Today's rum day.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Oh wow, what are you gonna have?

Speaker 4 (01:24):
Always makes me think of vacation. And another thing that
always makes me think of vacation as reggae. And I
found reggae rum punchs. Of course you did white rum, orange,
pineapple and lime juices, strawberry syrup and mint or pineapple slice.

Now surveys and studies and such, limiting yourself to just
one digital device at a time may do wonders for
your waistline. A two thousand and nine study found that
media multitasking, or flipping back and forth between a smartphone,
a smart watch, a laptop a tablet, it can contribute
to obesity. Imagine if I did that, how much bigger
it would have been. Research determine people who mindlessly switch

(02:48):
between digital gadgets and gizmos are more likely to struggle
with an increased lack of self control, particularly when it
comes to things like eating. So, yeah, that's pretty one.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
It's so easy to overeat when you're mindlessly doing something.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Here's something that I will say. There are times that
we'll be watching a TV show, and I'll be watching
the TV show and I'll be scrolling I wonder if
that would count the same as this. Yeah, it was,
so you think that's the same kind of Yeah, well
it doesn't say TV's on here.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, it means more than one device.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Yes, count Fine? Could you quit pointing at it? Surveys

if you've heard of her, but she heard of her.
Been on the news a little bit following the heat
of debates sparked by American Eagle American Eagle. Now there's
a whole lot of people talking about things like she
could land a Blockbuster endorsement deal worth ten million.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah, and this would be her helping bud Light recover
from their blunder. So if she does this and decides
to do this, I don't know if she's going to
or if they're going to or whatever. But anyway, it
sounds like they're talking to her about a ten million
dollar deal too, you know. Help. Bud Light and Universal

did you know that a horse normally has more than
one horse power? Yeah? A study in nineteen ninety three
showed that the maximum power a horse could produce is
eighteen thousand W whatever that is around twenty four horse power. Yournat. Well, oh,

(05:43):
this is a whole different thing. I'm gonna give you
a second thing. Height. As you know, your signature could
reveal personality traits. A study in twenty sixteen purports that
among men, a larger signature correlates with a higher social bravado,
and among women, a bigger signature correlates with narcissistic traits.
So I'm not sure why I had both of those
jin together in one thing. So apparently I didn't edit

(06:06):
very well, so I know you're shocked. We don't know everything,
but now we know both of those things.

Time now for the joke of the day. What do
you got for me? Heidi Small, You're gonna groan? Can't wait?

Speaker 3 (06:33):
Yeah? Why did the zombies get divorced? Wasn't their marriage
was dead? I love that reaction.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Did you think I was gonna laugh at that one
or no?

Speaker 5 (06:48):
No?

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Okay, no I didn't because sometimes I laugh at.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
The fact that it's not funny. That's kind of funny too.
Johnny Carson was good at that. When when I used
to watch The Tonight Show and Johnny Carson did it,
he would take a joke that didn't work, and then
he would still find a way to make the audience laugh.
He was the king at that joke of the day
on The John and Heidi Show.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Time now for the scoop of the day. Scientists in
China unveiled the world's first robot with emotions, and it
is now on sale to consumers. Do you need a
robot with emotions?

Speaker 3 (07:46):
Heidi, not even a little No.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
I don't even know that we need a robot. But
if we have a robot, I don't think I wanted
to have emotions.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
It's a horrible idea.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
If you have a robot that like vacuums your floor
and you say, hey, rumba vacuum the floor and room
was like, I'm not in the mood.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Yeah, No, horrible, horrible idea.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Well that's what you're here for, MBA. Yeah, I'm sulking
in the corner. I don't know why.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Why would do they get angry?

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (08:09):
I mean if they have emotions, this is a bat.
We're going way overboard.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Yeah. Well, speaking of scientists going overboard, they're working on
developing an ice cream that will not melt. Inspired by
Japan's viral Kawanza ice which survives heat without turning into puddles,
researchers looked at polyphenols, anti accident compounds found in fruit.
These seem to stabilize ice cream by interacting with proteins,

(08:34):
creating a network that holds fat globules in place, and
by using high doses of polyphenol. The result was ice
cream that can withstand a blast from hair dryers. Do
you think that's necessary?

Speaker 3 (08:49):
And that's just a giant chemical bomb?

