It's it's Monday. My beautiful bride is at my side. Hello, Heidi?
What are you doing over there?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
I'm just storing something in my broth.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Later, I gave her a gift card. I saw her
tucking in there like you, what are you doing? That
doesn't make sense? Well, what a great way to start
the show. Well, it's a movie star Monday, and I've
got a guest joining me here in a bit. His
name is Henry Golding. You might know him from Crazy Rich. Agents,
might know him from a Simple Favor or another simple favor.
(00:49):
That's that Blake Lively movies, The two movies. He's the
husband in that. Okay, anyway, He's got a new film
out now called Daniella Forever follows a man who joins
a sleep trial. It allows him to rebuild his life
with his girlfriend, who died in an accident, and he's
now with her again in his dreams, which is just
an interesting idea for a movie, and I'm excited to
chat with him all about it coming up.

Today is play in the Sand day. Oh, and I
found a cocktail called toes in the Sand.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Oh is it a Jimmy Buffett thing?
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Isn't that crazy? It's rum, guava, nectar, pineapple juice, club soda,
coconut water, nutmeg, and pineapple garnish. And it does sound
like something that it is. Just basically everything in that
drink says summer. So yeah, yeah, yeah, I think that
sounds awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
I've got a link to the drink in the show

Now surveys and studies and such. For gen Z, travel
planning is not about beaches and bucket lists. It's about
how hot the locals are and if they'll be able
to take a cool selfie. New survey of one thousand
frequent travelers found that sixty percent of gen Z they
choose destinations based partly on how datable the locals and
fellow tourists look in photos they've seen. Yeah, attractiveness of
(02:55):
people and instagrammable backdrops are the things that shape their itiner.
The trend doesn't hold across generations, though seven percent of
baby boomers admitted to this kind of visual first approach. Yeah,
seven percent, sixty percent of gen Z. Though there's also
a gender gap. Thirty five percent of men said they
picked travel spots this way, compared to only twenty one
(03:16):
percent of women. So guys are like, where's the good one? Yeah,
and gen Z leads the pack when it comes to
travel based on aesthetic appeal. They're also most likely to
end up disappointed with their trip. Some said they even
have left a trip early when the photos didn't meet
their expectations.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Gosh.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Sixty percent of those surveyed agreed. They said they would
choose a more expensive location if it looked more impressive
in the photos. Here's the thing I would take, sad.
I don't even take selfies, but if I did, I
would look for like, hey, look a rubble pile. Let's
take a photo in front of that. I mean, just
to be different. Wouldn't that be funny? Here's our trip
to this exotic place, and they're like, why did you
(03:53):
get a pile in for a photo in front of

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Okay, this is the quote that I thought was humorous,
and it's from a representative out of Illinois. His name
was Everett Dirkson. He said, a billion here, a billion there,
sooner or later it adds up to real money.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Oh my goodness. Yeah, that's real money from the very beginning.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Any real money with the first billion.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, well we're I'm completely different.

Time now for the scoop of the day. I've got
three different quick things here. So first of all, forty
four years ago MTV was launched, So they just celebrated
their forty fourth birthday. Gosh, we're getting old, I know,
I remember that.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
I remember that day.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Here's the thing. I don't remember like the day that
it launched, but I remember that it was in the
news that it launched, and I was like, oh, we
don't even get that here. So it was like a
year later that we got it. I think. Then fifty
years ago Jimmy Hoffa went missing. He's been gone for
fifty years.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Yeah, And sixty years ago JK. Rowling was born, so
I thought that was kind of interesting. There was something
forty something, fifty something sixty and I guess the forty
was actually forty four, so I wasn't quite exact. And
lately gen Z cannot seem to get enough of what
was once thought of as their grandparents' food, cottage cheese.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
You love cottage cheese. That's not something I've ever enjoyed.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
It was one considered a kishy diet food, lumpy and bumpy,
but now it's trendy. Cottage cheese is seeing unprecedented demand
thanks to the health influencers on TikTok. CNN reports that young,
protein hungry consumers have whipped up a frenzy a lot
of new recipes, and they've posted them online, creating a
buzz that brands and manufacturers are struggling to keep up with.
(09:20):
Cottage cheese is high protein, low and sugar, and appropriate
for GLP one diet. It's led to a ton of
recipe videos that have gone viral, including a delicious looking
one for strawberry cheesecake ice cream made with cottage cheese. Yeah.
I have sent several of these to you. I'm like,
we should try this and then I'll ask her later.
(09:40):
I'm like, I said you a video. You're like, I
don't watch videos like, well, you missed a good one

