were going to make it in here. She was candy crushing.
I was crushing us today, candy like I know.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
And I had to leave a winning streak to come
in here, did you.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Oh, I'm sorry, that's okay. You don't have it on
your phone anymore.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
I do not because I can't handle that.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
She would be sitting here on her phone right now. Yeah.
Well you do have a laptop. You can bring that
laptop cash. Okay. Well, I'm gonna be speaking today with
Dreama Denver. That is Bob Denver's wife, the late Bob Denver.
He was Gilligan from me. I loved Oh again, such

This weekend we were celebrating the great state of Maryland.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
I love you Maryland, and.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Several states have had this same drink actually, which is interesting.
It's the Orange Crush. Oh, you talked about it before
I did. It's vodka, orange liqueur, orange juice and an
orange garnish. Which is bizarre that there's more than one
state that says, yeah, that's that's our drink.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Maybe one person likes it and they just keep moving
around like kind of like Johnny Appleseed, but it's like
orange crush Ali or something.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
So anyway, I sent you the drink again.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
All right, I've got a link to that drink in
the show notes for today at John dheidishow dot com.

Now surveys and studies and such, is simple living really
the key to a happier life? While a study out
of New Zealand says maybe sixteen hundred New Zealanders found
that actually the biggest happiness boost was from voluntary simplicity.
It comes from not owning less necessarily, but from beneficience.
I don't know if I'm saying that right. Beneficience anyway,
(02:49):
whatever it is, it's called sharing time, skills and resources
with others and building community.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
I agree with that.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
I like that, even if I can't say the word decluttering,
conserving resources and buy local all contribute to a simpler lifestyle,
but they had a weaker direct effect on well being
than all of that other stuff.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
I'm a huge fan of decluttering.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, I know you are. She's been getting rid of
all my stuff. Research suggests both consumer culture and minimalism
often overlook the key role of social connection. Activities like
joining community gardens, skill sharing, collaborative consumptions all linked to
most strong mental health benefits that you can possibly get
and really high life satisfaction scores. In short, living simply
(03:30):
works best when it's paired with meaningful community ties. So
not just a tidy home, but you do a tidy home,
and then you also show other people how to have
a better life too. So I think that's cool. I'm
in let's do this Surveys and studies and such on

Charlie Sheen's infamous twenty eleven drug fueled meltdown that led
to his firing from Two and a half Men is
the stuff of Hollywood legend, and now you can watch
it on Netflix. Yeah. The first trailer for the tell
(04:16):
all documentary is out. The two part mini series Charlie
Sheen premieres on September the tenth.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
I still really like Charlie and I don't care what
anybody says.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Netflix has rounded out the cast of Emmy winner Dan
Levy's upcoming eight part family crime comedy series Big Mistakes
as production gets underway in New Jersey. Like Dan Levy too,
Zeth Rogen recently appeared on a program and they talked
about maybe a sequel to Pineapple Express. Back in two
thousand and eight. He did that, and he did that
with James Franco and it made one hundred million dollars.
(04:47):
Not a huge fan of his though, and he's like, uh, yeah,
I'd kind of like to do that. But here's the problem.
He and Franco are no longer friends, so they're like,
I don't know if that's going to happen. And a brain,
a jock, a basket Case and a Princess and a
Criminal will return to theaters. John Hughes classic The Breakfast
Club is forty years old.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
So cool, they're remaking it.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
No, the nineteen eighty five blockbuster is back in theater
September seventh.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
We go to that.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
All five castmates reunited for the first time, and I
think you're going to see some of that maybe before
after the movie. So that's really cool. Forty and it is.
It's called The Breakfast Club. And if you've not seen it,
what are you waiting for?
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Exactly?
Speaker 1 (05:23):

in space? Yeah? In twenty twelve, NASA astronaut Don Pettitt
(06:04):
took a yoyo on board the International Space Station to
demonstrate some tricks. It worked because a yo yo mainly
relies on the laws of conservation of angular momentum to
perform the tricks, so it's not so much gravity. Provided
that you keep the string taught and apply micro gravity,
it's gonna be just fine. So ready, glad we know that.
(06:25):
How much did that cost us?

Time now for the joke of the day with my
beautiful bride, Heidi. What you got, Heidi?
Speaker 3 (06:50):
My favorite Disney movie is The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I love a hero with a twisted backstory.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
I see what you did there? Ha ha. I don't
think I've ever seen that movie. I haven't either, haven't
that's not your favorite?
Speaker 3 (07:08):
I saw I've seen parts of it, and I was.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Like, Eh, really, all right, well now now I gotta
watch it.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Now, I gotta watch it.
Speaker 1 (07:15):