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Then you don't want to be eating the problem with this,
By the way, when ice cream does eventually get warm,
it turns into a rubbery solid, not a drippy disaster.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
Gosh, and what is it doing in your body? Do
you think?

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Will these desserts design be designed to hold their shape
for hours? Yes? Will they ever make their way to
an ice cream stand near you? Who knows? They don't
know yet, So that's one that they're like, we don't
know if we need to reinvent ice cream yet, But
it didn't stop us from just stock ye scoop of
the Day on The John and Heidi Show, The Heidie Show.

Thank you for listening to The John and Heidi Show
this weekend. Excited to visit with Joe and Ashley Gaddis
and they are the co owners of Apocalypse Manufacturing in

(09:42):
Florida that deliver jaw dropping custom builds and outrageous family
fund annics in a new reality series, Truck Dynasty. It's
on Discovery Channel and there's a bunch of really fun
stuff that happens and we're going to find out about it. Ashley.
For people who don't know anything about Truck Dynasty, let's
talk a little bit about this and tell them what
it's all about.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
I mean, you know, you.

Speaker 5 (10:01):
Have me, my wild family and us marrying ourselves and
my husband's amazing truck building business. You kind of just
follow us along the ride. He does some pretty cool bills.
We have some celebrities that show up, got PIEDI shocked,
and you kind of just get to see what we
do in our day to day, the drama, the fun,
the crazy.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
So that sounds like a fun show to watch. But
before there was a TV show, there was a business. Joe,
tell me a little bit about how you got started
in this field.

Speaker 6 (10:28):
It started out as as a hobby side gig. You know,
it was my distraction from what I should be doing
for work. And you know, don't build one custom truck
for for myself. And you know it wasn't for sale,
and tell until it was for sale somebody, you know,
I'm interested in it, built another one to replace it,
and another one another one till the point you know,
I'm building a couple of custom trucks a week. And
then I met Ashley and her and her family been

(10:49):
in the car business their whole lives. You know, they
brought a lot of like the car dealership side of
it on more of the shop and custom build side
of it. And it just grew and it grew and
it grew people come up, and you know, customer gets
to be the creative on these things. Some people call
it a work art when we're done, but it sort
of the customer's vision. They'd say, this is how I
wanted to look, and me and my team's shout out

(11:09):
to make it look that way, and here we are
and here we are. You know, anybody who's met her
and her brother's has always said, you know, all you
guys should be on TV because they're hilarious, they're wild.
I'm not going to take that away at all. And
so when Jerry comes up to me and says, hey,
the Property Brothers want to do a TV show, I said, yeah,
that sounds right, so yeah, let's do it.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
I love that.

Speaker 5 (11:32):
Joe.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
What was the very first truck, the one that you
did that somebody else wanted from you?

Speaker 6 (11:36):
Yeah, because a wrangle I built for I built it
for me for a while, and my brother drove it
for a while and we just kept adding stuff at
his coming and somebody came one and said yeah, I
love that. And then you know, somebody else came along
taking you build me one like that. I was like, wow,
I've never even asked to build a custom truck for
somebody that was just doing it for myself, and we
did it, and then another one and another one all
of a sudden, you know, like my car washed guy,

(11:57):
he becomes a mechanic with me. My sales guy, he's
a mechanic with me. And all we did is, you know,
anybody would hired We hired you as a mechanic person.
But if you spoke, well good, you're a sales guy too,
but primarily help me put bumpers on. You know.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
I love that. So, Ashley, what do you think of this?
All of this fun stuff that you guys do. Now
people can watch it on a TV show. That's gotta
be fun.

Speaker 5 (12:16):
Yeah, it's definitely been fun. I mean we're you know,
we're just going with the flow. We're just following the journey.
It's all so new to us. It is what we
do on a daily basis. And the fact that everyone
gets to experience it, you know, it's exciting. It's we're
nervous because we've never done it before. I mean, I
don't you know, can I watch myself on TV every week?
I'm not sure, but I'll try it.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
So, Joe, you built a truck for Shaquille O'Neill and
for a bunch of other celebrities. These are people that
are known all around the world. What is it like
knowing that you built their truck. That's got to be
a lot of pressure.

Speaker 6 (12:44):
Oh, it is amazing. As a matter of fact, those guys,
Guy Piedro was one of the most amazing people want
to work with. He's a real car guy. He knows
what he wanted. You know, we right into the nitty
gritty and the details and shack even more so, you know,
he's this is not is not his first truck, and
these guys no cars, and they're really passionate about it.