(10:04):
you for listening to the John and Heidi Show on
This movie Star Monday, excited to visit right now with
Henry Golding. You might know him from Crazy Rich Asians
or a Simple Favor that was Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick.
And he was also in another Simple Favor that came
out more recently, and he's got a new film that's
out right now, Daniella Forever, and this looks absolutely fascinating. Henry,
tell me a little more about this film.
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Absolutely, John, It's a wonderful mashup genre of film. It's
kind of sci fi with kind of a strong romantic,
kind of comedy esque feel about it. Essentially, it follows
my character Nicholas, who's kind of in the depths of
depression after losing his girlfriend. Six months later, he comes
(10:46):
across this revolutionary but untried sort of trial treatment of
a drug that allows him to have access to full
sort of lucid dreaming. And essentially, what you're meant to
do is go through therapy within your dreams to get
to the root of the trauma. But he realizes that
he can actually conjure up a whole world and universe
(11:10):
in his head and bring back to life what he
feels is back to life his girlfriend or the memory
of his girlfriend. So he starts shifting towards more the
dream world rather than the reality that he actually lives in.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
And this movie is absolutely sci fi. But the world
we live in today, you know, sadly, it seems like
we could like blink our eyes and this could be
a reality. Hopefully not tomorrow, but it could certainly be
a reality soon.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Yeah, you know, it's happening right now. Like, could you
imagine if a company was able to take your online fingerprint,
your absolute DNA injected into an AI where it could
conjure up sort of a CGI imageview that you can
talk to. You could do that with anybody, So it's
(12:00):
possible in the real world.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
You know, Daniella, Forever is out right now. You've had
a chance to do a bunch of fun projects. We
know you from movies, but a lot of folks know
you from Crazy Rich Asians. Was that your first project
or am I missing something before that?
Speaker 4 (12:14):
Nope, that was the first one.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
I love that and people absolutely love that. And another
thing they loved is the movie A simple favor from
twenty eighteen. They loved it so much that they have
another that just came out. We've seen both. They were
really really fun and I enjoyed watching that. What was
it like working on that project? That had to be
a really fun thing to work on.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
Yeah, I mean working with Pul Siegig is such a joy.
We've become tremendous friends. We've done three movies together. We
did both of The Simple Favors and a little film
called Last Christmas, and we just have such a bawl.
He's such a who on set, and I think he's
(12:55):
going to be a long long life sort of collaborated
with me.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
Now, throughout your career, you've had a chance to work
in many different genres. We've seen you in some sci fi,
which is out right now. We've seen you in some
romantic comedies and some different fun movies. Is there something
specific that you would like to do that maybe you
haven't had a chance to do yet. Is there a
genre that you're looking forward to?
Speaker 4 (13:15):
Yeah, you know, I love sci fi. I'm a massive
sci fi mode. But also I'm really feeling my kind
of comedy at the moment. Like with Nine Perfect Strangers,
the character is a little very aloof and kind of
kooky and had some amazing fun moments. So I think
I've been drawn to that. Like I go into production
(13:36):
next month on an Amazon comedy with a very stacked cost,
so it should be that should be a really fun one.
But I get to sort of break out the comedy
trumps for that as well.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
And Daniella Forever, that's more of a sci fi film.
And is there a genre that you've not had a
chance to do or are you like a secret Western
fan or is there something out there that you'd really
like to try?
Speaker 4 (14:00):
And Western would be awesome, but I think sci fi
like a prop like Spaceship of the Planet kind of
sci fi. Well, builder that's always been sort of a
dream of mine.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Well, I hope you get the chance to do that.
And again there's a little bit of sci fi. And
the one that's out right now Daniella Forever, and you
can find that right now. And again our guest today,
Henry Golding. Henry, thank you for your time. We appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
Sir, Thank you so much. Thanks jump you take.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Care absolutely again Henry Golding, our movie star Monday guest today.
And the film is out right now. It is called
dan Yella Forever, and I've got a link to the trailer,
so if you're going I wonder what that would be like,