Time not for the scoop of the day. A girl
was arrested after she punched a police horse while deputies
were trying to break up fight. What in the world
was going on there?
Speaker 4 (08:01):
Good?
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Is there any reason in the world that you could say, Okay,
that horse deserved it. No, no, I can't think of
a single reason. So thank goodness, she was a rest.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
And technically she was punging an office.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
I bet she Yeah, I bet that probably is even worse.
So either way, don't punch horses. You wouldn't think we'd
need to say that. A brave dog who battled a
bull and lost a tooth after being kicked as the
twenty twenty five Hambone winner. The insurance company Nationwide hands
out an award to celebrate the most unusual pet insurance
claim of the year. Hambone Award is named in honor
(08:34):
of a dog who ate an entire holiday ham while
he was stuck in a refrigerator. This year's winner, Zia,
is a Belgian Manoli I don't know if I'm saying
that right from the Northern California area, found himself in
the middle of a real life bull fight minus the
red cape. During a routine stroll with his pet parents,
they encountered a loose, angry bull. Without hesitation, the dog
(08:55):
leapt into action, placing himself between the bull and his
owner's awesome dog escaped to safety. The bowl kicked Xenia
in the in the jaw, dislodging a tooth and sending
him to the emergency event. Xenia made a full recovery,
by the way, So you want to know some runners up. Duke,
a lab mixed from Ohio, swallowed an entire spatuel ahead
after licking up some peanut butter whow staying at his
(09:17):
dog sitter's house. So it's a good thing that that
that ended nicely. And Foxtrot a great day in Texas,
stole a full turkey leg right out of the tongs
of the owner. It was on the day after Thanksgiving
and Foxtrot swallowed the turkey leg hole. Ye, So anyway,
congrats to the hambone a warders. How is that a
(09:39):
thing scoop of the day? Right here on the John

Thank you for listening to the John and Heidi Show
ex I to visit right now with Dreama Denver. She's
the author of a brand new book about her husband,
(10:04):
and the book is called Bob Denver of Gilligan's Island
fame that the book is called Island to icon the
many lives of Bob Denver and Dreama. First of all,
thank you for writing this book and letting more people
know about your late husband. He was a neat dude,
wasn't he.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
He was a really neat dude, you know. And I
wrote the book in order to celebrate sixty years, six
sho years of Billigan's Island. All the castaways at Separatinas
they're all gone, and I didn't know whether anybody would
recognize that it had been sixty years, so I decided
to do this bookcase. The book is so special because
(10:41):
it's more like a scrap for any classic TV fan.
It's more like a scrapbook photo album of Bob's careers,
starting back with Energy Krebs on the many Lives of
Wie Gillis, the many Loves of Rebbie Gillis, sorry all
the way through the last thing he ever did on TV.
And there's so many things in this book, there's special.
(11:06):
I spent a year going through every nook and cranny
at my house to find all kinds of special things.
I'll tell you about one thing I found that I
had it for thirty five years, and I didn't remember
or knows that I have it. I went through a
little stack of cards and I ran across a holiday
card Merry Christmas postcards to Bob from Elvis and the Colonel. Oh,
(11:28):
now I've had that forever. I had no idea that
I had it. So that's to the book. I've tried
to find things like that that would be you know,
interesting to people, things that they would pictures of Bob's career,
telegrams that you received from studio heads when it got
the part of Maynard, just all kinds of really fun things,
(11:48):
and it makes it a very special book, different than
other things that are out there.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
One of the things that I think is fascinating, and
again this is because I'm a radio guy. There are
many people who maybe don't realize this, but addition to
all of the other things we know him for, he
was also the owner of a radio station, which is
kind of neat.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
Yes, I still have the radio station. Actually twenty one years.
I've had it the New York Press of this Little
Buddy Radio, and we called it that because that's that
call letters and all that. But Little Buddy Radio is
so much fun to say, and it kind of gives
you the visual of what the radio station is about.
(12:26):
But it's an off profit radio station owns and operates
the Denver Foundation and the Denver Foundation we set up
in honor of our autistic son, and so it's yeah,
he loved doing that. He didn't live we started the
radio station, and he lived probably for a year, maybe
(12:47):
a year and a half after we started it, so
he didn't get to do everything with it. He would
have wanted to do things he mentioned wanting to do,
but he sure did love it when we had it
while he was with us.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Well, And I love that you kept that of his alive,
and I think that's really really neat. And again I
love the fact that you've got this book. There are
so many people who know when I was watching Gilligan's Island,
it was in reruns, but there are so many people
who not only watched it when it was on, but
also watch that in reruns, and not just that, many
of the programs that he has. They're just iconic, and
(13:19):
I love the fact that you're kind of shining a
light on some of these neat things that maybe we
didn't know well.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
You know, it really is such an honor for me.
I love to be able to tell people this Bob
left me such a legacy of love from the people
who loved him, who love the show. That people are
willing to open their arms to me because they loved him,
And that has been such a gift to me all
these years. Because what I really have wanted to do,
(13:44):
and what I hope I have done well in a
way that would make him proud, is I have wanted
to keep his memory alive. I didn't want him to
just go up just to go away because he's not
visibly around anymore. He did so much amazing work in
his career and he is iconic. He wouldn't like that.
(14:06):
I mean, he would be okay with the fact that
I called the book Island to icon but he never
thought of himself that way. He was very down to
earth about those things. But you know, to be able
to represent him and to keep his memory alive has
really helped me heal from losing him. And twenty years later,
I still miss him so much every day, and so
(14:26):
it's really a lovely thing to be able to talk
about him.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
I love it. I love that. Thank you so much
for taking the time to visit with us. We appreciate
it a bunch.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
Oh, thank you for having me. I appreciate it a
bunch new Thank you again.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Dream of Denver and she is the widow of the
late Bob Denver from Gilligan's Island and the Many Loves
of Dobie Gillis. And now there's a new book out.
It's called Island to Icon the Many Lives of Bob Denver.