(13:06):
And these guys are larger than life. It was very exciting.
He's very very humbling meeting these guys. And I consider
myself to be a normal size human And when I
shook Shaquille O'Neil's hand, I realized I am like toddler
sized to thread of those kinds and these they call
him Superman. He's massive.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
And what you're saying, they're larger than life, Shaquille O'Neil
is larger than life. What kind of truck did you
build for him? Did it have to be like specially
designed for his stature.

Speaker 6 (13:28):
Oh absolutely. I mean the name, it's called the super
Truck and it's, you know, seven hundred and fifty horse
hour monstrosity that was custom fitted to fit him and
he wears it like a jacket if that tells you anything.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Actually, the show just started this last week. If people
want to tune in and watch the next episode, when
can they watch it? Where can they watch it? And
how do we watch it?

Speaker 5 (13:49):
Sure, it's going to be every Tuesday night on Discovery
Channel at nine pm across the board. And I mean
it's exciting. I love what we do. I love my family,
I love my husband. Been the fact that we're doing
such exciting things that a TV show came and said, hey,
we want to put you guys out there. I think
the world will love it. I hope.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
So.

Speaker 5 (14:08):
I hope, you know, we get a few more bills
out of it and we can keep going on at life.

Speaker 6 (14:14):
Yeah, if you're in the Trusty in the custom builds,
it'll be fun to watch.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
I'm excited to see the show. Joe Ashley, thank you
so much for your time today. We appreciate it. Guys Again.

Speaker 3 (16:04):
So apparently Andrew Jackson's critics thought he was a jack.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
Okay, we can't say all of that on the radio.

Speaker 4 (16:09):
But slave owning, Indian displacing democrat embraced that image. Out
of spite, Jackson added a donkey to us campaign posters.
Oh so, the donkey symbol would have most likely died
out completely had it not been resurrected thirty years later
by Thomas Nast, an influential political cartoonist.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
Yeah it was.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
It was on all of his posters and all of
his stuff, and they just kind of died out after that.

Speaker 4 (16:36):
But then this political cartoonist resurrected it, and the party
would eventually adopt it as their mascot, even though it
was originally meant as an insult.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
Well there you go. How funny is this?

Speaker 3 (16:48):
Isn't that interesting? Yeah, that's news to me.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
That's also news to me.

Fun fact for you, Heidi, what's that?

Speaker 3 (17:26):
John?

Speaker 2 (17:26):
Women are attracted to the combined set of good and
plenty liquorice, candy and cucumbers.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
I love the smell of both of those.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
Well, there it is.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
And I love dark licorice. Love it? Oh my gosh,
so black.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
Even sound good to me? Ye all right. Fun fact
for a Heidi to the most used substance on Earth,
following water and air is sand. Okay, It's used more
than anything else, water, than air, than thing.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
We have so much of it.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Fun fact for a Heidi. In the eighteen seventies, a
city in Belgium tried to employ thirty seven cats as
mail carriers.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
Imagine that.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
Where's my mail meal? Fun fact for a Heidi. It
is impossible to imagine a new color, but if anybody
in the world could do it, Hei, it would be
the one she made up. One called great.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
Should not make it up. I keep telling you I
did not make that up.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
I'm pretty sure you.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
All over HGTV No, I did not make.

weird news. McDonald's is going full nostalgia mode this summer
with a new Ronald McDonald meal and what is it called?
No the new McDonald Land Meal. For the first time
in over twenty years, the full casts hamburglarru back in
the form of figurines. The meal comes with your pick
of a quarter pounder with cheese or ten piece McNuggets, fries,
and collectible tin packed with postcard stickers and character goodies.

(19:15):
Oh I love that. But the real star is a
limited edition Mount McDonald land shake inspired by the fictitious
volcano with blue lava and pink clouds. McDonald's kept the
flavor secret, but it's been confirmed that it is berry,
not cotton candy as rumored. One reviewer called it a
fruity and called it fruity and bright without being cloyingly sweet.

(19:38):
I don't know what that means, making it surprisingly drinkable
for a dessert shake. According to them. Former nineties kids
will also love the new exclusive collab meals available at
the Golden Arches starting this week, which This might have
been from.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
Last were super excited about that.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
They also have teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hello Kitty

So most of us know Johnny apple Seed.