news to me as we head to the News to
Mean newsdesk with Heidi Small.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
So, I have lots of family members that are really
super into NASCAR. That's not something I've ever really watched.
But there are some superstitions within NASCAR that I didn't
know about. Okay, So one is don't ever drive a
dam a green car.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
Really.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Just a few months after winning the Indianapolis five hundred
and nineteen twenty Gaston Chevrolet died after crashing into the
car into a car that he didn't see. He had
just painted his car green.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
And then shortly after that, in nineteen fifty two, Larry
Mann crashed his green Hudson Hornet into a wall and died.
So both of them passed away, and so then since
then it's been kind of a don't drive the green car, huh.
Don't eat peanuts in the stands is another one, Okay.
In the early days of NASCAR, most races were held
(17:07):
at local fairgrounds and people would sit in the stands
above the pit crews and they would eat peanuts and
drop them, and the shells would drop into the pits,
and the cars rex at these races were almost always
had evidence of peanut shells. It just because of the
peanut shells. So they say you can't. That's another thing,
you know, you can't eat peanuts. And one more i'll
(17:29):
shape today share today is don't shave before a race. Really,
NASCAR driver Doc McKenzie shaved off a beard before his
wedding ceremony, and the first race afterwards was at the
Wisconsin State Fair. He crashed his car and died. Fellow
driver Ted Horn later quipped Doc shouldn't have shaved and
(17:49):
jinxed it, and so since then they say don't.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
Shave or just don't crash.
Speaker 3 (17:55):
Yeah, we're three more, but we'll share those tomorrow. There
you go, and that's news to me.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
All right. It's also news to me on the John

Fun fact for you, Heidie, Each of the main characters
in SpongeBob square Cants was inspired by one of the
seven Deadly sins. Really yeah, I never really thought about
that before, So we're gonna have to go through those sometimes.
But not seeing. Fun fact for you, Heidie. The Mona
Lisa was painted onto a plank of wood, not on canvas.
I never knew that. Okay, fun fact Frey, Heidies Roman
(18:58):
gladiators did not eat grains or meat. What the world
did they eat?
Speaker 3 (19:02):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Fun fact for you John, birds do not sweat. Didn't
we just do this? I could have swore it.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Yeah, we did, you did.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
So they still don't sweat. And our final fun fact
for you, John, the general rule of thumb is if
an actor appears in fewer than half of the episodes
of a tc TV season, they're a guest star. So
if they're not in, you know, at least half, then
they'd be a regular. But if not at least then
they're a guest star.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
So interesting.

a heidie thing. Is there a cure for migrain so
you can pick up from the Golden Arches drive through?
Speaker 3 (19:57):
There's a cure for a hangover?
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Yeah, TikTok seems to think so. The so called Mick
Migraine meal from McDonald's has gone viral, users sharing videos
claiming that you can cure migraine. Bye, are you ready
for this? Consuming one large Coca cola one large order
of fries. But experts are dubious of this supposed solution.
Doctor Amy Davis, r d N, registered dietitian and founder

Speaker 3 (21:36):
Oh yeah, can we talk about it on the radio.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Yes, we will lock yourself out of your car. We
did this at the dump rolls. We went to the

brought our dog with She locked us out of the

she stepped on the lock and locked it. And then
we spent a half hour trying to get her to