she didn't accompany her husband to his inauguration in eighteen
forty one because she was ill. President Harrison died a
month later, and his wife never had set foot in
the White House.
Speaker 1 (17:15):

(20:03):
weird news. If tomatoes are a fruit, is ketchup a smoothie? Well,
Hines and Smoothie King teamed up to answer that age
old joke with a real product, The Hindes Tomato Ketchup Smoothie.
Yeah you heard that right, nast Hinds Tomato Ketchup Smoothie.
It is in select cities. The limited edition Smoothie Blends
(20:24):
Heinz Ketchup Heindes simply ketchup with sorbet, apple juice, strawberries
and raspberries, promising a sweet, fruity bass with a tangy
tomato finished. Despite initial skepticism, one reviewer said the surprising
result was refreshingly balanced and it tasted more like berries
with the hint of tomato rather than straight up ketchup.
(20:44):
In short, a weird idea unexpectedly tasty execution. They say, So,
I don't think I would rush right out and try that,
but yeah, I don't know. What do you think, Heidie, No,
not for you. It sounds a little too weird for me.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
Smoking?
Speaker 1 (21:47):
No caffeine. So if you're trying to quit that would
probably be tougher than quitting smoking because smoking is just
one thing. But caffeine isn't it everything? Yeah, that's all.
It's in coffee, it's in It's in a lot of things.

So the options were Katie the Kangaroo.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
Elmo the Elephant, and Tony the Tiger, and he won. Yep,
Katie and Tony initially tied, but the Tiger's winning personality
soon edged out the competition. And I'm gonna let you
talk about the rest because i know you know so
much about Tony.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
Do you know who you voiced him? This handler? It
does thorough good Ravenscroft, Yes, you did?
Speaker 3 (23:06):
And where was he from?
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Norfolk, Nebraska?
Speaker 3 (23:08):
And what else did he voice?
Speaker 1 (23:09):
He also voiced euromine one?
Speaker 3 (23:13):
Yeah, he did see. I knew you'd want to shore.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (23:16):
We used to live in Norfolk, Nebraska, and I was like,
he's from here. I don't know, I don't know why
that was so exciting to me. I was not twelve,
by the way. I was like thirty something, grown man.
I was still excited. That is something special with Heidi Small.

to wrap things up around here with good news, and
I think this is good news. A lightning strike took everything,
(25:25):
but a stranger gave it back. This happened in Savannah
in July. A fire that followed nearly twenty I'm sorry,
A fire that left nearly twenty residents homeless. One of
them was a young lady that was a student Bella Rosales.
She lost everything, no renter's insurance, no family nearby, a
(25:45):
modest college budget from her internship. She was left like
with nothing and she had to start over. Well that's
when a man stepped up and decided how But it's
the guy that she had never even met. He learned
about her situation from coverage on the television there. Story
resonated with him because he had also been there once.
Mike Horn once lost everything himself. That was during Hurricane Helene.
(26:08):
The community rallied to help him rebuild. Not long after,
he endured another devastating loss when his wife passed away
from cancer. So when you know, he had kind of
this one two punch. Not only did he lose everything,
then he lost his wife. When everything came back, so
the thing that's really cool, he decided, you know what,
I am going to step up and help. He and
his late wife owned a furniture store, and many of
(26:30):
the things that she needed would actually be in this store.
So he reached out and said, hey, come on in,
let's find some stuff for you. How amazing, And he said,
this is not just a one time thing. I encourage
people to step out, step up and help out when
they see a story like this. So he's saying that
he's done this before and he encourages other people to
do it as well. I think that is absolutely.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
Amazing, absolutely help.
Speaker 1 (26:54):
And there are so many times where you know, the
answer to somebody else's problem is you. You are the answer.
You just need to take one moment to go, hey,
I could help with this. And you know, if that
means giving everything you have, that's probably not the answer.
But in this guy's situation, he's going, hey, I lost everything.
Now I get a furniture store full of furniture. I
can give you some stuff, you know. So again, what
(27:16):
a cool story. I've got a link to it in
