I had a chance to watch this, and it looked
like you guys had a lot of fun getting out
and seeing things you were on the road, and I
kind of probably had to feel a little bit like
following in Jack's footsteps.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
It was terrific filming, honestly, because being on the road
it's so freeing, and it's also most importantly, it was
a reminder about what brings us together as opposed to
what tears us apart. I was in New Mexico, Colorado, Texas.
I mean, we were all the New Louisiana. We were
all over the country, and one of the things that
(11:13):
was most important was that I really got to see,
you know, regardless of people's politics, to your point, regardless
of race or gender, you know, any of that stuff.
More than anything, people are in search of community. People
are in search of what brings us together as opposed
to what tears us apart. And what's so amazing about
(11:34):
the book and what was so amazing about being with
real people out on the road is you know, there's
nothing like being at an RV park where you're talking
to people who may disagree on politics, but you know
what they agree on is where to find the best
you know, chicken fried steak, or to tell you where
the best place to go see, you know, Cadillac ranch
(11:58):
down the road. Is it. It's an amazing sense of
community that the road and this country really provides us.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
In the film, you have many celebrities, but you also
have a lady who is driving around the country with
a camper and she said she thought it would be
fun to be like a truck driver. I have a
friend who is a truck driver, and he said, it's
amazing to get out and see how different everyone is.
But at the end of the day, we're all different,
but we're all kind of the same as well.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
Diana is here you're talking about, and she's extraordinary, you know,
she's almost seventy and it's out on the road with
her dog Tater and is such a force of nature.
But that's exactly right, you know, we are if someone
once said that there was a germ of every person
in the world in each of us. And I think
(12:42):
that's what this film, for me and the book are
really about. It's about the fact that we're each on
our own individual roads, our own paths, our own life paths,
but we bump into people, and gosh, when we have
that bump in, we create this awesome energy that Prepa
tells us back out into the world. And so the
more we can, you know, put down our phones and
(13:06):
not be siloed by our social media algorithms, and the
more we can actually, you know, look each other in
the eye and look out at this great country that
we live in and see the mountains and the hills
and the trees and the forests. It's such a better
way to live.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
You also had the chance to talk to some very
well known people I see, like Matt Dillon and Josh Brolin.
How in the world did you connect the dots to
find out that they were fans of Kak?
Speaker 5 (13:31):
You know some of these people, for example, Natalie Merchant,
who you know, I'm a huge fan of and she
when she was with ten thousand Maniac she wrote an
amazing song called Hey Jack Kerouac. So that was one
that was kind of like out there in the open.
I was like, we gotta we gotta reach out, reach
out to Natalie. Josh Brolin has been so honest, and
by the way, Michael Imperioli, who voices Karaak and the film,
(13:55):
has been so honest about the influence of both Karouak
and the on the Road. So it was a little
bit for some, it was a little bit of searching
and saying, you know, who's been influenced by this writing?
And then for some it's wonderful because when they're interviewed
or on their social media, they're so honest about the
impact that Caroac has had on their lives. So it
(14:19):
made it, you know. So it was easier than I
thought it was going to be.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
That's awesome, Eves, thank you so much. For your time.
Speaker 5 (14:25):
Thank you very much, thanks for having.
Speaker 2 (14:27):

Time down for some weird news. Have you ever heard
of a no bones day?
Speaker 3 (19:05):
No?
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Nor have I. It says if people sometimes enjoy a
no bones day, then logically they would define like this
as well. Boneless couches apparently to taking over TikTok and no,
we're not talking about furniture with missing cushions. Boneless couches
are missing frames.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
So it's bean bags basically.

Yeah, it's a soft, squishy sofa. It skips traditional structure altogether.
It's a cloudlike comfort with no sharp corners, no rigid bags.

Speaker 5 (21:12):

Speaker 3 (21:12):
Why?
Speaker 2 (21:13):

at least at least twelve times a day, especially if
you have our kids. Our kids made us laugh all

of humor. It's like they're half Heidi and half John. No,

from yesterday was like clip to attach something. You can
clip it on there or you can clip it to
cut something off. Same word, two completely different meanings. So
(23:19):
here's another one. Screen to display something or to hide something.
You're gonna screen that so people can't see it. You
put you know, screen it, or I'm gonna watch it.
I'm gonna screen a movie. So it's literally two different things.
How about off not functioning the lights are off or
the lights are activated. The alarm went off, so something
(23:40):
is either off or it's off. The alarm went off.
That means the alarm really went on. Apology an expression
of regret or a defense or justification. So I didn't
realize that that apology means both of those things. Did
you know that? No, I don't go to proceed or
to collec apps, So the engine just went like it.
(24:03):
I don't know Okay, that's what their explanation is behind
us here and go okay, like the engine, I don't know, okay,
went I just read it again. Strike to hit something
or to miss something in baseball if you miss it,
but if you hit something with the baseball bat, you
strike it with the mat. And sanction to permit something
(24:26):
or to penalize something. So I'm going to sanction this
or sanction this means again, there's several of these.
Speaker 3 (24:33):
Are I'm going to sanction this?
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Did that help? I raised my eyebrows up the second one? Huh?
That is the list. I have them all in the
show notes or today today was tough at John anddeidishow
dot com. Thank you for listening to The John and
Heidi Show. Brought to you went part by my pillow

like to wrap things up around here with good news,
and I think this is an amazing story. It comes
from Australia. Here's the headline. A couple turns an old
dorm into a safe home for older women facing homelessness.
How cool is that? Heartwarming act of generosity. A retired couple,
(25:22):
Richard and Jan Gould, they're transforming a former student boarding
house like a dormitory, into a low rent housing place
for older women who are facing homelessness.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
I love this.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
After relocating to Sydney from Hobart three years ago, the
Goulds began operating their short stay rental to women in crisis.
Many of their guests were older women who were struggling
to find and secure and get affordable housing. Some of
them were saying for a couple days, others several months,
but they all had stories that deeply impacted the couple.
They said it opened our eyes to how big the
(25:53):
housing crisis was, and it was really interesting to them
is how many of the older women were overlooked by
traditional housing services. So there's programs out there for other people,
but these guys are like, there's nothing for us, right.
So they've named their the Blue Skyhouse, a hopeful symbol
for what they envisioned to be the home of what
it'll represent a sky for these folks. They say it
(26:15):
will take them out of what is a very dark place.
And bring them into an area that we're calling Blue Sky,
he said. His wife said, we want people to be
glad to come home. They're aiming to welcome their first
residence by October. They started collecting secondhand furnishings and they're
in talks with local businesses for some sponsorships. Support is
poured in from local groups like the Good Karma Network,
(26:37):
where community members have volunteered their time and services to
help get this thing ready to go.
Speaker 5 (26:42):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
I love that they say it's all about using what
we have to make a difference. I love that. I've
got a link to that story in the show notes
for today at John anddeidishow dot com. Time say good bye, Heidi, Bye, Heidi, goodbye, everybody,