Speaker 3 (22:24):
So, I've been finding a lot of these like meal
challenges that were pretty much everywhere you go, somebody's got
a meal challenge. Yeah, but I found another one that
is in let's see Amarillo, Texas at a place called
Big Texan Steak Ranch. Okay, for fifty dollars, anyone can
try their hand at polishing off an entire seventy two
ounce steak dinner. If they're successful, the meal is free.
(22:45):
Nice contestants have just sixty minutes to eat the to
eat the steak, which is a whopping four and a
half pounds. Yeah, that's a lot of meat, along with
a shrimp, cocktail, salad, baked potato, and dinner rolls. You
have to eat all of it. There are a few
rules once you start. You may not leave the table
for any reason. You must cut your own meat. Nobody
(23:08):
else can assist you with the meal. If you upchuck,
the contest is over and you don't finish the meal.
If and you are not allowed to share it, which
is common sense. Of the more than twenty eight six
hundred people who have attempted this challenge each thousand, yes,
let's see, which started in nineteen sixty, more than four
(23:31):
seven hundred and eighty have succeeded.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
Holy cow, so let's see.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
But of the four or five women who try annually,
about half succeed So the success rate is a bit
higher if a lady is doing it than if a
man is doing it. So ladies have a fifty percent
chance of winning this thing. The oldest person to compete
and to finish it is a sixty nine year old
grandmother nice and the youngest is an eleven year old boy.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
Holy how much was it? Four and a half pounds stake?
Speaker 3 (24:03):
Four and a half pounds steak and all of the fixings.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Yeah, that is something special with Heidi Small.

Time now for the list. I have some odd headlines.
These are actual, real odd headlines, honest to goodness headlines
that were somewhere in a newspaper somewhere. A bear attacks
woman while walking dogs.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
The bear was bucking the dogs.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
I believe the woman was Quebec. Man mangled by boat
propeller pieces his life back together. What a horrible way
to say that sex education delayed, teachers request training. Close
look at dating finds men choose attractive women. How close
did you have to look? And I'll do one more
(25:18):
and then we'll share the rest of these tomorrow. Body
in duffel bag may be a homicide?
Speaker 3 (25:23):
No kidding himself there.
Speaker 2 (25:27):

around here with good news, and I think this is
just a really neat story. Minnesota pizza shop. There was
a dumpster discovery that inspired a wave of kindness. Started
as a troubling discovery behind a pizza shop in Minnesota,
turned into a beautiful example of compassion and humanity. July
twenty ninth, there's a place called Pizza Man in Columbia Heights,
just north of Minneapolis. They shared a heartfeld post on
(26:12):
Facebook after realizing people had been eating out of their dumpster.
They say, I don't even know how to start this post,
but here goes. The owner of the store said, please
do not eat out of our dumpster. Nobody deserves that.
Rather than responding with frustration, he extended an open hand.
He said, anyone in need of food, simply ask, no questions,
(26:32):
no judgment. For those two embarrassed, he offered an alternative,
leave a note, and we'll quietly set aside some extra
food or some small cheese pizzas near the back door,
away from you. I love that, yeah, says if you're
in desperate need for food, just ask. If you're too
embarrassed to ask, find a way to call us and
ask if there's a way to leave a small cheese
(26:52):
pizza out to the back door. You don't have to
even see us. If you're the ones doing this, please
leave me a note. We'll find a way to leave
some extras or some mistakes out back so you don't
have to dig through the trash to find food.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
I love that. That is so compassionate and beautiful.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Well, they had in twenty four hours after posting this
about a little over one thousand dollars donated to them,
saying we would like to contribute to this. Yeah, that's
plus if some groceries were donated to the local food
banks as well, and says we did not expect nearly
this kind of response that we've gotten from this. The
(27:27):
support over the last twenty four hours has been unreal
and it didn't stop. Their new customers have been flocking
to the restaurant because they go, I've never been here before,
but I like your kind of like your style. I
want to do business here so nice. I think that's
really coo. I love you.
Speaker 3 (27:40):
Yep, that's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
I've got a link to the story. It's in the