Speaker 4 (21:35):
He was like he was known as kind of this
cartoon like figure wearing his little upturned pot for a hat,
and he loveably swung sewing apple orchards from Pennsylvania to
Illinois during the early nineteenth century. So he was out
there planting seeds all over the place. Well, Johnny's apples
weren't like sweet edible varieties that are around today that

(21:57):
we enjoy eating. The bitter fruit on his trees was
used for primarily one thing.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
Alcohol. Oh really, hard apple cider.

Speaker 4 (22:07):
Was a staple beverage around the American frontier, with the
average settler drinking more than ten ounces each day. This
was partly because water could harbor dangerous bacteria, so it
wasn't always safe to drink, so you couldn't necessarily.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
Trust the water. So they're like, let's get some applesiter instead.

Speaker 4 (22:26):
So what was it that transformed the boozy fruit to
an everyday snack fruit?

Speaker 3 (22:33):
Prohibition?

Speaker 1 (22:34):
Real?

Speaker 4 (22:35):
Oh yeah, so before prohibition they were only used.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
For and you're like, we got to sweeten these things
up a bit, yeah, and find a way to make
this taste good.

Speaker 3 (22:44):
Yeah. I think that's fascinating.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Well, that is something special with Heidi Small.

Speaker 1 (22:49):

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Time now for the list, and this is kind of interesting.
Things you should never put in your dishwasher acrylic dishware
or accessories, so it says.

Speaker 3 (23:31):
That makes sense.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
Small cracks, yeah happen. Brass, bronze, copper, and pewter items
says high temperature, water and detergent can cause discoloration, So
do not do that. Cast iron cookwar.

Speaker 3 (23:44):
I know, yeah, you shouldn't. Ever.

Speaker 2 (23:45):
My my bride over here was like washing my cast iron.
I'm like, what are you doing. That's not that's not
how you do it. She's like, oh, I'm trying to
clean it up. I'm like, yeah, it's it's easy. Leave
it alone. And if you could leave my frying pan
that I use now alone as well, I take care
of that. I saw you put it in the dishwasher.
I took it back out. So insulated mugs, unless they're

(24:05):
labeled dishwasher safe, just assume they're not nonstick pans. If
it doesn't say dishwasher safe, it's probably not. Sharp knives,
even if they are labeled dishwasher safe, it's not safe
for you because it can cut you. It can also
like cause damage in the dishwasher. Ten items ten will
rust in the dishwasher and would so if you have

(24:28):
like a wooden spoon or like cutting salad bowl or
whatever you like, No, don't do that, wash that separately.
So I have that list in the show notes for
today at John anddeidishow dot com.

Speaker 1 (24:38):

to wrap things up around here with good news, and
I think this is good news. What an amazing story

(25:00):
A highway crash, a life threatening injury, and a hero
who ran towards danger. Yeah, a stranger. A stranger ran
towards danger. That's a better way to say it. That
rhymes I love these motor psyc A crash left a
woman with a traumatic leg amputation on a busy San
Diego Freeway. Navy Hospital Corman second Class Samuel Gooden didn't hesitate,

(25:23):
He grabbed his medical bag, He sprinted across four lanes
of moving traffic, and he used his training to save
her life before emergency crews could arrive.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
Oh my gosh, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (25:33):
It happened on July twelfth, and it says where it happened,
but you're not going to know all that stuff anyway.
And the good news is he acted quickly, and if
he hadn't been there, he saw the accident happen. If
he hadn't been there, she might not make it, might
not have made it right now because she was losing
a lot of blood. But he got there, got some tourniquets,

(25:53):
got his medical kit. Ran one hundred and fifty yards,
So if you think about yardist three feet, so one
hundred and fifty, it's four hundred fifty feet. If my
quick radio, that's a god thing.

Speaker 4 (26:03):
He was definitely watching out for that lady by putting
that man in in that air.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
He got there. It took them about twenty minutes for
the other people to get there, the EMTs to get there,
and in that twenty minutes she might not have made it.
So gosh, he said, by God's grace, I was there
with my gear on time, and I didn't get killed
in the process. You had to run. Very very cool story.
I've got a link to that in the show notes
for today at John anddtheidishow dot com. Hero Heidi Hero time.
